00:00High above the city of Townsville, the unofficial capital of North Queensland and the home this
00:08weekend for the Superagen 400 and the V8 supercars. So the Dunlop race has been taken care of for
00:15this day and we've still got of course the top 10 shootout and the V8 supercars race 20 of the
00:20series. So 26 degrees at the moment. We're nudging towards that expected top of 27. Shouldn't be too
00:26hard to get there and little wind to speak of. Conditions perfect. Barrettes? Yeah and Tim Slade's
00:31enjoying the Matty too. A top 10 performance in qualifying. Tim well done. It was celebrated in
00:35the garage here because that is an outstanding result for the team with the young car. Top 10,
00:40that was a poll. I think we had the same excitement post-session that we did in Homebush last year.
00:47No I mean that was an awesome feeling. I know we're in the top 10 and we qualified higher at Darwin but
00:53yeah it means a little bit more when it's going into a top 10 shootout and also it's my first
00:58shootout here at Townsville. So that's pretty cool and you know it's a great result for everyone at
01:04Erebus and also HHA. Well done. Make the most of it Tim. Enjoy it. Thanks Barrettes. Cheers mate.
01:09So Tim Slade the only E63 AMG inside the top 10. There are four Ford Falcons.
01:21Five Commodores and like I say the Erebus Motorsport of Tim Slade. Huge crowds. Just went for a dive outside
01:29while the Dunlop race was on and it's just busy absolutely everywhere and this event caters for
01:34everyone. Right at the top of the show Barrette showed us how the vantage points right around
01:39this circuit are some of the best that we get on the calendar and that's the reason why this has
01:44become such a big event. So David Reynolds is inside the shootout. All four Ford Performance
01:49racing cars will be there. The two Davison brothers will be inside the top 10 the first time this year
01:55together. Alex will be the first man out in the top 10 shootout for the Gildwein Falcon.
02:07So now it's the race for pole position qualifying done. Shane Van Gisburgh and the provisional
02:11pole sitter. Ten men left to determine who will start from the front of the grid. The most interesting
02:17thing about the top 10 that we will look at shortly is the fact that no Red Bull Racing Australia
02:23Commodores are there. Jamie Winkup and Craig Lowndes both qualifying outside the top 10
02:28for this race. Let's take a look at this circuit. So Cropo, they've got 2.86 kilometers all to
02:33themselves. Yes and it's a track that's quite difficult to set up for Matt because you've got
02:38the big fast open space of the run down to turn two, 255 kilometers an hour and then there's a lot
02:43of curb action pretty much from turn three in that red sector that you see in the middle sector,
02:48sector two, extremely busy. You've got to get the car to stop, turn, stay off the concrete walls,
02:54ride those bumps and ride the curbs. On board now looking at Jason Bright and the team BOC entry.
02:59He'll take his spot in the grid. Four of the Ford Performance racing cars are in this top 10.
03:04That's going to make for a nightmare afternoon for Red Bull Racing Australia later on in the afternoon
03:09when we get to our first 200k race. Which is exactly what FPR want. Exactly. This is very interesting
03:15because it's the first time that we'll see soft tires applied to the cars. They're allowed to use
03:20the soft tire in this top 10. So no one, they ran second hand soft tires yesterday but have had to
03:27use the hard tires in qualifying. So this is a totally different demand. And the 20 year old Kiwi
03:33Scott McLaughlin is one of the few in the field after practice to say that his car is comfortable
03:38on both compounds. It's a big point because car behavior changes enormously from tire to tire. Remember we
03:44went through a phase for example Ford Performance Racing which is the outfit that builds this car
03:48on screen here at the moment. They went through a phase where they could make their cars work on
03:52one tire and not the other in years gone by. Getting the car to consistently perform across both
03:58sometimes is a little bit of a challenge. Now we've seen some strong performances from Alex
04:02earlier in the year. He qualified fifth for race number 10 when we're in Western Australia Barbagallo Raceway.
04:08And this has been a good performance so far today. So in the garage there that's David Reynolds with
04:13his back to camera on the left. Charlie Schwerkolt is the team owner on screen there at the moment.
04:19Rusty French, co-owner of Ford Performance Racing, just chiming in there for a chat.
