00:00When we were kids, we did promise ourselves an adventure.
00:07I don't think I'll actually come to terms with what I've been doing until I'm home.
00:15I'm finding that the longer I'm going on this race, the stronger I feel.
00:21It's just a whirlwind of emotion.
00:24This adventure has been the most uncomfortable adventure of my life.
00:28But it has been the most rewarding.
00:34The closer I'm getting to the finale, the more competitive I'm getting.
00:40If we add every single thing we've learned together now, I do think we have a good shot at winning.
00:47People will underestimate them, and I think that's one of our superpowers.
00:58The closer I'm getting to the finale.
01:00It's fun.
01:00It's fun.
01:01It's fun.
01:01It's fun.
01:02It's fun.
01:03It's fun.
01:03It's fun.
01:04It's fun.
01:04It's fun.
01:04I actually can't believe that we're here, and I actually can't believe that we've turned it around.
01:32We're going into leg aids in first place. We couldn't have asked for a better start.
01:42When you open that book at no name, how bad would you want to see it?
01:44Obviously I want to win. The only thing I've wanted this whole time is to have that book just empty.
01:53The odds are against us, but if we look at it in reality now, with the money that we've
01:57got, it could still be anybody's race.
02:00Why can't we catch up 19 hours? Everybody knows that you can catch up time.
02:10Caroline is very competitive, and we're second to them, so we need to be much in their competitiveness,
02:15really. Let's win. It's really tight. Now everybody is on the same level. It is literally crunch time.
02:25We just need to go, go, go.
02:354.44 a.m. Hello, good morning. Good morning.
02:51Heading into the eighth and final leg, Caroline and Tom are in pole position.
02:55But as they begin the final battle to the finish line, mere hours separate the top three teams.
03:04You ready? Last one. The finish line.
03:10Kaniyakamari.
03:13Oh, very exciting.
03:15Shall we go? Let's go. Bye.
03:17This is it.
03:19After racing 13,000 kilometers, just over 1,000 remain.
03:25The distance that stands between the teams and a prize of 20,000 pounds.
03:32The finish line, Kaniyakamari, sits at the southernmost hip of India, where tourists flock for the sunrise,
03:42and the 41-meter Tirovaluva statue stands guard, a profound symbol of Tamil culture and philosophy.
03:51To get there, they must traverse the southern states, where life by the sea has shaped its traditions, from spicy fish curries to water-bound rituals.
04:04The most obvious route to Kaniyakamari is down the coast.
04:10Following along the coast may be the most direct route, but competition for tickets is fierce.
04:18And whilst travelling inland is a greater distance, heading via southern India's major cities offers regular services and well-connected highways.
04:32I think if we left Pangea and went inland, it does look a little more complicated.
04:37I think we'd have to overcome a mountainous area, and it just seems to look a lot longer on the map.
04:43Whereas I think if we stick coastal route, shorter mileage, surely the distance is shorter that way.
04:49Then go from Kochi to Kaniyakamari, and then win the race.
04:55I love that plan!
04:57Caroline and Tom's plan, propel themselves along the coast to Kochi, in the heart of Kerala.
05:05Hello!
05:06Good morning!
05:07Hello!
05:08We'd like to get a taxi to the station.
05:10As soon as possible.
05:12From our very first leg, we have learnt so much.
05:17This is the time for us to leave no stone unturned, do absolutely everything we can to ensure we come in first.
05:24How much to drop us at the train station, please?
05:271,600.
05:28Yeah, okay.
05:29Perfect.
05:30Okay, perfect.
05:32Winning would mean everything.
05:35For myself, but more for Mum.
05:37It would mean so much to her to win.
05:40We are looking for a train south today.
05:42Yes, please.
05:43Which comes first?
05:448.15.
05:45It leaves today?
05:468.15.
05:47UDP won?
05:48Yes.
05:49Let's do UDP.
05:51Thank you very much.
05:52Eager to get moving, Caroline and Tom make a snap decision to travel to UDP, nearly 500 kilometres shy of Kochi.
06:05We're on the move.
06:07I think this is probably our best chance.
06:10I am feeling very relieved that we have a lead.
06:13It gives us a slight buffer zone.
06:15We're on the move, but we're not covering a massive distance, which another team could do.
06:21The thought of waiting around is absolutely awful to me.
06:25I think you've done good.
06:27Really, really good.
06:29Departing just under seven hours after their rivals.
06:34Get the correct transport, make the right decisions, because, you know, Tom and Caroline, they had a head to start, so we need to catch up with it.
06:42Elizabeth and Leticia.
06:44I think the coastal route seems to be less in terms of kilometres.
06:48I think, though, that the inland route may have better roads, better connections, because of the bigger cities.
06:54Yeah, I feel ready to get to Kaniakamari.
06:58Game on.
07:00The sisters' first step to reach the finish line, head inland to the state's cultural capital of Mysore.
07:09What time is the bus to Mysore?
07:124.45.
07:133.45.
07:14Is it a sleeper?
07:15Yes, a sleeper.
07:16Yes, a sleeper.
07:17OK.
07:18That's it.
07:19That's it.
