00:00:00So the countdown is on now to race 33, the fourth last race of 2013, as this intense
00:00:12championship battle continues to unfold, where Jamie Winkup leads by just 14 points.
00:00:18We've been asking you the question of that incident yesterday involving Mark Winterbottom
00:00:22and Craig Lowndes.
00:00:23Remember, it went to protest, and did you think at home that Frosty would be penalised?
00:00:28Well, the majority said yes, 56%, but I can tell you folks that the answer has officially
00:00:34come in, and there will be no penalty for that gutsy move on the last lap of the first
00:00:39half yesterday.
00:00:40The stewards did not find that his conduct amounted to careless driving, did not amount
00:00:45to unintentional action, and they also found that it didn't fall below the standard of
00:00:50competent racing driver in the V8 Supercars Championship.
00:00:53So good news, Frosty fans.
00:00:55He's in the clear.
00:00:56Larco?
00:00:57Maybe not so good for Lowndes fans, but we probably don't need to dwell on that, mate.
00:01:00I know you're thinking you're out of the race.
00:01:02Now, for what it's worth, mate, I've just had a look at your tyres.
00:01:04I know you've only done a warm-up lap.
00:01:06They look very good, Craig.
00:01:07They look very fast.
00:01:08Yeah, they are.
00:01:09I think that's Larco.
00:01:10I think the car was not at its best the first qualifying, second qualifying we made the
00:01:14car really good.
00:01:15The car feels good.
00:01:16Obviously, the weather's dropped a little bit as well.
00:01:18Cool temperatures.
00:01:19I think that those 23 laps are going to be pretty exciting.
00:01:21The other thing I want to ask you, mate, you're back here in the grid a bit.
00:01:23Position eight, you know yourself to have a crack at this championship.
00:01:26You're going to have to hustle here, mate.
00:01:27You're going to have to push and shove a little bit.
00:01:28Eyes on.
00:01:29Yeah, it's going to be exciting.
00:01:32Good luck, pal.
00:01:33Barrett?
00:01:34Hey, Larco.
00:01:35Speaking of exciting, Mark Winterbottom, position three.
00:01:36He's directly behind Fabian Coulthard.
00:01:38Right beside him is the championship leader, Jamie Wincup.
00:01:41This is going to be game on.
00:01:42This is serious play today, Frosty.
00:01:44Yeah, it is.
00:01:45You know, all I can do is, I guess, concentrate on what I've got to do, and that was qualify
00:01:49well and we've got two good starting spots, but it's a bit ironic that both races you're
00:01:53starting next to car one once and car triple eight another time, so yeah, see how it goes.
00:02:00It's on.
00:02:01It's championship end.
00:02:02There's been the drama yesterday, but I'm sure that's probably just the start of what's
00:02:06going to unfold in this championship, but yeah, just got to concentrate on what we can
00:02:09do and get the best result we can.
00:02:11Frosty, speaking of drama, there was the hearing this morning.
00:02:14We've heard that that has been dismissed.
00:02:15You're in the clear.
00:02:16That's good news.
00:02:17That clears your mind for the race?
00:02:18Yeah, I knew I was in the clear anyway because it was just ridiculous.
00:02:22The fact that two drivers can sort of agree on whatever we agreed on, Lounsie and I, and
00:02:28then it has to be taken further when, you know, it was not a dive bomb.
00:02:33We've seen things this year where cars hit the back and push someone, whatever.
00:02:36It was a momentum move.
00:02:38When we locked wheels, that's what caused the big uproar at the end, but, you know,
00:02:42I want to beat him.
00:02:43I don't want to crash people off, and he wants to do the same, I'm sure, so to go in the
00:02:48I don't know.
00:02:49To me, it gives me motivation because I know they're trying to take points off me and they
00:02:53must think I'm a threat, so it gave me motivation, so it was a good hour.
00:02:57I'll probably never get that hour back, but it was a good hour.
00:03:00Time to race now.
00:03:01Enjoy it.
00:03:02Yeah, let's go.
00:03:03Let's get this done, so thanks, mate.
00:03:04Now, you can see and hear Shane van Gisbergen, position six.
00:03:06He's deep in concentration.
00:03:07I don't like disturbing drivers at this point, but Shane, mate, a lot of conjecture yesterday.
00:03:11You were in amongst the rough and tumble yesterday, having a bit of a push around yourself, bit
00:03:14of a nudge there on Will Davidson.
00:03:16What's your response to some of the things that have been said?
00:03:19Yeah, yesterday was full-on.
00:03:20Unfortunately, I made a mistake with Chas.
00:03:23I tried to follow Fabian through past him, and I lost all front aero and just underscored
00:03:27into him, and unfortunately, he only lost a couple of places, but I never want to make
00:03:32contact with anyone, so I went and apologized to him, but a couple of corners later, gave
00:03:37Will Davidson room to pass me, and we went two-by-two around the hairpin, and then he
00:03:42just turned across on me in the next corner.
00:03:45I know he's battling for a championship, but I'm doing the best I can for my team, and
00:03:49unfortunately, he wrapped around my bonnet.
00:03:51As a driver, mate, that's what you've got to do, so good luck today, Shane, and it's
00:03:55an important consideration, because when you're not battling for a championship, it does allow
00:03:58you to be a lot more aggressive than these other four guys we've been talking about this
00:04:02weekend, particularly this one here.
00:04:05We want to try and grab a quick word with Jamie Winker.
00:04:08Hey, Jamie, when I was doing my little whiteboard yesterday there, mate, I did observe you having
00:04:12a little read of it.
00:04:13I said on there, don't discount, meaning don't discount Winkup.
00:04:16You are the best in the business, mate.
00:04:18I know you don't like hearing that, but we can't discount you, and here you are, back
00:04:21in the lead again, but wow, mate, this is tough.
00:04:24This is mentally tough, this today, isn't it?
00:04:25Yeah, it's been an unbelievably tough weekend for us.
00:04:29We're here or thereabouts, but we certainly haven't been the quickest car by a long shot,
00:04:32so made some more changes for today, once again.
00:04:35It's a big question mark, but big 23 laps ahead of us, and then we'll regroup and go
00:04:40again.
00:04:41All right, good luck, buddy.
00:04:42All right.
00:04:43Hey, Larko, what an exciting day for Brad Jones Racing, both cars on the front, rather
00:04:47get brighty just in second spot, Fabian Coulthard here on pole position.
00:04:50Fabian, great to have your team mate beside you.
00:04:53Is that make you feel a little bit more comfortable, or is he here to race?
00:04:56No, we're both here to race, you know, obviously.
00:04:58We keep it clean and fair, and that's what boss, the Brad, tells us to do, so look, it
00:05:03should be a good start.
00:05:04You know, hopefully we both get away cleanly and, you know, be able to wait, leave the
00:05:08battling until later on in the race, but awesome for Lockwood, awesome for BOC, for both cars
00:05:12to be on the front row.
00:05:13Hey, pole position anywhere is great, but on this circuit, it's particularly important.
00:05:17Yeah, the view's awesome as well.
00:05:19Yeah, look, you know, you've got to, you know, qualify at the front, you know, we try and
00:05:23do that every race.
00:05:25The big thing is, you know, you've got clear track in front of you, you don't have disturbed
00:05:28air from the cars in front of you, you know, hopefully we can get away off the start cleanly
00:05:32and hopefully be able to dictate the race.
00:05:34All right, Fabian, all the very best.
00:05:35We might just duck over and try and have a quick chat with Jason Bryant, and big race
00:05:39for Brydie, too.
00:05:40They both qualified very well, these guys, so great performance by both the BOC car and
00:05:45Fabian Coulthard.
00:05:46Brydie, great to see you on the front row.
00:05:47Fabian says he's really going to race, there's no team friends here.
00:05:51Oh, mate, there's no team orders, but, you know, we also don't want to take each other
00:05:54out, so we'll just see what happens on the run of the turn one.
00:05:57I'm not the best starter, but I intend to make it a better one this time.
00:06:00Hey, great to be on the front row, though, isn't it?
00:06:02Does give you an edge.
00:06:03Yeah, it is, you know, we were a bit unlucky yesterday in qualifying, it was a pretty mixed
00:06:07up session.
00:06:08I feel like we've had a car quick enough to be in the top three all weekend, so, you know,
00:06:12hopefully we can have a good run here.
00:06:14I want to finish the year well, and, you know, being my 200th starter, it'd be good to get
00:06:18a good result here.
00:06:19Exactly.
00:06:20Congratulations on that, and congratulations on a fantastic team year.
00:06:22It's been brilliant for you guys and Brad Jones, he's loved it this year.
00:06:25Yeah, no, it's been a good year.
00:06:28The environment there is really good, and, you know, that's the sort of environment that
00:06:32does thrive, and, you know, going into next year, we've got good stability, so, you know,
00:06:37it's all good for the future as well.
00:06:38Good on you, Brady.
00:06:39Well done.
00:06:40Jason Bright has already won twice this year at Tasmania and New Zealand, but he's yet
00:06:45to win a race at this circuit.
00:06:47He's been second twice, 2001 and 2003, and, of course, yesterday wobbled across the finish
00:06:53line, so let's zero in on exactly where we are and what the playground is.
