00:00Welcome to our coverage on 7Sport and all of our viewers around the world, the Plus Fitness
00:06Phillip Island 400 qualifying for race number 33 is about to get underway. 25 cars will roll out
00:13of the pit lane momentarily and this is a short sharp blast for Quali. We'll determine a pole
00:19position. The armour all pole battle has been fantastic this year and it's poised in an
00:23interesting situation at the moment where both Scott McLachlan from Valvoline Volvo and Jamie
00:28Wincup, Red Bull Holden, eight apiece in that little battle. Let's get into that pit lane
00:34where it's a very busy and colourful scene and it is a very good afternoon and welcome Mark
00:38Beretta. Hey thanks Neil, great to be back in the lane too because this is what we really
00:41love about it, the action and the build up and there is so much focus on this man, Jamie
00:46Wincup. I know you've spoken about him already today but the pressure on him is enormous.
00:51A few moments ago he was sitting in the car and surrounded by photographers. Everyone wants
00:55to capture that moment, to capture that spirit and that feeling of Jamie Wincup potentially
01:00wrapping up the championship today. It's a big ask. The focus of the team and I'm talking about
01:05the entire team, both cars, is all on getting Jamie Wincup that championship today. They want to leave
01:11today and have it done and then focus on bringing Craig Lowndes up through the standings once again.
01:16So all eyes today will be on Jamie Wincup. It's going to make for a great day's racing.
01:20As you said Berets, lots of focus on Jamie Wincup but there's so many other variables that can play out
01:25this weekend. Mark Winterbottom, he is not going to go down without a fight. He was on pole position
01:30here last year. He's gone a whole 12 months since his last pole position. As you said,
01:35Craig Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen, they're vying for that second place in the championship.
01:39We know how fast this racetrack is. An incident can knock you out, not only for the day but for
01:45the entire weekend. Think back to 2012. Jamie Wincup v. Will Davison had that huge incident.
01:51And then look up to the skies. Grey clouds everywhere. Is it going to rain today?
01:56So many things can impact Jamie Wincup's championship fight.
02:01Wonderful view there of the cars departing the lane and heading through turn one. This
02:04is our entry list for our weekend of activity here. Two races today, 200 kilometres tomorrow.
02:10All the focus and the talk has been about Jamie Wincup. But as I said earlier, there are 24 other
02:15drivers highly determined to make sure that they ruin that party as best they can.
02:19They want to take this thing to Sydney in a couple of weeks for the wrap-up of the NRMA
02:23Sydney 500. Russell Ingle, Scotty McLaughlin. McLaughlin's one of those drivers who's achieved
02:29pole positions. Eight of them so far this year for Armourall. Shane Van Gisbergen, super strong,
02:34particularly in this back half of the championship season. Nick Perkat's name there as well. And
02:39we've got a problem here for Fabian Coulthard's car. Contact. Now he had contact yesterday with
02:44Jack Perkins through the final corner. Something's broken on that car in the front left corner of the
02:48suspension of Fabian Coulthard's car. And there's an announcement in relation to the sponsorship on
02:54that car. Oh, it was huge contact in fact between Fabian and Shane Van Gisbergen. What a bizarre way to
03:01start qualifying. It's broken the upright or the wishbones on Fabian's car and rotated Van Gisbergen.
03:07Well, there's normally a policy where the cars, and it happens in this way, where you're not
03:14supposed to round each other up. Let's just have a look at the track. We'll go back to that incident
03:17in a second. This is the Phillip Island Raceway. It's 4.45 kilometres. It's right down in the southern
03:25corner of Australia. It's always exposed to the elements. Always the wind off the ocean. It's very
03:31fast. 285 kilometres an hour top speed. Just under half the lap is full throttle. It's one of the best
03:38racetracks in this part of the world. Certainly the best racetrack of a permanent facility. They're
03:44the sectors. We'll talk about those. Basically, that turn one sector is so fast. It ends up at turn one
03:51turning into that corner at over 200 kilometres an hour. Look at Brad Jones shaking his head
03:56because you're not supposed to be rounding each other up. There's a protocol between the drivers
04:00on that. Van Gisbergen went by Colt Thun. He was swerving, and they made contact. Have a look at this.
