01:02I don't really know where to go from here.
01:04It's very, very discouraging.
01:06She's going to die unless she makes some changes now.
01:10I don't want my child to know about a fat dad.
01:13I want my child to know about a healthy dad.
01:15I want to be able to live again.
01:17I can't go on like this any longer.
01:19I need it so bad. I want it so bad.
01:22Right now, I just can't deal with anything.
01:24I'm just so unhappy.
01:26I'm unhappy with myself.
01:31I'm unhappy with...
01:33It's just everything.
01:42I'm Mark. I'm 39.
01:44And I weigh 480 pounds.
01:49I don't want my child to know about a fat dad.
01:52I want my child to know about a healthy dad.
01:54It's a girl.
01:55It's a girl?
01:56One of the things about being so big
02:00is that you miss out on a great deal.
02:03And I don't want to miss out on it anymore.
02:05I mean, that's what we're dealing with.
02:07I had to move my fat out of the way
02:10to be able to do stuff.
02:13So that's me, and I got to lose this.
02:19I don't want to miss out on playing with my baby.
02:22Wow.
02:22And Jackie needs to have a partner, and Jackie needs to have a partner who is able to do the things that need to be done.
02:29The excuse of, well, I'm just tired just doesn't work when you have a child.
02:31I mean, you've got to be there.
02:33Oh, my God, this food is so great.
02:35I started putting on weight while I was in the Army, and they were looking to start doing some downsizing anyway.
02:40So the easiest way for me to get out was to take a medical discharge, and the medical discharge was because I was fat.
02:45I look at that period of my life as an absolute failure.
02:49My father just passed away in 2008.
02:52We were really close, and I just don't want our child to have to, you know, I want them to have their dad.
02:59And I want them to, you know, I want him to walk her down the aisle.
03:05I didn't get to have that.
03:07I want him to be there and be the best dad that he can.
03:12Sorry.
03:13You don't want to hear that stuff from people.
03:16I'm afraid you're going to die.
03:19All right, you're all packed.
03:21Yep.
03:22This six months is about my child and my wife.
03:25I want to give Jackie a better life than what we have right now.
03:32My name is Patty.
03:34I'm 59 years old.
03:38I weighed 88 pounds when I got married at 17.
03:43My weight problem didn't start until the death of my son.
03:48He was 23 years old.
03:49I think we all turned to food after Nick died.
03:59Mmm, yummy.
04:00Can we pull the table to me because I can't get to it?
04:04Yes, thank you.
04:05Food is comfort.
04:07Food is love.
04:08Pasta salad, please.
04:09Food is always there.
04:11Food never, ever lets you down.
04:14But I feel like I've eaten myself into a chair.
04:19I want to lose all this.
04:20I need to lose all this.
04:22My arms are fit here, believe it or not.
04:25And all this.
04:27All right, now, I can try to get down.
04:30You see how hard it is?
04:32Getting up is way, way harder.
04:33I want to hold my grandkids' hands.
04:36I want to walk and hold their hands.
04:38I've missed so much since they were babies.
04:41Yeah, family.
04:42I see you in a little bit.
04:43Hey, where you going?
04:44I know she thinks I don't love her as much as I used to
04:47because I don't come around very often, you know?
04:52And it's not true.
04:53I just can't see her like this.
04:55You know, I just can't.
04:57I'm so sorry I got this right.
04:59I'm so sorry.
05:00I'm so ashamed.
05:01Oh, my God.
05:02I want my independence back.
05:22Hi, how are you?
05:23Good, how are you?
05:25Today, Mark and Patty are taking the first steps
05:27in reclaiming their lives.
05:29This is your name tag that we ask that you wear
05:31the whole time that you're here.
05:32Beverly Perfect's going to take you around.
05:35Okay, thanks, Allison.
05:35Thank you, welcome.
05:36I think that people come here primarily
05:38with a focus on losing weight.
05:41But to accomplish that long-term goal,
05:43it's about developing the lifestyles
05:45that will ultimately sustain it.
05:48Weight follows behavior,
05:50and in six months,
05:51a lot of behavioral change can occur.
05:53We're going to get you over to your villa.
05:55Cool.
05:56So I have some specific fitness goals.
