02:29We knew we were going to come in last, but I didn't think the gap was going to be as big as it is.
02:35Yin and Gaz will start the third leg almost two whole days behind the race leaders
02:39and a challenging 26 hours behind their closest rivals, Caroline and Tom.
02:47Opening the book and seeing everyone's names in front of you was really quite demoralising.
02:53Our hearts just set with, oh, yeah, we are bad at this.
02:56Yeah, we are bad at this.
02:57We've got each other, it's all right.
03:12Nobody thought we'd get to second place, did they, on this leg?
03:15We'll plod along, we'll keep doing what we're doing.
03:18Hiya, mate.
03:20Brothers Brian and Melvin are the second team to check out.
03:23Thank you very much. Go on.
03:25Your third checkpoint is Shangri-La.
03:30That was the singlet from the 60s, Shangri-La.
03:32Do-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro-ro.
03:37No.
03:38No.
03:38No.
03:40Lying on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, over 10,000 feet above sea level, in the heart
03:47of the Hongduan mountain range, the third checkpoint, Shangri-La.
03:52For centuries, this frontier city was known as Jong-Dien, but in 2001, it was renamed after the fictional
04:02paradise, and a government bid to drive tourism.
04:05The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the rest.
04:11That's what I didn't want to see.
04:14Right, let's get off this darn island.
04:19This is the leg I was dreading from the start.
04:22It's important just to keep doing what we've been doing, but quicker.
04:28Yeah.
04:29To reach the third checkpoint, teams must journey through southwest China, climbing from the
04:34tropical coastline towards the foothills of the mighty Himalayas.
04:40They could head north through the untamed beauty of the Guizhou province and its newly built
04:46eco-cities.
04:47Because it's an elimination leg, we've got to be direct, haven't we?
04:50We've both agreed that.
04:51The direct route is west.
04:54Our teams could veer west, into Yunnan province, utilising the region's best connected transport
05:00hubs, but forced to travel alongside the millions of tourists who visit each year.
05:06So we do the overnighter, then you go and bang out the homestay.
05:10It's got to be that overnight travel, paid off on the second leg, so we're hoping it does
05:15a similar thing this time.
05:17Stuff the cost.
05:18We've got to be direct.
05:20It'll be nice to go outside now.
05:26It's quite warm, isn't it?
05:27Yeah, yeah.
05:28Oh, wow.
05:29Look at the sea.
05:32Oh!
05:33I'm going to get my sunglasses up.
05:35I do like being by water.
05:37After travelling the length of Hainan Island yesterday, Elizabeth and Letitia have caught an early
05:44ferry, sailing back across the Cheongzhou Strait to the mainland.
05:48I'm feeling so good today, but it is daunting to see elimination.
05:56People can catch up and they're not too far behind us.
05:59But we want to make the most of our time in China.
06:02I feel like we need to stick with the same strategy, home stay, accommodation, and continue to make memories together.
06:09We're approaching, I see a port there.
06:13As soon as you get off, we'll get on a bus.
06:16Once on the mainland, the sisters plan to forge a scenic route north, away from the tourist trail.
06:24Would you like one of these?
06:26Yes, please.
06:27Having left the checkpoint five and a half hours behind...
06:31Er, cardboard.
06:32It's like a hard powder.
06:34These were expired.
06:35March 2024.
06:36That's literally day after you turned 18.
06:41Finn and Sean Ed are en route to Heiko Port.
06:44If we head north, there's meant to be wildlife and nature, and we can also use the big transport hubs again.
06:51It's achievable.
06:52It is achievable if things go our way.
06:55Like, I really, really, really don't want to get eliminated.
06:58Yeah.
07:01We're definitely not city people.
07:03The amount of stress it was putting on us on the last leg, it was either me pushing his buttons or he was pushing mine.
07:09There is a crossing there thing.
07:11So that way.
07:12Oh.
07:13Crossing there.
07:14I think this leg is more of a priority to kind of keep that calmness.
07:19I feel like I'll always be in charge, to be honest, but communication is key.
07:24I do feel pressure to get off this island really quickly because we just need to gain some distance.
07:31It is beautiful.
07:32I'm feeling now.
07:35Do you think we'll get some kip on it?
07:36We might be able to, yeah.
07:37We'll get a leg room anyway.
07:38I'm going to take my shoes off.
07:39Yeah.
07:40I'm going to take mine when we get to the ferry.
07:43With elimination looming, Brian and Melvin are gaining crucial momentum aboard overnight transport.
