00:00:32Now there were big cheers out in the team garage just a short time ago and this is why.
00:00:38There you see the crowd gathering to cheer off Craig Lowndes' car.
00:00:42Now earlier we'd heard that this car would not be right to go, they'd struggled to get
00:00:46it there.
00:00:47Well it turns out, a lot of effort, a lot of elbow grease and they have got this car
00:00:51on the track for the start of race 36.
00:00:53That is great news for Red Bull, great news for Craig Lowndes' championship as well.
00:00:57It's a pretty exciting time.
00:00:58Alright, let's go down to Rihanna who's with our champion elect.
00:01:03Jamie Winkup, you're inside the garage, staying cool and out of the heat on the grid.
00:01:07Now championship is wrapped up, this race is all about enjoying yourself out there but
00:01:13you want to win races and you're side by side with your best mate Will Davison.
00:01:17Yeah, from the TV it probably looks like it's pretty overcast but it's actually, it's warm
00:01:21here.
00:01:22It's probably more humid here than back at home on the Goldie.
00:01:25So no, we're just trying to stay cool.
00:01:27We've got a good car, a wrap for Will, he did a fantastic lap and a good car.
00:01:32So I feel like we're back in the old days, locking out the front row of the grid which
00:01:37is nice.
00:01:38But yeah, we've got to try to get away, weather's predicted, it could hit before the end of
00:01:42the race.
00:01:43So strategy's going to be key.
00:01:44I think we'll see a few guys staying out, so we're not really sure what to do.

00:01:49Okay, just joined Craig Lowndes out on the grid here and I was just talking to Jeremy
00:01:53Moore, his engineer, he said the car's about 90%, they reckon they'll get it at 100% tomorrow.
00:01:57And I know he's right, because I just looked inside the door jamb here and all the body
00:02:01wear is crushing it mate, you don't want to look in there Craig.
00:02:03But more importantly, that was a big hit pal, are you okay?
00:02:07To be honest, I've actually got sore ribs, so, and of course if you want to go in reverse
00:02:12I'm actually okay.
00:02:14But going obviously left-hand corners, my right-hand side's a bit sore, but Doc Carl's
00:02:19done what he can and hopefully now we can get on with it and see what we can get some
00:02:22points.
00:02:23You're in for a tough battle mate.
00:02:24The obvious question, what actually caused the incident, it was hard to get a read of
00:02:27it from where we were sitting.
00:02:28Oh, that's a good thing, I can give you any story you like.
00:02:31Look, now I had a good first sector, got through turn one, through the chicane, our data time
00:02:37was showing good.
00:02:38I actually just turned in a little bit early, clipped the inside wall and of course when
00:02:41you do that you fire straight across, so my mistake.
00:02:44And of course the boys have done a fantastic job though to get us back out.
00:02:47I've said this before mate, we love it when Craig Lowndes is coming from the back of the
00:02:50grid.

00:02:57You've had a pole position and a podium here in 2012 and sitting here in fourth place for

00:03:01Yeah, had a pretty good run here in the past.
00:03:04The car's been really speedy all weekend and I guess to a certain extent we got lucky.
00:03:10A lot of people, other people got unlucky in that first qualifying session, so managed
00:03:15to get a lap in there and in the top ten again in the second one, so yeah, a little bit different
00:03:20to previous years, obviously with the split first race to 125k, so be a little bit easier
00:03:26for us from the driver's seat, but yeah, hopefully we got pretty good race pace and we can challenge
00:03:32you guys ahead.

00:04:05Mark Winterbottom, the biggest talking point for yourself this weekend is that second place
00:04:08in the championship.
00:04:09I know how determined you are to get that and with Craig Lowndes having a disaster in qualifying,
00:04:14this is really important for you.
00:04:15Yeah, I just want to win the race to be honest.
00:04:18We'll be trying hard to win the race.
00:04:20We're not going to just putter around to finish second, but yeah, you want to finish as high
00:04:24as possible.
00:04:25So unfortunately, first place is decided and we're focusing on second.
00:04:30So we'll see how we go.
00:04:31We qualified probably better than where the car was probably meant to be in quali, but
00:04:36we've tuned her up, so it might be okay.
00:04:37We know how important it is for you, racing here in Sydney, being your home turf.