05:58Okay.
05:58My hometown is having its very first half marathon.
06:02Oh, my gosh.
06:04Really?
06:04Yeah.
06:05And, uh...
06:06So don't tell me.
06:07You want to do the half marathon?
06:09I do.
06:09I do.
06:10When Mark told me that he wanted to run a half marathon,
06:14there is no way he's going to be able to...
06:16Does he even understand what a half marathon is?
06:21God.
06:21You all right?
06:24Yeah.
06:25Want me to grab your suitcase for a while?
06:27No, I got it.
06:27Are you sure?
06:28Yep.
06:28He can't even run right now.
06:30He can't even jog right now.
06:31He's going to have to start walking miles a day.
06:35Just start walking.
06:38Because right now,
06:39he can't even make it to his villa.
06:40Hey, Patty.
06:48Hi, Bob.
06:48How are you doing?
06:49I'm good, thank you.
06:50My first weigh-in at the facility here,
06:53I really was scared.
06:54It seems like I eat all day sometimes.
06:57You want to get a reference point for that weight,
06:58so let's have you step up on a scale there.
07:00Your starting weight is 312.8 pounds.
07:12Looking at that, what do you think?
07:13Is that about where you thought you were?
07:15Yeah, I lost a couple pounds.
07:19Don't underestimate the value of every loss.
07:21If you're moving in the right direction,
07:22we're happy about that.
07:24Oh, boy.
07:25I've got 200 pounds to lose.
07:28How the heck am I going to do this?
07:54One of the things you've probably heard before
07:56is this BMI.
07:57I am two-thirds fat.
07:59It's somewhat similar to percent body fat,
08:02but it's not exactly the same.
08:03It's about right,
08:03because I weigh three times what I should weigh.
08:06There's a body with 200 pounds of fat on it.
08:08Now, here's the good news.
08:10When people lose a relatively small amount
08:13of their total weight,
08:13their health improves fairly dramatically.
08:16Okay.
08:17That first 10, 15, 20%
08:19is going to make a big difference in your health.
08:21I think it'll make a big difference in your mobility,
08:24and that's what we're moving towards.
08:25Great.
08:25Hey, Mark, how you doing?
08:30Good, Bob.
08:31Good.
08:31Good to see you.
08:32All right.
08:32All right, so this is the fun part.
08:33We're going to have you step on the scale,
08:35and see what we got.
08:36That was my weight back in August.
08:48I thought I'd lost some.
08:51Wow.
08:51The last time I'd weighed myself,
08:53I was well under 500 pounds.
08:55Sometimes people can creep up and not know it,
08:57and you want to catch this, you know, on the way up.
08:59Okay.
08:59I was devastated.
09:01How did that happen?
09:03All right, just a little stick here.
09:07Just put a little pressure on there for me.
09:10There you go.
09:10I don't know if you know much about diabetes.
09:25Diabetes is an insidious, diabolical, and nasty disease.
09:29It is a disease that you don't want.
09:31I mean, there's a lot of things that are being to stack up,
09:34and you're really getting at this
09:36before you've got the serious consequences of these issues.
09:42You're killing yourself, man.
09:44You know, you've got to do something better
09:46and be there for my wife and my child.
09:48I started really seriously thinking about my weight loss.
09:51You may be concerned about your ability
10:00to participate in our fitness program.
10:02It is a challenging program,
10:03and if you haven't been exercising regularly before you came,
10:06you might wonder, can you do it?
10:08And the fact of the matter is that you can.
10:10This is a really exciting time
10:12because in these first few days of the program,
10:14we're going to push them to their limits.
10:16Okay, please start it slow.
10:17I'll start it slow.
10:18When Adam took me into the weight room,
10:20I felt overwhelmed.
10:23Are you ready?
10:24Scared, no.
10:25All right.
10:25Oh, my gosh.
10:26How am I going to do this?
10:28I'm starting now.
10:28All right.
10:29Pick it up a little bit.
10:30Whoa.
10:31There you go.
10:32Oh, my God.
10:32Oh, my God.
10:33Oh, my God.
10:35Holy mother of Mary.
10:37Is that too fast?
10:38How are you feeling?
10:39Just 30.
10:40Look.
