What are young people worried about in 2025
Transcript
00:00Hello, my name is Amber Allett, and I'm a journalist specialising in education.
00:05From the cost of living crisis, to the changing climate, to the aftermath of a global pandemic,
00:10it can sometimes feel like there's an awful lot to worry about these days.
00:14But spare a thought for today's young people, who often have little say in or no power to act
00:20on the changes they could upturn the world they're going to live in for a long time to come.
00:24TechJoy and Samsung recently commissioned a survey of 1,000 11-15 year olds across the
00:30UK, to find out what their biggest worries are about the future.
00:34This is part of its Soul for Tomorrow Next Gen Tech Challenge.
00:38Here's what they had to say.
00:41The biggest societal issue young people worried about was revealed to be the rising cost of
00:46living.
00:47Seven in ten of them felt more worried about it than they did a year ago, and the survey
00:51show this was mostly fuelled by worries about the potential impact on their parents' financial
00:56situation, bothering a huge 77% of children.
01:01Online safety was their second biggest concern, followed by climate change, then by their own
01:06physical safety.
01:08Interestingly, rounding out the top five was job insecurity in the future, which is concerning
01:13nearly one in three.
01:16Specifically, they expressed concerns about how they'll get a job to support themselves when
01:20they're older, with nearly one in four fearing that they don't have the necessary skills
01:24to cope in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
01:29There is still hope, though, with 81% of young people polled expressing a desire to make a
01:34positive difference to the world we live in.
01:37But they're going to need our help, with a little less than half feeling the current school
01:41curriculum prepares them to tackle today's big issues.
