00:00:57Oh, my God.
00:01:27Oh, my God.
00:01:57You men are under arrest. Offer the least resistance and you die.
00:02:12Huh? That voice.
00:02:15Come with me or I attack.
00:02:17Oh, my God.
00:02:39Your calmness is extremely suspicious.
00:02:44You're under arrest.
00:02:45Follow my instructions.
00:02:47You are armed.
00:02:48Throw down your weapon immediately.
00:03:07Hit the turret.
00:03:09Aim for the turret.
00:03:12That's the nerve center.
00:03:34Well done.
00:03:36Hey.
00:03:38You can talk?
00:03:39How come you can speak?
00:03:42That was brave.
00:03:44To fight a robot.
00:03:45Armed only with a magnum.
00:03:47What was it?
00:03:48A guardian.
00:03:49A decade ago, violent riots became increasingly frequent here in San Francisco, and the authorities
00:03:56developed these machines to maintain law and order.
00:03:58This particular guardian must have been on patrol when the wind struck.
00:04:02The pilot will have forgotten how to open his cockpit or operate his ejector.
00:04:07But even after he died slowly, horribly of starvation or lack of oxygen, the computer which controlled
00:04:13his machine, and which had been programmed to detain or destroy, continued doing just that.
00:04:19The guardian of an authority that had long ceased to exist.
00:04:22The guardian of an authority that had long ceased to exist.
00:04:24Let's go.
00:04:25Okay.
00:04:25Who are you? What's your name?
00:04:36You know a lot. Things, words that I don't know.
00:04:40You haven't forgotten. Why?
00:04:43Well, to start with, I'm called Sophia.
00:04:45But I don't want to say any more about myself.
00:04:48Tell me your story. What's your name?
00:04:51Of course, I didn't know what my name was.
00:04:53So Johnny called me Wateroo.
00:04:56He taught me all the words I know.
00:05:00And everything else come to that.
00:05:03Johnny.
00:05:09Johnny was 13. Three years younger than me.
00:05:14But Johnny knew all kinds of things that I didn't know.
00:05:19And when you learned them, you dumped him, huh?
00:05:23Not quite.
00:05:25He died.
00:05:33I buried him.
00:05:35Then I hit the road.
00:05:36I'm from a little town in the foothills of the Rockies called...
00:05:45I don't remember.
00:05:47It was an ordinary sort of place.
00:05:50If anything exciting ever happened, I've forgotten it.
00:05:53I think everybody knew everybody else.
00:06:00It must have been a friendly sort of place.
00:06:02Platoon, quick march!
00:06:09Platoon, quick march!
00:06:09But then, out of a clear sky, the wind blew through our town.
00:06:25And suddenly, when it had passed, everyone, not only in our town, but everyone, maybe in the whole world, had forgotten everything.
00:06:36How to fly planes.
00:06:38How to drive.
00:06:50How to drive.
00:06:51Everything had been forgotten.
00:07:04It was as if we were all babies again, but babies with the strength of grown men and women.
00:07:11Amnesia.
00:07:13It's called amnesia.
00:07:16It's called amnesia.
00:07:18No one was spared.
00:07:22The wind blew into every corner of the world, and where it blew it wiped the slate of memory clean.
00:07:28Only instinct remained.
00:07:30I don't remember the following days and weeks too clearly.
00:07:48I just wandered around town, unknowing, helpless.
00:07:53And soon, people started to feel hunger.
00:07:55Food became the only necessity, and people fought for it like savages.
00:08:00In my town, at least, there was still plenty for all, but that had been forgotten.
00:08:04The old and the weak were swept aside without mercy.
00:08:07Parents abandoned their children, not even knowing they were theirs.
00:08:11And I, I was no better, no different than all the rest.
00:08:32I was hungry.
00:08:39That's all I knew.
00:08:41Oh, no.
00:08:45Oh, no.
00:08:47Oh, no.
00:08:49Oh, no.
00:08:50Oh, no.
00:08:52Oh, no.
00:09:21Oh, no.
00:09:40Oh, no.
00:09:49It wasn't an enemy, but my own reflection.
00:10:03I didn't understand, and I didn't understand the awful noise the children were making.
00:10:08I couldn't stand that noise.
00:10:13I didn't understand.
00:10:16I had to destroy that face staring at me.
00:10:19And then I ran out of the house.
00:10:24I was screaming.
00:10:27I didn't know where I was going.
00:10:29I just kept running till the town was behind me.
00:10:33I didn't know where I was.
00:10:37Maybe I'd been here before, but I couldn't remember.
00:10:42There was a large white building.
00:10:46Bodies everywhere.
00:10:47I'd grown used to the sight of death and destruction.
00:10:51But here, in the bright sunshine of this silent place, I felt something darker, more terrible
00:10:59than anything I had yet come across.
00:11:01I felt something watching me.
00:11:07And then, then I saw it.
00:11:10A huge man, with wires attached to his head, his body, his arms and legs, threatening a boy who sat calm and still in an invalid chair.
00:11:31They hadn't seen me.
00:11:35I wasn't in danger.
00:11:37But for some reason, which I couldn't have explained if I'd wanted to, I knew I had to do something to help that boy.
00:11:44What's the plot?
