doing his bit to reduce greenhouse gases.
00:05
And I love to talk about the fact that I love to ride my electric bike
00:08
and deliver all my mail personally.
00:10
This reduces the amount of stamps that I have to produce.
00:13
But the Environment Minister was backpedalling
00:15
on a pre-election CLP promise of emissions reductions targets.
00:21
Prior to the election, the then Shadow Environment Minister Joe Hersey
00:25
told the NT Environment Centre,
00:26
we are committed to the government target of 43% reduction
00:31
in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
00:34
But today in estimates, it was revealed no such target
00:37
was in the government's plans.
00:39
This is not current government policy, no.
00:42
What we're more focused on is ensuring we're protecting our environment
00:45
whilst maintaining stability and lowest possible prices for Territorians.
00:50
It follows comments this week from CLP Senator Jacinta Nampajempa-Price,
00:55
who said she'd be taking the party's position
00:57
to abandon a 2050 net zero emissions target to Canberra.
01:02
The country Liberal Party's position is one that supports
01:06
abandoning the net zero target emissions
01:08
and supporting withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.
01:12
And these are conversations that are yet to be had
01:15
within the Liberal Party room.
01:17
But the NT CLP government is still committed
01:20
to the longer-term net zero target.
01:23
Yes, so that's a matter for the party.
01:25
And of course, Senator Price has been very vocal about that.
01:29
It's not a position of our government
01:30
and we'll continue with the work that we're doing.
01:32
Despite scrapping the short-term emissions target,
01:35
the NT government says it remains committed
01:37
to mitigating the effects of climate change.
01:40
It's currently undertaking an assessment
01:42
of the risks of rising temperatures
01:44
on the Northern Territory's liveability
01:46
with the outcome to help shape decision-making.