07:20I'm like, yeah, motivation.
07:22Let's go.
07:23We can do this.
07:24Let's just try our best, and our best will just get us there.
07:30We're on route with a night train.
07:33Bus.
07:34Bus.
07:35Also making their departure.
07:38I'm nervous.
07:39Finn and Sean Ed.
07:41The finish line is Kaniakamari.
07:44A tantalising 54 minutes behind the sisters.
07:48That's the last time we're opening an envelope.
07:51It's not going to be straightforward.
07:53It's going to be a hard leg, I think.
07:55Thank you very much.
07:56Thank you so much.
07:58Here we go.
08:01We've got this.
08:02We've just got to plan it well.
08:04The major cities, like Bangalore, seem quite big.
08:07We really need to use that for our advantage.
08:09Ask as many people as we can.
08:11Get as much information as we can.
08:13I don't think anything else really matters this leg now,
08:15other than just focusing on speed.
08:17There's no room for mistakes, really.
08:20Do you speak English?
08:22Do you know any buses going to Bangalore?
08:26What's he saying?
08:27Is it a moment to follow him?
08:29Cool.
08:30Happy Saturday.
08:31Okay, we're going.
08:32Where are we?
08:33Oh, I didn't go in.
08:37This feels dodgy.
08:39I mean, that bus doesn't look functionable.
08:41We're following this, but I think he's taking us to get bus tickets.
08:51I'm not really sure.
08:53Ah.
08:54Tourists.
08:55Ask me.
08:56I'm a tourist.
08:58Yes.
09:00Thank you very much.
09:01Thank you so much.
09:02Bungalow.
09:03Bungalow.
09:04Bungalow, yes.
09:05As soon as possible today.
09:09Heading inland, they stick to their proven strategy,
09:12staying close to major cities with strong transport links.
09:18Stay good.
09:19Thank you so much.
09:20Thank you very much.
09:21I think my competitiveness is kind of ranked up a notch.
09:24I think I'm a lot more competitive than Finn.
09:26If he doesn't win, he doesn't want to be too disappointed.
09:29Whereas I'll just be disappointed for probably a few years
09:32and then I'll get over it.
09:34300 kilometres south, Caroline and Tom are approaching their destination, Udupi.
09:42Thomas.
09:43Mmm.
09:44Thomas.
09:45Yes.
09:46I hate to tell you, but we're only a few minutes away.
09:48Thomas.
09:49OK.
09:50OK.
09:51I avoid ever having to wake him up because it's normally really unpleasant.
09:54Sometimes I've even taken him in a hot cup of tea or a bacon sandwich
09:57and I leave it beside him, tell him I've done it and then just run.
10:01It's been beautiful scenery.
10:04Jungle, very, very marshland and wetlands.
10:06Mmm.
10:07And some beautiful water buffalo with their symbiotic birds.
10:11Mmm.
10:12Beautiful.
10:13Good.
10:16The coastal city is flanked on one side by the Western Ghats
10:20and on the other, the Arabian Sea.
10:23We're in Udupi.
10:25But these natural barriers can limit onward transport options.
10:29Excuse me, sir. Hi.
10:30Do you have two minutes just to help us, please?
10:32Yes.
10:33Oh, thank you so much.
10:34Um, we need to get to Kochi.
10:36Kochi.
10:37Do you know if the train is one of the fastest ways to get there?
10:40One minute, huh?
10:41Oh, thank you for looking.
10:43There are multiple dreams, but there are more seats available right now.
10:47Oh.
10:48No tickets.
10:49No.
10:50A bit of a kick in the teeth.
10:53Do you know if there's buses tomorrow?
10:55Tomorrow there is an AC sleeper.
10:575.25.
10:58That's a 5.25 in the afternoon.
11:01My worry is it's not exactly race mode for me.
11:04Physically nothing else we can do.
11:06And I will sleep well tonight if he knows books.
11:10Would it be okay if you could help us and book two tickets?
11:13Yeah.
11:14For the bus tomorrow night?
11:16An overnight bus will take Caroline and Tom 500 kilometres south to the Carolyn city of Kochi.
11:24But not till tomorrow night, meaning a delay in Udupi.
11:29With our bus not being in till tomorrow afternoon, I'm quite worried about having Elizabeth and Leticia on our tail.
11:35Finn and Sean are only about 45 minutes behind them.
11:38I think they're both breathing down our neck.
11:41Oh, this looks quite fancy, doesn't it?
11:47It's even got a door.
11:48Oh!
11:49Oh!
11:50Oh!
11:51Oh!
11:52Oh!
11:53Oh!
11:54Oh!
11:55Oh!
11:56Oh!
11:57Oh!
11:58Oh!
11:59Oh!
12:00Oh!
12:01Oh!
12:02Oh!
12:03Oh!
12:04Oh!
12:05Oh!
12:06Oh!
12:07Oh!
12:08Oh!
12:09Oh!
12:10Oh!
12:11Finn and Ed also opt for sleeper travel, bound for Bengaluru.
12:16Tom and Caroline did have a head start.
12:18They may have spent this day going as far as they can.