00:11:45What about me?
00:11:46Oh, boy.
00:11:47All right.
00:11:48All right.
00:11:48Let's go.
00:11:48Let's go.
00:11:50No, no, no, no.
00:12:02Go ahead.
00:12:02Me and Owen.
00:12:08Let's go.
00:12:38Let's go.
00:13:08The boy was holding something in his hand, pointing it to where the man had fallen.
00:13:21There was smoke coming out of the front.
00:13:23Later, I learned what it was.
00:13:25Thanks.
00:13:32Don't be afraid.
00:13:34Hey, you're from town.
00:13:36Tell me.
00:13:37He was talking to me, using words.
00:13:39What's your name?
00:13:40But I'd forgotten what they meant, or even how to make them.
00:13:45I couldn't speak, and I couldn't even begin to understand what he was saying.
00:13:50He took my hand, and that felt good.
00:13:54He smiled, and I felt less afraid.
00:13:56And that, that was how I met Johnny.
00:14:01I was in what Johnny called a military research base.
00:14:28They weren't just building new machines.
00:14:32They were turning people into human weapons.
00:14:34That's what Johnny was.
00:14:36And the man with the wires had been taught to move and destroy objects with his mind alone.
00:14:42But the program was only partly completed when the wind came.
00:14:47The doctors, the scientists, lost their memories at once.
00:14:50But for some of the more advanced patients who'd been abandoned, the process took a little longer.
00:14:57Johnny told me they could have destroyed New York in an afternoon if the right code had been activated.
00:15:02A few of the experiments were not directly aimed at destruction, and Johnny's was one.
00:15:08He was the subject of the most advanced memory experiment of all.
00:15:12There's a limit to what human minds can retain.
00:15:15But data entered into a computer will remain there forever.
00:15:18Its memory keeps everything, useful or not.
00:15:22Johnny had a computer put into his head to take excess information directly from his brain.
00:15:27The wind that destroyed human memory couldn't affect the store in Johnny's computer memory.
00:15:44Johnny took me to the center's laboratory, which was still working, controlled by its computers.
00:15:50He put a machine over my head.
00:15:54I was scared.
00:15:55But by that time, I trusted him completely.
00:15:58Thirty minutes later, I had the knowledge of a five-year-old.
00:16:21Where have I put my hand?
00:16:29On the desk.
00:16:31Where's my hand now?
00:16:33On the chair.
00:16:34And what's this white flower?
00:16:36It's called a rose. I tried to eat one.
00:16:40What was its taste?
00:16:41Uh, I can't explain what it was.
00:16:45But it made me throw up.
00:16:47I see.
00:16:51What am I holding?
00:16:56A pistol.
00:16:58Hmm, what am I called?
00:16:59Ah, wait a minute.
00:17:01I must have told you ten times already. My name's Johnny.
00:17:03Johnny!
00:17:04I won't forget again.
00:17:06So much to remember.
00:17:08Oh, it's hard.
00:17:10You don't remember your name, do you?
00:17:12No, I don't.
00:17:13Let's think of what to call you.
00:17:15I suppose a name that describes the role you'll play in the world which the winds left us.
00:17:20A name like Wateroo.
00:17:21Sounds pretty odd.
00:17:22It's a Japanese word that means traveler, which is what you'll be.
00:17:25Because your role will be to travel all over the world, helping men to relearn what they've forgotten.
00:17:31Whatever my name had been before, from that day I became Wateroo.
00:17:34I had one more session on Johnny's machine.
00:17:48After that, for some reason, it didn't work anymore.
00:17:51But thanks to the machine, I had learned a great deal.
00:17:55I understood that I was part of the human race.
00:17:57I learned that the land I saw about me was called Montana.
00:18:02That this was part of a country called America, which in turn was a part of a planet Earth.
00:18:09And that this planet spinning around the sun was a tiny speck in the infinite universe.
00:18:14Most important of all, I was able to ask questions.
00:18:20And the most puzzling question was, what had happened to the world?
00:18:26You know what happened when the wind blew over the Earth?
00:18:29Everything that had been learned, everything men had achieved in the time since progressing from the apes, was forgotten.
00:18:35Their memories were wiped clean.
00:18:37They forgot everything they'd created, the music, the painting, the science, even their families, their names.
00:18:44They forgot how to use their machines and what they were for.
00:18:47All these things were blown away.
00:18:49We know that.
00:18:50The question is not what happened, but what made it happen.
00:18:53For instance, a military experiment which misfired?
00:18:56A military experiment?
00:18:58You mean the forces destroyed the people they were really supposed to have been protecting?
00:19:02It's possible.
00:19:04I don't know.
00:19:07Perhaps we'll never know.
00:19:11But whoever was behind it, it's without doubt the biggest catastrophe that's ever been seen in the world.
00:19:17It could have been unleashed by men who had become so convinced of their great wisdom, it never occurred to them their inventions were out of control.
00:19:25Or perhaps beings from another world looked down on man and saw he was becoming so dangerous to the universe that they were compelled to stop him.
00:19:37I hope to have been asking.
00:19:39Amen.
00:19:41Okay.
00:19:44
00:20:07Every day, Johnny taught me something new,
00:20:13building on the basic knowledge his machine had given me.
