A man has died in police custody after being restrained by two officers in Alice Springs. Major crime investigators are travelling to the town to investigate the death of the 24-year-old Aboriginal man. According to police the man became unconscious while being restrained by plain clothed officers following a confrontation with private security guards. The man stopped breathing and CPR was started. He was declared dead on arrival at Alice Springs hospital.

00:00At about 1.10pm this afternoon, there was a report of an incident that occurred in the
00:09Coles supermarket in Alice Springs. The incident involved a person who was placing items down
00:17the front of their clothing who was confronted by security guards. There was an altercation
00:21that occurred as a consequence of that confrontation. One of the security guards was assaulted and
00:28there were two police officers who were in plain clothes at the time in the supermarket
00:34who rendered assistance to the security guards. The male behaved rather aggressively and was
00:42placed onto the ground by those police officers. He was later identified as losing consciousness.
00:53The police were assisted by other general duties police who arrived. St John's Ambulance
00:58also arrived at the location and the male was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital. The
01:05male has been identified, we believe, to be a 24-year-old Aboriginal male from Alice Springs.
01:12Whilst at the Alice Springs Hospital he underwent critical care but unfortunately succumbed and
01:18passed away at 2.20pm this afternoon. As a consequence of that notification that this person had passed
01:26away. The Northern Territory Police protocol is to identify this matter as a death in custody.
01:33As a consequence a senior commissioned officer is being placed in charge of this investigation.
01:39We have had detectives involved in the preliminary investigative process and major crime investigators
01:47are flying to Alice Springs this afternoon to assist with the evidence collection in relation to this matter.
01:53This matter will be investigated and reported on on behalf of the coroner and the Northern Territory
02:00pathologist is travelling to Alice Springs tomorrow and will conduct an autopsy in relation to the matter.