00:06:55Mate, you look down at the first corner, I mean, getting good starts, obvious.

00:06:58You've got to sort of keep them out, you've got to get up into the inside of the corner
00:07:02and try and hold old mate here and push him out into the dust.
00:07:04Have you got a sort of a strategy already in your mind there?
00:07:07Well, I'm on the new piece of tarmac.
00:07:09So obviously the launch is paramount.
00:07:11To be honest, the start is everything.
00:07:13And once you've got a good launch, everything falls into place for you.
00:07:15If you get a bad launch, you're immediately in the mirror and on the defence.
00:07:18So naturally, I want to get a good start and obviously get to the first corner first.

00:07:50he is a fit young bloke and this is our racetrack.
00:07:53Sydney Olympic Park, 3.42 kilometres.
00:07:57Average speed just under 140 k's.
00:08:00And down the run into turn one on Australia Avenue,
00:08:04250 kilometres an hour.
00:08:06And check the weather out, Crompo, because in the west, it's coming.
00:08:11Yeah, it looks pretty ordinary.
00:08:12And there's a very high probability of thunderstorms.
00:08:14It's been a pattern through Sydney in this past week.
00:08:16There was a vicious storm cell went through here yesterday afternoon,
00:08:20dumped hail on the racetrack around about between 4.35 o'clock local summertime.
00:08:25That's what the sky looks like at the moment.
00:08:27And we've got an easterly influence in terms of the breeze.
00:08:31But the weather's just sitting on the west of us at the moment
00:08:34at the top of the Blue Mountains out there.
00:08:36So we'll keep an eye on that for you and try and bring you up to speed with it.
00:08:39We've seen some wild scenes here in years gone by.
00:08:422010, when it was wet, we've seen those images many times.
00:08:45That's Scott McLaughlin on board.
00:08:47Got a whole variety of drivers, cars, cameras in every single direction.

00:08:52That's the snapshot of the points.
00:08:54Remember that Jamie's wrapped it up.
00:08:56It's a theory for him now to just get to the end of the championship
00:08:59and not attract any penalties and be officially crowned the champion
00:09:02and therefore a record six title.
00:09:04However, the battle for runner up is far from resolved.
00:09:07It's one hundred and thirty four points between second, third
00:09:10and fourth in the championship, and there's 300 points available this weekend.

