00:00:00New England Patriots in their first ever meeting for Bill Parcells and his Patriots.
00:00:05Last week's 31-0 win over Arizona has provided a major lift.
00:00:09Today, Parcells will be facing his one-time assistant former head coach of Boston College,
00:00:15Tom Coughlin.
00:00:16Coughlin and his Jaguars hoping to recapture the form that saw them beat Pittsburgh on
00:00:21opening day four weeks ago.
00:00:24Hi, everybody.
00:00:25I'm Marv Alvin, along with Sam Weiss.
00:00:26Sam, there are several common threads running through today's game.
00:00:30The long-time relationship between the two head coaches and the quarterbacks.
00:00:34Mark Brunel, who played at the University of Washington group.
00:00:38Bledsoe played collegiately at Washington State.
00:00:40And Bledsoe comes off a strong game last week against the Cardinals.
00:00:44And off a good offseason of rehabilitating that left shoulder, a new quarterback coach in
00:00:48Chris Palmer, a new number one draft pick in Terry Glenn.
00:00:51And last week, he spread the ball around to six different receivers.
00:00:54This week, we find out if he can do it against a better team.
00:00:57All right.
00:00:57On the Patriots, a major concern is the scrambling ability of Mark Brunel, who last week was held
00:01:04to only four yards on the ground by the Oakland Raiders.
00:01:08Well, scrambling is not a problem in his mind.
00:01:10It's throwing interceptions.
00:01:11He's thrown six already this year.
00:01:13Last year, he was the second fewest intercepted quarterback in the league behind Jim Harbaugh.
00:01:17Now, some have been tips, some have bounced off of people, but he's forced a few.
00:01:21The bottom line is, for Jacksonville to win, they've got to quit beating themselves with
00:01:25turnovers.
00:01:26And the Jacksonville Jaguars hoping to revert to their form four weeks ago when they convincingly
00:01:32knocked off the Pittsburgh Steelers on opening day.
00:01:35Back with the kickoff in a moment.
00:01:36Back in Foxborough, the New England Patriots have won the toss.
00:01:49They will receive.
00:01:50And Mike Hollis, the second-year man from Idaho, getting set to kick it off to the combination
00:01:56of Dave Beckett and Troy Brown.
00:01:59The New England Patriots, who last week called the game against Arizona, at least Bill Parcells
00:02:08did.
00:02:09He said it is a must-win situation.
00:02:12Drew Bledsoe went out through for three touchdowns, two to running back Curtis Martin.
00:02:18The New England defense held the Cardinals to 170 total yards, while Jacksonville lost
00:02:24to the Oakland Raiders last week in Oakland, 17-3.
00:02:29And this is Megan.
00:02:34So, Megan running it across the 25-yard line.
00:02:38It looked like the ball was knocked free.
00:02:41And the Jaguars are saying that they did recover.
00:02:50And apparently they have.
00:02:53Boy, when you leave that pile open like that long enough, you don't know what's going on
00:02:58underneath there, but the Jacksonville Jaguars came away with it.
00:03:01I didn't see who got the final grip.
00:03:05Bill Parcells.
00:03:06Not the way he wanted to start.
00:03:11All right, here is Beckett.
00:03:12And as he went down, the ball was stripped.
00:03:18Looked like Robert Massey got a piece of it, and Travis Davis with the recovery.
00:03:24So the Jaguars start out at the New England 27-yard line.
00:03:29The quarterback, Mark Brunel, and the handoff to James Stewart.
00:03:40And he is stopped after picking up a yard on the play.
00:03:44Todd Collins playing for the injured Monte Brown, making the tackle.
00:03:47A look at that massive front line for Jacksonville with 6'7", Tony Buscelli, and 6'3", 313-pound
00:03:55Leon Searcy at the tackle.
00:03:57The quarterback, Brunel, the running back, Stewart, and Mastin.
00:04:00The receivers, Ryzen McCardell.
00:04:03And the tight end is Brown.
00:04:05Second down play.
00:04:07And again, Stewart.
00:04:08And he's driven back the other way by Devin Wyman.
00:04:12Wyman is the 6'7 rookie from Kentucky State, only 21 years old.
00:04:19Sixth-round draft pick Jones and McGinnis are the defensive ends.
00:04:24Wheeler and Wyman inside.
00:04:27The linebackers slayed with Johnson and Collins.
00:04:30Todd Collins playing for Monte Brown, who left last week's game with a strained groin.
00:04:34Law and Reynolds at the corners.
00:04:36And Ray and Clay are deep in the secondary.
00:04:39It is a third down and seven at the New England 24-yard line.
00:04:45And the opening kickoff, Dave Meggett pummeled an opportunity for the Jaguars.
00:04:50Here's Brunel.
00:04:51Looked like it got tipped.
00:04:52That has been a problem for Mark Brunel.
00:04:57Actually, last week, they had the long touchdown.
00:05:01They decided to game.
00:05:02Jerry Ball recovered a tipped ball.
00:05:03Much the same kind of a throw.
00:05:05His arm was hit as he let it go.
00:05:07William McGinnis coming up against Tony Buscelli.
00:05:12He wins the battle that time.
00:05:14Just enough of the arm.
00:05:15You know, the quarterback has to have room to follow through.
00:05:17If he doesn't follow through, there's no pace on the ball.
00:05:19That time, of course, it didn't even come out of his hand.
00:05:21And a 42-yard field goal attempt by Mike Hollis, who is 4-for-5 for the season.
00:05:27The angle to the right.
00:05:30High snap.
00:05:30And Hollis with the kick.
00:05:33No good.
00:05:35You wonder, Barb, if the field is a factor already in this ball game.
00:05:38Oh, you see, Bill Parcells with a pleasant punch to Dave Beckett.
00:05:49Happy the fumble did not cost.
00:05:51Well, the New England Patriots will take over at their 33-yard line after the 42-yard field goal attempt.
00:06:00It went wide right off the foot of Hollis.
00:06:04And Blitzo on first down completes to the fullback.
00:06:08Sam Gash lunging across the 40 where he's met by the middle linebacker, Brian Schwartz.
00:06:13Now, Sam, we will see the compassionate side of Bill Parcells following this field goal.
00:06:19Watch Megan and Bill Parcells.
00:06:21Now, that is a love tap right there.
00:06:22Absolutely.
00:06:23And you know what that is?
00:06:23That's a coach that's very familiar with his player.
00:06:25Obviously, he played for him in New York.
00:06:27And he's just saying to him, we got away with one.
00:06:29Now, let's go out there and play some football.
00:06:32It is a second and three at the 40.
00:06:35No score.
00:06:35Just underway with two minutes gone by.
00:06:38And the handoff to Curtis Martin.
00:06:45Short pickup.
00:06:46And that is shy of the first down.
00:06:48Clyde Simmons starting at right defensive end.
00:06:51Made the stop.
00:06:52A look at the offensive line of New England with Armstrong and Lane at the tackles.
00:06:55Roberts and Cratch at the guards.
00:06:57The center is Wollabaugh.
00:07:00Drew Bledsoe, the quarterback, Curtis Martin, Sam Gash.
00:07:03The running backs, the rookie, Kerry Glenn, coming off an outstanding day last week against Arizona.
00:07:08Sean Jefferson is a product of Jacksonville, Florida.
00:07:14And now the Patriots with the double tight end alignment.
00:07:17John Burton joining Ben Coates for a third down and one.
00:07:21It's Coates in motion.
00:07:22And it's to the crowd.
00:07:23And Martin slashes his way for a first down.
00:07:27Schwartz, the leading tackler on the Jaguars, combining with Dana Hall to make that stop.
00:07:33Up front, Kelvin Pritchard is back for the Jaguars.
00:07:36He sat out last week with a strained groin.
00:07:38Clyde Simmons playing for the injured Jeff Lagerman.
00:07:41That is a key loss to Jacksonville.
00:07:44Hardy having an outstanding start.
00:07:46And this is rookie year.
00:07:47Number one grand pick out of Illinois.
00:07:50At the corners, Clark and Washington.
00:07:52Washington, a one-time Patriot.
00:07:54And Davis and Hudson are the deep man.
00:07:56A first down for New England from their 45.
00:07:59Bledsoe with the time.
00:08:00They went short range.
00:08:01Gash.
00:08:03And has a first down.
00:08:05Sam Gash goes 11.
00:08:07Brought down by Yurkovich and Hardy.
00:08:12But Drew Bledsoe sets up this time.
00:08:14He's looking for somebody else.
00:08:15The protection holds up.
00:08:17But nothing's happening downfield.
00:08:18This is a quarterback developing, though.
00:08:20He lays the ball off to a secondary receiver.
00:08:22The ball's not in the air, but about eight or nine yards.
00:08:24And let the ball carry a run.
00:08:25Let the receiver run with it.
00:08:27Two catches for Sam Gash already.
00:08:29Wouldn't think he'd be the leading receiver in the game.
00:08:31And won't be when it's over.
00:08:33But smart football.
00:08:34Another step as we watch.
00:08:37Drew Bledsoe develop as a quarterback.
00:08:38I know you were impressed with the fact that he was able to diversify the attack last week against the Cardinals.
00:08:45But this is certainly a step up in the opposition.
