00:00Born into a conservative family, Carol Lulifum was the very image of the girl next door, demure,
00:09studious and dutiful until she defied expectations. At just 20 years old, she secretly applied to
00:17join the Army's first batch of female cadets, hiding it from her family, a bold move that would
00:23eventually reshape the role of women in Malaysia's armed forces. Reversing her surname Lou and
00:30transforming it into 007, Carol embraced the symbol not as a frivolous nickname, but as
00:36a reminder of the precision and resourcefulness required in her secret military role.
00:43While James Bond's world walled around glitzy casinos and high-speed chases, Carol's missions
00:49targeted communist guerrillas in the 1970s and 80s. Barred from frontlines, she worked
00:55behind the scenes to gather, analyze and interpret intelligence on the Communist Party of Malaya,
01:01working closely with police and military officers. This is where her fluency in multiple languages
01:08enable her to cultivate informants within Chinese-speaking communities, including those that sometimes
01:13harbored CPM sympathizers.
01:17On top of this, one of Carol's many achievements was becoming the first female officer and first
01:22intelligence officer to serve in the Armed Forces Defense Operations Room, where she supported
01:27Malbec 7 in Bosnia and Herzegovina with real-time intelligence during UN peacekeeping missions.
01:35Promoted from major in the early 1990s to lefton colonel in 2000, Carol later commanded an
01:41intelligence detachment in the Ministry of Defense before retiring in 2008 after 31 years
01:47of trailblazing service.