00:09:19Let's have a look at it.
00:09:20And from the pole position, he's 17th in his V8 supercar career.
00:09:24It will be Will Davison, improved on that previous best fourth
00:09:28earlier in the season, Jamie Wincup alongside him.
00:09:30And then David Reynolds, season best for him.
00:09:32Bottleracing car number 55, Tim Slade.
00:09:34It's great to see him in amongst it.
00:09:36Season best also for David Wall.
00:09:38Wilson Security Racing.
00:09:39Then Scott McLaughlin.
00:09:40Rick Kelly later this afternoon.
00:09:42His four hundred V8 supercar start from Mark Winterbottom
00:09:45and then Fabian Coulthard, new Freightliner deal for those guys next year.
00:09:48Chas Mostard, the Bathurst winner from position number 10.
00:09:51Jason Bright, he'll have the pole for our next race this afternoon,
00:09:54which I suspect could be wet.
00:09:56Todd Kelly, it'll be his four hundred and fiftieth later today.
00:09:59Jack Perkins wants to go out on a strong note alongside his good friend
00:10:02James Moffett, Dale Wood, position 15.
00:10:04Robert Dahlgren about to say farewell to V8 supercars from 16.
00:10:08Then it's Michael Caruso and Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:10:11Shane was on a much better lap with a very quick car,
00:10:13but a red flag foiled his run.
00:10:15Then it's Perkatton Lowndes.
00:10:16So good to see Craig out there after that mammoth effort to turn the car around.
00:10:20Both the HRT boys were trapped by the qualifying red flag.
00:10:24And then it's Scott Pye, who's had great pace this weekend,
00:10:27but it didn't work out in that qualifying session
00:10:29because of the interruptions.
00:10:30Marcus Ambrose, then Russell Ingle with special livery this weekend.
00:10:34And Lee Holdsworth.
00:10:37Lee in the era of a century and those fellows
00:10:40have done a lot of very hard work to be able to get that car out
00:10:44all squared up and back on the racetrack.
00:10:46And it's the same story for that man on screen for Marcus Ambrose.
00:10:49Here we are with our pole sitter, Will Davison.
00:10:51Twice he's had a pole position here for Ford Performance Racing,
00:10:55and he's also been a race winner here as well.
00:10:57So he knows how to put it together at this location.
00:11:00One of the things that's curious about this racetrack, Mark,
00:11:03is that if you go through its five year, ten race history,
00:11:06is there is no pattern.
00:11:08So we've had nine different race winners across the ten races.
00:11:12Here's David Reynolds, season best quali for him.
00:11:15Fabian Coulthard, Lockwood Racing.
00:11:1915 last year's championship.
00:11:20He's currently sixth in the championship battle.
00:11:22And so he'd like to finish this year.
00:11:24Certainly the first half of it was super strong.
00:11:26If he could string together a nice run of three races now,
00:11:29it's potentially his best ever performance in the championship.
00:11:33On board was Scott Pye.
00:11:34As you said, it's been very fast all weekend.
00:11:36We've got 11 in-car cameras with all of the action.
00:11:40And the street circuit that, as you said,
00:11:41Cropper has just thrown up so many things for us over the years,
00:11:46the problems with a little mistake,
00:11:49the drama that we saw unfold with Winkup and Courtney in 2010 in the rain.
00:11:55On board now with Tim Slade.
00:11:57And if it is damp, we say it all the time,
00:11:59if you want great racing, just add water.
00:12:01And this is now Wilk Davidson just coming up to the line.
00:12:07A very important start for him because the run down to turn one is very wide.
00:12:12You've got to make sure you get the car moved over to the inside.
00:12:15And it is downhill.
00:12:16It's tricky to manage from the driver's seat.
00:12:18Many of them will use their handbrake or their line lockers on their steering wheel.
00:12:23That's a topic for explanation on another day.
00:12:25Here's the field rolling in 26 cars

00:13:21Problem here for Dahlgren, just got it stopped.

