00:00Rising in the Himalayas, the river Ganges weaves its way through northern India to the country's spiritual capital, Varanasi.
00:25Known for its profound connection to death and the afterlife.
00:34It's got the nickname the City of the Dead. This is a totally new experience for me.
00:40Each building has its own steps.
00:42It's just impressive how many there are of them as well.
00:44Yeah, every building's a gap.
00:47Whilst thousands of Hindus bathe in the water to purify their souls,
00:52others bring deceased loved ones to be cremated along the riverbanks,
00:57believing it to lead to liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
01:02A salvation known as Moksha.
01:06It's the first time we're seeing Varanasi in lights.
01:09Yeah.
01:10Came in last night and it's just incredible.
01:16Are you feeling it's a race now?
01:18I'm feeling a little more confident because we're not at the bottom and we're going the right way.
01:23And the fact we're not playing catch-up anymore.
01:25We've spent most of the race just playing catch-up.
01:27You've caught them.
01:28Caroline and Tom have closed the lead on the winners of the last two legs,
01:33Brian and Melvin, from 23 hours to just over four.
01:38We're now, I feel, a bit more under pressure again.
01:42Yeah, sure.
01:43There is no doubt that Caroline and Tom are as competitive as we are.
01:47There's a little glint in Caroline's eye to say,
01:49ooh, we've got a chance of winning.
01:51Good luck on the next leg.
01:53You've done really well.
01:54Good luck to us all, having a really good time.
01:55And we'll see you in second place at the next one.
01:57You're welcome.
02:04I'm absolutely heathen.
02:06More than 24 hours after the first team's checked in.
02:10Let's go faster, faster.
02:12Yeah, faster, faster.
02:13Underlay, underlay, underlay.
02:14The remaining two are yet to arrive.
02:17Come on!
02:19Elizabeth and Leticia.
02:21Oh, should we just walk?
02:23Two more a day, Havali Hotel.
02:27Havali Hotel.
02:28Straight ahead, thank you.
02:30And Finn and Sean Ed.
02:31That dog doesn't like us.
02:35Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:38Thank you, thank you.
02:39In here.
02:40Namaste.
02:41Please sign in here.
02:42We go again.
02:43We go again.
02:48Look at that.
02:49We're not last.
02:50No.
02:51I thought we were ages away.
02:53Brian and Melvin still first.
02:54Tom and Caroline a day ahead of us.
02:56Oh, wow.
02:58We definitely weren't expecting third place.
03:00I think for me it's just the shock of being in India.
03:03It's completely different to what we're used to.
03:04It's just all a bit much.
03:05And I do think I'm gonna really struggle to cope with it altogether.
03:10Oh.
03:11Oh.
03:12We are very behind.
03:15So behind.
03:17We're very behind.
03:19This leg was frustrating.
03:21I feel like we really have to, you know, evaluate our strategy.
03:26We're so far from the first position, like, over like 24 hours.
03:30It definitely makes you feel anxious.
03:32Oh.
03:33It was really cutting.
03:36We're at four place, but the only way is up.
03:39Yeah.
03:4011.18am.
03:52Morning.
03:53I'm gonna stay.
03:54Thank you very much.
03:56First to find out their next destination in the race to Kanyakumari.
04:00McLeod.
04:01McLeod Ganges.
04:03Brian and Melvin.
04:05Okay.
04:06Cleod.
04:07I've never heard of it.
04:08McLeod Ganges.
04:09If you'd have said to us at the start of the race that we would be starting the second
04:13half of the race in first, I probably wouldn't have believed you.
04:17In fact, we've won the last two legs, haven't we?
04:19Come on, you oldies.
04:21Hi.
04:22We're trying to find a place called McLeod Ganges.
04:26In Himachal Pradesh.
04:28It's a mountain village, is it?
04:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:31It's here.
04:32Thank you very much.
04:33Appreciate you.
04:34Thanks very much indeed.
04:35Nice to meet you.
04:36And you.
04:371,500 kilometres north-west, the fifth checkpoint, McLeod Ganges.
04:47The hill station is home to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, and a Tibetan community
04:54that sought refuge in India in 1959.
04:57Today, the town draws thousands of devotees who come in search of blessings and Buddhist
05:05wisdom.
05:06Right, what do you think, mate?
05:07Get the old specks out.