00:20:17He taught me things I would need to know simply to survive.
00:20:26I'd practice until he was satisfied.
00:20:32He taught me how to drive.
00:20:34That the stars could be used to find out where I was.
00:20:45That some plants can be eaten, but some are poisonous.
00:21:04He also taught me how to have fun.
00:21:09But as summer ended, Johnny began to grow weaker.
00:21:13Sometimes he would sleep the whole day.
00:21:17Or just lie quietly in his bed too exhausted to move.
00:21:21How do you feel?
00:21:40Some days I feel more full of life than ever.
00:21:44Look, Wateroo.
00:21:45A pair of mountain bluebirds.
00:21:47Winter's almost here.
00:21:49They'll fly south to the warmth of Colorado or California.
00:21:52And we won't see them again till next spring.
00:21:55They have no memories, we understand it.
00:21:57Only instincts.
00:21:57So they have lost nothing.
00:21:59I envy them.
00:22:01The rules they live by are so simple.
00:22:04Going into town for food and gas was getting dangerous.
00:22:07I'd see gangs of men fighting with rocks and clubs.
00:22:10And now disused buildings were starting to crumble and collapse.
00:22:13Johnny, the road into town's nearly been cut by...
00:22:17Johnny was dead.
00:22:27I stood by his bed and remembered the last words he'd spoken to me.
00:22:33Wateroo, you will soon have to leave here.
00:22:36I've tried to prepare you for a task which no one else can complete.
00:22:44You must travel to the four corners of this land, perhaps right around the world,
00:22:48and see what is left of the things that man has built and done.
00:22:53Those you meet will have no memory of how their father has slowly, slowly built up a way of living
00:22:58which finally, perhaps not quite, destroyed itself.
00:23:01Man has returned to a primitive basic state.
00:23:05You alone can understand that.
00:23:08You alone can look back on history and show man where their empty ambitions led.
00:23:13You must teach them new aims, new desires, to take them in a new direction,
00:23:19where they will achieve what they are capable of.
00:23:22Oh.
00:23:22Oh.
00:23:22Oh.
00:23:52And so I started my journey.
00:23:53I didn't know where I was going.
00:23:55It didn't matter.
00:23:59I still don't understand.
00:24:01What?
00:24:02Suppose that Johnny was right
00:24:03and the wind was caused by beings from a different world.
00:24:06Assuming it wasn't a mistake,
00:24:08they must have had a definite plan.
00:24:10I can't answer you.
00:24:11Perhaps they didn't want to destroy a man,
00:24:13but simply point him along a different way.
00:24:15Try to make him act in ways which aren't so destructive.
00:24:18What do you mean?
00:24:19Rescue him by disabling him?
00:24:22That makes no sense.
00:24:24Yes, it is puzzling.
00:24:26You can't assume that beings more powerful than man
00:24:29are necessarily wiser.
00:24:36We can't stay here any longer, Wataru.
00:24:39The Guardian you confronted
00:24:41has a computerized self-repair program.
00:24:43It won't be long before it resumes
00:24:46its search and destroy mission against you.
00:24:48Hey, I never got around to asking where you're heading.
00:25:03New York.
00:25:05Quite a way.
00:25:07Think you'll make it in one piece?
00:25:08Yes, but I know I'd have a better chance with you along.
00:25:11I told Johnny I'd go to all the big cities in America
00:25:14to see what I could do there.
00:25:15I'm not going to go back on my word.
00:25:18So, if you don't mind some detours...
00:25:20No, I don't mind at all.
00:25:22Okay, then.
00:25:23Let's do it.
00:25:25Okay, let's.
00:25:26It's eerie being in this huge city
00:25:44that doesn't seem to have any people in it.
00:25:46Things may have gotten so tough
00:25:48that everybody ran away.
00:25:49Huh?
00:25:50Wait.
00:26:04But the girl!
00:26:05Be careful.
00:26:06You may not realize what's going on with these people
00:26:09or exactly why they're after her.
00:26:11They've had to make up new rules
00:26:12because they found the old ones
00:26:14are no use to them any longer.
00:26:15Let me go!
00:26:16Ah!
00:26:17Ah!
00:26:19Ah!
00:26:20Ah!
00:26:20Ah!
00:26:50Don't be scared.
00:27:10You're okay now.
00:27:11Uh, um, see?
00:27:17Um, calm down.
00:27:19I don't think I can reach him.
00:27:20Let me talk to him.
00:27:21Huh?
00:27:34It's all right now.
00:27:36It's all right.
00:27:46I've been able to communicate with them to some extent.
00:27:50Her name is Sue.
00:27:51He's called Little John.
00:27:53Their people had chosen her to be the bride of their god.
00:27:57Tomorrow was to have been the day of her marriage.
00:27:59Well, so what?
00:28:00Was that bad?
00:28:01It would not have been happy.
00:28:03She was about to be sacrificed.
00:28:05To a god?
00:28:06Human sacrifice?
00:28:07Yes.
00:28:08The god that they believe in demands a succession of brides.
00:28:11In return, he spares the rest of the people.
00:28:14Oh, my God.
00:28:15Oh, my God.
00:28:16Oh, my God.
00:28:16Oh, my God.
00:28:17Oh, my God.