12:21If that's the case, they will be further than us.
12:25We're going hundreds of kilometres tonight.
12:27We just need to get that extra little push to win.
12:30I think we can do it.
12:32Finn and Sean Ed are just an hour behind, so we do need to keep that lead ahead of them.
12:38This leg is now on average.
12:40Do you know what I mean?
12:45What we've got, Melv, now, is we've got the opportunity to catch a load of hours up, like just bombing it south.
12:51Trailing the leaders by 17 hours, Ryan and Melv hope to kickstart their comeback.
12:57If we go inland, Melv, we're going to probably lose it again.
13:01We're just going to waste our time.
13:02It's about getting there as quick as possible.
13:03It is.
13:04We both still want to win.
13:05Yes.
13:06We both still want to win this, and we've got a chance.
13:07We have got to get as far south as we can.
13:09And if it's a taxi, then...
13:11Then that's what it's going to be.
13:12And if we run out of money, then we run out of money.
13:14We run out of money.
13:15We need to get it bought.
13:16The earlier we do it, the sooner we're on our way.
13:18OK.
13:19All right?
13:21Due to cost-effective travel across India, all of the teams have been able to preserve funds for the final leg.
13:28How far south can you take us?
13:31Bangalore.
13:32Yeah?
13:33Bangalore is 350 kilometres.
13:34It's fine.
13:35We'll go.
13:36Get the car.
13:37Bangalore.
13:38Yeah.
13:39For Brian and Melvin, spending nearly 40% of the remaining cash on a taxi to Mangalore, it's a crucial boost.
13:47Right.
13:48Good.
13:50So you think we'll get there about 6 o'clock in the morning?
13:53Yeah.
13:54OK.
13:55We're only going to be there for a quick cup of tea, wash under your armpits and carry on.
13:59We've got half a chance there of doing some.
14:03Catching some time up there.
14:04Winning the race would be absolutely brilliant.
14:07What an achievement to do that with your brother.
14:10If Tom and Caroline aren't hundreds of kilometres in front of them, they're doing something wrong, aren't they?
14:15They just need a bit of bad luck and one missed connection and we can catch up.
14:22We'll catch up.
14:23If we won and I could see Melvin's face, it would be fantastic.
14:30Money can't buy that.
14:32That would be brilliant.
14:34Whilst three teams race through the night, Caroline and Tom are the only pair at a standstill.
14:40It gets us to where we're going.
14:42Well, it does.
14:43It gets us bloody close to it.
14:45On the outskirts of Udupi, the Jumadi Islands.
15:04An archipelago situated in the delta of the Ceta and Suverna rivers, attracting rare bird species, including the black-batched dwarf Kingfisher.
15:19Look at those two, seriously.
15:20Wait, wait, wait.
15:21Yellowy green.
15:22Oh, yeah.
15:23They look like lemon and lime parrots.
15:24So this is like a little water safari.
15:25It is, yeah.
15:26It's turned out to be a little bird-watching exhibition.
15:27It's brilliant.
15:28Still waiting for their bus to depart, Caroline and Tom.
15:42It's the calm before the storm, Thomas, because it's bound to get so manic later.
15:56That was lovely.
15:59India delivers.
16:00Pretty cool.
16:01Just amazing.
16:05I thought I'd be too old to travel and experience what I've done, because you always hear about the young travelling and backpacking,
16:11and yet I now realise that I can be just as capable and quick.
16:16It doesn't have to slow you down.
16:18You've kind of been tied down for 20 years, and now all of a sudden you can go and do whatever you like.
16:26I can now.
16:27I was frightened of, and this is being quite serious, possibly one day being lonely.
16:31Yeah.
16:32And just drifting my time until then without a purpose.
16:35Yeah.
16:36It's been quite sad to hear that you felt like you'd lost a bit of purpose.
16:41We never really spoke about it, you know?
16:43Yeah, that's true.
16:44Sometimes it's difficult to reveal yourself to your child as a person rather than just their parent.
16:50Yes, yeah, I know.
16:51It could possibly be awkward or a bit embarrassing.
16:54I now view you as more of a friend as well as a mother.
16:59Well, I think before you were very much a mother figure in the household.
17:03It's enabled me to see you in a different light.
17:06Oh, I'm so pleased.
17:08Travelling with you has been probably the best experience of my life.
17:14Oh, that's really nice to hear.
17:16It really has.
17:17It has been great.
17:19I think we both helped each other out a lot more than we could actually ever imagine.
17:26I wrote that in my journal.
17:29And I wrote something else in my journal I kind of want to read to you.
17:32Let me go grab it.
17:41I'm actually going to read it because I'm sure you laugh at the spelling mistakes.
17:44Oh, I love them.
17:46Right, this was a note to self on leg six when we were at the carpet place.
17:52I keep having a feeling that me and mum will win, but I think we already have.
17:58Just remember how lucky you are to be travelling the world,
18:01seeing the best things you couldn't even dream of with your mother and having the best time ever.
18:08Remember how well me and mum got on, how fun she is and just how much you love her.
18:12I appreciate these times and these memories because there will be a time that I can't.
