00:00so this is it the last top 10 shootout of 2013 a critical moment in the championship and remember
00:11we want you to tell us who do you reckon's going to win out of the top four let's focus now on
00:16david reynolds the bottle of four first man out in the one lap dash three pole positions so far
00:22for 2013 and a breakthrough win he's generated the heat through the tires on the warm-up lap
00:28he takes on turn one that's where garth tander found the wall in qualifying and reynolds is away
00:34running down kevin coombs avenue here 230 kilometers an hour into the turn two chicane complex
00:41got to take a pile of speed out of it here big moment for david he only just recovered that
00:46so it launched off the curb flicked into a bouncing oversteer and that has burnt the best part of
00:52half to three quarters of a second out of his lap time
00:55now what he's got to do is settle down and still get back on with a tidy job because
01:02time still matters those that follow can make mistakes as well and if you drop your head now
01:08and miss the opportunity to complete the lap you could end up being 10th where you might have been
01:13able to buy a better position nonetheless battling for front grip couldn't get it turned there at turn
01:18eight either it was about 1.1 seconds away from the best sector time at that point so he's a long way
01:24away now it didn't stop then either dawn fraser avenue you can see it hanging on the rear brake
01:29into the left hander at turn nine so i don't think the tires have come up enough we talk about this a
01:33lot i'd be starting the lap earlier so that i've got an understanding of what level of grip is beneath
01:38you even if it's not what you want it to be understand what it is so davy lights it up with two corners
01:44remaining let's see what the number is and it's a shocker one minute 30.3 he'll be disappointed with that
01:51so that's over two seconds slower than his qualifying lap to get into the top ten pick up
01:59nathaniel osborne on the radio straight away so this is where it launched up onto two wheels you can
02:05see the opposite lock being applied to the steering right now so he's winding the lock into it to
02:10catch it slides all the way up onto the exit curb this is turn two about to arrive at three sideways
02:16here it is from on board bash crash launch slide dammit davy's on the line neil crompton hey mate
02:23that didn't look too pretty down at the turn two chicane tell us your story
02:27no mate it was uh it was hot it was horrible as um yeah i don't know what to say we changed the car
02:35from qualifying and it wasn't as good as the um qualifying so yeah we'll we'll learn we'll tune
02:41up for the race you'll be right thanks mate so next out is jonathan webb team techno darrell lee
02:48one race win next to his name in the v8 supercar championship it came at this circuit
02:54and he needs this this weekend because it's been a rough trot oh he's hit the wall straight away
03:02there's no grip out there the temperature's come up since qualifying so it's been a bit of time since
03:07the cars last ran so indication straight away that they may be asking more than is available
03:13out there at the moment so two guys in two consecutive laps have been caught out
03:17and that's still a long way away from the second second time that we saw in qualifying
03:25basically a second yeah 33.8 was the best that we aggression 33.9 was the best we saw in qualifying
03:31what a pity just knocks the wind out of your sails straight away at the start of the lap
03:36if not doing some damage as well i reckon even on the good laps we suck breath just watching cars
03:44go around there at turn eight every time they go through there i hold my breath this is that
03:48roller coaster ride under brakes into turn nine it's very unsettling in the car he's wide at nine
03:54he had to make a much bigger right hand turn then into turn ten two green boxes of course because
03:59of the slow lunch time for david he had a really good run at texas the circuit of the america's
04:07mid-year but since then he's only featured once in the top 10 in the qualifying session it's really
04:13got away from him so 129.6 for john o webb of course it's faster than david reynolds there's steve
04:2019 in and we wish john o and his wife kobe all the best as they prepare to welcome a little webb
04:29into the world he would have had to reset the throttle on that one yeah ouch once you get out
04:35there you just have a look again you just see how dirty it is it actually gets to the gutter
04:40so you're already grip limited the car's sliding and then the grip when you get out wider is worse so
04:45it sort of tends to lead you in there a bit like a magnet to that fence
04:48this is a great run from tony d'alberto he was up here with us commentating for the aussie racing
04:53cars in between qualifying and this shootout he's very relaxed and so he should be
04:58because uh he's delivered some pretty handy qualifying efforts this season including his
05:04career best his dad out where he qualified on the front row if you remember at winton
05:11so single car team they're out there punching with the big guys and
05:14let's see if tony can make this one stick he had that awkward incident 2011 round at the bus stop
05:22here where he made heavy contact with the wall but as you point out matt he's had some
05:25strong qualifying performances seventh on the saturday here last year alfa goma on the car
05:30this weekend flying the italian flags the parent company for hyflex his sponsor good job that was very
05:36nice work and a little bit of speculation regarding the future of this team for 2014 at the moment as
05:42they try and put together their program nice late braking into this second turn two three four
05:48complex and a good job to be the fastest of all the walkinshaw cars so if you think about it he's in
05:52the same garage as the hrt cars he's the highest placed car of that group so a little bit up not