00:28:18Oh, my God.
00:28:19Oh, my God.
00:28:20Oh, my God.
00:28:20Oh, my God.
00:28:21Oh, my God.
00:28:21Oh, my God.
00:28:22Oh, my God.
00:28:23Oh, my God.
00:28:24Oh, my God.
00:28:25Oh, my God.
00:28:26Oh, my God.
00:28:27Oh, my God.
00:28:28Oh, my God.
00:28:29Oh, my God.
00:28:30Oh, my God.
00:28:31Oh, my God.
00:28:32Oh, my God.
00:28:33Oh, my God.
00:28:34Oh, my God.
00:28:35Oh, my God.
00:28:36Oh, my God.
00:28:37Oh, my God.
00:28:38Oh, my God.
00:28:39Oh, my God.
00:28:40Oh, my God.
00:28:41Oh, my God.
00:28:41Oh, my God.
00:28:44Poor kid. No wonder she's got nightmares.
00:28:56But does their god really exist?
00:28:59Perhaps.
00:29:00What's important for you to remember is that the men who were chasing her believe it does.
00:29:04So to those men sacrificing her to appease him is natural.
00:29:07It's disgusting.
00:29:09Sacrifices were offered to the gods for thousands of years
00:29:12after man first looked up and recognized unknowable forces ruling him.
00:29:16In terms of his history on earth, the custom was stopped only the blink of an eye ago.
00:29:20And now that the wind has blown away the old restraints, the old certainties,
00:29:24it's not surprising he's returned to it.
00:29:26And you, are you so certain of your own values
00:29:29that you're prepared to impose them unthinkingly on others?
00:29:32To choose their way of life for them?
00:29:35To tell them what is good and what is bad?
00:29:37Demanding obedience by force if necessary?
00:29:40You don't understand yet.
00:29:42Anyway, the sacrificial ceremony, or marriage, if they'd rather call it that,
00:29:45is scheduled to take place in front of their altar tomorrow night
00:29:48if they recapture her by then.
00:29:52I feel for her.
00:29:54A marriage even to a god, which she didn't want,
00:29:56would have been enough to make her run away.
00:29:58But if her life's threatened as well,
00:30:00she has the right to live her own life.
00:30:02Mm-hmm.
00:30:04What?
00:30:05Uh, have I said something funny?
00:30:09No.
00:30:10No.
00:30:11On the contrary, what you just said made perfect sense.
00:30:14It's dangerous for Sue to be outside in daylight.
00:30:26I don't think so.
00:30:28According to her, there are hardly any people left in the city.
00:30:32They've all gone into the countryside,
00:30:34where it's easier for them to find food.
00:30:36And so the chances of her meeting anyone
00:30:39who'll try to force her to return to face her sacrifice
00:30:42in a city as big as this are pretty small,
00:30:44especially as she's found herself such a faithful bodyguard.
00:30:47Sounds reasonable.
00:30:48Listen.
00:30:50Suppose we were to drive them both down to the beach for the afternoon.
00:30:54It wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't been there since the wind.
00:30:57I understand about Sue now,
00:31:13but what do you make of little John?
00:31:15I haven't found out much about him,
00:31:17but I like the way he's so gentle with her.
00:31:21Do you care about her?
00:31:23I've made up my mind we'll be taking them,
00:31:26so she won't be sacrificed,
00:31:27and maybe I can teach them a bit.
00:31:29Hey.
00:31:30Hey.
00:31:54Hey.
00:31:58Hey.
00:31:59Hey.
00:31:59Hey.
00:32:00Hey.
00:32:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:32:30Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:30Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:32Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:34Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:36Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:38Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:40Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:33:44You look great!
00:34:11No offense, understand me?
00:34:13No, of course you don't.
00:34:15Well, I'm gonna find us something to eat, then hit the sack.
00:34:18We got an early start tomorrow.
00:34:20Geez, what a dope I am.
00:34:26Sophia!
00:34:30Here, see, I found some stuff for a party.
00:34:33Hey, where have Sue and little John got to?
00:34:36Have they gone inside?
00:34:37No, Wataru, they've just gone.
00:34:39Eh?
00:34:40Wasn't it obvious from the way Sue behaved today what she felt?
00:34:44You must have noticed.
00:34:45Everything she did was as if she'd never have the opportunity to repeat it.
00:34:49Everything was as if today was the last day she'd spend on Earth.
00:34:52She knew that if she didn't go back, then some other girl would be sacrificed to the God in her place.
00:34:58So she returned.
00:35:00Shit!
00:35:04Where do you think you're going?
00:35:06I won't let them sacrifice Sue!
00:35:08I won't let them kill her because of some superstition!
00:35:11I'll rescue her!
00:35:12Her and the other girls who are in danger!
00:35:15Get in!
00:35:16Little John dropped this when he ran after Sue.
00:35:23He doesn't know what it means, but he understands that there are rules different to those he lives by now.
00:35:29You'll know what he gets in danger as well!
00:35:48No one.
00:35:49では very well...
00:35:53It's a computerized urban construction robot.
00:36:18As its chief function is to destroy buildings on sites that are to be redeveloped,
00:36:22it's equipped with powerful destructive devices, added robot arms and laser cannon.