04:07Check out the Gillette replay here. So look up at turn one. Van Gisbergen on the outside. Fabian's
04:12weaving, and just gap vanishes, and contact. Don't see that often on an outlap in qualifying.
04:19That'll excite everybody in both those outfits, particularly the team owner there, Brad Jones,
04:23who runs Lockwood Racing. Rihanna? Brad, you've had a chance to see the replay there. Not happy.
04:28Well, I'm just not happy that the car's damaged. We're in the top five yesterday, and now we're
04:34going to be last. So it looks like it's done more than just taking a tyre off a rim. I'd say it's
04:39probably been an upright, or at best a steering arm. So very unfortunate. Fabian's warming up his
04:45side. Shane was trying to get by. You know, just racing, I guess. Thanks, Brad.
04:49All right. Well, you can see the level of disappointment there from Brad Jones. But most of that disappointment
04:56also comes from what the championship order is. Fabian is currently fifth, and Van Gisbergen
05:01is third. So both cars damaged. Huge damage on the left-hand front on that one, Neil.
05:05And that kills a race tyre. Yeah.
05:07And they've only got 20 of them from this point in the weekend. So they started out
05:11with 24 of the Dunlop hard tyres for this weekend. And again, four of those tyres back
05:17at the end of Friday practice, leaving 20 for the remainder. And one of those has just been
05:21murdered with only about 300 metres on the clock for Fabian Coulthard. It's quite bizarre.
05:29Very unusual set of circumstances. Very low in terms of brake stress on this track.
05:33Very low in terms of bump rating, but very, very high in terms of tyre wear. That was
05:37the reason why I made that remark, Berentz.
05:40Back in the lane, Neil, with Shane Van Gisbergen. Hey, that's unfortunate in qualifying. What
05:44happened?
05:45Yeah, that sucks. We're just on different plans. He was on new tyres to do a run, and I was
05:49on warm-up tyres to just get my car warmed up. I saw him pull to the right. I thought
05:53he was letting me go, but then he's obviously swerved back and not seen me. So I hope they
05:58can fix it, and I hope they can fix his car as well. That sucks for both of us.
06:02Thanks, Shane.
06:03Fabian Coulthard, there's obviously confusing at the start of that qualifying session.
06:07Sorry, Fabian's just getting a radio message from the team, so hopefully we can jump in
06:11in a second.
06:19Fabian, is it okay to chat? So Fabian, just give us your read on that incident.
06:22Oh, look, you know, I was minding my own business, and I was warming my tyres, and next minute
06:27I know Shane's spinning in front of me, so obviously there was contact between me and
06:30him. Yeah, look, it sort of happened all pretty quick, and I really don't have an answer for
06:36it.
06:36Do you have a read on the car, the damage?
06:38You know, I can only see from the vision from driving around the track, and it looks like
06:43it's broken the top arm or something like that. So, you know, we may get it up for this
06:47session, we may not. So the boys will do the best they can, and we'll give it a best shot.
06:51Thanks, Babs.
06:52Fabian Coulthard there, Lockwood Racing, and I mumbled out there a few moments ago that
06:57there's a sponsor-related announcement for that team and car coming up in a week or so's
07:02time in Melbourne. Lockwood have announced their departure, so there's a replacement
07:06sponsor. We're looking at Scott McLaughlin rolling into the pit lane. He was third fastest
07:11yesterday. Craig Lowndes was the quickest man here yesterday, and he's got form on the
07:15board in both armour or qualifying together with the race victories here. Jamie Winkup was
07:19second quickest. McLaughlin was third. It's a scrambly start to qualify. We'll take a break.
