00:00:00the lead now is 0.7 of a second Richards has a look around the outside now he'll have a look at
00:00:10the inside he's right up behind the number one Holden Racing Team Commodore oh no he's gone
00:00:17into the ground Jason Richards can't salvage it from there and scape has been let off the hook
00:00:22no question about it unbelievable Mark Scape and Todd Kelly win the Sandown 500 look at this Rick is
00:00:32right up on Jason Wright now 3.1 kilometres Wright is the leader Kelly in hot pursuit he could do it
00:00:39but it's awkward through night but it'll be absolutely no detail at the control line
00:00:45Jason Wright Mark Winterbottom wins Sandown what a fantastic race
00:00:50Winkup sweating and this is the opportunity now for Winterbottom to try and pounce
00:00:55he's in the toe look at it close this is a go this is a chance they're down there they've hit
00:01:01he's pushed Winkup off I reckon that's really line ball but I think he'll get away with it
00:01:06it will be Lowndes' 100th career podium his 8.500 victory this time of the year is Lowndes' time
00:01:14yeah it's been the scene of some incredible races and it is the next stop on the V8 supercar calendar
00:01:22as we kick off the Pertec Enduro Cup the Wilson Security Sandown 500 followed of course by Bathurst
00:01:28and then Gold Coast as well all drivers stay the same across those three events v8supercars.com.au
00:01:35if you'd like more details great time of the year I'm joined at the at the desk by the boys because
00:01:40we are joined this afternoon by a very special guest a legend of our sport probably the happiest dad in
00:01:46the motorsport world right now Alan Moffat good afternoon to you mate it is great to see you
00:01:51you did everything in this sport but I'm tipping yesterday when James got his first win
00:01:56was your proudest motorsport moment correct yes it certainly was mate and I can't say that
00:02:04strongly or more with more heartfelt vigor I have to tell you I was a little worried when he went
00:02:11to the left and with six laps to go they were the hardest six laps of my life
00:02:17Alan it's Neil and look I'd like to get a bit of a data reading on just how wound up you were
00:02:23yesterday afternoon could you bear watching it well I can Neil because being away and one reason
00:02:31I am away is that I don't shake so much but when James went wide there with six laps to go I can
00:02:37assure you I was more than shaking Alan very very proud moment obviously you were in tears your wife
00:02:43told me that so I do know that for a fact you've done so much for him what sort of vigor now in terms
00:02:49of what it does for his career that momentum the rhythm that he's got going just re-signed gets
00:02:54his first win unbelievable moment in Australian sport for you well certainly and I know how
00:03:02influential this win will be to him maybe do you and you've been there we've all been there mate where
00:03:07you get your first when you say oh that's what I have to do a lot of people seem to think that we
00:03:14just cruise around and hope for the best well that's not the case we put our whole heart and
00:03:18soul into trying to get a good result a for your sponsor and be for yourself and James is there now
00:03:25and great Alan what was your advice and what were the words that you spoke to James straight after
00:03:32that victory he's a pretty cool customer but he would have been pretty wound up as well I was impressed
00:03:38how cool he was certainly more cool than his father ever was when something that important
00:03:43ever happened yes and you guys are good at laughing but when we get out of the car we weren't always
00:03:48laughing even when we won but I always took great prey uh pride in everybody that made the the car safe
00:03:54made the car fast and got me to the finish line in the first place and I'm glad to see that James has
00:04:00picked up on those points because it's not the driver alone the energy that goes into getting these
00:04:05cars just to the start line let alone the finish line is absolutely horrific this is no golf game
00:04:11this is no tennis game this is real stuff and it takes real energy from the guys behind the wheel
00:04:16Alan you won at the highest level in the Australian Touring Car Championship 36 times you know how hard
00:04:22this whole process is and I know you've got a lot of skin in the game with how much time effort and
00:04:26money you put into James through the years I mean it goes through Formula Ford through the Utes
00:04:30through Carrera Cup and a whole lot of other things but did you always believe that he could also win at
00:04:34the highest level because you know how tough it is I knew he was on the right tram and in the early
00:04:41years where I hardly had anything to do with with the teams he was working for I knew that if he could
00:04:48fight through that that agony that being mr. nobody all the time that guy that was expected to clean up
00:04:54the floors clean the toilets for God's sake and then maybe if you're a good boy we'll let you drive our car
00:05:00he had five years five seasons of that and that's when I knew he was going to get there
00:05:05Alan we've got James wired up through the wonders of technology here at Winton so he can hear you and
00:05:11we can hear him James come on in and have a chat to your dad for us and your dad's getting quite
00:05:16emotional here is that what you expected mate? I think he needs to toughen up a bit actually
00:05:21remember one thing James you're coming to our place for dinner next week and I might be cutting
00:05:32the roast well that'll be that'll be a first maybe dad but no it'll be a good dinner won't it
00:05:41that's excellent hey James obviously you know how much dad's advised you over the years
00:05:46in all areas of this game you know how complex it is you know how tough it is your dad's reaction
00:05:52yesterday what did you expect I mean I know that little mistake near the end I reckon the only guy
00:05:56in Australia had the same heart rate was your dad what did you think? Yeah it was I thought I'd
00:06:01thrown it away there so yeah the heart rate went up a few beats that's for sure but I didn't get a
00:06:08chance to call dad until about nine o'clock by the time everything had settled down but luckily I got
00:06:13a chance to speak to him and it was it was great to have a chat and yeah the emotion of it all I
00:06:19guess sort of sunk in then really. I can't believe you didn't just jump up the Hume Highway today Alan
00:06:23and come and join and stand next to James and get stuck into it where are you? After yesterday's act
00:06:30I'm still shaking from that you don't think I was going to give myself another jab in the side
00:06:35let's get serious you can only take so many jabs in the arm you know Neil. James would you prefer your
00:06:42old man here or back at home? Oh look I think uh I think it's good for him to be back home it's a
00:06:49bit cold for him up here at uh at Wynton so we don't want him catching a chill but uh yes we got
00:06:54the next one next one at Sandown so I'm sure he'll be out there for that one. Yes that will be me for
00:07:01sure. Well guys it's been fantastic to catch up with you both congratulations to you both
00:07:06not only James yesterday doing it on the track but Alan for what you've done for Australian
00:07:10Motorsport what you have done for your son and the support that you've given him and it's coming
00:07:15through in that emotion today enjoy the rest of your day both of you and let's hope for continued
00:07:19success. Thank you. Thanks for being part of it today. Cheers thanks. See you dad. Good luck fellas.
00:07:25Bye bye fella. Do it again. There you go simple advice just do it again. That's all it is. It's easy. One of the absolutely true
00:07:32gentlemen of our sport it's great to see him um so caught up in that moment as well because it's a
00:07:37terrific moment Alan Moffat joining us there we're going to take a break here at Wynton more on the
00:07:40other side. Stay with us.
00:07:41I need to know.
00:07:46I need to know now.
00:07:48Can you love me again?
00:07:50I need to know now.
00:07:54Can you know now?
00:07:56Can you love me again?
00:07:58I need to know now.
00:08:01Welcome back as we get ready to go racing here at the Wynton 360. The first of two races this
00:08:20afternoon coming our way so it's races 26 and 27 of the championship. It'll be 34 laps 100 kilometers
00:08:27and Jason Bright will start on pole with a landmark day for the man next to him which will be Tony
00:08:33Dalberto team high flex starting on the front row of the grid for the first time. Mark Larkham.
00:08:39Matthew if you look at that vision right behind me that would look like a typical front row of the
00:08:42grid except I'm standing on the ninth row of the grid. This is position 17. Position 18 two Red Bull
00:08:48cars. Craig Lowndes Jamie Winkup. Neither of them have had happy days. We might have a quick chat to
00:08:53both of them if we can. Craig very unusual that I talk to you back here pal and not a lot of laps to
00:08:58get it right. Watch the strategy. Stay out of each other's way to begin with but yeah we'll see what
00:09:04we can do. We saw yesterday that this is quite hard to pass so we'll see what happens because
00:09:09obviously yesterday 20 lap today obviously a bit over 30 so whether the tyre's got to last the
00:09:13distance that's that's the unknown quantity at the moment so whether we do a pit stop whether we
00:09:18don't we don't don't know. Good luck mate because you know I love watching you come from back
00:09:22here so watch with lots of interest. So Craig hasn't really been able to get his car right.
00:09:26Jamie on the other hand has had these tail shaft dramas that have dogged him and whilst the tail
00:09:31shaft itself playing up and vibrating doesn't make the car go slow what it has done has meant you've
00:09:35haven't had a lot of track time mate so you haven't got your car as sorted as you perhaps would like
00:09:39and she's a tough gig from back here. Yeah I won't bore you with all the excuses Larko we're back in
00:09:45the pack not where we want to be. Pretty disappointing but put our head down and it's not all over
00:09:50we'll try to make up as many spots we can. Well as Dado would say mate eyes forward. Good luck.
