On Friday, at a House Budget Committee markup of 'One Big Beautiful Bill', Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) spoke about Sen. Josh Hawley's (R-MO) remarks about the legislation.
Transcript
00:00Five minutes to my friend and ranking member, Mr. Boyle from Pennsylvania.
00:06Well, thank you, Mr. Chairman. We will agree this is a big bill for billionaires.
00:14Now, we will hear over the course of this hearing a vigorous debate.
00:21And frankly, there is a strong divide between Republicans and some other Republicans.
00:27There is also a divide between both sets of Republicans and this side of the dais.
00:37I can speak at least as to why it is every Democratic member will be voting no on the bill for billionaires.
00:45Simply put, besides all of the other important issues involved in this bill,
00:53this is the overarching truth.
00:58It is the biggest tax cuts for billionaires in American history,
01:02paid for by throwing 13.7 million Americans off their health care coverage.
01:09Now, those aren't my claims. That is not subjective.
01:13The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office just this week confirmed
01:18that at least 13,700,000 Americans will lose their health care
01:26if the GOP bill for billionaires becomes law.
01:31That is bad economics. It is unconscionable.
01:36Even conservative Republican Senator Josh Hawley called it morally wrong.
01:41I can't believe I'm saying this, but Josh Hawley is right.
01:46Now, as to the part where I say this bill is for billionaires,
01:52you will hear throughout this debate,
01:55as we heard often over the course of the long markups of this week,
02:01Republican after Republican members say they must pass this bill,
02:05otherwise the tax cuts won't be extended for the American people.
02:12That's a disingenuous argument.
02:15And Democrats, in the Ways and Means Committee, proved it.
02:19Here's what I mean.
02:21Over the course of an 18-hour debate,
02:25a markup that began early afternoon and lasted until 8 a.m. the following morning,
02:29this side of the aisle offered amendment after amendment
02:34to protect the tax cuts for every single American
02:39making less than $1 billion.
02:44Do you know those who make $1 billion a year or more
02:47are less than 0.001% of the American people?
02:53Every Democrat voted for that amendment.
02:55Every Democrat voted to protect the tax cuts
02:58for at least 99.999% of the American people.
03:03And every Republican voted against it.
03:06The reality is,
03:09this is delivering the biggest bounty of tax cuts
03:15for multimillionaires and billionaires in American history,
03:19paid for on the backs of the poor
03:21and the working poor
03:23and the middle class in this country.
03:26The American people were asked in a poll I saw not too long ago,
03:30do you support cutting Medicaid
03:32in order to pay for tax cuts?
03:3581% of the American people said no.
03:38A majority of Democrats,
03:40a majority of independents,
03:42and here's the thing,
03:43a majority of Republicans
03:44even said they oppose this radical agenda.
03:48So you can see why Democrats have proudly stood united
03:53against this piece of legislation.
03:56This will do real damage to the American people.
04:01You know, our Republican colleagues
04:03have been on a 15-year quest
04:05to repeal Obamacare.
04:08In this piece of legislation,
04:10they will come closer to their ultimate goal
04:13than ever before.
04:14I referenced the 13,700,000 Americans
04:18who will lose their health care
04:20if this bill passes.
04:22About half of that
04:23comes from decimating the Affordable Care Act.
04:29Folks, we know what happened eight years ago.
04:32They had their repeal of the ACA passed,
04:35the House of Representatives.
04:37But then in the Senate,
04:38a few brave Senate Republicans stood up
04:41and gave it a famous thumbs down.
04:44I hope there'll be a few House Republicans
04:47who will join with us either today
04:49or on the floor if it gets that far next week
04:52and protect the health care
04:56of millions of Americans.
04:59Say no to the big bill for billionaires.
05:02With that, I yield back.
05:03I thank the right...
