00:00Oh, the shot heard around the world here.
00:02Maybe the trade heard around the world.
00:03It wasn't J.J. Spauld yesterday taking down a U.S. Open championship.
00:06It wasn't Oklahoma City getting back into a series against the Pacers.
00:10It wasn't Brad Marchand looking like he's 25 years old and the best player in hockey.
00:14It was the San Francisco Giants 15 minutes before their game saying,
00:18we're just a crowd, Raphael Devers.
00:20We don't need our starting pitcher in this game.
00:22And oh my goodness, the baseball world erupted yesterday.
00:25And if we take a look at a tweet by Robert Murray,
00:27the San Francisco Giants are acquiring Raphael Devers from the Boston Red Sox for Jordan Hicks,
00:32Kyle Harrison, and more, according to sources familiar with the deal.
00:36We knew Raphael Devers was having a tough time in Boston where you're basically saying,
00:41we don't want you playing here.
00:42Can you move positions?
00:43Do something else.
00:44He starts the season like 0 for 150 it felt like and finally finds himself in a groove at the plate,
00:50hitting 272, what, 15 home runs on the season.
00:53Now he's shipped to San Francisco.
00:55So let's start here.
00:56Before we get into the actual doings of the trade itself, Joe,
01:00tell me your thoughts when you saw that Raphael Devers was traded last night to the Giants.
01:06I saw Passan was the tweet that I saw.
01:11And I was like, wow, I, you know, anybody else, I might've scratched my head a little bit,
01:15but I'm like, this can't be, is this serious?
01:18And then you kind of look back over the last couple of months, Donnie,
01:21and you're going, you literally had management fly on the road on location to meet with him about this.
01:31And he basically told them to, you know what?
01:34And from that point on, what is management going to do?
01:38Nobody who's paying you $313.5 million is going to hear anything from you.
01:44They'll figure out a way to get rid of you.
01:46And that's exactly what they did.
01:48Now let's understand this too, with the Red Sox.
01:50We're not talking about, like so many times we get angry or we, let's just say, we make jokes about,
01:54oh, look, Pittsburgh's got a really good player.
01:56Well, in three years, he'll be in pinstrikes.
01:58They don't want to pay anybody.
01:59You are talking about the Boston Red Sox, Joe.
02:01Third in line in Forbes magazine of most expensive Major League Baseball franchises.
02:05Like they go from the north of Maine all the way down to Connecticut, a massive region of Red Sox fans here.
02:12They sell out every single night at Fenway Park, one of the biggest brands in baseball.
02:16They shouldn't be talking about, okay, we shed salaries.
02:19We'll get that in just a moment here.
02:20But like Mookie Betts got traded.
02:22Xander Bogart's left as a free agent.
02:24Raphael Devers is now is gone.
02:26Can you imagine, aren't you supposed to have these building blocks as franchise guys
02:30that are going to stick with you and be legends in town and make you even more money?
02:33We don't know if we can afford Mookie Betts, Xander Bogart's, and boy, we signed Raphael Devers,
02:39but I don't like signing this check for 50-whatever-odd-million dollars per year that we're paying this guy.
02:44Talk to me about Boston acting like, well, we're going to build for the future.
02:47Like New York City, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, you don't build for the future.
02:52The future is always now.
02:53How do you let these guys go?
02:56And that's the problem.
02:57But in defense of the Red Sox, Mookie Betts, at the time that was coming up for the contract,
03:04was not a great situation with the Red Sox ownership.
03:09You know, timing is everything in life, Donnie, right?
03:12It was not the right time for Mookie Betts.
03:15Xander Bogart's chose to leave in free agency.
03:18So it wasn't like they got rid of him.
03:20They just didn't match the money that the Padres were throwing around at everybody.
03:25This, well, this is much more than just we don't want to pay him.
03:30Here, they actually paid a guy $315 million.
03:33The problem is when you pay somebody $315 million,
03:37there's an expectation of being the franchise player.
03:40Franchise players don't include telling ownership to go, you know what,
03:45and then say, I'm not playing this position.
03:47I think Devers left them no choice.
03:50But to go, see you later, this is not the face of the franchise we want moving forward.
03:56It is, because, again, he was the guy in the franchise.
03:58And usually, it's like they bow to you.
04:00Like, don't you remember the New York Yankees?
04:02Like, A-Rod comes to town.
04:03Like, dude, A-Rod is a way better shortstop.
04:05Dude is like, I'm the captain.
04:07I don't even care.
04:08I will be a shortstop.
04:09Oh, we'll let it go.
04:10And they end up winning the World Series in 2009.
04:12But like, Rafael Devers is the guy on the team.
04:14Like, okay, we're going to bring somebody else in.
04:15We want you to move.
04:16He's like, no, like, no, we really want you to move.
04:19And right away, it upset the start of the season for the Red Sox as he was terrible.
04:23But let's look at the get back here also for the Red Sox.
04:25Hey, we got six unbelievable prospects and two major league ready pitchers.
04:30You get Hicks.
04:30The guy's got a six and a half ERA this year.
04:32And Harrison, you take a look at his stats for the past couple years.
04:35He's never finished south of four in ERA.
04:37So that's some of the questions.
04:38It's like, well, it was just a salary dump.
04:41Like, you didn't even get anything back.
04:43We could tell your fans, hey, we got a cornerstone building block.
04:47Let's go.
04:49What is it worth, though, Donnie, to cut the cancer out of a locker room that will infect
04:53the organization for the next five years?
04:57Because as they don't win games or don't compete for World Series,
05:01Rafael Devers gets worse.
05:04And less people want to come and play with him.
05:06I think they just decided to cut it early as opposed to let it fester, which could very
05:13well be what happened in that locker room.
05:16Ah, more Rafael Devers talk.
05:17A big trade in Major League Baseball now.
05:21Yep, we got you.
05:22Oh, the shocking news last night.
05:24We were settling in for a little bit of Sunday night baseball.