18:19This to me is winning.
18:21No amount of money can make me realise all of this.
18:24It was absolutely lovely, thank you.
18:25It's okay.
18:26I'm feeling very valued and very lucky and totally loved by Thomas.
18:41My son reintroduced me to the world and given me a second chance of life when I thought that might have passed me by.
18:50Right. We've had a lovely time. I think it's back into race mode now.
18:54Definitely.
18:55What a lovely thing for a young man to be able to express and write down.
19:04350 kilometres east.
19:07It's very tired.
19:09Oh.
19:10Oh.
19:14No, stop, Wendy, no, stop, no, stop.
19:15Let's go.
19:19Bengaluru.
19:20Celebrated as the garden city of India.
19:24Home to one of the largest flower markets in Asia.
19:28We need a bus.
19:29Madurai.
19:30Madurai, yeah.
19:31Pay off one.
19:32Today?
19:33Yeah, today.
19:34Ah, wow.
19:35Ken and Sean Ed are looking to secure bus tickets to hurtle them 400 kilometres south to Madurai,
19:42in the Tamil region of India.
19:44Our last training session before the big day.
19:47Run, Sean Ed, run!
19:50The bus is until five, so we have a couple of hours to kill.
19:53So I think we're going to explore the city and enjoy the last few days we have on the race.
19:58Mmm, that hummus is good.
20:00It's good.
20:02It's the nicest roadster part.
20:05But here we are, nearly at the final.
20:08I'm actually having a weight level of time.
20:11Both a lot stronger than we initially thought we were.
20:14We can rely on each other, depend on each other.
20:17Yeah.
20:18This race has kind of done a lot for us without us kind of realising.
20:23You've still been strong through it all.
20:27Still been very resilient.
20:29Appreciate it.
20:33Appreciate everything.
20:38I'm not going to cry.
20:41I'm not crying in a delta place.
20:46Been a journey and a path.
20:48It has.
20:50It definitely has.
20:52This race has shown sides that we may have not seen.
20:57For the both of us, I'd say.
20:59Wow.
21:00Look at the flowers.
21:02Wow.
21:03A lot of flowers.
21:05Sean Ed's always been there for me.
21:07She gets up in the night and has my diabetes.
21:10She's very understanding.
21:12She cares a lot.
21:13So what do they do with them?
21:14Just decorations and stuff.
21:15Wedding item.
21:16Wedding item.
21:17Wedding item.
21:18Marriage.
21:19Marriage function.
21:20You get matching ones.
21:21Matching flowers.
21:22Aww, yay!
21:23Little neck things.
21:24You never ask for stuff like that.
21:28Can we have it around our neck?
21:33And you get a little bracelet as well.
21:34Oh, yeah.
21:36Oh, my gosh.
21:37Yeah, yeah.
21:39We've watched each other go up, really.
21:41We're like best friends and boyfriend and girlfriend.
21:45Oh, we could get married now.
21:48Um...
21:50We could walk over the finish line, come in first with them on.
21:54We could wear our flowers first.
21:55Yeah!
21:57I think life for Ashnod would be quite boring.
22:00It would be quite dull.
22:02I feel very, very lucky.
22:03I feel very fortunate to have met Ashnod.
22:08So, we get on here.
22:14Which is the first class?
22:17First class.
22:19After a seven-hour journey through the night,
22:23Brian and Melvin have pulled ahead of the race leaders
22:26and look to be extending their lead by train
22:29to the coastal city of Corricode.
22:34See, that's quite pretty, isn't it?
22:36Yeah, it's nice, isn't it?
22:37When they have crocodiles, it's far south.
22:42Kerala.
22:44Believed by some to mean land of coconut trees.
22:48A tropical state
22:50with a labyrinth of lagoons, backwaters and canals.
22:54Dotting its waters are its Ketuvalum boats.
22:58Once used to transport rice and spices,
23:00now transformed into floating hotels.
23:02It is slotted into place, isn't it?
23:04We got straight out of the cab.
23:06Within two hours, we've got a train.
23:08Which we're now on.
23:10There's that little glimmer saying,
23:12well, you could do it.
23:13You might.
23:14You might do it.
23:16England.
23:17We're going to Cozy Cody.
23:18Cozy Cody is known as a food city.
23:20Food city?
23:21Yeah, yeah.
23:22Tomorrow, we're going to Cochy.
23:23Train is there, good one.
23:24It's a good train.
23:25Can we book that train when we go into Cozy Cody?
23:26Tomorrow, I will check the train.
23:27I will check.
23:28Just see me.
23:30One train is there, 1.45.
23:32It will reach for evening, 5.20.
23:36Thank you for helping us.
23:38Melvin.
23:39Melvin.
23:40Brian.
23:41Brian.
23:42Brian.
23:43Brian.
23:44Brian.
23:45Brian.
23:46Brian.
23:47Brian.
23:48What's your name?
23:49What's your name?
23:50What's your name?
23:51What's your name?
23:52What's your name?
23:53What's your name?
23:54Melvin.
23:55Brian.
23:56Brian.
23:57Brian.
23:58Brian.
23:59What's your name?