05:09So we're old.
05:11To reach the checkpoint, teams must navigate through one of the most populated regions on
05:17earth, before climbing nearly 7,000 feet into the foothills of the Himalayas.
05:24Their choice, take advantage of India's well-connected cities, including Capital Delhi and Agra.
05:33Two points on the famous tourist route, the Golden Triangle.
05:37Or, to avoid the crowds, teams could begin their ascent sooner, passing through the more tranquil
05:47hill stations of the north.
05:51I'm thinking we ought to go to Delhi.
05:53Where?
05:54Excellent transport links.
05:56Yeah.
05:57And it keeps us moving.
05:58We need to keep moving.
05:59In the right direction.
06:00Yeah.
06:01We could go to Rishikesh.
06:02Okay.
06:03It's considered the birthplace of yoga.
06:05We get accommodation.
06:06How far away is that off the beaten track?
06:08It has to be a consideration.
06:09Yeah.
06:10I've got my race head on.
06:11It won't be too far.
06:12It'll be really popular.
06:13I ain't bendy enough.
06:15So you don't want to do it?
06:16No.
06:17You did the zipline for me.
06:18I will do the yoga for you.
06:20The brothers' plan, head straight to India's capital, before a reset in the calmer surroundings
06:27of Rishikesh.
06:28Let's do it.
06:30My arse is numb.
06:34That's a big boy.
06:35It's a girl.
06:36Is that a girl?
06:37No, it's got horns.
06:38It's a girl.
06:39It's a girl.
06:40Next to leave Varanasi, Caroline and Tom.
06:43Oh, look at this place.
06:46I'm just overwhelmed, even though I've now been in India for a few days.
06:50I'm still thinking, this is just extraordinary.
06:53You know, I would never come here.
06:55Never, ever.
06:56And yet it's one of the greatest things I've probably ever done.
07:01Hello, can you help us?
07:03We're looking for McLeod Gange.
07:06McLeod Gange.
07:07Okay, I know that.
07:08Do you?
07:09Can you show me on the map, please?
07:11Where are you from?
07:12England.
07:13Lovely jubbly.
07:14Hi!
07:15It's close to Himalaya.
07:16Yes.
07:17Lovely.
07:18We're just going to sit down somewhere and make a plan.
07:20Where can we sit?
07:21The best place where you can sit just behind my family's dog.
07:24McLeod Gange.
07:25It's a very beautiful man.
07:26Oh, with mountains?
07:27That's what we want.
07:28Yeah, with mountains.
07:29This is my granddad here.
07:30Is that your granddad?
07:31It's not my granddad, you think?
07:35This is cool.
07:36We feel like honoured guests.
07:38Okay, let's get a plan going.
07:41Personally, for me, I'd rather go more scenic route through the foothills, but I think you
07:46then sacrifice bigger transport hubs.
07:49If we go Delhi, which is the busy city that has better connections and could actually be
07:53faster.
07:54Yeah.
07:55So if we can just keep gaining, then by the end of the race, perhaps we'll be in first.
07:58The checkpoint itself will have mountains.
08:00Yeah, I agree.
08:01This city route is going to be more expensive.
08:04Especially if we spent money on a taxi, which is what we want to do.
08:07So we need to earn some money.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Let's go.
08:11Eager to build upon their growing momentum in the race, they plan a direct route utilising
08:17transport hubs.
08:18Their first stop, the city of Kanpur.
08:21Would there be a bus tonight?
08:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:25There is so many bus going to Kanpur Delhi.
08:26Okay.
08:27Thank you so much for letting us make the plan here.
08:30No problem.
08:32Bye.
08:33We have done so well.
08:34I know.
08:35To catch up.
08:36We can't now let that slip.
08:38Already on the move.
08:40Don't have to get in it.
08:42Brian and Melvin board an overnight sleeper bus to Delhi.
08:46There you go.
08:47I'm in.
08:48I have never, ever, ever been in a bus like this.
08:56It's got a vague, very vague resemblance to a first class pod on a plane.
09:03What's missing, however, is the cabin crew, the food, the TV, the bar, the champagne, the
09:13orange juice, the knife and fork.
09:16So there is a vague similarity because you can lie down in it.
09:20And that's about as far as it goes.
