00:00I spy Tim Welsh over at the bar.
00:02You want to come grab a seat?
00:03We'll talk some hoops with former Providence head coach Tim Welsh.
00:06Let's give him a nice little round of applause.
00:09I like it.
00:10High noon on Jones and Keefe.
00:13Not his first time here on the program.
00:16But we do expect a lot of changes out of the Celtics.
00:18We figure it would be a good time to talk some NBA with a guy who knows basketball, unlike us.
00:23We just pretend like we know what we're talking about.
00:25So that's where we're at.
00:27Is he all set up over there?
00:28You're good?
00:28You can hear us?
00:29Loud and clear.
00:30Love it.
00:30Good.
00:31Welcome to the program.
00:32You've been here before, Tim?
00:34I have never been here.
00:35You never came here.
00:35Can we turn this down?
00:37Oh, yeah.
00:38First time with a headset on.
00:40We actually witnessed a rehearsal for a wedding out here on the day.
00:43Okay.
00:44Let's stop.
00:45For a second, before we get going, I came bearing gifts.
00:48How about this?
00:49What?
00:50You come down to my turf.
00:51Yeah.
00:51Coming to my home.
00:52Yeah.
00:53It's the only reason we had you on.
00:54So, yeah.
00:54This is good for the gifts.
00:55First, it's multidimensional reasons why.
00:59Okay.
00:59First, you know, I know the whole City Connect deal with you, Rich.
01:02Yeah.
01:03It's not going great.
01:04You know, and I heard Sam Kennedy say, we're going to vet some of your takes.
01:09Yeah.
01:09I do remember.
01:10You know, I told Adam this.
01:12I told you this.
01:12I'm a big fan.
01:13So, I do remember some of the John Farrell stuff.
01:15Yeah.
01:16It probably wasn't the best.
01:17Yeah.
01:17I really did.
01:17I took notes.
01:18Yeah.
01:18Yeah.
01:19I did take notes.
01:20So, Peter and I, on Sundays, we can grind a little bit.
01:22Okay.
01:23So, I came with you first.
01:24Excellent.
01:25Yeah.
01:25Let's take a look at what this is.
01:27Wow.
01:27Oh, I love it.
01:28How about this?
01:29The Tim Welsh Basketball Camp.
01:31Wow.
01:32Thank you very much.
01:32I know the Littles are a little young yet.
01:35How about that?
01:35I love it.
01:36You can send them down to the camp once they get, you know.
01:39I love it.
01:39They can tie their own sneakers.
01:41Yep.
01:41Yep.
01:41They're getting there.
01:42And we'll give them the Odyssey discount.
01:44I love it.
01:45Thank you very much.
01:45I like that.
01:46Of course.
01:46How about this?
01:46What is it?
01:47Same thing?
01:47Of course.
01:48Heck yeah.
01:49Well, that is very kind.
01:50That blue's going to pop.
01:51That is a good one.
01:51That's a nice looking track.
01:52Makes my eyes pop.
01:54That was excellent.
01:55You know, I went to, this is a former PC player, I went to the Dickey Simpkins basketball
01:59camp back in the day at, I don't want to spill your milk here.
02:03Salve Regina?
02:05I forgot where that was, but Dickey Simpkins had Grant Hill.
02:08Okay.
02:08He had Jawan Howard.
02:10Dickey had some camps around the area.
02:12And young Adam Jones, missing a lot of layups.
02:16That's what happened.
02:16He was a great guy.
02:17Still involved.
02:18He's out of Chicago.
02:19He does a lot of games on Fox.
02:20Oh, nice.
02:20He does a lot of the Providence games, actually.
02:22He's a regular analyst for Fox College Basketball.
02:25How about that?
02:26Yeah.
02:26How about that?
02:27Well, how are you guys doing?
02:28Everything good?
02:29Yeah.
02:29Good.
02:29Much better with lunch.
02:30We had a big night last night out and around, out and around.
02:33Hojo was fine.
02:34I had Jawan.
02:34Yes.
02:35Good.
02:35Yeah.
02:36I took a nice soak in the hot tub.
02:37Good.
02:37Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:38Good.
02:39Good.
02:39Good.
02:39Good.
02:39Good.
02:39Good.
02:39My Regeneration going on.