00:06:57We all know it so well, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, a mainstay on two wheels
00:07:01and four in Australian motorsport over so many years.
00:07:04It is fast, it's sweeping, it's just a spectacular circuit, and this is the championship picture.
00:07:13So it changed yesterday.
00:07:14You'll remember that Craig Lowndes came into this weekend six points ahead of Winka.
00:07:18After all that drama yesterday, it was Jamie who now has the lead back by 14 points.
00:07:25Interestingly, Mark Winterbottom, through all those trials and tribulations yesterday,
00:07:30ended up exactly where he was.
00:07:32And score-wise, 88 points adrift.
00:07:36Brett Jones Racing locking out the front row for race 33 of the year.
00:07:40Let's have a look at the Fuso starting grid for race number 33 of this championship.
00:07:48And Fabian Krugthardt, who leaps away, his third pole of 2013.
00:07:53Jason Bright alongside him, he's had two race wins this year.
00:07:56Mark Winterbottom's got great car speed at Phillip Island this weekend.
00:08:00Jamie Winka is the championship leader.
00:08:03Chas Mostert, the winner at Queensland Raceway.
00:08:05Then it's Shane van Gisbergen will be next in the queue, the Clipsal 500 winner of 2013.
00:08:11David Wall, Brett Jones Racing, the third car of that group inside the top ten.
00:08:15Fantastic job.
00:08:16Second man in the championship, Craig Lowndes.
00:08:17Then it's Alex Davison on the podium yesterday.
00:08:20Davey Reynolds has had some problems with right rear punctures this weekend.
00:08:24And Scott Pye, an excellent performance for the event sponsor, Sargent Security.
00:08:28Michael Caruso, the best of the Nissans.
00:08:29There's Will Davison, fourth in the championship.
00:08:31Garth Tander, yesterday's race winner.
00:08:34Team Hi-Flex at Tony Dalberto.
00:08:37And Todd Kelly, the Jack Daniels Racing Nissan Altima has Rick Kelly behind him.
00:08:42Tim Blanchard, that qualifying session didn't go as well as the start to his weekend.
00:08:47But look out for Tim, he's on a good roll.
00:08:50Russell Ingle, farewells Phillip Island this weekend after all these years.
00:08:54Jonathan Webb in the Daryl Leed Techno entry.
00:08:57Position 23 for Scott McLachlan, 24 for the German, Mauro Engel.
00:09:02And the last two spots on the grid go to Tim Slade and Dean Fiore,
00:09:05James Courtney and Alex Premer.
00:09:08They're both headed home.
00:09:09Their cars so severely damaged in that huge crash yesterday down at turn four.
00:09:17Rick Kelly, 17th on the grid.
00:09:20There's Chas Mostert.
00:09:23Chas is going to start out at position number five.
00:09:28That's a very good qualifying performance by Chas.
00:09:30This is a very, very fast circuit.
00:09:33One of the most difficult to do a really good lap of.
00:09:36And Chas has been very fast this weekend.
00:09:38Dave Reynolds, we've seen some right-hand rear drama with the tyre deflation and puncture.
00:09:45And we found out a little bit more about that.
00:09:47The rear camber is what the guys were saying within the team.
00:09:50We're on board there with Russell Ingle and now Scott McLachlan.
00:09:52So we've got so much of the field covered for you.
00:09:56Scott at the back of the field today is not happy with the car and qualifying.
00:09:59And as we just indicated, Alex Premer from that massive crash yesterday will not be lining up.
00:10:07Jamie Winkup in P4 alongside Winterbottom.
00:10:11This is very, very crucial.
00:10:13Quick shout out, James Courtney will be watching at home.
00:10:16Won't want to be doing that.
00:10:17Same too for Alex Premer.
00:10:18But more importantly, great friend of the industry, noted journalist John Evans.
00:10:23He's not well at the moment.
00:10:24We know that he's watching.
00:10:26We love having him in the paddock.
00:10:27He's a great professional, a great mate, a great bloke.
00:10:29And we wish you the best, John.
00:10:30We want to see you back here very soon.
00:10:33100%, one of the leading automotive journalists in and around our sport for a long time.
00:10:38So all the very best.

00:10:57This incredible championship of 2013, unlike anything we've had before.
00:11:0417 different race winners, 13 of those the full-timers.
00:11:08So four coming through the Enduro events.
00:11:11Five rookie winners this season, nine different teams.
00:11:16And now this championship battle that is providing story after story.
00:11:23Good, bad and in between.
00:11:25Great flag, great flag.
00:11:26How are they going to play this one?
00:11:28100 kilometres, 23 laps at this awesome racing circuit.
00:11:33Fulton and Bright on the front row.
00:11:35But the championship contenders, Winterbottom and Wincup on the second row.
00:11:39They're going to have to go around Jason Bright for the second day in a row and they do so.
00:11:44So Coulthard holding his own.
00:11:46Look at Chas Mostyn.
00:11:47Four wide into turn one.
00:11:49There will be drama and there is.
00:11:51Winterbottom gets a touch.
00:11:53He somehow stays on the circuit.
00:11:55One of the Ultimates goes straight off, the Norton Hornet.
00:11:58I think that may have been Moffat because there's Caruso.
00:12:00So it was Moffat out off the road one.
00:12:05Frosty was really beaten and battered going into turn one there.
00:12:10And they're all on the radio offering personal references.
00:12:15So Wincup has the lead from Mostyn.
00:12:17Lowndes up to third.
00:12:18Then Van Gisberg.
00:12:20And there is Winterbottom on the outside at turn four.
00:12:23So he's dropped back to about sixth, possibly seventh.
00:12:28Bright's just tumbled down the order after that start.
00:12:30Look where he's battling at the moment.
00:12:32He's with David Wall.
00:12:32He's teammate and Michael Caruso from the front row of the grid.
00:12:37He's going to lose another spot here.
00:12:40That was insane.
00:12:43Absolutely insane.
00:12:45The big winner is the championship leader.
00:12:48The big loser is Mark Winterbottom.
00:12:51And of course, Jason Bright.
00:12:53Now four abreast at one of Australia's fastest corners.
00:12:55Down the inside now.
00:12:57Davison on Caruso.
00:12:59No contact.
00:13:00This is where he was spun yesterday.
00:13:03So Wincup, what a first lap from P4 to the lead.
00:13:10Mostyn from the third row of the grid into position two and threatening.
00:13:17So where does Winterbottom end up after lap one?
00:13:20He's in eighth.
00:13:23And Bright from position two has dropped down to position ten.
00:13:27So that's going to make it a long race and a long afternoon for him.
00:13:31And Lowndes from eighth to third.
00:13:33Todd Kelly off the road.
00:13:35He's got to climb back on and gather it up.
00:13:36Because it's actually quite difficult to stop at turn two there once you've toured the grass.
00:13:40And the tires will be wet when they come back on.
00:13:43He did a really good job to control the car then.
00:13:50Lowndes now on Mostyn.
00:13:51Inside of turn four.
00:13:53It makes it a little awkward when he gets down to Siberia.
00:13:55Puts him on the outside of the road.
00:13:57Mostyn knows that.
00:13:58And he's got the edge as they turn left.
00:14:04Jamie will be hoping that Craig puts enough pressure on Mostyn to keep him away.
00:14:09To allow Jamie a little bit of breathing space.
00:14:11We've heard all weekend that they're not really satisfied with the car balance.
00:14:15And the performance of the car this weekend so far.
00:14:18On board there with Lowndes through the hay shed.
00:14:20Winterbottom's got his hands full at the moment with David Reynolds.
00:14:23Who in turn is fending off Garth Tandon.
00:14:25Lowndes down the inside.
00:14:26Good move.
00:14:27And done.
00:14:28Van Gisbergen tries to buy in two.
00:14:30Side by side to the left-hander.
00:14:31Oh, they're crossed up.
00:14:33Lowndes is out in the dirty grey stuff here.
00:14:35Watch for Van Gisbergen on the inside.
00:14:37Because he'll gain from all of this.
00:14:38And he has.
00:14:42That's Coulthard.
00:14:44That was very close.
00:14:45Coulthard almost gave Mostyn a hit.
00:14:50And that's Jeremy Moore.
00:14:51Just be patient.
00:14:57So, no rules apply is what Greg Lowndes has just said to Jeremy.
00:15:02So, he's still blowing about the racing room.
00:15:06And that was a pretty close moment as he ran wide with Mostyn around the inside.
00:15:12So, now he's just got to compose himself.
00:15:14Take a deep breath.
00:15:15Get organised.
00:15:15Go and pluck a position.
00:15:18One at a time.
00:15:19Clavia Coulthard, the next one in the queue.
00:15:22So, from third to fifth for Lowndes.
00:15:24Up the inside again now.
00:15:25Coulthard at turn four.
00:15:27That gap closes off though as you get a little further around the corner.
00:15:31Be careful.
00:15:32Yeah.
00:15:32He's had two goes at that now.
00:15:34And it takes nothing for the turn in.
00:15:37For steering damage.
00:15:37Exactly.
00:15:38Bad start.