00:08:47And a nice sideline pattern for his favorite receiver, Ben Coates.
00:08:53And that is good for a 14-yard advance.
00:08:56Yeah, he threw to six different receivers last week.
00:08:59Coates has been his favorite.
00:09:00But watch right here as he makes a little token fake.
00:09:03Pressure from the back side.
00:09:05Travis didn't quite get there.
00:09:07Coates is just going to go up and run what's called a corner pattern.
00:09:10He's just going to break to the outside.
00:09:12The ball is usually thrown in a lofting fashion that way.
00:09:15Because he's got to clear all the linebackers to get the ball that far down the field.
00:09:17And Bledsoe is connected on his first three passes for 33 yards.
00:09:22It is back to the ground.
00:09:24And on a slant, Martin.
00:09:26Good second effort by Curtis Martin, the rookie of the year.
00:09:29The rookie of the year last season has the numbers to this point this year.
00:09:33But has not come up with the big plays according to the Patriot coaching staff.
00:09:39Well, you know, they have not had a lot of big plays this year.
00:09:43And neither in the running game or the passing game.
00:09:46But this is a kid that was rookie of the year last year.
00:09:48The only Pro Bowl player as a rookie a year ago.
00:09:51And they're expecting those big plays to come from him.
00:09:55All right.
00:09:55Coates is now flying to the left with a rookie, Glenn, in the slot.
00:10:01Bledsoe.
00:10:02Oh, a shovel as he was going down.
00:10:04But let's see how they call it.
00:10:06Clyde Simmons was all over through Bledsoe.
00:10:10And it will be recorded as a sack.
00:10:16It's a sack right there.
00:10:17The official reached down as if he was going to throw a flag for an intentional grounding.
00:10:23But he ruled in the grasp and therefore gave the sack to Clyde Simmons this time.
00:10:28Tom Coughlin was telling us last night that he had a chat with the veteran Clyde Simmons
00:10:35and said, you've got to step it up.
00:10:38They're just not getting the kind of pressure that they would like.
00:10:41Now, Megan in the backfield.
00:10:43It's a third and 17 at the Jacksonville 37.
00:10:47And Bledsoe did not like what he saw.
00:10:49Takes a timeout.
00:10:509-14 left in this opening quarter.
00:10:53It's the Patriots and Jaguars.
00:10:56No score.
00:10:58If you've got a family, this Escort's for you.
00:11:02Why, just think of the things a wagon can do.
00:11:05It can carry your gear and all of your crew.
00:11:07But best of all, you're ready to haul the occasional item that's six feet tall.
00:11:13You can move the troops safely, even wiggle worms.
00:11:15That's good.
00:11:16And you can move them all easily with what's under the hood.
00:11:19So if you're looking for room, there's no need to fudge it.
00:11:22With Escort, you'll find there's still room in your budget.
00:11:2512,865.
00:11:27That's all.
00:11:27That does it.
00:11:31Todd and Celia Unger began their voyage together nearly 40 years ago.
00:11:37Today, they embark on retirement as carefree as when they first set out.
00:11:42That's because for the past 20-some years, they've worked with a broker from Dean Witter.
00:11:48Respect the power of a client's dream and help them achieve it.
00:11:52At Dean Witter, we measure success one investor at a time.
00:11:58Hey, you're a guy, and guys want to be cool.
00:12:04Hang out with other guys who are cool.
00:12:07But even cool guys sweat.
00:12:0940% more than women, in fact.
00:12:11So how are you going to stay cool with something new?
00:12:14Speed Stick Gel.
00:12:15No other gel keeps you drier, so you always feel your coolest.
00:12:19It's unbeatable gel protection.
00:12:21And guys, no matter how cool they are, need all the protection they can get.
00:12:25New Speed Stick Gel.
00:12:27It's just for the guys.
00:12:28I'm in.
00:12:30We're going to play a hard game.
00:12:32Go, go, go, go, go.
00:12:34Yeah.
00:12:34Back in the middle.
00:12:35Here we go, Dean.
00:12:36Get a hand from football.
00:12:37This is the NFL on NBC.
00:12:44This is a homecoming of sorts for head coach Tom Coughlin of Jacksonville,
00:12:50one-time head man at Boston College.
00:12:52Turned it around at BC in his three years.
00:12:54And receivers coached with the Giants under Bill Parcells from 1988 through 1990.
00:13:00That is the 1990 squad.
00:13:03And that team won a Super Bowl when Bill Parcells and Dave Meggett saw a field goal go wide right.
00:13:10Penalty marker is down.
00:13:11And Terry Glenn interfered with by the left corner, Vinny Clark.
00:13:17Now, Vinny Clark, like Terry Glenn, an alum of Ohio State.
00:13:24And we were talking with Clark last night, and we asked if a defensive pass interference.
00:13:30Number 27.
00:13:31Automatic first down.
00:13:34We asked Vinny if he knows Terry Glenn.
00:13:36He said he will know me after today's game.
00:13:39But Glenn got the edge right there.
00:13:41There was the introduction.
00:13:42Here's the receiver, Terry Glenn, and here's Vinny Clark coming down the field.
00:13:45This is just an admission by Vinny Clark that he's beaten.
00:13:48He knows it's going to be a touchdown right there.
00:13:51He reaches out and grabs him.
00:13:53Nothing you can do but give him that much.
00:13:55And it's a 19-yard penalty.
00:13:56Curtis Martin getting the call on first down.
00:14:00Six minutes gone by in this first quarter.
00:14:03No score.
00:14:05Tom Coughlin's Jaguars missing a 42-yard field goal attempt early.
00:14:09Not able to capitalize on that opening kickoff fumble by Dave Beggett.
00:14:13And the Patriots now driving.
00:14:14Have a second and seven at the Jacksonville 15-yard line.
00:14:18Ninth play of the drive for New England.
00:14:21Now, Jefferson split to the top of your screen out to the left side.
00:14:2787 coats in motion.
00:14:30Off the play fake.
00:14:33Well, it looked pretty but a short pickup as Glenn so is able to combine with Martin met by Kevin Hardy.
00:14:40Well, it was the same play they scored on a week ago against Arizona.
00:14:44And it's a little early in the game to be pulling out a play that you know Jacksonville practiced against all week long.
00:14:51The play involves a sweep that looks like it's going to the left.
00:14:54And then Curtis Martin slips out to the right.
00:14:56Which is a little bit of a misdirection throw.
00:14:58But Jacksonville did their homework.
00:15:00You know that Tom Coughlin wasn't coming back to the Boston area without him.
00:15:04It's a third and four.
00:15:07Now Beggett in the backfield.
00:15:10A screen for Beggett.
00:15:18And Beggett picking up the first down.
00:15:21Yurkovich holding him down from behind.
00:15:25And the New England Patriots have a first and goal from just outside the five.
00:15:32As you see the pass rush getting to the quarterback, you're expecting a screen to come sooner or later.
00:15:38This time it goes off to Beggett.
00:15:40Rather than going to Curtis Martin, Bill Parcells told us last night that he wants to get the ball in Beggett's hands 15, maybe 18 times this afternoon.
00:15:48That's one of them.
00:15:49And now the handoff to Martin bouncing off tacklers and picks up short yard is Brian Schwartz, the second year man from Augustana in South Dakota.
00:16:01That's one of them.
00:16:02Making the stop.
00:16:03Bledsoe, five for five here at the start.
00:16:0644 yards in all.
00:16:08And it looks like John Yurkovich is shaken up one time.
00:16:13Green Bay Packer spent four years with Green Bay.
00:16:18As we look at John Yurkovich right there, I don't think you're going to be getting any tips when Megan comes in the game that they're going to be throwing the ball.
00:16:28Last week, Curtis Martin caught two touchdown passes, so there are no tendencies there when they substitute run or pass.
00:16:36A reminder coming up next right here on NBC, the conclusion of the Solheim Cup.
00:16:45And after two days of competition, the Europeans lead the Americans by two points.
00:16:50The final day is coming up next right here on NBC.
00:16:556.53 remaining in this first quarter.
00:16:58Marv Albert, Sam Weiss from Foxborough.
00:17:02Jaguars and Patriots are scoreless.
00:17:04It is a second and goal down at the five-yard line on the 12th play of the drive is coming up.
00:17:09On the subject of Dave Megan, Bill Parcells telling us that he feels that he's putting up his best numbers as a Patriot because he's a little quicker.
00:17:18He is able to pass up on the desserts these days, particularly in training camp.
00:17:23Parcells keeping a careful eye on Megan.
00:17:27Coates with the touchdown catch.
00:17:29A bullet thrown by Bledsoe.
00:17:34Coates with the reception in front of Clark and the Patriots with a 6-0 lead.
00:17:41Drew Bledsoe is throwing the ball to a lot of different people, but when it gets down to crunch time, you go to your favorite receiver.
00:17:47And that right now is Ben Coates.
00:17:52The New England Patriots are just 4-for-10 scoring inside the red zone.
00:17:56They march right down the first drive and get into the red zone and into the end zone as well.
00:18:03And now Adam Vinatieri, who has certainly had his ups and downs for the extra point, and it is blocked!
00:18:11Marv, I think that Mr. Vinatieri has got some explaining to do when he walks over to the sideline.