02:40It's all one big, great area.
02:41No, it's, you know, we're usually right over here at 22 Bowen or across the street at the
02:46Black Pearl.
02:47Yeah.
02:47But it's beautiful.
02:49Beautiful.
02:49Wonderful.
02:50Everything's great.
02:51It's great.
02:51Wonderful.
02:51Wonderful spot.
02:51We're about 20 minutes from here, so it's nice to come down and see you guys.
02:55Thanks for having us.
02:56Of course.
02:56We were watching a little bit of the NBA last night, Eastern Conference Final.
03:01You did a lot of Halliburton games, right?
03:03You were talking to this?
03:04Yeah.
03:04When he was at Iowa State?
03:05Mostly my league the last 10 years at ESPN is the Big 12.
03:10So I did a lot of Iowa State games both his years.
03:13I think he was there two years.
03:14Yep.
03:14That sounds right.
03:15And kind of unheralded when he got there.
03:17He had to hitch in his shot and, you know, ugly at times.
03:21He had to be wide.
03:21It was almost a set shot when he first got there.
03:24And, yeah, I mean, I always loved him.
03:26I always loved him.
03:27Why do you think he's polarizing?
03:28Like his peers voted him the most overrated player in the league.
03:32Why do you think he is so polarizing?
03:34I don't get it.
03:35I mean, a lot of things have changed over the years.
03:38And, of course, you know, when you become a star, things change a little bit.
03:42I still think he's pretty grounded.
03:44The one thing I was really surprised about was his dad in the end of the Milwaukee Series
03:48because I had met his parents.
03:49His parents used to come to every game.
03:51They lived in Wisconsin.
03:52They're still going to games.
03:53Well, when they're allowed.
03:54When they're allowed.
03:54Yeah, that's true.
03:55But in college, I mean, you know, really that's a rarity.
03:58When you live in Wisconsin, you play in Ames, Iowa.
04:00I mean, not an easy place to get to.
04:01So, very nice parents.
04:04Very grounded kid, too.
04:05I mean, everybody loved him at Iowa State.
04:07Teammates, players, coaches, administrators.
04:10You know, just the nicest guy in the world.
04:11And I think he still is.
04:13I think I heard him last night.
04:14I mean, he can get a little over the top here after the wins.
04:16The chokes thing, I was a little surprised at.
04:18But, you know, he's.
04:19If that would have been a game-winning shot, that would have been so awesome.
04:22Yeah.
04:22But they still had to go to overtime.
04:24He is beloved in Indiana.
04:26Yeah.
04:26He's in Indianapolis.
04:27And I do know Rick well.
04:28Rick and I actually, Rick Carlton and I grew up together.
04:31So, I've known Rick since I was 10.
04:32And Rick loves him.
04:33Rick absolutely loves him.
04:35He plays the game the way Rick likes it to be played.
04:39Yeah.
04:39You know, share the ball, push pace, get it up and down.
04:43That's one of the reasons they lost last night.
04:44They couldn't get out in transition.
04:46But, yeah, I don't know.
04:47I think he's just.
04:48He's right there, I think, as far as one of the top stars in the league.
04:52You know, maybe the Olympic team didn't play much.
04:54But that doesn't matter.
04:55He's still young.
04:56He's still young.
04:56And this could be his coming out party.
04:58But they still have some business to take care of.
05:00I was going to say, give the Knicks a chance or is this over?
05:02No.
05:03I give them a chance.
05:04I do.
05:05I mean, Scott Foster walks out there tomorrow night.
05:09We'll know what's going on.
05:10I mean, last night was a little rough, too.
05:12I mean, the Knicks were very physical defensively.
05:15I mean, their pickup points were very high.
05:17They pressed a little bit.
05:19Tibbs used his bench.
05:21Oh, my God.
05:21You know, I turned the game on in the middle of four.
05:24But beginning of the second quarter, and I'm like, looking at these guys, who are they?
05:28I didn't even know who they were.
05:3044.
05:31I had to look.
05:31I had to pull out my roster card.
05:33You know, we don't know every player in the NBA, you know.
05:36But I thought it was smart for him to do that last night.
05:40You know, you start the second quarter, and you've got Brunson on the bench, and he kind
05:44of flip-flopped Brunson in town, so he didn't have that two weak links out there on the floor
05:49defensively.