09:23With the second largest road network in the world, interweaving for over 6.3 million kilometres,
09:30buses, buses are the backbone of India's low-cost travel.
09:36An alternative to the renowned, but often overcrowded, rail services.
09:41It's a sleeping bloody car.
09:42The old fella loves his bloody horn.
09:43It's not making so much noise.
09:44It's not making so much noise.
09:46.
09:48It's not making so much noise.
09:51It's not making so much noise.
10:00already is busy hello
10:08after traveling 300 kilometers overnight Caroline and Tom have reached Kanpur an industrial city
10:25set on the banks of the Ganges known for its tanneries and a once thriving textile trade
10:34oh look at these are so beautiful is it do it well yes all right not bad no they're in the midst of a
10:41fragrant task to bring in some extra cash oh it smells hot and smelly already yeah because there's
10:49like a lot of ways Devyani runs a family business well hard work upcycling discarded temple flowers
10:58to manufacture eco-friendly incense sticks everything is done by hand it's very manual
11:05i notice it's ladies you have here yeah this is all women working on organization yeah because
11:13in india do the women normally stay at home while the men work is that how it is not common anymore
11:18it's getting a lot better yes yeah but this is one way to feel empowered yes and feel they're
11:25independent financially and yeah and this also brings happiness to them because they're able to
11:31contribute in the family and they've got each other to chat to and yeah exactly exactly it's all women
11:36so they're much more comfortable working together yeah absolutely i think we're aiming to fill this
11:41thing up gosh yes look how well they're doing i don't actually work i've definitely lost confidence
11:53i think once you're in a long-term family relationship where i'm basically looking after other people
11:59and not doing stuff for myself my confidence has definitely lowered these ladies are doing something
12:05useful for themselves and earning a bit of money and it makes you feel more confident and a bit more
12:10capable and that's exactly what's happening to me thomas what do you mean by that because i haven't
12:15earned money properly for so long and it it takes away the belief in yourself i didn't i didn't value
12:21myself at all i always mean you didn't value yourself whilst i was useful at home yeah you're very very
12:28loved but i felt i didn't have any value apart from that so my my life only had value through yours and
12:35daddies i do feel that as thomas is uh more independent that i become a little less needed
12:45less secure and i don't actually have anything that i do for myself did you find you just kind
12:51of lost purpose or you just yeah most definitely i've never really said these words before to anybody
12:57you probably don't see it because i'm just mum and doing the same old thing i feel i feel a little
13:06loss or was feeling a little lost now i actually feel the longer i'm going on this race thomas
13:13the stronger i feel i'm finding i'm able to cope in situations that i would normally have avoided
13:20yeah and now i'm almost thinking bring it on that's good that's generally the first time the
13:26mum has told me that she kind of felt her life was on a downward slope at home because i i didn't see
13:32that i just assumed that mum always loved what she was doing because she always got on with it she was
13:38always busy and i think it's only really now that i realized that maybe she felt there was more to life
13:42but she didn't know how to really explore it i just want mum to realize how valuable she is
13:49and i want her to just give herself the respect that she actually deserves and think this is all going
13:55to waste it's beautiful now
14:01their wages go straight on a taxi we'd like to go to matura taxi to matura 7040 whatever the amount
14:11go for it to take them another 340 kilometers north jump in all right let's go
14:18quick quick quick
14:23oh cow on the road oh i need to clean air still in varanasi
14:31we want to go train station leaving the checkpoint in third place hold on oh that's like an unsafe
14:42roller coaster with no lack of strength teenage couple finn and seanet
14:46i really do not want to go to delhi agra and delhi they're the most populated bits i want to see the mountains so i feel like maybe up through
14:57luck now towards the himalayas yeah set on avoiding delhi to reach india's hill station sooner
15:05they will first need to navigate the capital of uttar pradesh luck now this isn't train station
15:12oh okay we're in a rush to get to the train station and he's on his lunch break
15:17food he's having what are they having is it tobacco oh it is is it is tobacco um leave when they chew it oh my gosh you stopped to get tobacco
15:29and we're off again
15:30close behind them being 24 hours behind the leaders we don't want to add any more hours you know yeah
