The heat and sunshine extends nationwide through the rest of the day as high pressure pushes out to the North Sea, bringing heat from the south and allowing some showers to arrive from the west. Showers in the southwest tend to drift northeastwards into Wales, and one or two isolated showers across northern England and northeast Scotland, possibly thundery. Elsewhere dry and bright. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 20/06/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Aidan McGivern.

00:00Hi there.
00:01Whilst it's southern parts of the UK where we've seen some hot and sunny weather so far
00:05this week, the heat and the sunshine extends nationwide during the rest of Friday as high
00:10pressure pushes out to the North Sea, establishing a southerly airflow, bringing heat from northern
00:16France but also allowing some instability to arrive from the west.
00:21So we've already seen a few showers into the south-west, they'll tend to drift north-eastwards
00:25into Wales, one or two showers also across parts of northern England and north-east Scotland,
00:31perhaps the odd thundery downport but these will be very isolated.
00:33For the vast majority it's dry, it's bright, some medium-level cloud drifting here and there
00:39but where we get that very strong June sunshine, temperatures reaching the mid to high 20s widely
00:43even as far north as northern mainland Scotland, Northern Ireland and the peak temperatures
00:48through the Midlands, north-west England, 30 to 32 Celsius possible.
00:53We will see some of these showers and they'll continue into the evening for parts of north-east
00:57Scotland and northern England.
00:59Eventually most places are dry overnight and we will have clear spells but some cloud will
01:04arrive into the west where it will stay humid.
01:06The most humid air is in the west, temperatures in places not dropping below 20 or 21 Celsius,
01:13so another uncomfortable night for sleeping.
01:15And then we get off to that very warm start on Saturday, temperatures shooting up quickly
01:19during the morning and into the afternoon.
01:21There's a chance of some showers and perhaps the odd thunderstorm in places particularly
01:25towards the west and south-west but the focus initially is on the rising temperatures and
01:30that very strong June sunshine, summer solstice of course, so it doesn't get much stronger
01:34than this.
01:35And temperatures as a result reaching the low 30s across parts of central and eastern England,
01:40perhaps as high in one or two spots as 33 or 34 Celsius.
01:45Edinburgh 27 Celsius but all that heat may result in some very severe thunderstorms and the main
01:53focus area, parts of north Wales, north Midlands, northern England as we go into Saturday evening
01:58for some serious downpours, large hail, gusty winds, frequent lightning as well.
02:04Not everywhere of course is going to see one of these, they'll be highly hit and miss.
02:08Some places will avoid them entirely even in that main risk area but where they do occur,
02:13there could be some considerable impacts.