04:24Well they have a quick chat before this lap and Alex heads out. I'll run you through who is in the top
04:2910. Shane Van Gisbergen qualified first. Mark Winterbottom, Fabian Coulthard, James Courtney,
04:34Will Davison, Alex's younger brother. David Reynolds, Jason Bright, Scott McLaughlin,
04:40Tim Slade and Alex the 33 year old who's already posting his best ever qualifying performance at
04:46this circuit. Of course he didn't race here last year. He qualified 18th back in 2009 and he was
04:53almost on the podium in his last race that he had here two years ago when he finished 4th.
04:58And I for one am thankful that Alex Davison is back in the category. He's a good guy. He's a good
05:05solid racer. And hopefully the results start coming to him. I totally agree. And a little bit of the
05:10driving style of a V8 supercar versus the Porsches that he's been so good in over the years is a little
05:15bit of the complexity of this game and trying to adjust the way he thinks about these sorts of cars.
05:21He needs to get this organised now because the way you fade the tyre near is the important part of
05:26warming it up to start this lap. So what you're saying there is that he started at pace very
05:32early late. So it suggests that the tyre pressures are up for this lap. He was the runner-up to Johnny
05:37Reed last for the Carrera Cup when he last ran here. And the pioneer here is he tries to determine how
05:44far you can get a car down there on a brand new soft tyre into the braking area. Oh there the
05:49judgment calls that are very hard. It's total intuition when it comes to making that determination
05:55because no one's had a brand new soft tyre on this weekend. Turn three and turn four he's heading east now.
06:03Keep an eye on the turbo speed. Best qualifier of the year was fifth at Barbagello Raceway. Just
06:09kicks up a little bit of dust on the outside of turn six. It's looked good so far. He's been right
06:14at the limit but not over it. He's nearly run out of kerb in a couple of spots. He's brushed up
06:18against the concrete wall. I love this spot here. The shift from third to fourth. The Carr's at the
06:23absolute maximum into the braking area at the second intermediate at turn 11. 180 up to 210. Fifth back
06:30to second for 70 k's an hour around turn 11. Then turn 12. That's where James Moffat found some trouble
06:38in the earlier session. So Alex Davison's done a good job here. It was just enough on the edge
06:44and it will reflect in the time. It'll be a good one. A 1.13. 1.3. He did a 1.13. 8.5.
06:51He didn't wait so when you come back. Scales at garage 16 please. That's Campbell Little there.
06:57So he did a 1.13. 8.5 to get into the top 10 shootout and of course the first thing you
07:02you want to do is beat that time in the shootout. You can't control what anyone else does.
07:06That's exactly right Max. So that's a good marker to set. The reason I had a little chuckle in the
07:11middle of that lap is they used, he used every little bit of road. There was not a skerrick of road
07:17left out of turn two or turn three. It was a very committed performance from Alex Davison.
07:22Wes McDougall in the foreground there inside Erebus Motorsport. Here's their man Tim Slade car number 47
07:28heavy haulage Australia. Terrific qualifying performance for race 18 in the Northern Territory
07:33but as you heard Tim say a few moments ago in that interview it's a bit different when you get the
07:37ticket into the shootout. It's a little prize in itself to be celebrated. Another first for this team
07:42for 2013. He's also starting the lap very late. Confirmation that Andrew Thompson will be in this
07:50car with Tim Slade again for the Endurance Cup. They finished in the top 10 at Bathurst last year.
07:57Came off turn 13 in first gear then to launch the car but runs out of breath and has to find second
08:03still with a bit of load on the car coming off the corner. Of course everything's different in 2013.
08:09now behind the wheel of an E63 AMG. Love that part of the circuit how it pushes them so wide
08:17coming barreling down that main straightaway. Flat out in sixth gear. He needed that gear
08:24to stop the car then. You heard that rev flare you heard the engine
08:30flaring the revs on the way into turn three because he had defeated a gear it was not going to stop.
08:35A little bit more conservative through turn six than Alex Davison. Again big engine rev an engine
08:42breaking the price stopping it for turn seven.
08:46So never qualified better than 14th here in Townsville.
08:52It was on the radio then which is unusual. Mistake at 11 that's costly. So that really hurt.
08:58I think the last bloke I heard on the radio in a top 10 shootout and that was the gears of Backurst was it?