05:50I thought that was a good move for him.
05:52But, you know, in the take me to the top part of the game, finish it off third quarter
05:57is what you need to do, what they needed to do, and then Brunson just took over.
06:01What do you think the Celtics do this offseason?
06:04Last time we talked, they were trying to battle their way back in against the Knicks in the
06:09second round.
06:10They're out.
06:11They're eliminated.
06:11Tatum's now hurt.
06:13What would you do if you were Brad Stevens?
06:15Where would you start?
06:15Well, I don't know anything.
06:17I'm just looking from afar and talking to some people that I know were previous part of the
06:24ownership group and a minority in.
06:26And you can't be where they're going to be.
06:29I mean, Wick said this back to Greg Hill back in the spring.
06:33You just can't.
06:34You can't do it.
06:35These guys aren't going to do it.
06:36They're not going to deal with their hearts.
06:38They're going to deal with their business acumen.
06:41Yeah.
06:41And acumen.
06:42And, you know, the thing about them is I think they're going to come into a room and
06:46they're going to give Brad a number, say, get to this number and figure out a good
06:50basketball team.
06:51And where that leads, I don't think anybody knows.
06:54I think Brad's going to do the best to get the best quality back because he doesn't want
06:58to lose.
06:59He doesn't want to go into the tank.
07:00He doesn't want to go into the lottery.
07:02But I believe in him.
07:04I really believe in him.
07:05He's one of the smartest basketball guys I've ever been around.
07:07And he's level-headed.
07:10He's good at his job at an early age.
07:12I mean, right out of the gate, he was very good at doing what he's never done before.
07:16So, I have complete confidence he will do that.
07:19And I think they do, too.
07:20And that's what they'll say is, okay, here's the number, get to this number, and then figure
07:24out a good team.
07:25So, if it's Jalen Brown, Derek White, maybe whoever Brad Stevens can get in some of these
07:30other trades, what does that look like?
07:33Is that a team that's, to me, I think it's a playoff team.
07:36I mean, it's not a contending team, but it is, the expectation should at least still be
07:40like a winning season playoffs, right?
07:42Yeah, why not?
07:43Yeah.
07:43I mean, you look at Indiana, I mean, you know, can you match that as far as talent?
07:48I mean, I think so.
07:49I don't think you're that far away from that.
07:51Yeah, I don't either.
07:52So, right, 45-50 wins, get into the playoffs?
07:55Like, even scaling it back, you still have Jalen Brown.
07:58Yeah.
07:58So, yeah, I'm with you on that.
07:59I think that's roughly what they should be.
08:00Find some pieces that fit, that's all.
08:04You know, basketball still is a game of chemistry.
08:07Everybody says, you know, make, miss, and all this other stuff, but it's still chemistry.
08:10So, you look at Indiana, and when they're balanced, and Matherin scores, and Siakam gives you help,
08:15and they get help from their bench, and McConnell comes in and gives you minutes.
08:19I mean, you put the pieces together.
08:21And I think that's where Brad is really good, because he's a coach.
08:25He's a coach.
08:25That's why I think he put this team together.
08:27He put it together properly.
08:28And he knew the pieces with Smart and Time Lord and those guys.
08:34Yeah, it wasn't working.
08:35No, it didn't work.
08:36He knew that.
08:36He coached them.
08:37He knew it.
08:38Right.
08:38And he knows how to put a good team together.
08:41I mean, going back to his teams when he was a coach at Butler, it's like, who are these guys?
08:46But they all fit, and they were tough, and they shared the ball, and they all knew their roles.
08:51And the NBA isn't.
08:52We all know you've got to have stars on the court, but they will have stars.
08:55They'll at least have one with Jalen Brown.
08:56What do you think of Joe Mazzula now that we've seen him for three years?
08:59Because the first year, I felt like there was a lot of times where we'd be screaming about timeouts.
09:04We'd be screaming about certain fourth quarter lineup combinations that he would use.
09:09Last year, talking about, I guess, two years ago, really wasn't much of it.
09:12Like, they kind of cruised.
09:14They were great.
09:15They only lost one game in each round of the postseason or would sweep.
09:20Then now you have this year where there's a bunch of injuries.
09:22But I feel like some of the questions kind of crept up again with him.