07:49We've got to keep on going west now.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Their 11 hour journey will see them board and delight the ferry by bus, which then continues west, propelling them to the major transport hub of Nanning.
08:03But the good thing is, it's a non-stop journey.
08:06This is all in one package, isn't it?
08:08This is one go, isn't it?
08:09Yeah.
08:10I've always been a very competitive person.
08:12Not always won, not always succeeded, but always been extremely competitive.
08:18And I know Brian is as well.
08:20If we're going to do this, then we give it 100%.
08:22I think we're going to end up going further than anybody else today.
08:27Obviously, we'll soon see.
08:29As the brothers try to get ahead of the other teams...
08:32Time will tell.
08:34Nihau.
08:35Nihau.
08:36Hello.
08:37Hello.
08:38To check out, please.
08:39Leaving the checkpoint in fourth place...
08:41The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the race.
08:46Mother and son, Caroline and Tom.
08:49Wow.
08:50Oh, my God.
08:51That's going to add so much pressure.
08:53Nineteen hours after race leaders, Elizabeth and Leticia.
08:58Do you know where Shangri-La is?
09:01Here.
09:02That's Shangri-La, is it?
09:04Right.
09:05Good start.
09:06I was feeling gutted when I realised there was going to be an elimination.
09:10However, it won't stop me fighting like mad and going the fastest we possibly can.
09:15I would imagine off overnight for the longest journey we can.
09:19Okay.
09:20I feel nervous.
09:21The thought of getting eliminated is scary.
09:22Like, really scary.
09:24When the chips are down, that's when I come into my element.
09:28I'm feeling a little more ballsy, I think is how you would say it.
09:33Okay.
09:36Tickets.
09:37Yeah.
09:38Time is of the essence.
09:39So, our plan is to go northwest towards Nanning.
09:43We think that's the quickest.
09:44Perfect timing.
09:45Oh, here's the train.
09:48Like Brian and Melvin, they hope to take a direct overnight bus to Nanning to gain ground on the three teams in front of them.
09:57Hello, are we trying to go to Nanning?
09:59Tonight?
10:00Tomorrow.
10:01Tomorrow?
10:02Yes.
10:03Do you give up?
10:04No, we can't give up.
10:05Thomas, no.
10:06Any bus at all?
10:07Nothing.
10:08No bus.
10:09No.
10:10She...
10:11She...
10:12She's beautiful.
10:13I think I'll rely on mum just to cheer me up because mum's really good at that.
10:29She just has a way of making me feel like everything's okay.
10:33Aww.
10:34You'll be there soon.
10:36Okay?
10:38His mums somehow just know everything which is really annoying, but they just do that last bus for Nanning was five o'clock
10:45We must be able to get the ferry. It means we'd get off the island tonight
10:49Would you consider that should we pursue it I feel more comfortable with Thomas beside me I?
10:55Suppose because my role is as his mother. We did so well trying Thomas. Yeah
11:02Come on. I just can't do it. I know I know I'm gutted to
11:05Inertia will never lead to progress
11:10Okay, I don't want to come across as weak in front of him
11:13I always want to come across as confident and I know what I'm doing and he can trust me
11:20But that's not really true when I'm on my own
11:23If you get eliminated mom that will be the toughest we would swallow probably in my life
11:28Well, we have to do is stay in okay?
11:31We'll just get through it together. Yeah, I
11:33I think because your role as a mother and protector takes over from your actual
11:40Inner fears and you overcome them
11:42You don't think about things that would normally affect you. I just want to stay. I know and then so we just try our best anyway
11:49I don't know we're away in three hours. That's so long
11:55This is a bit of a setback. So it's annoying that things are not going to plan
12:01Waiting for their connection to the city of Leo Joe Elizabeth and Letitia
12:06Because we had a lead as well. Yeah. Oh
12:09Oh, it's the right place. Oh, it's the right place
12:14Also hoping to head north there has to be a train tonight surely
12:19hopefully oh
12:22My gosh, right try it. Try it. Try it
12:24No way is that them no
12:31We have called
12:35I was expecting to see someone you kept on speaking it to the universe look
12:41You speak it out it happens
12:43Oh
12:45We have done well. We have done. We have done so well. Oh, we have done. Wow. Oh, I thought I'm again on this one
12:53They're getting on this one for sure
12:55Hey, what six hours ahead of us. Yeah, we've made up six thousand. I didn't know this is amazing
13:01Oh look at the aerodynamic on that
13:04Oh
13:06Yeah, it is the hurdle
13:08Is this 15?
