00:00Welcome back to Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek.
00:07Well, the rain hasn't arrived, but it's threatening.
00:10A big crowd building up to watch the action this afternoon.
00:1325 races down in our 38 race championship season.
00:17Win Cup's got a 15-point margin from Winterbottom.
00:19Lowndes, Courtney and Coolthard, there's been a lot of movement in the mid-pack
00:22in the top 10 in the championship.
00:25Eight drivers in this field that are active in the 25 cars
00:30have had a race win at this location.
00:33The guy that's had more race wins than any other is Craig Lowndes.
00:36He's had five of them.
00:37On the subject of the pit lane, let's get down there with Rihanna.
00:40Yeah, the question is, can Nissan boys continue their rise in form
00:43off the back of a strong weekend last time out at Queensland Raceway?
00:48Remembering James Moffat scored his first ever pole position
00:50and Michael Caruso challenged for a podium.
00:53These boys came into the weekend full of confidence
00:56that they were going to be quick.
00:58And in practice this morning, they had three cars in the top 10.
01:01Keep an eye out for these guys.
01:02They are going to be fast.
01:04Now, one guy that's really, I think, a potential for doing well this weekend.
01:08Right behind me, Craig Lance.
01:09This is a very tough circuit to sort yourself out on.
01:14He has proven many times that he can do that.
01:16This is the first time, remember, this new generation of car has been here.
01:19Craig won his first race here with HRT way back in 1996
01:24and then won his first race with this team some nine years later.
01:29I think he's going to be right on.
01:30And remember this weekend, he's only 162 points behind.
01:34That guy over there just departing.
01:35Jamie Winkup, who, seriously, it's only just one race away from turning that around.
01:42Mark Larker, Brianna Crean.
01:44We'll have Mark Beretta down in the lane as well.
01:46There's the line-up of drivers.
01:47We've got 25 in all.
01:49Don't forget, Lowndes is on 97 race victories.
01:51He's on his way to 100.
01:53Joining us in the commentary box this afternoon, Mark Scaife.
01:55As I said earlier, V8 Extra has done an enormous amount of winning at this racetrack.
02:00Scaife, I reckon we're in for a great race meeting this weekend.
02:02I do too, Neil.
02:03It's a fantastic racetrack.
02:05It's such a big, fast-flowing circuit, and we always, in qualifying, see the guys who
02:11are committed at this place and take big risks.
02:15You get big rewards here, especially turn one.
02:18I mean, it's one of my favourite corners in the whole of Australia.
02:21It's such a fast entry speed, 270 kilometres an hour.
02:25Let's take a look at the Eastern Creek City Motorsport Park layout.
02:30It's a little bit shorter than it used to be.
02:32It's 3.91 kilometres, and it was shortened in 2012, taking a little kink out of it.
02:39The old turn nine is now turn eight, the slowest corner on the track.
02:44As I said, 270km approaching turn one, roughly 40% of the lap on full throttle, and these sectors
02:50are going to be ultra-important.
02:53The yellow sector into turn one, huge gains to be made into that very fast left-hander.
02:58In the middle of the track, fast-flowing corners, and this man, Jamie Winkup, has been the benchmark
03:04in terms of his qualifying performance throughout his career, and he is a guy at this circuit
03:11who was actually, in the previous session, Croppo, the fastest on the hard compound tyre.
03:16Championship points for you.
03:17Just as a reminder, if you didn't catch up with all the detail as we left Queensland Raceway,
03:22and Jamie Winkup has assumed the lead again for the first time in about five months,
03:25he's got a bit of oversteer practice going on there at the final corner.
03:28From Mark Winterbottom, Craig Lowndes, position three in the championship, and then James Courtney,
03:32Fabian Coulthard.
03:34Fabian dropped a couple of spots at the Queensland Raceway.
03:36So here's Winkup getting on with it.
03:38A little reminder of what we're doing today.
03:40We've got two 10-minute qualifying sessions, the first of them starting now.
03:44We've got a 100-kilometre race this afternoon, followed by another.
03:48There'll be 26 laps each, and it's all Dunlop hard tyres today.
03:52Tomorrow, we have 200km of racing where they've got to use the soft and the hard tyre.
03:58Different strategies will be at play there.