05:26Looking forward to Kyle Harrison on the mound yesterday.
05:28Oh, no, he scratched 15 minutes before the start yesterday.
05:31Why?
05:32Because Rafael Devers was coming to town here and Harrison was being shipped out of town.
05:36And as we told you, Boston is going to receive Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks,
05:40outfield prospect James Tibbs III, and rookie league right-hander Jose Bello.
05:45I want to say, look, can we use Bello on that?
05:46Is it Bello at that point here?
05:47You're going to have to find out.
05:48Who knows?
05:49He might not be a Major League Baseball, Joe, for another five years, but it happened last
05:52night.
05:53Understand this.
05:54Here were some of the key components that came in because now it looks like more than,
05:58hey, like, we like this guy, but boy, he's going to make so much more money,
06:02which is $250 million until 2033, still left on his contract, where it was like, you know
06:08what?
06:08The big ingredient was not the actual prospects, Joe.
06:10It was the fact that San Francisco was going to pay the full freight of that salary and
06:15not get any demands from Boston to say, hey, pick up 25, 35, 50, $100 million of that contract.
06:21It almost seems to me like, yes, Devers is a great player, but they just wanted to shift
06:25that salary and say, we might've made a mistake on the contract.
06:27We're going to get out from under it, which is still a terrible look for the Boston Red
06:31Sox.
06:33Yeah, it's, listen, the optics of it were not good the minute they asked him to play
06:38another position and he said no, and the cat was out of the bag at that point.
06:42Again, you know, ownership is about leverage.
06:46Billionaires are about leverage, Donnie.
06:47You give somebody 315 million, they expect you to be a team player.
06:53Telling them, absolutely not.
06:55I don't care what the team needs, I'm not playing it, is not exactly getting your money's
07:01worth of the 315 million.
07:03So if I'm them, you'd rather cut it sooner rather than later, because if he's a malcontent
07:09now, what happens when they're not winning and competing for championships over the next
07:14two or three years into that contract, Donnie?
07:16So if you can get somebody to take it off your hands now, yeah, I'll take it for bubblegum.
07:21Yeah, we'll certainly find out what that is, but when you take a look at the depth chart
07:27here, obviously for the Boston Red Sox, Alex Bregman is due to come back soon, and also
07:32they brought up a plethora of young, talented players that they feel are going to be the
07:36future and should be able to step in.
07:38It's just interesting the timing as it went down, because typically, Joe, what happens
07:41here, right?
07:42You wait towards the trade deadline and you really ramp up with offers.
07:45Hey, Devers is on the market, make me your best offers.
07:48So many times we hear that a guy is up on the market, willing to be traded, and it takes
07:52a couple weeks for that to happen, but this one just like struck and almost felt like the
07:55dead of the night, like nobody saw this coming and a deal was made, and how crazy it was because
08:00Harrison was supposed to pitch last night, and it wasn't scratched like two in the afternoon.
08:05He was scratched right before he was due to pitch, as almost like, all right, here's the
08:09pressure.
08:09I'm sending this guy out to the mound.
08:11You want to get this deal done or not?
08:12And the deal got done, and also, the Dodgers picked up a victory yesterday, but that's on the
08:16other hand, but the Giants have been playing better baseball.
08:19They did need a bat.
08:20So from a Giants perspective, I can see why they're excited.
08:23Big market team can afford the contract, desperately needing a bat, and maybe Raphael Devers can
08:28be that bat for them.
08:30Well, and my question is, too, how many teams can you pick up the phone and negotiate with
08:37to take a $315 million contract, Donnie?
08:40It's not like you could have held out for a better deal.
08:43You got the Giants, who happen to be now, what, two games behind the Dodgers in the
08:48state?
08:48Nobody saw that coming.
08:50You got Willie Adamas.
08:51You've got Chapman.
08:52You got Robbie Ray.
08:54You got Logan Webb.
08:55You just don't have any power, certainly from the left-hand side.
09:00So Devers' numbers dwarf everybody, the whole team's numbers, when it comes to power.
09:05So it's a great move for the Giants.
09:07It's a win-now move for the Giants.
09:09And for the Red Sox, they found one team to take a $315 million contract, and they jumped
09:15on it.
09:16And by the way, these weren't panic moves either, right?
09:19Like, we weren't like, oh, my goodness, it was the last I could take before the deadline.
09:22You look at the Red Sox, 37 and 36, which might not seem great here, but how about five
09:26straight wins, eight of their past 10, playing really good baseball and knocking off the
09:30Yankees?
09:31Then you take a look at the San Francisco Giants, who have now lost two in a row, but before
09:34that, streaking as well.
09:36So these two teams, almost on like the fly, saying, we're having a good season, at least
09:39right now here.
09:40Let's see if we can energize this team.
09:42The younger energy now that comes in with the Boston Red Sox, and an extra bat for the
09:46San Francisco Giants.
09:47So if we take a look at some pricing right now, we still have a long way to go in the
09:50Major League Baseball season.
09:51How about to make the playoffs, the Giants, at a minus 170 price, and the Red Sox at a
09:57plus 190 price?
09:58Talking about this season, could this jumpstart the Giants here?
10:01Could this be a good thing for the locker room for the Boston Red Sox, as you've been stating
10:05here, that this trade could actually be a catalyst for both of these teams, possibly
10:09making the playoffs this year?
10:11Listen, I think time will tell.
10:13And you mentioned Alex Bregman will be back.
10:17They've got an Obama Red Sox fan.
10:19I am so happy that they're finally bringing up the young guys, you know, the studs that
10:24are supposed to be in the future organization.
10:26Now's the time, right?
10:27Are they going to compete for a World Series?
10:32Likely not.
10:33But they're certainly going to make it fun.
10:36Can this be a win-win?
10:38Absolutely can be a win-win.
10:40What have the Dodgers shown us to believe that this is a 110-win team and the Giants should
10:45just pack it in along with everyone else in the West here?
10:47There are two games behind them at this point here.
