00:00Gates said have confirmed the appointment of former Blythe Spartans
00:04and Darlington boss Alan Armstrong as their new manager,
00:08with Armstrong responding to criticism following his arrival.
00:13A little bit, but when you look at the overall picture,
00:16what I've done in my past, it's not too bad.
00:19Yes, the ending's...
00:20It's never great for a manager when you leave a club,
00:23when you get sacked from a club, it's never great.
00:24You get sacked for one reason, and that was underperforming,
00:27and that's what it was.
00:28And you've got to look at the years I'd done before that.
00:31And what I'd done at Darlington,
00:33compared to what it was when I first went in,
00:36it's a little bit deja vu, I will say that.
00:39But I turned that club around, it was in quite a bit of debt.
00:43I think I had nine players which took up the whole budget,
00:46and I turned them into a decent squad of players
00:49who had some great cup runs, great memories there.
00:52Top of the league, flying at one point,
00:54and then, as I say after that,
00:56it just never went our way.
00:58We lost players, never replaced them,
01:01and unfortunately I think after seven years in management,
01:04it took its toll.
01:05I built a team every six months,
01:07and I think it just took its toll on us,
01:09and I had to have a break from football, in all honesty.
01:11And Newcastle United, as well as Sunderland,
01:15are now awaiting the release of the new Premier League fixtures,
01:19which come out at nine o'clock on the 18th of June.
01:22I'd almost forgotten about that, to be honest,
01:25in amongst today, but of course that was there yesterday,
01:28and make it more difficult.
01:31I think the Derby games are obviously very intense games,
01:34and they are challenging for both teams,
01:37but I think we'll have the attitude that we'll look forward to it,
01:39and I think it's great for the area.
01:42I think it brings more energy and drama to the games,
01:48so let's bring it on.
01:49Change is a natural process that you go through in life,
01:53and a football squad has to evolve.
01:55It has to change.
01:57The same people coming back to form the same squad is not healthy,
02:00but that's always very difficult to do,
02:04because you're losing people that have given you,
02:06in some cases, absolutely everything in every moment,
02:09in every training session, in every game.
02:10Some people have done unbelievable things to help you achieve success.