09:05And he yeeharted coming into the chase. Coming down straight.
09:07Yeah although I don't think Tim was yeeharing then whatever the message was.
09:11So flag out job done. Mistake in the braking area at turn 11.
09:1514th. Good lap there. I didn't hear you on the radio. What happened there?
09:21I've got a really bad vibration. It's almost down a lot from the sound of the cylinder but I'm not sure what it was.
09:29This is a replay of turn 11 so vibration was the issue and I'm glad Wes couldn't hear it either.
09:35Yeah exactly we both looked at each other but the interesting thing for Tim one of the things to learn
09:40is don't make a radio call on that lap. He can report it after the lap's finished. It actually ruined his lap.
09:46He was slightly up. He would have just beaten the Alex Davison lap at that point and ended up being 7 tenths slower.
09:52So there's no there's no use doing that at that time. Certainly not as though Wes can do anything about it
09:58other than write it down which he could do a minute and a half later anyway.
10:02So this young man won the Dunlop series last year as we know he was the winner of the Dunlop round
10:08at this circuit last year. And now he comes here to this spectacular backdrop. Scott McLaughlin,
10:16a 20 year old Kiwi from Christchurch, already posted his first career win at Pukekohe,
10:23still searching for his first career pole position. What I like about the notion of just
10:27having a run a couple of corners before the lap starts, you get feedback from the car. The tyres tell
10:33lots of grip levels available to you. So it gives you a little cue to get a feeling for what you're
10:38dealing with as we look at him under brakes. Second gear, right hand to turn two. So Scotty by doing
10:42those last couple of corners gets an immediate seat of the pants feel for what he has to deal with.
10:47So 0.09 outside the first sector time. Alex Davison, the quickest man out there so far.
10:59Pretty conservative under brakes at turn two, which probably quite smart. He was very conservative
11:04where he put his foot on the back. So it hasn't been as aggressive, but sometimes that's clever.
11:09Both GRM cars this weekend have gone through there without any dramas. They're comfortable there
11:15at that spot. Turn seven. So a green box. He's turned a 0.09 deficit into a 0.08 gain.
11:22And to Mark's point earlier about Tim Slade, he's only fractionally quicker Scott McLaughlin,
11:27only by the tiniest margin over what Slade achieved. So whatever the vibration was,
11:31can't have been a big deal. Tiny adjustment of the steering wheel as he heads up to the final turn
11:37with the lights flashing. Scott McLaughlin will go to the top with a 1.12.9.
11:43Good job. Good job, mate. P1 at the moment.
11:48Richard's very conservative, isn't he? Good job, mate. P1.
11:52Scotty McLaughlin's on the line, we hope. Matty White here. Scott, you'd be happy with that under 1.13.
11:58Yeah, mate. That was pretty good. The car felt really nice. And yeah, I'm just enjoying being out here.
12:03It's really good. You said that the car was comfortable on softs and hards as well.
12:08Give us your confidence level at the moment for the rest of the weekend, the rest of the day.
12:13At the moment, mate. I'm in the top ten. I can't complain. I'm pretty, it's high. But, you know,
12:18I'm the rookie. I can't be too high. Otherwise, everyone gets angry.
12:20Life's good, mate. Enjoy it. Cheers, mate.
12:26So now to Team BAC's Jason Bright. So Scott McLaughlin setting the benchmark. 1.12.9.9.
12:32Already on the podium at the top step. This year is Jason, the 40-year-old, three-time pole
12:40sitter and two-time race winner in season 2013. And boy, he hasn't been locked up some miles late.
12:45And goodbye left-hand mirror. So he just dragged the mirror on the concrete wall there and plucked it off.
12:50I knew that needed in the shootout. So instantly, a tenth of a second up.
12:56So he's just come back from Le Mans in France, the 24-hour race where he finished 10th in class.
13:01Very difficult conditions. And against the very sad backdrop of all of us having lost a friend in
13:08Alan Simonson in that incident over there. But he loved the experience of driving on that very
13:14complex racetrack. He's done some miles in the last couple of months. Jason Bright. He's got two
13:19green boxes now. So it's nearly a tenth and a half up to the second timing intermediate. Turn 11.
13:24He's managed to pull it up. The car's sliding a bit through there. He's going to be very close to the
13:29time, if not fractionally in front of the time, achieved by Scott McLaughlin.
