01:55This is World News Tonight.
01:57Good evening.
01:58Thanks for joining us on this Saturday.
02:00I'm Whit Johnson.
02:01Several developing stories as we come on tonight.
02:03Including the latest tariff whiplash in the trade war.
02:06And a new CDC travel warning.
02:08But we begin with the dangerous air quality threat in the Midwest from the raging wildfires across Canada.
02:14These satellite images showing some of the 180 wildfires burning in Canada.
02:19Dozens are out of control.
02:21And a new severe weather threat for the South and the Plains after a deadly tornado already devastated parts of Kentucky.
02:28And this twister slamming into Athens, Tennessee on Friday afternoon.
02:32At least five people injured.
02:34Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station WABC.
02:38And Danny, let's start with the air quality alerts and where we'll see the biggest impact.
02:43With massive amounts of smoke from Canadian wildfires continue to spill south into the upper Midwest this weekend.
02:49Today, the worst of the smoke over the Dakotas into Minnesota where an air quality alert is still in effect for sensitive groups.
02:55Tomorrow, another plume of smoke pushes south, focusing from Minnesota to Missouri.
02:59We're also watching a new severe weather threat in the Southern Plains.
03:02Tonight, much of Oklahoma in the bullseye with strong storms unfolding into the night.
03:06Tomorrow, the threat shifts south into Texas with damaging wind, large hail and isolated tornadoes possible.
03:11The system that brought the severe weather to the East Coast slowly clearing out.
03:15Scattered showers and storms move through the Northeast tonight.
03:17But big changes are on the way after a long stretch of unsettled weather.
03:21The heat in the West finally makes its way east next week.
03:24Witt?
03:24All right, Danny, thank you.
03:25Now to the latest in the trade war.
03:28The European Union preparing countermeasures after President Trump doubled tariffs on steel imports to 50 percent.
03:35An EU spokesperson saying the president's move, quote, adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs.
03:42And tonight, tensions escalating again with China.
03:45Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selina Way.
03:51Tonight, global backlash after President Trump vows to double tariffs on foreign steel during a rally at a steel mill in Pittsburgh.
03:59We're bringing it up from 25 percent.
04:03We're doubling it to 50 percent.
04:05That means that nobody's going to be able to steal your industry.
04:09The European Commission reportedly slamming the move, saying they strongly regret the increase because it undermines ongoing efforts to negotiate a trade deal warning of countermeasures.
04:20The United Steelworkers Union in Canada blasted the tariffs as a direct attack on Canadian jobs, saying it would completely shut us out of the U.S. market and called for an immediate and forceful response from the Canadian government.
04:33These new tariff promises come after a week of legal back and forth.
04:37On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of International Trade brought the trade war to a screeching halt, ruling Trump had exceeded his presidential powers because only Congress can levy tariffs.
04:48But a day later, another reversal, at least for now, when an appeals court ruled the tariffs could continue as the appeals process plays out.
04:56All of this amid escalating tensions with China, which Trump initially tariffed at a staggering 145 percent, before the two countries struck a deal to lower levies during trade talks.
05:07The administration now acknowledging talks have stalled.
05:10The path forward, unclear.
05:13I believe that we will be having more talks with them in the next few weeks.
05:19And I believe we may at some point have a call between the president and party chair Xi.
05:27And with this legal battle around tariffs is expected to end up in the Supreme Court, the president claims this is judicial overreach and that it harms his agenda and his ability to negotiate with other countries.
05:38But meanwhile, American businesses and consumers are caught up in the middle of all of this, Whit.
05:43And Selena, there's also some breaking news coming out of the White House about a NASA nominee.
05:48Yeah, Whit, that's right.
05:49Tonight, the White House is announcing that they've just withdrawn Jared Isaac Min's nomination just days before his scheduled confirmation votes in the Senate.
05:58The White House says they'll announce a replacement soon.
06:00And it's essential that this person is in complete alignment with the president's agenda.
06:05Whit?
06:05Selena Wang for us tonight.
06:07And tune in to this week.