15:43elizabeth and latisha are the last team to check out
15:46i feel like this leg because we're trying to catch up we have to just focus on the race and speed up a
15:52little bit more i really don't like being so behind i would say you're more competitive than me
16:00i can be very competitive when i can see a finish line i'm like let's go i think you are sometimes
16:09quite nonchalant about a lot of things so and you like that about yourself as well
16:17i think going through delhi that does seem like a faster more accessible route yeah go past agra
16:23see the taj mahal go through delhi yeah there'll be easier connections we will get to the checkpoint
16:29a lot quicker let's go let's go let's go the sisters plan carve a direct route via two of the region's
16:37biggest cities to checkpoint it was quite tough to decide what's the best route being in fourth place
16:45there's a lot more you have to consider oh my gosh this is so busy um i want to get out of here already
16:56two tickets to look now tonight nothing at all tonight thank you so much
17:09just because there's no trains for it doesn't mean there's there's no buses
17:15no no no no no no no no no no no i don't have anything sorry oh wow this is really overwhelming
17:24bus to look now tonight yeah seven o'clock yes right i'm gonna book two tickets then yeah seven o'clock
17:33yeah we booked a bus ticket to look now leaves very soon i'm just very thankful that we are able to
17:42leave to leave tonight oh we've done it bye bye bye do you want biscuits biscuits biscuits
17:56there we go
18:03it upset me seeing the kids they were so dirty so skinny
18:08i've not come across a lot of poverty before nothing to this degree oh
18:21so again it's okay you can't do anything about it it's not your fault it's like that
18:30you're gonna make me cry and i don't
18:31the hardest part is we've never seen children struggle that badly to see people begging and
18:39to see kids on the streets and yeah it's just a lot to take in
18:49we've done it we are here
19:01the birthplace of yoga for thousands of years rishikesh has been a magnet for saints
19:15sages and pilgrims and in 1968 the beetles also came searching for transcendence drawn to the ashrams
19:25the river banks centers of spiritual guidance
19:36on their own path to enlightenment
19:41brian and melvin you will arch the back here roll your spine up i've always classed myself as reasonably fit
19:50but my ankles won't let me my knees won't let me my back won't let me my head does but my body my body
19:56doesn't inhale stretch i'm fitter than you i'm gonna have a a lady that looks after me careful how you
20:08say that so i have a personal trainer that has got me into the peak condition as i am today
20:13and slowly now settle down shavasana relaxation
20:33oh
20:42yeah good enjoyed that i don't get it no offense to people that love yoga it's certainly not my cup of
20:49yorkshire i'm glad he came i'm glad he part took i didn't hear him laugh i didn't hear him giggle the
20:56whole place is a little bit like a school it's like a like a very 1960s complex there's a dining
21:03hall there's a library the rooms are small and basic it did remind me of school actually brought back
21:10memories not good ones we need to go now in garden good thank you trying not to stand on the on the
21:21radishes go in between them i am but i've got quite big feet with service to others a key spiritual
21:29practice at the ashram the brothers volunteer with the garden upkeep i can't remember the last time i
21:37walked into that type of dining hall that did trigger memories of school yeah to evoke those memories
21:44and then talk about them is good i think you think so yeah i'm thinking whether whether i wanted to run
21:50away and go home i don't think i did because probably home wasn't wasn't that good either
21:57i don't think any child should be frightened of the parents um we were literally beaten
22:07i hate gardening i'm not a big weed picker upper my wife's the gardener what we normally do at
22:13home is i buy some some weed killer when i met my wife she couldn't believe the type of upbringing that
22:23i had um and we've made certain that our children simon and david have been brought up in a strong
22:34uh family bond and there's no way that i was going to send them to body school that was not going to
22:41happen i do tell my boys that i love them they know that i love them definitely broken the chain on
22:47developing a family life my my mum was probably had a very hard upbringing herself she brought that into
22:55our family so we had a hard upbringing there's no way that i was going to let our family have that same
23:01upbringing and certainly my wife wasn't she's the strong one of the of the family well yeah
23:17yeah five weeks in and uh
23:19i haven't spoken to her and certainly i do miss them
23:36we can't help the past now the past is gone but i'm really proud of bright he's turned into a great
