00:00Let's hear exactly what Donald Trump had to say just before he left that G7 summit in Canada.
00:07I have to be back. Very important. I want to just thank our great host.
00:13Thank you in Canada. But you probably see what I see.
00:17And I have to be back as soon as I can.
00:21I'm going to have dinner with these wonderful leaders and then I get on the plane and I have to be back early.
00:27Donald Trump there. Well, Ketovan Gordistani, our international affairs editor, is with us here on set.
00:34Trump, Ketovan, tell us what the latest is on Donald Trump there and what he had to say.
00:40And also this joint statement that's now been issued by the summit.
00:44Well, first of all, after he had left, the French president, Emmanuel Macron,
00:49seemed to indicate that Donald Trump was going back to Washington to sort of try to come up with a ceasefire proposal between Israel and Iran.
01:01He said that to reporters.
01:03And just as he was getting on the plane, Donald Trump responded on Truth Social with some not very kind words for the French president,
01:12saying that he was publicity seeking and had mistakenly said that there was this work on a ceasefire.
01:19He has no idea what I am now on my way to Washington for, but it is certainly has nothing to do with a ceasefire.
01:27Adding it will be much bigger than that without giving any more information.
01:33There is some reporting that Donald Trump will be meeting with his whole national security team in the Situation Room when he gets back to Washington,
01:42meaning that this might be something that is pretty big, but we don't know exactly what that will be.
01:48When it comes to the G7 joint statement, what is definitely positive is the fact that there was a joint statement,
01:58because initially the White House and Donald Trump had sort of telegraphed that the U.S. would not be signing on to any joint statement.
02:06In the end, they actually did so.
02:08But once you look at sort of the contents of that statement, it is pretty generic, a call for de-escalation at a time of rising conflicts.
02:20The fact that they repeated Israel's right to defend itself, that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
02:28All of these things are things that they have all said multiple times before.
02:32And of course, the concern for the well-being of civilians in both Israel and Iran.
02:39One thing that was interesting was that they did call Iran the main source of regional instability,
02:48but there wasn't much mention of Israel, which was the first to start bombing the Iranians.
02:55So this statement, pretty generic, even though the fact that it exists is already a pretty big deal.
03:02One thing to note also is that the fact that Donald Trump left to supposedly go and deal with the situation
03:10does sort of symbolize the fact that he believes he alone is going to deal with that situation,
03:16rather than what we've seen in the past, which is that we are stronger together, especially in the G7.
03:22We're going to find a solution together with a consensus.
03:25He is definitely showing that it's America first, America alone, and they will maybe come up with a solution.
03:32But it seemed a little bit that he was wasting his time with the rest of the G7
03:37and wanted to get back to the White House as soon as possible.
03:40Yeah, Donald Trump there, as you say.
03:42We have from Nogha as well the Israelis trying to get the U.S., if you like, more involved in the conflict.
03:48I mean, what is the U.S. position at the moment, would you say?
03:51Which way is it leaning?
03:52Well, there have been some mixed messages from the Trump administration on two elements about what comes next.
04:01One is where things stand with a possible nuclear deal.
04:06Donald Trump initially said that Iran should have made a deal.
04:10Then he warned the residents of Tehran to evacuate, even though we didn't know why he was making that announcement.
04:18But then he also suggested that a nuclear deal could still be done.
04:22And he is still considering – he just repeated that to reporters on Air Force One – that he's still considering sending either Steve Witkoff, his advisor,
04:32or the vice president, J.D. Vance, to meet with Iranian officials to continue those talks, even though that has yet to be confirmed.
04:42But it shows that he believes maybe that, given the situation, Iran might be sort of forced into a possible deal because of the Israeli strikes.
04:53Then there's some mixed messaging on the question of U.S. involvement.
04:57We have seen that there has been forced deployment in and strengthening in the Mediterranean by the U.S. forces.
05:07But the U.S. is insisting that that's defensive.
05:10The Secretary of Defense, Pete Hexed, said,
05:13We are postured defensively in the region to be strong in pursuit of a peace deal.
05:19So far, they're insisting they're not getting involved.
05:23And Donald Trump was asked several times while he was at the G7 what would trigger the United States getting involved.
05:30And he refused to answer that question.
05:33There are two signs that he does not want to get involved or does not want to be dragged into a bigger war.
05:39One was that reported veto on the killing of the Iranian supreme leader.
05:47And the other issue that shows that he doesn't yet want to get involved is the fact that the U.S. is holding back that gigantic 30,000-pound bunker-busting bomb.
06:00And the aircraft that could carry that, they're not so far giving that to the Israelis.
06:06That would be what Israel would need in order to reach the deepest nuclear facilities in Iran.
06:14And that is in part because you have around Donald Trump people who disagree on what comes next with Iran.
06:21You have the hawkish wing that wants to help Israel actually finish the job in Iran.
06:26And you have the more MAGA wing that has campaigned all of those months and years on no forever wars, no involvement anywhere, especially not in the Middle East.
06:38This is not our problem is their motto, if you will.
06:42And so Donald Trump is sort of back and forth on that issue.
06:46But I guess we'll see maybe later on today what happens once he's back in the White House.
