Tourists surprised over election of Pope Leo   Surprised tourists say on May 8, 2025 that they newly-elected Pope Leo XIV was a 'big surprise and a big blessing for the church and for the church in the United States.' He had not been seen as a frontrunner and there was a brief moment of silence when his name was announced to the packed St. Peter's Square, before people started to clap and cheer. Robert Prevost, the choice of the world's Catholic cardinals to serve as leader of the 1.4-billion-member Church, is the first pope from the United States and a relative unknown on the global stage. 02:32And Robert Prevost is a solid man with North American roots and South American experience.

02:42And then he came to Rome. He's been in Rome as a superior of the Augustinians for many years.

02:47So he knows Rome. He knows the ins and outs.

02:50And as the Prefect for the Dicastery for Bishops, he was very trusted by Pope Francis.

02:56And just recently Pope Francis made him a Cardinal Bishop, showing part of his respect for Prevost.

03:03And that means a lot to me.

03:09Well, I never considered him as a frontrunner because, you know, on social media people have their favorites.

03:15So when I found out that it was actually an American Pope, I was really excited, you know.

03:20Like, having the leader of the Catholic Church be from the same country as I am just felt, like, I just felt very proud.

03:28I'm really happy. I'm really happy. It's a big surprise and a big blessing for the Church and for the Church of the United States also.

03:41And the Church in the Americas.

03:44What do you like about this new Pope? What do you like about him?

03:48I mean, he's a missionary. He's a religious from the Augustine order.

03:55And he has a lot of deep spirituality for the Holy Church.