13:33Sliding champion, of course. Sliding a lot at 11. That's the only thing that bothers me about the lap.
13:42And he's got him. Just good job, Brady. New run for now, mate. Good job.
13:481.12.9.0 versus a 1.12.9.9. That's how close it's getting in this fight for pole position at the
13:55Supergent Townsville 400. Jason Bright leads the way.
14:02Well, this one should be a pretty wicked ride for us at home and for the fans here
14:09at the Townsville Street Circuit because David Reynolds has this track
14:14all by himself. Comes off a Darwin weekend where he had two out of three pole positions. He got his
14:19first career pole at this venue last year on the Sunday. Runner-up, of course, in an epic
14:26Bathurst last year. And everything's starting to come to David Reynolds at Car 55 at this stage of the season.
14:35This is one of the locations, Matt, where Davey clicks. Remember the run that he had in 2011 in
14:41the Kelly car. Burnt the rear tyres of it. But he had the elbows up and he was guns blazing all weekend.
14:46So it's a place that he generally does a pretty good job at. So we'll see what he can produce now.
14:50He's been the man of the moment in recent qualifying.
14:59And he also took the opportunity to get started pretty quickly. Three or four corners from home there.
15:05So he had a feel for the car. He can't stop it. That's a disaster. That's the lap done.
15:10He lost it way back from home. He just couldn't stop that car quick enough.
15:16And it was lurching and lurching towards the fence down at turn two.
15:21Nathaniel Osborne on the right hand side. Alex Davison watching on as well.
15:26So brutal red box for Davey Reynolds.
15:38Just a reminder too, if you buy a ticket early for our next event at Ipswich and jump on the V8
15:42supercars website, you might be able to be in this seat and win a hot lap with Davey.
15:46Just ask him to brake a bit earlier.
15:48Yeah, that'd be the first thing as you get in.
15:50He'll be very angry with himself. The car's been very good.
15:53He was being super aggressive. The soft tyre, you don't know where you can put your foot on the brake.
15:58You're a pioneer. And they put more camera on the car normally when you put the soft tyre on.
16:02So the footprint, the effective tyre footprint on the road is less.
16:06The car was very unstable on the brakes. It's a mistake that's easily made.
16:10And a very big penalty that's been paid there. 13.7 to 12.9 is a long way away.
16:17Rod Nash looking on. He won't be happy with that. Dave, have a look at this. This is the instability.
16:23Dave Mark Scaife. Mate, that was really unstable at turn one. Big penalty for that one, buddy.
16:28And I lost him. Actually, I think it was the white line that also contributed to that as well.
16:38When you looked at the replay there, you could see that the left rear was sitting right on top of that shiny white line down there.
16:45That wouldn't have helped the cause. The third of four FPR cars inside the top ten now heads out.
16:51So Will Davison, 30 years of age, a Bathurst champion.
17:00And Will has already scored a win this season, the first of forwards in 2013 at Pukekohe.
17:09He hasn't had a pole, and that's what he's chasing right now.
17:11See, he stayed away from that white line. So, oh, but he's still got rear locking late in the stop.
17:20He managed to catch it, still grab the apex. That was a minor miracle, but that was right on the limit.
17:25That gives a bit of an illustration as to what some of the boys have been complaining about.
17:32He's got away with it on the timer as well.
17:34So he's got a green box for his trouble, despite having skated in there on the rear brake MotoGP style.
17:43Pretty committed lap.
17:44Tell by the body language of the car on the exit there of the fast right-hander at Turn 6.
17:50What a curve through 7 and 8.
17:54Next marker coming up.
17:56It's another green box, so .15 under the time of Jason Bright.
18:01It's a good call because so many people have had so much trouble down there.
18:09It's teetering right on the grip edge in the rear of the car.
18:12One corner remaining now for Will Davison.
18:15First gear, lit it up and he grabbed second.
18:18That's Jason Bright, top right of screen.
18:21Yes, 1.12.7.
18:23Good job, buddy. That's a tenth and a half quicker than Brighty.
18:25Good job.
18:26Wow. Well, that could have been anything down at Turn 2.
18:32And that was a huge save.
18:35Watch this.
18:38Watch his hands.