03:59Wherever you're watching, around Australia on 7, across in New Zealand and around the world,
04:04welcome, hope you're enjoying the V8 Supercar Championship of 2014.
04:08Had 11 different drivers win a race so far this year.
04:1114 different drivers have occupied a spot on the podium.
04:15No clear patterns have emerged.
04:16However, in the recent past, Jamie Winkup has been very strong.
04:21He's won six of the nine recent races, and he's unsettling this man.
04:26He's got a little story to tell this weekend.
04:28Front brake locking for him into turn eight, so they'll need to address that.
04:31Because his regular engineer, Grant McPherson, is at the track, but he's got glandular fever,
04:36so he can't speak correctly.
04:38So they've had to draft in a former engineer from Ford Performance Racing,
04:41who was most recently at Dick Johnson Racing, Campbell Little.
04:44He was down in Perisher, skiing with the family.
04:46He was on his way travelling.
04:47Took a call yesterday from Tim Edwards and went,
04:50what are you doing for the weekend?
04:51Feel like playing the understeer-oversteer game.
04:53So they were a partnership previously, Mark Winterbottom and Campbell Little.
04:57They are a partnership again this weekend, so some engineering support.
04:59He needs it at the moment because a little bit of the momentum
05:02has gone away from Mark Winterbottom in the recent past.
05:07So all having their first exploratory run here to understand what they're dealing with.
05:12Lowndes is the fastest man.
05:13He's sitting on a one-minute 31.2.
05:15Then it's Kultad.
05:17Jason Bright in third.
05:18We're in Sydney this weekend, New South Wales.
05:28Our destination is Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek,
05:31about 40 kilometres west of the CBD.
05:34We're watching qualifying for the V8 supercars.
05:36Race number 26, Craig Lowndes, is the fastest man at the moment.
05:39The reference time is a one-minute 31.2.
05:42Most people have had their initial blast.
05:44They're now having to think about some adjustments
05:46and getting on to another tyre set.
05:48Plenty to talk about.
05:49Here's Mark Beretta.
05:50There's an old saying that when the Holden Racing team is going well,
05:52the championship is going well.
05:53Actually, I think Mark Scaife said that.
05:55But the good news is the Holden Racing team is going very well.
05:58They've re-signed a new deal with Holden to take them into the future.
06:01And Garth Tander has himself a new car.
06:04He slipped up to ninth in the championship,
06:05sort of under the radar at the moment, Garth.
06:07And James Courtney is faring even better.
06:09He's up to fourth in the championship.
06:11A real contender here this weekend.
06:14And Tander's performance at Townsville, Mark Beretta, was fantastic.
06:18And a brand-new car for him this weekend.
06:20I asked him after practice, what was it like?
06:22Is it giving you any different feeling, behavioural-wise?
06:27Does it feel like a new car?
06:29And he said, well, you know,
06:30then he goes back into the usual driver chat
06:31about different track, different circumstances.
06:33But they've made subtle changes.
06:35They're not in a hurry to explain what they are.
06:38But they think that there's a bit of progress in there.
06:40So they continue the climb forward at the Holden Racing team.
06:43And they've been very effective in the recent past.
06:45Of course, James Courtney was super quick at Queensland Raceway as well.
06:48Garth was actually fastest.
06:50Oh, sorry, second fastest in practice one.
06:52And James was fourth fastest in practice two.
06:55So they look like they've got reasonable form.
06:57Garth's always gone well around here.
06:59It's a big, fast place.
07:01And it's a circuit that he likes.
07:03James, Carl, currently is eighth.
07:06And I'm just looking for Courtney.
07:08So at the moment, Lowndes from Holdsworth.
07:11Mostard, who just pops to third.
07:13Fabian, Coulthard, Van Gisburgh and McLaughlin.
07:16Bright, Wall, Winkup.
07:18Winkup's on a good lap at the moment.
07:20Tander, tenth.
07:21So this qualifying sorts out our grid order for our first race coming up this afternoon.
07:28James Courtney now goes to the top.
07:30You just saw him go through left to right, down into turn one.
07:34As Mark said before, it's a great approach.
07:36It's 270 kilometres an hour.
07:38And you get well past the 100 metre braking board.
07:41And then you tip the car in, down one gear to fifth.
07:45And kind of ride the brake and gently coax the car into that very fast left-hander there.