00:36:27Its caterpillar traction allows it to move at great speed over any terrain.
00:36:31It could flatten a small city in a day.
00:36:34And it's this machine they worship as a god.
00:36:52Look, Waterloo. Somehow he must have learned how it works, which has given him power over the rest.
00:37:08Sue!
00:37:18Whoa!
00:37:23Whoa!
00:37:25Whoa!
00:37:27Whoa.
00:37:28Whaa!
00:37:45Watch out.
00:37:50Whoa!
00:37:56Oh, my God.
00:38:26Let's go!
00:38:56Come on, Sue!
00:39:12Run!
00:39:18No!
00:39:26Sue!
00:39:33Sue!
00:39:35Help!
00:39:39Oh!
00:39:46Oh!
00:39:48Oh!
00:39:52Oh!
00:39:56Oh!
00:39:58Oh!
00:40:01Oh!
00:40:07Oh!
00:40:11Oh!
00:40:12Oh!
00:40:17You've destroyed him, Wataru.
00:40:26It's the end of their all-powerful god.
00:40:47Wataru, I'll make a bet with you.
00:41:15A bet?
00:41:17You said Sue and little John should come with us on our journey,
00:41:20and you might teach them what you'd learn from Johnny on the way.
00:41:24They didn't come, and I'll bet that no one will join us on our journey.
00:41:27What do you want to bet?
00:41:28Somebody will want to learn.
00:41:34Okay, I'll take the bet.
00:41:36What's the stake?
00:41:37The future of this planet.
00:41:39Whether man will survive on it.
00:41:41Huh?
00:41:42What do you want to bet?
00:41:50Who wants to bet?
00:41:53Yeah, and this is your badge of leadership.
00:42:20Sue's gone, Little John.
00:42:23You won't know anyone like her again, but maybe you can care for other people the way
00:42:28you cared for her.
00:42:29You won't know anyone like her.
00:42:49I wish that I wasn't so sure I'll win our bet.
00:43:04We'll see.
00:43:19Wateroo, as a result of people that you've met, have you learned yet what being a human
00:43:40being means?
00:43:41They're a complex breed.
00:43:43It's not always easy to see what drives them on.
00:43:47What's driving you on, Wateroo?
00:43:50What do you want?
00:43:52Tell me.
00:43:53It's hard to say.
00:43:54I'm not sure myself, but look up there.
00:43:58See those clouds in the sky?
00:44:00Maybe they're above a town, and in that town I'll meet somebody who can teach me all the
00:44:04things Johnny never had time to.
00:44:07Before the wind, men must have been curious about all kinds of things they've got no time
00:44:12for now, but I'm curious and I want to learn.
00:44:14Yes, it's because they were curious that people progressed.
00:44:17All progress couldn't have been bad.
00:44:18Quiet.
00:44:19What?
00:44:20What's the matter?
00:44:21We're being followed.
00:44:22What?
00:44:40It's hooked onto the back!
00:44:44Tell me.
00:44:45What?
00:44:49Tell me.
00:44:50Don't you stop!
00:44:51You're fast.
00:44:52You're fast.
00:44:53You're fast.
00:44:54You're fast.
00:44:55You're fast.
00:44:57You're fast.
00:44:58So when eventually you go back, you go back and get the end of your own stuff.
00:44:59Let's try to play a little bit.
00:45:00Let's try to play a little bit.
00:45:01Get away.
00:45:02The end of your journey, and then you have to run away.
00:45:04You're fast.
00:45:05Get away.
00:45:06It's too late.
00:45:07Don't die, Sophia.
00:45:32You're a very lucky young man.
00:45:34No bones broken and not even serious cuts.
00:45:36Just one or two scratches and bruises.
00:45:42Where am I? Is Sophia all right? Is she here?
00:45:46Now, now, don't get excited. Just lie back and take it easy.
00:45:50I heard this terrible noise on the edge of town, so I drove out to find what had caused it.
00:45:56And there was your jeep lying on its side next to a big crater with burnt grass all around it.
00:46:01You were unconscious, but otherwise there was absolutely nothing wrong with you.
00:46:06I wish I had half your strength.
00:46:13Oh, there you are.
00:46:14I was amazed to discover that she got away without a scratch. Incredible.
00:46:21Sophia.
00:46:22I'll look in later.
00:46:23Sophia.
00:46:24Sophia.
00:46:24Listen, how come he treated me? And how come he can talk?
00:46:30Haven't people in this part of the country lost their memories?
00:46:37Wow!
00:46:37The U.S. government designed and built this eternal city at the beginning of the 21st century.
00:46:47The beauty of it is that it's completely self-contained with its own hospital, university, park, suburbs, and services.
00:46:54The farms in the city limits are big enough to supply all the food that's required.
00:47:00The whole system's controlled by supercomputer.
00:47:03The guardians are programmed so they cannot enter.
00:47:06That's all fair enough, but why didn't people lose their memories here as well?
00:47:11We'll answer that later.
00:47:13For now, you must sleep and get your strength back so we can travel on.
00:47:16Yeah.
00:47:19You're right.
00:47:19Oh, Miss, um, excuse me.
00:47:35I don't answer to Miss.
00:47:37Call me Charge Nurse, which is who I am.