00:09:55From the second rail of the grid here with Mark Winterbottom dead ahead is Jason Bright,
00:09:58Tony Delberto diagonally across and James Courtney beside him. Frosty how do you manage this incredible
00:10:03turn one and try and thread the needle amongst all these guys? Yeah I've got to do that exactly.
00:10:09It looks reasonably wide when you look from here but I can tell you as soon as the lights go out
00:10:13it becomes the smallest gap you've ever seen so my start was a ripper yesterday so if I can replicate
00:10:20that hopefully the two in front don't get as good a start and I don't know it's all a split second
00:10:25decision you pick your way and sometimes it's right sometimes it's wrong so fingers crossed.
00:10:30It sounds like a good plan anyway. Let's get off the line first and then worry about what happens
00:10:34up there but plans are good they don't always work though so we'll see how we go. Good luck Frosty.
00:10:39So Mark Winterbottom starting this one from third he'll want to make as much ground as he can in
00:10:44this race because the final race of the afternoon he will start from position 19. So we've crisscrossed
00:10:50Australia we've been overseas a couple of times and now we're back at Winton Motor Raceway the
00:10:55nation's action track northeast of Melbourne and country Victorian it's a ripper of a circuit
00:11:01crompo. Only a little over a third of the lap do you actually get to full throttle around this
00:11:05three kilometre 12 turn circuit with an average speed of just on 130 odd kilometres an hour what
00:11:12is interesting I just stepped outside a moment ago the wind's gone a little more to the south
00:11:16there is a chill in the air it's not impossible that we won't see a shower in this one and as the
00:11:22boys pointed out on the grid there a moment ago the big question mark is can they make their
00:11:26tyres last for 100 kilometres around here. Jamie Winkup championship leader now by 101 points
00:11:34yesterday had a DNF a broken tail shaft it was in car number one on lap nine of the 6060
00:11:42super sprint so that's the first time in 2013 that he's had a DNF and therefore had no points
00:11:49in the bag on a race day and it was a bit of a missed opportunity for his teammate to take
00:11:54advantage of that Craig Lowndes finishing further down the pack as well. Lowndes would end up in 21st
00:12:01so the points are waiting to be taken when those further up the list so look at the Fuso starting
00:12:15grid for race number 26 of the championship season it'll be Jason Bright who's effectively a local in
00:12:20terms of the team starting from the pole Tony Delverto awesome job in qualifying to be on the
00:12:24front row then it's Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney positions three and four David Reynolds
00:12:29alongside the fast Kiwi Shane Van Gisburgh in five and six Will Davison for Pepsi Max and Fabian
00:12:36Coulthard position eight will be on the fourth row of the grid and then we've got Chas Mostert and
00:12:40Scott McLaughlin they seem to be tied together at the hip so much of the time. As we run through midfield
00:12:45just a few facts and figures about two of the guys that you spoke about inside the top ten Mark
00:12:50Winterbottom starting his 300th career race here and Will Davison his 250th. We find Todd Kelly in 15th
00:12:58with Alex Davison the gelled wind forward next to him look at that one and two in the championship
00:13:03are positions 18 and 17 for this race. Scotty Pye the Ecole Racing Commodore with Russell Ingle
00:13:09alongside him the enforcers had four race wins at this circuit he's been coming here for 17 years this is
00:13:16his last stand in Kelly country and Rick Kelly in 23rd with Jonathan Webb he's had a really poor run of
00:13:22qualifying of late. James Moffat our winner yesterday qualifies on the second last row of the grid
00:13:29what a turnaround and Tim Slade and Lee Holdsworth to the Erebus Motorsport Mercedes-Benz on the rear.
00:13:37Hey one of the greatest full forwards in AFL history Brendan Favola here enjoying the V8s and supporting a
00:13:41mate of yours Dean Fiore which is great Fav. Yeah he's uh driving for Dodo so uh you know the the little
00:13:47guys uh don't get much money put in so uh you know I think they're about a million dollar car where the
00:13:52Red Bulls I think about two and a half mil so hopefully we can uh drum up a bit of publicity for
00:13:56him and I think Yarrawonga Moala Tourism's going to sponsor the car so I'll play footy up in Yarrawonga
00:14:01and uh it's only about 35 minutes from here so great place. Good to see the local district getting on
00:14:05board and supporting a car too uh for you we should mention the Yarrawonga Pigeons as well into the finals
00:14:10kicking off next week. Yeah we didn't have a real good day yesterday though mate we got beat by eight
00:14:13goals so it gets our arch rivals Aubrey but uh final start next week mate that's when this real
00:14:17season starts so I'll enjoy the races today and then get back to playing footy on the weekend.
00:14:22And just quickly Fav how good is this? I know it's pretty loud. It's pretty good mate I uh I've never
00:14:27really been down to the pitch before so I think I'm getting the bug mate. I think you are too.
00:14:31You'll have a helmet on in no time. Thanks mate. Cheers. Cheers buddy.
00:14:34Go the pigeons. Well done Barretts. We're on board there with Mark Winterbottom still searching for his
00:14:40first race win at this circuit. We've been speaking across the weekend about the anomalies that
00:14:47Winton Motor Raceway throws up. It's never a kind one overall to those who spend countless hours
00:14:54and literally thousands of laps testing around here.
00:15:02Tim Slade Lee Holtzworth at the back of the grid at the front. Jason Bright at the back green flag at
00:15:07the back. And a huge moment in the career of Tony Dalberto and team Hyflex. Let's see if they can
00:15:14make this count while Bright stalled off the grid. Winterbottom's going to have to go around him. It
00:15:19means it will be three wide into turn one. James Courtney's ready to pounce as well. And they
00:15:24make a little bit of contact. But the Pepsi Max board of Mark Winterbottom goes through and straight
00:15:30off a Fujitsu GRM car of Alex Primer. A big crash involving Russell Ingle and Alex Davison and Winkup.
00:15:40Damage all round. Jamie Winkup. Smoke pouring out the side of car number one the Red Bull Commodore.
00:15:46Right bench. The front there on the right is broken Mark Dutton. Copy that mate. Copy that.
00:15:54Any steering? Is it steering guard before we post?
00:16:01There's the enforcer. Car 2's got a lot of damage also. Guard Tander is involved in that. Look at this.
00:16:11The right front wheel is spinning.
00:16:12So yesterday the tail shaft went on car number one. It plagued him throughout qualifying today
00:16:22with a massive vibration. It was the first time he had a DNF yesterday as Russell Ingle
00:16:28exits the super cheap Commodore. There's more damage to come for other drivers and other cars.
00:16:32Obviously we'll see it at some point. But clearly it looked to me as though Primer coming back on on the
00:16:38inside of turn two. Shuffled the pack over. It was a weird start. There was a bit of flinching going on.
00:16:45And they've had some problems at Brad Jones Racing getting their cars away from the line.
00:16:49Remember Mark and I talked about it yesterday at halftime. Winterbottom led them. Now you'll see back in the pack.
00:16:54Alex Primer spits out of the pack. But when he comes back onto the racetrack he shuffles everybody
00:17:00over to the left and there's no room. Because they all start to take avoiding action. Alex Davison had to move.
00:17:06Russell Ingle was reacting to Jamie Winkup. And then it just turns into traffic chaos.
00:17:11Well funnily enough when Alex Primer came back on that didn't have any impact on
00:17:16on the Jamie Winkup. Alex Davison thing. There was already contact in there. He was a little
00:17:21bit further up the track. Yeah the reason for that though is that Alex Davison flinches because
00:17:28you can see a car coming out of his right hand side of his windscreen. So he's moved and that's
00:17:32what's triggered it. Look at that. Big damage.
00:17:38Thank you. Let us know how you going mate. Looking great. Looking good. Someone's guiding you at the
00:17:43front there. Good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Okay. No blocks. Cancel the blocks.
00:17:48Straight up please. Straight up please. On the tender. There's a lot of damage on Garth's car also.
00:17:53How's the weekend Jamie Winkup's had? I have not seen a more disastrous weekend.
00:18:00Mechanical failure yesterday. Qualified badly with a bad vibration in qualifying and
00:18:06had limited running. Way back in the field and have a look at this.
00:18:14Chaos in the middle of the paddock. See one of the Nissans was off the road as well which also
00:18:19squeezed Lowndes out wide. But see how Alex, Alex has had to lift off. Alex has lifted off and that's
00:18:26had Jamie into the back of him because he can see the GRM car coming out of the paddock. But there
00:18:30was a bit of nonsense even prior to that at turn two where they were three wide because Lowndes was
00:18:35getting carted into the weeds too. Frantic scenes in the garages at Wynton will come back with more of race 26.