10:40Just don't go anywhere.
10:41You're already at 17.
10:43Longer strides.
10:44Lengthen that stride a little bit.
10:46One by one,
10:47he showed me all the things that I can do.
10:50You're going to be lifting them out to the side
10:52and back down.
10:52Okay.
10:53Okay?
10:53Like this.
10:54Exactly.
10:55Okay.
10:55And it was so less intimidating.
11:00Work.
11:01I love it, guys.
11:02You're doing great.
11:03Lower.
11:04Six.
11:04There.
11:05That's what I'm talking about.
11:06Chest up tall.
11:06You've got to straighten your back out.
11:07Good.
11:08Use those quads, though.
11:09I want you to push up for your heels,
11:10not your toes.
11:11Okay.
11:11You're going to crush my fingers.
11:12There you go.
11:12Good.
11:13Keep the weight in the heel of that front foot.
11:14That's perfect.
11:1516.
11:17I know you want it.
11:18One more.
11:1817.
11:2018.
11:21Use that core.
11:22That's it.
11:22I don't have a core.
11:24Nine.
11:24Yes, you do.
11:25Oh, I'm like...
11:25It's there.
11:26I'm telling you.
11:27I don't have a core.
11:27Ten.
11:27That's it.
11:27Good.
11:28Good job.
11:28Relax.
11:29Oh, my God.
11:32Good work.
11:33Oh, my God.
11:34My thighs.
11:34You feeling burning?
11:35My thighs are burning.
11:37Cool down.
11:37Catch your breaths.
11:38One of the concerns that most people have
11:52is that they're going to be on an aggressive,
11:54pretty low-calorie plan, about 1,200 calories.
11:56What seaweed tastes like, I wonder.
11:58Ultimately, what food is
12:00and what it's supposed to be is fuel.
12:01I'm counting calories in my head.
12:03It can provide pleasure.
12:04It can provide lots of things,
12:06but basically, that's what it is.
12:07It's fuel.
12:08Bend your knee a little bit.
12:13There you go.
12:14The biggest benefits of strength training
12:16are your ability just to move naturally
12:18throughout the course of the day without pain.
12:20I don't want there to be any pain.
12:22They always hurt.
12:24But it's...
12:24Yeah, it's not...
12:25But is it our mild tomorrow?
12:26Yeah, yes.
12:32I figured that I would be working out a lot.
12:34Come on!
12:36Good!
12:36But that first week was intense.
12:39Come on!
12:39Take it out!
12:40Take it out!
12:41Take it out!
12:41I've never worked out so hard.
12:43Take it out, Bart!
12:44Hi, Patty.
12:50Hi, Adam.
12:50Are you excited?
12:51Yeah.
12:52Nervous?
12:53Scared, too.
12:54Oh, boy.
13:04All right!
13:05That's great.
13:06That's great.
13:06No!
13:07Are you kidding?
13:08That's great.
13:09Are you kidding?
13:09No, I'm not kidding.
13:10Ah!
13:11Oh, my God!
13:12That's great.
13:13When I saw 303 on the scale, I was thinking, this can't be.
13:19I didn't do this.
13:21Oh, my gosh.
13:22It's going to get better, right?
13:23Yeah!
13:24The more you keep moving, the more you're doing.
13:25Oh, I'm shocked.
13:26I thought it was going to be, like, two or three pounds.
13:28For myself, I was ecstatic.
13:30I thought that was great.
13:35Morning, Mark.
13:36How you doing, man?
13:37You ready?
13:38Yeah.
13:38My initial weigh-in was quite shocking.
13:42I was like, wow, really?
13:43How did that happen?
13:45All right, let's see it.
13:46One week down.
13:47One week.
13:56That's 30 pounds.
13:59I lost freaking 30 pounds.
14:02Man.
14:03That's awesome.
14:04Holy crap.
14:0630 pounds.
14:0830.
14:09I've never lost 30 pounds in a week.
14:10I don't think, I didn't think that was possible.
14:13Woo!
14:14I left the 500s, and I skipped the 490s altogether.
14:1730 pounds!
14:18All right, man.
14:19Good job.
14:20That's great.
14:21Way to go.
14:22Holy.