00:18:18It's going to be an interesting passage as he goes by Bill Parcells.
00:18:21Well, Parcells was telling us that Vinatieri is in a week-to-week scenario, and that certainly does not help his cause.
00:18:34The new Ford Taurus has people talking.
00:18:37Road and Track says the new V6 is a high-strung engine born to gallop.
00:18:41Chris Hayward said...
00:18:42I'm surprised a car this comfortable has that much pickup.
00:18:45Automobile Magazine named Taurus Design of the Year.
00:18:48And Ray Wells agrees...
00:18:49The new shape is just fantastic.
00:18:51Ford finally got me.
00:18:52The new Ford Taurus.
00:18:54Now with $1,500 cash back, Taurus starts at just $1,7045.
00:18:59Hurry. Offer ends soon.
00:19:03This morning, strange things are happening all over the world.
00:19:07Shops are about to open.
00:19:09Empty.
00:19:10Part suppliers are partless.
00:19:13And assembly workers have nothing to assemble.
00:19:16Is this any way to run a business?
00:19:17With FedEx it is.
00:19:20Every morning, the world gets just what it wants, just when it needs it.
00:19:24Without expensive warehousing.
00:19:26Gone today.
00:19:27Here again tomorrow.
00:19:29Now that's the way the world works.
00:19:31I helped my dad build this place.
00:19:35Well, help.
00:19:37I was so small I could barely swing the hammer.
00:19:40And he taught me a lot about tools.
00:19:43He used to say, you can buy cheap tools every couple of years.
00:19:47Or you can buy Stanley once.
00:19:49Since 1843, a company from New Britain, Connecticut has been helping people do things right.
00:19:55Stanley.
00:19:55I even take my tape for all fishing.
00:19:58Well, that way I'll know how big a story to tell.
00:20:03Tonight, Steven Seagal is on Deadly Ground.
00:20:06The explosive network premiere that takes you to the top of the world.
00:20:10On Deadly Ground, NBC Tonight.
00:20:11Next Saturday, Big Ten power Ohio State invade South Bend when Ron Paulus and the undefeated Fighting Irish host the Buckeyes.
00:20:20Notre Dame football is home on NBC.
00:20:21A rookie from South Dakota State, Adam Vinatieri, who just missed that extra point.
00:20:29Actually blocked by Clyde Simmons last week.
00:20:32Missed an extra point.
00:20:33Missed a 47-yard field goal.
00:20:35And then late in the game, hit from the 31, which probably was a confidence builder on the part of the coaching staff.
00:20:41Kendrick Bullard with the return.
00:20:44A first-year player from Arkansas State, who last season spent time on the Patriot practice squad.
00:20:50Takes it for 24 yards.
00:20:52And let's take a look back at that blocked extra point.
00:20:56The snap is good.
00:20:57Tom Tupas putting the ball down good.
00:20:59The field is a little rough.
00:21:00They played a soccer game here last night.
00:21:02Don't want to make an excuse because the ball is met with the foot too high on the ball.
00:21:07The ball didn't get any lift.
00:21:08And we know that Adam Vinatieri is walking on thin ice.
00:21:12In fact, last week when he attempted and made that 31-yard field goal at the end, it was not a confidence builder.
00:21:18It was a death sentence if he missed it.
00:21:20So the Jaguars starting out first and 10 from the 28.
00:21:27The deep drop by Brunel cannot find anyone.
00:21:30And now does.
00:21:32In the open field out of the 45-yard line, Willie Jackson picking up 17 on that pass play.
00:21:39Chris Slade and Ted Johnson combined to make the stop.
00:21:43Willie McGinnis told us yesterday that he is what is called a spy.
00:21:46In other words, he's a pass rusher, but his job is to look at Brunel.
00:21:52And if he scrambles, it's his job to make sure he doesn't scramble for yardage.
00:21:55You see, he's looking at him.
00:21:56He's not really trying to work his way up the field.
00:21:58He's working along the line.
00:21:59Be careful there at the end.
00:22:01Willie McGinnis, they're called those personal fouls.
00:22:03And a first and 10 of the 45-yard line flag is thrown as James Stewart went flying.
00:22:10Mark Wheeler able to trip him up.
00:22:14Mark Wheeler left defensive tackle and a marker is down.
00:22:22Hold in.
00:22:24Offense number 73.
00:22:2510-yard penalty.
00:22:27Still first down.
00:22:27So, Brian DeMarco is called for the penalty.
00:22:34Larry Nemers, the referee.
00:22:38When the umpire throws that flag, it's almost always holding.
00:22:41I've been a proponent of putting that umpire on the offensive side of the ball.
00:22:45I think he's probably in the worst position to see those holding
00:22:47because he's avoiding all the traffic coming right at him.
00:22:49But the league so far hasn't gone with my suggestion.
00:22:52Yes.
00:22:53First and 20 at the 35-yard line.
00:22:576-0 New England on top.
00:23:00And the out pattern for Andre Risen making his first catch covered by Ricky Reynolds.
00:23:07Talking about the field being in poor condition due to the soccer play here last night.
00:23:12I know your favorite team in the Major League Soccer League,
00:23:15the New England Revolution, concluded matters last night.
00:23:18They have 38,000 here in Foxborough.
00:23:21The Columbus crew beating the Revolution 1-0.
00:23:25They're always a tough opponent.
00:23:26Yes.
00:23:27And I know you've been studying this very carefully.
00:23:30The Revolution is owned by New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft.
00:23:36So, it is fully under the control of the Patriots.
00:23:41And if they have any problems with the field, see the president of the club.
00:23:45And Brunel able to hang in despite the pressure.
00:23:48And completes to the tight end of Rich Griffith, who was met by the left corner, Ty Long.
00:23:56Brunel is just a little bit busy with his feet right here.
00:24:00Watch him set up.
00:24:00His head, good carry of the ball.
00:24:02Head nice down the field.
00:24:04A little anxious.
00:24:05The pressure's really not gotten to him.
00:24:06He moved out of the way a couple of plays ago and bought enough time to complete the ball down the field.
00:24:11But I think he feels the pressure.
00:24:12Not so much the hit as the tip ball.
00:24:14It's got to be in the back of his mind.
00:24:16Already have him once today.
00:24:17It is a third down and six.
00:24:20At midfield, four minutes to go.
00:24:23First quarter, Patriots six.
00:24:25Jaguars nothing.
00:24:28And Brunel picked off.
00:24:31Intercepted by Jimmy Hitchcock.
00:24:33Another interception thrown by Martin Brunel.
00:24:39That is his seventh of the season.
00:24:42That matches his total of all last year.
00:24:45That pass intended for Andre Risen.
00:24:50Andre Risen is just making an inside move.
00:24:53And the ball is thrown behind him.
00:24:55This is not a poor pattern.
00:24:56It's not really great coverage.
00:24:58It's just a badly thrown ball.
00:25:00Right into the arms of Jimmy Hitchcock.
00:25:03And we saw briefly there Tom Coughlin on the sideline.
00:25:06And he is showing his frustration because they're making, Jacksonville is,
00:25:10they're making so many mistakes that are unforced errors right now.
00:25:14And basically they're beating themselves a lot in the last couple of weeks.
00:25:18First NFL interception for the second-year man from North Carolina.
00:25:22Carolina, Jimmy Hitchcock, see the flags flying, the movement leading to the penalty markers.
00:25:31Encroachment, defense number 92.
00:25:34Five-yard penalty, still first down.
00:25:36Well, number 92, Don Davey, who started last week for the injured Kelvin Pritchett.
00:25:42There is Mark Brunel.
00:25:44In his first year as a full-time starter last season,
00:25:48took over the final 11 games when Steve Berline was sidelined by injury.
00:25:52Did a solid job.
00:25:53Had a terrific opening game against the Steelers,
00:25:56but it has not been the same since then.
00:26:00It's a first and five.
00:26:01And Bledsoe, short-range to the flat with Curtis Martin breaking tackles for the first down.
00:26:11Stopped by the strong safety, Travis Davis.
00:26:14Not only is Drew Bledsoe throwing the ball to different receivers,
00:26:18the designs of the play are calling for those receivers to get the ball.
00:26:23Watch him roll.
00:26:23He's going to fake two, Curtis Martin.
00:26:25Roll to the right.
00:26:26Head and eyes looking to the right.
00:26:27You can see the defense even pulled that way.
00:26:30And then the ball thrown back to Curtis Martin.
00:26:31He was a primary receiver on that one, not an alternate receiver.
00:26:34The designs of the play are helping Drew Bledsoe now become a more complete quarterback.
00:26:38And Bledsoe, 7 for 7, 57 yards, including a touchdown.
00:26:44A flag is thrown.
00:26:45The play is whistled dead.
00:26:51This is going to go against Benny Clark again.
00:26:54He's already had one big mistake.
00:26:57Encroachment on the defense number 27.
00:27:00Five-yard penalty, still first down.
00:27:02And 27 is the left corner.
00:27:04Benny Clark, another former Packer, first-round pick.
00:27:08Of Green Bay back in 1991.
00:27:12Bottom of your screen right here, you're going to see Benny Clark just flinch.
00:27:16Nothing moves but him.