05:58very much on jonathan webb flows the car nicely here but this we're saying before the real nuances of
06:06this racetrack he likes it doesn't he jonathan webb goes well here so does tony for whatever reason
06:12they like the layout they drive the car well here and they probably punched above their weight in terms
06:16that result well if you go back to the gold coast race the first race he qualified fourth and finished
06:24fourth there so very similar in terms of circuit width and bumps and the characteristics of the
06:30track itself so he feels pretty much at home at this kind of track mark's point's an interesting
06:36one because there are some places where inexplicably different drivers just click with them and and
06:42conversely there are some other places where they just can't get it together at all tony looks good
06:46here to complete this lap nice and tidy what sort of a number can he punch here and it's turned out to
06:53be a 29 8 p2 behind jonathan webb so that's three down seven to go coming up after the break the man
07:00who is third in the championship can mark winterbottom find pole position here as the shootout continues
07:06on seven
07:13what a massive moment this is for mark winterbottom the pepsi max crew fpr ford
07:19he's such a perfectionist when it comes to these shootout laps and he's underway through turn one
07:27nicely five pole positions for 2013 three race wins 124 points away from the championship lead
07:36he wants to stay in touch with wincup but he's locked it up there that was close he almost overran that
07:42that was right on the braking limit very very good breaking over those bumps and you can see the
07:48level of commitment already up by a quarter of a second this is the fast turn five so he approaches
07:54at 210 kilometers an hour in the mid corner in fourth gear it's 160 odd k's and he gets safely through
08:01that very tricky complex now turn eight where we just flinch every time safely through there coming up to
08:07the second timing intermediate we'll get an indication of how good this lap is this is a good lap he
08:13understands the importance of it look at that he's half a second nearly six tenths of a second up
08:18at the second reference point nine this is turn ten punches it out of there nice and straight gives
08:27himself a little bit of sighting room into this next right-hander
08:30this is all second gear it's looking like a late 28.
08:40did a 27.9 qualifying it's a 28.98 good job from mark winterbottom
08:45we'll just see how that backs up i don't think that's going to be anywhere near good though
08:53considering it's 27.3 fastest in qualifying for wincup that's very deep under brakes very good driving
09:00rear wheels were locked on the slide gathered it up very very good
09:08hey mark that was a big moment in the braking area into turn two mate
09:12yeah uh felt like a rally car she starts uh starts backing in so um if it looked big on tv you multiply it by ten
09:23exactly the little the little muscle downstairs starts going like that

09:34and guys just to the right there that man in the uh tan colored shirt is tim sendrick he's the
09:40president of penske racing operations now of those of you that follow motor racing and he's talking
09:45with rusty french co-owner of the team uh tim's been around in the american motor racing scene for a
09:49long time he's been heading up roger penske's operations in nascar and indycar for a very long
09:53period incredibly successful five indy car correction 15 indy 500 winners uh on their shelves with the
10:01trophies those guys have got we'll talk more about that later because i want to focus on the jason bright
10:05lap but that's been a big story this weekend aaron noonan made mention of tim's presence in the paddock
10:09earlier so bright is away four poles this year and two wins next to his name
10:18lean trot over the last couple of weeks though high aerial shot here of that
10:23chicane through turns two three and four that was where car five came in deep and heavy
10:28so he's three tenths adrift of winter bottom
10:31they were having a long hard look at data down in their garage just prior to the shootout to see
10:41where that they could could make a gain both he and his teammate fabian pulsar nice job through turn
10:45eight used a little bit of curb and flew the car on two wheels through there in the middle of the
10:50corner at turn eight's 95 kilometers an hour with 180 kilometer an hour approach so this is right on
10:58the web time basically at the moment it's very interesting to see how he finishes the
11:03lap off remember we've had a drama through turn 10 11 so it might actually be slightly better if he
11:08finishes his lap nicely a lot of noticeable pitch in this car as it accelerates it squats onto its rear
11:13and you can see the front of the nose of the car lifting up so they've worked hard to try and
11:18make sure it's got good drive control p3 so he's lost a little bit of time in the latter part
11:22so he's missed out there by two hundredths of a second
11:31so andrew edwards his engineer this is right at the very start of the lap a little replay here so
11:35used a lot of curb and gassed it up and rubbed the wall so that immediately has cost some time on
11:41the run down australia avenue you see the damage there on the right hand rear guard
11:46most of them donate the right side mirror on turn 13 but he went in a little bit too hard
11:55at the rear and did you notice that as andrew edwards was conveying the information to jason
11:59phil key the engineer for fabian was relaying it to him as well so they get an understanding of where
12:03they are so take a look at the numbers for craig lambs now 39 years of age done more than 500
12:09races won 94 of them but his last championship was 14 years ago 1999 and now he's just 20 points away
12:22from overtaking his teammate and putting the throttle down on perhaps another
12:27championship it would be his fourth that's the bus stop complex down to turn 11.