07:50It's a wonderful corner to watch these cars do their thing.
07:53And a little bit more background about this racetrack.
07:55155 kilometres an hour average speed.
07:58It's 215 kilometres an hour at the slowest point in turn one.
08:03And it's very hard on tyres was the point I really wanted to get to.
08:06So that right front tyre and the right rear tyre work excessively hard here.
08:11They make big temperature.
08:13The teams will have to manage a thing called camber very carefully.
08:15And tyre pressure very carefully.
08:17And as the weekend progresses and we get deeper into these races,
08:21you will see people battling with their tyre grip here.
08:24There are two very distinct set-up options here with the way you sort the car out.
08:28One of them is to achieve a very fast single lap, which is 90-odd seconds.
08:32But it's a very different question with a very different set of answers involved
08:36in trying to extend the car's performance across the duration.
08:40This is really heating up now.
08:41Wincup has gone to the top of the 30.7.
08:44McLaughlin, 30.77.
08:46Rick Kelly, great job.
08:4830.82.
08:50Lowndes, 30.84.
08:52There's just over one-tenth of a second separating the top four cars.
08:56And there is nothing in it.
08:58Caruso, who went to position two a minute ago,
09:01he's currently ninth, but he's on a good lap.
09:04And Norton this weekend with different colours
09:07to celebrate a new product for the Norton Hornets
09:09and Michael Caruso with the reverse colour scheme on the car.
09:13So Wincup's the man on the provisional pole at the moment.
09:17And remember that if he actually nails this
09:19and nobody knocks him off in these dying stages,
09:21he moves to pole position number 58.
09:24And that's an all-time record in the V8 supercar business,
09:27eclipsing the record that was previously held by Peter Brock
09:31that he equaled recently.
09:34Here's Rick Kelly in position three at the moment.
09:37And no improvement.
09:38In fact, three-tenths of a second slower on that last lap.
09:41There's the man.
09:42He's got the most number of pole positions
09:45in the history of Australian Touring Car Championship
09:48and V8 Supercar Championship Racing.
09:50Congratulations to Jamie Wincup.
09:52Another armour-all pole position.
09:54Scotty McLaughlin had a better run on his second set of tyres
09:57than he made a little mistake round the back at turn seven earlier.
10:01And Rick Kelly, nice job for Nissan there in position number three.
10:05A couple of guys who'll be frustrated there.
10:07Mark Winterbottom, 17th.
10:09Did you see that name flick through there?
10:10Russell Ingle's had a difficult one as well.
10:12We'll come back and unravel some of the stories in just a moment.
10:24It's another armour-all pole position to Jamie Wincup,
10:26our reigning champion in the series.
10:28Car number one, Red Bull Racing Australia, Holden Commodore.
10:31And he got home by the tiniest of margins.
10:34Five one-hundredths of a second from the Volvo.
10:37Scotty McLaughlin.
10:38Outstanding performance.
10:40So there's the scene in the pit lane.
10:44And remember, it's a very tight turnaround between one qualifying to the next.
10:47So there's a quick opportunity for a debrief, a tweak of a tyre pressure,
10:52little changes to shock absorbers.
10:53But there's not an awful lot you can do in this narrow window, Mark.
10:56It's very difficult, Neil.
10:57And little ride height changes.
10:59As you said, a little shock absorber change probably is the key one.
11:02And often it's about creating the balance, meaning the front grip versus the rear grip
11:07to make the car flow as well as you possibly can.
11:10And this man, Jamie Wincup, what an extraordinary job to knock Peter Brock off for number of pole
11:17positions in the history of the sport.
11:19And he has been the benchmark qualifier for many years.
11:22Coming into this race weekend, 330 V8 supercar race starts.
11:27So the strike rate ratio here of success with pole positions now clicking over 58, a very
11:33high percentage of races.
11:34And clearly he races very effectively and intelligently as well.
11:37But when you give yourself that head start from the pole position, you set up the next
11:42part of the equation.
11:43And that's what's been masterful from his perspective over the years, Crompo, because clearly his
11:48racing performance, as you said, and the way he achieves his speed, the way he flows
11:53the car, the way he keeps the momentum up is the benchmark in the category.
11:57But you've got to do that by being competitive in every area of qualifying.
12:04And when I say every area, that means as deep under brakes as you can possibly be.
