00:00Who had a worse day yesterday, Keith, Shime or Drake May?
00:03Probably still Shime.
00:03Okay.
00:04How close was Drake May?
00:05Drake May threw several picks.
00:06Right around there.
00:07Drake May threw several picks.
00:08I don't know if he was talking as big a game as Shime, though,
00:10so that's why I'd probably have to lean Shime, who I'm a big fan of.
00:13I know his stock right now is low.
00:16No, by the dip.
00:17I told you this yesterday.
00:18By the dip.
00:18No, I already own it.
00:19I'm taking a bath right now is the problem.
00:21I can't unload it.
00:22I just got to hold on to it for a while.
00:24But, yeah, Drake May, not particularly sharp.
00:27And you can say, well, you know, he's going up against one of the best
00:28cornerbacks in the NFL.
00:30That's a positive spin.
00:31You could.
00:32Christian Gonzalez is one of the best.
00:35But, yeah, Drake May, because it's one of those guys,
00:37and you and I are obviously high on Drake May.
00:39We did the freaking glitter guns, for God's sakes,
00:41when he got named the starter.
00:43Yeah.
00:44But there is a big group of people, I feel like,
00:46that just assume he's going to be a great quarterback.
00:50And we haven't really seen it yet.
00:52We've seen flashes of it.
00:54But how many guys that started last year could you pick out some highlights
00:57and be like, look at that.
00:59That was pretty good.
00:59Probably all of them.
01:00They're NFL quarterbacks.
01:01You could do it with Caleb Williams, who had a horrible year last year.
01:03Caleb Williams, yeah.
01:04His stats at the end of the year didn't even look that bad.
01:06But when you watch them in the Bears game, he's like, he stinks.
01:08Watch them against the Pats.
01:09I mean, Drake May looked 10 times better than him.
01:12And you could pick out highlights and pick out stats and talk about it.
01:15Yeah, he had that, was it the London or Germany game?
01:17He had the international game where he was like, couldn't miss.
01:20It was great.
01:21But, yeah, what's it going to look like?
01:22Is he going to be able to be a consistent winning quarterback?
01:25That still remains to be seen.
01:27I think right now it's everybody's best guess.
01:29So, in case you're unaware, we talked about this very, very late in the show.
01:32This all came out right before we got off the air yesterday.
01:34Patriots OTAs.
01:36It's passing camp, basically, which is not as important as minicamp,
01:40which is not as important as training camp or preseason games
01:43or obviously regular season games.
01:44This isn't the Super Bowl.
01:45We all know that.
01:46But it is a chance to get a look at how Drake May was going to play.
01:50And if he lit it up yesterday, you know what you'd all be doing.
01:53You'd be going, Super Bowl, 10-11 wins, 13 wins.
01:58Like, you guys would be talking crazy about Drake May if he went out and lit it up.
02:02And I think we're already pretty bullish on the Patriots in May.
02:05But then you see the numbers yesterday.
02:0711 out of 16, which is good.
02:10Four picks.
02:11Oh.
02:12Not so good.
02:12And just for some context, Josh Dobbs yesterday, zero picks.
02:17Ben Woolridge?
02:18Who?
02:19It was Ben Woolridge.
02:20Is that right?
02:20It was Logan Woolridge.
02:21I said Ben.
02:22I'm not actually.
02:23No, you're thinking of Logan Woodside.
02:24I am thinking of Logan Woodside.
02:25I believe it's Ben Woolridge.
02:26I said it.
02:27I'm not overly confident.
02:28No picks yesterday.
02:30Yeah, Ben Woolridge.
02:31So Drake May was the only guy out there throwing picks.
02:34Right.
02:34He threw them either in a six or seven throw span.
02:37I've seen different reports.
02:39Bedard said seven throws.
02:40Callahan said six.
02:41It was all early in the session.
02:42It was all in a quick session where he threw four interceptions yesterday.
02:46And people will say it's just one day at OTAs.
02:49That's just, that's so false.
02:51He turned it over a ton in real NFL games last year.
02:53Oh, yeah.
02:54A ton.
02:54He had ten interceptions last year.
02:56He had four fumbles, two lost.
02:58So turnovers were an issue for him a year ago in his rookie year.
03:03They lost the Patriots games.
03:05I mean, for as brilliant as he was at the end of that Tennessee game,
03:07the pop fly interception he threw in overtime, lost them that game.
03:11So turnovers were a problem a year ago.
03:13They were a problem yesterday.
03:15Anyone who says it's just one day at OTAs technically is right,
03:19but it's a continuation of what we saw last year.
03:21And Keefe on top of that, you have him in a new offense with a new offensive coordinator
03:26in Josh McDaniels.
03:28And you wonder how that transition is going to go.
03:31So we say all that to say this.
03:32And you guys can climb aboard.
03:33617-779-7937.
03:36That's your phone number and your text line for Jones and Keefe.
03:38You can interact on Twitter and Instagram at Jones and Keefe.
03:41Watch along and chat.
03:43Twitch.tv slash BostonWEI.
03:45Always a very healthy chat going on there yesterday, especially for Shime and Greg at the match.