13:10Oh my gosh Finn and Sean Ed are in carriage 15. They're literally up there. I can see them
13:17It's the first place really to have a competition. Yeah, of course when you're in the lead
13:22If you're seeing anybody it's not a good sign because now we're not leading. I don't feel stressed
13:27I'm worried about you and I'm gonna join as much this leg. This just makes me go into race mode. Oh
13:35Great
13:56Could be worse places couldn't we we have that's the problem
14:01I think we've got a chance of winning it if we're still in it today
14:04Yeah, well, yeah, everybody's got a chance of winning
14:09That worked, didn't it?
14:13Having capitalized on overnight travel brian and melvin have made the hop from transport hub nanning to puja hay
14:21home to the indigenous ye people
14:24Obviously when you see pictures of china this is the kind of new
14:28What a place, eh?
14:29The only high rise is the hills
14:33beautiful hills
14:36In return for free accommodation they're assisting in the removal of dead lotus plants from the lake
14:42See? Technique, mate
14:46Yeah, well, this is easier
14:47Piece of piss
14:49Flick it up
14:50No, I missed that
14:52Yeah, it works every time your method, doesn't it?
14:54The difference of east china to now we're in western china
14:59It's quieter, pretty
15:02Peaceful
15:03You can hear the birds singing
15:05And the sun is just trying to pop out
15:07A bit nutty
15:13Cucumber
15:14No
15:15And I don't like cucumber
15:16I don't like cucumber
15:17You don't like cucumber
15:18No, I don't like cucumber
15:19Our relationship was always fun when we were young
15:22But we went off in two totally different trajectories and things just grew apart
15:28Now our relationship is distant and the friendship that we had we lost over the years
15:36Don't do that
15:39You know, you can't just turn around in the middle of a boat and half stand up
15:44Lotuses provide breeding grounds for wildlife to flourish
15:48And throws light upon the meaning of the name Pooja Hay
15:51Lake full of fish and shrimp
15:54When was the last time we went fishing?
15:56Oh
15:57No, I can't remember that
15:59I remember many times on a Sunday morning
16:02That was what?
16:03Two miles walk?
16:04Oh, it was more than that
16:06That's what we used to do
16:06Set the alarm, wasn't it?
16:07Four o'clock
16:08And then get up there for about six
16:11I think our mother wanted us to go to Sunday school
16:14Yeah
16:15And we didn't like it
16:16They wanted us out of the house on a Sunday
16:18Well, I think so
16:20When you think back on it now
16:23Mum was quite hard work
16:25We weren't a particularly loving family
16:28So, how old were you when you went to boarding school?
16:31Well, that's what I'm trying to remember
16:32It'd be ten or eleven, I should think
16:33We don't know to this day really why
16:37I was sent off to school
16:40And Melvin went to the secondary school
16:42And then joined the army
16:44I didn't feel as though I'm special, I'm privileged
16:48It was probably the opposite
16:50It was, why am I being sent away?
16:56I'll tell you what I couldn't understand
16:57And I still can't get my head around to it
16:59To this day
17:01I was never told that you were going to
17:03Go to private school or boarding school
17:05Really?
17:06Yeah, you just went
17:10It wasn't, oh, your brother's going there
17:12And this is that
17:13And that's happening
17:15It just happened
17:17The way it made me feel was
17:19Well, they must be looking at the way I'm turning out
17:21And they don't want Brian to turn out the way I'm looking
17:23So, we're going to send him over there
17:25They're taking my brother, probably my best friend at the time
17:27Yeah
17:28Away
17:28Right
17:29Right
17:30I was never told
17:31Did you miss me then?
17:32Oh yeah
17:34Did you?
17:34Of course I bloody did
17:37It's very difficult to talk about your relationships
17:40Your upbringing and everything else
17:41And it's something that we don't normally do
17:44I think this is quite nice in our latter years
17:46That we can
17:48We can reflect on this
17:49Talk about it
17:50This, the shared adventure
17:52This is crazy
17:54It is crazy
17:55Literally crazy
17:57I'd like to think that we can
17:59We can get rid of the ghosts
18:08What's in the bucket near you then?
18:10Just a bucket for the fish
18:11A bucket for the fish
18:12That's bloody optimistic, isn't it?
18:15That's a bird laughing at us
18:19800 kilometres behind
18:22That's a bit limp
18:23After missing the direct bus to Nanning
18:26Nanning?
