00:00Round number two, Friday, already underway at the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow,
00:06our second major of this year in golf.
00:09Our second round has now started.
00:12Some notable round one scores were DRS, some of the main storylines from Thursday in Charlotte.
00:19Mudballs affecting play.
00:21Of course, the PGA of America announcing on Wednesday,
00:24despite the tremendous amount of rain early in the week in Charlotte,
00:29there would be no lift clean and placed.
00:33This was a major championship, after all, drew the ire of many golfers yesterday,
00:38including the mild-mannered Scotty Scheffler,
00:40who went off on that decision in his post-round press conference.
00:44And because of it, perhaps, a lot of our big names, a lot of our stars in golf,
00:49got off to a slow start in round number one.
00:52If you look at the leaderboard right now, especially near the top,
00:55probably some names you don't recognize, or at least some names you haven't seen in a while,
01:00like our round one leader, Jonathan Vegas, finishing with five birdies in his final six holes,
01:05including three in a row to end.
01:08He started on the back, ended on seven, eight, and nine with those three consecutive birds.
01:13Seven under par, 64 in round number one to be the leader in the clubhouse after the opening 18.
01:19Yeah, like lift clean and place, right?
01:21Like, I don't understand why they can't do that with extenuating circumstances.
01:25We're not telling them, like, we're going to slice a golf ball into the woods,
01:28lift clean and place it in the woods.
01:29Like, it's the fairway.
01:30Like, you pipe a drive 350 right down the middle,
01:33and you end up with all mud on your golf ball.
01:34That's not your fault.
01:35That's the course management fault here.
01:37So the fact that they can't pick the golf ball up,
01:39clean it up, and put it down in the fairway that's already manicured,
01:42that doesn't make sense to me.
01:43I know the purity of the game, don't touch the golf ball.
01:45I get all that.
01:45But again, you can't do that in the rough.
01:47In the fairway, you should absolutely be allowed to do that.
01:50If the situation, you know, a lot of rain.
01:53Like, bad breaks happen in golf all the time.
01:55Like, ooh, you hit it behind a tree.
01:56It's a shame.
01:57Another two feet out, you could have a shot.
01:58That's your fault because you hit it in the woods.
02:00It's not your fault when you hit it into the fairway,
02:01and mud is on your golf ball.
02:03Get out of here with that.
02:04But again, Scotty Scheffler angry?
02:06You know that cyborg is ready to go on a Friday now
02:09with a vengeance here at the PGA Championship.
02:11And also, if you look at the odds market,
02:13still the favorite now to win it,
02:15even though he's two under and he's five shots back,
02:18be like, ah, that's Scotty.
02:19He might have that back by the end of today.
02:22Absolutely so, DRS,
02:24because despite having some issues
02:26with how the round played out,
02:28everybody in that superstar trio,
02:30Scotty, Rory, Xander, top three players in the world,
02:33making a double bogey on the difficult 16th hole yesterday,
02:37a lot of them blaming mud for that issue.
02:40Scotty still battled back on his back nine,
02:42which is the front nine at Quail Hollow to finish two under par.
02:47I'm going to take a little sprinkle on Scotty Scheffler under 69 and a half today,
02:51playing in the afternoon,
02:531.47 p.m. Eastern time to have a really good Friday,
02:57as it's a beautiful Friday in Charlotte,
03:00and the course continues to dry out.
03:02And Donnie,
03:03I think what you just summed up right there,
03:05in terms of the mud ball debate,
03:06it might seem asinine.
03:07It might seem trivial in a game of golf,
03:10but that was Scotty's exact point.
03:13We should not be getting punished for bombing a drive down the middle of the fairway.
03:17You talk about golf at its best,
03:19with the best players in the world,
03:21our reward for hitting a great shot should not,
03:24in essence,
03:25be a penalty,
03:27especially on this track.
03:28This isn't Lynx golf,
03:30where rain and bad weather is a part of the conversation,
03:33not here at Quail Hollow.
03:36So completely agree DRS,
03:38the PGA of America has not updated the lift clean in place.
03:41I think now just hoping the course has been fully baked out.
03:45So Jonathan Vegas,
03:46seven under par,
03:47your round one leader,
03:48but still not the favorite at 18 to one.
03:51That is Scotty Scheffler at plus 330.
03:53Looking at those updated outright odds,
03:55Bryson DeChambeau plus 950,
03:57now live at 10 to one.
04:00Second best price DRS,
04:01battled it around yesterday in the afternoon,
04:03was even par,
04:05I believe has already teed off or is about to tee off.
04:10Let me see here for Bryson DeChambeau on this Friday at where things stand.
04:15Come on now.
04:16Yes,
04:16he just teed off and actually birdied his opening hole of the day to get to red figures.
04:22Still the second best price and still a golfer.
04:24Everybody was keying in on this week.
04:27Yeah.
04:27You take a look too.
04:28You talked about Scotty Scheffler and going under par,
04:30just a few strokes.
04:31They will cash a ticket.