00:27:19Cannot make contact with the offense before the snap of the ball.
00:27:23And fourth penalty assessed on Jacksonville for 39 yards.
00:27:27Again, a first and five.
00:27:30Martin on a sweep following Gash.
00:27:33And could not find the extra running room.
00:27:36Curtis Martin hit down by the right corner.
00:27:38Mickey Washington and strong side linebacker, Kevin Hardy.
00:27:42Good job by Jacksonville just stretching the defensive line of scrimmage.
00:27:49Sometimes you don't really get penetration up into the backfield there.
00:27:52You just make them run sideways long enough for the rest of the defensive helpers to come in there and clean up the play.
00:27:57So, the Patriots have a second and five at the 20 after struggling inside the red zone in Buffalo a couple of weeks back.
00:28:06New England converting points on all five possessions against Arizona in the red zone last week.
00:28:12Let's open it up.
00:28:13Let's open it up.
00:28:13Let's open it up.
00:28:13Let's open it up.
00:28:14Let's open it up.
00:28:15Let's open it up.
00:28:16Let's open it up.
00:28:17Oh, nice ball by the rookie, Terry Glenn.
00:28:20Run out by Clark.
00:28:25It's good for 15 and a first and goal for New England.
00:28:31Terry Glenn, who's still bothered by the pulled hamstring, missed five weeks going back to training camp, but has really blossomed the last couple of weeks.
00:28:41You can watch him come in motion.
00:28:43He's just going to come right back across the field right here.
00:28:46Terry Glenn is one of the primary receivers.
00:28:48This is a deep and short route knows you've got somebody running deep down the field and Terry Glenn coming underneath the pros to the open man.
00:28:56All right, Bledsoe couldn't find anyone in the end zone and then throws it away.
00:29:00The new rule came into play right there, Mark.
00:29:02No, no duress, but why run out of bounds and lose yardage?
00:29:05Just throw the ball away.
00:29:06Don't worry about your statistics and help your team out.
00:29:09Bill Parcells has to be happy with some of the subtle things that Drew Bledsoe is doing here in the first quarter.
00:29:15That was the first in completion, eight of nine, 72 yards.
00:29:20He faced the pressure from the left defensive end, Joel Smenge, and it sets it a second-and-goal at the five-yard line.
00:29:32Obstrong and Lane at the tackles.
00:29:34Roberts and Kretsch, the guards, Willebaugh in the center.
00:29:39That's Glenn, 88, in motion.
00:29:40Bledsoe, well, the end zone, but Glenn could not detach himself.
00:29:46He was tied up, and Bledsoe upset.
00:29:50He was looking for an interference call.
00:29:52Well, the interference is called if the initial action is taken by the defender.
00:29:56If they just run into each other, the defender has as much right to his real estate as the wide receiver does.
00:30:02It becomes a judgment call, and that would have involved Vinnie Clark one more time.
00:30:08You see him coming in motion, he's going to go up and to the corner, and here's Vinnie Clark.
00:30:12Let's see who initiates the contact.
00:30:14He's up.
00:30:16New England has a complaint.
00:30:18He reached, Vinnie Clark reached right out there.
00:30:20He wasn't in route anywhere else.
00:30:23It's a fur down, third and goal at the five.
00:30:26Off the back pedal, that was almost picked off with pressure by Pritchett, and Eddie Robinson would have had a free route to six points,
00:30:37as Bledsoe, I think, if he could do that one over again, would take it back.
00:30:42Absolutely, you can see the feelings of Bill Parcell on the sideline.
00:30:47They only had four touchdowns and ten tries coming into this ballgame in the red zone.
00:30:50Only Cincinnati and Buffalo were worst at that effort.
00:30:53They marched down and scored the last time, and now Adam Vinatieri has his chance.
00:30:58The Adam Vinatieri adventure continues this from 23 yards away, and he's able to hit a sardonic greeting from the crowd.
00:31:14How about one?
00:31:18AT&T presents A World Without Limits.

00:31:59Since 1992, the San Francisco 49ers have been a point-scoring machine.
00:32:04In that time, the team that perfected the West Coast offense
00:32:07has averaged more than 29 points per game
00:32:10and led the league in scoring every year.
00:32:12Four consecutive years at the top of the charts.
00:32:15A lofty new NFL standard.
00:32:18This is Ford Escort.
00:32:20It's new and it's nifty.
00:32:21It's made for the smart, the intelligence rifty.
00:32:23It's new out and in.
00:32:25Has airbags for two.
00:32:26Even anti-lock brakes are available.
00:32:28Ooh.
00:32:29The trunk?
00:32:29It is huge.
00:32:30To hold tremendous treasure.
00:32:32And if your treasure is of stupendous measure,
00:32:35the rear seat folds down to let bigger things in.
00:32:37Still leaving room for your next of kin's kin.
00:32:40It has all the what's-its and gidgets, to put it concisely.
00:32:43And Escort's right price should suit you quite nicely.
00:32:48NBC Tonight.
00:32:50The battle to conquer Earth comes to a head.
00:32:52The big giant head.
00:32:54Good dick is trapped in the basement.
00:32:56There's an invisible box.
00:32:57While evil dick's upstairs getting acquainted.
00:32:59Next time it won't be so nice.
00:33:02How about a romantic dessert?
00:33:05And Dennis Rodman, the one-hour third-hour premiere NBC Tonight.
00:33:10One minute, 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
00:33:13And the New England Patriots now leading the Jacksonville Jaguars.
00:33:17The mistake-prone Jaguars here in the first quarter.
00:33:219-0.
00:33:22Here is Minoteri kicking to Jordan and Bullard.
00:33:25And a short kick played by Kendrick Bullard.
00:33:29Out across the 20.
00:33:31Nice move.
00:33:32And works to the 32-yard line.
00:33:36Broke down by Corwin Brown.
00:33:37Got a 25-yard return.
00:33:39And just a moment ago, Vinny Clark on the phone.
00:33:44And I gather it may not be a pleasant conversation.
00:33:48Probably is not.
00:33:49If I were upstairs, I'd be telling you, look, Vinny, it looks like they're coming after you, pal.
00:33:54They're going to your side.
00:33:55And you could have been called for interference in the end zone.
00:33:57Really should have been called on the last series.
00:34:00Just a little warning to be smarter on the field.
00:34:03Looks like they're coming after you, pal.
00:34:06The old coming after you, pal, comment.
00:34:08A first and 10 at the 32-yard line.
00:34:11Off the play bank through now.
00:34:13And it's dropped.
00:34:14Dropped by the fullback, Lachey Mastin, who is covered by Todd Collins.
00:34:21And here you see Willie McGinnis, whose job it is to be the spy.
00:34:24I think we heard that from another player that had mentioned their game plan a little bit to us yesterday.
00:34:30And this is a common practice when you've got a quarterback that is mobile, like Ronell.
00:34:34You always have somebody assigned to make sure that he is the last line of defense against the run.
00:34:40This was a bootleg.
00:34:41McGinnis to that side.
00:34:42It was his job all the way.
00:34:43A second and 10 at the 32-yard line.
00:34:48One minute left in this first quarter.
00:34:50The draw does not work.
00:34:51James Stewart was not able to accelerate.
00:34:54And you have to wonder the effect of the field.
00:34:59It looked like Stewart could not get any tracking at all.
00:35:04You know what happens when you've got a bad field?
00:35:05It actually works to the advantage of the passing game because the defense can't get any purchase to rush.
00:35:11It works against the running game because the offensive line can't get any purchase to knock somebody out of the way.
00:35:16The runners don't have the advantage of being able to plant sharply.
00:35:19The Jaguars, who had problems running last week, thus far today, three rushes, zero yards.
00:35:26Not able to get going on the ground.
00:35:29Ronell to throw.
00:35:32Incompletes.
00:35:35Keenan McCardell stopped by Ty Long.
00:35:38Short of the first down as this first quarter rolls down.
00:35:42Incidentally, that is a new pronunciation lookout.
00:35:46And words now with Terry Ray involved and Ty Law also involved in that one.
00:35:53Going against Dave Wydell.
00:35:54I don't believe I'd want to go against Dave Wydell to begin with.
00:35:56There's your first mistake.
00:35:57And you don't want to get a penalty because Wydell was facing away.
00:36:02You could go after somebody.
00:36:03The officials always seem to see the second guy.
00:36:06And I bet you that is what Bill Parcells is saying right now.
00:36:09Dave Wydell.
00:36:11A local product.
00:36:12Played his college ball at Boston College.
00:36:14That's the end of the first quarter.
00:36:16Big car.
00:36:22Take it slow.
00:36:24Everybody okay?
00:36:25Wait a minute.
00:36:29What's he doing?
00:36:32He wants more.
00:36:33Right there.
00:36:34Over there.
00:36:34More, more, more.
00:36:37Of that Dr. Pepper flavor I've been looking for.
00:36:41Give me more.
00:36:42More, more.
00:36:43Diet Dr. Pepper.
00:36:45The taste that I've been looking for.
00:36:46Diet Dr. Pepper.
00:36:48The taste you've been looking for.
00:36:50Why do I rent from Enterprise?
00:36:52Very simple.
00:36:53No stress.
00:36:55They arrange to pick me up free so I don't have to ask anyone for a ride.