18:27This bus is to Nanning
18:28Number 13
18:30Caroline and Tom are bus hopping city to city
18:33I think after yesterday
18:34I think after yesterday I felt we didn't succeed much
18:37This is a very important leg and there's a lot at stake
18:40We need to move towards the checkpoint fast
18:42630 kilometres north in Liuzhou
18:47Known for its green parks and sustainability initiatives
18:51What's the address?
18:52Oh wow
18:53Quad exhaust in the centre
18:54Oh wow
18:55Come on, concentrate please
18:57Finn and Seanard are on waste management
19:01Do I get gloves to do this?
19:08Working for local currency at the Singnau Chafu Salon
19:11Ew
19:13Oh look at that, that's a bum cleaner
19:16That's quite powerful
19:18Why didn't she tell me to use this instead of the hose?
19:20Yeah
19:20Yeah
19:22Yeah work smarter not harder, there we go
19:25Me and Finn are getting along fine to be fair
19:30I feel like because it's not been so stressful
19:33We've actually been all right
19:35What?
19:37You don't look happy
19:38I'm brushing around the rims of the toilet shards
19:41I offered to do the toilet
19:42But I mean she took you there
19:43So she clearly wants you to do it on me
19:45Oh hang on
19:50The team that arrives in fifth place will be in
19:52Oh great
19:53Back in Sanya
19:55Let's go
19:56Thank you very much
19:57Thank you
19:57Cheers
19:58Cheers
19:58Bye bye
19:59And 44 hours after the race leaders departed
20:02You've always been underdog
20:03100%
20:03Everyone's always bitten us off haven't they
20:05Exactly
20:05I think we catch them
20:06Yeah
20:06Yin and Gaz are the last team to leave the checkpoint
20:09Jump in Yin
20:10Me and Gaz have like a real inbuilt resilience
20:13Like right okay we're in fight mode
20:15Now we will give like the next leg our all
20:20We need to figure out what is going to be fast
20:23There is like a railway that goes all the way to come in
20:26Get an overnight if we can
20:28The motivation is just to try and race hard and fast
20:31Make quick decisions but the correct decisions
20:36I don't want to just rush make the wrong decision
20:38And we end up in Hong Kong
20:39Good you never know with us
20:44First they must secure a way to the mainland
20:49All right can you take the lead on this
20:51Yeah okay
20:52What we need to know is like what's the quickest way off the island
20:55Is it via the bus station or via the train
20:57Yeah okay
21:00So the relationship I have with Gaz now is is amazing
21:04Before I got any more questions
21:05I don't think I think that's it
21:07You could even ask how much roughly the price is if you wanted to
21:10I am so grateful that coming out of the marriage
21:14Where it wasn't pleasant that we managed to retain that relationship
21:18Do you speak English at all?
21:20No
21:22Do you speak English at all?
21:24With Gaz he probably goes in for like a softer approach
21:27He's just got a lovely friendly way about him
21:29He smiles and like you know he laughs
21:31Are you okay?
21:32Slowly
21:33Yeah
21:33Yeah sorry
21:35The last year has been a tough one for me
21:37It's definitely you've been there for me
21:42After the marriage breakup I started seeing someone new
21:45A new partner
21:48And he was amazing
21:50He was kind, generous
21:52He also had this wonderful sense of adventure
21:57And I thought my life was with him
22:00September last year he passed away very suddenly
22:05And I was devastated
22:09Just don't know how to deal with that
22:11You know no one tells you how one minute they're there
22:15The next minute they're gone forever
22:22My first concern was Yin
22:27She was on her own
22:27She was going through a really really tough period
22:30So I just said instantly come with me
22:32And you know within an hour she was moved in with me
22:35And she's been there ever since
22:37What you got me soldier
22:39When I moved over to Gaz's it was just such a relief
22:43And what more do you want from a friend really?
22:46The timings look good
22:47We could be in Nanning by tomorrow morning which would save us an immense amount of time
22:52That's the dream
22:53With him passing has made me really question why am I putting things off for another day?
23:00That is one of his legacies that I want to carry on living
23:04Go out and have an adventure
23:06Just do it
23:11Gonna cut it fine
23:12Oh you look sneaky
23:15Yin and Gaz are the third team to head for Nanning
23:18But are looking to catch up by train
23:20Hello
23:21Ni hao
23:23Where are you going?
23:24We want to go to Nanning
23:28What ticket can we get?
23:30You can go to Maoming
23:31Maoming
23:35Okay so we can go to
23:37Can we go to Mu Ming today?