03:51Just nothing but positivity and, you know, pump up comments.
03:56Yeah, that's nice.
03:57You can also watch on YouTube.
03:59Just subscribe to WEI.
04:01Are there reasons for concern with Drake May?
04:04And are we just expecting too much out of Drake May
04:07and not really paying attention to some of the issues he already had a year ago?
04:11Yeah, I mean, last year he won one game basically as a starter.
04:15And I think there were a million excuses, and I would make them as well.
04:19I would be like, the offensive line is trash.
04:20The receivers are trash.
04:21The head coach is trash.
04:22The offensive coordinator is really a quarterback's coach.
04:25He had a lot working against him.
04:28He did.
04:28So it was, I think, fair to lay out all those excuses.
04:32This year it seems like, I wouldn't say they completely cleaned up everything, but they improved everything.
04:39So even if you don't think this is a world-class offensive line, it's better.
04:44The receiving core, same thing.
04:45It's better.
04:45The offensive coordinator is better.
04:47The head coach is better.
04:47So everything around him is better.
04:50And the other side of the ball should be head and shoulders better.
04:51And I've also always maintained that the quarterback is the most important and the highest paid for a reason.
04:57Eventually will be the highest paid in his case.
04:59And they need to lift the play of everybody else around him too.
05:02So I can't, on the one hand, make fun of Brock Purdy for being a guy that has all this great stuff around him and it's more of the guys around him and, you know, not sort of say that guy should be the one that raises the level of play.
05:17I think there are two, three spots in the league where almost any quarterback would be good.
05:20Every other place, the quarterback's the one that needs to sort of lead that team, carry that team forward.
05:25And that's what they need Drake May to be.
05:28You know, I'm not worried after one OTA practice.
05:32However, I don't think we certainly know for sure.
05:35I don't think we know what he's going to be.
05:36Like last year's rookies, I think Washington probably feels pretty good about Jaden Daniels because they saw it on a week in and week out basis.
05:43I think how Chicago fans feel about Caleb Williams is probably similar to how Patriots fans should feel about Drake May.
05:50Yeah.
05:50You know, it's like, yeah, there's still a lot of potential.
05:52I still saw flashes of it during the season, but also saw flashes of the other thing where you're like, oh, this could slip away.
05:58So I still feel like that, you know, they have their obvious starter, but we really don't know what he's going to be yet in the league.
06:04So, no, I agree with all that.
06:07And no one's saying he's a bust because of one day at OTAs.
06:10Yeah, right.
06:11But.
06:11And also, thank you.
06:12You can thank the page or the Celtics and the Bruins not being in the playoffs for why we're starting with Drake May OTAs.
06:18I mean, look, we would have gotten to it either way, but you're right.
06:20If there was a Celtics playoff game last night, we wouldn't be probably starting here.
06:23That's fair.
06:24Same thing with the Bruins.
06:25But already, and you're right, there is a bigger, more sizable, critical group of Drake May.
06:31There is not.
06:31It is not a unanimous.
06:33He's going to be great crowd.
06:35Here you go.
06:36617-779-7937.
06:38That's your text line.
06:39Drake May.
06:40I told you he's a bum.
06:41Tim from Brockton.
06:42I'm not.
06:42I'm not saying he's a bum.
06:43Drake May sucks.
06:44Don't come at me with playbooks and coaches.
06:47Well, it is a second coach.
06:47It is a second playbook.
06:48I think if you want to be charitable to Drake May, you say, yeah, he's learning a new offense
06:53and he was making some mistakes yesterday.
06:56Now, Ben Woolridge has never played in the NFL and he wasn't throwing four picks yesterday.
07:00Wasn't throwing any picks yesterday.
07:02Was he throwing against Christian Gonzalez?
07:04Yeah, well, fair point.
07:05Who was he throwing?
07:06Ben Woolridge probably was not.
07:07I don't know.
07:07I would imagine not.
07:08Dobbs hasn't been in the McDaniels offense, right?
07:10He didn't have any picks yesterday.
07:11No.
07:12He played for Vrabel.
07:12I don't think he's been in the McDaniels offense.
07:13Yeah, right.
07:13Well, he is the pastor or not, so.
07:15It's true.
07:15Yeah.
07:16He's a stud.
07:17I like this one, too, Keefe.
07:18We don't really know how good Drake May is going to be, but hey, let's go ahead and trade
07:21Joe Milton.
07:22Yeah.
07:22If you want to bring that up, go ahead.
07:23The Joe Milton people are out there as well.
07:26So, look, I don't think he's a bust by any means.
07:30I still strongly believe in him, but this is going to be a big year for him to go out
07:35and clean up the turnovers.
07:37Yeah.
07:38It's going to be a big year for him to actually win games.
07:40He doesn't need to go to the Pro Bowl again.
07:41He doesn't need to, I think, you know, even make the playoffs necessarily.
07:45I forgot about the Pro Bowl thing.
07:47To feel good.
07:47He's like eighth alternate.
07:48Well, like Mac Jones.
07:49Yes.
07:50Also a Pro Bowler.
07:51What he needs to do is, you know, clean up the turnovers, which were bad a year ago,
07:56which is why yesterday should be a concern.