00:13:30Marcus Ambrose around the outside of Dahlgren.
00:13:33We said about turn one, that's how wide it was.
00:13:35Dale Wood went down the inside, made contact with Perkins, spun young Jack.
00:13:39Now we're down at the bus stop at turn six.
00:13:42This is just in that little run-off area there is where we saw Ambrose
00:13:45and Craig Lowndes parked.
00:13:48This is turn eight leading on to Dawn Fraser Avenue.
00:13:54And this rollercoaster ride under brakes into turn nine.
00:13:58Kiltard's having a battle with Rick Kelly here.
00:14:01Michael Caruso looks down the inside of his team boss, Todd Kelly,
00:14:05and backed away from it, but Winkup's made the most of fresh air.
00:14:09He's already got a couple of handy car legs here.
00:14:12Jason Bright's looking to make a move on Fabian Kiltard.
00:14:15Caruso again looking at Todd Kelly.
00:14:17He's having a bit of a battle on cold tyres this opening lap.
00:14:21Coming up to the end of lap one of 37.
00:14:23Winkup, Davison, Reynolds, Slade, Wall, McLaughlin, Winterbottom,
00:14:28Rick Kelly, Mostard, Kiltard, Bright, Todd Kelly.
00:14:31That's the first dozen.
00:14:34A reasonably clean first lap,
00:14:36but it was unfortunately a bad run into one for Jack Perkins,
00:14:40who I think got some help.
00:14:41Oh, a little bit of contact and a second touch there.
00:14:44That's actually displaced.
00:14:45Todd Kelly's been tagged by Caruso.
00:14:48James Moffat's in here.
00:14:49These cars are all owned by Todd Kelly.
00:14:51I don't know that he's going to appreciate the love fight.
00:14:55And there's another one.
00:14:57No, I don't know how many times I've said it this year.
00:15:01When your team-mates like that and you're running into each other
00:15:03in a straight line, it's just out of control.
00:15:06One only imagines what they'd like if they weren't team-mates.
00:15:10So that was an unusual exchange,
00:15:12but Michael's actually prevailed, popped out the other side in control.
00:15:16Carry that on. Let's try and stay where we are.
00:15:19There was plenty going on in the background with Van Gisberg
00:15:21just then in that back-up shot
00:15:23as they come out of that bus stop area at Turn 6-7.
00:15:26And there's the two HRT cars.
00:15:28Tander and Ambrose have been the real winners.
00:15:30They've got four spots each from their qualifying position.
00:15:35There's Courtney, Tander, Van Gisbergen, Ambrose.
00:15:38Big brake block in the background there for Engel.
00:15:40And there's Lowndes,
00:15:42who'll be trying not to put a mark on that car after the incident.
00:15:46No, that's not the way to go about it.
00:15:47There's no road there.
00:15:49It's all first-gear stuff, and Russell held his ground there.
00:15:53He snuck back up the inside in first gear and holds Lowndes at bay.
00:15:57Back to the HRT duo with Van Gisbergen.
00:16:00Remember, these were quick guys
00:16:01that just didn't get to complete their laps.
00:16:03They were all at various stages of their fastest lap of the session
00:16:06for qualifying in Race 36.
00:16:09That red flag came out, and they were trapped.
00:16:11Lifted down the order.
00:16:13This will be very good for Marcus with his run this weekend, Neil,
00:16:17because obviously trying to qualify around here,
00:16:19you do a lap by yourself.
00:16:21But when we spoke to him earlier in the show today,
00:16:24the race itself, you get into a rhythm, don't you?
00:16:26You tend to find your marker,
00:16:28hit the brake markers right,
00:16:30make sure that you can actually follow on.
00:16:32Right now, he's behind two of the very best operators,
00:16:34the Tandor and Van Gisbergen.
00:16:35This will be very helpful.
00:16:37Check this start out.
00:16:38Wincup's drive immediately in the jump was absolutely perfect.
00:16:43He got away beautifully, didn't he?
00:16:45So, controlled the wheel spin,
00:16:47just dampened all the energy nicely and left the line.
00:16:51Took track position.
00:16:52Was able to choose his line into one.
00:16:54He's got a wheel spin in second gear there.
00:16:58And this is the trap into turn one.
00:16:59Because it's so wide, it's so inviting to go down the inside,
00:17:02but you get pinched when you're down there.
00:17:07It's very easy to get caught in something.
00:17:08Here we go.
00:17:09There's a little bit more of the explanation as to what happened.
00:17:11It was, in fact, Dale Wood that cleaned bowl Jack Perkins.
00:17:14So, Jack had no role in that other than being the recipient.
00:17:17That's right.

00:17:24just having a bit of a bump with his team owner.
00:17:27And then Todd's big slide.
00:17:29He couldn't find the centre of the steering wheel

00:17:48and forces the issue up the inside at Turn 8.
00:17:51You don't get through Turn 8 cleanly like that too many times
00:17:54without somebody getting in strife,
00:17:56so they managed to resolve it between each other.
00:17:58And we're now with David Reynolds.
00:18:00This is the battle for second place at the moment.
00:18:02Will Davison in the foreground.
00:18:03You can just see Jamie disappearing through the bus stop.
00:18:06And a check on a couple of other key runners.
00:18:09Courtney is at 16th at the moment.