00:18:45What a dramatic start. Jason Bright couldn't get it away cleanly. Tony Dalberto likewise. Winterbottom pounces.
00:18:54The door just opens up wide for him. A little bit of contact there. But then watch this. Now keep your
00:18:59eyes on the Geldwen Ford as it comes around turn two and he flinches. Jamie Winkup goes into the back of
00:19:08him then gets squashed into Alex Premer and ends up in the air and Russell Engel ends up in the fence.
00:19:15Matty they've been flat out here in the Fujitsu garage just getting Alex Premer's car ready to go
00:19:18again. A lot of work on the front end and and on the rear end as well just getting it sorted out.
00:19:22It looks like they will get it back out there. Alex just talk us through what you saw from where
00:19:26you were sitting. What happened out there? Yeah well I had a pretty bad start and after that
00:19:30yeah it's been quizzed by Thunder on the left. So yeah I just touched my front left wheel to
00:19:35to his to his rear right and after that yeah I just went straight. And yeah I was trying to be
00:19:41careful to rejoin the track but unfortunately the grass yeah was very moved that and I went straight
00:19:47and I tried to get on the right but I couldn't yeah. Thanks Alex all the best.
00:19:51So they're underway again Mark Winterbottom. The cards are falling his way this afternoon
00:19:56and this weekend in terms of the championship this will be dangerous. Oil down there there'll
00:20:03be all sorts of fluid on the track proper but they've cleaned it up well everybody gets through.
00:20:12And Jason Bright now has Tony D'Alberto on his hammer. What about Mark Winterbottom though?
00:20:16I mean the world's just opened up for him. He's been the most consistent performer
00:20:20in the last two and three rounds pocketing the most points. Started the year after Adelaide he
00:20:26was 21st in the championship now he's up to fourth there's a chance he could be a lot higher by the
00:20:30end of this weekend. Well right now he is moved up one spot he's only 62 points behind now so
00:20:38Lowndes has gone up to 59 points behind Winkup. Winterbottom 62 points. Will Davison 79 points. How's the
00:20:46championship looking? As we head into the Pertec Enduro Cup so still a long way to go in the first of
00:20:52two races here and Winterbottom has got the early pace. He's skipped away one and a half seconds further
00:20:58up the road from our pole sitter. And Tony D'Alberto. What about his start? That was one of the best
00:21:03starts of the year. When you can round the two guys up on the front row of the grid we saw some
00:21:08of the difficulties for Jason Bright. They've had some dramas with their starts this year but
00:21:12Winterbottom's start was absolutely superb. Well you've already picked up on the Lowndes points
00:21:18of course with an FPR car out in front there it's quite obvious you can see the urgency around
00:21:22Jamie Winkup's car. Jamie's still in the car there. Looks to me like these boys are going to put a top
00:21:26suspension arm on the car. There's airbox damage but they want to get this thing out they know they've
00:21:30got to complete 75 percent of the race to get those points. And they're worth grabbing Larko as you know
00:21:37because points are paid all the way back for those that are classified and those little points can make a
00:21:42big difference at the back end of the championship season. Fastest lap of the race. Spark Winnebottom
00:21:46one minute 24.1. Hit it on the last lap. He's got a 1.4 second margin over Jason Bright. Bikes come
00:21:53out to a bit of pressure at the moment from D'Alberto. And we're looking from the front bumper of David
00:21:58Reynolds, Botolo Ford. And that was the rear bumper of the VIP pet foods car of Shane Van Gisburgh.
00:22:05And they're up at turn nine.
00:22:06And you're right about the three behind Mark Winterbottom. Bright's getting pressure from
00:22:14Dalberto and Dalberto's getting constant pressure from James Courtney. And that's allowed Van Gisburgh
00:22:20and Reynolds and Will Davison to be in striking distance. There's a lot of push and shove into
00:22:26that first corner with these three guys. There was a lot of panel exchanging going on down there.
00:22:31So this is allowing Winterbottom to skip further away. 1.6 seconds.
00:22:45It's Russell whose day only lasted about 20 seconds in race 26.
00:22:52It was actually quite hurt in the back of that car so
00:22:55it's going to be a big job. Don't know whether they can resurrect it in time for this afternoon's race.
00:23:02So Lowndes flying the solo Red Bull flag. He's having a look around.
00:23:08The back of Scott Pye's car. Behind him is Dean Fiore.
00:23:14Behind them is Mauro Engel as Michael Caruso comes back into the lane.
00:23:20And parks it. So whatever the issue is there it's big enough to put it into the garage.
00:23:24So his team mate yesterday's race winner James Moffat is in 17th at the moment as now Winkup comes
00:23:33out of the garage. Bit of race tape on the front right corner and as Mark Larkin detailed some
00:23:38front suspension repairs to send him to try and at least get something in the way of points.
00:23:43D'Alberto has really got the pressure on right now. He's going to try to set him up so the only way to do this.
00:23:50Oh and Courtney a very late dive. I thought he was going to get bright as he arrowed down the inside.
00:23:57D'Alberto does the crisscross. Now Van Giesbergen buys in. This will be interesting down at turn one.
00:24:03So James will cover here but it puts him on the dirty side of the road by running tighter down there.
00:24:11It makes you slower through turn one. So far he's got away with it. That was an intense moment for him
00:24:17on the run down pit straight. And Van Giesbergen covering as well because Reynolds wants to get through.
00:24:25How's this pack of cars from second
00:24:27through to basically Todd Kelly and Scott Pye. There's just a stream of cars so bright.
00:24:37Is the cork in the bottle.
00:24:40D'Alberto putting a lot of pressure on and look at them all.
00:24:44And for the briefest of moments that exchange between Tony D'Alberto and James Courtney. Look at this.
00:24:49Down here at turn 11. James arrives super super deep. Goes past Tony D'Alberto.
00:24:56Has two wheels on the dirty stuff. And D'Alberto does the switchback on turn 12 onto the main straight.
00:25:02It gave Jason Bright just a little bit of relief. But now it's back on again.
00:25:06It was actually a very good drive. Very good piece of driving from D'Alberto.
00:25:11Good presence of mind to turn back like that. It was a good crisscross.
00:25:14Well Scott, you would appreciate. Russell Ingle is like a caged lion sitting here just having to watch this race.
00:25:19Uh Russell, that was some miss. Uh yeah, it was. You know, like the saying I've used before, uh
00:25:25you lie with dogs, you get fleas. You know, that's the price you pay for being back there, you know.
00:25:30But uh, yeah, there's a fair bit of mayhem as usual, a bit of silliness.
00:25:35The usual contenders in there as well, no doubt. I think the Premats and the Doversons are in there somewhere.
00:25:40But you know, like uh, yeah mate, this year's getting from bad to worse.
00:25:43It's a shame because we had a really good run yesterday, you know, ninth place.
00:25:47And uh, and the car was strong, you know. But uh, what can you say? That's life.
00:25:51It looks like we've got a hell of a race on our hands just here. So uh, I'm cheering for D'Alberto.
00:25:55All right, sit back in the gym.
00:25:58Not so sure about Russell Ingle talking about uh, usual contenders. I want to just try and sneak
00:26:02in here and grab a word if I can with Roland Dane just talking with Mark Dutton. Hey Roland uh,
00:26:06uh, stating the office, we had to get uh, Jamie out there to try and get some points. The car
00:26:11doesn't look great. It's obviously just a finishing car, not a race car for the rest of the race.
00:26:15Yeah, yeah. It's just a matter of going around trying to get what points there are on the table at the end of
00:26:19this. Did you get a read on that? Seemed a little bit unfortunate with what happened
00:26:21at Premal. You think he could have ended a little more safely?
00:26:23I've absolutely no idea. I've got no view on it at all. I haven't looked at it properly.
00:26:27The first thing I saw was Jamie up in the air. Okay mate, talk to you later.
00:26:31So Roland's point there about the points getting back out now for 25th, which will be what he
00:26:36actually is because Caruso will be out. At the moment that is worth 20 points. So that gap that
00:26:42I said was 59 by getting back out there is 79. These are championship changing things. We've seen
00:26:48this championship won by a lot less than that. So lap speed check for Winterbottom is a 1 minute 24.4.
00:26:56Bright's now come up to match that speed 24.5 and Alberto's at the same speed, Courtney and so on.
00:27:02So that little gap that Winterbottom earned is a nice little cushion now, but as all the temps
00:27:07come up, all the tire pressures and the boys sort out what they want to do with the controllable front
00:27:12and rear anti-roll bars, things have settled down. But that little blockage around positions two and
00:27:19three in the field is many. There's a whole string of cars that are all basically locked at the same
00:27:24pace. Body work hanging off there from one of them earlier on that replay. This is up at turn seven.