23:45family man a supportive husband a loving father grandfather i do envy his family because i think
23:53he's got a beautiful family
24:02apart from julie they're the only family i've got i think one of the reasons i didn't want a family
24:09is because i was afraid because i didn't want it to turn
24:23but brian's done that for us he's got a great family
24:27you all right yeah anyway uh we're better get back into race mode yeah we do onwards yeah onwards
24:40and upwards we've got to get to shimla tonight yeah that would be the plan wouldn't it ideal if
24:45we could let's go for it tap tap now heading towards shimla brian and melvin are the only team
24:53to have started an ascent into the himalayas whilst the other three teams are still scattered across
24:59uttar pradesh
25:04after an 11-hour overnight bus from varanasi whoa
25:12i'm gonna put my mask on i can't even see we need masks we need glasses elizabeth and letitia have
25:18reached agrav i can feel the dust particles in my eyes oh here's a chuk-chuk and just 60 kilometers
25:29north from there in mathra can you take us to the elephant sanctuary oh yes can you take us thank you
25:38caroline and tom take a dream detour from the demands of the road
25:42No way I'm here I'm seeing
25:51Oh my golly they're beautiful animals it's like a dream come true for me
26:00they've arrived at a refuge that helps to rehabilitate more than 30 abused and
26:12exploited elephants and relies on volunteers and staff like Shivam these two elephants were
26:19rescued from a circus from a circus they were in very bad condition they were treated very badly
26:24in India there are an estimated 2,700 elephants in captivity taken from their families in the wild
26:33and used for entertainment or labor oh my gosh Thomas have you seen this one's feet and nails
26:40so this is actually a hot water with Epsom salt do you think they have the mental capacity to know
26:46that you are helping them they are trying they do definitely elephants are that's why they are
26:51considered the most intelligent animal it's just lovely so whatever is best from our side so we
26:56are providing everything I can see that to give them a best life with best possible I absolutely
27:05adore animals an animal can give you so much back if you look after them properly they're family
27:13creatures I just think it's marvelous that they're now here getting that love and attention it's so
27:20beautiful aren't they marvelous as part of their visit Caroline and Tom are mucking in to help the
27:31volunteers is the poo gonna be warm oh god you can see all the fiber it's not that well digested
27:37god these are massive you tell I've done this job before never afraid of hard work and poo picking
27:45this definitely does remind me of home I love being outdoors and I think that comes from being a
27:52farmer's daughter I had two very hard-working parents I was on a mixed farm in Suffolk I thought I was
28:00pushing yeah we are slow too slow I think it's stood me in good stead because you're very grounded
28:08because you're nearly always smelly and dirty you're always driving tractors humping bales always
28:14expected to work and contribute and that stayed with me for life mum is surprising me I thought she'd
28:22struggle in India but she's really just throwing herself into it she's not holding back working with
28:29the elephants being an incredible experience you've had such a good time mum seems very free and it's
28:34quite inspiring I'm very lucky to have a mum who is like mum Thomas race oh then god digger why don't we
28:44just use that push it yeah we galloping for I don't know if you're drunk or I feel alive Thomas this is amazing
29:04wow this is actually so close this is the best view that I've ever had working close to the gleaming Taj Mahal Elizabeth and Letitia are able to work at their hostel to top up their budget
29:20I'm trying to not distract myself with the view and try and concentrate on working but yeah it's incredible
29:28I don't mind cleaning I feel like I use it as a um you know a thing to reset yeah it definitely clears my
29:37mind oh thank you I remember our chores that we used to have to do on a Saturday morning Saturday yeah
29:50it's just cleaning and finally get a weekend and it's like you have to wake up early to clean you and
29:59me used to be really silly growing up and just do silly things yeah I mean I was just so gullible I
30:05just really did everything there's four of us four siblings um we're the middle ones together I feel like
30:14the middle child is forgotten we're both the middle children see you even forget you forget that I am a
30:23middle child as well no you don't count as a middle child you're literally a second child they have their
30:29own standing third is a middle child and they're forgotten do you feel like we've changed yeah maybe
30:38I just feel like because we've spent time apart we missed out on continuing for Selena to continue