07:27Back at Phillip Island and Shane Van Gisbergen heading down here to Fabian Coulthard. I understand
07:34that was an apology. Great sportsmanship, and there's no way that either of those guys want
07:40to be involved in anything silly at the beginning of a qualifying session, but unfortunately there's
07:45a price to pay, certainly in the case of Fabian Coulthard. So if you've only just joined
07:48us, we've got very little time left in this 10-minute qualifying session, and it got off
07:53to a very weird start in the rollout lap. Fabian Coulthard and Shane Van Gisbergen got together
07:58down at Turn 1. Meantime, back at the business end of what's going on, Jamie Winkup is the
08:03fastest man from Scott McLaughlin, Scott Pye, who was quick in first practice yesterday,
08:07then Jason Bright, Garth Pander, James Courtney, Craig Lowndes. But they've all now only gone out
08:13on an absolute green and brand new set of tyres, and we'll see a huge amount of fluctuation here in
08:21the timing. So Todd Kelly on screen has just gone to the top. Incidentally, this weekend for Todd, it is
08:27his 200th V8 Supercar Championship event. Congratulations to Todd, everybody at Jack Daniels Racing and
08:33Nissan Motorsport. David Reynolds there on screen has gone to position number three. But this is going to be
08:39topsy-turvy now in these remaining seconds. It'll change. There's only 60 seconds remaining.
08:45So it's going to change big time. So Kelly's the man, and he's just been surpassed by Mark
08:51Winterbottom. As Rihanna said before, 12 months since Frosty's last pole, and that means 12 months
08:55since Ford's last pole position in V8 Supercar Championship racing. So he wants to reverse that
09:02trend. He was super quick yesterday, Scaifey. He's down the order in 12th after combined practice.
09:07Michael Caruso goes to position two for Nissan. Todd Kelly, his teammate, in third. And there
09:14is the Bathurst champion number six, Chas Mostad. So pit exit has now closed. 20 seconds remaining
09:22for Armoural qualifying, and Mark Winterbottom is on top at the moment by a tiny margin. It's
09:28just a little over one-tenth of a second to Caruso. Kelly, Wincup, Reynolds, Pye, then Rick Kelly,
09:33McLaughlin, Will Davison's in the 10, then Jason Bright. Now yesterday it was very, very
09:39blustery. Chas Mostad position three on that lap that we caught him. There's the flag. Very
09:44blustery and overcast for the first practice. It actually cleared up and was quite sunny in
09:49the second practice, but still quite windy. And the wind trended more southerly as the
09:53day progressed and it was cloudy for the final practice session. Lowndes, P1, just as it
09:58was yesterday. One minute, 31.4. Very nice job, Craig Lowndes. And his teammate, Jamie Wincup,
10:06Shadows. Lowndes has had five pole positions this year. That's a great lap. That's almost
10:13half a second faster than the Winterbottom benchmark time, which was one hundredth faster than Caruso.
10:19There's going to be a little bit of activity still here. We're just checking Caruso's
10:25next lap. No, not quite good enough for 32 dead. So Lowndes, Wincup, Winterbottom, Caruso,
10:32Mostad. Check this because McLaughlin has been very, very fast. And the numbers look encouraging
10:37at the moment for the young Kiwi. And he may jump to the top here. And he does. One minute,
10:4431.39 for Scotty McLaughlin. There's a great battle going for Armour All Pole. And Krusty,
10:53Richard Holway in the background, his engineer saying, well done, mate. And it was very,
10:57very well done. So that's nine pole positions for him so far in 2014. And that is where there's
11:03a real battle between he and Jamie Wincup. There it is unofficially. McLaughlin, Lowndes,
11:08Wincup, Winterbottom, still no forward pole. Caruso, Mostad, then Rick Kelly, Jason Bright,
11:14Garth Pander, Todd Kelly, the top 10, and quite a few players who are down the order.
11:21We'll come back, take a break. A beautiful view of Western Port Bay, Phillip Island,
11:26the Southern Ocean. It is a great place to race for the V8 supercars.
11:30It's another moment to celebrate an Armour All Pole position here for Scott McLaughlin and Valvoline
11:40Volvo. Tremendous performance. And that shifts his tally along to nine in 2014. One clear of Jamie
11:48Wincup. Congratulations, Scotty. And he's with Rihanna.
11:51Congratulations, Scotty McLaughlin. Another $1,000 to the bank and the Christmas fund.
11:57Nine pole positions this year. You're on track to get that pole award at the end of the year.
12:00I'm trying. I'm trying my hardest. We can't win the championship, but we can definitely win that.
12:04So best way to win races and stuff is to start from pole. And we've done that a fair few times
12:09this year. So just got to keep it up now.
12:11There's no time to even get your helmet off because you've got to do it again in a couple
12:14of minutes' time. Congratulations, Scotty.