12:09Make the turn in for the fast corners so accurate.
12:12Be on the throttle so you keep the mid-corner speed up.
12:15And this is the sort of interaction that he's experienced with his engineering group to
12:21be at this level.
12:22That's the intensity.
12:23Look at the look on his face.
12:24That's why he achieves those sorts of results.
12:29We're just going to quickly interrupt Scotty McLaughlin.
12:31I know you don't have much time in between these sessions, but Scotty's so close at the
12:34top there.
12:35Your qualifying form continues to get stronger as the year goes on.
12:38Yeah, it's awesome.
12:38The car's great in qualifying, but obviously everyone knows our race pace isn't too good.
12:42But we think we've sorted that.
12:43But yeah, moving on, we've got another qualifying session to go.
12:46I think we should be okay.
12:48It's just one of those things.
12:50Jamie's obviously found some form as well.
12:51I mean, he hasn't lost any.
12:52He's bloody awesome.
12:53So yeah, just got to try and see how we go.
12:55Talk us through what needs to be changed to get those forms tied to the car.
12:59I just see a little bit more turn.
13:01Yeah, it was a bit different to my last lap in practice there.
13:04So nearly pushed right off the road there in turn one.
13:07So that's a bit edgy when you're doing about 250 clicks.
13:10So a bit more turn will be all right.
13:12Thanks, Scotty.
13:13Thanks.
13:13Cheers.
13:14Scotty McLaughlin there in the Volvo S60.
13:17It's been a great story so far in the 2014 championship.
13:20So coming into the weekend, Win Cup had six pole positions in this championship season.
13:25He's now got seven in the championship season.
13:28He just missed qualifying.
13:28He's just knocked off the Brock record that sat for a long time at 57.
13:32Took him a little while to do it, Scopey, because his last pole position was at Darwin
13:36when we were at Hidden Valley in the Northern Territory.
13:38Let's get down into pit lane again with Mark Larkin.
13:41Yeah, Rick Kelly, position three.
13:42Great job, mate.
13:43Now, we know that this circuit, the car is working hard a lot of the time in terms of
13:47it's moving around.
13:48We know your chassis is good.
13:49Did you expect that good a result, mate?
13:51I'm working hard around there as well.
13:53It's not just the car.
13:54What are you talking about?
13:55Fair enough, fair enough.
13:55Yeah, look, I didn't feel the car was that good.
13:59I didn't get the most out of it in the second practice, and then I basically matched the
14:02time, so I was pretty disheartened until EP said on the radio, you were third.
14:06So we're pretty happy with that.
14:07We've only got a couple of minutes until I go out again, so I just don't want to stuff
14:10up the second one.
14:11If we can really get some good points today, I'm excited.
14:13There's a long way to go, and it's pretty tough, but we're in a good position, so I'm
14:17not going to guess.
14:18I just don't want to stuff this next one up.
14:20All right.
14:20It was great to see, mate.
14:21Go and drive that thing.
14:22Well done.
14:22Rick Kelly, Jack Daniels Racing, Nissan Altima.
14:26He'll start from third position for race number 26.
14:29We'll have a quick break.
14:29When we come back, we'll have qualifying for race number 27.
14:33Stay with us live on 7.
14:34Very little in the way of time to do anything other than have a quick think, settle down,
14:45take a breath, a drink, a fine adjustment or two, and send them again.
14:49It's another 10 minutes of qualifying now for race number 27, the V8 Supercar Championship.
14:54Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek, down to the lane again with Mark Moretta.
14:58Hey, Neil.
14:58That was a big milestone for Jamie Wynn Cup, and yet he came in here.
15:01There was no celebration.
15:02They were really heads down trying to get the car even better for this next qualifying
15:06session, and Roland Dane, it was a big milestone.
15:08I know there's no time to celebrate at the moment, but what is it that makes Jamie so special?
15:12Why is he so good?
15:14Apart from the sort of natural level of talent you need to compete at this level, I put it
15:19down to hard work.
15:20He works so hard.
15:22When he's focused, he is as focused a driver as I've ever seen, and he's absolutely focused
15:29at the moment, has been for the last few weekends, you know, of racing, and he's really in a,
15:34you get him in a zone, and it's pretty difficult to put him down, which is great for us.
15:42It is very good.
