00:00You ready for rock bottom, Keith?
00:02Oh, we're there.
00:03Yeah, I'm ready.
00:04Yeah, I have to.
00:05I have no other choice.
00:05This has to be it, right?
00:07Well, yes.
00:08But we said that before.
00:10No.
00:10Last night was rock bottom.
00:11Five games under 500.
00:13We've said probably rock bottom, but it could get lower.
00:16This has to be it.
00:17The comedy of errors.
00:19Like, literal errors, I think.
00:21And yet another one-run loss.
00:23I think you combine the two.
00:24Oh, by the way, the Angels aren't good.
00:26It's another bad team.
00:27And they've played, like, the worst or the best schedule you could face.
00:31Outside of Mike Trout, I don't know hardly.
00:33Kenley Jansen, I guess, who was here.
00:35I don't know hardly anybody on that team.
00:37They don't even feel like real names and real players.
00:39I don't even know those guys.
00:40They're a horrible team.
00:41And they lost to them in another one-run game.
00:43Travis, how do you say his last name?
00:46Darnell?
00:47Oh, yes.
00:47He was supposed to be, like, a stud.
00:49I've heard of him.
00:5016 years ago.
00:51I was shocked that it was still him.
00:52I thought you were talking about Noah Shanwell.
00:55No, no, no.
00:56I'm not talking about him.
00:56Zach Netto.
00:57Yeah, yeah.
00:57No, that was just another wild loss.
01:00Little was a highly-tied prospect.
01:02Was he?
01:02Yeah, he was.
01:03And he was poor.
01:04In your face, yo.
01:05In your face.
01:05There's baseball Nick from the clouds.
01:07Don't mess with us.
01:08Don't throw facts in our face, Nick.
01:09No, but it's not a good team.
01:10So even with these back-to-back wins, the Angels are four games under 500.
01:13That's a go-nowhere team.
01:14They stink.
01:15Yeah, yeah.
01:15You stink.
01:16And the manager after the game, to me, is the headline.
01:20And when I say it's rock bottom, they might go lower in the standings.
01:22Oh, probably.
01:23Oh, for sure.
01:24In fact, I would probably wager on it.
01:26But the way the manager was acting after the game, to me, is why I say it was rock bottom.
01:33It's Jones and Keefe.
01:34We are live today in the Ford Clubhouse Fenway studio at Fenway, taking you up to, I guess,
01:40what could have been a rubber game.
01:41But now he's just going for a sweep.
01:43You're avoiding the sweep.
01:44You are.
01:44You can do all you can to avoid the sweep.
01:46Yeah, yeah.
01:46It's over.
01:47You keep losing these one-run games.
01:49You won't get rubber games that way.
01:50Well, Giolito Revenge Game.
01:52You got to factor that in.
01:53One of his former clubs.
01:54I had not.
01:54Good point.
01:55Giolito Revenge Game probably hates the Angels.
01:57We're brought to you by your New England Ford dealers.
01:59You can hurry in to get employee pricing on the full lineup of vehicles.
02:03Ford from America for America.
02:06You can jump in today.
02:07617-779-7937.
02:09We'll be talking about this pretty much all day long.
02:12We will talk to Robert Ory.
02:14Yes.
02:14Got a finals preview.
02:15I love Robert Ory.
02:16We had him on a few months ago.
02:17Some good NBA stories, too.
02:19Like, last time we had him on, he hates Danny Ainge.
02:22Yes.
02:23Real, real good dirt on Danny Ainge.
02:26And so we'll get some NBA stories, some NBA thoughts,
02:29some Celtics off-season thoughts out of Robert Ory around 1215.
02:34We also have a Would You Rather Wednesday coming your way at 1130.
02:37You can interact Twitter and Instagram at Jones and Keith.
02:41You can also go to our personal Twitter pages, at Keith21, at JonesWE.
02:46DMs are open, if you know what I mean.
02:48If it wasn't such a bad Red Sox loss last night, Keith,
02:51I would start with whatever the hell's going on on this keyboard, which,
02:54yeah, that's quite a mess.