12:15I know. I might put this in the boot. Cheers.
12:18Hey, Craig Lowndes. Great performance. Front row. Now, there's a lot of feedback from you
12:21to your engineer, Jeremy Moore. What's the most important thing you want to get done in this car?
12:26I think we just need to settle the rear down a little bit. After the Masters, the track sort
12:30of goes away a little bit. It was coming towards us towards the end. But just if we get a little
12:34bit of rear stability, I think the car will be faster.
12:36You're certainly doing what you want to do. You want to be competitive this weekend.
12:39You're there.
12:39Yeah, look, the car's working well. The guys have done a great job. It's a circuit that I really enjoy.
12:44So just fingers crossed we can get another good starting position for race two and then
12:48see what the races bring.
12:49Good stuff, Lowndes. Keep enjoying it. Come for a walk with us. We'll come over and try
12:53and track down Jamie Wincup just next door here because, as we've said all weekend, this
12:57is such a crucial weekend for him. So he's doing, again, everything he needs to do on the second
13:02rail of the grid. Might just try and poke it. He's just having a debrief with his engineer
13:05David Couchy here at the moment. In fact, there's a lot of the brain trust of Red Bull in there
13:10at the moment. Just Mark Dutton, you see, who is just sitting back there, taking it all in.
13:15There's a lot of work going on at the moment. In fact, we might not be able to disturb them
13:18at the moment because this is pretty intense, but they are doing a lot to try and make Jamie's
13:22car that little bit faster for this next session.
13:25Thanks, Peretz. Yes, they are.
13:27And anytime he's not on the pole, you can be assured of the fact that Wincup will work
13:31very hard to rectify it next time around. And that's going to happen in just a moment
13:35because after this break, we'll have qualifying for race number 34 and we'll sort out another
13:40armour or pole position. We're at Phillip Island.
13:47We're back at Phillip Island. It's the Plus Fitness. Phillip Island, 400 this weekend.
13:53Races 33, 4 and 5. Qualifying's done for 33. The pole man, Scotty McLaughlin, but there was a
13:59little controversy at the start of the session, Beretz.
14:01Yeah, Shane Van Gispergen and Fabian Coulthard came together. Here's the situation for Shane.
14:05He is in the car ready to go, but there's extensive rear end damage that they're working on at
14:09the moment. Similar story just down the road for Fabian. They're trying to get that car
14:13right and out there. They say it is a bit of a long shot. It's unlikely. We'll see Fabian
14:17this session, guys.
14:18Yeah, it's not good, is it? Thanks for the update. That's important, Beretz, because this
14:22place is very hard on tyres. So I'm pretty sure that car number 14, Fabian Coulthard, lost
14:26a tyre in the process, and that compromises them. So suspension damage on the front of
14:32Fabian's car and on the right rear of Shane's car, and you do not need that scaping when
14:38you're coming into an important weekend like this, because those guys are all in the battle
14:41for the minors in the championship, either second or third.
14:44No doubt. That's what I was about to make the point, Neil, that when they are third and
14:48fifth in the series, and they're both going to start from the back of the grid for races
14:51today, and has a huge bearing on their battle with Winterbottom and Lowndes and Mostert in
14:57that sector of the field in terms of the championship. This is Russell Ingle in a borrowed car again
15:01this weekend. Nick Perkatt with slightly different livery, just in front, Berry Sideways coming
15:07out of Turn 1.
15:09So this is formerly a Gary Rogers Motorsport car, and it's been borrowed. In fact, the three
15:13cars, remember there was a lot of work done post-Bathurst to turn cars around and get them
15:17to the Gold Coast. So Reynolds, Ingle and Holdsworth are all in the borrowed cars. Here's
15:22the Geldwen entry, being driven by Jack Perkins, and the announcement during the week that unfortunately
15:26Jack's contract hasn't been renewed, that Lee Holdsworth will be replacing Jack Perkins
15:31for 2015, and therefore Holdsworth leaving Erebus Motorsport. As always, there's a lot going
15:37on behind the scenes in this caper. So quite a bit of movement. Remember, at our next event
15:44up in Sydney, Sydney Olympic Park, we're also going to see the return of Marcus Ambrose, who's been
15:48racing NASCAR in North America. He's coming back to drive for Dick Johnson, and a livery and sponsorship
15:53announcement relating to that car, and the Penske entry will be announced very shortly as well.