09:26How do you sort of view the three years and where we're headed with Mazzula?
09:29I think that Joe's a very good young coach.
09:32I think he studies the game.
09:33He works hard.
09:36The players like him and respect him.
09:39That's a good combination.
09:41Obviously, you're going to be liked and respected.
09:43And I think both of those are in play.
09:45I also think that as a young coach, you've got to keep getting better.
09:49You know, I think back to even when we started.
09:52I was 34 as my first head coaching job.
09:54And then 10 years later, how much more I knew.
09:56You know, just from studying the game, talking to coaches.
10:00And Brad's built in right there to be his mentor.
10:04And I think back to Eric Spolstra.
10:07When he first started at Miami, he looked like he should be a lifeguard on South Beach.
10:13We were working together at the time.
10:14And I remember being super critical as Spolstra.
10:17And now, right, he's arguably the best coach in the league.
10:19And Pat Riley coached him up.
10:20I'm sure he did.
10:21I'm sure Pat Riley coached him up.
10:23And I'm sure Brad will keep coaching Joe up.
10:25And I think he's made huge improvements.
10:27And you can't just throw a good coach out the window because of a couple situations in the playoffs.
10:32You've got to stick with him, especially at a young age.
10:35And I always say, well, who are you going to get?
10:38Who's going to come in here and is Jason Tatum going to like and play for?
10:42And that's so important.
10:43And Joe has that part, I think, already solved.
10:45And he's got most of the basketball stuff solved.
10:48You know, all the threes, I think you've got to pare it back.
10:51Well, so this is what I was going to ask.
10:52So play style-wise, he has things to learn and things he has to improve as a head coach.
10:57It might go above the head coach.
10:59Like, I understand that might be more of an organizational philosophy.
11:02It might go all the way to Brad Stevens where they're launching these threes.
11:05But what can Joe do to scale that back?
11:09How do they scale it back?
11:10Because I agree with you.
11:10I think they need to.
11:11Yeah, I think you just have to have a balance.
11:13You have to.
11:14You know, I remember Brad saying the best shot is dunk or the best shot is a layup.
11:20But, you know, you also know that you have to play the three-ball game because that's part of the game now.
11:26And it's simple math.
11:27But there has to be balance.
11:29I think the Pacers are another great example.
11:31They're averaging, I think, 30, 31 threes a game.
11:33But they score 130 points, you know, because they're running.
11:37And you've got to build that into your program.
11:40I think with film watching and analyzing every game, what's a good shot, what's a bad shot, and put that into your players' heads.
11:47I don't remember.
11:48You know, everyone talks about the easy road last year.
11:50But I don't remember these threes just raining down.
11:54I don't know the exact numbers, what the average was a year ago.
11:56It's gone up every year.
11:58Yeah, it's gone up.
11:58So, I think, obviously, we know you've got to play that game.
12:02But there's got to be a balance.
12:04If there's not a balance, you're going to bag into the defense and put too much reliance on that.
12:08And then you have some off nights and you're going to lose like they did.
12:12And, you know, you look at the Knicks.
12:14Last night they played good defense, but they're not a good defensive team.
12:16And when you're playing against a poor defensive team, you have to take advantage of those mismatches and those things out on the floor you can go and attack.
12:24And I think that's why Indiana has this lead in the series because they put Brunson in a position where he's had to guard and he's not a great offender.
12:32And then Towns as well.
12:33Do you think with Jalen Brown sort of being the centerpiece of the offense next year and not Tatum, maybe just by that fact the threes will come down?
12:41I feel like Brown is a little bit more of an attack player than Tatum.
12:45Yeah, I think you saw it in game five.
12:47I think you saw more of a balance.
12:49Just overall, not just balance of threes and twos, but balance of scoring, sharing the ball, more movement, kind of Indiana-like, where Indiana always has –
12:59listen, they go into their isoball too with Halliburton, but they also have a lot of cutting.
13:05They have a lot of spacing.
13:06The ball moves and the players move.
13:08And I still think basketball is basketball.
13:10And listen, Joe came up in a coach's family.
13:15He's a coach's son.
13:16He played for John Beeline.
13:18All they did was run motion.
13:20And Bob Huggins is an excellent coach.
13:22He knows the game.