00:27:29So Bright's just been holding them up a bit here at the moment while his tires have come up,
00:27:33I'd suggest. And that's ended up creating a traffic jam. Still hasn't skipped away.
00:27:43He's got the benefit of clean air in front. Look at this. One after another, after another.
00:27:51They'll all just be doing a little bit of waiting and watching at the moment too, because if you go
00:27:54berserk and try and string together effectively qualifying laps right at this point,
00:27:59early in the race, you'll hurt the tires to such an extent that you'll have nothing to fight with
00:28:03later on.
00:28:03Neil, directly behind us, there's a lot of work going on. Michael Caruso's Norton Hornet at the
00:28:07moment. Michael, do we know exactly what the problem is?
00:28:09Yeah, unfortunately, it's a lower control arm in the rear suspension. So
00:28:16going into turn one, not sure what happened with Alex Bremer, but he pretty much went straight ahead.
00:28:22And I'm obviously stuck around the outside and then Garth's tagged the back of me. So
00:28:28I don't know if Garth knew I was even there because Alex sort of went through between us. But
00:28:32unfortunately, yeah, I mean, way too much damage to drive around with. So a bit disappointing because
00:28:37I felt like the car had it in it, to be honest. So we sort of knew that coming out of qualifying
00:28:43that I didn't get to pull my luck together. So the car had plenty of speed, but I'm allowed to show it today.
00:28:48Thanks, mate. Thanks.
00:28:51Michael Caruso second yesterday behind James Moffat.
00:28:55So what's likely also going on here, just to add a remark to my earlier, was that they're nursing a
00:29:02little bit at the moment. And most likely what's happening is in order to manage tyre wear, probably
00:29:08driving to a number. Sat around in the pre-brief, there's Wincup just getting out of everybody's way.
00:29:15And all the teams, all the key teams and the key runners that are trying to get the biggest results
00:29:20here at the moment have sat down and thought about it. How are we going to play this game?
00:29:23Early on, they're going to be pretty conservative. They're going to push. They're certainly not
00:29:26dawdling out there at the moment, but they will be running to some extent to another.
00:29:31Yeah, Tim Edwards, team principal down here at Ford Performance Racing. Mate,
00:29:34how quickly things can turn. You really needed to capitalise on Red Bull Racing's
00:29:39dramas this weekend. Now you're in a position to do that. Question is, can your tyres last?
00:29:44Come back and ask me in about 24 laps, will you?
00:29:46Oh, look, I mean, we know what, you know, we did 20 laps on them yesterday. We know what our
00:29:51degradation was there. I suppose the unknown is what happens in the next 14 laps after that
00:29:5620 laps. And, you know, there's a, you know, it is a concern that we might get to lap 25 and all
00:30:01of a sudden they go off a cliff. But until we all get there, we won't really know.
00:30:05All right, good luck. Thanks, mate.
00:30:07So Jamie Wincup, just a handful of laps. They've got him out there for, and now he's back in pit lane for
00:30:13yet more work on the championship leading. But right now it's the Ford Performance Racing's Falcon
00:30:20out there doing it by almost two seconds over Jason Bright. Mark Winterbottom has the race lead
00:30:26here at the Winton 360. You're watching it on seven sport.
00:30:35The Winton 360 mega wall shows you Alex Prem are stuck in pit lane.
00:30:40That turn two lap one incident that triggered a disastrous day for not only Russell Ingle,
00:30:49so Mark Caruso and our championship leader, Jamie Wincup. Mark Winterbottom is all smiles.
00:30:56He's 2.3 seconds ahead as we go on board with Fabian Coulthard. Ninth position, the Lockwood
00:31:02racer after finishing yesterday's race in seventh. Terrific run of top 10 performances this year.
00:31:11He's now had 17 top 10 finishes, including three race wins and a couple of holes.
00:31:18It's been a breakthrough year for the Kiwi fad. Still a bit of a holding pattern at the front,
00:31:25although the gap for Winterbottom is exceeding two seconds. Bright is still holding off to Alberto,
00:31:31he's still holding off James Courtney, so hold your stations, folks.
00:31:37Lap 13 out of 34. It's almost like nobody's willing, further to your point, Crompo, nobody's
00:31:45willing to have a crack at the moment. Well, I just had a bit of a look at the lap by lap,
00:31:50day on day. And at the same point in yesterday's race, the top guys are averaging about 0.7,
00:31:550.8 in the lap, a second in the lap faster. That's a lot. So we're doing three quarters of a second.
00:32:01So it goes to the point that the various team principles and managers have made to us in the
00:32:05gap between qualifying in the race and to the guys standing a bit late in those interviews that
00:32:09come back and talk to me a bit later and we'll see what we can race with. Right at the moment,
00:32:12you've got a halt position, push hard, do the best you can, but if you get into that really
00:32:18aggressive mode of leaning heavily on the tyre, putting a lot of energy in it with the throttle,
00:32:23you go to pay a price late in the race. And yesterday with two lots of 20 laps,
00:32:30that was pretty much worked out from a degradation standpoint on how much the tyre deteriorated and
00:32:35the guys have used that as a base for today. But as you've heard so many of the guys,
00:32:40Tim Edwards then pointed out another 14 laps and just don't know they're all pioneers
00:32:44with this new tyre as to how that's going to survive in the latter stages of this 34 lap race.
00:32:50Fujitsu racing guys are scurrying around underneath Alex Primer's car at the moment. They won't get it
00:32:54back out in this race, but they hope to have it out for our next race, race 27 guys.
00:32:59Okay, thanks Barrettes. James Moffat's
00:33:03putting a few signals out to Mauro Engel that he's ready to try and round him up and get past
00:33:08Dicing for 16th spot. Times last time around a 124.9 for Mark Winterbottom, a 124.3 for Bright.
00:33:26So in the top 10 Bright's the quickest over the last lap.
00:33:31And I think what will have happened there, we often say it Matt, that Winterbottom got that
00:33:40break, it's roughly one and a half seconds now, but he's probably been told just to calm it a little
00:33:46bit, just bring it back and just drive it, as Neil said, to the lap time, because you only need to
00:33:51win this by the smallest margin. And with that early break that he had, he can probably forward,
00:33:56which he's done just to conserve this section of this race and understand as the race goes on.
00:34:04If the guys do come at him, he's got something to fight with.
00:34:08James Rosenberg on screen, top right-hand corner there. He was watching his man, Tim Slade,
00:34:13who's 18th at the moment. There he is in the heavy haulage Australia,
00:34:16Erebus Motorsport entry. He's got a battle on his hands.
00:34:19Morrow Engel refuses to let Moffat rattle him. David Reynolds inside the top 10. He's currently
00:34:31in sixth. Mark Winterbottom is holding steady at the moment on route to his first race win,
00:34:37possibly right here at Winton.
00:34:39Midway through race 26 of the series and Mark Winterbottom's lead is 1.2 seconds.
00:34:52He can afford to drive to a number now, but there's still 17 laps to go.
00:35:00See that loaded right rear tyre again, super slow-mo, quite revealing the amount of tyre
00:35:05distortion. See bits of rubber flicking up and that's building up on the edges and the verges
00:35:09of the racetrack. So if you step off the racing line and out of the groove at the moment, you'll
00:35:13be hurt. Super careful there. They also just intercepted a radio message from Garth Tander.
00:35:19There's Al Dalberto on the pit wall, watching his boy, who's third at the moment, on target for a podium.
00:35:24If he can keep that up, it should be an outstanding performance.
00:35:27Incidentally, they're celebrating 30 years of Dalberto Holden. It's a little sign on the
00:35:31back quarter panel of that car. Tander's using the opportunity now with his guys
00:35:37to basically test. So they've got some, in their words, rubbish tyres on the car. So they're just
00:35:43trying some changes to see what it's like. So they're preparing now for race 27.
00:35:47Even though Garth's out there in 24th, they're really thinking ahead.
00:35:50Jono Webb's in the garage with a sticking throttle. He's been out there for a few laps trying to
00:35:54rectify it, but it's not going to fix itself. And they've decided to err on the side of safety and
00:35:58bring him in and do it properly, guys. That's ugly. Jam throttle anywhere is a nightmare.
00:36:07It's a really ugly feeling in the car. He's had an interesting season, Jono Webb. It started well.
00:36:12Top 10s all the way for the first two rounds, pretty much. And then Barbagello wasn't that great,
00:36:18but then he fired back for more top 10s in Austin and Darwin. And ever since, they've really struggled
00:36:24to sit inside the top 15. Mind you, he's on target for this stage. It's very early days. We've got a lot
00:36:31of points to deal with at the back end of the year, but he's come into the weekend in the 10. And if he
00:36:36stays in that realm, it'll be the best championship season. We still, it's been around a little while,
00:36:41particularly in other categories, Matt, but he's still relatively new at the game. This is wild stuff.