30:45continuing um being carefree and whatnot so I feel like that's just a bridge we need to you know
30:53uh cross or also because yeah at home like I can be silly you know my brother our brother parents and
31:05what not because they've I was always with them yeah I think honesty is lacking in our relationship
31:20we're just not saying how we really really feel and we don't communicate well it would be nice to drop
31:31our guards and be ourselves around each other it's easier said than done but yeah we are family and I feel
31:39like it should be something we should be comfortable doing you know we want to get a bus to Shimla
31:50oh we're there that way thank you thank you 440 kilometers north of them and there are doing
31:58and determined to stay ahead of their competition we're going to get to Shimla tonight yeah if we spend

32:12so there's no direct bus tonight to Shimla is the one tomorrow morning to Shimla
32:22shit so that's a kick in the knackers a bit in it bugger we're not going to get to Shimla tonight
32:30we're stuck here so that means we're going to have to get a hotel catch the bus eight o'clock tomorrow
32:36we're going to lose our lead definitely lose our lead a 20-hour lead is nothing in this game you
32:42miss one bus and the 20 hours has gone yeah for Caroline and Tom to catch up minutes count

32:54way too busy I've never in my life been through wow a place this tight with this many people I don't think
33:02Finn and Sean Ed are trying to get there it's stressing me out a lot it's okay we'll be fine it's really
33:10important for us to get out tonight one reason being catching up in the race and another reason is just
33:16for my sanity we should ask someone we want to get to Dehradun is there any buses from here to there tonight
33:26yeah I don't mind 9 30 okay thank you we have to get that bus we've got to get out yeah I agree

34:24quiet tonight and we'll be on our way and you can forget about busy places like this
34:30since stepping foot in India there's just a sensory overload and it just causes me to break down I'm out of control and I don't like the feeling of not being in control
34:43I kind of just go quiet I try to block out the noise block out any people that's trying to speak to me I just want to be by myself to try and like get that control back
34:55mentally emotionally physically the race genuinely is the toughest thing I've ever done

37:15A blend of Indian, Persian and Islamic styles,
37:19it took 20,000 people and 1,000 elephants to complete
37:24and is now visited by 8 million tourists every year.
37:28Seeing it in real life, it's incredible.
37:31It looks like a picture, you know? Yeah.
37:35It doesn't look real, almost, you know?
37:38Mm, mm. Looks like a cake.
37:40A cake?
37:42Yeah, I guess so.
37:46Our relationship is very surface level.
37:50Should we go closer? Yeah.
37:56It's difficult to understand how to navigate,
37:59but I think it's never been the same
38:03after we lost the family house.
38:06There's definitely a lot of aspects of our relationship
38:10that we still have to explore.
38:12I would like us to be comfortable in our own skin,
38:16be open, and I would like her to be comfortable with me.
38:22Would you like a Taj Mahal built for you?
38:24Me? Yeah.
38:25No, it's a bit grand.
38:27I think I know what you wouldn't want,
38:29I just don't know what you do want.
38:35My Taj Mahal can be like a, you know,
38:37do you know what, just book me a holiday, I'll be fine.
38:39I would like a resort.
38:41A resort?
38:43If we're going big grand just shows,
38:45I would like an island.
38:47What?
38:49Your love.
38:53Don't laugh like that.
38:57All out now, all out.
39:07Okay, Thomas, we're all out here.
39:09All out here?
39:10This must be it.
39:11This is an international bus station.
39:15Oh, my God.
39:17Caroline and Tom have arrived in Delhi,
39:21a gigantic megacity that 33 million people call home,
39:27and where India raised its flag back in 1947,
39:31marking the end of British rule.
39:35We want to go to Chandigarh as quickly as possible.
39:38Chandigarh is possible right now.
39:40Oh, that's perfect.
39:42Yeah, yeah, that's perfect.
39:43Okay, thank you.
39:44Can we please book two tickets?
39:45Does the bus have AC?
39:46Yeah, yes, yes.
39:47Yes!
39:48Onward travel sorted,
39:50mother and son edge closer to the checkpoint.
39:53We've just managed to sort everything quite quickly,
39:56and it's all blown quite nicely,
39:58and the bus has AC, so...
40:00We're happy.
40:01I am feeling really competitive.
40:03We're desperate to get to checkpoint the quickest way possible.
40:06So we're always moving.
40:08We're normally gaming, so we're doing quite well.
40:12Bloody hell, that's a great movement.
40:14On the way.
40:16Let's go.
40:18As Caroline and Tom race on,
40:20Finn and Sean Ed are still waiting for a way out of luck now.
40:24This is so stupid, the system of, like, crossing the road.
40:28How do I get through?
40:32This is the place where, like, I've genuinely really wanted to be home.