18:38Great bit of drive.
18:40Absolutely fantastic.
18:40He did a really nice job of wrestling it, didn't he?
18:43Yeah.
18:43But it was interesting that he positioned the car initially away from that line that David was right on top of.
18:48As we now go to James Courtney, car number 22.
18:52Great run for him.
18:52The best of the season so far in the Northern Territory.
18:56Unreliability in the last race.
19:00But two podiums in the first two races and a pole position.
19:03He's been leading the charge at turning the corner this season for the Holden Racing Team.
19:12This is the first chance you've had to see today, car number 22.
19:18And you're a rugby league fan, you'll notice that he's sporting the blue State of Origin colours,
19:23which is again in Queensland.
19:26We'll spin off the final corner in first gear.
19:28You can see the dashboard light up on the car.
19:34It's turn one, which is 100% flat, sixth gear.
19:38It's turn two, and he's also got some rear locking here at the back of the car,
19:42chattering under brakes.
19:44Got away with it a little tidier than Will.
19:50Has typically had a pretty good run on street circuits.
19:54One of the guys to see success on this race track.
19:56Can the car manage?
19:58It's largely been the domain of Jamie Winkup over the years.
20:03Yeah, he won on the first weekend on the Sunday here.
20:05In fact, he started on the front row for the first race in 2009, but had a DNF, an engine fail.
20:16As he managed to claw it back in the second sector, he has by one one-hundredth of a second.
20:20He's in this game.
20:24He kept the left-hand side of the car away from that concrete verge there,
20:27but it was parked up on top of the paint.
20:29Exactly, and Will Davison was only the fourth fastest in this last sector,
20:33so Courtney has the chance to knock him off now.
20:37So the benchmark time is 1.12.75.
20:40James Courtney continues a good run of qualifying, but will not knock.
20:44Can I hit the red button?
20:45Davison off the top.
20:47Stay online and cool the tires down gently, cool the tires down gently.
20:53First question of the afternoon will be, what's the red button?
20:55James Courtney will hopefully be able to hear us.
20:59JC, you got us.
20:59It's Matty White here.
21:00Give us your summary of that lap.
21:03Yeah, I can hear you.
21:04It's pretty noisy, but the lap was pretty bad in the last part of the lap.
21:09I just couldn't get out of the last corner, but all in all, third so far, so see how we end up.
21:15Hey, good luck getting out of this state alive with your New South Wales colors on your bonnet too.
21:20Oh, go the Blues, go the Blues.
21:22He doesn't mind a fight, so seven down, three to go.
21:27Shane Van Gisbergen, Mark Winterbottom.
21:29After the break, Fabian Coulthard will be on track in the top ten shootout.
21:38Lockwood Commodore of Fabian Coulthard out there, fifth in the championship so far this season.
21:44Three race wins, two pole positions, six times he has started on the front row of the grid.
21:50So far, now he's the third last man out.
21:56With Will Davison leading the way, 1.12.75 is the time to beat to get pole here for this afternoon's race.
22:05And he started his run much earlier than anybody else by a long way, Matt.
22:10He was basically on it from the way out of turn four.
22:14So he's been warming the tire and the brake as the other guys have had, but he's basically at race pace from halfway around the previous lap.
22:21A little bit of rear locking late in the stop, but he still managed to get right to the target.
22:27Was Becky's partner on screen there a moment ago.
22:30He's had a great run in qualifying so far this year.
22:32His average looks good.
22:33He's position two average behind Jamie Wincup for the season so far.
22:38He lost a spot in the championship chase in the Northern Territory.
22:42It wasn't a great weekend for him.
22:45This gives you a great illustration of how much wheel work's required to get through there cleanly at five and six.
22:50A little bit of curb here in both directions.
22:54This is seven and eight.
22:56Short shift.
22:57And then there's a big bump at Boundary Street here.
22:59Third to fourth, right up against the concrete wall.
23:02Here's the second timing marker, and he's fractionally slow.
23:05It's not enough to panic about yet.
23:07He's got one more sector to run.
23:08Two corners, and he's cleanly through here.
23:17Hit the apex marker.
23:18It's sliding in first gear.
23:20It'll be close.
23:23It's been close the whole way around.
23:24Oh, look at that.
23:301-12-7-5-1 versus 1-12-7-5-7.