13:23He's not going to sit there and say, okay, and be stuck in the mud.
13:27I think he thought this was the way to go.
13:29And the players, I think, really believed that this is how we're going to win.
13:33More than even Joe, I think probably if you sat him down in a dark room, he'd say, man, we probably shot too many in this series.
13:41So we're talking about Indiana.
13:42I think it's interesting because I don't view them as the most talented team.
13:46And so how are they on the cusp of getting to the NBA Finals?
13:49Maybe winning a championship, for all I know.
13:51You highlighted Carlisle, which, okay, let's say Missoula will add to the offense and they'll add more cutting to the offense and he's capable of doing that.
14:00Not that you're going to find a Tyrese Halliburton this offseason, but I know Wiggy's been big on this.
14:05Do you think they need a point, like a more pure point guard?
14:08Like someone who can run an offense?
14:10Because right now Tatum runs a lot of it.
14:13I know he won't do that next year.
14:14Do you think they need a more traditional setup?
14:16Would that help them with not just bombing away, gunning threes?
14:20Yes.
14:21I think, well, Holiday is a point guard, but they didn't play him at the point.
14:24He kind of played off the ball.
14:26He's always been a point guard his whole career.
14:28But he's not the prototypical like you're talking about, Adam.
14:31They need a God Sham God is what I'm saying.
14:34That's what they need.
14:35They need a God Sham God.
14:37Go find a God Sham God.
14:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:38Exactly.
14:39Yeah, those guys are hard to find.
14:41You know, you look around the league, and it's a speed game, too.
14:45And you look at Indiana, how many times does Halliburton get the ball right off the glass on his own?
14:51He rebounds the ball, pushes himself, and they get easy baskets.
14:55You know, they flood the floor, and they run to the rim.
14:59Speed point guard, a push point guard, a guy can get anywhere he wants to go off the bounce?
15:03Yes.
15:04Absolutely.
15:05If you can find one, I don't know where you find one.
15:07But, you know, Brad is good at that.
15:09Brad is good about finding those pieces that can fit in.
15:12And he doesn't have to be an all-star.
15:13Just somebody that can change the look of your offense and give you a little bit more balance.
15:18So you can get easier baskets more, you know, in transition.
15:22When Tatum brings the ball to the floor, you're not getting easy baskets.
15:25I mean, six, eight, six, nine.
15:26No, and it's slow.
15:27I mean, it's deliberate a lot.
15:29He will take the ball off the rim and push it sometimes, but it's typically deliberate and slow.
15:33Right.
15:33Yeah, and I think that's, to your point, that's a good way to play.
15:38I mean, look at Brunson.
15:39I mean, Brunson's a guy in New York, you know, it's like here.
15:43They're going to criticize you when you lose, and he doesn't share the ball enough, and he's got to get more people involved.
15:49But he puts pressure on the defense all the time, and if you do double him, he will give it up.
15:55And if not, he will push it himself in transition and give you that quick, fast look that you're looking for so you don't have to be over-relying on the three.
16:05Hey, before, well, I would talk, when we said we were coming on the show today, Courtney wanted me to ask you a question, and it was about Ed Cooley.
16:14Oh.
16:14He was saying, is it fair, kind of the response that Ed Cooley has gotten after leaving Providence and going to Georgia?
16:22Well, first of all, when BC grads send questions about the Friars, I'm always a little leery.
16:28No, I get it.
16:28I get it.
16:29No, no, I love BC.
16:30What is this?
16:30Well, I got a lot of meters of BC, guys.
16:32You know, BC's great.
16:34No, it's, we like, we love Bill O'Brien, matter of fact, the football coach there, since he's been there, I think he's done an unbelievable job.
16:42Listen, Eddie did a really, really great job at Providence.
16:46I mean, Hall of Fame type for, in the Big East.
16:51He came in, the program was not in good shape when he came in, and he turned it right around.
16:57He turned it right around, he brought enthusiasm, the building.
17:01We go to games now with my kids, and they can't wait to go back.
17:06You know, that's continued since Ed left.
17:09Sure.
17:09Because they sell out every game.
17:10You know, even when we were coaching, our best teams, you know, you're playing whoever, you know, Bemidji State in November, there's 4,000 people there.
17:21You go to those games now, there's 13,000 people there.