00:47:41And that's what I'd like to be called.
00:47:43I hope that's clear.
00:47:44Yes.
00:47:45Sorry, but you're so young.
00:47:46You just relax.
00:47:48I'll take care of everything.
00:47:49Pull up your sleeve.
00:47:55Oh, uh, there.
00:47:59I've been trying to find you, nurse.
00:48:02Back to bed at once!
00:48:05Really, Mr. Simpson, you know you're not allowed up, even if you're feeling better.
00:48:09I know, but I felt so lonely without anyone else to talk to.
00:48:13All right, I'll be there in a minute.
00:48:15You're really a terrible handful.
00:48:16What the hell's going on here?
00:48:21What the hell's going on here?
00:48:21What the hell's going on here?
00:50:42I've caught up with you at last, thank God.
00:50:46The mayor would be delighted if you two could join her for a little supper this evening.
00:50:54Isn't that kind of her, if you'd like to take us?
00:50:57With pleasure. This way...
00:50:59This is weird.
00:51:10If you'd be seated, the mayor won't be long.
00:51:13Hey! This spread's amazing!
00:51:19I wonder who made it?
00:51:20Everything's run automatically by the computer.
00:51:30Those two have everything they want here.
00:51:32I can't imagine a reason why the pair of them should ever exchange this place for the outside.
00:51:36Welcome to the Eternal City.
00:51:42I'm so pleased you're feeling well enough to have joined me.
00:51:45I wish I was as young and strong as you.
00:51:47Now please, do begin.
00:51:49If you want something different, do please say.
00:51:51Come on, start.
00:51:55You've forgotten how lovely meals can look.
00:51:58Mmm.
00:52:00Mmm.
00:52:00Mmm.
00:52:09Mmm.
00:52:10May I ask a question that's bothering me?
00:52:15Yes, do.
00:52:17Do you know what happened to the rest of the world two years ago?
00:52:20Oh, yes.
00:52:22Well, then, why do you and Mr. Simpson still have memories?
00:52:26Not only your own, but those of other people as well.
00:52:32Huh?
00:52:36The answer isn't entirely clear even to me.
00:52:38But the wind affected us as well as you outside.
00:52:42It affected not only the people living here in the Eternal City,
00:52:47but also the supercomputer which manages our affairs.
00:52:50It didn't forget, but it became very confused.
00:52:53Before it managed to repair itself, many lives were lost.
00:52:56The computer had been programmed to put the protection of the city above all else.
00:53:00In its damaged state, it mistook the unfamiliar violence of the people as that of enemies
00:53:05and killed many of them.
00:53:06The rest ran away.
00:53:08I asked you here because I have a request to make,
00:53:12on behalf of the many Mr. Simpsons and Leases who remain.
00:53:16Stay here with us.
00:53:18You can see how well the computer cares for us.
00:53:21The average lifespan here is no less than 104 years.
00:53:24If you live beyond that, we can still promise you a comfortable life.
00:53:29We can also guarantee you protection from the many dangers in the outside world.
00:53:34All your worries will be solved for you by the computer.
00:53:37What do you say?
00:53:38You mean that you're inviting us both to become members of the cast of this charade which you play eternally?
00:53:44It's not a charade, it's our reality.
00:53:48And don't forget that this is now the only place in the world where a human being, thanks to the computer, can live with human dignity.
00:53:54Outside there is only ruin.
00:53:56Humans are reduced to the level of beasts, the strong devour the weak.
00:54:02I can't believe you would willingly go back to such a situation.
00:54:06Think logically about it and you'll realize I'm right.
00:54:09Which do you find more desirable, the idyllic life in our city which I describe?
00:54:14Or the fear and violence which have become the main, virtually the only characteristics of life out there?
00:54:22So I'll ask you again.
00:54:24Will you accept my invitation to stay with us?
00:54:26No, I won't.
00:54:27You aren't right.
00:54:28I'm not sure how to say it, but something is missing from your description of life here and on the outside.
00:54:33You're prisoners here, prisoners of thousands of memories.
00:54:36At least on the outside.
00:54:37You're feeling, I'd hoped you would cooperate freely.
00:54:40Huh?
00:54:45I see now that you've been too brutalized by your experiences to appreciate my offer.
00:54:50But at least I gave you the chance.
00:54:53And you, young lady, would you consider remaining?
00:54:58Behind your reasonable exterior, you too resort to force in the end.
00:55:07But your city will one day turn to dust and your supercomputer is powerless to avert its fate.
00:55:18We'll see.
00:55:19You talk as though you were God.
00:55:21I have certain knowledge, but that does not make me God.
00:55:26Nor believe me does it make me your enemy.
00:55:29But I shan't submit to the will of your supercomputer, not even in exchange for peace.
00:55:33That would deny the being I am.
00:55:36Wateroo, you know what I mean?
00:55:39Yes.
00:55:39And I agree.
00:55:41Dare you allow me to talk with the real Lisa as well as the real Mr. Simpson?
00:55:45Yes, we'll see them and hear what they say.
00:55:51We aren't afraid.
00:55:52We aren't afraid.
00:56:15Listen to me, Lisa.
00:56:23What I say to you isn't dictated by your computer.
00:56:27Look there.