00:15:38Check.
00:15:40Bright out there from the front row.
00:15:42He went down to tenth.
00:15:43Have a look at this at the first corner.
00:15:44So, Mostyn's down the inside of Coulthard.
00:15:46Being pushed by Van Gisbergen.
00:15:48Contact there.
00:15:49And Van Gisbergen and Winnebottom make wheel-to-wheel contact.
00:15:56The original contact for Winnebottom came with Chas Mostyn.
00:16:01And at one stage there,
00:16:03they were in danger of being five wide going down as Shane Van Gisbergen had a look.
00:16:09How they stayed on the road, I do not know.
00:16:12This is on board from Craig Lowndes' view.
00:16:15Watch this.
00:16:15He'd be thinking, you're joking.
00:16:19So, as Shane went to the right,
00:16:22he almost ended up turning across the front.
00:16:25And remember, they're on stone-cold tyres.
00:16:27They got no grip at all when they arrived down there at turn one.
00:16:30Here's the replay of what happened to Lowndes,
00:16:31third to fifth in one manoeuvre at Van Gisbergen, the beneficiary.
00:16:36Well, the door opened for him at turn one,
00:16:39but it closed pretty hard at turn ten, didn't it?
00:16:41It was a manoeuvre that he was trying to put on young Chas Mostyn.
00:16:47One of the rookies had five different rookie winners this year.
00:16:50Chas Mostyn's done a great job.
00:16:52Lowndes was down the inside.
00:16:55This is on board now with Lowndes on the rev limiter,
00:16:58so the tailwind there.
00:16:59He's going to have another go at this.
00:17:02He's finished third tour of this.
00:17:03He's got him a little wider this time.
00:17:04He might get away with it,
00:17:05and he'll try and feed him across to the left to close off the gap,
00:17:08but he's still not there.
00:17:09There's still a tonne and a half of hold underneath Craig Lowndes,
00:17:12and he's vulnerable now to Alex Davison in the forward.
00:17:16He's got more pace at the moment, Lowndes,
00:17:17but he's going to have to patiently apply it.
00:17:20This is wild.
00:17:21This is one of the fastest corners on our tour.
00:17:26The Hay Shed, turn eight,
00:17:29240 kilometres an hour on the exit of it.
00:17:32They were right alongside each other.
00:17:34He's going to have another go down here at MG.
00:17:36I think he'll get it done this time,
00:17:37and it'll be helped by Alex Davison.
00:17:42So that's back to position four now for Craig Lowndes, Alex Davison.
00:17:48Winterbottom's got to try and get a wriggle on here somehow as well
00:17:51to get back into this battle.
00:17:52The man that he's racing in the championship,
00:17:55Wintcup, is the leader.
00:17:59Wintcup first, van Gisbergen,
00:18:01Mostert, Lowndes, Coulthard, Davison, Winterbottom seven.
00:18:05Will Davison, fourth in the championship, is 11.
00:18:10Watch for Davison here,
00:18:11because this is a pretty lively manoeuvre.
00:18:13A way out of one.
00:18:14David's struggling.
00:18:15His DTM car wasn't turning at all through one.
00:18:17You can see how much extra road he needed to get through turn one.
00:18:21Alex Davison was able to position the Falcon pretty much where he wanted to.
00:18:29Mark Winterbottom now, right up in behind Davison.
00:18:34Look how Lowndes has skipped away once he got some fresh air there.
00:18:43This is Mark Winterbottom.
00:18:48This is Siberia.
00:18:51This is a great run.
00:18:51This is turn eight up here.
00:18:53A little left-hand kink.
00:18:56Fifth gear.
00:18:57Listen.
00:18:58No.
00:18:59In fact, a long way from it.
00:19:00Quite a feather.
00:19:01Tailwind.
00:19:02Tailwind and also right behind the other car.
00:19:04So the aero effect of Alex Davison takes the front grip away from the car behind.
00:19:14Listen to the throttle.
00:19:17Gear change to change direction.
00:19:20Gentle modulation there.
00:19:22Wheel spin.
00:19:29And he's going to be asking for position here, Mark Winterbottom.
00:19:32Remember, these two head-butted each other in New Zealand at Pukekohe.
00:19:36So Windcup's the leader.
00:19:38Van Gisbergen, Mostert, Lowndes, Coulthard, Davison we're looking at on screen,
00:19:42and we're riding with Winterbottom.
00:19:43More to play.
00:19:50What a sight as these V8 supercars roar around the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.
00:19:56Jamie Windcup's doing it the best at the moment.
00:19:59He leads by 2.4 seconds over Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:20:03That's the pack we're looking at.
00:20:04Chas Mostert in third.
00:20:06Lowndes tucked in behind him in fourth.
00:20:08Fabian Coulthard from pole to fifth.
00:20:11Neil and I were just laughing in the break
00:20:13because Chas would be very encouraged to get by Van Gisbergen
00:20:16because when Lowndes gets back to him, it'll be the wave.
00:20:19Remember me?
00:20:20We had that little driver a couple of laps ago.
00:20:22Good run. Very good run.
00:20:24A little bit wide there for Van Gisbergen.
00:20:26Van Gisbergen will leave it on the right-hand side of the road
00:20:28and make Chas do the hard yards to get down the inside.
00:20:32It's not really a passing spot,
00:20:34especially when there's a headwind which reduces the braking area.
00:20:38How's the oversteer?
00:20:39The body language and the slide is just fantastic.
00:20:43This is why this place is the best permanent racetrack of the lot.
00:20:48Big, fast, European-style corners.
00:20:51210 kilometers an hour.
00:20:52Then we watched Van Gisbergen oversteer his way through turn one.
00:20:57When you focus on the rear of Shane's car, you can see how busy he is.
00:21:00In fact, Mostert was busy then.
00:21:02Turn three, it wagged its tail.
00:21:04That's a big incentive for Lowndes.
00:21:07It had a big slide as he tried to pull it up
00:21:09and then get it organized for turn four.
00:21:14Lowndes is getting that Royal Wave ready.
00:21:19He's the king of the Morse code, isn't he?
00:21:21Just give you a bump, another bump, another bump, another bump.
00:21:28The proximity of Lowndes has just diverted the attention of Mostert
00:21:32for a moment to give him a little bit of a breather, Van Gisbergen.
00:21:35But look at this.
00:21:36They've tightened up again over the top of Lurkie Heights.
00:21:39In the background, Garth Tander was too abreast through the hay shed.
00:21:43Let's make sure we find him in the background.
00:21:45That was with Bright.
00:21:46And Bright got him in that move.
00:21:48There they are.
00:21:50And Mostert was very strong onto the straight last time through.
00:21:53There's Pye as well.
00:21:54He's 12th at the moment.
00:21:56He hasn't quite got the ground that he had in the previous lap this time, Mostert.
00:22:01And Lowndes has lost a little bit through the top section.
00:22:03And you've got to time the run because the aero effect is it hurts you in the corner.
00:22:08But good in the straight.
00:22:09Oh, that is as close at 285 kilometres an hour.
00:22:13That's as close as you ever get to making contact.
00:22:16We saw Van Gisbergen and Davison have drama there last year.
00:22:20You see when we were on board there before with Chas,
00:22:22the wiper on that thing lifting off at a high speed.
00:22:25Lucky there's no water around at the moment.
00:22:27Guys, Fabian Coulthard just reporting some understeer.
00:22:30Brad Jones, at the moment, are you working with it?
00:22:32Yeah, he's a little unhappy, I think, in the car.
00:22:35He's not really saying too much at the moment.
00:22:37So these three in front look like they're putting on a ding-dong die.
00:22:40So hopefully they can drag themselves back towards Fabian a little bit.
00:22:44But, you know, after having two cars on the front row,
00:22:47it's a bit disappointing not to have one of them up there.
00:22:49But I think for Bridie, back in the pack,
00:22:51you end up with so much aero push that it's hard to compete against it.
00:22:54Thanks, Brad. Good luck.
00:22:57Mostert had a very serious nibble then,
00:22:59trying to get underneath the VIP Petfood's entry.
00:23:01Oh, that was lounge. That was speedway action.
00:23:04That was about 220 kilometres an hour right out sideways.
00:23:10You've got to be careful,
00:23:11because you don't want to hurt the rear tyre too much.
00:23:13It superheats the surface temperature of the tyre,
00:23:16and it takes a third of a lap or more,
00:23:18half a lap to recover if you do too much of that.
00:23:21Now, Mostert's better positioned this time.
00:23:23So watch his run through the final corner.
00:23:25He picked up the throttle early two laps ago.
00:23:27Let's listen and look.
00:23:31He's shallow and into it hard.
00:23:33He's got a good corner exit speed.
00:23:34There's that wiper I spoke about before,
00:23:36just waving to the crowd.
00:23:38He's got to get it across.
00:23:39He's got to run. He's got to run. He's got to run.
00:23:44Oh, and Matt Gisbergenstein has a little check sideways
00:23:47just as he turns it in.
00:23:49That's an awkward feeling,
00:23:50and remember that the car following is disturbing the aero
00:23:53on the preceding car.