02:55If you go to your Twitter, you can see what happened there.
02:57It's, uh, I don't know.
02:59Now, after a loss, I don't get it.
03:01After a win, I understand.
03:03After a loss, I don't really understand.
03:05I don't get it.
03:05Let me just tell you, if you haven't seen yet,
03:07it's what my keyboard will look like when Roman Anthony finally gets called up.
03:11Well, keep waiting.
03:12But in the meantime, it's a rough scene over here.
03:15You can interact on Twitch at twitch.tv slash bostonweei.
03:19Also, chat there.
03:21Always a healthy chat on Twitch and on YouTube.
03:23Just subscribe to weei.
03:26Cora seems fed up, Keith.
03:29Yeah, well, fed up's one way of putting it.
03:32Do you think he's, I think he's got like a foot out the door.
03:35That's what it is.
03:35Like, I think it's, it's some, there's like frustration with like wanting to fix it and
03:41like, Hey, Hey, we could turn it around, but like, this is, this is bad.
03:45Or even like rock bottom as you, as you let off with this feels almost like, yeah, like
03:51I do like, I think almost like wants to be gone.
03:53Like in a bizarre twist that you just signed this extension.
03:56The season's not off to the best start.
03:58You, you liked your team in cave.
04:00You're talking about the expectations.
04:01You got your favorite player in the world.
04:03And Alex Bregman, I know he's hurt, but all this stuff started even before he got hurt.
04:07And now you're like finally kind of pointing the finger to yourself, but it's almost as
04:12as if to say like, nah, I think he wants to be done.
04:15So he wants out.
04:16I wouldn't rule it out.
04:17He sounds like a guy who wants to be fired.
04:19And I'll tell you the react.
04:21I got in the comments last night, Keith.
04:23Oh, good stuff in there.
04:24Nessun tweeted out this video and I got in the comments.
04:27Not only does Cora maybe want to get fired.
04:29The people want it.
04:30People want them out.
04:30People have turned on them.
04:32They were already turning on them.
04:34He did not have as high of an approval rating as I expected him, even at the start of the
04:39year.
04:39Yeah.
04:40And then as things kind of, they didn't get out of the way.
04:42The whole Devers thing turned people against them a little bit.
04:45And then obviously the really, really slow start and you know, some of the decisions
04:49he's made on the field.
04:50Some, yeah, it's just, it's, it's an ugly scene.
04:52They're a six and 17 in one run games.
04:56Yeah.
04:56That's half their losses.
04:57You think that's an homage to Boston.
04:58I was, I was kind of thinking it was an homage to Boston.
05:00Yeah.
05:00Boston area code.
05:01Maybe no more one run games guys.
05:03No, no, no, no, no.
05:03Leave it like that.
05:04This is what it's going to be, but they're now six and 17 in one run games.
05:08Cora's asked directly about this after the game.
05:11Uh, here's what he had to say about the Red Sox and their struggles in all of these close
05:15losses, including last night.
05:17How much are these close losses, you know, eating at you and frustrating?
05:22I mean, we keep making the same mistakes.
05:25We're not getting better.
05:26At one point it has to be on me, I guess.
05:28Right.
05:29I'm the, I'm the manager.
05:30So, you know, I got to keep pushing them to be better.
05:32They're not getting better.
05:33They're not, you know, we keep making the same mistakes, same mistakes.
05:36You know, I'll be very honest about it, very open about it, you know, like, you know, you
05:45get frustrated, but at one point it's like, okay, what are we going to do?
05:48What's going to change?
05:48You know, because we keep doing the same thing, same thing.
05:51We can keep talking about, um, one run losses.
05:54They're what, 17, 18, whatever it is, you know, and it's the same thing, same thing.
05:58So, I mean, um, is it effort, preparation, like Duke said, uh, attention to detail, you
06:06know, I have no idea now, you know, I watched that game, I was like, wow, you know, this
06:11is real, you know, I mean, it's frustrating.