00:36:46If you could see him in the commentary box here at the moment, he's just, our thoughts and faces are
00:36:53distorting much like that anti-roll bar. That's Fabian Coulthard's car. This is the left-hander at
00:36:58turn one. That's the right-hander at turn two. Look at the load on that blade. So the thing that's
00:37:03vertical pretty much is the end of the stabiliser bar, the sway bar or roll bar right there on your top
00:37:10right. Yeah, and it does look like, Neil's making the point that it does look like the drive shaft's
00:37:15bending. I'm sure it doesn't, but it looks like it. But the sway bar blade is the thing that's
00:37:24really weird because you look at the deflection and over the curves, you just see the level of force.
00:37:32So the sway bar contributes to the overall stiffness
00:37:35of the rear suspension. And I reckon when that's bent like that, I'm sure the guys in the garage just
00:37:43can't believe that it actually has those angles. I know, I know what he's saying. Neil's trying to convince
00:37:49me that the drive shaft, the
00:37:51the axle is bending. It does look like it does. It looks like it. This will be a conversation between
00:37:59races with some engineers. We'll all sit around and scratch our heads and Mew's got no idea what
00:38:03we're talking about. Meanwhile, Winterbottom has lost a huge amount of that gap. That was 1.5 seconds
00:38:10only a lap or so ago. Look at those numbers. Now, whether he's made a mistake or it's the start
00:38:16of the tire falling off the cliff. Right, he stepped it up. I can answer some of that, Mark,
00:38:20because his last lap was a 24-4, Jason Bright. His best lap has been a 24-3. So even though he's on
00:38:26lap 20, he's actually just gone only a tenth slower than his peak value. So he's held back. He was
00:38:32really capping that whole group behind him. They've all begun to drop off and now he's stepped it up a
00:38:37notch. Meantime, Frosty used a bit more, I would say, early on, and that may have hurt. So this is
00:38:43interesting. These are former teammates and it's good strategy because the BJR guys have probably
00:38:48said, now let's just conserve this early. We know this is going to be a drama being 14 laps longer
00:38:52than yesterday. Meanwhile, Winterbottom went out with a pretty early lead. He's dragged it back a
00:38:57little bit. Bright stepped it up. So the strategy of this is intriguing. Well, the one and only time
00:39:02that Ford Performance Racing has won at Winton was 2006 through Jason Bright. We've made the point
00:39:10that Mark Winterbottom has had success here in qualifying, but never in a race.
00:39:15Now they find themselves in different sides of the garage,
00:39:20different makes, and they're battling for the win today.
00:39:26Now boys, these cars are about to come along the pit straight. Here comes Winterbottom straight at me
00:39:30now. They're doing about 225 kilometers an hour. Now to show you how these cars,
00:39:34these new generation of cars have developed. You can see the brake markers for turn one.
00:39:38That's 150 meters out from the curb or the apex. 100 meters. Now back when we were doing it was 150,
00:39:45140 meters. Watch these cars now. Watch the brake lights. They are going to less than 100 meters
00:39:51because of the tire and the brake development. That is brave. That is great car development and
00:39:57brake driver stuff. Although, Crump, I remember your brake marker. I think it's over here somewhere, Mark.
00:40:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:40:03It was still later. It was later than yours.
00:40:10Well done, Lyco. Because what it also shows is in at about the 100 marker is the overrun of the old
00:40:17circuit or the old layout. So you've got to go over the bump and brake the car over that rise before
00:40:22you get to turn one. So the brake modulation and the feel there is extremely difficult to make
00:40:28nice and smooth and get the car in there without too much disruption. And look at the pressure now
00:40:33that Bryant is putting on Winterbottom. And the pressure that Courtney is putting on Dalberto.
00:40:38Remember, Tony Dalberto has never been on a V8 supercar podium. His best result has been sixth
00:40:45a few times. And here he is trying to hold off the former series champion.
00:40:49He's won at this circuit. James Courtney did a clean sweep in 2010. The year he won the championship.
00:40:57He's trying to get around Dalberto. Bright desperately trying to hook up to Winterbottom.
00:41:02And Neil Scaife, you might have been spot on about Jason Bright being conservative. I did
00:41:06mention to Brad Jones, Brad, that maybe Bright was being a little bit conservative early on in the race,
00:41:11to which you said. Maybe. So that's a yes. Well, yeah. I mean, look, it's a long race. And for us,
00:41:19we're driving to a time and we thought at the front we could dictate the pace pretty well. I think Frosty was
00:41:24looking to skip away pretty early. But they've dropped back to a similar sort of strategy to
00:41:29ours, it looks like. But I think we're at that part of the race now where we need to put a bit of heat on
00:41:33the Falcon and try and get to chew up the tyres. And then hopefully we can jump towards the end of
00:41:37the race. So you see what happens. But right now, you know, we look like we've got a reasonable turn
00:41:42of speed. And I think he's he's not at 100 percent just yet. So we'll see what happens. All right.
00:41:47This is on. Well, we'll see. Good luck. Thank you. And we're into uncharted waters now to some extent.
00:41:53It's stopped down there at the Holden Racing team for Garth Kander as they go through some
00:41:57experimentation and testing. Another set of tyres on. But we've now exceeded what was the halfway
00:42:04point in the half-half 60-60 super sprints yesterday. So the cumulative running now is going
00:42:10to be really interesting to see how the tyres behave. It's Winterbottom over Bright and this great scrap
00:42:15forming between Dalberto Courtney and Van Gisberg. We'll be back soon.
00:42:26Welcome back. This will be the run to the finish line now. 11 laps to go
00:42:30in the first of two races this afternoon. Make sure you stick around in between races as well. We're
00:42:35going to trawl through the archives and go through the top moments here at Winton. More than 25 years
00:42:41worth of V8 supercar or Australian touring car races. So Scaifey's going to give us his top list
00:42:47of memories. Here's Chas Mostert. Winner up at Ipswich. And he is in 11th spot.
00:42:54Looking back to Todd Kelly. He's getting a fair bit of pressure from Craig Lowndes.
00:42:59At the front, Mark Winterbottom and Jason Bright. Now there's nothing in them.
00:43:04It's on. So Bright's now got to within a car length. And I was going to make the point that
00:43:07one car in front of, lost it, is David Ball. That's a very good effort in Wilson Security.
00:43:11A third of the Brad Jones cars in the top 10. So let's see what Bright he's got. And let's see how
00:43:18Tony Dalberto withstands the blowtorch as well. Because he's got a big test here. He's got a couple of
00:43:24real hard heads behind him in Courtney and Van Gisbergen. And they'll absolutely be looking to step on
00:43:28him and slice him up. But so far, he's standing it. And we saw him. An amazing result yesterday
00:43:35for James Moffat. First time for the win, but first time for Dalberto to get on the podium.
00:43:39This is career changing stuff for young men. With someone like Courtney behind and the pressure
00:43:44that he will exert in the closing stages of this race will be one of the most intense
00:43:5010 laps that Tony Dalberto has ever been through.
00:43:55Well, he was sixth at Townsville this year. He's been sixth before, twice before that.
00:44:01He was top 10 sixth, in fact, at Bathurst a few years back with Steve Owen. But I reckon
00:44:06the podium here will be an absolute breakthrough for Tony Dalberto.
00:44:11So the big question is, how much has Mark Winterbottom got left to fend off Jason Bright,
00:44:17who we know was in a little bit of a conservation mode earlier in this race?
00:44:21There's never any doubting of determination in any of the 28 guys that are out there. But given the
00:44:26fact that he's qualified so well and over the years in practice sessions, we've seen some stunning
00:44:31times from Mark Winterbottom. I can guarantee you he will fight until there's absolutely nothing left
00:44:36in order to be able to generate a race win here. So we'll just stay on board here looking rearward
00:44:43from Mark Winterbottom's car. This is through turns one, two. This is where all the trouble was in the
00:44:48opening lap. Climbing up the hill 190 kilometres an hour here in the braking area to three. It's 100
00:44:54kilometres an hour at the apex. Then plunge down the hill, back up to 150 k's. This is third gear,
00:45:00there's this fourth. Then into the left-hander at turn five. It's a great bit of road here.
00:45:10140 k's the slower speed in the mid-corner and you can see a little bit of oversteer from Jason
00:45:15Bright's car. Then you've got to stop the car while it's turning and not lock a brake in the process at
00:45:20seven. Back to 125 k's on the run into eight. This is eight. Second gear. Squeeze the throttle down
00:45:27gently back to 120 k's. Out of it again. Back down to the mid-sixties in the middle of the corner and
00:45:33Scafie described yesterday turn nine as the most frustrating in the country. And for a moment you
00:45:39get back up to 190 kilometres an hour and a breather before you get to turn 10. There was action there
00:45:43yesterday. Oh and there's action there again now as Courtney moves up a spot to third. And they're on
00:45:50that run now down to turn 11. That's where Courtney got past him a few laps later and a few laps earlier
00:45:57sorry and Tony Dalberto just gives him a little nudge along. Remember he did the crossover Tony
00:46:05Dalberto last time around but now James Courtney keeps that position. He's in third.