15:43Roland, Armoural were calculating yesterday that they have paid Jamie in pole winnings
15:48something in the order of a quarter of a million dollars.
15:51Where has that money gone, Roland?
15:53Yeah, I'd like to know.
15:55Somebody just said that to me just now.
15:57I think it must have been a quarter of a million lira, because I don't remember getting it.
16:01Maybe we did.
16:02We've got some more coming.
16:03Well done.
16:03Great milestone.
16:04Great, it is.
16:06Roland Dane there, the owner of Triple Eight Race Engineering, Red Bull Racing Australia.
16:10Thanks, Mark Beretta.
16:11Jamie Wincup, it's been a remarkable story.
16:13Mark Scaife touched on it a moment ago.
16:15It's not an easy thing to do to be able to find those tiny margins, and that's what it was
16:18in the last one.
16:19Five one-hundredths of a second is all it takes to be the difference between the bloke.
16:23Oh, off the road for Lowndes.
16:25Not quite, in fact, heading outside the boundary line, but not off the road for Craig Lowndes.
16:29We've seen him do that one or two times over the years.
16:32I started looking at numbers, Scaifey, because with nine victories to his name so far this
16:37year for Wincup, I thought, well, he might even be on to bust some of his old records.
16:40But he's got big numbers that he set himself to knock off.
16:44He had 15 race wins in 2008.
16:47That's a number.
16:48But he's certainly been impressive.
16:49What was amazing was the way he came back from that break that he had in Bali.
16:54And as I said earlier in the broadcast, to win six of the last nine races, just a massive
16:58change in his approach.
17:00They've re-upped.
17:02And remember, they had an engineering change in there as well.
17:04So Mark Dutton became team manager.
17:05Dave Couch is now his engineer.
17:07They're trying to learn and understand that new relationship.
17:09And there's been a similar thing going on in the garage next door at Performance Racing,
17:13that they're making the most of it at Red Bull at the moment.
17:16And it's a lot about the Sunday results, because although he had some wins early in the year,
17:20they were primarily Saturday results.
17:22And Winterbottom was winning the Sunday races where the major points were on offer.
17:26So there's been a real shift in that.
17:28And that refocus that Rowan just spoke about with Wincup and saying that you were referring
17:33to Neil, when he's on, he is as good as we've ever seen in this sport.
17:40And that is an extraordinary qualifying performance for him to knock a long-established Peter Brock
17:45record off.
17:46There's a little bit of urgency in the voices of Pepsi Max 4th Performance Racing at the
17:50moment, because Chas and Mark, Mostert and Winterbottom, that is, 16th and 17th in that
17:55last one.
17:56They're searching for set-up performance at the moment.
17:58While everybody comes in and has to think about their second run, we'll take a quick break
18:02and come back with the conclusion of Race 27 Qualifying.
18:11We've got just on three minutes remaining for qualifying Race 27.
18:15This is Craig Lowndes in the break.
18:17This time he does bowler wide outside the boundary line and just picks up the rocks on the outside.
18:21So they've brought him back into the lane to have a look at those tyres, perhaps make
18:24another adjustment.
18:25It's very easy to do down there in the braking approach to turn number two.
18:28Here he is off the road again on the wrong side of the concrete ripple strip down there
18:33as well.
18:33Now, it's actually quicker out there.
18:35There's been a little bit of cloud cover.
18:37There's the engineering group at Red Bull Racing.
18:39Mark Dutton, team manager on the left.
18:41Dave Couchy on the right.
18:42And this time it's Jamie Wincup getting wide and weird down here at turn two.
18:47But you saw in the background of the shot to the east, back towards Sydney City.
18:51It's very, very dark at the moment and threatening those showers that we've been talking about.
18:55But the cloud cover's made the track quick.
18:58So McLaughlin's punched out a time that's four tenths faster than the time set by Wincup
19:02in the previous qualifying.
19:04So McLaughlin on provisional pole there, 30.3.
19:07He's about to have his second run.
19:08He's got a heck of a margin.
19:10It's 0.9 of a second to Lowndes, who's come back in now to have a look at those potentially
19:15damaged tyres.
19:16So they're all out there now.
19:18Lowndes is the only one coming into pit lane.
19:19And the rest of the field have put their last set of tyres on.
19:23So the last just under two minutes, Lowndes is out.
