00:00What a place to bring our fifth spot of our fifth stop, I should say, the V8 Supercars
00:10Championship for this season, Perth, Western Australia, the continuation of the Super Sprint
00:16season, Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
00:181.7 million people on the Swan River and about 40 k's north is where we are here at
00:22Barbagato Raceway.
00:23Greg Murphy and Mark Scaife alongside me for this race.
00:25Our viewer vote, which drivers most likely to win their first race of the year in Perth
00:29everyone's going Volvo.
00:31Well, you've probably got to go Volvo based on his qualifying performance.
00:33What do you think, Murph?
00:34Oh, most of it, mate.
00:35He's been pretty sharp, though.
00:3635% there.
00:38I'm going to throw another one in.
00:39Russell Ingle starting third.
00:41Well, he's not on there.
00:42Let's not tell him.
00:43He's going to get angry with us.
00:45He will not be happy with the viewer vote.
00:47So our viewers are going with Scott McLaughlin.
00:50Go to the V8 website or vote via the 7Sport app to let us know who you think is going to
00:54get their first race win of the season.
00:55Let's head down to the grid.
00:56Time for the National Anthem to be sung by Rebecca DeGraw, a 21-year-old from here in Perth.
01:00Rebecca DeGraw.
01:01Australians, all let us rejoice, for we are young and free.
01:13We've golden soil and wealth for toil.
01:18Our home is girt by sea.
01:22Our land abounds in nature's gifts of beauty, rich and rare.
01:32In history's page, let every stage advance Australia fair.
01:41In joyful strains, then let us sing.
01:48Advance Australia fair.
01:56Great way to build up to race 14 of the championship here at Barbe Gallo.
02:00Let's head to Larco's proper race line with thanks to Penright.
02:03Well, let me assure you, we are going to be in for a fascinating race this afternoon.
02:10Both these short races, for the first time, we may see pit stops in them.
02:15In fact, I think we will.
02:16Not fuel stops, stops for tyres.
02:18Let me tell you why.
02:19This circuit, 2.4 kilometres of it, very, very high on what we call tyre degradation.
02:25The rate of drop-off of the tyre.
02:27We're not talking tenths of seconds, we're talking seconds.
02:31So what that is going to mean, if you want to come in and do a pit stop, put some fresh
02:34tyres on, by the time you enter off the racing line and enter back onto the racing line around
02:38here, it's going to cost you about 30 seconds.
02:40Do the numbers.
02:41In the race, if you're crossing yourself a couple of seconds a lap, 30 seconds through
02:44the pit stop, very tempting to put tyres on.
02:47But teams are very reluctant to lose track position.
02:50Do you give away the lead to come and do that pit stop?
02:52Where are you in traffic?
02:54Where's your team mate?
02:55What's going on?
02:56Very hard.
02:57And then amongst all that is that horrible thing we call double stacking.
03:00Double stacking is when two cars come in on a safety car, because you've got to use a
03:05safety car opportunity, but we've all only got one pit boom.
03:08And the car's got to come in, one car comes here, the second car is allowed to double stack
03:12and he's literally got to sit here while that guy gets serviced waiting for the guns.
03:17Effectively puts you out of the race.
03:19Now where this gets really interesting, this team right here, Ford Performance Racing, Chas
03:23Mostert has qualified in front of Mark Winterbottom.
03:26So let's just think about it.
03:27They get a safety car 12, 15 laps into the race.
03:30What happens then?
03:31Does Chas Mostert come in and make Mark Winterbottom stack there and do nothing, losing his best
03:36chance at winning the championship?
03:37Or does a young bloke get a go and let him have a crack at winning the race?
03:41Now you're getting into driver contract detail.
03:43I'm not going to tell you the answer.
03:44I know what they're going to do.
03:45You work it out.
03:46What would you do?
03:47Always keeping secrets, Larko.
03:50Lee Holdsworth has had his banana and his power aid and he's set to go for the third
03:53time this year.
03:54He's in the top five of qualifying.
03:56But Lee, the game starts now.
03:57What's the plan from this position?
03:59You've got Chas Mostert next to you for starters.
04:02Yeah, it's a difficult position anywhere along this grid to decide what to do.
04:06You've got to conserve your tyres, but also try and get track position.
04:11I just wish I had a crystal ball to tell me whether there was going to be a safety car
04:15or not, because that makes all the difference and determines your strategy.
04:19So hopefully the ball falls in our court and we take the right strategy.
04:25All right, Gony Lee.
04:26Do it for Betty today.
04:27Yeah, cheers, mate.
04:28Well, it's Chas Mostert's 12-month anniversary that he debuted in V8 Supercars.
04:32He's off the back of a really good result in New Zealand.
04:34And Chas, you've qualified first of the FBR cars.
04:37Previously, you've said that the team is working towards Frosty's championship.
04:42But surely the focus has to be on you for this race.
04:45Yeah, for sure.
04:45We're off sixth.
04:46There's only a couple of cars in front of us.
04:48And yeah, we're really looking to try and push in this race, try and win this one.
04:51And if we can't win it, get a podium.
04:53So Frosty's right behind me.
04:55So he'll be pushing me all the way.
04:56So hopefully we can just carve through the field together.
04:59Good luck for it.
05:01How good is this?
05:01Russell Ingle on the second row of the grid.
05:04Russell, this is an enormous effort for your team.
05:06You've got the nasal strips on, the fire in the ice.
05:08You're ready to go.
05:10Yeah, mate.
05:10It's an incredible effort, you know.
05:12A little one-car team.
05:14And we're up playing with the big boys, you know.
05:16So a great effort.
05:18It's just nice to actually be starting up.
05:20Because usually I'm racing my way through the field.
05:23I've only got two cars in front of me.
05:24So it's a nice start.
05:26Hey, the bonus you've got in pit lane two is you don't have to double stack.
05:29You come in, you've got the spot to yourself.
05:31Mate, it's a massive, massive advantage if the pace car comes out.
05:35Because everyone will file in and get tyres.
05:37You'd be crazy if you didn't.
05:39So, mate, it's just starting to stack up, you know.
05:42So who knows?
05:43Might get some champagne.
05:44We'd love to see that, mate.
05:45Really enjoying it.
05:46Good luck.
05:46Hell yeah.
05:46Thanks, guys.
05:48Fabian Coulthard, consistency is paying off for you in the championship this year.
05:52You're third in the current championship standings.
05:54You're second on the list for most top fives, starting from the second row of the grid.
05:58You're in a good spot.
05:59Yeah, it's a pretty good starting spot.
06:01So, you know, it's going to be a tough old race.
06:03You know, degradation is going to be very high.
06:05We're not going to have a great deal of grip a few laps in.
06:08So you're going to see plenty slippy and sliding.
06:10But hopefully we've got a good enough car to get us to the finish.
06:12There has been plenty of chat about pit stops and exactly what phase that's going to happen.
06:16Have you got plan A, B, C and D?
06:18We've got a couple of plans here and there.
06:20So it's picking the right one, you know, knowing when to stop, if you're going to stop.
06:25Obviously, the situation with the cars around you, who you're racing at the time and things like that.
06:30So I leave it to my boys at Lockwood Racing.
06:32You know, they do a fantastic job with strategy.
06:34So let's hope we pick the right one.
06:36No one's giving away too much information.
06:38Go ahead and get them.
06:39Cheers.
06:40Scotty McLaughlin on pole position for the fourth time this year.
06:43And, Scotty, you've been becoming pretty comfortable with this spot.
06:46Yeah, it's been great.
06:48We've had a good run, but we haven't got a race win yet.
06:51And that's what's killing me.
06:52So, yeah, we're going to go out there and just try our best.
06:54But, yeah, I'm mitching to get one of these race wins under my belt this year.
06:58Scotty, you keep one eye on this bloke beside you, Craig Lowndes.
07:01Yeah, Lowndes, he's always there.
07:02And he's someone that you've looked up to your whole life.
07:04And I actually found a photo from about 10 years ago of me and him.
07:07So it's pretty ironic that I'm lining up beside him.
07:10But, yeah, it's just pretty cool.
07:12Did you ever imagine at the start of this year that you'd be running so well this year with the Polestar car?
07:16Oh, I mean, yeah, it definitely surprised me, Adelaide.
07:20But, yeah, our goals have changed a lot.
07:22Our goals early on were about top 15.
07:24But now, obviously, we want to go for wins.
07:26So the car's unbelievable and we're just doing our best.
07:29And the boys have given me this gear to show what I can do.
07:32And I'm very proud and very privileged to do that.
07:34And Gary Rogers just gave me his goals for the weekend.
07:37He just wants three wins.
07:38Yeah, he's always like that.
07:40But, yeah, pressure comes from the boss.
07:41But I hope I can do that and I can keep my job.
07:43Good on you, Scotty. Enjoy it.
07:45And he'll be on the front row of the grid for this 42-lapper, 100 kilometres.
07:49Lads, let's have a look at where we are.