24:00Mansu.
24:01Mansu.
24:02Before you, UK.
24:03Yeah.
24:04We're all in India.
24:05Remembering?
24:06No.
24:07I don't remember it.
24:08Yeah, we don't remember it.
24:09How old are we all?
24:10If I could apologise, I would.
24:11This system.
24:12Train system.
24:13Train system.
24:14This system you gave me.
24:15Did we do it?
24:21After 13 hours on a pass.
24:23So, this bus station, how long?
24:26Uh...
24:27Five minutes.
24:28Okay, five minutes.
24:29Can we get a bus to Madurai from here?
24:34Possibly there.
24:35Yeah, yeah?
24:36Okay, perfect.
24:37Elizabeth and Leticia are approaching Mysuru.
24:41All our hard work has led up to this.
24:45Like, all the night buses we've taken, all the sleeper trains we've taken, like, it's all worth it for the win.
24:52Sharing the win together.
24:56That would just be the cherry on the top.
25:03Can we also get the bags?
25:05No, we need our bags.
25:07We need our...
25:09In...
25:10In...
25:11In...
25:12In...
25:13In...
25:14In...
25:15Could he open the book, Frank?
25:16Unaware that their lead has slept, Caroline and Tom are trying to locate their pre-booked bus to Kochi.
25:22Bus operator name collard of travel over there. I think
25:29Back to the chaos
25:31God we mustn't relate
25:34We've got to find it to see the bus here. Well, right there. Yeah, but that's not the one we've got
25:40Do you speak English? Where do we get the sleeper bus to Cochi?
25:46Thank you very much Thomas come on here. Oh shit. I'm okay
25:51Yeah
25:56I've got the ticket
26:00I'm just nervous. It's horrible
26:03My mind just can't rest. There's been a lot of time since we arrived here yesterday
26:08Yeah, and we're only leaving now
26:10I know that's given enough time for Elizabeth and the tissue finish on it and even potentially Brian and Melvin to even go past us because we didn't travel that much distance
26:20As the pair forge ahead again
26:24So where does the buses come?
26:26I can do to be generally just here. Okay
26:29Finn and Sean Ed are trying to escape Bengaluru the second largest city in India. I
26:36Think this is right. I'm sure I think so
26:39We're wondering if this bus is here. This is actually here. Oh, sir. Yeah, the best comes here. Yeah. Oh, what a relief
26:47Do you know where there's a shop that sells like chips?
26:51Just a moment. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah, thank you. Yeah, thank you
26:56He really wants to help. He's very eager to help isn't he? Yeah, bless him
27:09Oh
27:13Thank you so much. You didn't need to do that. We owe you. No, no, no, no, no. Are you sure? No, no. Thank you so much
27:21I just wanted to help actually. Oh, thank you so much. You've been so helpful. You're a very kind person
27:26Thank you so much. I've been lots of places again. Yeah, sometimes you get help. Yeah, yes, the language. Yes, exactly
27:33It's very tough. Yeah, after it. What's your name? My name is Clinton when I was born
27:38Ex-president of America Bill Clinton was there
27:51He's got bananas as well Oreos
27:56Oh bless it. That's actually that's the nicest thing someone's actually probably done for us
28:03Is this us? Yeah. Yeah, okay. Thank you
28:08Look at that
28:09No dust at all. This is so bougie. What a good sleep of us to end it on
28:16I think I've settled with India now the
28:20Amount of time we've spent here. I think I've really adapted the amount of different people you come across in these places
28:27It's it's a cool country
28:29There's a lot more to this country that meets the eye
28:32That's exactly what I wanted to get out of traveling and out of this experience
28:38Look where I am now
28:41I had to finish the race first and in Joe
28:43I thought I'd have to go home because I was struggling so much as the couple take their second consecutive night bus
28:50Here's a tuk-tuk you're a tuk-tuk you're available one team take a break from the road in Corrie code
29:01What did it be? 40 rupees? Thank you
29:03A prosperous trading hub for nearly two millennia it's known as the City of Spices
29:14You can see how much cash we've actually got here for Brian and Melvin who have traveled 600 kilometers non-stop from Panagi
29:23A chance to take stock
29:2515, 16, 17, 18
29:2824,841
29:30So we've got 20 for the running
29:321, 2, 3, 4, 800 and a bit
29:34For grubber be it
29:37Money isn't going to matter about chasing the leaders
29:40We can't do any more than what we've done
29:43No
29:44Can we?
29:44No
29:45So money is irrelevant
29:46The unknown on this leg
29:50If we could create more time we would
29:53If we could turn back time
29:55That's what we want to do
29:56It's Tina Turner isn't it?
29:57No it would cheer
29:59Melv hungry?
30:02Yeah, I think it's time
30:04Beer, biryani, naan, bread
30:06Go for it
30:08That's it, we're gone
30:09Can you get off my bed by the way?
30:12Because this is mine tonight
30:13There's yours
30:15We've done everything that we can
30:20In order to pre-put the leaderboard
30:24We are now relying on everybody else to cock up
30:27We're going to get the best shot
30:29We will do everything we can
30:30Would you want to have chai or south indian coffee?