06:17It's frustrating.
06:18It sure is.
06:18I like how he ticks through all these different things.
06:21Is it preparation?
06:22Is it all frustration?
06:23All this stuff.
06:24It's like, that's all those things.
06:25He's like, is it me?
06:26I guess.
06:26Well, do you want to look at me?
06:28Maybe.
06:28I think that was a weaselly little comment because a lot of people might hear that or even
06:34some of the headlines today.
06:34It's like, well, Alex Cora puts it on him.
06:37Not really.
06:37He said, at some point, it has to be on me.
06:40No, we're there.
06:41Well, I think we've been there.
06:42We've been there.
06:42No, no, no.
06:43But now it's clear.
06:44I don't know.
06:44I mean, I guess, I guess I'll wear some of these one run losses.
06:47It's like, I don't really think he put it on himself, but I agree with you.
06:51He sounds like a guy who knows he's, he's not going to be here much longer.
06:54Sorry to disappoint you.
06:56And maybe he doesn't want to be here much longer.
06:58No, I know.
06:59He probably doesn't because he'd get, he'd get that huge contract to go do nothing, go do TV,
07:03go do something else.
07:04So he'd be fine.
07:06I think what you have to do is to really punish him.
07:09You have to make him manage this team.
07:10You got to like, that's the, that's the biggest punishment that you could be given right now.
07:13Yeah.
07:13So you're not fired.
07:14Like we need, we need you.
07:16You're here the rest of the, you're not going anywhere.
07:17You're managing all these games unless you have a graduation coming up, which we will let
07:21you do.
07:21By the way, I was thinking about that too.
07:23The Red Sox are five games under 500, but Alex Cora is seven games under 500.
07:30Great point.
07:30It's a great point.
07:31He got thrown out in the first inning right after the other game, right?
07:35Yeah.
07:35The Red Sox are much better without him this year.
07:37That's been proven.
07:37No, but so I'm nothing if not consistent Jones.
07:40And I've, I've always maintained the baseball manager, not the most important position, not
07:46the most important coach, like in all the four majors, right?
07:48Like, I don't think they deserve a ton of credit when they win.
07:52I don't think they necessarily deserve a ton of blame when they lose.
07:56However, whatever you think a manager does in your mind, whatever you think, and Craig
08:01Breslow was on with the Greg Hill show last week, talking about what he thinks a manager
08:05does, whatever in your mind, is it manage the players?
08:08Is it manage the personalities?
08:10Is it pitching changes?
08:11Is it getting the most out of young players?
08:14Is it fundamentals?
08:15Is it base running?
08:15Take all the stuff.
08:17Does he do any of it well right now?
08:19No, no, none of it.
08:20No.
08:21So it doesn't matter where you're coming at it from, where whatever you think a manager
08:24does, and maybe you think they're even more important than I do.
08:27He's doing a bad job at that.
08:28The win losses, the win losses are bad.
08:31So that's the easiest thing to point to like, oh, you're losing a lot of games, but like what
08:35player is having a really good year where you could point to him and say, well, I don't
08:40know if you're getting this year, if he doesn't have Alex Cora, like that was something
08:43we used to say five years ago about like Bogarts and Devers, maybe even Mookie Betts in 2018.
08:49You're like, hey, maybe this, maybe this was Cora, but now we're seeing that 2018 was
08:55the anomaly.
08:552018 was wagon of a team.
08:58Talent was so good.
09:00He didn't get in the way and they rolled since then.
09:04They've made the playoffs once and, you know, he doesn't even have to take the losses from
09:092020 because he got kicked out of baseball.
09:11So, you know, he seems like a great guy and everything.
09:14He's good with the media, but right now he is a bad manager.
09:17Yeah.
09:18The teams quit on him and he may have quit.
09:20I was going to say, flip it.
09:21It's amazing.
09:22Why do you take the extension?
09:23I don't know.
09:24It seems like he doesn't even want to be here.
09:25A lot of money.
09:26So why, why take the extension?