07:51Fifth event of the championship, Perth, Western Australia.
07:53Originally known as Wanneroo traditionally, but it's now Barbagato Raceway.
07:57Seven corners on paper, but you'll notice, Mark, that many of these corners,
08:01you're still turning while you're trying to drive off the corner.
08:03No doubt.
08:04And it's very low grip, which is why Mark Larkin made reference before about the tyre degradation.
08:09The car slides the whole time, from the time you put your foot on the brake to the time you finish the corner.
08:15These sectors aren't that important now, but what's really important is making the tyres live.
08:19And as you can see there, full throttle for only a bit over 40% of the lap.
08:24Top speed, 255 kilometres an hour.
08:27Very interesting racetrack.
08:29Soft tyre weekend.
08:31Mark Winterbottom, he's the man who leads the points.
08:34107 clear of Craig Lowndes with 300 on the line for the weekend.
08:38Fabian Coulthard has been in the mix.
08:39James Courtney, bit of a quiet achiever this year.
08:41He's been on the podium at every event so far this year.
08:44He's the only guy to do it.
08:45He's staying in the game.
08:46Everyone's...
08:47Ooh, they've jumped to Mostyn.
08:49They believe Chas on the viewer vote.
08:50They're with him.
08:51Ford fans.
08:51He's close to the front.
08:53I mean, his performance so far, he's been coming on so strong.
08:56The focus is on his team-mate Mark Winterbottom, but Mostyn is learning quickly.
09:02He has got a great team behind him, and he's obviously taking note of everything they're telling him.
09:10So let's have a look at the Fuso starting grid for race 14 of our championships.
09:15Scott McLaughlin, a great job.
09:16Four pole positions so far this year alongside Craig Lowndes, who's had 14 wins.
09:21At this racetrack, Russell Ingle, great to see him at the pointy end.
09:25Lee Holdsworth, first of the Erebus E63 Mercedes-Benz cars.
09:30And Mostyn, great job to out-qualify Winterbottom.
09:33Also, Will Davison, for both those cars to be up there, great job by Erebus.
09:38Dave Reynolds and Dale Wood, 9 and 10.
09:40And Dale Wood getting back into the 10 after that great run at Winton.
09:43He won a Dunlop Series race here last year.
09:45Garth Tander from 12th, the hometown hero.
09:48Jason Bryant alongside Tim Slade.
09:50Remember, they got together in New Zealand at Pukukoe.
09:52Nick Percat has been moving up the order in the last few events.
09:55He's alongside his Walkinshaw stablemate, James Courtney.
09:58Bess Nissen, Rick Kelly, 17th mark.
10:01The Elfers are struggling.
10:02Yeah, they wouldn't be happy with that at all, Noons.
10:03In fact, I thought they would go well here.
10:05Same with Van Gisberg.
10:06And for whatever reason, he just doesn't go well enough here.
10:09It's a style of circuit which I think should suit him.
10:12But the results don't show it.
10:13And the three down the back, Scott Pye, James Moffat and Jack Perkins.
10:16It's their worst qualifying performance of the year.
10:18But for Moffat and Perkins, their 50th round start this weekend.
10:2225 cars ready to go for this 42-lap, 100-kilometre race.
10:27Super sprint.
10:28But does it have a super pit stop?
10:29We'll find out.
10:30Well, that's the conjecture.
10:31There's a lot of people saying they're going to come in,
10:32even if there's not a safety car.
10:34Now, we've got 10 in-car cameras covering the field for you today.
10:39Jamie Wink up there before.
10:40Dave Reynolds on board now.
10:42Rick Kelly, as you said, we're disappointed with their outright speed.
10:46But their tyre speed may be better, Larka.
10:48Yeah, what's going to be really interesting here, mate,
10:50you've done it enough yourself, Scafie, is to start here.
10:53OK, pole position.
10:54Sure, it's on the inside.
10:55But we know the inside of the track is the dirty part of the track.
10:58The racing line on the outside is cleaner.
11:00We know these guys are both good starters.
11:02But if you can get on the outside and come round here through turn one,
11:06hang on the outside, you can just tuck in and get ahead at turn two.
11:11So now this comes into driver psychology.
11:13Scotty McLaughlin knows that Craig Lowndes is a tough competitor
11:17and will muscle him out.
11:18Craig Lowndes knows that Scotty McLaughlin is a fair racer
11:22and will give him racing room.
11:23And they're the little psychological tips that drivers need to take hold of
11:27to gain themselves track position
11:28because that is such an important aspect of what we do.
11:31Yeah, it's an important thing.
11:32Absolutely luck.
11:33And it'll be very interesting to see what happens with the jump here
11:35because as the tyre grip is low, the surface grip is low,
11:39it's more difficult to get the cars away sometimes.
11:42So let's have a look at this.
11:43This will be on.
11:44There's a total mark of 270 metres from the start line to get to turn one.
11:49Let's see what they can do.
11:50It sounds like a lot of time to sort yourself out.
11:53The reality is it's not.
11:5442 laps ahead.
11:56Can Volvo break through in the championship?
11:59McLaughlin on pole again.
12:00And Lowndes, the most winning man at Barbegello.
12:03They'll go head to head.
12:04New generation versus old.
12:05Russell Engel's ready to go as well.
12:07But the Volvo is slow.
12:09Engel can't go anywhere.
12:10Lowndes to the lead.
12:12Coulthard will try to hang tuck and go around the outside of turn one.
12:15Engel got the best start of the lot then.
12:16He had nowhere to go.
12:17He was totally forced to jiggle between Coulthard and McLaughlin.
12:21This is very close with Fabian and Scott.
12:24They did a great job to get through there.
12:26There's not much room there, man.
12:27There is no room there.
12:28We know how.
12:28The track snakes up the hill.
12:30McLaughlin and Coulthard still side by side.
12:33Engel's going to be the one that benefits from this
12:35because he's going to slide it behind the Volvo.
12:37Down into turn six.
12:40Coulthard's going to stay on the outside and try and get the drive.
12:44He's up the inside.
12:44Engel's got an overlap on McLaughlin.
12:47This will be good enough to get up the inside.
12:49He's up the inside.
12:50He's in the breaking zone.
12:51Great job.
12:52Holdsworth is making a move on Coulthard.
12:54Lowndes is clearing away.
12:55Look at them.
12:56Side by side by side.
12:58Davison is down the inside of Mostyn.
13:00Russell Engel.
13:01Great stuff.
13:02That was a sensational move.
13:04And he planned it well.
13:05He knew that Scott was up there.
13:08It's not.
13:08But Engel's move is, which is great.
13:11And that's a good move there by Holdsworth down the inside
13:13to get that job done on Fabian Coulthard.
13:16And Fabian can finally slot in.
13:18They can stop the firing outside.
13:19That was a whole group of the outside.
13:25But Lowndes' margin, 1.2 seconds.
13:28He's got like three free kicks in one lap.
13:31That had to be incredibly frustrating for Coulthard.
13:33He was second on the apex of turn one.
13:36And now he's spent at the end of turn on the first lap.
13:39So a big loss there when it looked like he was going to get a very good gain.
13:44That was mostly caused by Scott McLaughlin hanging in.
13:48And then Russell Engel applying the pressure at the right time to get this run.
13:52This is a great big roller coaster ride.
13:55Down to 255 kilometers an hour to finish the lap off.
13:59Good healthy battle there.
14:00With Winterbottom and Mostert, Dale Wood's done a good job to get to ninth also.
14:04Remember the subplot too.
14:05We just rode on board with Mark Winterbottom.
14:07This is with James Court.
14:09He's 14th.
14:09He's right in the middle where you don't want to be.
14:12He's got cars in front.
14:13Cars behind.
14:14Engel.
14:15Fastest lap.
14:16That time around.
14:16Let's see what the repair management Australia Commodore has got for the Red Bull car.
14:20Remember it's a triple A Commodore with the same engine package.
14:23Let's see if he can take off the man who's led the championship in the early part of this season.
14:28Early stages.
14:29Do you start to flick the brain already?
14:31Look after the rubber.
14:32Have you got it?
14:32Absolutely.
14:33100%.
14:33If you use them too hard at the start, that will hurt you later.
14:37So you've got to achieve the speed by getting to a number and driving it to a number early.
14:42And it's really, really difficult to tell your brain to not get on the throttle that fraction
14:47bit earlier to try and get a run on someone.
14:49We can see McLaughlin's closed up that little bit of gap.
14:51Oh, and Russell Engel.
14:53Lowndes.
14:53I think he's consolidating already.
14:54He's got that little bit of a lead.
14:56Wincup down the inside of David Reynolds.
14:58The last turn.
14:59Bright is going to try and capitalise on this one.
15:00He's going to get an overlap into turn one.
15:02And for Wincup, that's getting back to where he started.
15:04He lost a spot in that first lap.
15:07So he's P11 behind Tander.
15:09Bright and Reynolds side by side at one.
15:11And Lowndes moving away that time around.