12:33so this is a huge moment this i'm just about to say matt this is a very important lap for lounges
12:42anybody see a 27 in these conditions at the moment or do you think it's going to stay in the 28s
12:46low 28 will probably do it don't you think yeah i don't think they're going to get into the 27s
12:51on the numbers we're seeing at the moment so the track's lost a little bit of pace that typically
12:55happens as the temp comes up lounges just literally wriggles that thing into turn one he got
13:00it stopped i don't quite know how he did it but he did he turned it in a bit early to do it
13:07oh he's on the rear brake again into turn two again he managed to wrestle it under control that
13:12was a bit nasty in the middle there though he had to really reset the direction of the car
13:21even sideways there it's very oversteering on the way into the corner meaning it's stiff in the back
13:26as soon as he turns it it wants to slide it's got great car control we've seen some of that car
13:31control shown off again this year as maddie said in contention for the first time in 14 years
13:38behind that big smile is a very very competitive world-class driver we've seen some of that
13:45effort this year this is the roller coaster at the end of
13:47that has a catastrophic effect that'll put him 10th we had to play catch-up scafie he had to play
13:58catch-up in the second sector and he just went way too hot he was up on winter bottom at that point
14:04he was up by 0.05 and this is where he got to keep hustling remember i made the reference to david
14:08reynolds having a similar drama you've just got to keep on trying to make lap time and see where you bob up
14:13here but that that was kind of coming it looked unstable under brakes two or three times before
14:18the moment good job finishing the lap and we'll get wade on the entry to pit lane
14:23the important thing is that he didn't hit and didn't do any damage so he's in the top 10
14:29that's a given look at this it's over that rise of the roller coaster there the breakout location's
14:34very hard craig lounge marks skate we just saw that little guy racing at the end of dawn fraser avenue
14:40we're just watching it on our screens now big moment mate yeah it was just locked up the rears
14:47just uh unfortunate but uh that's life certainly is that's a sort of reward and the risk that's
14:54attached to this place a very hard circuit to do a really nice lap of mate ah yeah it is going for
15:00something that's uh you know trying to get the maximum out of it just uh over the uh it's a little
15:04bit over the uh the edge but uh that's that's the way it goes good luck buddy uh four more drivers to
15:11come two of those are championship contenders here in the top 10 shootout the sydney 500
15:22fabian cool thought the fourth last man out in this top 10 shootout that's been dramatic
15:29it is headed by mark winter bottom 128.98 we've seen john o webb go jason bright tony dalberto
15:38david reynolds and craig lowndes who's currently in sixth
15:44let's see what the lockwood commodore has through this back chicane nice and smooth
15:50so winter bottom can only be fifth now so he's actually come up two spots so worst case scenario
16:00that's a big slide for fabian
16:05started this season without a pole position next to his name and he's racked up three and three race
16:11wins as well so it's been a good year for fabian cool tart
16:17it's been pretty rock solid
16:20his rookie win this is down so this is going to be in the realm of
16:25webb and bright his teammate and jonathan webb a little bit down there is too narrow from 10 to 11.