23:41On a sleeper one?
23:43Perfect that's fine
23:44Well let's just book it and pray for a miracle
23:47Mu Ming isn't on here
23:48It's on the map right okay
23:49What she's saying is like there's a train that leaves in 16.48 to Maoming
23:53Wherever the hell that is
23:54Yeah
23:55It will arrive at 1.22am
23:57Yeah
23:58We can't get a direct route
23:59We can only go far to a place called Maoming or something like that
24:02Which is not even on the map
24:04I think that's probably our best option at this stage
24:08Oh we have to go down that way
24:10We know we need a miracle to stay in the game
24:14We're desperate to get off the island because the island
24:16Not only did it not want us to get on the island
24:18But now it doesn't seem to want us to leave the island
24:21Going to Maoming
24:23We'll be at least heading in the right direction
24:25Ah we love popcorn isn't it
24:29Yeah I do miss popcorn actually
24:30Oh gosh
24:31Lost one
24:38I'm loving this
24:38Look at that
24:39Letitia
24:39In Leo Joe
24:42Before their pre-booked sleeper train
24:45Elizabeth and Letitia have squeezed in an evening cruise
24:48On the Leo Jiang river
24:50It's like synchronised swimmers isn't it
24:53Yeah
24:53Yeah
24:54To see the world's largest floating musical fountain
24:57Oh people are impressed
24:59Oh because look how high it's going
25:01Look at the front
25:01Whoa
25:02There's such a strange former entertainer
25:07That's what I love about China
25:10Everything's a spectacle
25:12They go full out
25:14It's magical really
25:17Coming in now
25:24Gosh
25:25Ideally we would have had our bags
25:27On here already
25:29So we need 20 minutes to get to the hotel
25:3220 minutes to get to the station
25:33Oh my gosh
25:35We'll make it
25:36We're trying to get a taxi
25:41Can you see
25:42Yeah
25:43Yeah
25:43Yeah
25:43Yeah
25:44Yeah
25:44Yeah
25:45Okay
25:47Vienna hotel
25:51We need to go quickly
25:53Quick quick quick quick quick
25:54Okay
25:55He doesn't know
25:55Does he know
25:59It's a hotel
26:00Yeah
26:00But there's many chains
26:01These are all of them
26:02Oh
26:02Shit
26:06So what can we do
26:08I feel like we should just go
26:09Because we're far anyway
26:10At least we're on the move
26:11Do you know what I mean
26:12Okay fun
26:13Just choose one
26:14Do it
26:15Do what
26:15That's the furthest one
26:16Yeah furthest one
26:20We didn't think about there being a chain
26:24It didn't fly
26:25And I'm worried that we could miss our train
26:29It was already a rush
26:30This is the wrong hotel
26:31I doubt we'll make a train
26:33That looks really familiar
26:35I feel like it's here
26:36Is it
26:37Here for health
26:39It's here
26:39It's here
26:40Where
26:41It's here
26:41No it's not that
26:42No
26:42No
26:42It's not that
26:43For fuck's sake
26:45Yeah
26:46This is the one
26:47This is where
26:48Stop it
26:49It's not the right hotel
26:50Yeah it's the wrong one
26:52Shit
26:53Yeah
26:57Feeling very bummed right now
27:00I can't believe we missed the night train
27:03Now we're a day behind
27:04We've also spent money
27:06On that
27:07So that's money gone
27:08Um
27:09And we'll probably have to spend money again here for accommodation tonight
27:14So
27:15We need to get our bags and now think about accommodation for the night
27:21The sisters must wait until morning to continue their journey north
27:25Of all legs for this to happen
27:28It's the one you don't want it to happen you know
27:30This is such a big mishap it could cost us a lot
27:40Do we stand back or feel bad
27:41Everywhere is selling something to eat
27:44Yeah
27:46Nestled in the verdant hills of the yunnan province
27:49Funing county
27:51The area is a tapestry of ethnicities coexisting with different languages cultures
27:58And culinary traditions
28:01Seems a lot more open and green
28:04Calming i don't know it's really relaxing
28:07Oh fruits i love how they just sell in the back of these tuk tuk things
28:13How many do you want mama
28:16Four would do would be lovely if we can get four
28:18Yeah
28:21Down quite two wow two yen
28:29I know my money but i left it on the side of the chair in the hotel
28:32No you didn't
28:32I promise you unless you picked up i promised you i left the other side