15:141.5 seconds with four laps in the books as we go through now.
15:17And every lap it gets harder and harder to stay on the outside of guys in some of these
15:21corners like turn one or down to turn six.
15:23You just have to give it up.
15:25You do not have the grip to hang on and try and stay on the outside of those guys.
15:29Back with James Courtney, the Clipsal 500 champ following his teammate Nick Percat.
15:36Bright here trying to get a move done on J.B. Wincup.
15:39They're fighting on the fringe of the top ten.
15:43And listen to just how careful they are.
15:45This is on board with Reynolds in the bottle low forward with the watching brief.
15:48The run over the hill down to turn seven.
15:50And it actually comes back uphill, which you don't get really from the external shot.
15:54This is the highest longitudinal brake force of the year.
15:58So when you're going to apply the brake in the dip, when the road comes back at you,
16:02use that elevation to brake the car.
16:05As I said, the hardest of any place we go to.
16:07And you never think it's going to stop.
16:09Absolutely.
16:10As the tyre goes away, it right front starts to give up the ghost.
16:15And the brake pedal feel changes completely.
16:18Robert Dahlgren there.
16:20Having a battle.
16:21Bit of an overlap here as well.
16:23But he backs out of it.
16:24Lucky he did back out of it.
16:24Lucky he backed out of it.
16:25Exactly.
16:26Replay the start here.
16:27And you see that McLaughlin.
16:28Look at Engel.
16:29Look at Engel.
16:30Left, right, left, right.
16:32Nowhere to go.
16:32Made a bolt to start, but couldn't do anything with it.
16:35But Coulthard stayed on the outside for the rest of that lap.
16:38So there's nothing in it.
16:39You see, both those guys made dead starts.
16:41Fabian and Russell both made better starts.
16:43Look at the two of them coming forward.
16:45But the road's narrow.
16:46He can't get by.
16:47He tried everywhere.
16:48So Russell couldn't get it done.
16:49And then, as Merv said, Fabian's out there in the mulga.
16:53He's out there on the outside.
16:54He got away with being second.
16:57But this was really high-quality driving.
17:00Because McLaughlin...
17:01And there's Fabian.
17:02You see the wing of the car there.
17:03And they got through there together.
17:05It was very, very good driving.
17:07Very fast.
17:08And gave each other healthy racing room.
17:11And this is the fight for second.
17:12Russell Ingle.
17:13Scott McLaughlin.
17:14Hold to earth has made a strong start.
17:16So holding one, two.
17:18Volvo three.
17:19Mercedes-Benz in fourth.
17:21We're off and running in race 14 of the championship.
17:25And it's the chase for Craig Lowndes.
17:27He had a record-breaking win on the Saturday here last year.
17:30Can you grab another one?
17:31We'll continue on.
17:32It's lap six in Perth.
17:39It's Supercar Saturday on Sevens Ford.
17:41And Craig Lowndes leads the way for Red Bull Racing Australia.
17:44Apart from that, though, not too much is certain, boys.
17:47Because Scott McLaughlin is now second.
17:49The Volvo has moved through on Russell Ingle.
17:51Who, last time we saw him challenge for a podium, it cost him money.
17:55Today, he's looking a lot more solid, even though he's lost this spot.
17:59Yeah, and look, and he pretty much gave it away.
18:01He knew that he was holding Scott up a little bit.
18:03And at the same time, he's smart enough to know that this is a very, very long race.
18:08And there's probably going to be pit stops.
18:11Our numbers already look like, in terms of tyre degradation, that it's worse than last year.
18:15To the point where, even if there isn't a safety car, it is worth stopping and putting fresh tyres on.
18:21And we talk so much about the surface of this track.
18:23It was resurfaced 10 years ago.
18:25And every year we come back, it gets slower and slower and slower.
18:28And the degradation gets higher and higher.
18:30Just in the Pepsi Max garage now with Tim Edwards, team boss.
18:33And Tim, you've almost got a little dilemma on your hands at the moment.
18:35You've got the championship leader of Mark Winterbottom.
18:38And your young gun of the team, Chas Mostard, in front of him.
18:40When it's time to stop, how do you run that protocol?
18:44Well, if you come back in about, I don't know, maybe 10, 15 minutes, I'll give you the answer.
18:47Like, we've got different scenarios, depending on what happens on any particular lap.
18:51So, you know, if they happen to stop on lap 12 for a safety car, there's a certain scenario.
18:56And if they stop lap 20, there might be a different scenario.
19:00Or are they going to stop at all?
19:01Would you tend to favour the championship leader, do you think?
19:04Oh, look, that's an interesting discussion.
19:06I mean, what I can say is that we've got great harmony amongst all four drivers.
19:09And we're all working together as a team.
19:11And, you know, as you've seen, the way they've behaved with each other on track.
19:15And even in the garages, we've got great harmony.
19:17And we're a team.
19:19We'll watch with great interest.
19:20Thanks, Tim.
19:21No worries.
19:22Hey, Brett, I think Tim could be working at the UN based on those moments.
19:26There's plenty of action going on there.
19:28But I reckon you're going to see a change in position between those two FPR Falcons.
19:32As we look at Bright, working over 10, a little bit of a touch there.
19:36David Reynolds looking for an opportunity.
19:38And lingering just behind that is Jamie Winkert.
19:40But I reckon those two FPR Falcons are going to change position before pit stops come into play.
19:45That's one opportunity.
19:46The other thing is that you can still even, whatever the circumstances, whether it's a safety car or not, you can still call the other guy in first.
19:53So whatever happens, they will not hurt Frosty's championship.
19:57Now, the other part that you just said there about Bright coming forward, his speed looks good, Greg.
20:02Yeah, it does look good, but you can see the attitude.
20:04There's a little bit of a slide that those two cars had side by side.
20:08Him and Gartander out of turn six is just enough to hurt those tyres.
20:12It doesn't take much at all around this place to all of a sudden find that you've just lost that little bit of speed.
20:17Looking at the order here outside, the tail towards the 20, and all I'm hearing on the radio is complaining the race drivers.
20:25Ingle, though, he's been bumped off the podium here.
20:27Haldworth's in the gap, and Russell knows that there's another one coming.
20:30Koulton on the curve.
20:32Russell's trying to run it around the outside of the curve at seven.
20:34Race him to one and not have overlap for the move.
20:37And this won't be good when he goes to turn right down here because there's a Mercedes-Benz parked also on the inside.
20:44Will Davison, good job to get there, but he's going to just give Russell a little bit of room to get himself back on line.
20:51That was a good, sensible display of race craft there by Will.
20:56It does look like Russell's car is quite what he would like to have.
20:59I mean, he's not going to want to be giving up this many places this early on in the piece.
21:03So he's just trying to drive it as straight as he can, keep out of the way of these guys, not lose as much time as we look.
21:10Down in the six underbrakes.
21:11He's just run wide there because of that.
21:13He tried to give a little bit of room, and it just pushed him off line slightly.
21:17And we'll see that Davison clearly has got the run on the inside, and he's got two NPR Falcons in close proximity.
21:24And this is like the Fabian Coulthard does.
21:26Stuck out wide, one wide and one back for a lap because now Mostert tries to get his nose in the gap.
21:31Winnemortem's lined up as well.
21:33Suddenly, maybe he becomes seventh or eighth.
21:37And it looks like they've detuned that car too much.
21:39Russell actually had a big chunk of understeer in the middle of Colb, which is the corner over the back where Greg was explaining he ran wide.
21:47When you've turned the car in there, you've got to be able to hold the apex.
21:51Good move.
21:52Good move, Winnemortem.
21:53That was very, very good.
21:55And Russell doesn't want to give that one up as easy.
21:57He's still got a bit of an overlap there, and he's given a bigger push.
22:00Look at that.
22:01The back of the number five Falcon.
22:03He's gone now.
22:03And he's going to lose another spot.
22:04Dale Wood is going to take advantage of that little opportunity and get down the inside into that same spot.
22:09He lost that spot one lap ago.
22:12And that's Dale Wood, the reigning Dunlop Series champ who won a DBS race here.
22:16Murphy, you'll remember, last year for Matthew White's team now chasing the bright lines up.
22:20So the Brad Jones racing cars are starting to make their way forward.
22:23So what you've got to do is when you've qualified so well, you need to discern, and there's Lucas Dumprell, the owner of the team, you've got to decide as to how you set the car up for the race.
22:32And when they're reasonably short racers, you don't normally deviate too far from the qualifying set-up.
22:38But because this place is so hard on tyres, they've probably chosen to detune it a bit and make it look after the rear tyre better.
22:45What it's done is it's too understeery, which means it pushes too far wide everywhere.
22:50He has too much turning to do, and then he has too much exit wheel spin.
22:54So his move, his change to the car has not worked for him.
22:59We'll see how the rest of them run their course.
23:02Do they try to hang on and go the full race on this set of tyres, or do they go hell for leather and resign themselves to the fact that they'll have to come in and throw some more Dunlop's out.