01:08:07I've really been looking forward to have, mate. So you've come out, you've done a
01:08:10race now, Marcus. Got a read on competition car. Plenty to learn. I reckon
01:08:14you're the big winner of this today. I reckon I really do. No, I do. Well, I certainly
01:08:18feel better about doing all these laps and, you know, I just put myself up to
01:08:22qualifying when I clipped the wall and, yeah, I was trying to be a good boy out
01:08:25there. I was following my old mate Russell and we had a bit of a stoush but...
01:08:29That was very cool. Yeah, the biggest issue was the window
01:08:32net kept falling down, so I had to keep putting that up during the race and, yeah,
01:08:36so I had my hands full there just trying to understand everything, just getting
01:08:38out new car gremlins and all that but, yeah, we'll pick it up here
01:08:42probably tomorrow and see if we can do better on that longer race. Yeah, well, I
01:08:46mean, understandably, qualifying hasn't been where you want it to be
01:08:49and that was always going to be the case this weekend, but having gone for those
01:08:51nine years, come back, done the race, mate, has the game, can you sense that the
01:08:55game's moved up? Without question. I left winning and I'm running 20th, so
01:08:59absolutely no doubt it's picked up and the car's very different, the way they
01:09:03set them up and everything, so I've got a lot to learn on just all that and, you
01:09:07know, I kind of feel like the car's upside down for me. Everywhere I need
01:09:11grip, I've got none and everywhere I don't need it, I got a lot. You sound
01:09:14really modest to me, mate, but listen, you're going to have no grip this afternoon
01:09:16because if this rain comes, you're on ovals, mate, you haven't done a lot of wet
01:09:19weather driving in the last nine years. I haven't done much road racing either, just
01:09:23quietly, but, yeah, look, it's just great to be home and racing supercars and, you
01:09:28know, once I get more competitive out there, I feel better about it. Well, once
01:09:30it was wise head on young shoulders, now it's wise head on old shoulders, mate, and
01:09:34I reckon you'll be absolutely fine. Good luck. You got it, thank you.
01:09:41Marcus Ambrose, let's have a look at the results and the margin in the end was
01:09:44three seconds between Jamie Wincup and Tim Slade. Best result of the year for
01:09:48Tim Slade, had a couple of third placings prior to that. Last time on the
01:09:51podium for David Reynolds was back at the Gold Coast last year where he was a
01:09:55winner, so that's a welcome relief for him. James Courtney got some valuable
01:09:58points along the way, a very tough run there for Mark Winterbottom who's in this
01:10:01big battle for second place. That's going to continue this afternoon and tomorrow
01:10:06because have a look on the lower left-hand corner of your screen and you
01:10:09can see how tight it is between Winterbottom, between Lowndes and Van
01:10:12Giesbergen, so it's just 101 points between positions two and four at the
01:10:17moment, so that tightened up from 134 points coming into the weekend. So look
01:10:22to the lower left and that tells you the the economics of it all and the numbers
01:10:26and then look to the top of the screen and that tells you the sort of deal that
01:10:29we're going to be looking at for the rest of the afternoon because I'm pretty
01:10:32sure that it's going to get wet here in Sydney and if that's the case, everything
01:10:35will be upside down. It was a good point that Mark Larkin made that for Marcus
01:10:38Ambrose, he has not had to deal with wet weather racing for a very long time.
01:10:46So coming up on our big show this afternoon, we've got the Dunlop Series
01:10:51race number one, that will be live and those guys always put on a mega show for
01:10:56us. Our champion-elect reveals his favourite pole positions and boy there's
01:11:01a big story to tell there. He's had 61 of them and then we'll have race number
01:11:0437 live this afternoon. Another 37 laps and looking forward to 125 k's and then
01:11:11after it, we'll catch up with all the boys, rake through all the chat. It's
01:11:15going to be a big day of motorsport on 7.
01:11:19What a summer of golf it's been. Rising stars from both Australia and around the