10:50And now they've got one of the best power hitters in the game in that lineup.
10:53Giants are, yeah, they're in it to win it, and they're in to win it now.
10:57I like it.
10:58I do like the move.
10:59But also funny, too, because it just shows you how much money is involved in baseball
11:02and ownership of a team where it doesn't matter what you do.
11:04Like, if you are a general manager, obviously with a contract this side of Devers, it has
11:08to be okayed by the front office, meaning the ownership group goes, yeah, go ahead.
11:12I'll assign those dollars to that.
11:14But you lose so big in the Mookie Betts trade where the fan base was so angry.
11:18Devers was coming up for a contract.
11:20It was almost like he was in the right spot at the right time, knowing that if Devers
11:23just walked out the door for nothing, they would have burnt Fenway Park down at that
11:27point.
11:28So it's like, we have to sign the guy.
11:29Hopefully it works well.
11:30And a year or so into the deal, it's like, this really isn't working out in our favor.
11:35Let's move him here.
11:35So maybe you can credit them for being proactive, but also at the same time, whack them on the
11:39back of the head for saying, like, what did you sign the guy for anyway?
11:42You should have just moved him when he had extreme value and was still under team control
11:45at that point.
11:46And speaking of heavy, heavy favorites in Major League Baseball, before the season and in the
11:51season, it has always been the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League.
11:55If we look at the FanDuel Sportsbook here on the pricing here to win the NL pennant,
11:59it always starts and feels like it finishes with the Los Angeles Dodgers at a plus 130
12:03price, followed by the Mets plus 440.
12:05Then the Cubs at 7-1, along with the Phillies at 7-1 before we get to outside of 10-1.
12:11But if you look at the standings currently here in the National League, it's not the Los
12:15Angeles Dodgers here, Joe, with the best record.
12:17It's the New York Mets, even though the Mets did get swept over the weekend, still in first
12:21place with 45 wins in the NL, followed by the Cubs at 44 wins, the Dodgers at 40 wins,
12:26and the Philadelphia Phillies at 42, followed by the Giants.
12:29So let's start here once again.
12:30It seems like it always starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
12:33There's no panic in here, but I think some of the expectations were, oh, 43-29, which is
12:37a good record.
12:38We expected them to have like, you know, 60 wins and 10 losses or what have you here as they
12:43would run away with the Major League Baseball season.
12:45How do you factor in the Dodgers with that heavy price, but still not in first place technically
12:50in the National League in that pennant race?
12:53Listen, at this point, a lot of people thought the Dodgers would be up eight games in the West
12:58and you could pretty much stick a fork in everybody else.
13:01And now all of a sudden, they're forced to push up the timeline of Otani being able to
13:06pitch as he returns to the mound because the injuries have piled up with that rotation now.
13:13And now you're bringing up Otani.
13:15The more Otani does, like pitching, the bigger risk you have of him being hurt and other things
13:22going wrong.
13:23Still a ton of baseball to play here this season.
13:27But at this point, you can't tell me the Dodgers are worth investing and holding your
13:32money up for plus 130 at this point, Donnie.
13:35No way.
13:35Yeah, you take a look at that pitching staff here.
13:38It's just injured.
13:39And as we know, Joe, I always equate it to, hey, in Madden, you can turn the injuries off.
13:43You can't do that in professional sports.
13:45But the one thing we do know, so deep and so talented with prospects in an endless pocketbook
13:50that they can go out and spend their way into, hey, let's get another starting pitcher.
13:54News broke over the weekend.
13:55Who are they looking at now, Joe?
13:57Sandy Alcantara here of the Miami Marlins saying, oh, well, he's probably going to be up
14:01and we can just add him to the rotation.
14:02Now, Sandy hasn't been all that great this season as is, but just giving you the heads
14:06up that even though they're stacked, if those pitchers come back, they're always looking
14:10to add on.
14:11But let me ask you this question, like for real or not for real, how are you feeling
14:14about those Chicago Cubs?
14:1644 and 28, a really good lineup.
14:18Pete Crow Armstrong has been absolutely spectacular.
14:21The pitching staff has held up, even though Justin Steele down for the season with the elbow
14:25injury.
14:25Do we feel that the Cubs can be a player here at this point?
14:28Because when you're looking at the pricing, they're third in line.
14:30Yeah, I'm not a believer in the, I don't like the pitching staff.
14:36I don't like the bullpen.
14:37I, you know, Imanaga is still questionable as to when he might return.
14:41And by the way, they can barely beat the Pirates.
14:44They're not scoring any runs either now.
14:47Yeah.
14:47You know what we're going to do here in this next segment, Joe?
14:49I'm going to ask you a team.
14:50Can they get up off the mat or is it just a wrap for 2025 in the National League?
14:55We'll find out who that team is next.
14:56Is it over, Joe Ranieri?
15:01Tease before the break right here on the early line.
15:03Major League Baseball, National League.
15:04Like, we got some separators here.
15:06Like, we know the Mets are a good team.
15:07The Cubs are a good team.
15:08The Dodgers, the Phillies, the Giants making moves now with Raphael Devers.
15:11The Padres are waiting for them to wake up.
15:13Who's going to come out of the Central?
15:14Can the Brewers fight?
15:15Can the Reds fight?
15:16Are the Diamondbacks going to wake up?
15:18But Joe, that's not the team I'm talking about.
15:2019 to 1 right now to win the pennant.
15:21That's those Atlanta Braves.
15:23Striders back.
15:23Ooh, finally had a good performance.
15:25Ronald Acuna has been sensational.
15:27They sit at 31 and 39 and got embarrassed yesterday about one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball.
15:32So let me ask you this question.
15:34Still a long way to go.
15:35But you are what your record says you are.
15:3831 and 39.
15:40It looked like the Braves had it going for a little bit, right?
15:42Back over 500.
15:43Okay, now we found our level.
15:45They're just a bad baseball team right now.
15:47Are they redeemable with a legitimate chance to, one, make the playoffs and do some damage?