00:46:11See all those marks on the front of Dalberto's car. That all happened in the run to turn one.
00:46:20The first lap of the race. I also just heard Will Davison talking about massive build up on the tyres.
00:46:25This is what Jason Bright complained about yesterday. So here's a replay of the battle
00:46:30between Dalberto and Courtney and James has given him a little bit of hurry up. That's why that's why the
00:46:35Dalberto return of serve. That was just a wake-up call. A little of the rear bumper. Here it is from
00:46:43on board. Push. Push. The reason you do that folks is just to upset the car in front. This is the spot to
00:46:52have a dive. He's done that good dive. This was Ingalls move yesterday but he got it slowed up. He got it
00:46:58turned and now this is looking back. We'll watch Dalberto do the same thing. We get down to turn 11.
00:47:05Turns it in and bang. Just a little tap again. This is the gamesmanship that gets played and that was
00:47:16a little lesson for yeah a little lesson for Tony Dalberto playing with Courtney there that
00:47:21even they're out of the same stable still pretty lively. Guys down at Pepsi Max Racing. Tim Edwards
00:47:30and the team just watching on very closely at the moment. Might try and grab a quick word Tim. You
00:47:34did say to Larko come back in 20 laps and we'd see how those tyres were going. Do you think they'll hold
00:47:38out? Well Will's certainly struggling at the moment. He's not sure whether he's got a messy bit of build
00:47:43up on him but he's certainly struggling. Frosty seems to be maintaining good pace at the moment so yeah.
00:47:49Can Frosty hold out Jason Bright do you think? Oh look at the moment I'd say they're both
00:47:53starting to struggle a little bit. You're watching everybody. Everybody's sort of coming to that cliff
00:47:57so you know we've got seven to go. It's going to be a touch and go. Love a big finish. Thanks Tim. Thanks mate.
00:48:031.24.92 was Mark Winterbottom's last lap. 1.24.97 was Jason Bright's back on board with Fabian Coulthard.
00:48:12As you mentioned with David Wall and Bright inside the top ten it makes it three out of three for
00:48:18Bradley Jones Racing in the top ten at this stage. Good shot at the back of Will's car there. You can
00:48:23see how much brake he carries into the corner. He had the brake lights on all the way pretty much to
00:48:28the apex of turn seven. Those brake lights on again pretty much all the way to the apex of turn nine
00:48:33just to keep the car steady. Keep some load on the nose and uh speaking of nose it looks secondhand
00:48:40and ordinary in the case of Jamie Wincup. Nice steady improvement we're just doing this one on there and
00:48:46that's not going anywhere so a lot of damage on the top a arm that's broken that arm
00:49:06that will be a struggle now because haven't got enough time there well it's certainly going to be
00:49:11tight he's showing uh 25th on the computer at the moment they've got to get him out and try and make
00:49:17sure that he stays classified he can't lose 26 laps exactly to be classified yeah yeah and i think
00:49:21they're in trouble now looking at that top arm i just got a quick look at it it's broken right in
00:49:25the middle so it was obviously bent before in the middle of the arm they didn't get to replace it by
00:49:29the look of that that's ultimately uh it's broken so there's no chance they're going to get that
00:49:33back out and underway in time and frank adamson standing right here the official i don't know if you can
00:49:37see there he is and there's no way that bloke is going to let that car go out with that a-arm
00:49:42that bloke that bloke there that car there that that wheel there that i-arm there
00:49:46poor old frank he's been painted as a black hat he's actually a nice bloke he's not that bad folks
00:49:50he's just making sure that things are safe the bottom line is jamie wing cup's not going anywhere
00:49:54it doesn't make any difference anyway because there's not enough laps for him left to be qualified
00:50:00he's going to go back to back races dns back to back no points
00:50:05we've got aaron noonan going through the computer system to find out the last time that happened to
00:50:10jamie wing cup that's cost him 22 points wing cup now this is an interesting battle between uh well
00:50:18there's most it and moffat and lounge all together here all having an arm wrestle car 17 tim blanchard's
00:50:24also been notified bad sportsmanship flag for blocking let's remember that james moffat started this race
00:50:30after a bad qualifier in 25th so he has moved up the field 13 spots to 12. looking back from chas
00:50:38most it's wilson security for some walking wounded out there at the moment some of them are now starting
00:50:50to really struggle for lap speed too they have approached that clip that tim spoke of so now
00:50:55james moffat down the inside of chas most that this is a great recovery by young james so he's up to
00:51:0011th now from that grim position that maddie just spoke about nice job 25th
00:51:08it's a great little corner this turn five in the middle of the complex a lot of very delicate wheel
00:51:14and footwork required to get the car through there smoothly
00:51:17and then that big gap that you saw from the lounge room always looks inviting huge hole up the inside
00:51:24there and the temptation is to try and sneak up the inside very often the gap completely disappears
00:51:30and this is the reason why tim blanchard's been given that flag so alex davidson trying to get
00:51:35underneath him and race control dissatisfied with tim's performance they feel he's blocking
00:51:40so they've notified him via the flag system shout out to the flag he's here again this weekend to
00:51:47a monumental job for us volunteers that helped put the show together well done
00:51:53nudes has gone back to me on the kind of weekend that jamie winkup's having you have to go back to
00:51:58hamilton 2008 remember in new zealand when he crashed in qualifying and he didn't get to the start line
00:52:04all weekend but realistically he has never had a double dnf weekend what a time to do it
00:52:10one event out from the per tech enduro cup yeah matthew reflecting on the boys i just want to say
00:52:15i think it's actually a very strong effort moth running around there in uh what about 11th spot
00:52:19at the moment because one thing happens when you win like they did yesterday the whole dynamic
00:52:24changes and i just don't think it's as easy as that when you get your first win to rock up the next
00:52:28day and just repeat it or expect to repeat it i mean you imagine his night last night his morning
00:52:33this morning his whole world would be different so i think it's quite a solid effort to come out and back
00:52:37it's a really good point i mean to come from 25th and be 11th with really good car speed at the
00:52:44moment their cars are looking after the tires very well and as you said after such a monumental day
00:52:50yesterday and he said earlier in the telecast didn't sleep very well he would have woken up this
00:52:55morning and pinched himself to say is this this reality to win your first v8 supercar race and to come
00:53:03out didn't qualify anywhere near as well as he wanted because he had the wrong setup for the first
00:53:08part of this he qualified better for the next race but he didn't qualify well and to forge through the
00:53:12field is a credible effort lance's done a pretty good job of mitigating the risk here with the points
00:53:19battle as well because qualified 17th he's currently racing in 12th position so he's made some ground that's
00:53:25points remember he's got his own championship battle going on with his teammate jamie wincup and
00:53:30it's all about the zig and zag of all of that you know putting a whole season together and when when
00:53:37your teammate's having a bad run and if you happen to be battling in the championship you've got to
00:53:41try and make it stick so as tough as the weekend's been he is accumulating points out there at the moment
00:53:45he clearly doesn't have a quick car but it's not a bad recovery so there's a couple of guys out there
00:53:52that have been marching through the field so dalberto now is slightly vulnerable to van gisbergen and
00:53:56david reynolds david's done a really good solid job out there stalking these guys waiting to pounce if
00:54:03there's a mistake his stable mate mark winterbottom is the leader of the race he's got a 0.6 of a second
00:54:10margin and will davidson's next in the queue after david here
00:54:14down at turn 10 another of the second gear corners
00:54:24so the championship chase lads is on 55 points at the moment
00:54:30back to craig lounge so wincup in the spot that he's at that little pass that lounge has made so
00:54:35he stays in this position 55 points only back to lounge and 62 points if winterbottom hangs on so
00:54:42wow what a weekend
00:54:48brendan favola watching on he was in deep fiore's corner earlier in the day now he's gone down to
00:54:56what it looks like to be the winner's corner that's what politicians do well done fev
00:55:00they jump into the winning garage at just the right time are they certainly
00:55:04look at all the build up the rubber on the side of the track which is what will davidson's been
00:55:11complaining about pickup at the back end of this race so at this stage mark winterbottom continues
00:55:19to hold off jason bright it's level pegging in terms of lap times almost to the 100th in terms of sector
00:55:28time that's the stuff that will davidson was complaining about before and he's getting some
00:55:32of that on his tires jason bright had it on his tires yesterday you've only got to go offline
00:55:36a fraction and you'll get a heap of that stuff remember the tires are running somewhere in the
00:55:4080 to 90 degrees celsius range or more and so they're very very hot and they grab that stuff and it
00:55:46sticks to the tire it feels for all money like you've got a puncture or some sort of an instability in
00:55:51the suspension in the car now bright's having one more crack at this whatever he's got left
00:55:56he's trying really hard not to slide the car but he's stalking his old mate mark winterbottom on the
00:56:03run to turn one and james small telling mark winterbottom to hold his ground he got wide between one and
00:56:11two then winterbottom he couldn't hold it back on the left hand side of the road before you make the