09:28But people, job security, people told me he would get a job like this anywhere.
09:32It seems to be lining up for him.
09:34And I was always skeptical of that, Keith.
09:36Yeah.
09:36It seems like that would not have been the case.
09:38Because A, the Yankees will hire him.
09:40The Dodgers will hire him.
09:41The Phillies are, none of those jobs ever even open.
09:44None of them ever even open.
09:45Just fine.
09:46So right.
09:47Dodgers are winning the World Series.
09:48You know, Yankees are going on deep runs in the postseason.
09:51Like, no, none of those jobs even open.
09:53Number one.
09:54And number two, I don't think the track record's that great.
09:56I've said this before.
09:57He's basically John Farrell.
09:59And I've been saying this for years now.
10:01Recently, worse.
10:02Yeah.
10:03So the numbers, you know, people have been updating the numbers after every loss.
10:06I think his overall win-loss percentage is worse than Farrell.
10:09He's made the playoffs less than Farrell.
10:10Yeah.
10:11He's won the same amount of World Series.
10:13People forget this about 2021.
10:15I give him credit for the way he managed in the playoffs and got to the ALCS.
10:18That team backed in ass backwards on the final weekend of the year.
10:22Oh, yeah.
10:22They backed their way into the playoffs.
10:23I barely made the playoffs that year.
10:25Now, once they got there, they went on a run.
10:27It was lightning in a bottle for a round and a half.
10:29And they were a fun watch.
10:30And the crowd was insane.
10:32And the ballpark was packed and everything else.
10:33He's made the playoffs twice.
10:35He won the World Series in year one.
10:37And I maintain the same thing I would say about Farrell winning in 2013.
10:41That was as much about the manager before as it was about the manager who was there.
10:46The Red Sox won in 2013 in spite of Bobby Valentine the year before.
10:50Yeah, right.
10:51It didn't really matter who was there.
10:53It just happened to be John Farrell.
10:55But they were done with Valentine and they needed a professional manager and they got one.
10:59Same thing.
11:00Flash forward five years later to Farrell.
11:03You were sick of him, Keefe.
11:04The team was sick of him.
11:05They brought in Alex Cora and it was as much about who they kicked out as it was about who replaced him.
11:11And so, to me, that's now where you're at with Cora.
11:14Oh, I know what you're saying.
11:14You fire this guy, the next guy, they may come through World Series.
11:172026.
11:18Done with Cora.
11:19World Series back on.
11:19It was like every team that fired Buck Showalter.
11:21100%.
11:22The players look done with him and he looks done with them.
11:25And so, I'm not saying they're firing him today, although I'm starting to wonder based on his sad sack act last night.
11:31That was sad, but nobody's feeling bad for him.
11:33It didn't have, I think, whatever the intention that it was, I don't think he got the result that he wanted.
11:39No.
11:40So, I'm starting to wonder if it's right around the corner, but whenever they fire this guy, they'll probably get a pop because the team's done with him.
11:46Just like the team was done with John Farrell, just like they were done with Bobby Valentine, they're done with this guy.
11:52So, here's the thing, though.
11:53Not to get too baseball nerdy, but if they fire Alex Cora, is their approach at the plate and is their approach on the mound the same thing?
12:01Probably.
12:01Like, are they not throwing fastballs, or are they trying to hit the ball in the air?
12:05That's an organizational thing.
12:06Right, right.
12:06But it's about connecting with players.
12:08No, I know.
12:08And that's a miss.
12:09Cora is not doing, that's what Cora is supposed to be good at.
12:11Yeah.
12:12He's not doing that, so you hope Ramon Vazquez does.
12:15Or Veritek?
12:16You could go to Veritek.
12:17You could go to Jason Veritek?
12:18Fine.
12:18The, hey, guess what day it is, guy?
12:20I'm telling you, nobody watched the clubhouse.
12:22That was his thing.
12:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:23That was his thing.
12:24He's like, oh, you know it's guacamole day?
12:25National Cupcake Day?