00:23:54That's one of the reasons why Shane's car is misbehaving down there.
00:23:58You can feel it.
00:23:59Look at this.
00:24:01What a catch.
00:24:02On board, have a look.
00:24:03Have a look at the oversteer.
00:24:04Check the steering.
00:24:08He did it on the kerbing.
00:24:09And the slowest speed through there is 200 kilometres an hour.
00:24:13Slowest speed.
00:24:16Lownes will be looking at these two
00:24:18because they're very brave, Mostert and Van Gisbergen.
00:24:21Last lap, as Neil said,
00:24:22Mostert almost got down the inside at Siberia.
00:24:25Lownes will be looking, saying,
00:24:26these boys play for keeps here.
00:24:27These are serious.
00:24:29And all this is good news for Wincup up ahead
00:24:31who's now 4.2 seconds clear.
00:24:34The longer these three fight, the better it is for the race leader.
00:24:38That's a great observation.
00:24:39So you're Lownes, you're in a championship hunt.
00:24:41Tell me two guys you wouldn't want in front of you to try and get past.
00:24:44There they are right there.
00:24:45Look, here we go again.
00:24:46But what's really important here,
00:24:48all the drivers go home and watch these telecasts,
00:24:50and Chas Mostert, he's indifferent, he doesn't care who it is.
00:24:53Lownes, Wincup, Van Gisbergen, he'll take you.
00:24:55And I just think he's telegraphing that message to everyone.
00:24:59Yeah, I totally agree.
00:25:00It's a very good performance, Larco.
00:25:02This is the spot.
00:25:03He's into it again.
00:25:04Oh, big slide then.
00:25:05That might be it.
00:25:06No, he actually lost ground
00:25:08because the aero effect on Mostert's car.
00:25:10And he's actually vulnerable to Lownes.
00:25:12Lownes could round him up here in this move.
00:25:14So Chas was affected by Shane having to check up mid-corner.
00:25:18Oh, they all drop back into the queue.
00:25:20But they're playing serious games here for keeps at the moment.
00:25:24And Mostert nearly ran out of road on the exit of one.
00:25:27He was a winner here in Formula Ford back in 2009.
00:25:29But because there's no Dunlop Series driving here,
00:25:32he's had next to no exposure other than years ago.
00:25:35So he's doing a brilliant job.
00:25:41He's holding off the all-time race winner in this sport.
00:25:45Down at turn four, he's gone wide.
00:25:47Lownes will go through.
00:25:49So after all that tapping and all that telegraphing,
00:25:52Lownes gets it done cleanly and moves up to third.
00:25:58What a battle it's been in the first 10 laps of this race.
00:26:03It's been nothing but plain sailing, though,
00:26:06for the championship leader, Winkup.
00:26:08Leads by five seconds.
00:26:16Sergeant Security, Phillip Island, 360,
00:26:19sees Jamie Winkup leading by almost six seconds.
00:26:22Now to Craig Lownes.
00:26:24Slops into second.
00:26:26So he's got past Mostert.
00:26:28Now he's got past Van Gisbergen.
00:26:31The next man he's got to try and hunt down over the next 10 laps
00:26:34is his team-mate.
00:26:36It looked as though Shane got it stopped,
00:26:38but then in the mid-corner it pushed wide.
00:26:40So he was delayed getting the throttle on Craig
00:26:42just easily sliced him then and went by.
00:26:45What you'll find, too, now, Neil, that Winkup,
00:26:49that's the gap back to his team-mate now in P2.
00:26:52But what you'll find is the tyre condition now
00:26:54starting to get knocked around.
00:26:56Halfway through this race, effectively,
00:26:58and we will see cars in the final part of this race
00:27:02have a much different methodology of keeping that speed,
00:27:06keeping the flow off the road at Loogie Heights
00:27:09because the tyre condition,
00:27:11this is the hardest place in Australia on tyres.
00:27:14And the last part is always difficult.
00:27:18So what they want to do with Winkup is actually slow him up.
00:27:21They want to just read the race
00:27:23and drive the car as slow as you possibly can
00:27:25to maintain that gap over Craig.
00:27:28Probably an opportune time to grab a quick word with Roll and Dane.
00:27:32Looks like that's...
00:27:34Yeah, we might get a safety car here.
00:27:36These guys are going to be on to this.
00:27:38Just bear with us.
00:27:39So that's Caruso parked in the paddock
00:27:41and we saw his team-mate Moffat off at the top of Loogie Heights.
00:27:44And this, depending on the view of the race directory,
00:27:46is a long way from the racetrack.
00:27:48But it is so fast.
00:27:52There you go. Safety car will be deployed.
00:27:54It's an oil pressure issue, I hear, for Caruso.
00:28:00So he just pulls wide to try and stay out of everyone's way.
00:28:04Ooh, McLaughlin!
00:28:06OK, so it was Scott. Scott took James...
00:28:09Scott McLaughlin took James Moffat off
00:28:11and that was an avoiding action for James.
00:28:13So that was the reason why we saw the first of the Nissan Hornets out there.
00:28:16As Caruso does open-heart surgery on his car,
00:28:20the safety car is out.
00:28:22We're back here at Phillip Island in a tick.
00:28:29The last time we saw Car 36,
00:28:31Michael Caruso was doing some DIY mechanics.
00:28:34He's decided to just call in the help
00:28:37as the Nissan Altima is dragged away
00:28:40and the Pettis STP safety car is in control of the field.
00:28:43So that condenses, of course, that lead that Jamie Wincup had.
00:28:47It was out to six seconds.
00:28:49He was at the stage of having his own party out there
00:28:52where he could have his cake and eat it too,
00:28:54but now it's like a giant cupcake
00:28:56that Lowndes just wants to take away from him.
00:28:58Marco?
00:28:59Yeah, sorry, mate, I interrupted before,
00:29:01just as we were about to get a safety car rolling.
00:29:03Now, it's been an up-and-down weekend at this stage,
00:29:05but you've managed to get your cars back up the front one too.
00:29:08That's championship stuff and I like seeing that.
00:29:10But how do you manage that from here, mate?
00:29:12Because you know yourself, Craig's lap time's a little faster than Jamie's.
00:29:16Drivers racing each other are typically slower than the field.
00:29:19How do you manage this now?
00:29:21Oh, look, you've got to leave it to their common sense, I hope,
00:29:23that they're not going to trip over each other
00:29:25and if one's quicker than the other, then he's got to race for it.
00:29:28But at the end of the day, I just don't want them to trip over each other.
00:29:31But, yeah, it's racing.
00:29:33Anything can happen.
00:29:34We could be back up in the stewards' room later.
00:29:36Who knows?
00:29:37It has been a tough weekend in terms of stewards.
00:29:40And we've still got Sydney to go and I know you guys,
00:29:43you're not going to rest on your laurels,
00:29:45but this has been a particularly tough weekend.
00:29:47What do you put it down to?
00:29:48Oh, yeah, I mean, first time we've been to Phillip Island
00:29:51with these cars, resurfaced as well, new tyre,
00:29:56you know, a lot of variables.
00:29:58It was very windy this morning as well in that first qualifying session.
00:30:02It caught us out a little bit.
00:30:04Yeah, there's plenty going on
00:30:05and it's a great race track to be out though.
00:30:07It certainly is.
00:30:08Now, just while you stand aside, you don't do much here.
00:30:10These blokes do all the work.
00:30:11Mark Dutton and Jeremy Moore, they're two young engineers.
00:30:13Tune in to V8 Extra next Saturday
00:30:14because we have a bit of a closer look at what these guys do behind the scenes.
00:30:17Very interesting.
00:30:18And also coming up, Larco,
00:30:19Neil Crompton has done a one-on-one interview with Roland Dain
00:30:23and it's a fascinating chat
00:30:25on just how he manages these very situations.
00:30:28How do you manage the teammates and tread that fine line
00:30:31between letting them race as individuals
00:30:33but knowing that there is a team factor to this sport?
00:30:38It's a really incredible chat
00:30:40and that's coming up after this race.
00:30:43It's just bizarre, isn't it, boys?
00:30:46This is going to go right down to Sydney 500.
00:30:48Let's not forget the Jamie Wynn Cup
00:30:50is yet to be on the podium at Sydney Olympic Park.
00:30:53So the nerves that are bubbling along at this stage of this race
00:30:59keep them going.
00:31:00They're going to go for another couple of weeks.
00:31:02No doubt, Matt. I can't wait for it.
00:31:04We've seen some dramatic racing at Sydney
00:31:08but right now, this restart,
00:31:11normally the tricks between teammates are known.
00:31:15You know that in the truck when you talk about a restart
00:31:18and what you might do in terms of the technique,
00:31:21all that chat is pretty much closed shop.
00:31:23So when you try to do that to your competitor,
00:31:26it's all fine if you've got Mark Winterbottom
00:31:28or Will Davison or Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:31:30But when your teammates are like this,
00:31:32this will be an interesting restart
00:31:33because you don't get the same freebie.
00:31:35You don't get the little jump or the little kick that you might get.
00:31:38So Craig's got to make sure at this restart
00:31:41that he's right behind Wynn Cup.