01:11:25world have built on their growing reputations with impressive wins in
01:11:29Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. This Thursday is the final event of the year
01:11:35on the Gold Coast. Royal Pines will play host to defending champion Adam Scott,
01:11:40desperate for more success on home soil. It all starts this Thursday and it's
01:11:46live and free on 7.
01:11:51We're loving the summer of sport on 7, so much more to come too and this
01:11:55fantastic race. What a day guys for Jamie Winkapp. Isn't that the mark of a
01:11:59champion? He is the champion-elect and he still goes on to win races.
01:12:05We said it in the race itself, he's just he's an unbelievable operator, Brett,
01:12:09because it's so important for him to do exactly what he's doing there now. He
01:12:13knows to win this race is the way he wants to finish the series and you know
01:12:18as champion-elect, he doesn't need to take those risks. He had a big dive at
01:12:22Slade, it was actually a good drive by Tim Slade, but you know you've got to put it
01:12:25in perspective. We're watching one of the all-time greats. Yeah, so many
01:12:28highlights from that race, Neil Worth, I mean that was action-packed as we've
01:12:31come to expect every time we come to this place. Guaranteed around this place,
01:12:34there's absolutely no doubt about it. Here's the highlights of race number 36, one that ultimately Jamie Winkapp did get the job done and we've
01:12:39seen evidence of him wanting to win before. Eastern Creek was the same
01:12:42scope, you made the comment on this desk earlier in the day, how about Jack Perkins?
01:12:46He can't take a trick. I don't know what happened down there but he ended up
01:12:48getting turned around. I think it was Dale Wood that made the contact and
01:12:51here's the evidence of him just scraping up against the wall on the exit
01:12:55of turn six, I think it might have been, for Jamie Winkapp and you pointed at the
01:13:01scratch on the car at the end of the day. For Mark Winterbottom, this is
01:13:03not good news for his battle to hold the runner-up position in the championship.
01:13:07It's amazing how that complexion's changed, hasn't it, because he was the
01:13:11front-runner coming into this weekend. Already that's turned on its ear. We've
01:13:14got Shane van Gisburg and now the front-runner for runner-up in the
01:13:17championship. Well, it's going to be an intriguing battle over the course of the
01:13:20week here between van Gisburg and Lowndes and Winterbottom and we've just
01:13:24spoke a second ago with Mark Larkham to Marcus Ambrose and you know that was a
01:13:29really good solid performance by him and this unfortunate here for Scott Pye
01:13:33just in the wrong spot at the wrong time with Todd Kelly backing him to the tires
01:13:37and as he resumed in this run from turn one to two and look at the distraught
01:13:42look on Scott Pye's face and his team boss Stick Johnson shaking his head
01:13:47saying oh what a shocking year we've had and this was the battle. As Wintcup
01:13:52applied the pressure that we've... he's not known for being an unbelievably good
01:13:57overtaker but what he does is he takes big risks and this was a big risk at the
01:14:00end of Dawn Fraser Avenue. He's got that rollercoaster ride and you see the
01:14:04reaction there, Krompo. It's great that those guys still... there's that level of
01:14:07vigour at this part of the championship. Drama here for Will Davison and what a
01:14:11what a shame for him when you consider how fast he was and what a good job he
01:14:14did in qualifying to start from the pole and then it looked like it's plucked a
01:14:17power steering line off it over the kerb and that's put paid to his day.
01:14:21Those super slow-mo's really illustrate just what a pounding the cars take
01:14:25around here because reliability does become an issue around here as does
01:14:29being able to just survive it from a driver standpoint. Remember they've got
01:14:32to do another 125 k's later today and 250 k's for tomorrow. The other point to
01:14:37quickly make here is that Wintcup did the fastest lap of the race along the way.
01:14:41He's good isn't he? Bumped into his teammate Craig Lowndes in the lane. He is wrapped
01:14:44up like the Michelin man with his ribs at the moment so that's going to be hurting.