12:26Yeah, he's that guy.
12:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:27It's good to have that guy in the group, I guess.
12:29So, I'd be okay with Veritek.
12:31I'd be okay with Ramon Vazquez.
12:32You want to call up Chad Tracy from AAA?
12:35Sure.
12:36Call him up.
12:36He's coaching his tail off.
12:40Actually, ask Roman Anthony who he wants.
12:41Ask Roman if he likes Chad Tracy.
12:42If he likes him, great.
12:43If he doesn't, keep him down there.
12:45So, but whatever.
12:45My point is, I don't really care who's in.
12:47It didn't really matter who replaced Bobby Valentine.
12:49It didn't really matter who replaced John.
12:51Are you doing that right now, or are you waiting?
12:52Keith, when we fixed the Red Sox last week, I would have done it last week.
12:55It hasn't gotten better.
12:55I never would have given him the extension.
12:57They've lost 8 of 10.
12:59I'm giving him the, what did I say?
13:01The all-star break?
13:01I got a month.
13:02It's one month.
13:03Too long.
13:03And then maybe, it might be too long.
13:05What's their record of one-run games going to be by then?
13:08Oh, my God.
13:097 and 23?
13:11I'll give them one win.
13:11Yeah, one more.
13:12They'll win one.
13:13They'll fuck into it.
13:14They'll sneak one out.
13:15No, and I think what's been a little bit underplayed, too, is not only are they a bad baseball team,
13:20they have played all other bad baseball teams.
13:22Like, most of their schedule, including the team that they're about to get swept by, are also below 500.
13:28Like, just these horrible teams that you face, like the White Sox, and you can't win those series,
13:34or you can't even sweep them when given an opportunity.
13:36So, they're a mess.
13:37They've lost 8 of 10.
13:39And so, I think you had Cora fired back last week when they were probably a game under 500.
13:45So, now fast forward, they're five games under.
13:48You know, and one of their two wins over the last 10 games was because Garrett Crochet threw an absolute gem.
13:55Like, so, that's the thing, is you're wasting a Cy Young season from Garrett Crochet.
13:59You have a shot every five days.
14:01Oh, yeah.
14:01The other four, I don't really like your chances.
14:03No.
14:04What about today, though?
14:05Don't like him.
14:05Giolito?
14:06Former team, though.
14:08Revenge game.
14:09You bring up a good point about that.
14:10He wasn't bad last time.
14:11His last two starts, pretty good.
14:13No, that just tells me he's due for a bad one.
14:15I mean, you might be right.
14:16So, what bothered you most about the Red Sox last night, Keith, in the specific game?
14:20And you guys can weigh in on this.
14:216-1-7, 7-7-9, 7-9-3-7.
14:23I have five items on my list.
14:24You have five?
14:25I have five from last night's game.
14:27You tell me which one bothered you the most.
14:28Okay.
14:29Personally, I think I have them in the order.
14:31They didn't bunt in the 10th inning, which Lou was a defense.
14:36On TV, he was defending the strategies like, no, no, no.
14:40You play for the win.
14:42It's a one-run game.
14:43You were lucky to get out of the top of the 10th, which we'll get to in a moment.
14:46Oh, yeah.
14:46But I would have played for the tie there.
14:49They didn't.
14:49They played for the win.
14:50They don't advance the runner.
14:52They lose in extras.
14:53So, no bunt in the 10th.
14:54Yep.
14:54That's good.
14:55They don't go home in the top half of the 10th.
14:58Abraham Torrell goes for the double play.
15:00They were at double play depth.
15:01I know Wiggy wants the infield in.
15:02The infield was not in.
15:04They were at double play depth.
15:05They go for the double play.
15:06They concede the run.
15:07That bothered me.
15:09I thought it was wild.
15:11David Hamilton, he's in there for his speed.
15:13Speed guy.
15:14He was tagging up at second base.
15:15He didn't advance on what looked like a ball that was deep enough to center field to third
15:19to get himself in scoring position or get himself a base away in the ninth inning for
15:23a potential walk-off win.
