00:00My name is Shauna Moose Shamley. I'm Chantel's mom.
00:06I'm Tammy Defoe. I am Chantel's guardian.
00:15Guardian, I'm her auntie. I raised her for many years off and on.
00:23As a matter of fact, I named her. I have seven children and myself, one boy and six daughters.
00:37And they all treated her like a sister along with her sister and brother.
00:43They were all like siblings. They weren't cousins. They were siblings.
00:48So it was a big, beautiful family.
00:53But they always kept in touch even when they weren't together.
00:57And yeah, matter of fact, we're still all in touch.
01:03And they're all grown. They all got families of their own.
01:08And just losing one is just really hard on the family.
01:17And with Chantel, it just like, it was heartbreaking.
01:25It is. It's still, it's a struggle.
01:29It's like, I just can't believe that, you know, she...
01:42We lost Chantel.
01:46You know, she was like, this sparkle in everybody's eyes.
01:55You know, she was just lighting up the room, you know.
02:00Somebody was down, she'd walk in and they'd lighten up.
02:05She loved to dance. She was pretty artistic.
02:10She is always coloring, drawing, dancing around.
02:16School. She loved school.
02:24She was taking graphic arts classes at Lake Superior College.
02:30Did an art show.
02:33And she chose my cat to do one of them.
02:38I still have a picture. I gotta get it right.
02:43One day she called me, told me she was pregnant.
02:50And I told her, told her she had me.
02:56I would be there for her every step of the way.
02:59You know, I'd always support her, no matter what was to come.
03:04And Chantel tried her best to come clean.
03:08She went to school.
03:10She went to prom.
03:13She graduated.
03:15She accomplished a lot of things.
03:18And along with every accomplishment,
03:21came with every phone call.
03:24Auntie, Auntie, I did this, I did that.
03:27She wanted to go to college.
03:30She wanted to accomplish so much stuff.
03:33And now she can't.
03:42That's hard.
03:43When she got a job, she was like,
03:45first thing she did was come to me.
03:47She was like, Auntie, I got a job.
03:49Will you babysit for me?
03:51And I was like, you ain't even gotta ask.
03:53All you had to do is just bring her over.
03:55You know, I'm always here for you.
03:57And I babysit Rina.
04:00And I was like, just like when you were a baby,
04:04I got to see your first steps.
04:06I got to see you to crawl.
04:09I got to see her first words.
04:14I got to see your baby's first words.
04:17It's just so warming.
04:21Except she was, she was bummed out because
04:26her baby's first words was, Auntie.

04:33And she was at work and
04:36sent her a video.
04:38I said, your daughter said her first words today.
04:42And I sent the video to her.
04:45She said, Auntie.
04:47She was like, no, she's supposed to say mama or dada.