23:11At the moment, Craig Lowndes leads.
23:121.5 seconds is the margin.
23:14The Volvo is Scott McLaughlin's chasing lap 14 in Perth.
23:17We've got it covered on the Megawall, Perth 400.
23:26With the VH Supercars Championship, Craig Lowndes continues to lead, but Scott McLaughlin's flying.
23:30The Volvo is eating margin.
23:32Pit stop time.
23:34Pit lane has a car in it.
23:35Will Davison has just entered the lane in the number nine, Erebus Mercedes-Benz.
23:40Tim Slade is in as well.
23:42It's starting to unfold.
23:43Yeah, the guys at Lucas Dunlop Motorsport, they've got two hands on a tyre that is sitting in pit lane.
23:51That means he's either standing there just waiting for the call from the engineer.
23:55I've spoken to the engineer.
23:56They're not ready to give up too much information.
23:59Clearly, Russell is struggling.
24:00There is no issue in the car.
24:01It's purely a balance issue, as Scaifey was saying.
24:04But at the moment, the two hands are still resting on that tyre, waiting to get out into pit lane.
24:09And on screen, our Castrol Edge kilometre count, we're at 38.7 kilometres of this 100k Super Sprint format weekend.
24:17So Tim Slade's been in as well in the Supercheap Commodore.
24:19He comes out just in front of this fight that I was mentioning.
24:22McLaughlin is mowing down the Commodore.
24:24Well, he's right back, as you can see.
24:25He's taking massive speed.
24:27And there's...
24:28I'm just checking whether that's Frosty in.
24:29So that's a great move, except...
24:32It's early.
24:32...that it might be early.
24:33Cool.
24:34Exactly.
24:34It's an early call, although it's already affected this guy.
24:37So Lowndes has already been...
24:39He's been mauled in the last three or four laps.
24:41That thing's got some speed.
24:42The Volvo is definitely looking after its tyres.
24:45A little bit better at the moment.
24:46Again, another four-tenths as Frosty pulls into the pit bay.
24:50So critical here to get this one right and get it done fast.
24:54Go, go, go, go, go.
24:55I wonder whether Davison put four tyres on it.
24:59It was a pretty quick stop.
25:01So we'll find that out for you.
25:02He might get down the inside here with this run.
25:04This is on.
25:05McLaughlin's been ripping...
25:06It's been big chunks every lap.
25:09And Lowndes won't fight him here.
25:10No use.
25:11No.
25:11That is strong.
25:12That car is incredibly strong still on this set of tyres
25:15to be able to drive underneath Craig Lowndes.
25:17Look at the numbers.
25:19And make a move like that after this many laps.
25:22The Triple Eight car has still got a bit of a struggle on the spot.
25:25As far as tyre life is concerned.
25:28And Holdsworth is still in the game.
25:30Kultar is still in the game.
25:31We haven't even gone halfway through here
25:33into this fourteenth race of the championship.
25:36Ingles in this time around.
25:37Perk has in and Rick Kelly as well.
25:39It's not just Greg Murphy was doing steering signs
25:42in the commentary box.
25:43Because Ingles...
25:45Sorry, Lowndes was running wide.
25:47We saw Ingles earlier run wide like that.
25:50And what actually happens is because it's so hard on tyres,
25:52it's not just the rear tyre, it's the front tyre also, Greg.
25:55Absolutely, I mean, you're just waiting for the thing to turn
25:57and then you start to get a bit of turn,
25:59apply a little bit of throttle
26:00and the thing just switches into oversteer so quickly
26:03and then you've damaged front and rear
26:05in that one small move.
26:07As Russell Engle exits the pit lane,
26:10James Courtney fires into turn one.
26:11There's a bit of a gaggle behind.
26:13Russell leaving.
26:15There's Jason Bright, remember he's been off the road,
26:17hence why he's further back.
26:18Onus is on the driver coming out of the lane to do it safely
26:21and not impede anybody else to make some contact.
26:23We've seen some dramas with that over the course of the last few years
26:26when this new pit lane facility was introduced to Barbagallo.
26:29Now Ingles got to get himself up to speed,
26:31up to temperature and up to pressure as well.
26:34Scafie, I'm at the other end of pit lane
26:36but interesting remark about did he do two or four tyres.
26:39I guess it'd be a big call to do two, wouldn't it?
26:41Because, you know, we're talking four to five seconds
26:43to put on four tyres,
26:45three to four seconds to put on two tyres.
26:47You probably wouldn't worry about losing that little bit
26:49amount of time for the sake of putting on four tyres.
26:52Now the other interesting thing here,
26:53two definite strategies.
26:54One, you've got to chase your mate,
26:56the guy you're racing with into pit lane
26:57and put on fresh tyres at the same time
26:59so he doesn't undercut you,
27:01get his green tyres and turn out some fast laps.
27:03Or the alternate that we're seeing happening out there,
27:06you stay out there now for quite a bit longer
27:08to have the real strong run home
27:10over those last five or six laps.
27:12Yeah, it's interesting strategy stuff, Larco, isn't it?
27:14It's amazing.
27:15And we're just doing the numbers here at the moment.
27:18McLaughlin's car is on track
27:19to be able to get through the race
27:21without actually doing a stop
27:22based on his degradation.
27:24He's 1.7 seconds faster now in front of Lowndes
27:28and has been massively faster than any other car
27:31in the last few laps.
27:32In fact, he's the only car still in the 58s.
27:34That hasn't changed tyres.
27:35Absolutely.
27:36And James Courtney has changed tyres
27:38as he's been through the pits.
27:39A 57.2.
27:41So that eclipses the fastest lap time
27:43from the first part of the race that Craig Lowndes did.
27:45So he's done a 57.2 at this stage,
27:48which is, you know, just over a second faster,
27:51I suppose, than Scott McLaughlin.
27:53So that's not a huge differential at the moment, is it?
27:55The only thing that happens is
27:57if you're so brave, you stay in the lead
28:01and you press on, a complete green race, you're OK.
28:04If you get a safety car,
28:06and whoever's there behind you on fresh tyres
28:08is going to gobble up and gone.
28:09And we've seen that before.
28:10Remember the Russell Ingle strategy at Winton?
28:12That was the case in point of how that unfolds.
28:15So really, they're treading water here.
28:17They're just keeping...
28:18Ah, now, Lowndes is in.
28:19McLaughlin's in.
28:20Holdsworth in as well.
28:21Yeah.
28:22This is called risk management.
28:23Yeah, cover him off.
28:25Exactly, because it's just no use
28:27if the other front guys have done it,
28:29you've got to go with the guys you're racing.
28:30Yep.
28:31Remember that Lowndes has a championship on the line.
28:34Coulthard's a title contender.
28:35Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!
28:37Not a good getaway.
28:38No, it wasn't.
28:39Behind you, but we'll get you out.
28:41Then I think you'll be OK.
28:42He had that little gap over Craig Lowndes.
28:45There's the AAA team.
28:47Going to work.
28:47You have to wait.
28:49Wait, wait, wait.
28:50Ooh, he waited.
28:51Go, go, go, go, go.
28:52Holdsworth.
28:53Gets out.
28:54There's Davison.
28:55Awesome.
28:56Yes, now this is the undercut
28:57that Will Davison's going to get them with.
28:59Yep.
29:00But remember, because he came in so early,
29:02he will also have his tyres,
29:04in terms of life, hurt for longer.
29:06And also Mark Winterbottom.
29:08And remember that he's the guy, Will Davison,
29:11who proved the master here two years ago
29:12and pulled off a win that we didn't think
29:13and he probably didn't think
29:14he was going to be able to do.
29:16And the Erebus Mercedes, remember Holdsworth,
29:18he had a win at Winton,
29:18looked after the tyres there.
29:20Let's see how it unfolds.
29:21We're halfway through.
29:22We're going to get a really good,
29:24really good idea of how this unfolds.
29:26Well, this is patience, too,
29:27on Scott McLaughlin's part.
29:28He has to be as patient as he possibly can
29:30because he knows he's got,
29:31what was it, six or so laps
29:32on these guys on tyres.
29:34He's got the speed.
29:35That car's very, very pacey.
29:36Albeit, I think Mark Winterbottom's car's
29:38pretty good, too.
29:39But he's going to have to be patient
29:40and wait and stalk these guys.
29:42There's still a long way to go.
29:43Richard Holloway will guide him
29:45through that Murph.
29:45He'll be saying,
29:46just go easy at the start.
29:48Don't hurt them too much.
29:50Buddy, you're going to come out
29:51in a bit of traffic.
29:52You're going to come out in traffic.
29:53So arms up.
29:54Arms up.
29:54Think about your bars.
29:55That's Adam Domore on the radio there
30:00to Chas Mostert,
30:01who'll come out just behind.
30:03Craig Lowndes.
30:06So his teammate has jumped in
30:08by stopping earlier,
30:09got the undercut.
30:10It's a few seconds ahead now
30:11from being behind before he stopped.