16:33under a tenth of a second 0.07 is the difference in the second sector
16:37the car doesn't look that settled either does it green tires might be a failure neil
16:43everyone's gone on green tires he might have been better on rotor tires for this one you can hear
16:47the tire chattering in the background so position four then for him and that's a 129.7
16:53looks like pretty diabolical out there back there mate
16:56bill keede that's a very good comment actually
16:59position for me number four fabian he was asking for that was the wicked slide
17:07so again mark winterbottom grabs another spot
17:11so that means will davison is the next man out
17:15and uh hats off to the gang at pepsi max performance racing to turn this car around
17:20between qualifying remember the last time you saw it it uh scattered all over the road like a meccano
17:26said they've taken it back into the pit paddock area put it back together and there he is taking his
17:31place in the shootout so that's big pressure and a big response from that crew
17:36heavy front end damage looked down and had a look at it tim edwards said you know we throw enough
17:41guys at it we'll get it fixed no dramas as mark winterbottom who's currently on top of this list
17:46so will who is showing really good consistent pace throughout the qualifying session and no doubt
17:59at fpr they need to find more pace because they know that wind cup is quick today
18:06sound like will started the lap in first gear but then it hit the red limiter on the shift between first
18:10and second and i understand such was the scramble to get this car done and just out there they
18:16didn't have time to put the finesse into the final touches on the car making sure that they had the
18:21what we call the toes right and just aligned the steering and the simple little things just the
18:25finishing touches on the job but he's doing a nice determined job out there at the moment and the fact
18:31that he's out there is something of a miracle slightly down on his teammate to the first sector
18:37but remember we saw winterbottom it was a very committed first sector from him so don't discount
18:42will davidson at this point we'll get the next one for you this is turn eight at the end of dawn
18:47fraser avenue now you'll get the next sector time
18:52he's been really effective at this place he's one of the guys that clicks with this location
18:57there it is back-to-back polls in 2011 and a win on sunday here last year
19:02so he's not overawed by the concrete barriers he's not daunted by
19:09the track surface and the bumps gentleman up in the top right-hand corner of screen is
19:14robert van gisberg and shane's dad steve webb alongside techno auto sports
19:19so jonathan webb at the moment's position two will davidson's trying to spoil the party
19:23that was a wild wild release out of turn 13 and for them eight people 29 69
19:35so again winterbottom has come forward
19:38really come forward so lounges is the one that's taken the hit in this process
19:45and will davison's on the line will matty white here fourth is a good slot to be in especially after
19:51what happened at the back end of qualifying hey guys um yeah no i'm not happy not happy but um
19:58yeah the guys did a great job fixing the car after i stuffed it in the wall so um yeah it's good to
20:04have the car out here but i must say i'm not happy with that give us a brief on the circuit how's it
20:09playing yeah there's not much grip out there at the moment we knew that watching the other guys
20:15um i stopped on the rear bar a bit to try and anticipate but uh just didn't have any grip so
20:21that's that all right mate your final weekend at fpr enjoy good luck yeah we'll have a crack in the
20:28race cheers guys shane bank is bergen the flying kiwi i reckon he's the guy to beat in this when the
20:35grip level's low he drives it pretty well we see him all the time in the wet he uses a lot of rear brake
20:41which means that you get the turning done early which means you sort of slide the car to the
20:47now slide to the fence but he is always very very committed it's a double dnf did not finish for him
20:54in 2012. whacked the medley medical car as we saw earlier in the day in v8 extra but his street circuit
21:01commitment is undoubted tips of 500 winner green box in the first sector
21:13nice job through there he actually straddled that in such a way that it didn't upset the car
21:17so he'll have made pace through there let's see what happens when he gets down to the second
21:20timing intermediate down in the bottom end of the braking area on this dawn fraser avenue
21:25down in the roller coaster will get the indication
21:30that looked pretty good it did look good
21:33lineball with mark winterbottom so it'll be the last sector of this racetrack that determines this
21:39gee it's close
21:42when it caught the fence there that was very close
21:46because you have to qualify on the front row of the grid at this circuit he's already had three poles in
21:51in 2013. his teammate john o webb is currently in second so it's a good run for techno auto sports
21:57and shane van gisbergen does a 129 one to slot in behind winterbottom
22:06and dislodge john o webb from the front row with jamie winkup the last man to come
22:14look at this this has been just seen a second ago about the sliding and a long way out of the corner it
22:18finally makes contact it actually got into the gutter it's just draws it in there it's
22:24knocked some pace out of that up the run from one to two so winterbottom again grabs one more position
22:31he come into the top 10 seventh he's going to end up on the front row here he's on frosty watch out mate
22:38well just watching him rise and rise and rise very good and when you think back to mark's lap
22:43we commented that it wasn't overly that fast but it was clean there was only one hiccup down that back
22:50chicane but he drove it like the walls weren't there i think they're all grappling with the