14:23Oh!
14:24For Mark to lose 30 pounds this week,
14:26it's sort of an amazing accomplishment.
14:28But he needs to understand that a lot of that is water weight,
14:30and that's good.
14:31He didn't need to be carrying that much water weight around.
14:3330 pounds.
14:35But he certainly can't expect this kind of weight loss
14:38every week.
14:38even though I was really happy I hit that goal, I really wanted to push myself physically.
14:46Because it would be so easy to be like, yeah, I lost 30 pounds.
14:48But in the grand scheme of things, it's just the beginning, you know, and that I want to keep that momentum going.
15:01Holy cow, you're going fast today.
15:03This is the fastest you've gone yet, Mark.
15:06I feel such a positive change in myself just by what I've learned and what I'm eating.
15:10I have more energy than I ever had before.
15:13Here we go.
15:14Yeah.
15:15Oh my God, I can't even keep up with you.
15:16You're so fast.
15:17There's this half marathon that I'm going to participate in at home.
15:19In my head, as I cross the finish line, there were my friends, there's my wife, and I get a big kiss and a big hug from everybody.
15:39Mark is a man with a mission. He's got a new baby on the way.
15:55Eu sei.
15:56É extremamente difícil de se pair com alguém
15:59que é sempre que vai, vai, vai.
16:01Quando minha mente e minha mente estão dizendo
16:04stop, stop, stop.
16:05Slow down, slow down.
16:12O que é isso?
16:22A grocery store?
16:25Confronting our demons.
16:27Nós não temos que esperar até que nós estamos em casa.
16:29Esse é o momento perfecto para praticar.
16:33Quando você vai em hoje,
16:35escolha 10 coisas.
16:37Eu quero que você use sua imaginação
16:39e pretende que você pode ser sad
16:42ou anxious
16:44ou getting ready to binge.
16:49Isso.
16:50Do they have hot dogs?
16:52Yeah, there they are.
16:53Geez.
16:54I need, like, a block of cheese.
16:56Do you guys have fried chicken here?
16:57These are the biggest tortillas they have.
17:00Oh, you gotta get the chocolate rainbows.
17:03How you doing?
17:04Not good.
17:05Okay.
17:06Uh, if we had to pick one out of those,
17:11pick any one, it doesn't matter.
17:12It would be the hot dogs.
17:14Okay.
17:15Hot dogs.
17:16Can you see on there how many servings there are?
17:20One hot dog is one serving.
17:22One serving.
17:23Alright.
17:24And how many calories per serving?
17:26180.
17:27180.
17:28Now, how many would you have?
17:30I would eat the whole thing.
17:31You would eat the whole thing.
17:32Okay.
17:33You would eat the whole thing.
17:34So, eight times what?
17:35It's 1440 calories.
17:381440 calories.
17:39Okay.
17:40Patty, let me give this to you.
17:46How many servings there?
17:48Eight.
17:49How many calories would that be?
17:51290 for one donut.
17:53For one donut.
17:54How many would you have, do you think?
17:56I'd eat the whole box.
17:58Okay.
17:59Easily.
18:00So, what's one of your goals?
18:02I want to run a half marathon.
18:03And Patty, who do you want to spend time with?
18:06My grandkids.
18:07Your grandchildren.
18:08And what do you want to do with your grandchildren?
18:10Run and play.
18:11Run and play?
18:13Even just walk and hold their hands.
18:16Okay.
18:17It's like picking food over my grandkids.
18:20I can't do that.
18:21Like what, Patty?
18:23What, Patty?
18:24It's like I've been picking food over my grandkids.
18:28I can't do that.
18:29Mm-hmm.
18:30It's horrifying.
18:31Oh, my God.
18:33Oh, my God.
18:34Mm.
18:40I know that you are a very determined woman.
18:44And this guy?
18:47He's very determined.
18:48Yeah.
18:49Keep your goals right there.
18:52Okay?
18:53Right in front of you.
18:54Okay?
18:55And sometimes to reach goals, you have to do very difficult things.
18:59I want you to put these back.
19:08Okay?
19:09Okay.
19:10When I put the food back, I was choosing my life over food.
19:16Goodbye, cheese.
19:18I wanted those cheese danishes.