06:09Tomorrow morning, George Stephanopoulos speaks with top White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett about the legal battles facing the Trump administration's sweeping tariffs.
06:18Next tonight, President Trump also facing scrutiny over a flurry of pardons.
06:22At least one Democratic congressman is accusing the White House of doling out pardons as favors.
06:27This week, Trump pardoned a popular rapper and reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley.
06:34ABC's Perry Russom is in Washington tonight.
06:36Tonight, Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin accusing the Trump administration of giving pardons as favors to President Trump's loyal political followers and most generous donors.
06:46In a letter to pardon attorney Ed Martin, Raskin says he wants to know the formal criteria and process of evaluating pardon applications.
06:53Raskin says those criteria appear to include showing absolute personal and political loyalty to President Trump.
06:59The congressman pointing to the pardons and commutations given to January 6th defendants, many of them convicted of perpetrating violence against law enforcement during the Capitol riot.
07:08And Julie and Todd Chrisley, reality TV personalities who served two and a half years in federal prison after being convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion.
07:16Thank God for a president like Donald J. Trump.
07:19The couple's daughter, Savannah, fiercely lobbying for her parents at the Republican National Convention last year.
07:24Due to our public profile and conservative beliefs, they accused my parents of fraud.
07:32According to the Trump administration, other than the nearly 1,600 January 6th defendants who received pardons or commutations, Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 60 people since retaking office in January.
07:44When asked, Trump left open the possibility of pardoning Sean Diddy Combs if he's convicted.
07:49I haven't seen him. I haven't spoken to him in years.
07:51The music mogul on trial in New York City accused of sex trafficking and racketeering.
07:56Combs pleading not guilty.
07:57If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don't like me, it wouldn't have any impact on me.
08:04And with the White House responding tonight, calling Congressman Raskin a career blowhard with zero credibility.
08:10And this is not the first partisan battle over pardons.
08:13Back in January, Republicans were upset with President Biden when he pardoned his son Hunter just hours before leaving office.
08:19Hunter was waiting to be sentenced on felony charges.
08:22Whit.
08:22Perry Russom, thank you.
08:24Tonight, the CDC is stepping up the warning about measles just as the summer travel season kicks into high gear,
08:30urging travelers to take precautions because measles cases are rising in many countries around the world.
08:36Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.
08:39Tonight, as the busy summer travel season takes off, a fresh warning from the CDC.
08:45The agency now says measles remains an ongoing global threat and more international travelers are getting infected.
08:51They're also urging all international travelers to ensure they're fully vaccinated against measles before their trip.
08:57Just this week, 42 new cases reported nationwide, bringing the total to more than 1,000 across 32 states,
09:05mostly among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.
09:09In Colorado, officials confirming the state's second outbreak of the year after three passengers on a Turkish Airlines flight tested positive,
09:18including one fully vaccinated adult.
09:21Health officials say while breakthrough cases among those vaccinated are rare,
09:25measles is extremely contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours.
09:30Measles is one of the most infectious viruses that we know.
09:33Make sure that you're vaccinated and your risk for measles goes way down.
09:36And as the CDC grapples with a growing number of measles cases,
09:40the agency quietly revising its COVID vaccine guidance just days after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
09:48said vaccines would no longer be recommended for healthy children and pregnant women.
09:53Tonight, the CDC says all children may receive the shot with guidance from their doctor,
09:58softening earlier language that had strongly recommended vaccination for everyone over six months of age.
10:04Pregnant women now left with no recommendation on whether to vaccinate.
10:09And tonight, medical groups we spoke with emphasize the science and benefit of these vaccines hasn't changed,
10:13but they worry the shifting messaging from federal officials could leave some patients confused.
10:19Whit?
10:19Morgan Norwood, thank you.
10:21Now to the urgent search for suspects.
10:23After seven teenagers were injured in what police are calling a drive-by shooting overnight in Chicago,
10:29authorities say police were trying to disperse a large group of people when someone fired shots into the crowd.
10:35Here's ABC's Aika Jachi.
