Rob Gregson talks about how the Pittsburgh Steelers could suddenly have competition for the services of future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers, after some unexpected NFL news over the weekend.

00:00It's felt like a foregone conclusion for weeks that Aaron Rodgers would be a member of the
00:04Pittsburgh Steelers, but following the sudden retirement of a Pro Bowl quarterback, things
00:09might be changing. Ever since Aaron Rodgers met with the Steelers brass in a private visit that
00:14quickly was leaked by someone in the Steelers organization, it has felt like Aaron Rodgers
00:20would be a certified Pittsburgh Steeler in 2025. Obviously, there was then the throwing session
00:27between he and DK Metcalf, and we've received subtle yet steady breadcrumbs the whole time
00:33from Art Rooney, Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan, you name it, that Aaron Rodgers is likely to come
00:40to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But what he, and apparently nobody knew what was coming, was
00:44Derek Carr's sudden retirement on Saturday, which now leaves the New Orleans Saints with a rookie
00:51second-round pick named Tyler Shuck as their potential starting quarterback. So what we really
00:56have to analyze here is, would Aaron Rodgers consider going to the New Orleans Saints over
01:01the Pittsburgh Steelers? The first thing is money. Now that the Saints no longer have to pay Derek
01:07Carr because he's retired, they can suddenly lure Aaron Rodgers away and incentivize him with a better
01:14deal than the Pittsburgh Steelers. And I understand Aaron Rodgers said that he would only play for $10
01:19million or maybe less on the Pat McAfee show. Let's be honest here. He has won maybe at most two years
01:27left of certified starting caliber play in the NFL. He is not going to settle for anything less than he
01:33thinks he's worth. So that circumstance alone could intrigue him with the New Orleans Saints. But the
01:40Pittsburgh Steelers have put themselves into a pickle. Now that they have traded away George Pickens,
01:45if you look at both offenses, the Saints are maybe better, if not equal, than the Steelers in terms of
01:54their personnel. You go along the offensive line, they just used high draft capital on a rookie
02:00offensive tackle. They drafted an offensive tackle last year. Their wide receiver trio of Chris Olave,
02:06Rashid Saeed, and Brandon Cooks is night and day, head over heels, much better than the Pittsburgh Steelers,
02:12which is DK Metcalf, Robert Woods, and Calvin Austin III. So if you're the New Orleans Saints,
02:19you have potentially more money to offer and better weapons. We didn't even talk about the
02:24running back position where they have Alvin Kamara versus whatever it's going to be in Pittsburgh's
02:28backfield between Caleb Johnson, Jalen Warren, and Kenneth Gainwell. So this situation could be of
02:35sudden intrigue to Aaron Rodgers. Now, in the end, who offers the better situation or the better
02:42chance at winning a Super Bowl? It is undoubtedly the Pittsburgh Steelers. You have a built-in culture,
02:48a built-in standard, and one of the best defenses in the entire NFL that just got reloaded from this
02:54year's NFL draft. Obviously, the Saints defense is a complete mess. The organization has not been
03:00successful ever since Sean Payton left. So the Steelers definitely, definitely still had the leg up,
03:06and all signs still point to Rodgers joining Pittsburgh, but the sudden retirement of Derek
03:12could throw a wrench in things.