15:53Well, listen, currently right now, they're not worth anything.
15:58And the bullpen has been absolutely suspect.
16:02You would hope that when Acuna got back that the offense would get a little more consistency.
16:08That hasn't happened.
16:10Now, Strider is still trying to work his way back in.
16:13He still doesn't have the kind of command he did.
16:15It's going to be a minute before that happens.
16:18There isn't a whole, like, when you're throwing out Grant Holmes every fourth or fifth game here, Donnie, to be your starting pitching, and it hasn't changed.
16:30You've got some issues here.
16:31And not even so much pitching, but this offense is about as inconsistent as I have seen.
16:38It's not clicking, and until it does, you can't take the Braves seriously at all.
16:44But they've also shown an ability during the trade deadline to go out and try and improve the team.
16:49So, you know, I would wait and see here with the Braves to this point.
16:53Yeah, just waiting for them to wake up.
16:55Like, the players are there.
16:56Like, if Strider comes back, I understand you missed Schalver there with the elbow injury.
17:01Schwellenbach's still good.
17:02They'll make some moves here.
17:03And I trust that front office, like you said, because it isn't as if we have 30 games left in the season.
17:08The majority of the season is still there.
17:10And also, the expanded wild card with seven, you know, more teams, I should say, are making it in than in the past.
17:16You still have opportunities.
17:17But, boy, they don't give you a lot of life on a day-to-day basis.
17:19Like, what is going on at this point?
17:21Yeah, that's the Atlanta Braves.
17:22Let's switch it over to the American League because what year is it?
17:25Like, is Sparky Anderson, the manager of the Detroit Tigers?
17:29They lead the American League at 46 wins, two and a half games clear of the New York Yankees, who are all losers of their past three games.
17:38The Detroit Tigers have lost their past two as well, but still holding on up top, which is crazy, followed by the Yankees, the Astros, and the Rays in the standings here.
17:45If we look at the odds, the Yankees at a 2-1 price here to win.
17:49You take a look at the Tigers, plus 290.
17:50The Astros coming out of nowhere, it feels like, here in 2025 after being, it feels like, buried early in the season.
17:56They're now in third place in the odds market at a 6-1 price.
17:59It feels really top-heavy right now, but the heaviest team, the Detroit Tigers.
18:05How about that?
18:07Listen, they were a very public bet preseason to run the tables and win the Central and win the pennant and yada, yada, yada.
18:18And the reality is, this team has been fortunate enough to have one of the weakest schedules to date, Donnie.
18:25And it's not their fault.
18:26You only play the teams that are in front of you.
18:28But the reality is, outside of Scooble, I'm not buying this Detroit team.
18:34And not even so much pitching-wise, I'm not buying them offensively either here.
18:39I think the Tigers are a sinking ship at some point.
18:42They will come back down to reality.
18:44I don't think they'll be there come September when we're talking about the top teams in the American League.
18:50You know what's interesting, too, about the American League as compared to the National League?
18:53It feels like it's more up for grabs.
18:55Like, we know the Dodgers are going to be there.
18:57You know the Phillies will be there.
18:58The Mets look like they're good.
18:59Who knows if the Braves can get it together?
19:00But the Cubs actually look like a really good baseball team, one of the better 1-9 lineups in the National League.
19:05But I say to myself, I say, all right, well, if it's not the Tigers and it's not the Yankees, like, it has to be somebody.
19:11Like, the Astros aren't overpowering, but they're waiting on Alvarez to get back as that power bat in the lineup there.
19:16That could help out.
19:17Jose Altuve playing better baseball than he was to start the season.
19:21The Rays, the Jays, the Mariners, the Twins, and the Red Sox.
19:23There is a team that you could get a great price point because I like the Rays lineup, you know, 15-1 now.
19:29I like the Blue Jays, 16-1.
19:31Who knows if the Red Sox actually had addition by subtraction here, and they can catapult once they get some of their players back in the younger players in that lineup start to provide.
19:40Is there a team, Joe, let's just say 15-1 or higher, that you feel might be able to make a run at this pennant?
19:46Yes, the Rangers.
19:49Absolutely the Texas Rangers.
19:51It is by low, and right now you can get them low.
19:55Great start by, if they can get Kumar Rocker to do what he did yesterday and start settling down a little bit, DeGrom is DeGrom again.
20:04This is a very dangerous team.
20:06We know when healthy, that lineup can score runs in bunches.
20:10I like Bochy, like the Rangers' opportunity at this price.
20:15Wake up, Corey Seager.
20:17We need you, baby.
20:18We need you.
20:19More Major League Baseball on day.
20:21Major League Baseball day to day, we love it.
20:24It's that ultimate poker game, Joe Ranieri.
20:26Each and every day, a new hand that you get, a new set of lineups here, new pitchers on the mound, and momentum, as they say, is only as good as the pitcher that you have on the mound the next day.
20:34Let me ask you this question about yesterday.
20:36A lot of teams out here, it's hard to sweep teams, right?
20:39Three-game series, even if they're bad baseball teams, you expect they're going to get at least one.
20:43So many sweeps yesterday in Major League Baseball, and that's not even where, Joe, I'm going to start on this one.
20:48There was a game that finished 10-1 yesterday.
20:51The losing pitcher had 15 strikeouts in that game, and 10 runs were put up by the Colorado Rockies.
20:59You might say, like, oh, wait a second.
21:00Was that the Yankees in Colorado?
21:01Like, did they, you know, score 15?
21:03No, no.
21:03The Colorado Rockies beat the Braves 10-1 when the Braves' starting pitcher had 15 Ks.
21:09Help me, Joe.
21:10Help me on this one.
21:12It gets worse than that.
21:14The Braves were actually losing 1-0, even though that Grant Holmes, the starting pitcher, had not allowed a hit or a walk through five innings, and they were still losing the game.
21:25Not to mention, Colorado brings back Austin Gomber off the I.L.