17:24They sell out every game.
17:26The students come.
17:27It's become a thing.
17:28And Ed created that.
17:29He really did.
17:30And the program, obviously, has been good back to the 70s when Joe Hassett was there, Dave Gavid, and Ernie D.
17:36It's been a great program.
17:37It's got tremendous tradition.
17:38But the fans over the years, and the students, it's a small school.
17:42It's only 3,600 students.
17:44It's hard to get those students, you know, off their iPads and come downtown and go to the games.
17:49But they all do.
17:49And Ed created that, helped create that.
17:51And he did a great job.
17:52And divorces are never easy.
17:55Right.
17:55They're never easy.
17:56All type of coaching situations, it's never easy or right or wrong way.
18:01There's no book or manual on how to leave a place.
18:05And maybe if he did it over, he'd maybe tweak a couple things that he'd change.
18:10But in the moment, you're so emotional about leaving a place you love, leaving a place you're from, to going somewhere where you want to go.
18:19And then on top of it, it's in the same league.
18:21Well, that's what I was going to say, too.
18:22Like, how much of it was just him leaving in general and how much of it was where he went?
18:25Both.
18:26Yeah.
18:26It was both.
18:27And, you know, the timing of it because the rumors started before the season ended.
18:31And, you know, but listen, I will tell you this.
18:35I don't know any coach that's not been contacted before the season's ended when other jobs are open.
18:41It happens all the time.
18:42It just leaked out.
18:43And sometimes it leaks out through the school or through the agents or through the search firms or whatever.
18:49I think over time, people will, and it's already trending that way, will appreciate what Ed did for the program.
18:55And I hope they will.
18:56And I know they will.
18:57And, you know, I felt bad for him that first year.
19:00Last year, you know, last year, I don't even recall.
19:02It wasn't that bad last year, I don't believe, or as bad as the first year.
19:05Not as bad as the first year, no.
19:06No, no.
19:07And then, you know, the students, as time goes on, won't even remember who the heck he is because the students there now don't know who Ed Cooley is.
19:14At least in a couple years when, you know, that class graduates.
19:17And I think the regular fan base, it's like anything else, you know, like when we left, you know, like, oh, you know, that guy.
19:25And now, as time goes on, well, coach, you're okay.
19:29You know, it's like anything else.
19:32It's like you guys know.
19:33And pro sports the same way.
19:34Every coach that leaves at the immediacy of it, it's like, oh, you know.
19:40And then when you come back over time, you understand what they did.
19:44Yeah.
19:44Where, before we let you go, where can the people hear you here in Providence with Meter?
19:49They can hear you tomorrow, right?
19:49Meter and the coach Sunday mornings.
19:51Oh, Sunday.
19:52It's 7 to 9.
19:53We're going to get you guys up early one day and have you on.
19:56Right.
19:57So, you know, don't make it after a road show.
19:58I'll tell you that.
19:59You've got young kids.
20:00I mean, come on.
20:01That's true.
20:01That is true.
20:02No, no.
20:03It's, you know, we're having fun with that.
20:05Meter's great.
20:05And we usually have good guests on.
20:07And, you know, Meter venting lately about the Red Sox.
20:10Oh, there's a lot to vent.
20:11I've got to put a stopgap in.
20:14And he goes on.
20:15He's been going on and on for years.
20:18And he just, he can, he goes deep into the minor league system.
20:22Oh, boy.
20:22Yeah.
20:22Oh, yeah.
20:23So, I go Roman Anthony deep.
20:24That's as deep as I know you.
20:25Well, I liked it.
20:26I heard you.
20:26I had you on, of course.
20:27And I heard, like, get in your car.
20:29Yeah.
20:29Back over to Worcester and let's get that up here.
20:31Well, that's on the agenda this week.
20:34The Red Sox have been given an ultimatum.
20:35That's on the agenda this week.
20:36I mean, come on.
20:37Tim, we appreciate it.
20:38Thanks for stopping by.
20:39All right.
20:39Anytime.
20:40All right.
20:40Thanks for having us.
20:40Great seeing you guys here.
20:41Thanks for the shirts.
20:42Wonderful shirts as well.
20:43Can't wait to display these things.
20:45It is Meter and the Coach on Sunday mornings, 1037 in Providence.