28:35Um do you want me to run back
28:39I can't with this
28:40The cleaner will be there remember if they don't have it
28:42I know i know i know
28:44If we lose the money but we're bugging basically
28:47Sure sure thank you wow
28:51Oh it's not here
29:00I left the back of that chair oh no
29:06He went to switzerland on his own first and actually left his bag on the train
29:09What do i actually do when he was in south america
29:14He left his bag in the taxi with passport in it and everything
29:18Hi um in 609 no i i left a money boat
29:25I was hoping he'd be a bit more careful and would have learned by his mistakes
29:28It has to be here
29:31I'm really worried it would hugely affect us it was a lot of money
29:34He's a black with yen
29:39Oh
29:41Oh
29:43Oh
29:45Oh
29:47Oh
29:49Oh
29:51Oh
29:53Oh
29:55Oh
29:57Oh
29:59Oh
30:01Oh
30:09I was an idiot for leaving it
30:11A massive idiot and i will never do that again but we got it back as a lesson well learned
30:17Hi
30:20Found it
30:22Okay let's go right we need to get on we have to taxi now
30:25And it's on you now it's on me and how did you not remember it i don't know
30:32550 kilometers east
30:36We're already late we just wanted to get a train straight away elizabeth and letitia are also having money troubles
30:43I still love it here i just want to leave now
30:47Ni hao
30:48中国银行
30:49Yeah
30:50Err
30:51Yo
30:51Yo
30:51Yo
30:51Yo
30:51Gua
30:51Shashu
30:52Okay
30:52Thank you
30:54These past two days we spent way more than we expected to spend
31:02Before traveling to tonight's homestay in the remote outskirts of an shun
31:07They need to exchange pounds for yuan
31:09We can afford the lane's training
31:11But we can only afford that journey you'll end up arriving at our destination with no money
31:18Okay
31:20Oh here it is
31:22It does look shut though
31:25Let's go to the abc bank
31:26Yeah
31:27Where are you seeing the bank
31:29Is that blue thing there it's closed doesn't it look
31:32They're all closed basically
31:35I feel like we've had it quite smooth
31:38for the two legs
31:39And feels like you can easily just lose your first place isn't it just with a few mishaps
31:48After exhausting their options for changing money the sisters head to the train station they failed to reach last night
31:55Ready to spend their last yuan on tickets out of town
32:00We have got 12 yuan left on us literally equivalent to like one pound 30
32:07It's risky
32:09There's no point of us staying here so you might as well just be moving forward
32:15Hello
32:15Hi mate
32:16I'm worried about being eliminated from not having money now
32:19Whilst moving we're also like we're still on the race kind of
32:28Still in Phu Ning
32:30Our shop here
32:32We used to have you helping in the kitchen when you were little as well
32:35While waiting for their train to Kunming
32:38Caroline and tom are working a shift at miss lee's restaurant
32:41And do you remember having to sit on the naughty step?
32:43Yeah, I remember once I said the word bugger
32:45Oh, oh
32:46I remember that
32:47And what was the only word you were allowed to say?
32:49Golly gosh
32:49Golly gosh that was a really rude word
32:52Chopping fragrant laurento mushrooms for her signature hot pot
32:56Good
32:56I might not be very sharp
32:58Yeah, do it okay
32:59Just one of 800 varieties harvested across the region
33:04My first ever proper job was a kitchen porter
33:06It was one of those jobs that you do when you're young
33:09You know it's kind of taught you to work a little bit
33:10I think it was more probably the lesson that it was teaching me
33:13Rather than the actual job itself
33:14Learning how to hold a job down
33:16I think so
33:17I'm a labourer
33:17You know I have to lift heavy bags of cement and brick to my shoulder
33:21So it keeps you fit and it keeps you active
33:23I don't think I could do an office job
33:25Yeah, I'm just I'm hoping I find a thing I get really passionate about
33:29And do you feel under pressure from daddy and I to try and forge a career or anything?
33:33Well, no one wants to purposely let anybody down, do they?
33:36I don't wish anything for you apart from absolute health and happiness
33:41Did it ever bother you that I didn't finish GCSEs?
