00:00As the mother of superstar Kenny West, Donda West had humble beginnings and raised her son to be one of the biggest rappers in the world.
00:23She became a regular presence at Hollywood's most popular parties.
00:28Donda broke all the stereotypes about black single mothers raising black children.
00:36But on November 10, 2007, Donda West died 24 hours after plastic surgery.
00:42Amid the media chaos, suspicion turned to her surgeon, Dr. Jen Adams.
01:01Donda's surgery seems to have gone well.
01:08The big mystery is, why did she die suddenly just 24 hours later?
01:13Dr. Michael Hunter is a world-famous medical examiner.
01:32He performed more than 4,000 autopsies with the aim of understanding the cause of death.
01:36Today, he is the chief medical examiner of one of the largest cities in the United States.
01:43I have here in my hands an extremely detailed 36-page autopsy report on Donda West.
01:51We already know that she had plastic surgery before she died.
01:55And the coroner concluded that multiple post-operative factors could have led to her death.
02:00But the exact contribution of each factor has not been determined.
02:04My mission today is to find out exactly what led to Donda West's death.
02:137 a.m., November 9, 2007.
02:17Brentwood Surgery Center in Beverly Hills.
02:21Donda West, 58, is about to undergo liposuction and breast augmentation.
02:27She moved from the American Midwest to California 3 years ago after leaving her job as an English teacher,
02:35when her son, rapper Kenny, asked her to become his manager.
02:40Kenny has just released his third album, Graduation, to great acclaim, and is engaged to fashion designer Alexis Pfeiffer.
02:48He's the one paying for his mother's surgery.
02:51Kenny said his mother was beautiful the way she was, but when you love someone, that's what they want, you can understand why he paid without arguing.
03:05After evaluating several doctors for the surgery, Donda finally chose Dr. Jen Adams, a highly regarded surgeon.
03:13The autopsy report shows that Donda underwent several cosmetic procedures.
03:20Incisions were made on the upper and lower parts of the body, which reveals the scale of the surgery.
03:28Eight in the morning.
03:30Donda is pre-evaluated for surgery.
03:33The procedure will take five and a half hours and during that time she will be under general anesthesia.
03:39Your vital signs will always be monitored.
03:48Donda West was born on July 12, 1949, in Oklahoma City.
03:55As a child, she was affectionately called Big Girl by her parents, Portwood and Lucy Williams.
04:03Parents always demanded excellence.
04:06She once said she got several tens and a nine.
04:11And the father asked, why did you get a nine?
04:16Most importantly, Donda won a scholarship to Virginia Union University for her talent in music.
04:24She was a member of the university choir and was an amazing singer.
04:29Donda began her teaching career in the early 1970s and in 1973 married Ray West, an award-winning photographer and member of the Black Panther Party.
04:42I remember in the relationship with Ray West, they had some deep conversations and debates and there was a lot of passion.
04:51To me, they were the perfect combination to create a Kanye West.
04:56Kanye West, their first and only child, was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta.
05:03At the age of three, Kanye moved to Chicago with his mother after his parents' divorce.
05:18Donda raised Kanye as a single mother.
05:21She was a top-notch mother.
05:24She used everything she had as an educator on this boy who was her son.
05:30At the same time, she achieved a successful career as an educator, becoming a professor of English at Chicago State University.
05:44Donda had many challenges.
05:46Raising a child, managing schedules, needing childcare, living in a city with no relatives, no support system.
05:55And raising a son who wanted to be a rapper.
05:59Because she wanted him to go to college, but he wanted to be a rapper and she respected her son's wishes.
06:07With his mother's support, Kanye dropped out of college and dedicated himself to becoming a rapper.
06:35They were both very determined.
06:38And when two very determined people are the most important figures in each other's lives, a very intense, very incredible bond emerges.
06:48And I think that's what made them such a great duo.
06:52They were ready to take on the world.
06:54Eight thirty in the morning, November 9, 2007.
07:03Donda is taken to the operating room.
07:07While the mother is about to undergo surgery,
07:10Kanye is over five thousand miles away in London, promoting his new album, Graduation.
07:17Eight forty-five.
07:21Donda receives general anesthesia.
07:25I know Donda had been planning the surgery for quite some time.
07:28She weighed 85 kilos, was 1.57m tall and her BMI was 34.5, which clinically indicates obesity.