30:42Chai?
30:43Chai?
30:43Please, yes please
30:44All right
30:45Ground down by a 13 hour overnight bus to Mysuru
30:50Elizabeth and Letitia have found a bed for the night
30:54In a homestay run by Sarchin
30:56I can see that a lot of your
30:59Is from your travel
31:00Yeah
31:01Sarika is the one who picks all of these up
31:03I love it
31:04She's the one who
31:04Yeah
31:05Decorates the house
31:06I just live here
31:09So all the rooms are booked by a wedding party
31:16Have you attended an Indian wedding in the UK?
31:19We haven't attended any Indian wedding
31:22It's like a night or a couple of nights before the wedding
31:25They have something called Sangeet
31:27Sangeet literally translates to music in Hindi
31:30Okay
31:31So it's like the bride and her friends and the groom and his friends
31:35They put up a show, dance and stuff like that
31:38It's not a South Indian tradition
31:39But because of the movies
31:41It's become so popular that even South Indians have started
31:44Have adopted it, yeah
31:46If you're up for it, I'll check with the family if they're cool with you guys coming in
31:50Oh lovely, yes please
31:53Gosh, this is our dream
31:58You've got to dress up as well, so
32:00Sarika
32:01Look at this
32:04Lovely
32:05The earlier we get ready, the better
32:07Chop, chop
32:09Let's go
32:10How long do we have?
32:11Like 15 minutes?
32:13You're in a race, right?
32:14Exactly
32:16An Indian wedding typically lasts three days
32:23The highest number of guests ever recorded
32:26150,000
32:28According to Hindu faith
32:31Once a couple is married
32:32They are bound to each other for seven lifetimes
32:36Thank you
32:45Thank you
32:47Thank you so much
32:49Wow, he's really going for it
32:52The hips
32:53Love it
32:55They seem so welcoming
32:56I've been, you know
32:57People come to the
32:59That's how it is
33:00There are people who just go to a wedding
33:02Even if they don't know anyone
33:04And they're going to show up
33:05And they're going to show up
33:05And they're going to put the food
33:06No
33:07See?
33:07He's not
33:08I've done it
33:10But it's not common
33:11Wow, wow, wow
33:15This is definitely topping off
33:17The end of the race
33:19In India
33:20I just love how he's having such a good time
33:23He's loving it
33:24He's giving the energy
33:26At the beginning of race
33:30I feel like me and my sister's relationship was strained
33:34Let me take a picture of you
33:36Oh, this looks so good on you
33:38I feel like how we were when we were kids
33:44We've become more comfortable in each other's presence
33:46So I feel like the race has definitely allowed us to make time for each other
33:50Hi, ladies
33:51You look very good
33:54You look like sisters
33:56I can see them
33:57You look alive
33:58Look at them
34:00Family is really important to me
34:09I think
34:10At the beginning of the race
34:12I had so many assumptions of Leticia
34:15And I've slowly let those go
34:18And I'm seeing Leticia for who she is now
34:22And not thinking of her as like a little seven-year-old girl anymore
34:25I'm just so happy about, you know
34:32It was my sister that I was able to take this journey with
34:35Thank you for coming
34:37Oh, no, thank you for having us
34:39It was amazing
34:40We definitely broke down the barrier of opening up
34:43Bye, bye-bye
34:45Bye-bye
34:45We know we're there for each other
34:48And I feel like it's part of our story
34:51It's something we've done together
34:52And we'll remember it forever
34:54Hello, mate
35:10Two for coaching, please
35:11There you go
35:12Thank you
35:13Simple, isn't it?
35:16$2.50
35:17After spending the night in Corrie Code
35:21Brian and Melvin have booked an afternoon train to Kochi
35:25But first, time to dip their feet in the Indian Ocean
35:29Ooh, that's a lot, isn't it?
35:33It's nice, yeah
35:35Picture, picture, picture
35:39A picture
35:39You want to take a picture of us?
35:41Yeah
35:41That's good
35:43He's printing them now, look
35:46Thank you
35:47Thank you
35:48It's actually not a bad little photograph, is it, really?
35:53And the photo's not bad
35:54It's actually quite a good photo
35:55We're 62, 65 years of age
35:58And we're about to wait this long
36:00And we've needed something like this to say
36:02Come on, let's go and do this
36:04Let's go and have that adventure we've always talked about
36:06You keep that photo, Mel
36:08I will, mate
36:09Get a nice frame for it
36:10I'm going to get a pound, then
36:13No, you need something decent
36:15I do believe that we've grown closer
36:17Because we've done a lot of things together again
36:20As we did when we were kiddies
36:21I don't think I'm going to need a therapist
36:23We're not going to pick up the phone and talk to your bride
36:25Have you got any photos at your house at all?
36:28No, none at all
36:29You've got nothing, no photos up at all of anyone?
36:32No, no, no, no, no, no, no
36:33So why don't you frame that one
36:36I will do
36:36And keep that one
36:37And that's the first photo
36:38I will be
36:39From growing up as kids
36:42And then we went our separate ways
36:44And so we started our life together
36:47And then at the back end of our lives
36:50We're back together again
36:51It's pretty special indeed
36:53Feels nice, doesn't it?