10:37Tonight, a drive-by shooting in Chicago has left seven teenagers injured.
10:43Authorities are now investigating.
10:45They have several people shot over there and there's a crowd now.
10:47Officers were trying to disperse a large group of people in front of St. Sabina Church around 1.55 a.m., according to police.
10:58Authorities say a vehicle driving by opened fire into the crowd, that car immediately fleeing the scene.
11:04Police say an 18-year-old was critically injured with gunshot wounds to the leg and chest.
11:09The other victims, with injuries to their legs, arms, back, or buttocks, are expected to recover.
11:15Father Michael Flager, an anti-violence activist in Chicago, says the violence in their neighborhood is personal.
11:22We worked too hard in this area for somebody to come in here and shoot up a bunch of kids.
11:30So, yeah, this is personal to me.
11:33All seven were hospitalized. One is in serious condition.
11:37Father Flager is offering $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest.
11:42Hi, Kajachi. Thank you.
11:44Overseas now in Hamas pushing back against the latest ceasefire proposal from the U.S., backed by Israel.
11:50It comes as Israel launches daily assaults into Gaza amid starvation and growing desperation.
11:57A top U.S. negotiator calling the latest demands from Hamas completely unacceptable.
12:02ABC's chief foreign correspondent Ian Pannell is in Tel Aviv.
12:05Tonight, hopes for a breakthrough ceasefire in Gaza fading.
12:12The U.S. envoy to the Middle East calling a proposal by Hamas totally unacceptable.
12:17The militants pushing back against a ceasefire and hostage deal first proposed by President Trump and backed by Israel.
12:26The original plan would involve a 60-day ceasefire and the release of some hostages.
12:31In exchange, Israel would release some Palestinian prisoners, withdraw its forces to a buffer zone and allow more aid in.
12:37Hamas saying it wants a permanent ceasefire, a complete Israeli withdrawal and the continuous flow of humanitarian aid.
12:45But tonight, the U.S. rejecting Hamas's counter, saying Hamas should accept the framework proposal we put forward as the basis for proximity talks.
12:54On the ground, Israel pounding Gaza once again.
12:59It's launched almost daily attacks since it broke the last ceasefire in mid-March.
13:05Netanyahu's government insisting it's targeting terrorist infrastructure.
13:10The death and desperation for food there only growing.
13:15And for now, there's no end in sight to the suffering.
13:18With Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also calling the Hamas response a rejection.
13:23And tonight, Israeli forces urging a large-scale evacuation of parts of southern Gaza amid fears of another night of heavy bombing.
13:32Wits.
13:32Ian Pannell in Israel again tonight. Thank you.
13:35Now to the deadly and devastating flooding in Nigeria.
13:38More than 150 people have died, and that toll is expected to climb.
13:43Thousands have been displaced.
13:45The flooding has been especially deadly in a farming region.
13:48Back here in the U.S. in a dramatic rescue of a hiker trapped for three hours under a 700-pound boulder in Alaska.
13:56His wife, a former state trooper, helping to save his life.
14:00Here's ABC's Melissa Adan.
14:03Tonight, a terrifying ordeal after a 61-year-old hiker was trapped under a 700-pound boulder for three hours.
14:10Cal Morris was hiking near a glacier south of Anchorage with his wife over Memorial Day weekend, when suddenly the rocky terrain slid out from under him.
14:20I ended up face down in the water, and the boulder that pinned me rolled down and rolled on top of me.
14:27And there was a space to keep me from being just completely crushed flat.
14:30His wife, Jo Roop, a retired Alaska state trooper, holding her husband's head above the rising glacial waters, then rushing to get cell signal to call for help.
14:40Somehow, I've got to figure out the best way to save his life.
14:45The Seward Fire Department and a private helicopter company jumping in to save Morris.
14:50Crews using airbags, ropes, and brute force to lift the boulder off Morris.
14:55It took everybody and God to save him.
15:01Morris was found face down on that creek, hypothermic and in and out of consciousness.
15:06However, he is expected to make a full recovery.
15:08Wow, what a story.
15:10Melissa, thank you.