23:35That is amazing, and it was a beautiful last sector.
23:38He didn't overdrive it, and the car was at its limit.
23:42Very good job.
23:43Which means only two men left.
23:51One of them is the final four performance racing Falcon of Mark Winterbottom.
23:56The other is the Techno Autosports Commodore, the VIP pet for his entry of Shane Van Gisberg.
24:01So both Will and Fabian have done a pretty good job of milking the maximum out here.
24:05If anything, Will was a bit too aggressive in the run into turn two.
24:09So this is going to be very, very difficult to try and knock off a 12-3 quarter at the moment.
24:14One minute, 12.75 for target time.
24:17We've made reference how Janie Winkuff's the dominant force of racers at this circuit.
24:21Well, Mark Winterbottom has just been a genius in terms of qualifying.
24:25He's had two pole positions here.
24:27Saturday in 2011, Sunday last year.
24:29In the last four races, he's been on the front row.
24:34Well, he grabbed the race win in the Northern Territory, and then there was the charge in race 19.
24:37The last race on the Sunday nearly got there.
24:39So he's got a momentum in his sails at the moment.
24:43He gained a championship spot.
24:45He's a critical breaking point here in two.
24:48Gets it stopped nice and straight.
24:52It might have been a fraction of conservative.
24:56Well, remember, he would have been sitting there.
24:58He would have seen what happened to David Reynolds and Will Davison at that spot.
25:02Maybe that played on his mind because he's a tenth of a second off now.
25:05Little anti-roll bar adjustment in the cockpit as well,
25:08just to get the car to tune to his liking.
25:11He's the slowest first sector of the lot.
25:16Well, he's seen so many people struggle into two.
25:18I think all your observations right, Matt, decided not to be too hungry down there,
25:22but he's pressing on with it now in sectors two.
25:24He's about to enter sector three.
25:27He's on the hard cut there in the shift from third to fourth gear,
25:32so it was out of breath.
25:33He's only qualified once outside the top ten in season 2013,
25:40and he will obviously stay in the ten here,
25:43but it's not going to be a rip-roaring lap enough to
25:46unsettle his teammate from the top of the list.
25:49So Will Davison will stay there with Mark Winterbottom at the moment.
25:531.12.9 puts him fourth with one man to come.
25:58Will Davison was very conservative on his lap in the last sector,
26:03so if there's any chance for Van Gisbergen to get him, that's it.
26:07Mark Winterbottom should be able to hear us.
26:11Hey, Frosty, it's Matty White here.
26:12Just tell us your thought process going down towards turn two there.
26:22I think he's trying to chat to us, but we can't hear you, mate,
26:25so we'll let you head back to the garage in fourth.
26:30One man to go, Shane Van Gisbergen.
26:32They've been on a real roll, the Techno Autosports guys.
26:38Jono Webb racking up the most points at our last round overall.
26:44Second most points taken out by this man.
26:46He had a second, an eighth, and a sixth in Darwin.
26:48Back-to-back poles to start the season at the Clipsal 500,
26:53including a race win.
26:55And there are similarities between that circuit and this one,
26:57so it's not surprising at this time of the year,
26:59with this kind of form, at this kind of place,
27:02to see this man having a crack as the last man out in the shootout.
27:05And he's a street fighter.
27:07He's always been good at this stuff.
27:08He slithered in a little bit on the rear brake into turn two there.
27:11He greases right up against the concrete wall on the exit.
27:15He gained two championship spots in the Northern Territory
27:19with that terrific run that you just described.
27:21He's nearly a tenth up in the first sector,
27:23so this is a fully committed, great start to the lap.
27:26He's part of a customer program from Triple Eight Race Engineering.
27:35This car engineered to Shane's liking by Blake Smith,
27:39and they've really put the Red Bull cars in the shade so far this weekend.
27:43That's probably as comfortable as any car has looked coming through turn six.
27:47He was a flat stick there and stuck to the ground.
27:51So he's up two green boxes.
27:52Will Davison will be getting a little bit nervous
27:55on the top right of screen with the FPR crew.
27:58The VIP Techno Autosports crew on your bottom right of screen.
28:02And Shane Van Gisbergen here should do the job
28:05and grab his third pole position of the season.