36:56We have got a train to catch
36:58Let's go
36:58Let's go
36:59Onwards, yeah?
37:03It's so colourful
37:04Look at those flowers hanging up there
37:06Caroline and Tom's long-awaited 11-hour overnight bus
37:10Has put them back in contention
37:12That's remind me a little bit of Europe
37:14With the quaint streets
37:15Cobble pavements
37:17It's lovely
37:17Meaning they're the first to arrive in Kochi
37:21The jewel of Kerala
37:23A collision of cultures
37:30Where a 450-year-old synagogue
37:33Stands beside mosques
37:35And Christian churches
37:37And Katakali dancers perform in the courtyards
37:41Look at that
37:43That is massive
37:45On the shoreline
37:46Medieval Chinese fishing nets
37:49Brought to the Malabar coast
37:50By traders from the east
37:52Cantilever over the shallows
37:54Oh, it's literally done by stones
37:58Look at that
37:59Anything in the net?
38:02This is like being a pirate of the Caribbean
38:04Feels like we're walking the plank, Mum
38:08I know, I know
38:09Do you do this every day?
38:11Every day
38:12Early morning
38:12The nine-up of chatting
38:14Okay
38:14And two acres finishing
38:16It's very efficient
38:17Only lacking
38:18Oh, can I pull it?
38:22Yeah
38:22Oh, no way
38:24This trip on a more personal note
38:26For me has been eye-opening
38:29Whoa, stones coming in
38:31Wow, look at that
38:33That was incredible watching the stones come down
38:36I came out of school
38:38Very confused and quite
38:39Quite scared of the future
38:41I was taught
38:43You had to be good at school
38:45To do well in life
38:46Wow
38:50Wow
38:51That's like see-through
38:53It's given me just a bit of confidence
38:56To know that
38:57Even though I'm
38:58I'm not necessarily book smart
38:59You can learn so much about yourself
39:02And about the real world
39:03By just throwing yourself out there
39:05It's coming back up
39:06It's coming back up
39:06Look, what's the stones?
39:08Oh, it's so cool
39:10I like stumbling along
39:13Stuff like this
39:14Cool stuff like this
39:15Yeah
39:1575 kilometres north
39:21We've got to leave Kochi tonight
39:24Ryan and Melvin are in hot pursuit
39:26Where's the crane at the world 13?
39:29No tickets
39:29There are many taxi operators
39:32Oh, where's the
39:33We've got about 15,000 rupees
39:36So we could do that
39:37300 kilometres to the east
39:40Elizabeth and Letitia
39:42Are on their way to Madurai
39:43Hopefully, you know
39:45If an insured haven't caught up
39:47Or Ryan and Melvin
39:49Their last major transport hub
39:51Before the finish line
39:53I feel like
39:54As soon as we get on that transport
39:55To the checkpoint
39:56All the nerves will come
39:57You know
39:57It is very emotional
39:59It's just like
40:01Closing this chapter
40:03I guess
40:04Already there
40:06Hey
40:07I get to have
40:08Free my handy
40:09Name
40:11Sean Ed
40:12You like
40:13What a name
40:13Finn
40:14Finn and Sean Ed
40:17Squeeze in a final souvenir
40:19From Madurai
40:20How does it all start off
40:21With your name?
40:25She's getting a name
40:26Oh, no
40:27That's not
40:29She's not going to be happy
40:30Like that
40:30Oh, bless
40:32I feel so bad
40:33That's gone kind of wrong
40:37Aw, thanks for showing
40:39How much you love me
40:40You wrote your name
40:41And my name in your hand
40:42That was really nice
40:46Finn and Sean Ed
40:48Thank you
40:49Thank you very much
40:51The plan is now
40:52To go pick up our bags
40:54And book our final transport
40:55Of the race
40:56I'm sorry
40:59But I couldn't think of anything worse
41:00Than that
41:00Finn and Sean Ed
41:01Yeah, all right
41:02This is all for me
41:04As the landmass of India narrows
41:09So does the race
41:11With all four teams
41:12Closing in on each other
41:14And the finish line
41:15In Kochi
41:17Can you tell us where to go
41:20To book a sleeper bus, please?
41:23Caroline and Tom
41:24Are raring to get on the move
41:26Not in the whole of Kochi
41:31I think we should just consider
41:37A private taxi the whole way
41:38Okay
41:40Well
41:40My only concern
41:42Is we found out
41:43It's about 340 kilometres
41:44And would that not be
41:48Just too long
41:49For one driver all the way
41:50We've got the budget
41:51And we've always said
41:52We want to
41:53We don't want to finish with budget
41:55We want to finish first
41:56So let's do that
41:57Well, let's look at that then
41:58I'm happy to
41:59I think now
42:00We just need to find
42:01Something that keeps us moving
42:02While they search for a driver
42:04Willing to take them
42:06To Kanya Kumari
42:07266 kilometres east
42:10In Madurai
42:11Spin, spin, spin
42:13Just to push ourselves
42:15To the checkpoint
42:16Elizabeth and Letitia
42:24Are adopting a similar strategy
42:26We'd like to go to Kanya Kumari
42:28Yeah, Kanya Kumari
42:29You can take us to Kanya Kumari
42:31Yeah
42:31The other side of town
42:33Finn and Sean Head
42:35We need to get to Kanya Kumari
42:37Do you think it's possible
42:38To book us a taxi there?