00:56:16approach to turn two look at that championship battle 55 points back to lounge 62 winterbottom 79
00:56:24will davidson this championship chase has tightened up significantly over this weekend with a horror
00:56:31weekend for jamie winkup with all the experience that mark winterbottom has especially around this
00:56:38circuit he knows that he is under pressure there's only half a lap left to go and one slight error here
00:56:44will open a huge gap for jason bright who won't mess around to go through he looks on that side he's
00:56:51had a look on the outside previously winterbottom has had 20 races now at this circuit he's done
00:56:58countless laps here testing he's never won a race at winter and now he's holding off jason bright a
00:57:05four-time race winner at this track and mark winterbottom
00:57:10with no mistakes will wrap up a victory
00:57:17it'll be his second for the season and what a day to do it as well this is his 300th career race
00:57:25winnerbottom finally on the winners list at winton
00:57:29bright second that's his seventh podium of the year james courtney
00:57:33in third and tony d'alberto a career best finish of fourth
00:57:39and bright threw everything at it and the breaking approach
00:57:45when he was uh pushing pretty hard early there so
00:57:48you know i'm pretty happy to be able to make up that ground again and put as much pressure as we did
00:57:53it's the voice of jason bright just debriefing with his engineering group
00:58:01so that's a good result though for jason bright it wasn't quite the win in the end it was only
00:58:04point four in the final analysis but well done to pepsi for performance racing nice job and finally
00:58:11the breakthrough win that mark winterbottom's been seeking for a long long time in the main game here
00:58:15i was impressed with his drive yesterday because he held courtney off really well yesterday it
00:58:20was a really good mature drive very tough racing drive when you've got that level of pressure
00:58:26and that was even better because when you're battling for the top step of the podium and
00:58:30someone like jason bright very experienced coming at you like that that was a superb
00:58:36performance from mark winterbottom and only the second time that ford performance racing has
00:58:40won a race at winton so one two three goes to winterbottom bright and courtney shane van gisberg
00:58:46and top five james moffat the winner from yesterday started 25th up to 11th and craig lounge second in
00:58:53the championship finishes in 12th spot but the story again of this one our championship leader jamie
00:58:59wincup a dnf no points next to his name for the second race in a row his championship lead has been
00:59:06whittled away since the start of this weekend celebration time for the pepsi max fpr forward
00:59:14of mark winterbottom second win of 2013. this run that he's put together over the last few events
00:59:24where he scored the most points or more points than anybody else townsville he was on the podium
00:59:31queensland raceway he was on the podium twice and he comes here with a fourth placing yesterday
00:59:36and starts the sunday race day with a victory over jason bryde's former teammate and james courtney
00:59:47a couple of guys just had very difficult afternoons rick kelly was down in 22nd then
00:59:52and also the erebus motorsport entries were buried back in the pack as well
01:00:00so david wall did hang on for that 10 spot so that's definitely dip your hat there that's a
01:00:04that's a good performance for bjr with three cars in the top 10 absolutely very very good hard thing to do
01:00:12so well done to this guy and i was enjoying the exchange between these two they've been teammates
01:00:17in the past jason bright and mark winterbottom a lot of respect between both of them
01:00:22and despite all the promise over a long period of time for fourth performance racing they have actually
01:00:26been able to convert a good qualifying performance into a great result
01:00:30it was a very good start yeah if you think about what happened he got by the two guys on the front
01:00:36row of the grid with a ripping start and he was able to hang on so that performance from not just a
01:00:43good qualifying but getting the whole act together was exactly what he demonstrated and he'll be wrapped
01:00:50with this result this is a championship changer for him up until today he'd finished second three times
01:01:05at this circuit and now the breakthrough today his wife renee there to celebrate
01:01:13go daddy oliver and austin never too far away
01:01:24so winner in the heat in darwin and comes back to their test track and does it in the cool
01:01:32good effort from james courtney and a good battle between him and tony d'alberto
01:01:36and as you mentioned crompa a lot of respect between these two guys
01:01:43yeah they're just having their own little personal debrief there mine did this yours did that
01:01:47observations often really interesting chat the back end of these races
01:01:53well mark winterbottom what a tremendous day a win just when the team needed it and congratulations
01:01:58on your first win at winton yeah i've been coming here for quite a while and uh that's awesome that
01:02:04was a tough race um bridey pushed me all the way and it's great to have those good battles with clean
01:02:08guys so uh that was a great race but um next one i'm off 19 so we've got a short time to celebrate
01:02:14and then we have to go again so um but that was that was awesome this championship this year is like
01:02:18a game of snakes and ladders what's happened at the moment is you've come up to third in the
01:02:21championship you are 62 points off the lead that's how important this win was today yeah well um
01:02:26unfortunately again i'm on 19th in the next one i wish i was up the front but um yeah it's such a
01:02:32changing uh championship boss you know 450 points down uh about three three or four rounds ago so um
01:02:38it's always changing but that little chat we had about needling the way at the start thank you that
01:02:42uh that probably got me that win then glad i could help frosty well done congratulations give me some
01:02:46info for 19th next one please all the best hey jason bright congratulations another day another podium
01:02:52here at winton's fantastic and you hear that roar from the crowd you've got great support here yeah
01:02:56mate we were uh we're the only local team obviously with it with the team based in albury but um
01:03:00you know the car's working great i fluffed the start completely and you know that's probably
01:03:04what lost it for us but you know frosty had some good pace he was driving away early on there i
01:03:08thought he must have been going to do a pit stop but uh after a while i realized he wasn't going to
01:03:11stop so i had to catch him again and by the time i caught him i really didn't have a lot left to pass
01:03:15him brody did you think we brad explained to us earlier on that you'd had a fairly conservative
01:03:19approach did you think you'd have enough there towards the end to maybe get past him well catching
01:03:23him at a reasonable rate but you know this is probably one of the hardest tracks to pass on particularly
01:03:27when you know the track's so dirty at the moment you know the racing line's really grippy and to go
01:03:31to try and pass someone you've got to go onto the dirty stuff so you know and he's got some good
01:03:35pace off the corners so i mean our strength was into the corners his strength was off the corners so
01:03:39we're never really close to have a lunch jason well done congratulations can you do us a favor and
01:03:43just show frosty the way to the podium here too thanks man cheers and james courtney well done
01:03:48congratulations and we talked yesterday about this mid-season resurgence of the holden
01:03:52racing team this just continues it's great for you guys yeah it's fantastic uh would have liked
01:03:56first but uh first of all thanks for everyone coming out i know how cold it is down here so uh
01:04:00cheers to everyone for coming out but it's uh no it's a great result for us at the team we've got
01:04:04pole for the next one uh podium for this one so uh no it's looking pretty good for uh car 22 at the
01:04:09moment all right we'll keep it rolling jc enjoy the podium well done cheers buddy see you nice ryan
01:04:14tony dalberto great effort there mate position four but most of all some really good solid exchanges i mean
01:04:19as a race driver it is great to do some racing isn't it oh you know those guys at the front
01:04:22aren't messing about and it's really cool to be uh racing against them and giving them a bit of a
01:04:27hurry up at the same time um i would have done anything if uh anything for james if he had to
01:04:31stay behind me and i mean anything uh look i mean we're close to that podium and uh just really wrapped
01:04:36you know it's car's going really well and you're in position five for the next one off the grid but
01:04:40mate i often say it's a as a race driver in a car irrespective of your setup on the day you become a
01:04:45product of your environment so if you're in a train of cars traveling at a speed and today
01:04:50for the entirety of that race you traveled at front running pace and you're going to tell me i
01:04:54know that the car is really not much different it's funny how that works isn't it yeah it's
01:04:58really comes down to qualifying you know getting yourself up the front and obviously we've got to
01:05:02try and work on the tire life a little bit to try and match those other guys uh i know brydy there
01:05:06was uh sort of pacing himself a little bit at the start and maybe we'll take a similar approach
01:05:10in the next race if we get the opportunity um but you know you can just race your own lines at the
01:05:14front there everyone's worried about going forward not belting into you so um if we can do that again
01:05:19the next race i'll be wrapped and do you think we're expecting the tires were going to fall off
01:05:23a cliff did they sort of hang in there or if you really had to be focused in those early laps on
01:05:26managing that yeah you did have to manage and not try to excite the rear tire too much but
01:05:31funnily enough the the front tire for me went away more than the rear and just could not get the car
01:05:36turned uh at the end there so i had to really slow the car down and square the corner off a lot to try