00:37:00See?
00:37:00No stress.
00:37:02Pick Enterprise.
00:37:03We'll pick you up.
00:37:05You've been thinking about getting a digital satellite dish.
00:37:09And thinking.
00:37:10And thinking some more.
00:37:12Well, think about this.
00:37:13The people at Radio Shack can answer your questions.
00:37:16Plus, now they've got great deals.
00:37:19Like a Prime Star satellite system for only about a dollar a day plus installation.
00:37:2395 channels of prime sports and movies with terrific picture and sound quality.
00:37:28Think about it.
00:37:29Better yet, stop thinking about it.
00:37:31Radio Shack.
00:37:33You've got questions.
00:37:34We've got answers.
00:37:34Carbon monoxide isn't the only thing to worry about coming from your tailpipe.
00:37:41Because with every stroke of your engine, motor oil is being vaporized into exhaust, leaving less and less protection.
00:37:47That's why there's Castrol GTX 10W30.
00:37:50Of every leading 10W30, Castrol provides the most protection against volatility burn-off.
00:37:56So use Castrol or watch more of your protection go up in smoke.
00:38:00Castrol GTX.
00:38:02The most protection against volatility burn-off.
00:38:05On to the second quarter in Foxborough.
00:38:09Castrol, Marv Albert with Sam Weiss, 9-0 New England.
00:38:12First punt of the day, Brian Barker.
00:38:15And line drives it in the direction of Dave Beckett and he will let it bounce.
00:38:23And took a Jaguar hop inside the 20, but a flag is thrown at midfield.
00:38:29A 44-yard punt by Barker.
00:38:33The high snap from the center, threw the timing off, got somebody downfield a little early.
00:38:39Going to have to make a decision on the New England side.
00:38:43Do they want to take another punt or they want to take it right there on the 23, 22-and-a-half yard line?
00:38:47You can look at, as you watch both these coaches, Bill Parcells working his players all the time.
00:38:54Friday at practice, we watched him make comments during practice to try to...
00:38:58Ineligible downfield on the kicking team, number 41, 5-yard penalty, will re-kick.
00:39:05Wow, that was Dave.
00:39:08He was working the players during practice on...
00:39:11The putt.
00:39:17...understands the words, we might not understand if we were hearing them spoken.
00:39:22The verb might not fit the noun, but Dave Beckett's been around him long enough.
00:39:29...reading that body language right there again.
00:39:33And they're going to have to punt it again, and Dave Beckett probably got another quick lecture from the side line.
00:39:37All right, here's Barker.
00:39:39Seventh year out of Santa Clara punted seven times last week.
00:39:47Seventh year out of Santa Clara punted seven times last week.
00:39:52Hold on to that football, just tugging it to his chest, taken down by Dana Hall.
00:39:56Nine-yard return by Megan.
00:40:01Let's follow Dave as he makes his way to his friend Bill Parcells on the sideline.
00:40:06He had three big returns last week against Arizona.
00:40:11Bill is now going to play the game.
00:40:13I'm going to go over here and look at my sideline sheet.
00:40:15Got a little note to myself, pick up some milk on the way home.
00:40:19And a first and ten at the 42-yard line.
00:40:24So the Patriots with a 9-0 lead in the second quarter gets underway.
00:40:29Drew Blensoe off to a excellent start.
00:40:33Eight and 11, 72 yards.
00:40:36Here's Blensoe.
00:40:40Couldn't find anyone and was pursued by Hardy.
00:40:43And had to run it out of bounds.
00:40:47A dismal opening quarter for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
00:40:51Only one first down, zero rushing yards.
00:40:55New England with only 11, but they've done it with the passing game.
00:40:59Tom Coughlin told us that he's just frustrated because nobody seems to be making the play.
00:41:04You know, you design a lot of football plays, good defenses, good solid game plan, practice hard all week.
00:41:09Then the game starts, you've got to go out and make plays.
00:41:12It comes right down to good football players doing it on Sunday.
00:41:15Second down and ten.
00:41:21And Blensoe to the other side again.
00:41:24Sam Gash.
00:41:25So the fullback Sam Gash with his third reception.
00:41:29Met by Kevin Hardy, but just a short pick up.
00:41:34The ball is spotted at the 48-yard line.
00:41:38Now Meggett is back in, talking about the troubles of Jacksonville.
00:41:42Is it getting any worse than last week?
00:41:43They lose a tough game to the Raiders.
00:41:46And after the game, due to a water main break, there was no water in the showers of the Oakland Coliseum.
00:41:52Sam would have to say that was the final insult.
00:41:55Yeah, but there's no problem.
00:41:56They have what they call shower pills.
00:41:58The guys know what they are.
00:42:00Lots of cologne, I'm told.
00:42:03Third down and four.
00:42:04And Blensoe is taken down in the grasp.
00:42:07Taken down by Clyde Simmons.
00:42:09So Clyde Simmons at 32 years of age, the oldest player on the Jacksonville roster.
00:42:15Starting for the injury, Jeff Lagerman comes up with the sack.
00:42:19The sack.
00:42:20First sack of the day for Jacksonville and the second for Simmons.
00:42:23And referee Larry Numbers has been pretty good to Blensoe now twice.
00:42:26Simmons has had him in the grasp.
00:42:28Could have been called a, you know, intentional grounding to save the sack.
00:42:32But he gave him the sack, which the result's the same.
00:42:35They're going to come up with a fourth and long.
00:42:39And Tom Tupa back inside his 20-yard line, putting for the first time of the day.
00:42:43Chris Hudson, who's averaging 16 yards per punt return among the leaders in the AFC, is back fourth.
00:42:53Here comes Hudson.
00:42:55Very casual fashion looking for the opening.
00:42:58And it tossed it off! Hudson!
00:43:03Fumbled!
00:43:07Recovers!
00:43:08Megan, who fumbled away the opening kickoff, comes up with that loose ball.
00:43:13And another Jaguar mistake.
00:43:16Unless the whistle was blown.
00:43:22A 45-yard punt and a 17-yard return.
00:43:25And apparently there is a question as to whether the Patriots came up with a fumble.
00:43:31And the ruling is that Hudson was down, so the Jaguars will maintain possession.
00:43:37There is no instant replay, so all you can do is plead your case.
00:43:40And apparently, a change of heart.
00:43:45Oh.
00:43:46Bill Parcells.
00:43:47There was a fumble on the play, recovered by the kicking team.
00:43:48First down.
00:43:49In that case, is Bill the plaintiff or the defendant, would you say?
00:43:50I know he's been awarded the victory, though.
00:43:51Well, another look at it.
00:43:52The ball is out.
00:43:53That's clearly a fumble.
00:43:54Now it's who recovers the ball.
00:43:55And I don't think there's any question about that.
00:43:57Dave Megan has the fumble recovery.
00:43:59Although the officials did talk it over.
00:44:00You could see the reaction from Parcells.
00:44:01At first, it appeared that they had ruled that Hudson was down and then they had the
00:44:04change, so Megan with the recovery and a first down for the Patriots at the 30th.
00:44:08The ball is out.
00:44:09It's a fumble.
00:44:10Now the ball is out.
00:44:13And the ball is out.
00:44:14There's a fumble.
00:44:15And the ball is out.
00:44:16But the ball is out.
00:44:17It's clearly a fumble.
00:44:18Now it's who recovers the ball.
00:44:19And I don't think there's any question about that that.
00:44:20Dave Megan has the fumble recovery, although the officials did talk it over.
00:44:24You could see the reaction from Parcells.
00:44:25At first, it appeared that they had ruled that the Hudson was down and then they made the change.
00:44:31So Megan with the recovery and a first down for the Patriots at the 31st.
00:44:33Patriots at the 37 in Jacksonville Territory.
00:44:36No room for Martin.
00:44:38Penny Clark on the stop.
00:44:42And we are told that there are some audio difficulties.
00:44:47We apologize.
00:44:48Sam is downstairs working on it.
00:44:51Can you hear me from down here?
00:44:53You know, you're watching the running game, and I'll mention it one more time.
00:44:56When the field is not in good shape, the running game is not your best strong suit.
00:45:00It's not your strong suit because you can't get a purchase to block people,
00:45:03but you defensively can't get much of a purchase to pass rush either,
00:45:07so throwing the ball is a little better.
00:45:09Second and 12.
00:45:10Beggett.
00:45:12He's at this spot and able to run inside the 35-yard line.
00:45:17Dave Beggett spent six years with the Giants.
00:45:19This is the second season with New England.
00:45:22More expected last year.
00:45:24One of the best all-purpose players in the NFL,
00:45:27but as we touched on earlier, Bill Parcells feels that Beggett,
00:45:31who has shed some weight, is quicker, and this is the best that he has played.
00:45:37He likes him quicker.
00:45:38He likes him being as versatile as he was when he was playing for him in New York.
00:45:42Third down and six.
00:45:44Oh, beautiful pass.
00:45:45Wifled through.
00:45:47Five left, though.
00:45:48He's now able to find Sean Jefferson, who returned last week after missing the previous game due to a concussion.
00:45:56Sean Jefferson, a native of Jacksonville.
00:46:00Jefferson, right up here at the top of your screen.
