Hidilyn’s nephew bags gold in Palaro weightlifting
Matthew Diaz, nephew of the Philippines first-ever Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn, emerged triumphant at the Palarong Pambansa secondary boys 48kg class at the Laoag Central Elementary School on Monday, May 26.
Diaz, 14, hoisted 73kg in snatch and 93kg in clean and jerk to win the gold in the competition which got reintroduced as a demonstration sport in Palaro.
An incoming Grade 9 student at Jalajala National High School and representing
Calabarzon, Diaz bested Generosmel Cortez of Region 9 and Rayney Joy Espina of the National Capital Region (NCR).
Cortez bagged the silver medal while Espina claimed the bronze.