04:32I like the fact that Jonathan Vegas is a nine Oh one tee time.
04:36You know what that means for Scotty Scheffler?
04:37Let's just say Vegas has a,
04:38a really good round at two under he's nine under Scheffler looks at that and goes,
04:42well,
04:43I'm seven back.
04:43I can't just say,
04:44well,
04:44let's par the golf course and play into the weekend.
04:47That means he understands the task at hand.
04:49I better cut into that lead,
04:50which means my minus two better be minus five or better.
04:53If I want to track down some of these leaders here.
04:55So the fact that the leader in round number one is teeing off early and Scotty's in the afternoon,
05:01he's going to get a good idea of what he needs to do because if Vegas comes back and the rest of the field comes back,
05:05that could be saying,
05:06you know what?
05:06I don't have to be that aggressive,
05:07but I think the case is the opposite here.
05:09I think he's got to be aggressive off the gate because he might be six,
05:12seven,
05:12eight shots back by the time he even tees it up today.
05:15Rory needs to go low as well.
05:17Three over in his opening round.
05:18Hour two next.
05:19A Friday and round number two already underway at golf.
05:24Second major of the year.
05:25It's the PGA championship live from quail hollow.
05:29So that's exactly where we go.
05:30Keith Stewart joining us here bright and early on this Friday morning.
05:34Keith cut day.
05:35Friday is already underway.
05:37We hope you are enjoying everything so far here.
05:40The PGA championship.
05:42Ben Donnie.
05:43Good morning.
05:44It is already hot and humid down here.
05:45And I tell you what,
05:46the green mile is going to get super steamy this afternoon.
05:49This cut line sitting right about plus one plus two is going to be very
05:54exciting.
05:54When you consider the closing holes here at the quail hollow club.
05:58We've got some guys going low already as the course continues to dry out in
06:03Charlotte,
06:04Max Homa six under to his first 10 holes here in round number two over par
06:10yesterday.
06:10Now four under par for the tournament.
06:12Just a few shots back.
06:15Of course,
06:15he is a well-known name on the PGA tour and in the golf world.
06:19But Keith,
06:19one of the stories of the opening round Thursday,
06:22the big guns struggling in a leaderboard that featured some names.
06:26We probably haven't seen and heard from in a while or some guys that we
06:30hardly even know of,
06:31unless you are the staunchest of PGA tour fans.
06:35What did you make of the start to the opening round at the 2025 PGA
06:39championship yesterday?
06:41Well,
06:42you know what,
06:42Ben,
06:42you're right.
06:43Round one,
06:44there's a lot of no names near the top of that leaderboard,
06:46but from a sports grid perspective,
06:48from a read the line perspective,
06:50it was absolutely electric.
06:51The way that Johnny Vegas closed yesterday,
06:5330 on his back nine closes with three birdies,
06:58three wild birdies,
06:59nonetheless to steal the first round leader.
07:01I mean,
07:02that's what our viewers are talking about right there.
07:04I'm sure there were tickets on cam Davis.
07:06I'm sure there were local tickets on Ryan Gerrard,
07:08the North Carolina native and Johnny Vegas comes in,
07:11rolls the dice,
07:12right?
07:13Goes full craps on everybody.
07:14And this takes it,
07:16takes those tickets away.
07:18So from a betting perspective,
07:19I thought it was electric to finish yesterday.
07:22I was running around thinking this is fantastic.
07:24And all the other writers,
07:25they're all like,
07:26who are these guys?
07:26I'm like,
07:27who cares?
07:27I said,
07:28Johnny Vegas is about to cash a triple digit number today for
07:31first round leader.
07:32This was awesome.
07:34By the way,
07:34fantastic stuff from the fan of the sports book.
07:36Also just taking a look at the live odds here,
07:38boy,
07:38they update them really quick on the odds,
07:40but also the updates to where the golfer is on the golf course,
07:43showing Colin Morikawa in the penalty here on hole 18.
07:46And he drops from a 14 to one to an 18 to one.
07:48But Keith,
07:49I want to talk top of the leaderboard right now,
07:51not necessarily on the stroke advantage,
07:53but just on the leaderboard for the odds.
07:55Scotty Sheffley's dropped to a three to one,
07:56hasn't taken the golf course yet.
07:58The expectations of a big round,
08:00but also the little bit of a controversy where he was upset yesterday in
08:04his post round press conference.
08:05Talk a little about Scotty Sheffley here on what he said yesterday and
08:08how that might pertain to his round today.
08:11Well,
08:11Donnie,
08:11you know what?
08:12There's no doubt that he probably shot the highest number he could
08:14yesterday and he was two under par.
08:16The consistent Scotty was a little inconsistent at times,
08:19but he's still doing all of the things.
08:21The one thing that kind of let him down yesterday was the putter.
08:23And that's,
08:23what's been so good lately and why he went absolutely nuclear in Dallas
08:27and beat the field by eight at the CJ cup.
08:29But you know what?
08:30I know what you're talking about.