19:27So he's currently second.
19:28But a 31.2, I don't think he'll stay there at that.
19:31I would say there's going to be some people that will fill the void between McLaughlin
19:36and Lowndes.
19:37As Neil said, there's nine tenths of a second gap from McLaughlin with a 30.3.
19:42Fantastic achievement by Scott in the Volvo for the first run in this session.
19:47Todd Kelly third.
19:49Winnerbottom much better in fourth.
19:51But this is going to change.
19:53We're on board now with James Courtney.
19:55We've got nine in-car cameras covering all the action for you live this weekend.
20:01James Courtney, very important run onto the main straight.
20:04You exit there at roughly 110 kilometres an hour.
20:08McLaughlin, meanwhile, has actually done the fastest first sector.
20:11So he's batted on with it.
20:12Courtney now, 30.6.
20:14Reynolds, 30.7.
20:16Van Gisbergen, 30.5.
20:18Mustard, 30.8.
20:20To Lowndes, immediately to sixth.
20:22James Moffat now into P5.
20:25So enormous amount of shuffling going on on the timing at the moment.
20:28We apologise.
20:29We've got a timing glitch.
20:31But we'll try our best to keep you informed.
20:33So McLaughlin is going on with it, as Mark said.
20:36He's got the benchmark time of a 130.3.
20:38He's also the fastest man to the second sector on the racetrack.
20:42Then it's Coulthard, who's tested very well here earlier in the year.
20:46Then Van Gisbergen in third.
20:47James Courtney, Lee Holtzworth with his newly signed deal.
20:50Dave Reynolds, Garth Panda, brand new car.
20:53James Moffat, Tim Slade, who took us for a ride earlier in the day.
20:56And then further down is Rick Kelly.
20:58But it's changing all over the place at the moment.
21:00McLaughlin could better this.
21:01It might be better than a 30.3.
21:04Oh, it's almost exactly the same time as he achieved on the previous lap.
21:08He lost some time in the third and final sector.
21:11Here's Wincup's response.
21:13He's last in the field at the moment.
21:15He's got to make this one stick.
21:17He's 25th.
21:20This sport's unbelievable, isn't it?
21:22He could be fastest in the previous run.
21:24He's currently last.
21:26So if this doesn't work for him, he's on a pretty good lap.
21:29It's a little bit too much oversteer.
21:31Too much slide coming onto the straight.
21:32Just to see where this one lands him.
21:35Looks like he'll go to the front row and he does.
21:38Great job, Jamie Wincup.
21:4030.51.
21:41Still two-tenths of a second away from an extraordinary lap time.
21:46Neil picked it because it was overcast.
21:48It's slightly lighter again now.
21:50But when it was really heavily clouded over, McLaughlin did a great lap to be fast.
21:56As Fabian caught third, Van Gisbergen fourth.
21:59Michael Caruso up to P5.
22:00He just jumped up a spot there.
22:02Van Gisbergen's come into the lane now.
22:04Now, Lowndes, you said that it wouldn't stick for him.
22:07He's dropped all the way to 18.
22:09So that nine-tenths of a second gap that we spoke about, which was a void,
22:12has been filled by 18, 17 other cars.
22:16McLaughlin and Wincup, they've flipped positions for the second race.
22:20That'll make things interesting.
22:21This young man on screen has done a tremendous job, hasn't he?
22:26Armour or pole position goes to Scotty McLaughlin and to Volvo once again.
22:30It moves him to pole position number six for 2014.
22:35Wincup, Coulthard, Van Gisbergen, Caruso, Brighton, Courtney, Holtzworth, Reynolds and Tander.
22:41Well, Jamie Wincup, he's marching towards a sixth title.
22:44It would be four in a row if he does it this year.
22:47He joined the series in 2002.
22:49He joined Triple Eight in 06.
22:50And since then, we've seen some remarkable performances,
22:53including very special single lap performances for pole position.
22:57Let's enjoy some of them now as we go to the break.
23:02Jamie Wincup will come in and celebrate his first ever pole position.
23:07That is very, very fast.
23:10In fact, that's brained the majority of the field at this stage.
23:13Back-to-back pole positions on the Adelaide Street Circuit.
23:20Wincup goes to the top, three tenths clear.
23:24Wincup goes to the top at 56-3.