40:38I think it's missing more just...
40:42Being able to escape these noises.
40:50What was the need for that?
40:52If I did face an issue at home, I would normally contact my dad.
40:56It's very uncomfortable for me to not have that...
41:02..well, yeah, safety net,
41:03because I can't just call them up and be like, what do I do?
41:07Finn's been really good in this situation.
41:11Since we crossed that border,
41:12and he's been a lot more supportive.
41:15It takes a lot of stress off my shoulders, so...
41:18Yeah, it's...
41:21..it's nice.
41:24Obviously, at the start, it wasn't...
41:27..my communication wasn't the best,
41:28but I think now I definitely am learning a lot about myself.
41:33I knew Sean was struggling,
41:35so I feel like that's the way now.
41:36I just have a bit of things now.
41:38But I think this has definitely kind of motivated me
41:41to kind of do it like I know I can do it.
41:44The bus is finally here.
41:48We're leaving, Shred.
41:49We're leaving.
41:51I can finally see the mountains.
41:53Clean air and just a little bit calmer.
41:56A day later than planned,
41:58their 14-hour bus will bring them to the mountains by morning.
42:02Whee! We're leaving.
42:05Oh, my gosh, it reeks.
42:07Finn.
42:08Shred.
42:10Smelled enough of the bus already.
42:11But I'm ready.
42:12Don't start.
42:13Can't beat me.
42:14It's gonna really annoy me.
42:15It's gonna really annoy me.
42:16Shut up.
42:17Shut up.
42:18Shut up.
42:19Shut up.
42:20Shut up.
42:35Oh, my God, this is so high.
42:37I'm so on the edge.
42:41Five days into the leg, two teams are out in front,
42:46gaining elevation as they ascend the winding roads
42:49of India's mountainous state, Himachal Pradesh.
42:54Ooh, big drop down there.
42:55I was gonna say, it's getting quite rough and big drops.
42:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
42:59We're going up into the mountains.
43:00The mountains.
43:01We haven't seen anything like this in India.
43:11Oh, God.
43:12I just turned the engine off.
43:13Oh, no.
43:17Oh, I'm feeling far too nervous now.
43:19Bloody hell.
43:20We're gonna be over the side.
43:21We're going.
43:22At a fair rate of knots.
43:23It is capping bends every 30, 40 metres.
43:24Yeah, but it's the drop.
43:25Higher up the drops were thousands of feet.
43:26The driver's just going for it.
43:27He's probably trying to do it in record time.
43:28If anybody gets in this fella's way, they've gone.
43:29The desire to get to the checkpoint now is immense.
43:30We are on race mode.
43:32Try and get to the checkpoint tonight.
43:33Do the
43:57get to the traffic tonight do whatever we can just be moving moving moving closer closer closer
44:04the third team to travel via delhi elizabeth and leticia are the only pair to attempt to
44:09navigate its train network 20 guys two tickets i just want to really reduce our time this leg
44:18we're taking a risk so hopefully this will pay off the reward for overcoming a convoluted booking
44:25system a fast and direct route to chandagar just 250 kilometers short of the checkpoint
44:35oh my gosh oh my gosh
44:39i feel like this mode of transport is just so unsure it's one of those desperate occasions
44:45that we want to get a seat on the train because we need to be getting to the checkpoint general
44:51tickets are for unreserved carriages which due to overcrowding means boarding is not guaranteed
45:00oh it's approaching oh look
45:05people are spilling out the windows limbs all over the place there's not enough space on the carriage for us
45:11oh you need to get on the train ask if i have space for an upgrade once on the train and depending on
45:21availability travelers can upgrade to higher class seated carriages i think we'll have to get on though
45:27in there and try and do it from we can't walk in here because look at this they're trying to squeeze squeeze squeeze squeeze on
45:34oh this guy this guy this guy this guy where
45:38sir hi we have a general ticket is there an upgrade you are going to next to coach this guy
45:47should we get on here
45:48what do you uh uh yes we want to change our ticket for two people uh yeah okay okay that's fine yeah
46:02okay i do think that was a risky move yeah that wasn't very chaotic actually but we've tried we've
46:12tried our best what could we have done really no yeah it definitely feels like we're back in a race
46:18there's still a lot trying to go so we need to just keep on keep on going yeah we need to get to the