30:14And will he be able to run him down
30:16and what will happen
30:16if he does close the gap
30:18towards the end with those two FPR cars?
30:20Fabian Coulthard now.
30:21Andrew Pitlame was leading the race
30:23in the Lockwood cars.
30:24He's never won or had a podium here.
30:27Remember, this pit lane is very slippery.
30:30So Bridie pulled up a bit long.
30:32Try and pull up on the mark.
30:34Thanks, mate.
30:35That's Chris Clark on the radio
30:36from Brad Jones Racing
30:37through the Techno Autosports pit on the way in.
30:39Reynolds in, Wood in,
30:40Wink up in as well.
30:41So Van Giske takes the lead.
30:44Oh, that's tight.
30:45That's a little bit of a delay for Fabs.
30:47Yeah, definitely a bit of a delay
30:48as Reynolds came in.
30:51Wink up.
30:54Yeah.
30:55So Lowndes has now set
30:56the fastest time of the race.
30:58The 57.1.2 is a very good speed
31:00for Frank Lowndes.
31:01Remember, because he'd only did one lap
31:03in that qualifying session,
31:05he probably put fresh green tyres on
31:07to achieve that.
31:09Now, it looks like Coulthard's probably
31:10left that a little bit long.
31:11He's had a bit of a loss overall there
31:14with, behind both the FPR cars.
31:16Mostat's ahead of him.
31:17So maybe that strategy,
31:19maybe a couple of laps long
31:20and he won't probably get the gain
31:21being there's only a lap difference
31:22between him and Mostat stopping.
31:24McLaughlin moving with the Volvo.
31:26So the best car that's made a stop
31:28is Will Davison.
31:30Car 9.
31:30Just at the bottom of screen there
31:31in front of these two.
31:32But this bloke's coming out of here.
31:34Yeah, look at the speed.
31:35Look at the speed of that.
31:36To move ahead of Winterbottom
31:38that quickly after only,
31:39as we said,
31:40a five or six lap difference
31:41in the stop.
31:42To move ahead that fast
31:43and start trucking away
31:44after Will Davison.
31:45That's pretty impressive.
31:47Guys, Lounsie's going to be on a mission.
31:48He had a slow release
31:49as he was waiting in his bay
31:51to get going.
31:51Leah Holdsworth was actually
31:52out alongside him
31:53and the team are just so cautious now.
31:55They didn't want to risk a penalty.
31:56So they just held Lounsie
31:57that split second
31:58to make it safe and clear
32:00and as a result,
32:01he's been held up.
32:02Yeah, good point.
32:04Berets, we were watching that
32:05and we were actually a little bit surprised
32:06that he was held.
32:07However, again,
32:09it's all about risk management.
32:10You've got to make sure
32:10you don't incur a penalty
32:12for something silly
32:13rather than a one or two tenths
32:15per second penalty in his life.
32:17Here's the leader.
32:17Shane Van Gisberg
32:18and VIP Petboost Commodore
32:20qualified poorly
32:21in both sessions earlier today.
32:23He started 19th.
32:25At the moment,
32:26it looks like he's just going
32:27to keep going here
32:27and see how far he drips back
32:29because he doesn't have
32:30a fast car
32:30and his history here is poor
32:33compared to other tracks.
32:35Either that
32:35or he's waiting for a safety car.
32:37Well, he might be waiting
32:38a little while
32:39because we don't have
32:39a very big tradition
32:40of lots of safety cars here.
32:42I think 34%
32:43over the last decade or so.
32:45So,
32:45don't really get too many.
32:47And that's the margin
32:48that he's got
32:49in terms of what times
32:50he's doing
32:50versus Will Davison
32:51on the better rubber.
32:52This is Lowndes in
32:53and he just missed the marks.
32:58This is okay.
32:59This part was all fine.
33:00To get away,
33:01he had to pull up.
33:02And there's the burp.
33:03He just had to pull back
33:04in behind there.
33:05But again,
33:05that was quite smart.
33:06This now
33:07is for the effective lead.
33:10So much more pace,
33:11Davey.
33:12Good move.
33:12But confident
33:13that he can carry that through.
33:14Not just burning it up now.
33:15He's got 17 more laps.
33:17Look at all those rubber bits.
33:18The soft rubber
33:19peeling off
33:20on the run through six.
33:21I don't think
33:21he's burning it up.
33:22That thing is on rails.
33:24It's got no attitude
33:25going on.
33:26You look at the way
33:27the car is sitting
33:28on the road.
33:28The steering input
33:29is very smooth
33:30and very precise.
33:31And the numbers.
33:33I'd be judging
33:34my viewer boat right now.
33:38He's as cool
33:39as a cucumber,
33:40this kid.
33:42And watch the steering here.
33:43Watch the steering.
33:44Just how smooth
33:46that application.
33:48And he's just
33:48edging that car.
33:52We're going to stay on board
33:53for Scott McLaughlin
33:54for a lap
33:55at Barbagallo Raceway.
33:57Have a listen.
33:58A very talented young man
33:59in the S60 Volvo.
34:01Oh, I've got a bit
34:22of drama going here.
34:23We're just going to have
34:23to jump off Scotty's car
34:25because we've got
34:26a traffic jam
34:27at the Safeway car park.
34:28And it looks like
34:29Nick Perk is the one
34:29that's going to end up
34:30getting pushed
34:31into the trolleys.
34:32You call this.
34:34I don't know if I want to.
34:35Stand back.
34:36Oh, teammates
34:37and teammates everywhere.
34:38They're all bumping
34:39each other in a straight line.
34:40Dale would have been
34:41very happy to be clear
34:42on this.
34:42A couple of Nissans
34:43coming up behind as well.
34:44And we've got severity
34:45as he's 19th.
34:47He's not a factor today
34:48at a track
34:49where traditionally
34:50he's belted everyone.
34:51He's been on 11
34:52of the last 12 podiums here
34:53and he's nowhere
34:53near the podium.
34:54This knock them down,
34:55drag them out,
34:56fight us for 16th onwards.
34:59They play for keeps
35:00these boys down there.
35:02Oh, Miss Caruso.
35:03Steve Slade
35:03was Caruso's
35:04done on the inside.
35:05I don't want to see
35:06what I'm going to touch
35:06to Albert.
35:07I knew someone
35:08was going to emerge out there
35:09and I just wasn't sure
35:09who it was going to be.
35:10It is so...
35:11How frustrating is it?
35:12Just cannot get back
35:13in line and watching
35:14cars go past.
35:16Poor old Timmy Slade.
35:19It's wild stuff.
35:20And that offline
35:21gets worse
35:21as the race goes on
35:22because that's where
35:23all the soft rubber
35:23this car goes
35:24and it's even tougher
35:26to hang there.
35:30Sometimes this is where
35:31the best race of the race
35:32actually is in this fight.
35:34Way back where.
35:36We are in the car
35:37that blood runs.
35:38Last in the race.
35:39Tim Slade, 25th.
35:40Shane Van Gisburgh
35:41is at the other
35:42and he leads.
35:43Lap 29 at Barbegallo.
35:44It might just be
35:51a history-making day
35:52in the VH Supercars
35:53Championship.
35:54This is Scott McLaughlin.
35:55The Volvo
35:55is a rocket ship
35:57today here in the West.
35:58He's going by
35:59Shane Van Gisburgh
36:00and who currently
36:01runs second in the race.
36:02He hasn't stopped
36:03for tyres.
36:03Jack Perkins leads.
36:05He hasn't stopped
36:05for tyres.
36:06They're two seconds
36:07a lap slower
36:08than this Volvo
36:09which has made
36:10a stop for tyres
36:11and is charging
36:12on through.
36:12He's gone past
36:13Winterbottom.
36:14He's gone past
36:14Davison.
36:15He's in the lead
36:16and it could be
36:16the first win
36:17for Volvo
36:17since 1986.
36:20It could be today.
36:21I reckon that
36:21Falcon's got some
36:22pace though, guys.
36:23Yeah, he's not done.
36:24That gap, I don't think
36:24he's done here at all.
36:26I don't know if
36:27Scottie's used up
36:28a little bit too much.
36:29Got held up on that
36:29last piece of action
36:31there between
36:31Perkins and
36:33Van Gisburgh
36:33which is not helping
36:34as Perkins takes
36:35the line there
36:36in front of McLaughlin
36:37through one.
36:38This is costing him
36:38a lot of time.
36:40Look at the number
36:40five car.
36:41He is moving in
36:42very quickly.
36:45Yeah, he's definitely
36:45being held up
36:46pretty significantly
36:47there.
36:48Van Gisburgh
36:48and did it originally
36:49and Jack now
36:50and after this
36:51crisscrossing here
36:52at the top of the hill
36:52sneak down the inside
36:54he's done a nice job
36:55of that.
36:55If he just breaks
36:56sensibly down here
36:57he'll be down the
36:58inside enough
36:59to command track
37:00position and take
37:01this off him
37:01but as you said
37:02Greg, that has
37:03helped Mark
37:03Winterbottom by a
37:04long way.