15:59So there's an awful lot of stuff building towards the 2015 season.
16:02And meanwhile, Mark Winterbottom is fastest from Todd Kelly, who's just gone to second. So
16:10Winterbottom with a 31.43. Todd Kelly 300 slower with a 31.46. Very good lap time.
16:17McLaughlin's first run, a 31.53. That's P3. Reynolds and Mostert, top five, Brett.
16:22Scafie has the professionalism of these Red Bull boys. They are going to sit here and wait.
16:27They only want one crack at it. They're going to make that count. But for Jamie Winkup and
16:31Craig Lowndes, they both made adjustments to the cars. They're going to roll the dice on
16:34one hit out in this qualifying session. And that's for a couple of reasons. They're hoping
16:38for the track condition to be at its best. They're hoping to find track space also,
16:42Brett's. But more importantly, they want to keep every last metre off those race tyres.
16:48Because trying to make the tyres survive the course of the journey is going to be a big
16:52story this weekend. Or Will Davison creeping in to turn four with the rear brakes just locked
16:56a little bit. And it's not just about the tyre degradation and the way the tyre is affected
17:02here. It's the hardest place in Australia on tyres. Neil's already alluded to the number
17:06of tyres that we've got this weekend. But the tyre is only good for one lap. When you
17:11do the fastest lap you can possibly do here, your second lap's not as good. So they've basically
17:16now just parked the cars, as Macaretta said, and concentrated 100% on the little changes,
17:22the little tweaks to do one red hot lap at the end of this session.
17:27On that topic, as we continue to watch Will Davison and Lukey Heights, the time that Mark
17:35Winterbottom achieved, the one minute 31.4, was actually four and a half tenths quicker
17:40than he did in that previous qualifying. So he's put together a better sequence in this
17:45second run for Mark Winterbottom. So he's got the provisional pole at the moment by
17:48a tiny margin over Todd Kelly in the Nissan. So it's Ford, Kelly, and then McLaughlin in
17:56the Volvo in third at the moment. Armoural pole continues in a minute.
18:05We're back at Phillip Island. We're southeast of Melbourne. This is qualifying for race number
18:1034 of the championship season, and that chopper shot is spectacular. The run, the roller coaster
18:16run, downhill into turn one, that very fast right-hander. It's an enormous amount of money
18:20that's been spent, time, effort, and energy invested in safety at this location. The place
18:25has been presented absolutely beautifully, as always, and we've sought out now car number
18:30one, Jamie Winkup, Red Bull Racing Australia. He was third fastest in qualifying for race
18:3433. That's his team boss, Roland Dane.
18:36Fourth gear run onto the straight. This is a critical lap for him now. Always that awkward
18:43gear change, the way the cars are geared. Fourth to fifth, right in the middle of the
18:46corner at turn 12, the last corner. On the good laps, you grab six just before you get
18:51to the bridge, and they're braking very deep down here, particularly when there's headwind,
18:55which there is at the moment. From about that direction, from the southwest, this is turn
18:59one, fifth, back to fourth, then third. And then it's a long, long, long wait. Patience
19:05with the throttle. Takes a long time before he can get back to 100% flat. A little bit
19:08of a correction mid-corner for the oversteer at the rear. And this, I reckon, is one of
19:13the best corners, if not the best in the country. It's absolutely flat stick. It's 250km an hour
19:20at peak. And then you've got to get it all stopped without locking in the brakes at four,
19:24and Winkup did it beautifully. The green box shows you that the numbers look encouraging
19:28for him. He's coming up to the exit now of Siberia, and the chopper shot really illustrates
19:33just the reason why the right side tyres take such a punish here, in particular the front
19:38right. Nick Perkat, car triple two, on the podium at Mount Panorama. On the podium at Sydney
19:45Motorsport Park. He's got momentum going in his career at the moment as well. Heavy haulage,
19:50Australia. And this is going to jump him right near the top, and it does. P2. One minute
19:5631.4. Winterbottom's still the benchmark. One minute 31.43. So there's .0044 between
20:04them at the moment. We go back to Winkup. Race director Tim Schenker, this is the final
20:09turn here. Two green boxes for Winkup. There's the change a little earlier that time from fourth
20:15to fifth. Watch for the shift to sixth. Before the bridge, it's a good lap for Winkup. A very
20:20good lap, and he goes to the top. One minute 31.0. A very impressive time. Not quite the
20:27measure of Winterbottom's time, this time last year, but it's so temperature and wind direction
20:33dependent here. Winterbottom's responding. Here he is, off the final corner. He's fifth
20:38at the moment. And he goes to position two, but not quite enough. It was .13, and McLaughlin's
20:45gone off at four. So McLaughlin wide on the exit of turn four down there. So it's Winkup
20:52and Winterbottom. We've heard that story before. Front row of the grid at the moment. Lowndes,
20:56position three. Then Todd Kelly in his 200th event. Then Caruso, Rick Kelly, Nick Percat.