01:05:41and make sure i maximize the exit all right don't worry about exciting to target out there and excite
01:05:45the crowd thank you very much cheers guys and tony delberto will start the next race from fifth so
01:05:50it's looking good on this sunday the championship point score as scafie's been mentioning throughout
01:05:55the race well jamie wing cup came here this weekend with 1803 points in the bank and he hasn't managed to
01:06:01move that all that's happened is that craig lowndes and mark winter bottom and co have chipped away at it
01:06:06so 55 points the difference to second 62 now as winter bottom moves up to third another 100 points
01:06:14on offer this afternoon time for the podium brettes our 26th race of the year the winton motor raceway

01:06:52the commercial director of v8 supercars presenting to second place is heather wallace
01:06:59executive officer winton motor raceway
01:07:06making the presentation to our winning team is the chief operating officer of v8 supercars shane howard
01:07:16and presenting the first place trophy is the victorian minister for sport
01:07:20the honorable hugh delahanty
01:07:26ladies and gentlemen the 2013 v8 supercars winton motor raceway race 26 winners
01:07:34he's waited a long time to stand on the top step of the podium at winton motor raceway mark winter
01:07:39bottom but now that is done he can focus on the next race it's his 22nd career win but he's first at this
01:07:46track yes you can celebrate now they spray away make sure you stick with us crompa will run us
01:07:55through all the highlights and that we've got some special competitions to tell you about later on in
01:07:58the day mark scape runs through his top five memories here at winton more to come on seven sport the winton 360
01:08:12well mark winter bottom never gave up the fight and paid dividends finally today in his 300th
01:08:22career race his 20th race at this circuit crompo he finally gets the victory here we've been speaking
01:08:28all weekend about how the numbers don't add up at winton motor raceway you can do thousands upon
01:08:34thousands of testing laps here you you've done a fair few thousand mark winter bottom has now finally
01:08:40the monkeys off the back it's a very important breakthrough because the really frustrating thing
01:08:45for mark and for his team they've come up here in years gone by and we've seen some of the stuff
01:08:49they've achieved in practice we've heard about the rumors of what they did in testing and then it never
01:08:54quite applied at the critical moment so you know there was the four pole positions that we've talked
01:08:58about but then for whatever reason failure to convert so being able to convert today will be a really
01:09:04important private milestone for both mark and the team i'm sure they'll celebrate it and i was looking
01:09:09through some stats just before we came back down here and while he's been with ford performance
01:09:13racing frosty's never even qualified outside the top 10 in that entire period that's a remarkable
01:09:18record so to be able to tick it and say here's a win that's great so he qualifies on the second row
01:09:22of the grid for this one when you go back to the very start this is effectively where he wins this
01:09:26race because jason bright starts on pole position and makes a mess of it now watch this the blue car
01:09:33just swoops around the outside it's a brave move it's a good reaction reactionary move and he makes
01:09:39it stick into turn one which then of course all the chaos breaks loose as alex premier goes through
01:09:45the dirt and rejoins that forced russell into the wall alex davidson also in trouble but the biggest
01:09:51whack came for jamie winkup that jump for mark winter bottom pretty much determined the outcome
01:09:57right there and then so he qualified third he was leading by the time they got to the first corner
01:10:01and away he went meantime down the order all sorts of people in all kinds of trouble this is jamie
01:10:06winkup all patched up great battle going on between bright and delberto and courtney here because the
01:10:11moves all happening down there at turn 10 and 11 all the stuff going on the back end of the race
01:10:17enormous amount of rubber and debris built up on the edge of the most crack big pressure at the back
01:10:22end also from jason bright on the tail of mark winter bottom but it wasn't quite enough when it
01:10:28counted there's andrew edwards who's the engineer for jason bright there was an engineering shuffle
01:10:31in that garage a while back and that seems to pay dividends for those guys who are doing well
01:10:35here's courtney down the inside of tony very impressed with the drive for tony delberto
01:10:40and as he said when you can race up the clean end of the field it makes an enormous difference
01:10:45there was some trouble there for tim blanchard he was mixed up with alex davidson copped a bad
01:10:49sportsmanship flag for his trouble tim and then all the boys from pepsi max sport performance racing on the
01:10:54wall to welcome home mark winter bottom by about three car lengths from jason bright in fact it was
01:10:59exactly point four of a second in the final analysis it was interesting to hear jason bright
01:11:04mention that he thought winter bottom was going so fast at the start of the race that he was headed
01:11:07for a pit stop and then he had to gather his thoughts and try and gather him in in the end
01:11:11he couldn't do so so this has been the big talking point jamie wing cup yet to put a point in the bank
01:11:16in terms of the championship this weekend so craig lowndes has managed to get it down to 55 points that could
01:11:22have been more mark winter bottom now moves up to third in the championship 62 points away with
01:11:27another 100 points on offer and the enduro is just around the corner red bull racing australia
01:11:33craig lowndes finishes in 12th in that race and as i mentioned another dnf for jamie wing cup
01:11:38larko's got more on that having a shocker down here there's a high of activity in fact i might
01:11:42even try and grab casey stoners down here casey i was going to tell this story of these two red bull cars
01:11:46here's the third horror story from the weekend not casey himself but gee whiz mate you just had
01:11:50said to me you need more than luck here this weekend uh it's not just this weekend i'm now
01:11:54becoming accustomed to it so uh you know race one's a horror for me and then we make our way up pretty
01:11:59way race two and then get thrown further back on the grid again for race three so it's um you know
01:12:05it makes it tough especially around this place and and now after main game being out there on the soft
01:12:09tires there's a lot of uh there's going to be a lot of pickup on the outside so it's not uh not going to
01:12:14be good for us to make any sort of passes and what do you do mate i mean you're position 31 and you
01:12:18know it's going to be a hard gig it's a tight little circuit i mean do you just go and enjoy it
01:12:22uh you try and enjoy it but uh even then you don't get to run some fast laps because you're always in
01:12:28traffic you're always you know watching your front watching your back waiting to get you know bumped
01:12:32into the corners so uh you know this morning was amazing we we went the whole race without a safety
01:12:37car it was awesome but uh again 12 laps just sort of it's not enough to do anything with all right if
01:12:42you can't enjoy it do us a favor go and entertain us we look forward to watching thanks casey
01:12:46have a quick look around here so uh craig lounge's car now you see it's sitting up there not much
01:12:50happening there that's because the engineers will be out there going through the data here it is here's
01:12:54all the sorts of data they look at looking at the data trying to identify why that car is not going
01:12:59fast enough which frankly it has not done all weekend they just haven't done a good enough job of
01:13:04getting that sorted and uh they'll be changing i'm sure shock absorbers springs and settings on that
01:13:09car jamie winkup's car behind me now we saw the damage uh it's a little bit of air box damage so
01:13:13they're going to repair that keeping pressure in your air box is really really important not just
01:13:17keeping the dirt out of your engine in under here they're replacing when we refer to in our racing
01:13:21game they're replacing a corner now corner effectively is a a top wishbone there's a wishbone
01:13:26you can see why they call it a wishbone that's the bottom one you can see there and then an upright
01:13:30which is that component sitting on the ground over there which is the bit the wheel goes on to
01:13:34here's all the broken bits under the cover here i won't expose too much of that but you can see there
01:13:38you are there's the broken wishbone we're talking about in the telecast so uh quite frankly and i can't put
01:13:43my finger on why this is one of the worst weekends i've ever seen come out of this garage
01:13:48well shane van gisbergen with me now shane uh solid result fifth place in that race uh tough racing
01:13:56out there but good to get that fifth on the board yeah it's just so hard to pass here but from
01:14:00queensland raceway even yesterday we really struggled in the races qualified well and just had a drop like
01:14:05a stone in the races with everyone passing us so took a big swing in it uh setup wise and it was a lot
01:14:10better could push on and i was looking out the front window instead of the back one so
01:14:13uh big improvement but now we're starting 10th so uh unless there's some strategy differences i it's
01:14:20hard to see it moving forward it's so hard to pass but um need a safety car so people will pair to a
01:14:24wheel pit and try something different to spice it up the good news in the championship now you've
01:14:29climbed up to eighth spot and this whole championship race is sort of compressed with jamie wincup's couple
01:14:33of dnfs good for your championship picture yeah we're just being consistent and getting points and
01:14:38even though we really struggled at queensland raceway and yesterday still getting good results
01:14:42out of it so um if we keep consistent there's uh no reason why we can't keep catching jamie if he
01:14:47has problems because he's uh up the back again on this one well shane we know how much you love to
01:14:51race and pass so we know you'll get a couple from 10th spot good luck yeah we'll try our best cheers