07:59The word Karen Garigian used at Mass Live today is it was scary yesterday watching how
08:03he performed.
08:04So, I don't know if he got too strong or not, but on the heels of what he did a year ago,
08:09you've got to clean up the turnovers and you've got to start winning games.
08:11You're right to say this, Keith.
08:12He basically won a game last year.
08:14Yeah, yeah.
08:15He was credited with three wins.
08:16He basically won one against the Bears, and that was a game where the defense dominated.
08:21That's his one true win last year.
08:22So, you've got to start winning games.
08:24You've got to clean up the turnovers, and he's on the clock to do that.
08:26No one's calling him a bust.
08:27I don't think anybody rational, anyway, is calling him a bust.
08:30But he is going to be on the clock to fix those things.
08:33And yesterday didn't look like any progress made towards that.
08:36And there's the year two jump, and it's one Bill Belichick has always talked about that.
08:41There's not a bigger jump in the NFL for players than from their rookie year to their second year.
08:46And so, does Drake May make that jump?
08:48And, you know, just like there's a million examples of rookie quarterbacks having success
08:53and those not, and, you know, second year guys, there's plenty of examples of guys getting
08:57a new offensive coordinator or a new coach and really elevating their game.
09:01But then there's also ones where it kind of messes them up.
09:03So, like, we'll see which path he goes down.
09:06I think he is set up for more success this year than he was a year ago.
09:11I agree.
09:11But, I mean, to start the year, I don't look at him as, like, a top 10 quarterback in the NFL
09:16or anything like that.
09:17And I think if you do, you're way overestimating things.
09:21It's glass overflowing if you think he is.
09:24But does he have sort of the skill set to, by the end of the year, maybe be in that conversation?
09:30Sure.
09:30He definitely does.
09:31But I'm not putting him there now.
09:32Oh, and I think there is a chance, as we said with the McDaniels offense, if he's adjusting
09:36to it now, that makes sense.
09:37I heard Hunter Henry talking yesterday after practice, like, yeah, the turnovers are concerning.
09:41You never want to see them.
09:42But we have a lot of time to work on stuff and fix stuff.
09:45But that is an acknowledgment that stuff needs to be worked on and stuff needs to be fixed,
09:48which, again, makes sense.
09:49New offense, new offensive coordinator starting over again in year two.
09:53And I'd expect for growth throughout the course of the year.
09:55But he's going to have to do those things because, again, last year is not just a one-off day.
10:00Way too sloppy with the football a year ago.
10:03And that was a criticism of him as well at the University of North Carolina.
10:07A bunch of texts as well.
10:08Oh, Peyton Manning turned it over a bunch as a rookie.
10:10Josh Allen turned it over a ton early.
10:13Yeah, those guys weren't exempt from criticism like that.
10:15Peyton Manning set a rookie record for interceptions.
10:18We used to talk about Josh Allen like he was a joke until he started cleaning up the interceptions.
10:22So, actually, did Josh Allen throw a lot of interceptions or is he just not that accurate?
10:27I thought there were picks and fumbles.
10:29Yeah, I think so.
10:30But maybe not.
10:31His rookie year, he threw 12.
10:32His second year, he threw nine.
10:34So, nine's not a bad number.
10:3512 in how many games?
10:3712.
10:38Yeah.
10:38So, he won a game.
10:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:39But the next year, second year, where he still wasn't anointed as a great quarterback,
10:43he threw nine picks in 16 games.
10:44Remember that playoff game, though, against Houston?
10:46That's horrible.
10:46No, it was horrible.
10:47I'm not saying he was great.
10:48And his accuracy was an issue.
10:50But, I don't know.
10:52I also think comparing him to Peyton Manning is fine, but the league has also changed.
10:56Quarterback stats now are so much weighted.
10:58Like, QB rating back in the day or, you know, if you broke 90 was, like, amazing.
11:04Now, it's like the whole league is over 90.
11:05Yeah.
11:05Are you through for 4,000 yards?
11:07That used to mean something.
11:07Set a record.
11:08Now, it's like basically every quarterback does it.
11:10As long as you start.
11:10Right.
11:11So, yeah.
11:13Those guys overcame the turnovers, but they had to overcome them.
11:15That's what we're saying with Drake May.
11:16He's got to do it.
11:17And yesterday was our first look at Drake May.
11:21And there was no progress made.
11:23In fact, it feels like a setback.
11:25There was no progress made.
11:25I don't like that.
11:26I don't like that.
11:27But there was no progress made.
11:28Yeah.
11:29I don't like that.
11:29I don't like that.
11:29Wait.
11:29I don't like that.
11:30I don't like that.
11:31I don't like that.
11:32Quaker proceedings.
11:34I don't like that.
11:40Where do you think?
11:42I don't like that.
11:43I don't like that.
11:43отмет Nate.
11:44Eh.
11:45Not far back.
11:46Sta Canvas.
11:47I don't like that.
11:48I don't like that.
11:48People like that.
11:49Manning will not be seen.
11:50Get out of bed.
11:50Get out.
11:51Get out of bed.
11:51GuJustPro.
11:52Go.
