The Northern Territory government is out of step with with the Federal Government and leaves the Territory without any formal target for the rollout of renewables, or reducing CO2 emissions.

00:05And I love to talk about the fact that I love to ride my electric bike
00:08and deliver all my mail personally.
00:10This reduces the amount of stamps that I have to produce.
00:13But the Environment Minister was backpedalling
00:15on a pre-election CLP promise of emissions reductions targets.
00:21Prior to the election, the then Shadow Environment Minister Joe Hersey
00:25told the NT Environment Centre,
00:26we are committed to the government target of 43% reduction
00:31in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
00:34But today in estimates, it was revealed no such target
00:37was in the government's plans.
00:39This is not current government policy, no.
00:42What we're more focused on is ensuring we're protecting our environment
00:45whilst maintaining stability and lowest possible prices for Territorians.
00:50It follows comments this week from CLP Senator Jacinta Nampajempa-Price,
00:55who said she'd be taking the party's position
00:57to abandon a 2050 net zero emissions target to Canberra.
01:02The country Liberal Party's position is one that supports
01:06abandoning the net zero target emissions
01:08and supporting withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.
01:12And these are conversations that are yet to be had
01:15within the Liberal Party room.
01:17But the NT CLP government is still committed
01:20to the longer-term net zero target.
01:23Yes, so that's a matter for the party.
01:25And of course, Senator Price has been very vocal about that.
01:29It's not a position of our government
01:30and we'll continue with the work that we're doing.
01:32Despite scrapping the short-term emissions target,
01:35the NT government says it remains committed
01:37to mitigating the effects of climate change.
01:40It's currently undertaking an assessment
01:42of the risks of rising temperatures
01:44on the Northern Territory's liveability
01:46with the outcome to help shape decision-making.
