More than a hundred family and community members of Kumanjayi White are expected to travel from Yuendumu to Alice Springs today for another vigil in memory of the Warlpiri man who died in police custody last month.
00:00This will be the third vigil in memory of Koemanjai White held here in Alice Springs and around 150 members of the Yundamu community and loved ones of Koemanjai White are expected to travel from Yundamu here to Alice Springs for today's gathering.
00:19It's around a 350 kilometre trip from Yundamu into town. Family members are expected to gather here on the court lawns from around 10 o'clock this morning. They'll then take part in a sorry march down to the local Coles where Koemanjai White died on the 27th of May when he was restrained by two off-duty or plainclothed police officers at the local supermarket.
00:45The group is then expected to come back here to the court lawns where we'll hear speeches from members of Koemanjai White's family who will be addressing the crowds.
00:56We have heard from members of his family previously who have addressed other vigils that have been held around the country speaking of their pain and grief at the loss of this 24-year-old Wolperi man.
01:09There have been calls for independent inquiries into deaths in custody. Those have been backed not only by family and community members of Koemanjai White but also from politicians both locally and federally.
01:23We heard this morning from Independent Senator Lydia Thorpe who spoke about the pain and grief of deaths in custody. Take a listen.
01:30It's just ongoing trauma and pain and loss and fear. With so many deaths in custody, almost 600 deaths in custody that we know of, it's a question in everyone's mind of when will this end?