00:56:28Thousands of people lived in this city when the wind blew across it.
00:56:32When they lost their memories and no longer behaved rationally,
00:56:35the computer feared they would destroy the city and killed them.
00:56:39Those who weren't killed fled or died anyway.
00:56:42Your computer had had the ability to repair itself built into it.
00:56:46When it started operating properly again,
00:56:49it found that instead of the city full of people it had been programmed to care for,
00:56:53there were only Mr. Simpson and you.
00:56:55It needed those other people to satisfy its program.
00:56:58So it reawakened their memories in you.
00:57:02I remember now.
00:57:04My God.
00:57:06The terrible weight.
00:57:07All those memories.
00:57:08You can put all that behind you.
00:57:10Come with us.
00:57:11With Sophia and me,
00:57:13you'll be free to go on with a life of your own
00:57:16instead of being a puppet of the computer.
00:57:18You can speak with your own voice,
00:57:20see with your own eyes.
00:57:27You have to find words,
00:57:29your own words,
00:57:30to tell them how exciting the journey will be.
00:57:34The flame of a sunset in Arizona.
00:57:36The majestic power of Niagara Falls taking their awesome drop.
00:57:43The sweet scents of apple blossom time.
00:57:47The burning heat of summer plains.
00:57:50The snowy chill of mountain peaks.
00:57:53You must persuade them these are still wonderful things to be seen,
00:57:58even though what they'll see may be the twilight of human civilization.
00:58:01Yes, Waterloo.
00:58:08Will you take me along, please?
00:58:10Yes!
00:58:11That's wonderful!
00:58:12Lisa, it means you're free!
00:58:14Mr. Simpson!
00:58:41I'm fed up with your behavior.
00:58:46How do you think you're going to get better
00:58:47if you don't take your medicine like a good boy?
00:58:50Ma'am, if you'd sign this?
00:58:52Thanks very much.
00:58:56I often come and read here.
00:58:58It's peaceful.
00:58:59I've wanted to speak to you for some time,
00:59:01but I suppose I've always been a bit too shy.
00:59:03For luck, eh?
00:59:25Papa!
00:59:27Papa!
00:59:28Papa!
00:59:29Papa!
00:59:30Papa!
00:59:33Lisa!
00:59:39Papa!
00:59:43Huh?
00:59:45Hey!
00:59:48Lisa!
00:59:49Lisa!
00:59:53Papa!
00:59:54Papa!
00:59:56Papa!
01:00:04Lisa!
01:00:18The peace and security she has here were too strong to resist.
01:00:21But the important thing is that she chose to stay.
01:00:25It wasn't the computer.
01:00:27She chose for herself.
01:00:29That's a huge step forward.
01:00:30Let's go.
01:00:51The end of the day.
01:00:52The end of the day.
01:00:53The end of the day.
01:00:54The end of the day.
01:00:55The end of the day.
01:00:56The end of the day.
01:00:57The end of the day.
01:00:58The end of the day.
01:00:59Las Vegas.
01:01:00A city men built in the barren desert.
01:01:01To feed their equally barren greed.
01:01:02The wind blew and this place became a dead monument to futile pleasure.
01:01:04The end of the day.
01:01:07A city men built in the barren desert to feed their equally barren greed.
01:01:12The wind blew and this place became a dead monument to futile pleasure.
01:01:37Wateroo, there's something I should tell you, assuming you haven't guessed already.
01:01:51Yeah?
01:01:52We caused the wind and let it blow over the Earth.
01:01:55It was no accident. It was done deliberately.
01:01:59Hmm?
01:02:00Yes. I represent the power of a distant planet.
01:02:07We have kept watch on your world since life first appeared on it.
01:02:11The first creatures that crawled out of the water,
01:02:13the dinosaurs that ruled for so many centuries,
01:02:15and finally the coming of man.
01:02:17Till very recently, you were not thought to be a danger to us,
01:02:20but when you broke free of the Earth's gravity,
01:02:22we started to be afraid of your leader's aggressiveness.
01:02:25That they'd attack?
01:02:28We weren't sure, but we couldn't take the risk.
01:02:31So you sent the wind?
01:02:34Yes. Though since we met, I think it was a bit hard.
01:02:41There was a second reason beside the need to defend ourselves,
01:02:44and that was done for your own good.
01:02:46Men have always said what they desire most is happiness,
01:02:48and yet their actions seem to lead in the opposite way.
01:02:51By removing the baggage of their memories,
01:02:53we gave them the chance to make a new beginning.
01:02:55a beginning that might lead them towards the goal they claim to want.
01:03:06Well, now you know, I imagine you must hate me.
01:03:09When you hold me, your smile is so warm.
01:03:24I'm not afraid to be wounded now.
01:03:31I love you.
01:03:33I love you.
01:03:34I love you.
01:03:35I love you.
01:03:36You love me so strong.
01:03:38That it will fall.
01:03:39Through it to the wind.