00:46:02This is what Drew Bledsoe can do.
00:46:04He's a big, strong-arm quarterback.
00:46:06Off his back foot, really, when he lets that ball go, right between the linebackers and the dropping into the zone.
00:46:12And a first out of the 20-yard line.
00:46:14Here's Beggett.
00:46:15What a break, a tackle.
00:46:17Runs it to the 16.
00:46:18The strong safety, Travis Davis, able to come up with the stop.
00:46:23Vincent Brisby continues to sit it out for the Patriots, where they pull the hamstring.
00:46:30Missed the first four weeks.
00:46:33My week coming up next week will certainly help Brisby.
00:46:36But, meanwhile, opportunities for Jefferson and Graham, along with Glenn and Dietrich Jones,
00:46:44who is a rookie out of Pittsburgh.
00:46:46Actually, Jefferson is the sixth receiver to catch the ball again this week.
00:46:50Six different receivers.
00:46:51Second down and six.
00:46:53Looked to be a mix-up.
00:46:54Was that a play fake?
00:46:56Beggett on the reception.
00:46:58Stopped by Vinny Clark.
00:47:01Well, what's going on?
00:47:02Last week, Ray Perkins, the offensive coordinator, with all kinds of wrinkles in the game,
00:47:07planned four attempts to connect fourth-down situations.
00:47:09A flea flicker, a half-back pass, an end-to-round two-point conversion.
00:47:14And, Sam, would you describe that play?
00:47:16Just simply the misdirection.
00:47:17This time, Meggett is coming from his left, slipping out to the right, with the flow going back to the left.
00:47:25They ran that play twice, scored two touchdowns on it a week ago with Curtis Martin.
00:47:29And it is Vinny Clark who is down.
00:47:32They ran that play twice, scored two touchdowns on it a week ago with the first-down situation.
00:47:35They ran it in the game.
00:47:37They ran it out.
00:47:39They ran it out.
00:47:43He ran it out.
00:47:45He ran it out.
00:47:49It was a bit too close.
00:47:51He ran it out.
00:47:51He ran it out.
00:47:52He ran it and turned it out.
00:47:54He ran it out.
00:47:55He ran it out.
00:47:58He ran it out of the road since he was away.

00:50:07with the field goal to tip right here now tom tupa remember is a quarterback and a punter
00:50:11is the holder 23 yard field goal for vinatieri earlier this is from 30 yards away and elime drives

00:50:53thrown the interception this is his time now to regroup come back in there and as tom coughlin said
00:50:59step up to the plate and make a play first three possessions the jacksonville jaguars really haven't

00:52:2710 to 7. that's the second quarter score mark thank you greg nine and a half remaining
00:52:34in this first half here in foxborough 12 nothing patriots in front of the jaguars
00:52:40draw play for nothing james stewart is stopped by willie mcginnis and the jaguars not able to do a
00:52:49thing on the ground fourth rush zero yards william again is taking charge of this defense right now
00:52:56and tom coughlin is searching for something just to break the ice here a little bit he understands
00:53:02that his quarterback is is a little bit shaky things aren't going right hoping that james
00:53:06stewart maybe can break it not happening even with the biggest offensive line in football in front of
00:53:13it it is a fur down and ten 87 mccardell in motion
00:53:20grunel facing the pressure and throws it away
00:53:25patriots getting off the ball very criskly you know they're anticipating a stab count is one
00:53:31little one little extra thing that's going right for new england and going wrong for jacksonville
00:53:36coaches upstairs hopefully pick up with that from the jacksonville standpoint and will remind him you
00:53:41got to mix this thing up a little bit they had a running start and there was no chance they didn't
00:53:45have enough blockers to begin with they had to throw the ball hot in that situation so for jacksonville
00:53:50four possessions only one first down picked up and brian barker back to punt from his goal line dave meggett
00:53:58is at the 45 yard line in patriot territory
00:54:04meggett with the return
00:54:06oh finds the opening picks up blockers and moves down to the 36-yard line a 40-yard punt 19-yard return
00:54:16and lashay maston with the stop on megan who has certainly picked it up after that opening kickoff
00:54:25this is it to empower ohio state invade south bed when ron paulis and the undefeated fighting

00:54:42that last play watch right here and as we approach two o'clock the end of summer william again has
00:54:48sure does get a good start on autumn and also on the uh jacksonville jaguars sam not your normal
00:54:55color commentator noting the change of the seasons as the game progresses and a flag is is thrown as
00:55:03i do that only as a public service announcement offense number 84 prior to the snap five-yard penalty
00:55:09still first down the offside on sean jefferson sam seen earlier today reading the farmer's almanac
00:55:17well i can't get away with anything i'm gonna i'm gonna watch very carefully everything you do and
00:55:23try to mimic it okay that's not difficult it was a first and 15 at the 41 yard line 8 40 remaining
00:55:32in the first half it's new england 12 jacksonville nothing bar valbert sand weiss you see the
00:55:36the the uh jump this time tony brockens and it's completed for curtis martin that's a defensive
00:55:44penalty new england is going to get their option they're going to take the play almost the first
00:55:49down on first and 15. this is much i will talk about it right after larry namers gives us the defense
00:55:58offside number 94 penalty is refused second down well that is kelvin pritchard who's called for the
00:56:07now they're correcting it it was tony brackens as i said you're absolutely correct i wish you had a
00:56:12dime for every time i told the players to continue the play if there's an off side actually i wish
00:56:17had a million dollars i mean it's gonna make a lot of money right but but that's something you always
00:56:21do carry the play out and on second and one curtis mark gunning for the first down wrapped up by
00:56:28pritchard
00:56:32and let's see where they they spot the ball in an official timeout with 8 17 left
00:56:39in this first half a 12 nothing new england lead bletsoe on a five yard touchdown pass to
00:56:45coates 12 plays 67 yards six nothing lead vinatieri missing the extra point and then field goals by
00:56:52vinatieri from 23 and from 30 yards away and they are just short of the first down
00:57:04well you can experience the nfl all week long on nfl.com the official website of the national
00:57:12football league for all the tackles and touchdowns and a live game day scoreboard nfl.com it is a third
00:57:20and inches at the jacksonville 27 yard line through bletsoe off to the good start they have done it in
00:57:29the air in this first half 11 of 15 93 yards including a touchdown let's see if we climb in the head of
00:57:37bill parcells he's got bruce armstrong and left tackle he's got clyde simmons going against him
00:57:42as he run left quarterback snake is the other option that you've got you know if we give you
00:57:49enough time you hit on all possibilities absolutely well if you talk long enough you can watch it take
00:57:53place if you come right back and say that's what i did and they did pick up the first down
00:58:00well mark brunel has struggled in the first half four of nine forty yards intercepted once bletsoe 11
00:58:11of 15 when mark brunel was a freshman of the university of washington he hosted a
00:58:18high school prospect by the name of drew bletsoe on a recruiting trip to the school but
00:58:22drew ended up attending cross-state rival washington state they met three times in college brunel
00:58:29winning two of the three by big scores incidentally 55 10 and 56 21 the first time they've met in the nfl
00:58:38taking place right here this is the first time they have met and clyde simmons of the jaguars is down
00:58:46hurting
00:58:50clyde simmons with two sacks in this first half
00:58:53clyde simmons is already replacing the injured jeff lagerman
00:59:00in this ball game and he has played one of the way better really than anybody else on that defensive
00:59:06side of the ball they're gonna miss him if he's out lagerman suffered a sprained left knee
00:59:10last week he will probably be out two more games we were talking with mark brunel about that recruiting
00:59:18uh visit of ru bletsoe and he got the idea wasn't memorable for brunel well this renewing a pack 10
00:59:26college rivalry is brunel and led his huskies to consecutive victories over the cougars but on the
00:59:31final game of bletsoe's collision career and the outcome different in blizzard conditions
00:59:35bletsoe passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns to lead his club to a victory over the then fifth
00:59:42ranked huskies
00:59:4742 23 the final score of that final meeting between the two i say not a memorable visit because i think
00:59:54bletsoe had his mind made up he was not going to the university of washington sean jefferson
01:00:01stopped by by dave thomas second catch for jefferson and clyde simmons was able to
01:00:09walk off without any help second down and four at the 19 yard line
01:00:18down to seven minutes to go in this second quarter jerry glenn is to the right but again it's to the
01:00:24ground in the pit hole curtis martin galloping his way and has the first down hardy and davis
01:00:32combined to make the stop and new england caught jacksonville in a hard up the field pass rush kind
01:00:38of defense and just split it right down the middle another jacksonville player down well earlier was
01:00:45benny clark clyde simmons a moment ago and another injury we'll be back to check it out in a moment
01:00:52dr pepper presents holy smokes what a play just what the doctor ordered mile high magic used to
01:01:03mean soaring spirals but a new prescription has given the broncos a new dimension defense with an
01:01:10infusion of youth and motivation the broncos defense has already staged a nine sack rampage on opening day
01:01:17and has helped put the d back in denver the broncos aggressive new defense exactly what denver
01:01:24needed beefy comedy what are the different hearts mean uh that's how many heart attacks they attribute
01:01:30to the he'll make you smile but that's your fake smile no it is not and that's your high voice it's not
01:01:37he'll make you laugh unless you've been hit by lightning or something jeff foxworthy premieres monday at
01:01:42eight seven central on nbc well the injuries continue for jacksonville brian schwartz their
01:01:49leading tackler had 16 last week against the raiders joining that injury list replaced by tom mcmanis
01:01:58and as we resume sam gash with his fourth catch of the day for just short yardage davis and thomas
01:02:05combined to make the stop but sam gash has been a primary receiver look at this 11 first downs for
01:02:13the patriots just one for the jaguars the different team that we saw on opening day when they beat the
01:02:18pittsburgh steelers reminiscent of that day too if you remember the pittsburgh steelers had all their
01:02:23players going down with injuries today it's the jacksonville jaguars getting a lot of them second
01:02:27down and seven tom mcmatis out of boston college second year player has come on for brian schwartz they go to
01:02:34the draw curtis martin broke a tackle able to work his way to the eight yard line and tony brackens
01:02:41with the stop we're just under six minutes to go now in this second quarter penalty marker is down
01:02:48and a very frustrated head coach tom cufflin
01:02:52five yard penalty automatic first down well that is called on john yurkovich the right defensive tackle
01:03:05and the frustration continues when certain parts of your game start to fall down the other parts
01:03:11sometimes overcompensate they try to overcompensate and you get those you get uh right here is yurkovich