33:44I obviously would have preferred you to have had qualifications and a grounding age 16
33:49Yeah
33:49I'd say probably one of the hardest things I've dealt with is
33:53Probably getting kicked out of school
33:55Me and my friends started smoking a bit of weed at school thinking oh this is cool
34:00We got called into the office
34:02And from there we basically got kicked out of school
34:05I think you might just have been drifting
34:07Yeah
34:08What happens if I never find that thing because there are people who don't
34:11Never let fear of failure
34:13Prevent you from starting something
34:15It's a lot easier said than done
34:16I know and it's it's something I've suffered from yeah
34:19I'd hate to see you do the same
34:22I think perhaps he lost a sense of direction and he probably lost confidence as well
34:27That's another reason for us dreading the elimination
34:30It would be lovely if this race helped him discover more things about himself
34:35And I think that's just the best opportunity and I so hope we can make it
34:39Goizhou
34:43A province carved with deep gorges
34:47Meow villages and one of Asia's largest waterfalls
34:52Huang or sure
34:53we've not really been to this this kind of China I like it I'm enjoying the peace and the fresh air
35:01escaping the cities Finn and Sean Ed have made it to its heart Chiangling Park home to a thriving
35:11troop of macaque monkeys look at that little turtle oh cute hello the very different feel today look how
35:26high we've got this is so nice it's also a nice way for us to make memories that I'll last forever
35:33look at it it's beautiful I'm well aware that this race is gonna make or break us and I'm hoping it
35:43obviously it makes us because the next steps in our lives are such big steps oh there's monkey shred
35:51really wait yeah there's loads of them there oh look at that baby one don't go too quickly towards
35:58this is red oh that is so cute I want one God I've always wanted to marry young want to have kids
36:12young I'm hoping for engagement and marriage in the next five years with one child a stable income a
36:19house this is the wildlife I've been craving my childhood was like the best thing you could
36:27ever want family really matters to me because of how I've grown up they've got very red asses
36:34don't they they do trying to get the perfect bum shot my childhood was definitely a lot different
36:44compared to shreds oh wow this is actually well worth it look at that my dad left then it was just me my
36:54mum and my brother when your parents get divorced at a young age you don't necessarily know what's going
36:59on you can just think they're splitting up just one house another house kind of look for the positives
37:03I think two Christmases and then you grow up and you realize it's really not like that the idea of
37:12marriage doesn't scare me it's just I know things can go wrong just have to make sure it is definitely
37:19the right person do not want to be going home in the next few days rather be here with you so enjoying
37:26this I want more challenges to see if you are the one I want to be with I mean I don't really question
37:33it so I'm I'm pretty certain that you're the one I want to be with but I know it's it's not easy for you I
37:42mean obviously sometimes you do wonder like is our communication ever gonna be right I do think we've
37:50started to understand how to get further and actually succeed in the race and succeed together I think
37:58what is it it's a train I think a very loud train let's go time to get back into the race what's that
38:12is it a dog as Finn and Sean head to the station are you guys from UK we are from England taking part
38:21in a race okay a race a race yeah Brian and Melvin are traveling by train to Kunming the last transport
38:30hub before the checkpoint where's the train to Shangri-La is that from this station or the other one it's
38:36from the sent sentros central station so the plan is get off here we get a metro to central yeah we can
38:46catch a train to Shangri-La in the morning yeah that sounds like a plan what a bit of look me to you
38:53yeah it's brilliant excellent thank you very much and if any of this is wrong we'll come back
39:04we're like brothers similar haircuts yeah yeah
39:12on their long-haul train to Mau Ming moment I'm trying to fight is it that way or that way on the
39:20map Yen and Gaz need to locate their destination excuse me do you speak English a little a little
39:27ah I'm trying to find the moment on the map but it's not written down could you roughly show me where
39:35it is on the map if that's okay you think it's about there no mean on that line there yes oh shit yeah
39:45yeah oh sorry all right thank you very much thank you thank you right yes spoke to some young chap he
39:55showed me where we are where we're heading to on the map we're heading there okay it's a little bit
40:02concerned in that we've kind of almost heading the wrong way their earlier decision means they
40:09are heading 250 kilometers northeast in the opposite direction to the third checkpoint it's hard because
40:17it just seemed to be every time you talk to someone it's a different story we're fucked basically
40:23gods are against us does feel like that yeah it does feel a little bit we've been sinners in our