21:30Hasn't pitched since March, and he comes in and absolutely dominates, allows two hits, no runs in five innings, making his season debut.
21:41It could not get any more embarrassing for the Atlanta Braves than what just happened yesterday, at Truist Park, no less.
21:49Absolutely incredible.
21:49And by the way, we were bringing this up yesterday on the show because, you know, the lines pop up briefly there for the overnight lines.
21:55Did you know the Atlanta Braves, when Gomber was announced to start with Holmes on the mound, flashed at minus 500 here in New Jersey on the FanDuel Sportsbook?
22:04Now, granted, you got a great discount of 360 at game time, but that's the type of talent we're saying, like, this is automatic.
22:10Like, I'm going to throw this in every anchor leg of any parlay because it'll add minimum action, but it's a guaranteed winner.
22:16Like, it wasn't even 3-2 or 2-1, Joe.
22:18They got beat 10-1 in that game from the Rockies.
22:21So the questions again on the Braves, can they wake up?
22:24Boy, that's certainly not a good sign.
22:26It's somebody waking up here.
22:27And how about the Red Sox cleaning up the Yankees this weekend, which included a 2-0 victory yesterday, where Bayo was fantastic and outdid Freed.
22:35The Yanks in a little bit of a free fall.
22:36The Red Sox are like, hey, Devers, thanks for that home run.
22:39See you on the West Coast when we see at this point.
22:41The Sox here starting to build some momentum in 2025 by taking down the Yanks.
22:47Well, yeah, but the problem is the Yankees have stopped hitting here.
22:51They've kind of hit a bit of a rough patch, and that usually starts when you have Aaron Judge.
22:57Striking out, what, 9, 10 times in the series.
23:01One hits.
23:01Oh, boy.
23:02He came up with an opportunity yesterday, I think, first and second in that game where he could have gotten in the eighth.
23:10It was still a 2-0 game.
23:12And what does he do?
23:13He hits into a double play against Whitlock, and that was the end of that.
23:17So, you know, the Yankees' bats were red hot to start the year.
23:21You know it's a long season, Donnie.
23:23It's going to go through moments like this.
23:24But confident enough that the Yankees' bats will figure it out here at some point and get back to scoring runs.
23:31But right now, there's no point looking at overs in their games.
23:36No.
23:36And by the way, the New York Mets, if we just go to another New York team here,
23:40one of the better teams in Major League Baseball, came into the series against the Rays flying high and mighty on top of the NL East here.
23:47Most wins, I should say, in Major League Baseball.
23:50They get swept by the Rays.
23:51And sometimes, like, we need case studies.
23:53There has to be something that goes into the Rays where every year, like, I don't know a single player on this team starting pitcher and or in the lineup.
23:59And they're always good.
24:00It looked like the season wasn't starting out all that well.
24:02Now, 39 and 32.
24:04Here come the Rays, always doing what they do.
24:07Sweeping the Mets on the road is the hottest team in Major League Baseball.
24:10Nine hits, nine runs yesterday.
24:12Shut the Mets out.
24:14The Rays, man.
24:15Can't kill this team.
24:16Yeah, I mean, the Mets, I think, were one of only three teams heading into yesterday that had not been swept yet in the season.
24:24And, well, boy, that ended rather quickly and embarrassing there.
24:29Canning got lit up by a lineup that knew him very well when he was with the Angels and had a lot of success against them.
24:37But credit to Tampa Bay.
24:39They've had to go through a lot playing in a minor league park of the Yankees in Tampa.
24:43The hitting wasn't quite there, but they got low back in that lineup there.
24:48The younger guys are really starting to hit.
24:51And the pitching has been phenomenal.
24:52The hallmark of the Rays is always what an amazing middle relief back into the bullpen.
24:58They don't need a guy to go seven, eight innings.
25:01They can mix and match guys all day long in that bullpen.
25:04And they're really starting to show up for them.
25:06Yeah, it's interesting to see, like, again, it's a long season.
25:10The ebbs and flows.
25:11You can be playing great baseball.
25:12Like the Mets were, lose three straight.
25:13The Phillies were playing great baseball.
25:15The Pirates handled them easily.
25:17Same thing with the Milwaukee Brewers.
25:18Then they bounced back, you know, in their homestand, five and one overall.
25:21It's just wacky to see on a day-to-day basis.
25:23But also, how many sweeps were in the forecast for this past weekend in Major League Baseball?
25:27Fun times here.
25:28And we're only midway through the month of June.
25:31Now, Mondays typically don't have the deepest card here, Joe.
25:34We have, what, three, six, seven total games on the card and some interesting series nonetheless.
25:39So, why don't we fly out to the West Coast here?
25:41Because the Dodgers are going to take on the Padres tonight.
25:44Cease versus Kasparais.
25:46And if we look at the line here, it's a minus 152 price overnight at the opening number.
25:50Today, we sit at minus 156 as a favorite for the Dodgers.
25:54The total of this game, listed at eight and a half.
25:56The Dodgers did play on Sunday night baseball.
25:59Last night came away with a victory.
26:01But the question tonight is not about who the Dodgers and is it going to be Kasparais or how long he's going to go.
26:06Shohei Ohtani expected to be the opener tonight for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
26:12How about them, Apples?
26:15He has not pitched since September of 2023, which also happens to be a couple of months before he signed that 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.
26:26Listen, who knows how long he's going to go.
26:29It's going to be a work in progress.
26:33But, you know, to me, this is all about it's great you're a two-way player.
26:37We don't have many of them.
26:39We never have them anymore.
26:41But it's not easy to all of a sudden.
26:44I got to be a, you know, I got to be a great hitter.
26:46And now I got to be a really great pitcher every fifth day as well.
26:49It might take a little time for Ohtani to adjust.
26:53In the meantime, the Padres, they looked like they were having a hard time over the last couple of weeks scoring some runs.
27:00They figured it out yesterday, but this is a tough spot for the Padres.
27:06But they also have a history of doing well against these Dodgers in Chez Ravine.