00:31:45And don't be fooled by the fact
00:31:47that they're wearing the same colour overalls
00:31:49because they both want to win.
00:31:54Wynn Cup gets away on a fly.
00:31:56He's done the job well.
00:31:59But Lowndes got a great run.
00:32:01So the first part of the restart was very good for Wynn Cup
00:32:03but the second part through the corner itself
00:32:05was very good for Lowndes.
00:32:10It needed to be because Van Gisbergen went with him
00:32:12and was threatening.
00:32:15Cold tyres.
00:32:16I noticed both the Red Bull drivers worked really hard in that gap
00:32:20to make sure that they tried to keep brake temperature
00:32:22and tyre pressure up.
00:32:24And that's Tony Delberto in the high-flex hole.
00:32:27Probably that car slowed right down.
00:32:28I imagine for someone to inspect it as it went by.
00:32:31So he must be concerned he needed a visual on it.
00:32:35Mostert's very close to the back of Van Gisbergen.
00:32:39There's Mark Winterbottom, car 5,
00:32:41just in front of Jason Brighton.
00:32:42He's recovered a couple of spots.
00:32:44Remember he started on the front row.
00:32:45He went back to 10th and that was Davison off-wide.
00:32:48Tander and Davison getting together again.
00:32:53Scott Pyke, car number 8.
00:32:54He's in 12th place in the red car.
00:32:56Here's Lowndes, right on the back of his team-mate,
00:32:58through Hayshed.
00:32:59This is where Lowndes had the big wobble several laps ago.
00:33:02Much more stability through there this time.
00:33:05Sometimes the tyres can recover a little bit after a rest.
00:33:08He's on him.
00:33:09He's going to have a run.
00:33:10He'll have a look.
00:33:11He had momentum but had to get out of it on the grey.
00:33:13So Lowndes is hungry.
00:33:15This is great.
00:33:16And look at Wincup's car sliding.
00:33:22Look at the intensity on their faces.
00:33:24I spoke to all three before the race meeting started
00:33:27and that's what Larco mentioned before about the chat
00:33:29with the engineers.
00:33:31Interesting in these moments of tension.
00:33:35He's got the run.
00:33:37He's painting to the left and then he'll duck to the right
00:33:40if he can get the draft to work for him
00:33:42but that means it's a much tighter corner.
00:33:44And look at these two.
00:33:45Van Gisbergen and Mostert.
00:33:47And if Chas can get up on the outside,
00:33:49that gives him the ideal line for the left-hander at two.
00:33:52Couldn't get it done but it was a brave try.
00:33:55He's run wide.
00:33:56Van Gisbergen a little bit.
00:33:57He got back on line for the second apex of Turn 2.
00:33:59Lowndes has got Wincup out of the comfort zone at the moment
00:34:02so his car looks better on the restart,
00:34:04right off the road from inside the top ten.
00:34:07Here's Lowndes again, second, looking up the inside at four.
00:34:10Got him.
00:34:11Wincup's got to give space.
00:34:12I said he was out of the comfort zone with that car.
00:34:15He decided he didn't want to have to drive it ragged.
00:34:17He's let him go.
00:34:18Do you reckon he wants to win this championship?
00:34:20That's one of his best drives.
00:34:22To come from where he was,
00:34:23have the drama at the start of the race.
00:34:25He has come forward.
00:34:26That's an excellent manoeuvre,
00:34:28an absolutely determined professional effort
00:34:31by Craig Lowndes here today.
00:34:33And determination has been the key word for Lowndes.
00:34:3814 years since he won his last V8 supercar title.
00:34:41We know he's been racking up Bathurst victories in between,
00:34:45but now this championship is so close to him
00:34:49and he will not let it shake.
00:34:52So he puts a move on his team-mate,
00:34:54takes the lead of the race with six laps to go,
00:34:59going for maximum points.
00:35:02And he's won more races than any other active driver at this circuit.
00:35:06He's won eight races here,
00:35:08and he's got a lock on this one again.
00:35:10There's wisdom in that manoeuvre, though, for me, with Wincup.
00:35:14If you're sliding all over the place,
00:35:16you're more likely to bowl a wide and grab a donut off the back of it.
00:35:19Zero points or back in the pack
00:35:21because you had to wobble back onto the racetrack.
00:35:23Much better to just take the pressure off for a moment.
00:35:26He may even find some recovery towards the back end of this,
00:35:28but I think strategically quite a smart play by Wincup there.
00:35:32I agree.
00:35:33He knew when Lowndes fired down there,
00:35:35he knew what was on.
00:35:36He could have turned in.
00:35:37He didn't.
00:35:38He held the car wide.
00:35:39He let Lowndes get by.
00:35:40He knows now that he's got to just go and do a really good job
00:35:43for the last part of this race, run second in this race,
00:35:46tweak the car for the next race.
00:35:49And I've been really impressed with the level of determination
00:35:51after Lowndes lost four spots in that early manoeuvre with Mostert.
00:35:55He's come back.
00:35:56Obviously the safety car helped him enormously
00:35:58in terms of getting that gap back,
00:36:00which was at that stage a winning gap for Wincup
00:36:04prior to the safety car.
00:36:06He's shown a lot of consistent poise in this regard
00:36:09when you consider a championship win for Wincup in 08, 09, 11 and 12.
00:36:14He missed out to Courtney in 2010.
00:36:17So he puts it together in increments.
00:36:19So it's an interesting thing to watch him do his job.
00:36:22Beats the elephant one bite at a time.
00:36:27The interesting thing about the way this guy goes at Phillip Island,
00:36:30that just made reference to his performance at Phillip Island.
00:36:33Watch his technique.
00:36:34The reason that Lowndes goes so well at Phillip Island
00:36:37is not only because he's fast,
00:36:39it's because he looks after the tyres.
00:36:41I said before, this is the hardest place in Australia on tyres.
00:36:44The technique that he uses, the technique, just watch this technique.
00:36:48He turns it in early, brakes the car, turns it to the apex,
00:36:51runs it in on the front wheel
00:36:53and puts more load on the front of the car
00:36:56than on the rear of the car.
00:36:58So when he does that, he achieves the speed
00:37:00by coaxing the car to the corner,
00:37:02keeping the mid-corner speed up
00:37:04and then having to accelerate the car less at the end of the corner.
00:37:08So the momentum and the technique is what makes him so good here.
00:37:12The interesting thing is that you remember
00:37:14he had to fight Mostert and van Gisberg
00:37:17and he had to use the car much harder than the leading group,
00:37:20especially Wincup, who did the first 15-odd laps by himself.
00:37:25Yeah, that's a very good point, Matt.
00:37:27He did use the tyres and the car hard to make that position up
00:37:31and, as I said before, the safety car,
00:37:34he had a lot of work to do to get to Wincup.
00:37:36He's hustling it, isn't he?
00:37:38On that few shift there, second to third,
00:37:40he actually lifted up in the rear
00:37:41because it was sitting on the kerb at the time.
00:37:43And when you do that, you're hurting the tyre a little bit
00:37:46and he's pushing it very hard over the top of the hill.
00:37:48That hurts the front right tyre,
00:37:50which is the working side of the car around here.
00:37:53And his sector splits are impressive, so are Wincup's.
00:37:55They're getting on with it here at the moment.
00:37:57Last lap for Lowndes was that quick one.
00:37:59One minute 32.6.
00:38:01The race is well and truly old now.
00:38:04They're on their 20th lap.
00:38:05If I was Rowland, I'd be saying to both of them at the moment,
00:38:08back it off.
00:38:09You're going to win this race.
00:38:10You've got a big gap.
00:38:11It's got two and a half seconds to van Gisberg and in third.
00:38:14Particularly as we know there's some tyre stress out there
00:38:17in the universe on this racetrack.
00:38:18There always has been.
00:38:20So 32.5.
00:38:21Fastest lap of the race, Wincup.
00:38:23So he's recovered slightly and lost it again.
00:38:25Looks down the inside at one and then runs wide
00:38:29because of the trajectory into that corner.
00:38:31So it was only a tenth of a second difference
00:38:33between Lowndes and Wincup on that last lap.
00:38:35It's officially three quarters of a second.
00:38:37And here's a move by Will Davison down the inside
00:38:40on David Reynolds.
00:38:43David gave him room there.
00:38:44Yeah, pretty easy move at turn 10.
00:38:51Winterbottom's a little closer now to the back of these guys,
00:38:54to the back of Alex Davison and Fabian Coulthard.
00:38:58Just a reminder again that that little bit of desperation
00:39:00you saw from Lowndes has just rejiggled those provisional points.
00:39:04That was an eight-point gain for Lowndes to pull that move off
00:39:08the difference between points first and second.
00:39:13There's the gap.
00:39:14Three quarters of a second on the last measure.
00:39:17And Van Gisbergen in third is 3.2 seconds behind the leader.
00:39:21So these two have pretty much checked out.
00:39:23As Mark said a moment ago,
00:39:24I'm not sure about the wisdom of them absolutely driving
00:39:27qualifying laps at the moment.
00:39:29They're doing their fastest laps in the race on lap 21.
00:39:32Both of them, power triple eight and one.