23:27Wincup.
23:28No.
23:29Oh, yes, he does.
23:30129-63.
23:33He crosses the line and gets his 40th career pole position.
23:38Hold your breath.
23:39Has Jamie Wincup done it?
23:42Yes, he does.
23:43Oh, we're heading into September.
23:52It's going to be a big month of footy on seven.
23:55A lot of adrenaline up.
23:56And there is also for this man at the moment, Scotty McLaughlin,
23:58his sixth pole position of the year for Armoural.
24:01We're setting up a big battle this afternoon
24:03in the two 100-kilometre races between Wincup and McLaughlin.
24:07An unbelievable performance.
24:09He moved the marker down to a low 1 minute 30, Scotty McLaughlin.
24:12Very, very impressive.
24:13So, here's the way they sit after qualifying for race number 27.
24:21And how's that time?
24:221 minute 30.3.
24:24Four tenths of a second quicker than the time achieved by Wincup in the previous session.
24:28Looking further afield, Caruso jumped in at the last minute.
24:31Bright recovered as well.
24:33Tander in that brand new car just at the bottom of the top ten.
24:35David Reynolds has out qualified his teammates at Ford Performance Racing.
24:39Chas Mostert just outside the ten.
24:41Mark Winterbottom continuing this very difficult run of qualifying.
24:44Townsville was difficult.
24:45Queensland Raceway was difficult.
24:47But what about Lowndes?
24:48Off the road, down at turn two.
24:50Maybe with some damage on tyres.
24:52Not good news for him as he continues to chase down the championship.
24:55Let's get back into the lane with Mark Beretta.
24:58Well, Jamie Wincup, congratulations.
24:59What a milestone.
25:00Congratulations on your 58th pole
25:02and overtaking Peter Brock's record for the most pole positions in the championship.
25:06Yeah, amazing feeling.
25:09I remember early in my career, I wasn't sure whether I could get pole position.
25:12It took me two years to get one.
25:13I thought, oh, maybe pole's not my thing.
25:15But I kept chipping away.
25:17I sort of learnt the art.
25:18And, you know, there's no greater feeling than the new tyres, new brakes
25:22on a nicely balanced race car and then just wringing its neck with an inch of its life.
25:26You know, it's an amazing feeling.
25:27I can't get enough of it.
25:29I'm certainly not going to compare the past to the present.
25:31I mean, that's pretty unfair.
25:32But I'm happy with the pole positions I've been able to get for myself and the team
25:36and hopefully many more to come.
25:38The other thing you can't get enough of is the armour or money
25:41because Paul Blair has worked out on his calculator
25:42he's paid you over a quarter of a million dollars in prize money
25:45for winning poles over the years.
25:48Hey, I condone good health and whatnot,
25:49but most of it's been at the bar, you know,
25:52at the end of the year on those team Christmas parties and whatnot.
25:55So certainly funded some really good fun over the last eight years, without doubt.
25:59Paul's got some more for you too, mate.
26:00Enjoy that.
26:01Congratulations on a milestone, Jamie.
26:02Well done.
26:03I appreciate it.
26:04And we're all pole position for race 27.
26:07Scott McLaughlin.
26:08Well done, mate.
26:08Great effort.
26:09Let me shake your hand.
26:10It's funny.
26:10Gary Rogers, as soon as he saw a cheque,
26:12Gary started sniffing around.
26:13There's all the team.
26:14Just an indicator of what this young bloke is like
26:16and how good has he got out of his car just then
26:17when he got pole position.
26:19And I swear to God, he walked right through the garage
26:21and he shook the hand of every man in his team.
26:24Well done, Scott.
26:24Ian, girl, well done.
26:25Congratulations.
26:26Great lap.
26:27Yeah, thanks.
26:27It's not only my effort, it's the team effort.
26:29They're giving me a great car.
26:30So I'm very lucky to be able to show what I can do.
26:32And, yeah, I'm trying to do my best.
26:34Six poles this year and we're counting.
26:35So I'm going to try and knock old Winkup off of his perch
26:38for the pole position award at the end of the year.
26:40So we're trying.
26:40Forget that, mate.
26:41There's going to be some cracker racing this afternoon.
26:42Can't wait to see it.
26:43Cheers.
26:43Can't wait to race.
26:44Cheers.