27:12So, should be an interesting game.
27:14I think it's a coin flip game at best here.
27:16But all the value will be on the Padres because everybody's going to run and bet Ohtani because he's pitching tonight.
27:22Yeah, I'll tell you, too.
27:23Dylan Cease was fantastic, Joe, in his last start.
27:25You're sort of waiting for him to, like, bounce back.
27:27Like, the ERA was a little bit high, but the XFIP has always been there because he's a big strikeout guy.
27:31Great last performance.
27:32You see if he can roll that over.
27:33But let me ask you this question.
27:35You know, outside the lines of the game, you know, will the Dodgers win?
27:37Will the Padres win?
27:38What's the goal for Chez Ravine?
27:40Because do you find it interesting where it's like he's a starting pitcher?
27:44We want to treat him as a starting pitcher, but let's get him as, like, an opener, which he's never done that before.
27:49Or does he turn into a closer this year?
27:52Is this just the start of he's going to pitch one inning and the next inning, it's two innings?
27:56He's like, what's the game plan for the Dodgers?
27:58And are you surprised that it's like, yeah, he's pitching, but he's the opener at this point?
28:03Yeah.
28:04Again, this is going to be a work in progress.
28:06I mean, he hasn't pitched since 2023, Donnie.
28:09I mean, this is as good and as talented as he is.
28:13That's asking a lot from him in order to be able to get there.
28:17So I think if Dave Robertson, I'm sure they've already discussed it.
28:21It's going to be pitch limit city for him from this point on.
28:25I think they figure if they start him now, by the time September rolls around, they should be able to get a couple of quality starts heading into the postseason from him.
28:35And that's in a short series.
28:37That's a dangerous thing.
28:39Yeah.
28:39And also how long is it?
28:40Because Kasparis is listed as a starter.
28:42I don't even know if that's actually correct at this point with obviously Otani going to open, but also from him as a perspective, is this just a bullpen game for the Dodgers?
28:49Last 30 days, he's had 16 total innings pitched, but actually has eight appearances in games here.
28:55So maybe a full game where it's the bullpen for the Dodgers going up against Dylan Cease.
28:59And you're getting, what, plus 130, plus 125 or so here as an underdog for the Padres.
29:05That total opened up at eight and a half.
29:07Some of the outlets listed at nine.
29:08So it should be interesting to watch it play out.
29:10And also, how do they handle Otani?
29:12Like, okay, he pitches the first inning, and then he's still the DH.
29:14Does he come out of that baseball game?
29:16And also, what are the overreactions, Joe?
29:18What are the overreactions?
29:19Otani pitches one inning, gives up three earned runs.
29:22What happens?
29:23No Jackson Merrill either in the concussion protocol.
29:26Got knocked out of that game against Arizona.
29:29So that's a big bang that the Padres lost here.
29:33Exactly.
29:33Maybe it's up to Cronenworth and the boys in that lineup to handle their business.
29:36More Major League Baseball, which includes Miami, South Beach, Philadelphia Phillies.
29:41Let's get after it next.
29:42More Major League Baseball on a Monday, as we just told you.
29:45Boy, late night, West Coast.
29:47What's going to happen?
29:47Ah, Shohei Otani is going to open up for the Dodgers and what that entails.
29:51Because we are going to have hot topics immediately once he enters that game and he finishes on the mound.
29:56And what he's actually going to do with the play.
29:58A couple of base knocks yesterday, too, in that victory for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
30:02But today is a new day.
30:03Many other Major League Baseball games, which includes the Philadelphia Phillies after a strong homestand and a bounce-back performance against the Toronto Blue Jays.
30:10Now head down to South Beach to take on the Miami Marlins.
30:13And you used to say to yourself, ooh, man, you want to play the Marlins, but you want to avoid Sandy Alcantara.
30:18Not necessarily the case anymore at this point.
30:19Now, 6.40 start tonight, 9.51, 9.52 on the rotation, Joe.
30:23Opened up as a slight favorite towards the Philadelphia Phillies.
30:26Give or take minus 1.25.
30:28That's actually lower.
30:28We're basically at a de facto pick-em live right now on the FanDuel Sportsbook.
30:32And a total listed at 8.5.
30:34The young pitcher, McAble, had a couple good starts in Major League Baseball.
30:37Roughed up a little bit in his last start.
30:39Maybe Sandy Alcantara can start rounding back in the form.
30:42No Bryce Harper once again expected in the lineup for the Phillies.
30:45How do we see this playing out?
30:46Unders?
30:47Sides?
30:48What do you think between the Phillies and the Marlins?
30:51Well, I mean, kind of crazy because you've got a Philadelphia team coming in off a sweep of what was the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays.
31:01And now you've got Miami who completed the sweep against the Nats yesterday.
31:05So both these teams are rolling right now.
31:09Finally starting to figure it out offensively.
31:11Still no Bryce Harper for the Philadelphia Phillies.
31:15But the kid that they brought up, this kid Otto Kemp, actually had a huge weekend series there against Toronto.
31:22And listen, Philadelphia at home has always been one bet, Donnie.
31:27You know this.
31:28Philadelphia on the road.
31:30That's another thing here.
31:32And it looks like Sandy's getting a little bit more comfortable as he pitches.
31:35I still don't trust the Miami Bats, but how can we bet anything other than an under in this game?
31:42Which is the only way I'd look at this game between these two teams right now.
31:46I'm with you on that.
31:47I am.
31:47Understand this, too.
31:48I love the Phillies.
31:49The Phillies cranked out 18 hits yesterday, Joe.
31:51Scored 11 runs.
31:52You love that.
31:53But sometimes you have to dive in a little bit deeper to that.
31:55The Phillies' power is really gone.
31:56I think it was one home run, maybe two doubles in that game.
31:58So 15 base knocks were singles, which, again, you will take that.
32:03But most of the times you get 18 hits in a game, you're looking at 16, 17, 18 runs because multiple extra base hits combined with walks and home runs.
32:11You really power surge.
