US warns against Iran retaliation as Trump raises 'regime change'

00:00Donald Trump has raised the idea of regime change in the Islamic Republic as well.

00:04Let's analyse that for you. A little earlier on, we spoke to our correspondent, Fraser Jackson, in Washington.

00:12Donald Trump has basically undercut the message that the rest of the principles from the U.S.

00:17have been given over the course of the last 24 or so hours.

00:20Earlier on Sunday, during those Sunday morning shows, Marco Rubio, the Vice President, J.D. Vance,

00:26and Pete Hegseth all said that this war was not with the Iranian people and with Iran,

00:31but with Iran's nuclear programme. Well, just eight hours later, the boss undercut them,

00:36taking to his social media platform, True Social, to say it's not politically correct to use the term regime change,

00:44but if the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn't there be a regime change?

00:51Meagre, i.e. make Iran great again. That is completely flying in the face of what the U.S.

00:58has been saying so far, and even flying in the face of what the U.S. communicated to Iran through back channels,

01:05that this was going to be a small operation with limited scope, that there was nothing else planned.

01:10And it instead sounds much more like the playbook of some of Israel's government's top brass.

01:16So now there is concern as to whether this line from the White House signals a shift in the American position

01:25and as to whether they will go further into this conflict.

01:29Now, of course, Donald Trump so far has said that he thinks there's still a diplomatic path forward

01:36to get Iran to the negotiating table, and the Iranians and the Americans have been trying to establish

01:41more direct connections over the course of the last few days.

01:45But now it seems that the bombing that we saw over the weekend, then coupled with this message from Donald Trump,

01:52is going to really hamper and hamstring those efforts.

01:56Because, like I said, this could signal a significant shift in stance from the Americans towards the Iranian government.