37:04And these two are
37:05teammates here too
37:06so Mark
37:06Winterbottom has had
37:07no loss
37:08whatsoever
37:09getting past
37:10the gel
37:11with the car
37:12whereas McLaughlin
37:14definitely lost
37:14a little bit of time.
37:15And that's
37:16Holdsworth behind
37:16the number four
37:18Erebus Burke.
37:18Remember
37:19what a race
37:19at Winter.
37:20There's Kulta
37:21and he's making
37:21great speed
37:22at the moment.
37:24This is really
37:25interesting.
37:25Lowndes is seven
37:26Winkup is 19.
37:28I know
37:29but he's just
37:29struggling.
37:30Winkup's got no
37:30speed at all.
37:32Richard Holway
37:33guided Scott
37:34McLaughlin
37:35through that
37:35very, very well.
37:36He knew he was
37:37being held up
37:38but there's no
37:39use getting antsy
37:40about it.
37:40You can't pick it up
37:41and move it around.
37:42You've just got to
37:43make sure
37:43that you make the
37:44pass on whoever
37:45that is
37:46which was Jack
37:46Perkins
37:47and don't make a
37:48mistake to do so.
37:49So although he's
37:50at the front now
37:51he's actually moved
37:51away a little bit.
37:52He's almost a second
37:53clear of Winterbottom
37:54now and shows
37:56good pace.
37:57Mark,
37:58you heard
37:58Rich Holwell
37:59I just heard him
38:00briefly say
38:00eggshells mate
38:01eggshells
38:01talking to
38:02Scotty McLaughlin
38:03and driving the
38:04car here
38:04you've got to
38:05drive it like
38:05on eggshells
38:06and I think
38:07that's why
38:07Shane Van
38:08Gisbergen
38:08may be
38:09struggling here
38:09and in the
38:10past.
38:10He muscles
38:11his car around
38:12we talked
38:12about his
38:12great car
38:13control
38:13but here
38:14you need
38:14a lot more
38:14finesse
38:15light fingers
38:16you've got to
38:16feel the car
38:17you've got to
38:17feel the throttle
38:18and apply a lot
38:19of discipline
38:20in putting that
38:20in place.
38:21I've got some
38:21graphs
38:22actually some
38:22data out of
38:23the cars
38:23here.
38:23I'll show
38:24you in
38:24between the
38:24two races
38:25exactly what
38:26we're talking
38:26about in
38:27that regard.
38:28Thanks Larko
38:29we also should
38:29have a look
38:30get you to
38:30draw the
38:31surface profile
38:32of the road
38:32at some
38:32stage and
38:33put a tyre
38:34on it and
38:34try to explain
38:35for why the
38:36degradation is
38:37so high here
38:38because the
38:38grip level is
38:39massively low
38:40and it's a bit
38:41of a mystery
38:41for me where
38:42someone like
38:43Van Gisbergen
38:44who goes well
38:44in the wet
38:45wouldn't go well
38:46at a track like
38:47this because
38:47you've got to
38:48drive the car
38:48like it's in
38:49the rain.
38:49I completely
38:50agree with you
38:50it is a bit
38:51of a mystery
38:52why he is
38:53struggling with
38:54this so much
38:54because his
38:55car control
38:55we talk about
38:56eggshells
38:56very very
38:58smoothly.
38:59He has
38:59absolutely
39:00beautiful
39:01ability to
39:02control those
39:02vehicles and
39:03it doesn't
39:03really make a
39:04lot of sense
39:04being there's
39:04no grip that
39:05he's not able
39:05to do it here.
39:06Here's the other
39:07guy that's on
39:07the race winning
39:08scene.
39:09Coulthard has
39:10got a rocket.
39:10The Lockwood
39:11car has been
39:11making ground
39:12and he's
39:12closed in now
39:13on Winterbottom
39:14for second.
39:16Holdsworth now
39:17has got a deal
39:17with Chas
39:18behind.
39:19Look at
39:20Coulthard
39:20that's the
39:20margin.
39:21He's been
39:21ripping ground
39:22every lap
39:23for the last
39:23four and
39:24now he's on
39:25Winterbottom
39:25McLaughlin in
39:26front with
39:27eight to go.
39:28Yeah
39:28Holdsworth's
39:28just had to
39:29give away
39:29that spot to
39:31Mozdard.
39:31The Falcon
39:32very very
39:33smooth and
39:34fast here.
39:34Both of those
39:35cars showing
39:36great pace.
39:36The good part
39:37for Scott
39:38McLaughlin with
39:38this is he'll
39:39be saying
39:39go Fabian
39:40go Fabian
39:41because as much
39:42as Fabian can
39:43pressurise
39:44Winterbottom that
39:45will create drama
39:46for second and
39:46third.
39:47He'll change
39:47his tune once
39:48he gets past
39:48though.
39:49We'll be back
39:49on Team
39:49Frosty.
39:50But it might
39:51be too late
39:51by then.
39:53This is the
39:54run to turn
39:54six.
39:55It's good
39:55under brakes.
39:57Got it.
39:58Very nice
39:59move and
39:59very late.
40:01Give him a
40:02little rub,
40:03a little push
40:03up the hill.
40:04That's all fine.
40:04That's absolutely
40:05no problem.
40:05All that stuff.
40:07Sometimes we
40:07sanitise this game
40:08way too much.
40:10You should be
40:10able to bump
40:11and run and do
40:11all those things
40:12without unloading
40:14the guy.
40:14That was just a
40:15little bit of
40:15gamesmanship.
40:16If you want to
40:16be a championship
40:17contender, as you
40:18guys well know,
40:19you need to step
40:19up on the tracks
40:20where historically
40:21you haven't been
40:22strong.
40:22Brad Jones Racing
40:23have always been
40:24pretty good at
40:24Barbagallo, but it
40:25was Jason Bright
40:26getting the results.
40:27Babian Coutard has
40:28never finished on the
40:29podium here or won
40:30a race.
40:30On days like today,
40:32this makes me see
40:33he's more of a
40:34championship contender
40:34than we've thought
40:35him to be before.
40:36Oh!
40:37Rears locked.
40:38That's his old
40:39boss too.
40:39Wheels were locked
40:40and bang into the
40:42back of Todd Kelly.
40:42That was a wild
40:44moment.
40:45Todd Kelly's done
40:45a great job in this
40:46race to get to
40:4710th.
40:47From 18th on the
40:48grid.
40:48Absolutely.
40:49With the Nissans
40:50not going terribly
40:51well on the whole,
40:51he is the best of
40:52them and by a long
40:53way, the rest of
40:5420th, 21st and
40:5522nd.
40:56This could be
40:56interesting, boys.
40:57We've got the two
40:58FPR cars battling
40:59very close, nose to
41:01tail.
41:01That monster car
41:02stopped a little bit
41:03later than his
41:03teammate and now the
41:04pressure's on.
41:05What do we think's
41:05going to happen?
41:07Gary Rogers just
41:08diving into the
41:09cream cakes there.
41:09Is that an early
41:10celebration?
41:10Well, we've got a
41:11little while to go
41:12but we're going
41:12okay, Mark.
41:13You know what this
41:14is like.
41:14It ain't over.
41:15It's over.
41:15Going very well.
41:16Scotty McLachlan, I
41:17mean, we forget
41:18he's 20 years of age.
41:19His performance, he
41:20must make you a very
41:21happy race team boss.
41:23Oh, it does.
41:23Look, he's a terrific
41:24young bloke to work
41:25with.
41:25He's a little kid.
41:26He loves playing
41:27games and fiddling
41:28around but when he
41:28gets in that car, it
41:30is all business.
41:31He just drives it,
41:32gives it everything,
41:33is not intimidated by
41:34the more older
41:36experienced guys because
41:37he knows he's
41:38bloody good.
41:39Yeah, mate, you
41:39must be so impressed
41:40with him.
41:41Oh, it's great.
41:41I mean, hey, these
41:42are the blokes here
41:43that are responsible
41:44for it.
41:44They've worked hard
41:45and it's just great
41:45to see the team get
41:46the result.
41:47Get on you, Gary.
41:47Get on you, mate.
41:48Well done, Gary.
41:49It's been an
41:51unbelievable record of
41:52bringing young people
41:53into this sport.
41:54This is another one
41:54that he's been able to
41:56boast with young
41:57Scott McLachlan.
41:58Now, this is the
41:59pass.
41:59Just a second ago
42:00while we were talking
42:01to Gary, down the
42:02inside goes Mostert
42:04on Winterbottom.
42:04Now, this is the
42:05championship leader.
42:07Remember that he
42:08come in five laps
42:09before Mostert.
42:11So we called.
42:12We thought that
42:13might have been a bit
42:13early.
42:14It's definitely too
42:15early based on that
42:16performance.
42:17I'm impressed that
42:19they've let that
42:19happen and let these
42:21guys go at it and
42:22give Chas the
42:23opportunity to do
42:24his thing.