00:39:35So absolutely no let-up on the pressure there
00:39:38or here for third spot between Van Gisbergen and Mostyn.
00:39:42Your point there was a really good one because that pass
00:39:46was a very good pass by Lowndes.
00:39:48We'll see how much that was worth.
00:39:50But it's eight points up, but it's also eight points back.
00:39:52So it's a 16-point differential.
00:39:54So the real thing for the championship,
00:39:55it's a 16-point win there, that manoeuvre.
00:40:00I reckon you guys alluded to it earlier when you wondered
00:40:02why they're doing qualifying laps.
00:40:03They've both looked in their mirrors.
00:40:04Jamie's now had to turn and see these two young blokes behind him.
00:40:07Interesting little dynamic amongst these two is Alex Davidson
00:40:10ahead of Mark Winterbottom.
00:40:11And you know, they may not be the best of friends,
00:40:13and I'm sure the team would like Mark Winterbottom
00:40:15to be in front of him.
00:40:16But Alex Davidson having a great weekend,
00:40:17and he won't be looking to give up a thing.
00:40:19So let's see what plays out there.
00:40:21That's right.
00:40:22And those of you that follow us all the time may recall
00:40:25quite an awkward moment between those fellows at Pupukau
00:40:28in New Zealand.
00:40:29Last lap, by the way, for Lowndes was a one-minute 32.
00:40:32So that's a bit of a shame.
00:40:35Last lap, by the way, for Lowndes was a one-minute 32.4,
00:40:38a tenth quicker than Wincup and the fastest lap of the race.
00:40:41So it continues.
00:40:42So that's three laps in a row where they've got this big arm wrestle going.
00:40:45Peak speed, faster than anybody else in the field by a margin.
00:40:49It's out to nearly one second now, Lowndes to Wincup,
00:40:52and the gap back to third-place van Isbergen is 4.2 seconds.
00:40:56So they're actually stretching from leader to third.
00:40:59That margin is opening, and Mostert is not letting go.
00:41:04Yeah, Neil, you were just seeing the praises of Craig Lowndes on tyres.
00:41:07I had a chat to Kirk Fitzsimmons, who's the Dunlop tyre manager here,
00:41:10and he was just saying the same thing across the season.
00:41:13It's Jamie Wincup and Craig Lowndes who are the best on tyres
00:41:16throughout the year.
00:41:17He said the difference in this race, you could hear the instructions
00:41:19for Jamie early on to get out and get on with it.
00:41:21So his tyre's not so good now, whereas Craig was back in the field,
00:41:24conserved a bit of rubber, and now he's getting the advantage.
00:41:28Interesting watching those on-board pictures.
00:41:30Thanks, Baret of Mostert, who turns in very early.
00:41:33He does it at turn 12, and he does it at 1.
00:41:35It looks encouraging, and it looks like it works for you,
00:41:38but when you turn in early, it makes you slow on the exit
00:41:40to the shape of the corner.
00:41:42He's really being hurt by that at the moment,
00:41:44and if he got to drive each car to be fully up to speed
00:41:48on its behavioural traits, he might be needing to do that
00:41:51to get the most out of it.
00:41:52But typically, if you can work on your exits
00:41:54when the guy you're racing is struggling,
00:41:57that's how you'll actually end up making the pass.
00:41:59Exactly.
00:42:00He's repeating some of those manoeuvres
00:42:02which are actually hurting him a little bit.
00:42:04He's running down the outside at turn 4.
00:42:06What you said before was exactly right.
00:42:08You've got to work out where your positives are,
00:42:10where are the good parts about your car,
00:42:12stay off them enough so that it doesn't have too much aero effect,
00:42:15and go and have a lunge, which is really what you saw Lownes do
00:42:18with the performance at turn 4.
00:42:21This will be Craig Lownes' ninth win at this circuit,
00:42:24equals Hugh Scafie for the most wins at Phillip Island.
00:42:31It'll be his fifth race win of 2013,
00:42:35but in terms of the championship
00:42:37and the way that he had to fight back after a bit of mess at the start,
00:42:42this could well be the most important victory
00:42:45for Craig Lownes this season.
00:42:48And it'll be a 1-2 for Red Bull Racing Australia.
00:42:51Well done.
00:42:54Win cup second, but he holds on to the championship lead.
00:42:57Only just.
00:42:58Van Gisbergen on the podium.
00:43:00What a drive from Chas Mostyn.
00:43:02Fabian Coulthard from pole to fifth.
00:43:07Alex Davison and Mark Winterbottom finishes in seventh.
00:43:13And doesn't that set the scene for this afternoon's second race
00:43:19when Winterbottom and Lownes will be on the front row of the grid
00:43:22and win cup will start from fifth.
00:43:25What was interesting there in the last lap and a half, two laps,
00:43:29that battle from Van Gisbergen all the way really to Will Davison,
00:43:33which was third to eighth, really tightened up.
00:43:36Yes.
00:43:37So those cars went across the line only separated by a couple of seconds.
00:43:42So very good job in there at Techno Autosports,
00:43:45VIP Pit Foods backing for those guys
00:43:48and a great pace for Van Gisbergen on the podium.
00:43:51He's been showing some great pace lately.
00:43:54He was right in the thick of it yesterday.
00:44:01He's been going through some more of those numbers on the Lownes,
00:44:05the Phillip Island CV.
00:44:07It's just an extraordinary history that he's had here.
00:44:11He's now done 33 races, 25 times in the top ten.
00:44:16He has a 75% strike rate in the top ten
00:44:20and more than 60% strike rate on the podium,
00:44:23and now nine race wins here.
00:44:25What I always find hard to measure with him
00:44:27is you saw how aggressively he was driving,
00:44:30bagging up in second gear, smashing it into third, sliding the car,
00:44:33but the numbers are still there.
00:44:35That's right.
00:44:36That technique, it keeps the mid-corner speed up.
00:44:39The great thing about him is, just like Brock,
00:44:42he's got great car control and big, fast, open corners.
00:44:46When the car's on the slide, he keeps the momentum up
00:44:49and he's able to do it lap after lap after lap,
00:44:52so great performance.
00:44:54How's that point scenario you just saw there a moment ago?
00:44:56Just six points.
00:44:58It's tight at the top.
00:45:00And remember, Lownes came into this six points ahead of Jamie.
00:45:04So the tables have turned just a bit.
00:45:07It's like the stock exchange, that championship leaderboard.
00:45:10Frosty's not going to be thrilled, is he?
00:45:12From heading down to the first corner,
00:45:14looking like he could sort of be in the battle.
00:45:16He just couldn't throw a punch in that one.
00:45:18Ended up seventh.
00:45:20Wasn't really much he could do about it.
00:45:22Don't forget, we've got a special one-on-one interview
00:45:25with Red Bull boss Roland Dayne coming up.
00:45:29Also got touring car masters.
00:45:31That'll be fantastic out here.
00:45:33Jeremy Moore and Lownes.
00:45:36And the car 888 team celebrate.
00:45:40The smiling assassin is back in business.
00:45:50Really good respect there, Matt.
00:45:52You walk up, shake hands, teammates,
00:45:54both trying to win this championship.
00:45:56Doesn't get any better than that.
00:45:58One of the great racetracks, one of the great battles
00:46:00with two of the very best drivers we've ever seen.
00:46:05Craig Lownes, boy, only one way to describe that race for you,
00:46:09that was dogged determination.
00:46:10You wanted that, and you wanted it badly.
00:46:12Yeah, I think so.
00:46:13Like I said, you need to do something special.
00:46:16I was very lucky, though, with that safety car.
00:46:18It obviously brought Jamie back to us.
00:46:20Otherwise, we were probably considering running second.
00:46:23Of course, you never know what these races are like.
00:46:26Congratulations to all the guys at Red Bull,
00:46:28because we've had a bit of a funny morning,
00:46:30but it's all turned out now.
00:46:31Do you know what the gap in the championship is?
00:46:33No, I have no idea.
00:46:34You're second by six points.
00:46:35Oh, wow, six points.
00:46:37You know, obviously, the next race,
00:46:38we've got a much better start.
00:46:40Hopefully, we can capitalise on that,
00:46:41but I know he's going to be pretty tough.
00:46:43But just to say hello to Levi and Chillie at home.
00:46:45Hopefully, bring on round two.
00:46:46Great work.
00:46:47Well done, Lownes.
00:46:48Congratulations.
00:46:49Jamie Wyncutt, once again, another great team result.
00:46:51You're still leading the championship
00:46:52to six points in it at the moment.
00:46:53This is on.
00:46:54Yeah, really happy with my start.
00:46:56That gave us a good opportunity for that race,
00:46:58but I didn't have enough pace.
00:47:00Craig's thing was lit, and he was driving it really well as well.
00:47:03So we were good for second,
00:47:05so I'm glad to maximise our position.
00:47:07Is that the best run ever into the first turn at Phillip Island?
00:47:10Four abreast at the start?
00:47:12It was a little hairy.
00:47:13I would have rather been on the inside than the outside,
00:47:15but it didn't really break.
00:47:17Just had a big go down the outside.
00:47:19You've got to take those risks, you know,
00:47:21late in the year to try to get right up there.