32:12The Phillies will take this at any point.
32:13And you're right about Kemp.
32:14A lot of singles coming up here, which you'll take from that lineup, which was really dead.
32:18Six, seven, eight, and nine, giving you nothing in that Phillies lineup here for the majority of the season.
32:22And Kemp looks like he might be a player at that position.
32:25Something certainly to watch out for here.
32:27Let's move it over to the Bronx, New York today.
32:29Not a lot of great conditions.
32:30Maybe a little rain in the forecast, cooler temperatures.
32:32The Angels with Soriano on the mound, going to take on Clark Schmidt and the New York Yankees.
32:37957, 958 on the rotation.
32:38705 starts tonight.
32:40How about a favorite here?
32:40A minus 210 price for the Yankees at FanDuel overnight.
32:44Now it's shifted down a little bit to minus 196.
32:47Minus 210s, minus 205s, minus 190s.
32:49Also from other outlets here.
32:51A total listed at eight and a half.
32:52The Yankees, that's a little bit cold.
32:55Colder temperatures in the Bronx.
32:56Do they wake up today against the Angels?
32:59I don't know.
33:01You can't play $2 with the way this Yankees team is playing.
33:05I mean, Aaron Judge is coming off his worst series of the season.
33:11I mean, heading into Boston, I believe he was close to having a 400 average, right?
33:17And then all of a sudden, boom.
33:19He goes one for 10, one for 11.
33:22He strikes out nine.
33:24I mean, he's not even coming close to hitting the ball.
33:27Give credit to the pitchers of the Red Sox.
33:30I don't think the Angels pitchers are in that category.
33:33Maybe a little bit of home cooking.
33:35But now 18 for 55 in his past 15 games, he went one for 12 and scored four runs.
33:43But my goodness, if Judge doesn't hit, Yankees ain't scoring.
33:48And I'm not buying it at $2 here.
33:51I'd almost even look at a under in this game, too, at eight and a half.
33:56Woo, Trouty and the boys there.
33:58Taylor Ward, if you cannot hit, you must have quit, Joe Ranieri.
34:02Come on now.
34:02We need the Yankees bats to start waking up here.
34:04And it starts with Aaron Judge.
34:05But by the way, you and Carlos Stanton expected in that lineup sooner than later this week.
34:09So maybe adding an extra catapult in the middle of that offense here.
34:13Boston and Seattle.
34:14Giolito versus Gilbert today.
34:16961, 962 on the rotation.
34:18A 940 start out on the West Coast tonight.
34:21165, 170 at the opening number here at FanDuel, New Jersey.
34:24For Seattle's the favorite, we're now seeing as high as minus 188 live.
34:28And higher at other outlets around a minus 195.
34:31Look at that total, though.
34:32Opened up at seven and a half.
34:34You see it now in that graphic.
34:35We're down to seven.
34:36We are expecting a great pitching performance out of both teams.
34:39Or is it just, well, that ballpark's hard to churn up some runs in.
34:44Well, I mean, Giolito had a great outing during the week against, right, Tampa.
34:48I think last time he pitched.
34:51It's hit or miss with him.
34:52And Gilbert, I think, hasn't pitched since April when he was on the shelf here.
34:58So first, I guess, first start since late April.
35:03You never know what you're going to get from guys like that.
35:07So, and I have no idea what we're going to get from Boston now that Devers is gone here.
35:13I think the total is a little low, though.
35:15It's seven.
35:15It is.
35:16Might look to back and over in this one.
35:19Also, you take a look, too, at Lucas Giolito.
35:21Last 23 in a third innings pitch, Joe.
35:23Last five starts combined over the past month.
35:265.40 ERA.
35:284.63 XFIP number.
35:29Now, granted, sometimes you are saved a little bit by pitching in Seattle, but also balmy in Seattle, Joe.
35:3571 degrees at first pitch at night in Seattle.
35:37I mean, what is the time for a beach party up there?
35:39You look at the lineup.
35:41Doesn't look all that great from Seattle's perspective going up against right-handed pitching over the past month.
35:44But there's always my guy Cal Rowley in the middle of that lineup, Joe.
35:47Did you know his last 76 at-bats against right-handed pitching?
35:50About a 415 ISO and a 421 weighted on-base percentage.
35:54It feels like it's a new Red Sox team, right?
35:57Like, it's only one player that left, and it's Raphael Devers.
36:00Not as if, like, Babe Ruth left the team.
36:02It's like, ah, what are we going to do the rest of the season?
36:04But now it's up to some of these young batters to really step up, and maybe you can do that tonight.
36:08But also, the questions of, Gilbert's one of their aces.
36:11Coming back into the fold, this is what we waited for.
36:13The young, talented pitching staff to time up with the bats here for Seattle.
36:16Maybe they get on a run starting tonight with the healthy pitchers back.
36:21Yeah, again, Logan Gilbert was, he looked great in spring training coming out.
36:26He had that, you know, dead arm that happened.
36:29But he is, without a doubt, one of the better front-line starters in the American League.
36:34They need him, Seattle.
36:35Plus, they're coming off a three-game sweep of the Guardians this weekend, where the bats
36:40have actually come alive again.
36:42So, yeah, it's, if Boston comes out and smacks Seattle, then we know exactly why they traded
36:49Devers.
36:50Yeah, we'll take a look at a few more Major League Baseball games after the break here.
36:53But look at this lineup, not something you expected heading into the season.
36:56Durant, Toro, Norvayas, Anthony, Story, Mayer, Campbell, Hamilton, Rapiella.
37:00What?
37:01What lineup is that?
37:04Major League Baseball.
37:05Hey, man, seven games on the card today.
37:07Otani getting the start as the opener out there in Los Angeles.
37:10A lot of interesting things to take a look at, which includes, let's just an Astros starting
37:14to surge a little bit.
37:15First place out there in the AL West.
37:17Today, they're going to take on the Athletics in Sacramento, a place where all hitters like
37:21to go.