19:20I wanted those potato chips.
19:22I wanted those hot dogs.
19:23It really taught me a lot about how deep this addiction that I have is.
19:28It never should have gotten this far.
19:30Never should have gotten this out of hand.
19:35It's day 63, and I'm getting all the exercise I can to be a healthy man for my wife and my child.
19:42It was just as long as we've done.
19:44I know.
19:45I've had a lot of physical changes in myself since I've been here.
19:48I can stand for way longer periods of time without back pain.
19:53My core strength is really good.
19:55I can walk longer.
19:56I can walk more often.
19:58I've accomplished a lot that I never could have accomplished at all.
20:07How we doing, bud?
20:08Doing good.
20:09How's the training going?
20:10Oh, fantastic.
20:11Fantastic?
20:12Yeah, we had seven and a half minutes yesterday.
20:13Awesome.
20:14Just keeps getting better, huh, man?
20:15Yeah, you ready for this?
20:16I'm ready.
20:24All right.
20:25Nice.
20:26Down to 450, dude.
20:27I'll take it.
20:28I lost seven pounds.
20:29So that's 67 pounds.
20:32Yeah!
20:35Oh, it feels great.
20:37Ready?
20:38Ready to rock?
20:39No.
20:40No?
20:41Not yet?
20:42No.
20:43Scared.
20:44Yeah.
20:45You got it, girl.
20:46I don't think so.
20:56All right.
20:57297.
20:58How do you feel?
20:59I gained three pounds?
21:03Oh, my God!
21:04I don't really know where to go from here.
21:06It's just very, very discouraging.
21:08It's very, very discouraging.
21:11What is wrong?
21:12Seriously.
21:13Don't let it get to you.
21:15Like, we're all here to help you.
21:17What is wrong?
21:18It's just one week.
21:19You can't think about the numbers like that.
21:21I have to.
21:22That's why I'm here.
21:23I know.
21:24I know.
21:25And it's frustrating, because you worked really hard.
21:29There's nothing you can say.
21:30It's a nightmare.
21:32It's bad.
21:33We're gonna be all right.
21:35What do I do?
21:36I don't know what to do.
21:37I don't know what to do.
21:38I really just don't feel like doing anything today.
21:42I'm really discouraged.
21:46I don't know what else to say.
21:50I just don't know what else to say.
22:07I just kind of feel hopeless.
22:08Yeah.
22:09And, um, failure and, um...
22:10Okay.
22:11So what's the feeling like a failure about?
22:12Oh, God.
22:13It's okay.
22:14Let the feelings come up.
22:15Sometimes it's good to get those feelings.
22:16Oh.
22:17I just, I...
22:18I tried to raise my kids opposite of how I'd been raised and just didn't work.
22:23My two youngest kids have issues with weight.
22:24My daughter's as heavy as I am.
22:25Okay.
22:26Do you blame yourself for that?
22:27I don't know.
22:28I think I blame myself for everything.
22:29You know, I lost one boy to drugs and I have a 41-year-old in rehab.
22:30And I just, I, I tried to raise my kids opposite of how I'd been raised and just didn't work.
22:41My two youngest kids have issues with weight.
22:44My daughter's as heavy as I am.
22:46Okay.
22:47Do you blame yourself for that?
22:49I don't know.
22:51I, I think I blame myself for everything.
22:54You know, I lost one boy to drugs and I have a 41-year-old in rehab.
22:59And I just don't get it.
23:01What can you say to yourself to give yourself a little bit of hope that things can get better?
23:06I don't know.
23:07It's just a bad day.
23:08Tomorrow will be better.
23:09Yeah, I think so.
23:11And today you're tired.
23:13Yeah.
23:14Right.
23:15I'll get some sleep and tomorrow I'll be better.
23:17Yeah.
23:18Yeah.
23:19My name is Mike and I'm Patty's oldest son.
23:34I haven't seen my mother in 10 years.
23:39Having come out of rehab a month and a half ago, I wanted to surprise her and make amends
23:47for a decade of lost time.
23:49I haven't seen you for so long.
24:02I just never imagined.
24:04I never imagined.
24:06I never imagined.
24:07I am ecstatic beyond belief.
