During a press briefing on Tuesday, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander cracked a joke when he was asked about five of his mayoral opponents calling for his release.
Transcript
00:00Fellow mayoral candidates came here within 90 minutes of you being arrested.
00:05I thank all of them.
00:07What does that say about the tenor in the mayor's race that here we are?
00:11Voting has already begun. We're a week from the election.
00:13And people are embracing down to your friends.
00:16Was one of them Andrew Cuomo?
00:19Imagine that.
00:21Look, I mean,
00:22this is a critical time to have a mayor who will stand up to ICE and stand up to Donald Trump
00:32and insist on due process and the laws of this city.
00:36This is a sanctuary city.
00:38I was proud to co-sponsor those laws.
00:40And I'm going to show up and defend them.
00:43And partly why I'm running for mayor is that New Yorkers deserve better than a mayor like Eric Adams
00:50who sold New Yorkers out in a deal for his own pardon with Donald Trump.
00:56And New Yorkers deserve better in a mayor than Andrew Cuomo,
00:59who on that debate stage last week, when I asked him,
01:04why did you deny those immigrant subway cleaners who risked their lives during COVID
01:08the prevailing wage and the health care they deserved?
01:11All he could think about was, hey, were they,
01:16and I couldn't believe he called them illegal.
01:18And you could tell in his head, all he was worried about was,
01:23would it reflect badly on him?
01:25And what New Yorkers are deciding right now is,
01:29will we have a mayor who stands up for the traditions of this city,
01:33who protects immigrant New Yorkers and who protects all New Yorkers?
01:37I am very grateful to the other mayoral candidates who came out here to call for my release,
01:43to stand up for those traditions.
01:46And I really hope New Yorkers will elect one of us.
01:49Courtney!