15:11Now to the NBA playoffs and the big battle tonight.
15:14The Indiana Pacers fighting to punch their ticket to the finals.
15:18Ryan Field from our New York station WABC joins us from Indianapolis.
15:22And Ryan, it's win or go home for the Knicks.
15:25With this is the proverbial calm before the storm here at Cambridge Fieldhouse in what will surely be the biggest game of the season for both of these teams.
15:33Make no mistake about that.
15:35The Knicks needing a win tonight to force a game seven back in New York Monday night.
15:40And that's a proposition the Pacers want no part of that you can be sure of.
15:44Indiana needing just one more win to punch its ticket to the NBA finals for the first time in 25 years.
15:50The question is, which Pacers team will show up?
15:54Will it be the one who scored 130 points in game four or the one who was held to just 94 points in game five, which was the Pacers lowest scoring output since early February?
16:05For the Knicks, it's simple.
16:06They need to limit turnovers and get big games from Jalen Brunson and Carl Anthony Towns.
16:11That's been their recipe for success in these playoffs as they're looking to become just the fifth team in NBA history to win a series this late in the postseason after trailing three games to one.
16:23We're expecting this to be the best game of the series.
16:26And we do know this much.
16:27The winner will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in game one of the NBA finals Thursday night right here on ABC.
16:35That's all on the line tonight.
16:37We'll be watching.
16:38Ryan, thank you.
16:39There's still much more ahead on World News Tonight this Saturday.
16:42A salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers expands.
16:45We'll have the latest.
16:46And 14 million bees set loose after a trailer overturns in Washington state.
16:51An update on the operation to recover them.
16:54Stay with us.
16:57Next tonight, first responders on the scene of a deadly house explosion outside Kansas City, Missouri.
17:03Authorities say gas was not the cause.
17:05At least one person was killed.
17:07The blast leveling the single-family home.
17:09Crews evacuating nearby buildings as a precaution.
17:13Well, the hunt is over for 14 million escaped bees in Washington state.
17:17A tractor trailer carrying tons of hives crashing in rural Whatcom County.
17:22Several first responders were stung.
17:24Officials are now reopening the road to traffic and thanking everyone, including the beekeepers, who helped in the operation.
17:31Still ahead, the growing salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers.
17:37To the index now, the multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers is expanding.
17:4345 people now infected across 18 states, according to the FDA.
17:47The cucumbers are from Bednar growers and distributed to restaurants and food producers.
17:53Tributes tonight for Emmy Award-winning actor Valerie Mahaffey, best known for her roles in Northern Exposure, Big Sky, and Desperate Housewives.
18:02She began her career on the stage and continued to appear on Broadway and regional productions.
18:07Valerie Mahaffey was 71.
18:09When we come back, the history-making baseball team, they aren't just good, they're perfect.
18:18Finally tonight, baseball perfection.
18:21A winning streak never seen before in college baseball.
18:26Perfection wears purple in Lewiston, Idaho.
18:30Overnight, the Louisiana State University Shreveport Pilots winning the first NAIA National World Series championship in school history.
18:38The Pilots coming back from four runs behind to beat Southeastern University 13-7.
18:46That win capping off an already historic perfect season.
18:50On Thursday night, the Pilots secured their 58th win in a row.
18:54Zero losses.
18:551-1 pitch, bounded up the middle, crossed the diamond, a stretch at first.
19:00The longest winning streak for any four-year college baseball program at all levels.
19:05Their coach of six years, proud of the remarkable accomplishment.
19:11It's awesome.
19:11It's the first national title appearance and the first national title in school history.
19:17And the Pilots' athletics department summing it up this way on social media.
19:2159-0.
19:23Perfection resides in Shreveport.
19:2559-0 is an unreal feeling.
19:27I've got goosebumps just thinking about it.
19:29Unbelievable.
19:29I mean, I've obviously never experienced anything like this, and it's been a crazy ride.
19:33I don't even have words.
19:35Don't have words.
19:36Way to go, Pilots.
19:38Congratulations.