24:17I was overwhelmed with emotion.
24:19I was, it was crazy.
24:24I just, I could hold my baby again, you know?
24:27I usually use cane.
24:29Having not seen my mother in 10 years, she's put on an unprecedented amount of weight.
24:35I know I'm done avoiding problems and people.
24:39And I came to that understanding through my own personal rehabilitation.
24:43And I knew, you know, I could help my mom, finally.
24:47I know I, uh, I haven't been a good son for a long time.
24:57It's okay.
24:59Jeez, so many years.
25:02You beat your addiction.
25:04I'm trying to beat mine.
25:06Yeah.
25:07Mike's absence in my life caused me a great deal of worry and anxiety and nervousness
25:13that I usually filled with food.
25:17So, it had a big effect on me.
25:34I am so excited.
25:36I cannot believe that this has happened.
25:38I never thought I would ever be a dad.
25:40I never, never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be a dad.
25:45And now I'm going to be one.
25:53Hello.
25:54My wife Jackie is here.
25:56You can go down that hallway and be almost at the end of the right hand side.
26:01Okay.
26:10There's our little girl.
26:11I know, Tilly.
26:12She looks good.
26:13Awesome.
26:14Thank you.
26:15She was eight, nine, twenty inches long.
26:16Wow.
26:17Wow.
26:18Good job, sweetie.
26:19All right, mommy.
26:20I'll hand her over to you.
26:21We'll take her right here.
26:22Thank you.
26:23She's the sweetest little girl.
26:24Congratulations.
26:25Thank you so much.
26:26You're welcome.
26:27Hey, baby.
26:28Sweet little baby.
26:29Can I hold her some?
26:30Yeah.
26:31It's so hard to hand her over.
26:32I know it's hard to let her go.
26:33Yeah.
26:34Yeah.
26:35Oh, good job.
26:36Oh, good job, sweetie.
26:37Oh, good job, sweetie.
26:38All right, mommy.
26:39I'll hand her over to you.
26:40I'll take her right here.
26:41Thank you.
26:42Thank you.
26:43She's the sweetest little girl.
26:44Congratulations.
26:45Thank you so much.
26:46Thank you.
26:47Thank you so much.
26:48You're welcome.
26:49Hey, baby.
26:50Can I hold her some?
26:51Yeah.
26:52It's so hard to hand her over.
26:55I know it's hard to let her go.
26:56Yeah.
26:57I know.
26:58Mark looks really great.
27:00I could immediately tell a difference in the way he looked.
27:03I've just missed him.
27:04I've missed him a lot.
27:06It was just really good to see him.
27:08Look at that face.
27:09Oh.
27:10Whiskers.
27:11I'm holding Tilly Claire for the very first time,
27:15and I've never felt a more pure feeling of bliss
27:19in my entire life in that moment.
27:21I could just eat you up.
27:22I'm not saying something,
27:24because Daddy's a food addict.
27:26Yes.
27:27I love her so much.
27:28I've never loved anything like I love her.
27:30I will do anything for her.
27:32I've been waiting to talk to you for a long time.
27:47This is The Roar?
27:48Yeah.
27:49This is on 20 pounds.
27:50That's too much.
27:51Oh.
27:52Well, this is like doing nothing.
27:54Yeah.
27:55That's what you think.
27:56Do that for five minutes.
27:57Five minutes?
27:58Yeah.
27:59Okay.
28:00Really?
28:01This is gonna be aerobic?
28:02Sure it is.
28:03I just wanted to talk about how good it is to have my son here.
28:08It's been wonderful to reconnect with him.
28:11I know you're gonna be okay now, so it's less for me to worry about.
28:15Exactly.
28:16You have nothing to worry about with me.
28:17Yeah.
28:18It's a big burden.
28:19You have to worry about you now.
28:20Yeah.
28:21And just keep strengthening yourself.
28:25Having Mike come here was the best surprise anybody could have given me.
28:29Ever.
28:30It was unbelievable the time I got to spend with him.
28:34And as hard as it was to see him go, Mike had a lot of wisdom that helped me a lot, that's picked me up.
28:42You be safe, okay?
28:43I will.
28:44I'll talk to you soon, okay?