22:55conditions at the moment be curious to see how this guy responds the other thing to bear in mind twilight
23:00race there'll be a huge temperature drop in the surface of the racetrack when they race that'll change
23:05the conditions again so you've got to be careful you don't tune to the wrong thing and tune to this lap
23:09and not the 74. so if you ask anybody how do you win a championship they will always respond by saying
23:17you win races and jamie winkup has done that this year he's won 10 races he's had 12 pole positions
23:23but this is the one that matters
23:28he is so accurate with the car like that that breaking area there at the end of stray road is
23:33260 kilometers an hour pulls it up got it turned was absolutely millimeter perfect
23:40big slide now that will cost him a little bit of time
23:44that could let frosty off the hook very very close he not only was it sliding but the thing was actually
23:49bouncing as well wheel spinning you can see opposite lock as he was trying to catch it
23:56and you wouldn't often associate the word ugly with the red ball number one commodore but when we're
24:02riding on board there that's exactly what it sounded like and looked like and no doubt felt like for jamie
24:06winker this will be the telling marker the second timing intermediate down here
24:11it's a cigarette paper in it so it's the last third of the lap can win cup get this job done he's
24:21been the guy to chase this year for pole positions this is a mega moment for both frosty and his key
24:26rival roland dane breathe out of turn 11 around turn 12 the final turn winner bottom sweating on the
24:35monitor wind takes it wide and wide and does he get the time he does pole position for jamie winkup the
24:42championship leader brother nice job p1 but he will have mark winterbottom his key rival right next to
24:51him for the twilight race this afternoon what a job from both of them winterbottom came into this
24:58qualifying session seventh he pops out of the top 10 shootout second and that's the moment that could
25:03have spelled the end for jamie winkup but he held on to it he's on the line congratulations jamie that
25:10was a pretty wild old ride but you stuck through yeah thanks mattie uh hey i owe it to the guys uh
25:17fantastic car not my best life i've ever done but um as i say great car happy to be on pole hey jamie
25:24mark scape that was a big slide coming out of turn three mate well done very very good lap yeah yeah
25:30you got a little bit wide over the curb scape here not not my best effort but i'll take it that's
25:35for sure congratulations first pole at the circuit jamie maybe you can find your first podium here

25:47congratulations front row of the grid exactly where you want to be yeah it was uh a pretty hairy
25:52little lap there the car was moving around a lot and you know you're obviously trying to push hard
25:56but um yeah you know jamie was quick in some spots there and and just got the better of us so uh front
26:01row i went from seventh to second so we made improvements but um yeah what a good little
26:06battle this is going to be now that's the beauty can you jump him off the line uh they've actually
26:10been pretty good about six months ago i'd say absolutely but um lately they've been quite good so
26:15we'll see how we go it's a long race obviously uh i want to try and lead and put some pressure on him
26:20and uh yeah i just got to drive pretty hard here and see what happens but um if i can beat him off
26:24the line it'll help a bit although i've got triple eight cars all around me with uh the techno boys and
26:29um you know first third and fourth are all triple eight cars so um probably need to get clear of them
26:34before the the meat and the sandwich is me and i may get uh yeah you don't want to be the meat anyway
26:40so i just want to try and get in front and get away twilight race we look forward to it well done frosty

26:48four-time series champion jamie wing cup at the front row of the grid great effort from shane van
26:54gisbergen and jonathan webb from team techno to lock out the second row bright and will davidson

27:39money for claiming pole position but this one is absolutely critical puts him ahead of the field
27:46and away from all the trouble two and a half grand let's check in with mark larkin
27:53so both these guys on the second row of the grid first i want to shake your hand jonah
27:57webb mate you come to this joint and you just love it you respond we don't even know what you're doing
28:01next year but that must sort of change whatever you're thinking about doing oh that's exactly right i
28:06always love coming back to this place it always rewards me and even though it didn't feel like it
28:10in that session but no i really enjoy it here hopefully it's uh it shows what techno can do
28:14today shane van gisberg and watching that shootout i reckon that to me looked like one of the toughest
28:18we've ever had the circle looks tough your car looked very good very dynamic hard work mate yeah well
28:23i watched the first times roll in and i think reynolds was three seconds off what we did this morning and
28:28i could see obviously by the times there wasn't much grip and in doing that i braked way early for turn one and
28:33barely pulled it up and uh you know hit the wall on exeter one and the grip just wasn't there but uh
28:39to be locking out the second row techno team's pretty awesome fantastic webby let me ask you mate so
28:44what's really interesting to me and going to be spectacular in the race you guys aren't in the
28:47championship you're not in the race and you absolutely can win a race here this afternoon
28:51how does that play on you oh look i think both shane and i are going to push 110 we want to win it
28:56you know we want to come home with a couple of trophies but yeah it's always in the back of our mind that
28:59there is going to be those two or three cars are going to be racing so you know we're not going
29:02to be stupid we'll play it clean play it safe and hopefully yeah we come home at the front