28:081.12.75, he makes it a 1.12.5.
28:16The final corner and used second gear.
28:18He's the only top runner that I noted then that actually came off there in second.
28:22Great run, well done.
28:26I think there's a little bit of hoo-haring.
28:28Well, that was a highly committed lap.
28:32The first part of the lap was very, very good.
28:35He was very good in the fast section in the middle.
28:37Great yield at 12.5.
28:39He's going to be hard to beat from there.
28:40He's got Will Davison next to him.
28:42The second row of the grid all out of Bradley Jones Racing.
28:45Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney fifth and sixth with McLaughlin.
28:49Alex Davison, Davey Reynolds and the Erebus Motorsport AMG of Tim Slade
28:55to start from 10th position.
28:58A huge day here at Townsville 400.
29:00We've still got the V8 Utes to come.
29:02Don't forget later on this afternoon a special live edition of V8 Extra
29:07just before race 20 of the series.
29:11We are live coast to coast on 7 Sport.
29:13I hope you're enjoying it as much as the big crowds here.
29:16It's nudged our predicted top of 27 degrees.
29:18Shane Van Gisbergen to start from pole position.
29:21So for the first time in two years,
29:29the Holden Commodore will start from pole position here at the Superton Townsville 400.
29:34The fourth pole of Shane Van Gisbergen's career in the third of the season.
29:38A dominant performance.
29:40It was such a clean lap.
29:42They continue a pretty good roll.
29:44So he will go out from P1.
29:49He'll have Will Davison next to him as we run you through the grid for this afternoon's 20th race.
29:54It's a 70 lap at 200 kilometers.
29:56And remember, they do it all again tomorrow.
29:58This is where the interesting stuff starts to happen.
30:01Craig Lowndes, second in the championship, 12th.
30:03Jamie Winkup, first in the championship, qualified 16th.
30:07That is the first time all season that Winkup has been outside the top 10
30:11and the first time ever at this circuit that he's qualified outside the top 10 as well.
30:16A lot of work to do for Red Bull Racing Australia,
30:18but not surprisingly, Barrette, a smiley Shane Van Gisbergen in front of you.
30:22Yeah, very happy indeed, Shane.
30:23Congratulations on pole position.
30:24You love these street circuits.
30:26Yeah, it's been good so far in this car.
30:27It's been great, but I didn't run soft tires until that lap.
30:31So it was a bit of an experience for me finding out what grip we had,
30:34but the car was awesome.
30:35The boys have done a great job in tuning it and also preparing me for qualifying.
30:40So it's been a struggle the last few rounds.
30:43Excuse me, so we got it right now.
30:45That's how you've got it all together.
30:46Enjoy pole position, Shane. Well done.
30:47Thanks a lot. Cheers.
30:48Yeah, great run.
30:49His teammate will start from position 17.
30:52Don't forget, in about an hour's time, a special edition of V8 Extra.
30:56Crompo and Scafie will take you through some great memories with Russell Ingle
31:00as he celebrates his record-breaking weekend.
31:02We know the S60 Volvo has been announced as the new car in 2014.
31:07Gary Rogers will tell us how they're going to make it work.
31:10What about Ford Performance Racing?
31:11Have they made it work after that drama in Darwin?
31:14We'll check into the FPR garage and over the barriers.
31:18Neil Crompton will do that world-famous grid walk and give you access like no other.
31:23As we look down at Townsville and remember, we've been going through some big moments
31:27as we've already passed now the halfway mark of season 2013.
31:31You can join us on Twitter.
31:32Just use the hashtag V8SC and let us know what you think.
31:35Well, what did Scott Pye think about his start to the season?
31:38Remember these?
31:43I remember going in and thinking, I bloody hope God's onside because it's in his hands.
31:47Oh, massive crash.
31:50Gone straight ahead at turn two.
31:51The approach to having a crash like my brake failure in Tasmania, that time before you hit
31:57the wall, it's scary.
31:58Fortunately, it's okay.
32:00It's the biggest one that Scott Pye will ever have.
32:02After the crash in Perth, definitely when I landed, I remember just burying my head and
32:12what has happened?
32:14And young Scott Pye, what an initiation to this category.
32:18I'd like to be remembered for maybe getting some results towards the end of this year rather
32:22than the accidents like that.