28:45I'm gonna keep tracking you.
28:47Bye, Mom.
28:52It lifted a big weight off of me.
29:12I miss him.
29:27Every day.
29:29How long were you home for?
29:3212 days.
29:35Not nearly long enough.
29:37Yeah.
29:39Sorry.
29:42I just wish they were here, or I was there every day.
29:48Do you think that these weeks that you're going to spend here until you go home are an investment in your daughter's life?
29:58They are.
30:00And I still just, I just...
30:03Sorry.
30:19You don't have to apologize to me.
30:22I just miss him.
30:24This is the toughest part for me, is just to fight through.
30:34I'm a fighter, though.
30:36I've been fighting for a long time.
30:39And, uh, I'll get through this.
30:43Since Mike left, I've been having big weight losses.
30:56Big for me.
30:57Five pounds almost every week.
30:59So I now have hope that I'm gonna lose more weight than I've been thinking.
31:04265.6.
31:07That is a 5.4 loss.
31:08Ah!
31:09I did it again!
31:10Oh my God!
31:11Doing good work here.
31:12It's just hard.
31:13You know, I mean, miss home.
31:14It's just lonely.
31:15And I miss my family, and I miss my girl.
31:17I've never, uh, loved anything so much in my life.
31:20That's 70% of my life.
31:22I miss home.
31:23I miss home.
31:24It's just lonely.
31:26And I miss my family, and I miss my girl.
31:29I've never, uh, loved anything so much in my life.
31:32That's 7.8 pounds.
31:35Wow!
31:37I came here to change my life.
31:39To be a better dad, and a better husband.
31:42And that's what it boils down to.
31:44Down, and pull it right up into your armpit.
32:03Excellent!
32:04All the way down into your armpit.
32:07When I first got here, six months seemed like such a long time.
32:12But without this opportunity, I wouldn't be able to do the things that I'm able to do now.
32:20I never thought that I would be in a kayak.
32:33Six months ago, the thought of not using my scooter would have been very scary.
32:39Bye-bye.
32:40Come on now!
32:41Today, I feel stronger.
32:42I feel thinner.
32:43And if I could do it all over again, I would.
32:56It's my last week, and I am nervous and excited.
33:00I will be running my half marathon at the end of this week.
33:05I'm very excited that I have the capacity to actually finish the race.
33:21Going into my last weigh-in, I'm anxious.
33:24I realize that my journey here really is over.
33:28This is a special day!
33:29Dude, what a special day!
33:30How are you?
33:31I'm good, I'm good.
33:32All right.
33:33Good, good, good, good.
33:34All right.
33:35All right.
33:36Get those shoes off and step on that old scale there.
33:39Let's see what you got here.
33:46Your starting weight is 312.8 pounds.
33:54You are 247 even.
34:01Oh, my gosh.
34:02I think that means I lost 65 pounds.
34:04You lost 65.8 pounds.
34:09Good job.
34:10You know, one of your issues, obviously, are your joints and your hips and your knees.
34:15Yeah.
34:16And it's estimated that for every pound you lose, that takes about three to five, maybe more pounds off of your joints.
34:23So let's be conservative and say that's just three pounds times, that's almost 200 pounds of less stress on those joints.
34:33I wonder if I can walk better.
34:34That's what counts.
34:35Absolutely.
34:36Walking out of here 65 pounds lighter, I feel awesome.
34:41I would not have been able to lose 10 pounds a month at home.
34:44And now I'm armed with all this knowledge and about nutrition and exercise and I'm prepared to take it on in the real world.
34:56Going into my final weigh-in, they really kind of reminded me of just how far I've come.
35:00Good morning, Bob.
35:01Good morning, Mark.
35:02Fresh off your run this morning?
35:03Yes, sir.
35:04In the span of six months, I'm going to be running a half marathon.
35:07The race is coming.
35:08All right.
35:09Well, let's check it out here.
35:10Here we go.
35:11Take a big, deep breath.
35:12We got 357.4.
35:29That's 159 pounds.
35:33159.6.
35:35That's unbelievable, man.
35:36Where are you, man?
35:37You're leaning mean.
35:39I'm getting there.
35:40I'm getting there.
35:41All right.
35:42Man.