37:22It's going to be McCullers on the mound has had a pretty decent bounce back season so
37:25far, at least over the past 30 days, going up against JP Sears, 963, 964 on the rotation
37:30at 10 o'clock starts tonight.
37:32Look at that total, Joe.
37:33Love to see it.
37:34Ten and a half runs.
37:36Coors Field, West Coast, West Coast edition here.
37:38And a favorite here for Houston, around a minus 156 price.
37:42Other outlets as high as a minus 165.
37:44McCullers versus Sears.
37:46Houston, I think those bats probably rise up tonight against Sears.
37:49What are you thinking tonight?
37:51A day better.
37:52I mean, a great sweep of Minnesota, but my goodness, let's be realistic.
37:583-2 on Saturday, 2-1 yesterday.
38:01It's not like we're getting a ton of offense here from Houston.
38:05McCullers is a guy that is getting better and better after each start.
38:11You know, he had that one terrible start there, kind of skewed the numbers up a little bit,
38:15but he has gotten better and better every time he has gone to the mound here.
38:20And Sears, I mean, listen, he's still one of the better lefties for the athletics.
38:27Hard to sweat an under in this spot here, but my goodness,
38:31do we trust the Houston bats to do enough to get this thing up and over here, Donnie?
38:35We should, but by the way, J.P. Sears here with an 8.75 ERA over the past 30 days.
38:41Maybe just that environment, the heat and humidity out there in Sacramento,
38:44small minor league ballpark here, that ball's going to travel.
38:47By the way, put that graphic back up on the screen, Joe.
38:49I want to test you with something right now.
38:51Now, if I were to tell you that you took, like, hours and hours to come up with a,
38:56like, a tagline for the game, what do you think about out west as the tagline on that one?
39:00Does that take a long time to think about?
39:02Like, was that a hard one for this game?
39:04That is impressive.
39:06Yeah, that's actually impressive.
39:08Well done.
39:09Well done.
39:11I had to bring that one back up here.
39:12Maybe they charged by the word for these graphics.
39:14I don't know.
39:15That might be it.
39:16Is that Spielberg?
39:16Who wrote that?
39:17You know what I mean?
39:18See the Sondheim, whoever.
39:20Let me, somebody put that bad boy up there at that point, out west.
39:22How about Baltimore and Tampa?
39:24Not out west.
39:25We're down in Tampa, who I love.
39:26The heat and humidity getting into that ballpark, but this game,
39:29only an eight and a half as a total from the opening line of nine, I should say.
39:35A favorite here.
39:35Minus 126 is overnight.
39:37Where did the facto pick them now?
39:38You see the graphic at 122.
39:39It's even less than that now.
39:41Eflin versus Pepeo.
39:42Tampa comes in hot here.
39:44Baltimore is actually playing better baseball,
39:46which there's nowhere to go but up from how you started your season.
39:49735 starts tonight.
39:50What are we thinking?
39:51Can we get runs down in Tampa in this all-important divisional duel?
39:56You know, Baltimore, that lineup has finally gotten healthy.
40:01They're starting to hit.
40:02And more importantly, they're actually, the bullpen is starting to settle down
40:07and be actually a pretty good force for Baltimore here.
40:11It's kind of hard to look at an opening number of nine
40:14and see the total drop down to eight and a half here.
40:17But it's also hard not to look at Baltimore right now
40:21and how the confidence that they're playing with.
40:24So, wouldn't shock me if Tampa loses the first game in this series tonight,
40:28but I'd be looking to play them again tomorrow night at home here.
40:32I would lean towards Baltimore in this one.
40:35Yeah, both similar ex-fifths between both these pitchers here.
40:37Last 30 days, Zach Eflin is at a 3.82.
40:40You take a look here at Pepeo at a 3.66.
40:42We'll see if the bats can wake up.
40:43And we always love it.
40:44We talked about that A's atmosphere.
40:46Sometimes it's not about the pitchers.
40:47It's just about how hot it is inside of that ballpark.
40:50Same thing here down in Tampa.
40:51Love to see that.
40:52One more game on the card tonight.
40:53We'll hit Colorado and Washington.
40:55Palmquist, get ready for this one, Joe.
40:57His last 18 innings pitch, his ERA is at a 7.
41:00His ex-fifth, 6.20.
41:02Uh-oh, taking on Jake Urban here of the Nationals.
41:05How about this?
41:05The Nationals, a heavy favorite at minus 188
41:09as it currently sits here at the FanDuel Sportsbook.
41:12Some outlets closer to minus 200 for the Washington Nationals.
41:16It's fresh off Colorado yesterday, pasting the Atlanta Braves, Joe.
41:19Yeah, but in the Nationals, I mean, in Palmquist's defense,
41:24he is not pitched to that ERA.
41:27He hasn't faced the Nationals lineup here.
41:30They can't hit water if they fell out of a boat right now here.
41:33So hard.
41:34Runs are going to be hard to come by in this game.
41:37Nine is a pretty lofty expectation here for the Nats and the Rockies.
41:42I'd only look at the under in this spot.
41:44Yeah, take a look, too, at Palmquist.
41:46His last 89 batters, Joe, that he's faced.
41:48How about a 282 ISO and a weighted-on-base percentage of 416?
41:52Doesn't strike out many batters.
41:53Lefties and righties hammering here.
41:55Looking at the Washington lineup, but having said that,
41:57he's still a left-handed pitcher, which does give some teams problems,
41:59and lefties have given the Washington Nationals problems.
42:02Outside of Alex Call and Ahmad Rosario,
42:05everybody else really below the belt here going up against it.
42:07And then you take a look at the Colorado batters,
42:09which you always have to take with a grain of salt.
42:11How do they hit in Colorado as opposed to Joe what?
42:13How do they hit outside of Colorado?
42:1572 degrees in the nation's capital.
42:16It's not a great game overall for that.
42:19It is what it is.
42:20That's baseball.
42:20Hour number three.
42:22Up next is Joe and Don.
