00:00:52to lose too much track position at that point of the race then blaze along a little bit further
00:00:57get to our number 24 our critical lap number then fill him all the way up as we said and that will
00:01:02get you home now if you have a look at an overview of that you see most of the activities in the front
00:01:07half of the race it's very rare to see a winning strategy where the lead is stopped toward the end
00:01:13of the race you usually do that if you want to do something clever from the back remember we've got
00:01:16to split our strategies because we don't want double stacking look out for cars that might choose
00:01:20to pit in the early laps of the race that's going to be interesting now i want to talk about dampers
00:01:25for a sec you know them as shock absorbers at home we all have them in our road cars here they are
00:01:29the category uses super shock olans or sacks they're the three brands of dampers that are allowed in the
00:01:36category look at this vision let me show you what a damper does in a race car i've talked a lot about
00:01:40tire contact patch how important that patch there is with the road so you've got to keep it on the road
00:01:46now watch this this car doesn't come down and bounce three or four times as you would expect
00:01:50comes down and settles beautifully when the shock is compressed it has an equally as big load
00:01:56to stop it rebounding right and it's got the spring that's pushing in watch again here

00:15:12And if Tim was riding it too much in that warm-up lap,
00:15:16he may have put excessive temperature into it.
00:15:19And a lot of times with carbon clutches,
00:15:20you actually have to slip the clutch on the warm-up lap
00:15:23to have the temperature come up so that the clutch normalises.
00:15:27So if you just leave the clutch cold,
00:15:29you can't really tell what bite it's got.
00:15:32So Tim would have warmed the clutch up.
00:15:34And then by the time he got there, maybe it was over temp.
00:15:37So a very smart decision from the officials then
00:15:40because we've seen some catastrophic starts
00:15:44when you've got a car parked at the front.

00:25:37I think a lot of people in the pit lane initially reacted to what looked like a heap of smoke and trauma down there.
00:25:42There's a lock break here for Fabian as well.
00:25:44So he's gone straight ahead.
00:25:47So I was about to say, he's really struggling at turns five and six.
00:25:50I went and spent a little bit of time with him between qualifying and the race to understand what the issue was.
00:25:55As now Mostat and Todd Kelly come in as well.
00:25:57They're taking their first stop.
00:25:59So a lot of those guys, Neil, they went a lap down.
00:26:03So Perkak, Courtney, Winkup, they all went a lap down.
00:26:06So the danger with that, when you make an early stop and the leaders are effectively in front of you by more than a lap,
00:26:13is if the safety car comes out, you're gone.
00:26:16So they need to be very careful at the moment that they get back on strategy with McLaughlin and Van Gisbergen.
00:26:22It was pretty wild down there when Courtney drove around the outside of Winkup on warm tyres.
00:26:28And then Perkak was just, he jumped Winkup in the pit stop.
00:26:34So there's some fuel strategy playing out here also.

00:27:04It's not hard to be on the wrong side of the half second that we're seeing with everybody in qualifying.

00:29:17was that Hercat, who's in the Heavy Hortage Australia car in front,
00:29:22wasn't using the kerbing down here at turn 5.
00:29:24We're about to land down there.
00:29:25We're looking from James Courtney's car.
00:29:28So let's see whether or not he has to use it this time or not.
00:29:31But in qualifying, he's stayed right off it.
00:29:33It proved to be quite quick for him.
00:29:34He's used a little bit of it there this time.
00:29:36So just changing his technique slightly.
00:29:38But quite a number of guys are approaching that complex
00:29:41with very different theories.
00:29:42And we saw it yesterday as Hercat has a big lunge here

01:16:24daniels racing but this
01:16:25is our man in second
01:16:26position he's six seconds
01:16:27adrift from the leader
01:16:28scott mclaughlin just
01:16:30continues to stroll along
01:16:32brilliantly been a couple
01:16:33of little reliability
01:16:33gremlins that's hurt these
01:16:35guys championship wise but
01:16:36there's been no doubting
01:16:37the speed that battle in
01:16:39adelaide yeah men's
01:16:41winning the championship
01:16:41the clips of 500 was
01:16:43absolutely outstanding see
01:16:44dahlgren just went
01:16:45straight through at turn
01:16:46five as well here's the
01:16:47gap second to third this
01:16:49is chas mostard who's
01:16:51done a good job neil he
01:16:52struggled earlier in the
01:16:54weekend remember on
01:16:55friday he wasn't
01:16:57comfortable with the car
01:16:58he didn't like the
01:17:00amount of wheel movement
01:17:01instability etc over the
01:17:03bumps he's done a great
01:17:04job to respond to that and
01:17:06the great thing also that
01:17:07i've got to make comment
01:17:08on is that there are five
01:17:10manufacturers within the
01:17:12top seven cars so great
01:17:14job in terms of those new
01:17:15manufacturers joining our
01:17:16series
01:17:17about 1500 meters of
01:17:23racetrack remaining now
01:17:24for mark winterbottom
01:17:25pepsi max forward
01:17:26performance racing on that
01:17:28subject of most it comes
01:17:30into this race 18th in the
01:17:31championship so there'll be
01:17:32valuable points for him and
01:17:34it equals his performance
01:17:35earlier in the weekend
01:17:35getting on the podium third
01:17:37but for this man he's going
01:17:39to notch up another victory
01:17:40he's second this weekend and
01:17:42it's career win 26 for mark
01:17:45winterbottom with these
01:17:47sweeping left handers
01:17:49remaining he threatened at
01:17:53winton and then improved over the
01:17:56weekend to grab a victory and he's
01:17:58closed out on them again here this
01:17:59weekend with an emphatic
01:18:00performance congratulations well
01:18:02done mark winterbottom for
01:18:03performance racing
01:18:04and it was exactly 6.9 seconds in the end of
01:18:14scotty mclaughlin and it'll be chas
01:18:17most at home in third there he is