01:03:19watch you coming up the hand is in the chest right there and then it just slides up really if it
01:03:26half the distance from the end of the run as larry never explained it right there it's half the
01:03:32distance uh to the goal line however the hand can go to the face if it's pulled away quickly they don't
01:03:37call that because they understand there's a lot of hand action a lot of jocelyn going on but when you
01:03:41leave it in there and continue to push and that head rocks back they're going to call it every time
01:03:46and it sets it to a first and goal down at the four yard line patriots running for another score
01:03:55the handoff to mark going wide and he is in for the touchdown
01:03:59and for the new england patriots this one taking on the look of last week against the arizona cardinals
01:04:14as they now
01:04:19extend the lead a four yard touchdown run by martin it's interesting to listen to the crowd when they
01:04:26ran a draw a minute ago there was a lot of grumbling what a bad play didn't gain any yards
01:04:30this one scores a touchdown a tremendous call in the view of the fans and here is military
01:04:37and he is able to pop it through actually uh pats don't get that much applause around the league
01:04:47so it is now a 19 nothing new england lead over jacksonville
01:04:53sweep is to the left hardy has contained issues and is just not able to keep everybody in place right
01:05:01there that's pure speed really bouncing outside that play was designed to go up inside and uh bounce
01:05:08outside because of the hole watch everything get clogged up inside right here and the ball is just
01:05:13going to bounce right outside after he baits everyone in everyone all everybody committed inside
01:05:20and then he bounces outside at his pure speed from that point on
01:05:23eight plays 36 yards as the patriots take advantage of the fumble fourth touchdown of the season for
01:05:33martin he had a career-high three last week against arizona now the last six quarters go back to
01:05:41last week's 31 nothing win over the cardinals new england has outscored the opposition 50 to nothing
01:05:49and those woes continue for jacksonville right here they're catching a team that is getting hot in
01:05:57the new england patriots 31 and nothing last week and they're picking up right where they left off
01:06:02other than the missed extra point pretty good ball game for new england all right here's randy jordan
01:06:07who has speed and flanks come flying as jordan moves across the 25-yard line it's a 23-yard return
01:06:17by jordan who's back after sitting out last week with a pulled hamstring
01:06:24leads the afc and kick return average
01:06:27dave thomas trying to help larry members with his interpretation
01:06:40illegal block in the back above the waist a number 59 to the receiving team that penalty is refused
01:06:48we have a holding penalty a number 40. whoa that penalty would be accepted
01:06:53it gets worse and worse it gets worse the reason they accept the penalty uh the holding penalty is
01:06:59it occurred farther back downfield because the distance the penalty is going to be marked off
01:07:03from the point of the foul on a kickoff return so they took the one they gives it the uh the most yardage
01:07:09and the disadvantaged yardage for the new england or for the jacksonville jaguars seventh penalty
01:07:15against jacksonville new england hit with only one
01:07:18and a first and ten at the 16-yard line oh the pressure and brunel lost it
01:07:29that was going to be ruled a fumble not an incomplete pass even though his arm is moving forward
01:07:35in the opinion of uh referee larry nevers he was not in the passing motion completely unblocked
01:07:43yeah that is not a pass he tried to pull that one down and he couldn't get it down in time
01:07:51devin wyman 307 pounds coming right at you you can't pull him down he was the surprise of the preseason
01:07:59and a very strong impression and made a strong impression on mark brunel it's a second and 21
01:08:07back at the five yard line four and a half remaining in this first half trying to get out
01:08:12of a hole james stewart actually picks up some yardage
01:08:17so stewart the ball carrier let's check in with greg gumbel greg
01:08:22all right marv a guy who came out of the uh college ranks and into the pros the same time
01:08:27curtis martin did and that's terrell davis the nfl's leading rusher this is a 65-yard touchdown jaunt
01:08:33and it puts the denver broncos back on top of kansas city 14-10 three and a half to play in the
01:08:38first half mark all right thank you greg that run by stewart good for five yards and it's the first
01:08:45five yards on the ground but the jaguars have managed third down and 16. well he tried to set up a
01:08:54screen and succeeded with jimmy smith
01:08:56one-time dallas cowboy taken down by larry wiggum well short of a first down and a
01:09:05punting situation for the jaguars as brian barker checks back in
01:09:10and the word on a couple of the jaguar injuries
01:09:22blyde simmons with a knee problem that is expected he will return
01:09:26brian schwartz also a knee problem and will need x-rays megan let it bounce
01:09:33and a short punt by barker 3 10 left in this first half patriots 19 nothing over jacksonville
01:09:48four yarder and a penalty was called uh on the jaguars declined by the
01:09:53by the patriots now they accepted the goal five yard penalty re-kick all right so now they accept it it is
01:10:00instead that's almost in your face right there what you're saying is i want megan getting that
01:10:05ball under his arm one more time for a long return that was a very short kick
01:10:09good field position and they're going to accept that that uh penalty don't understand that one
01:10:14i would bar we talked to mark brunell yesterday and he i asked him do you feel like you're playing on
01:10:20an expansion team and he said he really did not the ball club had veterans on it didn't feel that way but
01:10:25they're playing like an expansion team today he may reassess that evaluation yeah you asked him
01:10:31the question and he said well we're not at a point where we feel we have to take our lumps we're beyond
01:10:36that we don't have to take our lumps but they have been here in the first half here's where maybe a
01:10:45a history of a team if you had a history you'd start to lean on a little bit
01:10:51jacksonville doesn't have that and their frustration just compounds itself all right make it with the
01:10:57return that's what they wanted yes able to accelerate puts a move on inside the 30 inside the 20 and down he
01:11:05goes inside the 15 yard line run up three and called by bill parcels declining that bill or accepting the penalty making it cut again
01:11:16a 39 yard cut and a 39 yard return by megan who had a excellent day last week punt returning
01:11:24against the arizona cardinals dino hall the last man back was able to make the tackle you know we were
01:11:32confused of why they would accept the penalty that's the reason right there last week dave megan
01:11:38had a 36 27 17 yard return they wanted him to have a chance to do it one more time we just saw it
01:11:45so new england first down inside the 15 yard line with 255 remaining in this first half
01:11:53and a big hole for curtis martin
01:11:59and a linebacker tom mcmanus with the stop tom mcmanus played for tom compliment
01:12:06boston college excited about coming back here to play against the patriots in foxborough
01:12:14well clyde simmons is back went down with the knee earlier has two sacks
01:12:19in this first half sign as a free agent just prior to the start of the season one time eagle and cardinal
01:12:27had 11 sacks last year for arizona second down and five and a flag is is thrown you saw kevin hardy hesitate
01:12:36and then make the move 28 offense prior to the snap five yard penalty still second down well
01:12:43apparently hardy was was drawn off by curtis martin anytime they stop the play it's going to be
01:12:48against the offense you know paul brown used to say to me once you get the heel in a jaw don't
01:12:53stop to reset it and that's part of what just took place when they accepted the penalty took the re-punt
01:12:59they feel like they've got jacksonville really running downhill right now
01:13:03it is a second and ten at the 14. now make it on the field getting a little bit of a
01:13:15conversation from bill parcells as we come on to the two-minute warning
01:13:19we'll be back here in foxborough in a moment
01:13:28everywhere we go on the nfl trail we run into former assistant coaches of sam weish
01:13:34in a frickin crack that's crack on the right were these guys with you in tampa bay or or
01:13:38cincinnati i carried it with me two tables second down and and ten soft pass attempted
01:13:46terry glenn not able to unleash involved with dave thomas coming up the domino's pizza nfl on nbc
01:13:53halftime report greg gumbel chris collinsworth and mike dicker with all the scores and highlights of
01:13:59today's action around the league and chris will be talking with the head coach of the cincinnati
01:14:04bengals david shula that'll be coming up at halftime fur down and 10 down to the 14-yard line it's the
01:14:14patriots 19 and the jaguars nothing
01:14:23let's so completing
01:14:27terry glenn stopped by the one-time patriot mickey washington for glenn it is his second catch
01:14:34it is short of the first down the crowd wants the patriots to go for it it's a fourth down
01:14:40and two remember last week against arizona it was at the 10-yard line fourth down and one
01:14:46bledsoe rolled to his right and made the the almost the landmark play for this season
01:14:53yes uh patriot players pointing at it in symbolic fashion it really has been it's been talked about
01:15:00around here as if it's the turning point in the season especially for that one player drew bledsoe
01:15:04well i think the the background there was some doubts about drew and i think he was able to
01:15:09show his his toughness one of those plays if things continue to go well for the patriots they will
01:15:14always point at it and say hey that was that was the turning point uh if not they'll forget about it
01:15:20well that's right and there there are benchmark times during the season for every team but that one
01:15:25clearly stands out in the minds not just to the fans around here but i think the players too they
01:15:29all talked about it and it was a play that uh showed not just a a quarterback standing back throwing
01:15:35the ball but willing to give up something he jumped over anias williams landed on his shoulder and his
01:15:40head bill parcells is going to uh bill has some great expressions that everybody tells people what to do
01:15:47this is like go out there and make the first down or i'm gonna come after you
01:15:50very similar expressions that we saw in the nbc broadcast booth short tenure from the jacksonville
01:16:00bill always speaks highly of you marv i know that yes it is a fourth down and two
01:16:07at the six yard line patriots for the double tight end as john burke has come on
01:16:15that is coach in motion
01:16:20and let's go try to draw the jaguars offside and not able to do it and it is a delay of game
01:16:26so that was the plan of bill parcells to pick up the first down by virtue of a penalty and now the
01:16:34field goal unit will come on three points right here gives them a 22 point spread bill watching this
01:16:44unfold oh it's not going to work all right never mind go for the field goal 20 uh with the mixed
01:16:49extra point earlier in the ball game this field goal if it's made we'll give them a 22 point lead
01:16:55that's three scores and some two-point conversions for jacksonville and it's a 29-yard attempt
01:17:01for minatari who is hit from 23 and from 30. and now and a 29-yard field goal a minute six remaining
01:17:13first half and the wing went up 22.