42:24So they'll obviously
42:25not want their
42:27championship leader to
42:27lose too many more
42:28spots, lose too many
42:29more points, but at
42:30the moment, they run
42:31third and fourth.
42:32Rihanna.
42:33Yeah, boys, I just
42:33want to highlight that
42:34Todd Kelly, you were
42:35just talking about him
42:36before.
42:36He started this race
42:37from 18th position.
42:39Very, very disappointed
42:40after qualifying.
42:41He came in for his
42:42pit stop.
42:43Two green tyres on
42:44the left side of his
42:45car, two used tyres on
42:47the right side of his
42:48car.
42:48He is now in 10th
42:49position.
42:50Who knows what we're
42:51going to see at the
42:51second race this
42:52afternoon.
42:53Yeah, I agree,
42:55Rihanna.
42:55That's a really good
42:56performance and he
42:57would have done that
42:58to conserve another
42:59two greens for the
43:01next race.
43:01So those tyres have
43:03been used differently
43:04than everybody else.
43:05Now, Jack Perkins is
43:06just up in front of
43:07them, so I would
43:08expect Jack to fall
43:09back behind Todd
43:11Kelly.
43:11So if Todd gets up
43:12to 9th from 18th,
43:13that's a great run.
43:14Yeah, but I mean,
43:14you remember where
43:15Jack started.
43:15So he started last.
43:16He hasn't had a
43:17pit stop.
43:17He is the first of
43:18the guys that hasn't
43:19stopped and he's
43:20still running 8th and
43:21his pace isn't as
43:22bad as what I
43:22thought it was.
43:23So he's managed to
43:24hold on to those
43:24tyres.
43:25We've only got
43:26four laps to go.
43:28It's a pretty good
43:28effort.
43:29And the other guy
43:29that hasn't stopped
43:30Van Gisburgh and
43:30he's now favoured.
43:31He's 10 seconds
43:32behind Jack.
43:33So this is actually
43:34all right for the
43:34gentleman forward.
43:35He's 8th at the
43:36moment.
43:36They're not swarming
43:37him.
43:37They don't look like
43:38they're just going to
43:38eat him alive.
43:39But if he drops
43:40only another three or
43:41four spots, that's a
43:41massive game.
43:42Still a net game when
43:44you start from 25th, last
43:46on the grid.
43:46This has been a nice
43:47run from the son of the
43:49Hall of Famer, the
43:49six-time Bathurst
43:50champ.
43:51But now he's under fire
43:53from James Courtney with
43:54Todd Kelly and David
43:55Reynolds lined up.
43:56Ingle is 12th, guys.
43:57We should update on
43:58Russell, who started from
43:59third and was strong
44:00early.
44:01Courtney down down the
44:01inside.
44:02And this is hard for
44:02Jack because he's one
44:03out and one wide down.
44:04Do you know our friend
44:05Neil Crompton, Marcel
44:06Marceau, he just said
44:08that Jack's, with his
44:11hands, in sign language,
44:13that Jack's best
44:14performance this year
44:15was eighth.
44:16Oh, no, right on for
44:17oh!
44:18David Reynolds.
44:19David Reynolds on his
44:20old boss again.
44:21I thought it was going
44:22to be three wide into
44:23the last turn.
44:25We got away with it.
44:27Yeah.
44:27So Jack's gone to
44:28tenth now, but it was
44:29going to be his equal
44:30best.
44:31With only three laps
44:32left to run, McLaughlin
44:33leads by 1.2 seconds to
44:35Coulthard.
44:36Mostert's on the podium.
44:37He's third.
44:37Winnerbot, hold to it.
44:39Lowndes is sixth.
44:40Then will they have to
44:41look at Jack.
44:41He's just hanging on
44:42for the next three laps
44:43here.
44:44It's a hard one.
44:45It's really, really
44:46difficult.
44:47You just want this race
44:48to end now.
44:49His teammate, David
44:50Reynolds, right behind
44:51the look at the
44:52attitude of the
44:53Gelbun Falcon.
44:54He's going to have to
44:55give this one away.
44:55There's absolutely no
44:56option.
44:57Those Dunlops are
44:58screaming.
45:04So for Craig Lowndes
45:06fans, he's currently
45:07in six.
45:08So just outside the
45:09top five.
45:10Started from the
45:11front row of the
45:12grid with Scott
45:13McLaughlin.
45:15And has not had the
45:16tyre consistency today
45:18to be able to battle
45:19for another win here.
45:22He's had 14 wins at
45:23this place.
45:24He's had an
45:25unbelievable record
45:26at Barbagallo
45:26Raceway.
45:27And Holdsworth has
45:28gone by.
45:30You can see there
45:30with those left
45:31times.
45:31And Winterbottom is
45:32on target.
45:33He's fourth.
45:33Just edge another
45:34couple of points in
45:35this championship fight
45:37from Craig Lowndes.
45:38But Coulthard is
45:38second.
45:39He'll get a couple
45:39back on Winterbottom.
45:40So it's still in the
45:42early stages in terms
45:42of the championship.
45:43But it's one of those
45:44cases that every point
45:45really does count.
45:46And the pace for the
45:46front two and three
45:47is within a tenth now.
45:49It's flattened out.
45:49Everyone's pretty much
45:50at the same level for
45:51this run to the line.
45:52But Lowndes still looks
45:53like he's got something
45:54left here for Holdsworth
45:55in the fight for fifth
45:57place.
45:57But this is back to the
45:58front.
45:59One to go across the line
46:00this time.
46:012.4 kilometres between
46:03Volvo and its first
46:04victory in the
46:05championship in just a
46:06lazy 28 years.
46:07That's fantastic, isn't
46:08it?
46:08It's an amazing
46:09turnaround too.
46:10I mean, they struggled
46:10a little bit at
46:11Pukekohe with a bit
46:12of tyre dig.
46:13The car didn't have
46:14the speed over the
46:15distance.
46:16And we come here to a
46:17circuit that has worse
46:18grip than just about
46:19anywhere else.
46:20And they've made a
46:20game.
46:21They've made that car
46:22the best out there on
46:23the track on a low
46:24grip surface.
46:25That's a huge improvement
46:26and a massive game by
46:27these guys.
46:28And, you know, only
46:29half a lap to go, as
46:30you said, to get this
46:32one.
46:33Futhard still pushing
46:34hard.
46:34The gap is one second.
46:36I'll tell you what is
46:37a bit monotonous now,
46:38Nurns.
46:39Yeah.
46:39Is this New Zealand
46:40gig?
46:40Yeah.
46:41Yeah.
46:42Yeah.
46:42They're everywhere.
46:43How's this McLachlan
46:43Coulthar gig going at
46:45the moment?
46:45Chas Mostad is best
46:47of class.
46:47Lunatic alongside us
46:48the same.
46:49I haven't said
46:49anything.
46:50I've said nothing.
46:51You know, I'm going
46:52to it in a minute.
46:53I haven't said
46:53anything yet.
46:54Well, final turn is
46:55coming up.
46:56The breakthrough we've
46:56been looking for.
46:58Volvo.
46:58It will be their day in
47:00the V8 Supercars
47:01Championship.
47:02You've got to go back
47:02to 1986 when they last
47:04won in the championship.
47:05It's V for Volvo and it's
47:06V for victory.
47:07Scott McLachlan breaks
47:09through for the S60
47:10in the V8 Supercars
47:11Championship.
47:12It's Kiwis 1-2 and the
47:14Swedes are on top.
47:17Congratulations to
47:18everybody involved in
47:20this project from Gary
47:21Rogers Motorsport and
47:22from Volvo, to Matt
47:23Braid, Oliver Peegum,
47:24all the people that have
47:26been so integral to
47:28getting Volvo back on
47:29track in this country
47:30and to win their first
47:31race in that time frame.
47:33It is just extraordinary
47:34the level of performance
47:36in such a short period of
47:37time with the S60.
47:38Great job by all the
47:39Polestar 2 in Sweden.
47:41Christian Dahl and the
47:41whole team to bring this
47:43together and to win five
47:46months into the calendar
47:47year.
47:47Bit of Kiwi speak there,
47:48bit of...
47:49Bit of bro.
47:49Yeah, bit of bro stuff
47:50going on.
47:51The boys, very happy.
47:52What a great drive by the
47:53young Kiwi.
47:54Absolutely superb.
47:55Turns 21 very soon.
47:58And he's driving like a
47:59guy that's been doing this
48:00for a lot, lot longer.
48:02Gary Rogers, team boss,
48:03former driver.
48:04He's brought up so many
48:05young guys through this
48:06team.
48:06Some of them haven't
48:07worked out.
48:08This guy's working out.
48:09He's definitely...
48:10You know, people are
48:10comparing him to Craig
48:11Lowndes.
48:11It's not just one of those
48:12flash-in-the-pan type
48:14headline-grabbing words.
48:15It is very much the real
48:16deal.