15:25He didn't advance there.
15:26On top of that, Red Sox make three more errors last night.
15:29They lead Major League Baseball with 53 errors.
15:31That's two more than Colorado.
15:33Colorado.
15:33Who is the worst team maybe in the history of baseball since the 1900s.
15:37There were a couple teams in the 1800s that were statistically worse.
15:40Off to the worst start since the Kansas City Union.
15:43Yeah.
15:43And the Cincinnati Red Stockings.
15:45Right from the 1870s.
15:46In Reconstruction America.
15:48Right, right, right.
15:48They made three more errors last night.
15:50They lead the bigs.
15:51And another guy chucked out on the bases.
15:53Abraham Toro thrown out by a million miles at home in the second or third inning, whatever
15:57it was.
15:58That's my list.
15:58What bothered you the most?
15:59The errors.
16:00Just because it felt like overall they had kind of put that a little bit behind them.
16:04They were leading the league early and they were running away from it.
16:08And even Bregman, who was one of their few good players, was part of the problem.
16:11He was just, he had a bunch of errors early, but so did everybody.
16:14And it was every night we were talking about more defensive miscues.
16:19And in this game, like you're losing all these one run games.
16:23You're losing all these extra inning games.
16:25You think maybe the extra several outs that you're giving the other team is playing a factor
16:30in that?
16:30Perhaps.
16:30And it also just looks super JV.
16:33Like when you have a major league club just throwing the ball all over the place, missing
16:37cutoff guys, chucking it to the backstop.
16:39It just looks bad.
16:41Right.
16:41And that's even coming from one of your better defenders in the Raffaella era.
16:44Raffaella is missing the cutoff, man.
16:46But like, and then Campbell has an error and you're thinking to yourself, Campbell's didn't
16:49come back to bite him.
16:50No, no, that one didn't.
16:51That was brutal though.
16:52But it looked bad.
16:54And then you're just thinking back to, all right, there's, they're being so safe, quote
16:58unquote, safe with Roman Anthony.
17:00And yet Campbell's up here.
17:02Day one has a little bit of success early has cooled way.
17:06I did have a hit last night, but cools way off.
17:08What's he hitting now?
17:09He's 24 and can't field.
17:11Yeah.
17:12And they're like, yeah, we can't get Anthony up here, but it's fine that we rushed this
17:15guy.
17:16So, but you have him playing the outfield.
17:18You haven't played second and you had him taking grounders at first until you realize
17:21we're not doing that.
17:22And I'm not saying, you know, he makes every play if you just leave him at second, but
17:26I kind of feel like it helps.
17:28I kind of feel like if that's all he's doing, right?
17:30You're so scared to move Devers to different places.
17:32You're so scared to do that to other players.
17:34If Christian Campbell's just a second baseman from April 1st on, I don't know, maybe some
17:39of the more routine plays look routine for him.
17:41So I'm most bothered by the two at the top of my list.
17:44Like you can let the manager off the hook, I guess, for the errors, like 53 of them,
17:48somewhere the manager has got to be on the list.
17:50He was complaining, he's like, our PFP is terrible and this and that.
17:53It's like, let's bring trainings for, that's what you're supposed to do.
17:56So you're the guiding hand.
17:57It bothers me.
17:58Toro getting thrown out on the bases and that's repetitive.
18:01That bothers me.
18:02Hamilton not advancing bothers me.
18:03But like all of those, I'd probably put more individually on the players than the manager.
18:08Not bunting.
18:09That's the manager.
18:11That's the manager thing.
18:11And having the infield at double play depth and not going for the play at home.
18:15I guess you can put that on Toro.
18:17He's not familiar with playing third, he could have still come home and still gotten a double
18:20play.
18:21Those ones bother me because they feel more like Cora's philosophy.
18:24He feels checked out.
18:25The team feels checked out on him.
18:27How are we feeling about the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for where they're at?
18:31How are we feeling about the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who do we blame for the Boston Red Sox and who