35:43All right, good job.
35:44Good job.
35:45All right.
35:46If you would have told me that I could lose 160 pounds in six months, I would have told you you were crazy.
35:51That's just an impossibility.
35:53But it didn't.
36:06All right, here we go.
36:08One more time down the ramp.
36:10Do you guys remember when you walked up this ramp for the first time?
36:13Yep.
36:14Barely walked up the ramp for the first time.
36:16I don't think I walked up into that.
36:17More of a wobble.
36:19When I walked in here six months ago, I was defeated.
36:23I was a defeated woman.
36:24Oh, my God.
36:25Oh, my God.
36:26Oh, my God.
36:27Oh, my God.
36:28Holy mother of Mary.
36:29I didn't want to live the way I'd been living.
36:31And now I don't have to do that anymore.
36:35Stop.
36:36Sorry.
36:37I can't wait to see my family.
36:43And I know when they see me, they're going to be overwhelmed by what I've achieved.
36:50Everything I've learned here, I'm about to put to the test in the real world.
36:59Do I fall back into old habits?
37:01Oh, my God.
37:02This food is so great.
37:03God.
37:04You all right?
37:06Yeah.
37:07The answer to that is going to be no.
37:09I've got to get one more.
37:10All right.
37:11All right.
37:12I'm strong enough now to know that I can face these obstacles and overcome them.
37:18And I don't need food to get me through it.
37:34All right.
37:35Hi.
37:36Hi.
37:37Hi.
37:38Have a seat.
37:39My makeover was so much fun today.
37:44I had manicure, pedicure.
37:46I had a facial.
37:47So I'm going to do a little bit more blonde around your face to kind of, you know, bring
37:51out some of that I've been on the beach sun glitz look.
37:54I'm so excited.
37:56I'm happy.
37:57I'm excited.
37:58I'm a little nervous.
38:00Your color, it turned out great.
38:02Yeah.
38:03I'm so excited.
38:04Ah!
38:05Oh, my God.
38:06This is absolutely beautiful.
38:09I didn't think I could look this good.
38:11I feel like a new person.
38:17I've missed my mom so much.
38:22I cannot wait to see her.
38:23I can't wait for her to be back.
38:25I hope that she feels better about herself and is excited to continue the journey and continue
38:32getting healthy.
38:33I'm just anxious to see my mom and just want to give her a big hug when I see her.
38:39So it will feel really good.
38:42I'm hoping to see the culmination of this entire six month period.
38:47I'm just very hopeful that I will notice a difference, you know, for the better.
38:53I can't even begin to tell you how much it means to me to be able to just walk into my
38:58house and not roll on a scooter or struggle in hunched over on a thick, thick cane.
39:06I'm so excited.
39:07How's it feel, Mom?
39:08It feels so good.
39:09Peter, my hummingbird.
39:10Come on.
39:11Oh my God.
39:12Oh my God.
39:13Oh my God.
39:14Everything has changed so much.
39:28I feel like I have my mom back.
39:32Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! I feel like I have my mom back. I have not seen her walk in years. Literally. She's a huge influence on all of us. So her getting out there is just gonna get the ball rolling for all of us.
39:52Oh my God! Are you riding a tricycle too? Oh my gosh! I feel awesome. I'm home. I'm happy. It was so worth it. I'm just on my way and there's no stopping me now.
40:22Woo! I'm excited. I mean, 13.1 miles is no joke, but I've been training for it. I'm ready to go.
40:42Seven and a half miles. I'm a little tired, but we're pushing through.
40:48I don't know. I'm hurting. I'm thinking about Tilly.
41:01It was really hard to be away for Mark for six months, but I'm really hopeful that all of this has been for the best and it was not all for nothing.
41:15I'm really glad.
41:18I'm really glad that Mark's home.
41:29He's really come a long way and I'm just really proud of him and glad he's home. So glad he's home.
41:34It was great having Jackie here.
41:47This has been the greatest experience of my life and it really has taught me a lot of things that I'd forgotten about myself, about how tough I am, about how strong I can be. That finish line was part of my new life and there will be many more finish lines.
42:03How do you feel? I am tired. It's not the end at all. It's just the beginning.
42:09I'm pretty much better.