48:17Scott McLaughlin is the
48:18real deal.
48:19And Volvo have won 14
48:21races into their return
48:22in the championship.
48:23It's fantastic stuff.
48:24This young man drives
48:25well enough, Nunes, to be
48:27at the pointy end of this
48:27field for a long, long
48:28time to go.
48:29Well, there's no question
48:30about that.
48:31You know, his ability to
48:32stay so calm under
48:34pressure is something
48:35like, I think, we
48:36haven't seen in a very
48:37long time.
48:37Probably a Craig
48:38Lowndes style right from
48:40the beginning of his
48:40career.
48:41So, just a phenomenal
48:42road that these guys
48:44have taken.
48:45And this will be an
48:46incredibly emotional
48:47moment coming up here
48:49very soon.
48:50And congratulations to
48:50Gary Rogers and that
48:51team.
48:52Third race win for
48:53Scott McLaughlin.
48:54Remember, two wins
48:54last year with the
48:55Fujitsu Commodores from
48:57GRM.
48:57But this one will just
48:58mean something a little
48:59different.
49:00The first time for
49:01Volvo and to do it at a
49:03place where it's been
49:05dominated by Triple
49:05Eight and FPR for the
49:07last five or six years.
49:08They've broken that
49:09stranglehold and like
49:11pole positions.
49:12Once he's broken through,
49:14the floodgates open.
49:15Absolutely.
49:16There's so many people
49:17from Volvo here today.
49:18In fact, Managing
49:19Director for Australia,
49:20Matt Braid, is here with
49:21his contingent.
49:22A little bit of bro love
49:24there.
49:24Murph, you'd be happy with
49:25that.
49:25He can translate for us.
49:27Yeah, what did they
49:27speak?
49:28Is that some weird code
49:30or dialect?
49:30We keep it to ourselves.
49:32Oh, OK.
49:32We're very modest.
49:33Anyway, great job, Scott
49:35McLaughlin and everybody
49:36involved in this project.
49:38Gary Rogers and the team
49:39from Volvo.
49:41Extraordinary run.
49:42It was coming.
49:43It was coming.
49:44Yeah, it certainly was.
49:45And they've shown form.
49:46But that's a very
49:47emphatic victory today.
49:49And four different
49:49manufacturers in the top
49:50five.
49:51Three different
49:51manufacturers on the
49:52podium with Volvo, a
49:54Commodore VF and a
49:55Ford Falcon FG.
49:56It's great stuff.
49:57But right now, it's all
49:58about Scott McLaughlin.
49:59Berets, you're with
49:59him.
50:00Oh, you bet it is,
50:01Scott.
50:01Congratulations.
50:01You said you wanted to
50:02get that victory for
50:03Volvo.
50:03It's been coming.
50:04You've been edging
50:05away.
50:05You've got there.
50:06Well done.
50:07Yeah.
50:08Old mate upstairs
50:09wasn't helping me.
50:10Something went wrong
50:11with the exhaust and I
50:13thought it dropped on
50:13seven cylinders there for
50:14a bit, so it put me
50:15off.
50:15But the boys gave me a
50:16great car and hopefully
50:17we can bounce back and
50:18win the next one as
50:19well.
50:20Your focus when you get
50:21in the car has been
50:22just incredible this year,
50:23Matt.
50:23And what do you put
50:24it down to?
50:25How do you maintain
50:26that?
50:26I mean, it's been a
50:27rapid prime to the top.
50:28I don't know.
50:30Mum and Dad have been
50:30massive supporters of my
50:31career and my sister as
50:32well and they've kept me
50:34on my feet on the ground
50:36and I'd cop a little
50:39slap if I didn't.
50:40But awesome and I've got
50:41an awesome family,
50:42awesome team behind me
50:43and Gary Rogers, my
50:44boss, and can't thank
50:45everyone enough.
50:46This is awesome.
50:46Volvo Pulsar,
50:47Valvoline's first race
50:48win is fantastic and I'm
50:50not going to swear on TV
50:50again.
50:51Good man.
50:51And it might be time to
50:53ask Gary Rogers for a pay
50:53rise too.
50:54Yeah, I'm an apprentice
50:55so I've got a couple of
50:56away.
50:57We've got some silverware
50:58for you too.
50:59Please accept this as the
51:00winner of race 14 of the
51:01year, Scotty.
51:02Congratulations and well
51:03done.
51:03A great result for Volvo.
51:05Good stuff.
51:06Fabian Coulthard as well.
51:07Fabian, well done.
51:09That is an important
51:10second place for you
51:11because it lifts you up
51:12now to second in the
51:13championship.
51:14Yeah, it was good.
51:14I had to work for it.
51:16We pitted probably a little
51:17bit later than everybody
51:18else.
51:18But good job to my Kiwi
51:20bro, Scotty.
51:20We had a good side by
51:22saddle battle for the
51:22first few laps and it was
51:24a bit of fun.
51:25So credit to my guys, not
51:27only the guys here but the
51:27guys back at work.
51:29Lockwood racing do a
51:30fantastic job and pretty
51:31good strategy so it's been
51:32not a bad day.
51:32Well done Fabian.
51:33For you two, the
51:34silverware which you take
51:35and enjoy with the team.
51:36Congratulations, second
51:37spot.
51:38And to Chas Mostert as
51:39well.
51:39Chas, this is shaping up.
51:40It was a pretty super
51:41year.
51:41We're talking about Scotty's
51:42great year but for you as
51:43well, it's just been
51:44superb.
51:44Well done.
51:45Yeah, it's fantastic.
51:46Something with me and
51:47threes.
51:47I don't know what goes on
51:48there.
51:48But yeah, coming off
51:49Pookie and coming here and
51:50get another podium, it's
51:51awesome.
51:51Our car was probably the
51:52quickest on track so it's a
51:53bit disappointing not to
51:54get the win but yeah,
51:55ecstatic with third on the
51:56podium and unfortunately
51:57we don't get champagne so
51:58a little bit disappointed
51:59there too.
52:00Well, you just got to get
52:00on the podium later this
52:01afternoon.
52:02We do have the silverware
52:02for you though, mate.
52:03Enjoy that with the team
52:04and congratulations once
52:05again, Chas.
52:05Well done.
52:06Thank you very much.
52:07Mark, we're to one on
52:07fourth position.
52:08Good job, mate.
52:09A lot of our chat though
52:10today has been about the
52:11issue with Mostert and
52:13yourself.
52:13You know, you're after
52:14a championship, he's doing
52:15well, passing manoeuvre
52:16there, he got by.
52:18We're a little bit
52:18surprised to see that.
52:19Yeah, oh, he's trying to
52:21win the race so he was
52:23clearly quicker, he come
52:24in a bit later, had
52:26fresher tyres so I just
52:27pulled over and let him
52:27go through so, you know,
52:30there's no use trying to
52:30battle him.
52:31I want to see him get up
52:32the front and put pressure
52:33on the other blokes and
52:34yeah, it's not my team.
52:36Everyone's trying to win
52:36so I gave him the best
52:38opportunity then, didn't
52:39want to hold him up and
52:40he got third so it was
52:41good to see.
52:42Yeah, so it's pleasing
52:42from us sitting and
52:43watching the telecast, it's
52:44actually not as
52:44structured as sometimes
52:46we might otherwise
52:47appear.
52:48Yeah, some other drivers
52:49may think it's that way
52:50but we don't.
52:51It's every man for
52:52himself, we get equal
52:53equipment, you know, I'll
52:55have my day, he'll have
52:56his day but it's good to
52:57see him on the podium.
52:58He's a ripper young guy
52:59and he's a champion so
53:01he was quicker then, why
53:03battle him, there's no
53:04ego, we'll get third and
53:05fourth, it's a good day.
53:06Good on you mate, very
53:07well said.
53:07Thanks buddy, tough.
53:09And championship lead
53:10DeMarco Winterbottom,
53:11108 points.
53:12To recap the results,
53:13Volvo, Holden, Ford and
53:15what Chas Mostert said,
53:16that's his third, third
53:16place in the last four
53:17races, that's what he's
53:18talking about with all
53:19those threes.
53:20Both Erebus cars in the
53:20top seven, Betty
53:21Clemenco's not here this
53:22weekend but she'll be
53:23stoked to see that.
53:24Jack Perkins, it paid
53:25off, he got through from
53:2625th to 12th.
53:27Russell Ingle back in
53:2811th.
53:29Jamie Winkup, whoa, way
53:30back in 17th and
53:31Shane Van Gisbergen, the
53:33gamble didn't work, he
53:34finished last in 25th.
53:35Coming up, massive day
53:41still at the Perth 400,
53:42we'll switch it up some
53:43more V8s but it'll be the
53:44Dunlop Series, Murph and
53:45I will be with you for the
53:47first race of two for the
53:48weekend as the second tier
53:49series runs on around and
53:50then race 15 live of the
53:52championship, another 100
53:54kilometres, plenty
53:55happening on Super Sprint
53:56Saturday.