01:03:44The way you shall image your eyes
01:03:52As well as in my soul
01:03:54Must be something special about you, baby
01:03:59I decided that I'm for you
01:04:04Nothing to cry
01:04:07Nothing to regret
01:04:11Making a thing with each other
01:04:17I wanna always sing a song for you
01:04:23I'm on your side
01:04:28My only love forever
01:04:31You're my destiny
01:04:34I will never, ever forget you
01:04:40Wateroo, you'll soon have to leave here
01:04:49I've tried to prepare you for the task
01:04:52Which only you can complete
01:04:53You must travel to the farthest corners of this land
01:04:56Then even further afield
01:04:58Wherever you find men
01:05:00You can persuade to listen to you
01:05:01Look at what they've achieved in the past
01:05:04And use the best of it
01:05:05I'm trying
01:05:10But you know, Johnny
01:05:19There's such a lot I don't understand
01:05:20And I'm enjoying the trip with Sophia so much
01:05:23If I'm serious about the job I've got to do
01:05:26Should I be enjoying myself?
01:05:28Am I just gonna drift around
01:05:29Till the time comes
01:05:31When you and I meet up again?
01:05:47What's wrong?
01:05:50Nothing
01:05:50I'm fine
01:05:52You're very quiet
01:06:00Everything's fine
01:06:02That's the trouble
01:06:03Sophia?
01:06:31Hmm?
01:06:31On your planet
01:06:34Do you have sunsets like this?
01:06:37Do you?
01:06:39Um
01:06:39A
01:06:49No
01:06:55Oh, my God.
01:07:25Oh, my God.
01:07:55Oh, my God.
01:08:25Oh, my God.
01:08:55I didn't pick up anyone on the road.
01:08:58Didn't you?
01:09:00Huh?
01:09:01You picked up Lisa and Simpson.
01:09:03I think you learned a bit yourself.
01:09:07Yeah.
01:09:09Oh.
01:09:10And now what are your plans?
01:09:12First, to destroy the Guardian.
01:09:14My people built it, so I must destroy it.
01:09:17It's up to me to take the responsibility.
01:09:20Oh.
01:09:21So it's goodbye.
01:09:22Oh.
01:09:28It was fun.
01:09:29I don't know.
01:09:41Let's go.
01:10:11I don't know.
01:10:41I don't know.
01:11:11I don't know.
01:11:41I don't know.
01:12:11I don't know.
01:12:41I don't know.
01:13:11I learned from you as well.
01:13:24But now we will learn something new together.
01:13:28Remember our first meeting?
01:13:30I'm fine.
01:13:31But how come you can speak?
01:13:33Remember San Francisco and Los Angeles?
01:13:42The Eternal City.
01:13:52Waterloo!
01:13:53Waterloo!
01:13:54Waterloo!
01:13:54Will you take me along, please?
01:13:58Lisa!
01:13:59Remember, as you continue your journey...
01:14:09As you continue your journey...
01:14:11Until someday, somewhere, you will find someone to share your task and carry it on when you've gone.
01:14:25I'll never forget, what we've done together, what we've done together, what we've seen, who we met.
01:14:37Farewell, Earth Traveler.
01:14:42Sofia, what's that?
01:14:49Sofia!
01:14:49What's that?
01:15:03What's that?
01:15:03It's the ship carrying my people.
01:15:05It's the ship carrying my people.
01:15:10What will happen now?
01:15:13Will you return our memories?
01:15:16I don't know.
01:15:18Is it better for man to have memories or not?
01:15:23Is there more pain in them or less?
01:15:25Are they more violent or less?
01:15:27How will you decide?
01:15:29It's not my decision.
01:15:31I'll tell them what I've seen here.
01:15:34And about you.
01:15:37Then it'll be decided.
01:15:46It's time to go.
01:15:49Yes.
01:16:04Let's see now.
01:16:05Maybe I'll call you Wadaru.
01:16:07What does that mean?
01:16:08It's a Japanese word that means traveler, and that's what you're going to be.
01:16:12And wherever you go, you will teach men what they've forgotten.
01:16:15That's right.
01:16:19I'm just at the beginning of a lifetime's work.
01:16:21See that leaf?
01:16:23You can make music with that.
01:16:26Here.
01:16:27Let me show you.
01:16:45That's it.
01:16:46You're learning.
01:16:47You're learning.
01:16:48You're learning.
01:16:49You're learning.

01:16:51You're learning.
01:16:53You're learning.
01:16:54You're learning.
01:16:55You're learning.
01:16:56You're learning.
01:16:57You're learning.

01:17:12You're learning.
01:17:13You're learning.
01:17:14You're learning.
01:17:15You're learning.
01:17:16You're learning.
01:17:17You're learning.
01:17:18You're learning.
01:17:19In the heart of the heart, a new wind will flow and flow and flow and flow.
01:17:32I've seen the past few times, but I've seen the different things that are different.
01:17:46If the door opens the door to open the door, I'm in my hand.
01:17:57I'll try to change the sorrow of the past.
01:18:09See, I'm in my hand.
01:18:24I'm in my destiny.
01:18:29I'm in my dream.
01:18:38And when I say I love you so long
01:18:43Nothing, nothing to cry
01:18:48We start a brand new day
01:18:54Singing it's all
01:18:56Open my heart
01:19:01Making the things with each other
01:19:08I wanna always sing a song for you
01:19:14I'm on your side
01:19:19My only love forever

01:20:15Waste out a brand new day
01:20:21Swinging it all, all with my heart
01:20:28Making the fiends with each other