08:32Those guys,
08:32he and Xander were very upset about mud on the golf ball and everything.
08:36The fact of the matter is,
08:37is that this is a major championship.
08:38Only one time in the history of all four of them.
08:40Have we used lift clean in place?
08:43And the idea that they needed preferred lies,
08:46just,
08:46I just don't think it was necessary yesterday.
08:49You know,
08:49a lot of the media was commenting on what Scotty was bringing up.
08:52But the fact of the matter is,
08:53is that had Scotty hit it down the middle of the fairway on 16 and ended up
08:56at a divot,
08:57he'd had a hip.
08:57He'd have to hit it from the divot.
08:59That's just the rules of golf.
09:00If you want to change them,
09:01that's fine.
09:02But Kerry Haag and the championship team,
09:04they're just dealing with the,
09:05you know,
09:05the hand that they're dealt.
09:07They got five inches of rain in five days,
09:08but the golf course was still very,
09:10very playable.
09:11And as it evolves,
09:12one of the things that you want to keep an eye on,
09:14the fairways are still somewhat soft.
09:16The approaches,
09:16which is just that area,
09:17just prior to the green are still somewhat soft.
09:20The sub air systems have really dried these greens out.
09:22These guys,
09:23they're going to be huge bounces on the greens.
09:25They're going to have to take on those front approaches.
09:26There's going to be a lot of guessing going on.
09:29Scotty should have started yesterday and said,
09:31you know what?
09:31I got to start calculating what's going on with this golf course,
09:34rather than complaining about it.
09:36Let's hope Keith,
09:37that the mud ball controversy through round one at the PGA championship
09:41starts to slide on this Friday.
09:43As you said,
09:44hot and humid and the course continues to dry out.
09:47Scotty Scheffler in that mega group,
09:49the world's top three,
09:50Scheffler,
09:50McElroy and Shuffley.
09:52They tee off in round number two at 1 47 PM Eastern time.
09:56And Keith,
09:57oftentimes when we have you here to preview a major championship,
10:00a PGA tour event,
10:02Scheffler is incredibly short compared to the field,
10:05not at the start of the tournament,
10:07but those live odds.
10:08Now,
10:09Scotty three to one after an opening round 69,
10:13two under par.
10:14But as Donnie said,
10:15has not taken a course just yet on this Friday,
10:18the next best price,
10:20Bryson DeChambeau.
10:21So it's 16 to one who entered the tournament with the third shortest
10:25number at plus 700 Bryson,
10:27even par yesterday,
10:28one under today.
10:30Keith,
10:30we mentioned Max Homa red hot right now.
10:33Colin Morikawa,
10:34still a good Friday round going here in round number two.
10:38There's a lot of value in a live outright odds board.
10:41Give us a couple of golfers.
10:43You will be keying in on throughout the duration of this weekend.
10:47Well,
10:47you know what,
10:47this morning you saw a couple of rabbits go out quick.
10:50I know we mentioned Max Homa.
10:51Terrell Hutton went out quick.
10:52He went to the green mile and he had a lot of trouble on 18.
10:55You talked about Colin Morikawa.
10:56He's having trouble on 18.
10:58The guys that you want to look for,
10:59the guys that are going off the back first,
11:02and maybe they get through that green mile before the wind kicks up.
11:05You know,
11:05a guy that I had my eye on after yesterday's round was John Rahm.
11:08He played very,
11:09very solid golf and he's sitting right there in the teens around the number
11:12that he started the week at,
11:14but we're one round shorter into the tournament.
11:16He might be an investment that'd be worth a lot of possibility right now.
11:19Rory is nine back.
11:21If that number got up into the thirties,
11:23maybe even into the forties before he tees off,
11:25that might be an option because he's won here four times,
11:27but I wouldn't sleep on the number right now for Max Homa.
11:30Don't forget the fact that he won here.
11:32It was his first tour win back in 2019.
11:35He won the Wells Fargo.
11:36And on top of that,
11:38even throughout all of his struggles of the last couple of years in 2023,
11:41he finished eighth year in 2024.
11:43He finished eighth year.
11:45You know what?
11:45He is a guy that you're going to get a good number on right now.
11:48That's probably the best investment that long-term looking at his history
11:52could pay off.
11:54I think it's a great point,
11:55Keith.
11:55He's two back right now of Jonathan Vegas,
11:58who has won over through his opening four holes of his second round,
12:01around one leader.
12:03Homa is four under right now,
12:05two shots back.
12:06He is six under today.
12:07He's 30 to one to win the PGA championship at this moment.
12:11There could be some good cash out opportunities throughout the weekend as well.
12:16Keith Stewart.
12:17We appreciate everything this week.
12:19Live from Charlotte at Quail Hollow here on the early line.
12:23We wish you the best.
12:24Enjoy this Friday.
12:25Enjoy the weekend in Charlotte.
12:27I cannot wait for this cut line this afternoon,
12:29guys.
12:29The wind's going to come up and the green mile is going to take some guys down.