40:30past life do you think that's what it is let's give it a shot
40:35going into a rural area where pardon anybody it's not ideal out of local currency Elizabeth and
40:50Laetitia are on a train heading north to their planned homestay and do you know I'm sure she can
40:58we get cash there I don't have a kiss let me have a try okay thank you let me have a try okay how is he
41:12going to get cash I don't know where he's going where could he have gone where did he go what did
41:20he say let me just check let me try let me try oh he's coming back has he got anything on his hand
41:27over like oh my gosh I see a flash of red oh wow okay sorry sorry which is very emotional right now
41:45how much do you have 350 yeah 350 UN we can give you 40 yeah yeah literally a whole day this is all we
42:09we were able to get some money minutes what are the odds before getting stranded yeah but today we
42:22took a risk you know and it paid off it really paid off it's a good feeling back in the race
42:291100 kilometers from the checkpoint the sisters have made it to the remote where you end village
42:39staying in miss hers countryside home
42:49you can't you can't you can't you can't you can't eat now you can't eat now yeah wow it's a feast
42:57it's a feast don't don't be shy don't be shy don't be shy just say where where are you from
43:06you know yeah and when did you come here it's summer i don't like live in city i like
43:20countryside yeah the air is more fresh and and more free i want to find some new lifestyle
43:33mmm it's slow yeah slow lifestyle compared to the city yeah honestly if this doesn't make you fall
43:43in love with china i don't know what well the people here are just so hospitable they really extend
43:49their welcome and yeah they just share their love so openly our lead is pretty much gone i'm just more
43:59worried about being eliminated because sharing this journey with my sister i feel like we're just
44:04getting started to you know get to know each other and i want to continue on that journey
44:29i can't see anybody
44:33i'd be a bit gutted if i'm honest if i did see somebody now because i do think we've done all right
44:43could do with the train moving now couldn't i know we could come on move
44:48kunming a pivotal transport hub for all routes from southern china to the northwest part of yunnan province
44:58there we go the doors are shutting brian they've just shut the door
45:04right we're in as brian and melvin depart we're like winding their way 600 kilometers up the mountains
45:13to the third checkpoint a little bit anxious at the minute elizabeth and letitia are trying to pick up
45:21the pace after leaving their home stay this has been a very difficult long leg yeah quite possibly
45:30we've lost our lead we're just trying to stay in the game so we're not eliminated we're still gonna
45:36push right until the end shangri-la railways well i'm guessing this way because everybody's heading that
45:43way go go go go go go go go shangri-la sitting at an altitude nearly 4 000 meters above sea level
45:53dominating its skyline the ganden sumstilling monastery once home to 2 000 monks

54:36Oh, my God.
54:37Oh, my God.
54:38Oh, my God.
54:39Oh, my God.
54:40Oh, my God.
54:41Oh, my God.
54:42Oh, my God.
54:43Oh, my God.
54:45We're over the moon.
54:46Absolutely over the moon.
54:47This feels amazing.
54:48It feels like a weight has just been lifted off our shoulders.
54:52Absolutely.
54:53Wow.
54:54I'm happy we're, you know, we're not eliminated, but I'm a little bit gutted that we obviously
55:05couldn't be, you know, a little bit higher.
55:07We're still in the race.
55:08We're not going home.
55:09We absolutely scraped up.
55:11In the city of Maoming, Yin and Gaz's race has come to an end.
55:28Every time we turn, it seems to be a block against us.
55:31You know, it's China's trying to tell us something.
55:34Yeah.
55:35There have been some really, really lovely moments.
55:38No, it has.
55:39It's a bit raw now, but I do think as time goes on, we will look back at it and we will
55:46laugh about it.
55:47We were hoping it would make us stronger and I think it has.
55:49Ultimately, it's not the journey that was destined for us, I think.
55:54The race has given me a zest for, let's explore a bit more.
55:57Let's go a bit more off the beaten track.
55:59Like we used to when we were together, actually live life a little bit before we get too old.
56:04I hope that all the other teams have an incredible time because I think, you know, that would make up for our journey.
56:11Yeah, I agree.
56:12I do feel really bad for them.
56:24I do.
56:25Something obviously went amiss.
56:26Something's gone amiss, isn't it?
56:27It's actually really sad.
56:28You don't want it to be anybody too.
56:31Well done to everybody for getting here.
56:33You two have gone from fifth to fourth to third.
56:37Oh no!
56:38We're coming!
56:40Yeah, we've gone the opposite.
56:41We've gone second, third to fourth.
56:44But you're still here.
56:45Still here.
56:46So now there's three of us really close.
56:48Anything can happen.
56:49I mean, there's still a lot at stake, but I think now the elimination's out of the way.
56:53Yeah.
56:54I think everyone can probably relax a bit more.
56:56Yes, but you guys just relax a little bit more than us two.
56:58Yeah!
56:59Yeah!
57:08We're going in there, Paul!