42:40I'll try
42:40But I don't know
42:42About the charges
42:42Let me
42:43Okay
42:43Yeah
42:44If you could get the price
42:45For us
42:45That would be great
42:46So at what time
42:48Will you want the taxi?
42:49Like right now
42:50As soon as you can
42:51Yeah, as soon as you can
42:53It takes about half an hour
42:56Okay
42:56Yes, perfect
42:58Could you tell him
42:59It's a race
43:01And we need to get there
43:02As quickly as we can
43:03As quickly as possible
43:04Yeah
43:04We're in Kochi
43:06The only way
43:07That we will be able
43:08To catch up on the leaders
43:10Will be to use
43:12The piece that we've got
43:13Left
43:14And throw it
43:16Throw it at it
43:17That's alright
43:19That's alright
43:20It's a big end
43:21No, it's a diesel
43:21And it's diesel
43:22Right then
43:24Let's get in
43:25And let's get out
43:26Let's get and move on
43:27This
43:28Is our last chance
43:29You know
43:30To come first
43:31Let's go, go, go
43:33Kanya Kumari
43:34Formula One driver today
43:36Still got a chance
43:37We're getting in first
43:37There's Coco here
43:38It's really important
43:40That we
43:40We listen to each other
43:42Communicate
43:43And just try
43:45Think as rationally
43:46As possible
43:46We've got this
43:48We just need to be
43:49Wise
43:50Not stupid
43:52After thousands of miles
43:57Raced through China

52:41That's a really good feeling.
52:43I'm lost for words. I can't believe it.
52:4551 days racing
52:47through countries that I never thought I'd go to.
52:49I never thought we'd come this far.
52:51I never thought we'd achieve so much.

53:23Do you have five?
53:25I'm knackered.
53:29It would have been incredible to come first,
53:31but obviously, we can't all come first.
53:33We've gone, what, 12,000 kilometres?
53:35It's been more than just the distance.
53:37It's been a journey for us.
53:39I'm a bit sad that the race is over now, though.
53:41We're going home.
53:43It's good.
53:51Whilst I'm standing here, sweaty, smelly, exhausted,
53:55I'm actually feeling on top of the world.
53:59Throughout the race, I've learned the confidence
54:01to not care about what people think,
54:03and I've learned that from Mum.
54:04Woo!
54:05Where are you from?
54:06England.
54:07Lovely jubbly.
54:08It's just been glorious
54:10to get to know my son as a person,
54:12as a travelling companion.
54:14We've discovered each other as people,
54:16and it's as if the generations between us
54:18have disappeared,
54:19and it's just been absolutely magical.
54:21I'm feeling really, really proud of ourselves
54:25for, like, pushing through right into the end.
54:28Oh, wow!
54:30It looks like a picture.
54:33It's an experience I will never forget.
54:35Ooh!
54:36I feel like I can set my mind and do anything now.
54:38Thank you so much!
54:40I definitely feel a lot closer to Letitia,
54:43and it's definitely from this race.
54:45It's like a different bond.
54:47I'm excited for that dynamic,
54:49and even, you know,
54:51I hope you feel comfortable sharing your life, too.
54:53Yeah.
54:54I'm really proud of us.
54:5751 days of travelling,
54:59all to come down to a 45-minute difference
55:02of coming first.
55:03I think we've done well
55:04to actually make it to the finish line.
55:06We started this journey quite immature.
55:10We had a lot of room for improvement,
55:13a lot to learn.
55:15We hadn't experienced any of the world.
55:18And I think we're going home
55:20with so many more life skills.
55:23Wow!
55:24Oh, I don't know that!
55:27I feel very fortunate
55:28and very grateful to have done the race with you, so...
55:31Marge is probably still on the cards at some point.
55:34I'm not sure when.
55:35Not right now.
55:36But, yeah, at some point.
55:38This would be a nice proposal.
55:40It's too hot.
55:42Come on!
55:45OK.
55:46We got it.
55:48We're here.

56:22And, erm, really pleased that we've done it together.
56:26Don't do that.
56:29Many times as a kid I was told I wasn't good enough
56:31to do this or to do that.
56:33Well, you can do anything you want to do.
56:35And the way!
56:38What we've done is we've got to know one another.
56:42We have rekindled a few lost memories
56:45and we've made a few more as well.
56:47I'm pleased that I've done it with Mel.
56:50We're brothers, so yes, we do love each other.
56:53But wouldn't I tell him?
56:55No, I wouldn't.
56:56I'm not going to turn on this old Mel.
56:58I love you, Brian.
57:06Oh, there he is!
57:08Oh!
57:09Yay!

57:29Well done, everybody.
57:30Everyone's smashed it.
