Analyst expects Pope Leo's papacy to be 'a mix' of old and new   Pope Leo's papacy could be a mix of a continuation of his predecessor's policies and a return to more traditional aspects of the position, an analyst said on Sunday, May 18, as Leo was officially installed as the head of the world's Catholics in a Mass in the Vatican.   Vatican expert and author Philip Pullella said Sunday's celebration was slightly different than previous inaugural Masses as the main members of the clergy — cardinals, nuns and even laity — "pledged their obedience to him."   Pullella said he expects Leo to continue on the discourse of Pope Francis, who died on April 21 after leading the Church for 12 years, in terms of human rights, migrants and other social issues. But he said Leo had signaled a return to more traditional aspects of the papacy, including on vestments. 00:00So technically Pope Leo became Pope Leo the minute he said yes, accepted his

00:17election by the Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel. What happened today is the

00:21ceremonial inaugural mass of his pontificate and that includes, included

00:28the mass, included groups of people representing various parts of the church

00:34cardinals, priests, nuns and even laity pledging their obedience to him. That is

00:42slightly different than some of the inaugurational mass, inaugural masses of

00:48the past with that slight element there which is very important one because I

00:53mean basically you have all sectors of the Catholic community pledging their

00:57obedience to him. So is this a significant change? Leo from the things that he has

01:03already said has indicated that he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor

01:11Francis to a certain extent. We have received signals from him that he will

01:17place a premium on human rights, place a premium on respect for migrants, social

01:26issues like that. On the other hand he has also sent signals that he will go back at

01:33least somewhat to some of the traditional aspects of the papacy as far as for

01:39example vestments are concerned. He's gone back to wearing the type of vestments

01:45that Pope Benedict wore and then were shunned by Pope Francis. So there's a bit of a mix.
