Eddie Howe: Carabao Cup final win gave Newcastle confidence to secure Champions League

00:00Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has said that the club's Carabao Cup win in March

00:05inspired them to pursue further success in their league campaign,

00:09which ultimately saw the Magpies qualify for the Champions League.

00:14The reaction after the Cup final was pivotal and we sort of knew it because we had a massive, massive high.

00:22We had the bus parade, which was another massive high and then you're thinking,

00:25how are we going to come down from this? What's the reaction going to be?

00:30There were concerns for me that that would be the case.

00:34It would be like massive high and then drop off and then season fizzles out.

00:38Always remembered for the Cup win, but just a bit of disappointment and regret in the league.

00:43But I think it boils down to the player's mindset.

00:47I saw a real confidence lift from what the Cup final brought us.

00:50It gave us a we-can-beat-anybody feel.

00:54Came back and played really, really well. Never looked back, really.

00:57So I think the win against Liverpool did us so much good and I think that will help us again next year

01:03in our internal belief and what we're capable of, I hope.

01:07And that's how it had to be used for the positive.

01:10And Sunderland head coach Regis Lebris has said that the emotions experienced by him and his squad

01:17during Sunderland's play-off campaign that saw them promoted back to the Premier League

01:21for the first time since 2017 were crazy and like nothing he has experienced before in coaching.

01:28Yeah. Emotionally, it's impressive because the two semi-finals, the end of the second leg,

01:37it was it was absolutely crazy. And today it was the case again.

01:41So to create this connection, this emotion, these memories as well for the fans, for us,

01:48we need to live these tough moments. And yeah, it will be really important in my life, sure.

01:58Yeah, I think Sunderland is still building their structure and we'll have to make another step,

02:06an important step to prepare the squad for the Premier League. But we'll see in a few days.