00:47:23So it paid off.
00:47:24It won't always pay off, but it did today, which is good.
00:47:26Hey, Jamie, you're making this championship so exciting.
00:47:28Well done.
00:47:29It's fantastic.
00:47:30Congratulations.
00:47:31I'm not trying to, but that's the way it is.
00:47:33Well done.
00:47:34Well done.

00:57:52And welcome to Friday Night Live.
00:57:55Yes, it's Friday night.
00:57:58We catch up with the drivers and team owners off the track
00:58:01and take you behind the scenes of pit lane after hours.
00:58:06This guy's gone crazy.
00:58:09Don't miss the chance to relive the greatest moments
00:58:12that have shaped another incredible year in V8 Supercars.
00:58:21Friday Night Live kicks off at 6.30pm Eastern
00:58:24on the 6th of December live from Sydney Olympic Park on 7 Mate.
00:58:29There on Saturday evening see the V8 Supercars
00:58:32tackle the first 250km of the weekend
00:58:36in a spectacular twilight race live on 7.
00:58:48So that's how they finish race 33 with race 34,
00:58:51another 100km still to come.
00:58:53Jamie Wink up on the podium with his teammate Craig Lowndes.
00:58:57That's the 10th time this season that both of the Red Bull Racing Australia
00:59:01drivers have been on the podium at the same time.
00:59:04You can imagine for any boss of a multi-car team,
00:59:06it's a real fine line managing teammates to let them go out racing
00:59:10but understand that there's a team perspective as well.
00:59:13So imagine trying to do that when you've got two of the best drivers
00:59:16the sport has ever seen who are one and two in the championship.
00:59:20So how does Roland Dayne do it?
00:59:22And what does he really think about the opposition
00:59:25at Ford Performance Racing this year?
00:59:27Well, let's find out.
00:59:28Neil Crompton sat down with the Red Bull team boss.
00:59:35CHEERING
00:59:40Roland, we find ourselves in a fascinating scenario now
00:59:43because there's not only an inter-team battle,
00:59:46there's something of an intra-team battle which you have to manage.
00:59:49How are you going to do that?
00:59:51I'm going to follow the same process that we have all the years
00:59:59Jamie and Craig have been together,
01:00:01which is to try and allow them as much freedom to race each other as possible
01:00:07but with the proviso that they don't hit each other
01:00:12and they also don't take their eyes off the fact
01:00:14that we've got other blokes in our mirror.
01:00:17He's going to be a real pest here down the inside
01:00:19and he's actually grabbed the spot.
01:00:20They're locked together. They'll go off the road.
01:00:22They're off the road. Lowndes is in the weeds.
01:00:25You know, they're both racers and if you're not a racer
01:00:28then you shouldn't be here.
01:00:30They've got to race as hard as they can
01:00:32but they've also got to remember it's a team sport
01:00:34so we have a reminder about it
01:00:37but I'm not going to ram it down their throats
01:00:39because they both know full well what the rules are
01:00:42and they've been a part of it
01:00:44and they've been a part of the success that that has given us over the years
01:00:48because they've been able to work together.
01:00:50Are you seeing any different behaviour from either of the drivers
01:00:53that have done it before, particularly in Jamie's case?
01:00:56For Craig, it's a long time since he's been in a position to win a championship.
01:00:59I think they're both pretty focused.
01:01:01They're both pretty fit.
01:01:03Craig's in a, I think he's in a pretty good state of mind
01:01:07compared to some of the other years anyway in himself
01:01:10which is good to see.
01:01:12You know, he seems to be enjoying life in general
01:01:16and Jamie always just gets incredibly focused
01:01:20and so they've both got completely different approaches
01:01:25to how they go about this
01:01:27and when they're operating at full tempo
01:01:30it's a pleasure to watch.
01:01:32How would you rate your championship season so far
01:01:35across both cars out of ten?
01:01:37Probably so far about seven.
01:01:40I mean, we failed to win Bathurst
01:01:44which hurts always to do that
01:01:47especially when we were second and third
01:01:49you know, we should have won it
01:01:51and that irks and we had a little bit of an off patch
01:01:56during the season.
01:01:58So it's been up and down.
01:02:00Tell us what your thoughts are about Mark Winterbottom
01:02:02and Will Davison as drivers.
01:02:04Look, I think Mark is, he's extremely fast.
01:02:10I don't think he manages himself out of the car particularly well
01:02:15but I'm a huge respecter of what he does in the car
01:02:19and his ability to drive very well under pressure now
01:02:25which, yeah, he's matured a lot in the years.
01:02:29Will, I always feel, is a little bit delicate.
01:02:34He's a great driver, very quick
01:02:36but I think he needs looking after more
01:02:41as a driver than some of the other ones
01:02:44but that's the nature of it, you know.
01:02:46All drivers are a little bit different
01:02:48and you have to try and manage those people appropriately
01:02:52and it's often not the drivers who have to lead that
01:02:56it's the team that have to understand
01:02:59who and what they're working with.
01:03:01So all four of these guys are different.
01:03:04They're all different in their approach.
01:03:07They're all very quick.
01:03:09You can say that Jamie's a great qualifier.
01:03:12Craig's a great racer.
01:03:14I think Winterbottom has shown he can be both.
01:03:18Will can be a little bit more up and down
01:03:21but if they're all the same, wouldn't it be boring?
01:03:28Very, very well said, Roland Dane.
01:03:30Now, Crompton, you did that interview with the Red Bull boss
01:03:32and so much focus goes on the drivers in this sport for good reason
01:03:35but when you listen to Roland Dane, you realise that in his position
01:03:38and so many others down here in pit lane, you've got to be part boss.
01:03:41You've got to be part mentor, part mate, part counsellor, part Dr Phil.
01:03:44It's a hell of an insight, isn't it?
01:03:46Yeah, coaching's a very big part of it
01:03:48and you probably end up, in many respects, not focusing enough on that.
01:03:51It was an interesting chat.
01:03:53The intention was to speak to Roland for a couple of minutes
01:03:55and grab a couple of little things and bolt out the door
01:03:57but I ended up sitting down to talk for 15 or 20 minutes about life, the universe.
01:04:01Remember that he had to step back into the role
01:04:03between the two engineers mid-year when Adrian Burgess left the team
01:04:06to go to the Holden Racing Team next year.
01:04:08I found it very interesting and it was curious to ask him
01:04:10not only about his own guys but about the boys up at Ford Performance Racing as well.
01:04:14He's ultra competitive and we've, of course, seen that even today
01:04:17with the ongoing battle with the stewards and so on.
01:04:19This is a big thing for him too.
01:04:20And what do you reckon his take on the FPR guys?
01:04:22I thought it was pretty much spot on.
01:04:24There's obviously respect and growing respect, I'd say, for Mark Winterbottom.
01:04:27He also knows that Will Davison's been in a tough position
01:04:29so it's a pretty good read for somebody whose team he's not a part of.
01:04:33I mean, he knows that they're very good operators
01:04:35and a little bit of that is gamesmanship.
01:04:37He wants them to watch that story when they get home
01:04:39and give them a little bit along the way.
01:04:41That's all part of what puts together a result in this business
01:04:43and creates its own pressure but he enormously respects what they do.
01:04:46You have to. They're doing a great job.
01:04:47It's a terrific competition at the moment.
01:04:49Yeah, and speaking of those at home, we know that James Courtney and Alex Prema
01:04:52shot off back home.
01:04:53You'll be watching.
01:04:54A shout-out to you.
01:04:55Hope you're feeling OK, guys, because it was one of the biggest crashes, I reckon,
01:04:58that we've seen in a long, long time yesterday.
01:05:00Coming up after the break, we're going to analyse that crash
01:05:02between car 34 and car 22
01:05:05and just see how the safety features of these next-generation cars work
01:05:09as we build up to our next race, the Touring Car Masters,
01:05:12and, of course, race 34 of the series,
01:05:14the next 100 Ks of the Phillip Island 360.
01:05:16Stay with us.
01:05:18MUSIC
01:05:41Well, this category, this circuit, has seen some nasty crashes over the years
01:05:46and this was certainly right up there.
01:05:48Terrible incident yesterday during the race
01:05:50where James Courtney just couldn't see Alex Prema coming.
01:05:53This is on board Todd Kelly, his Tiger Car Vision.
01:05:55Look at that. Out of nowhere.
01:05:57Almost 1.5 tonne of V8 supercar flying in the air
01:06:01into the driver's side of James Courtney.
01:06:05Now, thankfully, James and Alex OK, but you just saw there.
01:06:08We're going to ask you the question,
01:06:09is that the biggest crash you've ever seen at Phillip Island?
01:06:12We've had some big ones here.
01:06:13I remember Jason Barguana back in 2002 off the start line.
01:06:16Cam McConville going straight through down at Turn 1.
01:06:19So we'll get your thoughts on that.
01:06:20Go to our V8 Supercars website or use the Seven Sport app.
01:06:24But a lot of people say, well, how can you survive a crash like that?
01:06:27These cars are built for safety.
01:06:29These next-generation cars that we're currently using
01:06:31are certainly a step up on the safety barrier as well.