21:02Amazing how you can be shuffled down the order so quickly. Percat's in front of his mentor,
21:07Garth Tander. And then McLaughlin ninth. He was pole for the last one. Hero to zero. And then
21:13Chas Most at position number 10. And there's the big lockup. And that's probably put a mark on that
21:17tire. Absolutely. Scotty McLaughlin. By the time he released the brake, he'd already carried that
21:23locked tire for probably 50 to 75 meters. So armor or pole, Jamie Winkup. It's nine apiece,
21:28Scafie. This is a great battle because we've got more qualifying tomorrow for the 200k race
21:34as they continue that little personal battle that's going on here. So the homework that Winkup was doing
21:39before when we didn't get to talk to him when Barrettes wandered into the garage paid off.
21:430.13 the margin at the end of it all. We'll take another break and the V8 supercar coverage
21:48continues from Phillip Island very, very shortly.
22:02Armor or pole position for race number 34 goes to Jamie Winkup. Will he grab that championship
22:08today? Or does it go all the way to Sydney? It was a brilliant performance, a nice comeback. He was
22:13third in the earlier qualifying. A pole in that one. He's got nine apiece now with Scotty McLaughlin.
22:18It's been a great story so far this year. The battle between those guys is with Barrettes.
22:24Well, Jamie Winkup, in order to win this championship, you've got to work your way through a checklist.
22:28That was a big tick you've just completed. Now, does that alleviate some of the pressure of this weekend?
22:32Yeah, not so much. The track was quite slippery for the first run. We didn't quite have the right car
22:39for the condition. But we had a bit of a demon tweak in the middle there and found a good half
22:43a second in the car. It's amazing. You just see one click on one thing and off it goes. So the car was
22:48much better. Really happy with the pole. A good tweak. Well done. Congratulations. Yeah, thank you.
22:52Thank you. A couple of reasonable races this afternoon. So at least we started at the front. Thanks mate.
22:57Mark Winterbottom, we know you won't go down without a fight. P4 and P2 for these two races,
23:04sitting right alongside Jamie Winkup. Yeah, it's good to be back up the front. You know,
23:09you know you can do it. I know our team can do it. But some set up things we're changing
23:14aren't making sense. So you pretty well go back to basics and you're back up the front. So yeah,
23:19it's a cool little race. You know, you never give up. He's in the box seat, but hey, you're brought up
23:24pretty tough. So we'll keep fighting. Anything can happen at this racetrack.
23:27As we have seen many years before. Yeah, he, you know, anything can happen. But you know,
23:31he's 402 points clear for a reason. He's on pole position and whatever it is, second or third. So,
23:37you know, we can only try and put pressure on him. But he's quick and he's bloody good. There's
23:41no hiding behind it. So we'll try our best. But it's about the race win today. That's what we want.
23:46Good luck, Crossy. Thank you.

25:29at Phillip Island this afternoon with back-to-back V8 supercar races. Qualifying's done and dusted,
25:36so let's turn our attention to race one. Red Bull teammates Jamie Wincup and Craig Lowndes head the

25:48on the fourth line. If Lowndesie can take the chequered flag in one of the three races this weekend,
25:53he'd go past Markscape as the winningest driver on the aisle. For this afternoon's action, Tatsbet are