01:18:48two very special outcome because the
01:18:51jason richards trophy is at stake as

01:19:02him over the weekend neil he's been
01:19:05able to get by guys he's been
01:19:07authoritative with his overtaking he's
01:19:09looked after the tyres he's made the
01:19:11car flow very good bounce back in terms
01:19:14of the championship and a pretty
01:19:16profound thing on an anzac commemorative
01:19:17weekend to win the jason richards
01:19:20memorial that is now the reaction for
01:19:23forward fans fantastic no shortage of
01:19:28blue in that stand and winterbottom bags
01:19:31it up in celebration
01:19:34well done frosty so it was a win in race 11
01:19:44for him here it was a win in race nine at
01:19:47winton on the sunday haven't they found
01:19:50some form all of a sudden remember in the
01:19:54second half of last year's championship
01:19:56he came on hugely the start was roping

01:22:21crew this weekend's been awesome frosty's
01:22:23been setting the pace and um yeah we
01:22:25also got car six up there how fantastic
01:22:26is that so we'll go up there spray each
01:22:28other with champagne all the crew because
01:22:29they deserve it they've been working hard
01:22:31we've had a bit of a slow start the
01:22:32season but we're back so we're ready to
01:22:34go off you go chas enjoy it thank you
01:22:37down here will davis hot and bothered
01:22:39fresh out of the car mate sorry mate i
01:22:41know how you must feel when you get out of
01:22:42a battle like that picked up nine spots
01:22:44for position seven in the mercedes mate you
01:22:46must be wrapped that's a good strong
01:22:47effort from you guys actually am um it's
01:22:49one of those races where you're like you
01:22:51for me i punched a fist when i crossed
01:22:53the line because there was a maximum we
01:22:55could do there was no safety cars at a
01:22:57track where it's so hard to pass um you
01:22:59know thanks to luke and um my engineer
01:23:01for the you know strategy um coming in
01:23:04lap one um we knew we're going to need
01:23:06real good tire life to make that work and
01:23:07you know we just pushed pushed car was a
01:23:09good step forward i wish we could qualify
01:23:10again now because it's actually where we
01:23:12need it well but did you set out on that
01:23:13strategy at the beginning i mean it was
01:23:14quite a clever one we thought at the
01:23:16start it was good it jumped you some
01:23:17positions but you still had a big fuel
01:23:18load to put in later so you had to make
01:23:19some runs then well we needed speed we
01:23:21needed consistency we needed a big race
01:23:23from me out on my own racing myself and
01:23:25uh you know unless i got a banzai uh
01:23:28rocket start where i was going to make
01:23:29up four or five spots that was always the
01:23:31strategy and those races are really hard
01:23:33because every 10th you know the guys
01:23:34are going to start funneling out and you
01:23:36know you've just got to maximize
01:23:37everything you got and hopefully sneak
01:23:38out in front and um it was a lot it was
01:23:40actually a lot of fun it was frustrating
01:23:42because i wanted to be on that tire
01:23:43strategy all those guys because i actually
01:23:44had a car to fight with then but um
01:23:46anyway promising great points great
01:23:48result for erebus and um yeah bring on
01:23:50perth we're learning all the time good
01:23:52on you mate very happy for you cheers

01:26:09so let's check out the highlights now race number 13
01:26:22today's 200 kilometer race supposed to be 70 laps but it was quickly turned into 69
01:26:27with a problem with tim slade who eventually did get underway with a snag with the clutch on this
01:26:32car and how wild was that start with dave reynolds down the inside of the two fpr
01:26:38falcons big spin there for dalgren at turn four it's an amazing place this guy has been so competitive
01:26:47all weekend scott mclaughlin a little bump there with fabian coulthard and rick kelly
01:26:52at one of the wildest spots on this layout you can see there the amount of oversteer this great
01:26:59shot that we had on board with scott mclaughlin and their bumps in the body language of the cars
01:27:05nowhere do we see this stuff at the stop we saw the brakes locked we saw a mirror change there for winter bottom
01:27:13and that was the key thing he was jumped in the pits and have a look at this moment
01:27:16for david reynolds in the bottle of falcon big lock up there for fabian coulthard comes back on in front
01:27:25of courtney and then this drama with wink up and percat bang into the pepsi max sign mark dutton
01:27:31looking on it's been a shocking weekend for red bull racing great job scott mclaughlin and that
01:27:38is a superb performance by mark winter bottom well well done frosty adding to that tally of career
01:27:48wins for him very popular with the crowd and the winner of the jason richards memorial trophy