01:06:35And let's get more on that with Larko.
01:06:37Yeah, they certainly are, Matty.
01:06:38But just let's rewind to that accident for a sec.
01:06:40So where he left the circuit, Alexander Prema, that is,
01:06:42about 220 where he went off.
01:06:44And when you hit the grass,
01:06:45they're very hard to retard the speed of the car.
01:06:47So the point of impact where the rear of his car went up there
01:06:50and hit this area of James Courtney's car,
01:06:52and by the way, this is Garth Tander's car,
01:06:54the sister car, was about 90km an hour.
01:06:56So nearly your speed limit on your roads
01:06:58when it made impact at that point.
01:07:00So that's as big a hit as you're going to get
01:07:02in a side impact in one of these cars.
01:07:04Now, how do we survive them?
01:07:06OK, so this is the new generation of cars.
01:07:08For those that watch the show,
01:07:09you might remember a couple of years ago on V8 Extra,
01:07:11I'm actually a member of a facility called AIMS,
01:07:14Australian Institute of Motorsport Safety.
01:07:16We got a V8 supercar that went overseas with the FIA Institute.
01:07:20And remember, we rammed it into a wall
01:07:22and they got the forces from that on the wall,
01:07:25imprinted on the wall, turned those forces into a sled
01:07:28so they could run it into the sides of these cars
01:07:31to develop what we see here now, the side intrusion protection.
01:07:34So this is the safety cage.
01:07:35It's chromoly tube, right?
01:07:37But the really critical thing here
01:07:39is where the driver sits in relation to this.
01:07:41So as you can see, and this is a V8 supercar specific idea,
01:07:44done a few years ago, great innovation.
01:07:46By moving the cars inboard,
01:07:48and they've had to cut into the tunnel here,
01:07:50we've got this nice big gap.
01:07:51Now, if you look at these photos,
01:07:53I just want to put these photos up
01:07:54of James Courtney's car from yesterday,
01:07:56you can see where the door gusseting or the door cage broke,
01:08:00which that's fine, it was a big impact.
01:08:02You can expect to see some breakage.
01:08:04But by having that seat so far inboard protected James.
01:08:08So that in itself has been a great innovation.
01:08:11And looking inside this car,
01:08:12you can see a couple of other things.
01:08:13Seat development.
01:08:14Now remember, V8 supercars use an FIA standard specification sheet
01:08:18or a very, very high specification seat, that is,
01:08:20that's mandated in our category.
01:08:22So you have to have certain specifications here.
01:08:24And you see they're very deep,
01:08:25so there's good lateral protection here.
01:08:27There's great lateral head protection here.
01:08:30You see the driver's wearing the hands device.
01:08:32We talk about that a lot.
01:08:33That doesn't do anything in a side impact.
01:08:35They're really relying on this sort of stuff here.
01:08:37Again, this is all chromoly tube we've got here,
01:08:40and it's welded with TIG welding.
01:08:42So it's a superior welding.
01:08:43We've got the gusseting here.
01:08:44Now, importantly, that thing there you can see
01:08:47is a carbon fibre covered aluminium honeycomb.
01:08:50So it's a composite.
01:08:51And when you make a composite, it is extremely strong.
01:08:55So that up against the door bars with the distance.
01:08:58The other thing here,
01:08:59in here you can see that aluminium seat mount,
01:09:01very, very thick.
01:09:02Again, that's specified and it's bolted down to the chassis.
01:09:06So all that is very, very strong, and that's what saved him.
01:09:09The other thing inside the door here we have
01:09:11is another one of these aluminium honeycombs inside the door
01:09:15to try and protect in that regard.
01:09:17Now, Pete, I don't know if you can just come around this side.
01:09:20What's really quite unique in amongst all of this
01:09:23is all of these incidents and a lot of the design
01:09:28is around the structural integrity of the car in this area.
01:09:31As you can see, the driver's back in there.
01:09:33He's back in behind this T-pillar, which is great news.
01:09:35That car hit up in this region.
01:09:39So I think well done, new generation of V8 supercar.
01:09:42Now, what I'm really keen to hear about, Rihanna,
01:09:44who happens to be a registered nurse, by the way,
01:09:46has done a little bit of homework and got an update on the boys,
01:09:49which we're really keen to hear about.
01:09:51Yeah, because obviously safety of the drivers is paramount in V8 supercars.
01:09:54We have a medical delegate that goes to all of our V8 supercar races.
01:09:57That's Dr Carl Lee.
01:09:58I had a quick chat to him this morning.
01:10:00He obviously was there on the scene,
01:10:02attended to the guys in the medical centre
01:10:04and obviously follows up before any further investigations happen.
01:10:07Alex and James have both gone home.
01:10:09Firstly, Alex, headache, soreness across the shoulders,
01:10:13obviously from the seatbelts and the impact itself,
01:10:16and had a sore left knee and some bruising to his left knee,
01:10:19obviously from where the gear lever has hit his leg through the impact.
01:10:23Apart from that, pretty good.
01:10:25A few anti-inflammatories and some rest for him.
01:10:27James Courtney, on the other hand,
01:10:29we saw he didn't have any time to make any brace position.
01:10:31He didn't have any time to react.
01:10:33He's copped it at full force.
01:10:35Obviously, again, headaches and soreness across the shoulders.
01:10:38He also had two wounds on his right thigh.
01:10:41Now, that's from the intrusion bars that you were just talking about.
01:10:44They actually penetrated and into his right thigh.
01:10:47Not too serious, but certainly deep bruising to the muscle.
01:10:51He's also... The biggest concern for him is his right knee.
01:10:54They're concerned about the lateral collateral ligament,
01:10:57is what it's called, on the side of the knee that runs along here.
01:11:00Now, there's two ligaments either side. It's pretty basic sort of stuff.
01:11:03And when you get that impact coming from that lateral side
01:11:06is when you're sort of stretching that ligament,
01:11:08which is not what you want to do.
01:11:10So they're going to go for an MRI later on this week
01:11:12just to clear out whether he's done any further significant damage
01:11:15aside from the muscle soreness and the bruising.
01:11:17So there you go. I actually think it's a really positive story,
01:11:20not a bad one at all.
01:11:21I mean, to have that sort of impact, that level, that sort of G,
01:11:24pretty good outcome.
01:11:26Yeah, good explanation too, guys. Thanks for that.
01:11:28Of course, Mark Scaife had so much to do with the evolution
01:11:31of these new generation cars.
01:11:33And I reckon Rihanna just touched on one thing
01:11:35about James not having any time at all to brace
01:11:38because he just didn't know it was coming, couldn't see it coming.
01:11:40As a driver, you know that you're going to be in crashes throughout your career.
01:11:43Is that your biggest fear, though, the ones that you don't know are about to happen?
01:11:47Exactly. And there's not many places in Australian motorsport
01:11:49where you're turning into the right when the car is off the road
01:11:53and can't do anything about it.
01:11:54So Alex Prema, the thing we haven't explained very well so far
01:11:56is Alex Prema could do nothing about that.
01:11:58He was in the grass at 200 kilometres an hour
01:12:01and knew that he was going to make contact with one of those cars.
01:12:04James Courtney just ended up being the car.
01:12:06The biggest thing about this, too, Matt, is that 10 years ago,
01:12:09you wouldn't have survived that shunt.
01:12:11That is a massive crash.
01:12:13And the new generation cars, all the work the guys have done
01:12:16in terms of the design of these prototypes and eventually the build,
01:12:20that is just extraordinary vision.
01:12:22And it is, as you have a look at this,
01:12:25unbelievable.
01:12:26Is that the biggest you've ever seen here?
01:12:27I mean, we've had some doozies here.
01:12:29That is the biggest crash I've ever seen.
01:12:31That is a massive crash.
01:12:32And again, James would have been a spectator.
01:12:34He knew nothing about what was going to unfold.
01:12:36And Alex was a passenger, too.
01:12:38So it all came together in the perfect storm, if you like, for a crash.
01:12:41Unfortunately, that's how it ended their day and their weekend.
01:12:44But fortunately, the guys are OK and we keep sending our best wishes to you.
01:12:47You can let us know what you think about that.
01:12:49Just a little side play on that one.
01:12:50If you think it's the biggest one that we've had here,
01:12:52hopefully we don't have any more.
01:12:53A lot more racing coming your way.
01:12:55We'll take a break from the Sergeant Security Phillip Island 360.
01:13:10Craig Lowndes drives into the history books.
01:13:13Here comes the defending champ again.
01:13:16Mark Winterbottom goes marching towards his first race victory of the year.
01:13:23A wonderful reception for Will Davison.
01:13:25And the Ford flags are flying high here at Townsville.
01:13:29Jamie Winker and Paul D'Umbrell celebrate with a big win in the Standout 500.
01:13:35He's on the white line.
01:13:36He's going to drop a spot here.
01:13:38They're side by side.
01:13:39Hold your breath, Australia.
01:13:41And Winterbottom hangs on.
01:13:44Lowndes and Luff survive to win the Arbor Oil Gold Coast 600.
01:13:48And that has changed the championship completely.
01:13:51I'm doing 500, I'm out of control.