01:17:22true bledsoe has picked up where he left off last week and we just saw a vote of confidence
01:17:27from bill parcells uh in the favor of adam binatari on that last field goal it was fourth down in a yard
01:17:34and a half two yards bill has no problems about going for it on fourth downs done it many times
01:17:39and had success with it but to adam binatari it was in his eyes it was bill parcells saying i believe
01:17:46he'd make this go out there and get us the lead it puts us up by three plus touchdowns well he is three
01:17:51for three this afternoon with no question his job on the line and minatari able to pump uh the kick played
01:18:00by kendrick pullard and pullard across the 25-yard line a 26-yard return with one minute remaining
01:18:10in this first half adam binatari rookie from south dakota state division two school
01:18:22bro parcells in mentioning yesterday that minatari is what he categorizes as week to week
01:18:28said but he is rooting for him he'd rather not make a change may sound very basic to say obviously
01:18:34he's rooting for his kicker but he always likes adam minatari and he would like to stay with him
01:18:40i've been on those seven-day renewable contracts before i know how it feels and a first down pass
01:18:45from brunel completed to jimmy smith it is short of the first down smith met by the quarterback hitchcock
01:18:53and now they're in the hurry up block running 45 seconds to go on the half another impressive half
01:19:00for the new england patriots and it's batted down another deflection
01:19:06well parcells telling us the other day after uh practice that he thinks that brunel throws the ball
01:19:13a little too hard you'll notice a lot of balls popping all over the place tom coughlin was saying
01:19:18he has seen enough batted balls tip balls to last a lifetime well watch willy mcginnis right here he's
01:19:25mentioned the word spy he's not past rushing he's controlling the line of scrimmage but watching the
01:19:30quarterback and he reaches up and knocks it down sometimes you throw the ball so hard he doesn't
01:19:34make for an easy catch third and three
01:19:39now with the tie but he could not find a receiver
01:19:46and runs for the first down and more unable to get out of bounds
01:19:50at the new england 48 so that is a 19 yard run
01:19:54run by brunel it'll look good in terms of the the stats but they have not been able to run
01:20:04in the portion of the game where you want to set things up time is running out here in the
01:20:08the first half only 28 seconds to go and they're finally able to put some rushing yardage on the
01:20:15scoreboard well this is actually a very vulnerable time for jacksonville they've been three and out right
01:20:19here and given new england another chance at it before the half but now with 28 seconds left at least
01:20:24they're they've got field position
01:20:28we're now able to step up and completes for the first down on some more mccardell
01:20:34all down by ray and law and the clock is stopped a timeout is taken with 19 seconds to go
01:20:43in the half 15 yard pickup in the first catch of the day by mccardell but a flag is down as you see
01:20:49looks like it's going to be holding against jacksonville bringing that back but we'll take
01:20:55a look here after we hear from larry nemers uh what the penalty is holding offense number 71 10 yard
01:21:04penalty still first down well watch what mark brunel does right after he throws the ball watches the
01:21:11completion he turns immediately to the referee the official standing behind him to call timeout you'll see
01:21:18young players sometimes will run all the way down the field and try to find an official where the
01:21:21ball stopped he turns right there that's how you save a few seconds in a two-minute drill
01:21:27battle was called on tony vaselli it is a first and 20 back at the 42 yard line brunel able to
01:21:33hang on the pocket and again the ball was deflected terry ray got a piece of it it was intended for
01:21:42rising mark brunel is just not getting any depth this time he gets up under the center not in the
01:21:48shotgun let's see how tight he is to the line of scrimmage right there there's not a lot of
01:21:53of room for him to negotiate plus the pass rush is just getting to it the numbers on brunel six of 13
01:22:00only 59 yards and he was picked off once 16 seconds remaining of a half
01:22:12and brunel off the mark intended for the tight end pete mitchell out of boston college drawing the double
01:22:20coverage from malloy and wiggum you can almost feel mark brunel is a common trait for quarterbacks they get
01:22:27nervous and what they do is they squeeze the ball you can almost feel their wrists getting tight
01:22:31around that ball and what and as you're squeezing that ball see the longer he stays in the pocket the
01:22:36tighter it gets the tighter if you ever uh just sit in your living room right now squeeze your fist
01:22:41you'll feel the muscles tighten all the way up through your chest you yank the ball down you get a
01:22:45lot of them knocked down tipped and i can see folks all over all over up out of their seats squeezing fists
01:22:52side line pattern with time running down only five seconds left in the half andre ryzen with the
01:23:02catch brunel took another good hit looked like chris slade was able to get to the quarterback this just
01:23:08adds to what the quarterback is thinking about not only is he maybe in his mind not finding the
01:23:13receiver on time but every time he seems to let the ball go he's getting pounded this time chris
01:23:18slate comes in there and does the damage it is a fourth down and 14 so brian barker has come out to
01:23:25punt back at his 34 yard line those kind of hits hurt uh a little bit marv but they wear a flak jacket
01:23:35they just knocked the stunts a little bit those aren't going to cause many injuries
01:23:40and now the patriots calling for time that is their final timeout guess what's happening here they want to
01:23:46receive another punt get the ball in megat's hands remember bill told us he wanted that ball in his
01:23:51hands 15 to 18 times in the ball game i guess he's reached his quota yet but they they're just saying to
01:23:58the jacksonville team we want to receive another punt
01:24:05well dave maggot has had his way in the returning punts coming into today the jaguars had difficulty on
01:24:12kickoff coverage the punt coverage was okay but not the case here in the first half i think you're
01:24:19seeing a new england team that has hit stride here in week three really last week and again uh in in the
01:24:26week four they are just playing solid football confident football and they're pulling the right
01:24:33strings right now bill parcells though is keeping his expressions as varied as ever and now the jaguars have
01:24:41decided not to punt they'll just run it out why take a chance and uh give the ball back to megan with
01:24:48five seconds remaining and uh burnell scrambling around and will just fire one down field firing for
01:24:56the ends on a jump ball and it is caught touchdown on the deflection jimmy smith able to come up with the ball
01:25:07ball let's think back what just happened had new england not called timeout the clock would have run out
01:25:14and we'd be inside right now talking about the first half
01:25:20so that backfires on bill parcells with brunel just tossing one up into the end zone it's a 52 yard pass and
01:25:29jimmy smith in his fourth season out of jackson state the one-time dallas cowboy is able to come
01:25:36up with his second touchdown reception of the season you see all the hands going for it and smith
01:25:42able to follow the plight and very fortunate to come up with that ball it's a home shot you don't
01:25:48you know the odds are not very good but you take a chance and it came through for him that time you
01:25:53see the ball in the air that long nothing around it but dark skies and mike collis with the extra point
01:25:58with time running out in his first half here's another look at it everybody get in position
01:26:04defensive backs you see uh hitchcock tried to knock that ball down and that's really what they should
01:26:10be trying to do don't try to catch the ball and intercept it knock it straight down ball staying
01:26:14here long enough though for the touchdown and that is the longest touchdown pass in the career of mark
01:26:20brunnell 22 to 7 the score at the half