07:37Donda's weight is relevant because the autopsy revealed that her thyroid was less active than normal.
07:44A problem called hypothyroidism.
07:49In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones.
07:55This causes the metabolism to slow down, leading to weight gain.
08:00This discovery explains why Donda had so much trouble controlling her weight.
08:07According to this autopsy report, Donda's surgery began with liposuction.
08:14This is a procedure aimed at removing fat from the body.
08:20Nine in the morning.
08:22Donda is prepared for liposuction.
08:26In liposuction, a cold serum containing adrenaline and a local anesthetic is first injected into the adipose tissue.
08:35Cannula, please.
08:36Then a large hollow tube, attached to a powerful suction apparatus, is inserted through several small cuts in the skin.
08:44It is inserted into fat deposits, where it is moved with force.
08:51The fat is very solid and needs to be dissolved before it can be aspirated through the tube.
08:57The serum helps to soften and liquefy the fat.
09:00And at this point, what I wonder is, did Donda have any pre-existing conditions that could be aggravated by general anesthesia?
09:10From the autopsy report, you can see that she had a significant medical problem, which is pre-diabetes.
09:16Care for adults who have diabetes and undergo surgery is crucial.
09:23From what I saw, the surgical team was not aware of Donda's problem and were not monitoring her blood sugar levels.
09:30If Donda had severe type 2 diabetes, her glucose levels could have risen, leading to hyperglycemia, which can lead to a coma and then death.
09:39But in this case, she only had prediabetes, so that's unlikely.
09:47At this early stage of the operation, the greatest risk is fluid loss.
09:54Fluid imbalance is one of the most common problems with liposuction.
09:58If the body loses more than 20% of its total blood volume, it makes it very difficult for the heart to pump blood to the organs,
10:07which can cause injury and lead to hypovolemic shock.
10:14Hypovolemic shock is an emergency situation in which a severe loss of blood and fluids
10:19makes the heart unable to pump blood around the body, which can be fatal.
10:24And in just 24 hours, Donda would be dead.
10:31Mix.
10:3110:35 a.m., November 9, 2007.
10:47Brentwood Surgery Center in Beverly Hills.
10:51Donda has been under general anesthesia for over an hour and is undergoing liposuction.
10:57The most significant risk to your health at this stage of the operation is fluid loss, which can lead to hypovolemic shock.
11:09During Donda's liposuction, she received 3.5 liters of fluid, lost 400 ml of blood, and had 1 liter and 400 ml of fat suctioned out.
11:19These numbers are not large.
11:23Therefore, there were no complications with Donda's fluids.
11:26So we can rule out hypovolemic shock.
11:33What is becoming clear is that Donda is not in good physical shape.
11:37The question we have to ask is this.
11:39Why is someone in her condition, at 58 years old, having such an intense surgery?
11:46Donda spent 31 years teaching in higher education, eventually becoming the English Department Representative at the University of Chicago.
11:57When she retired, it was to take on the responsibility of being Kenny's agent.
12:05In 2004, after more than 20 years living in Chicago, Donda moved to Los Angeles and entered the world of show business as a music agent.
12:17A maneuver that would bring many profits to his son.
12:22When someone achieves such great success, as Kenny did,
12:27I think it's important to have people you trust around you.
12:30And Kenny didn't trust anyone, like he trusted his mother.
12:35With his mother by his side, Kenny's debut album, The College Dropout, released in February 2004, propelled him to international success.
12:46It contained major hits, Through the Wire and Slow Jams, his first number one song.
12:55In early 2007, Kenny West was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
13:00But managing Kenny and living in Los Angeles also put Donda in the spotlight.
13:09She was now the agent for one of music's biggest hits.
13:13It's a lot of pressure, and she was feeling that pressure.
13:17I don't know who was pressuring her, but she wanted to do justice to the work.
13:24Moving from the Midwest to Los Angeles is different.
13:34Los Angeles is the world of stars.
13:37And when you live in that environment, there comes the need to look good.
13:44I have friends who wear a size 38 and feel like they are fat.
13:49And they're from Los Angeles.
13:51By 2007, Kenny was already a huge celebrity.
13:56And when he announced his engagement to Alexis Pfeiffer, the media circus surrounding him went crazy.
14:05Aware of the attention he would be receiving and wanting to look his best for the cameras,
14:11Donda finally decided to have plastic surgery.
14:14I don't think there is a woman who doesn't understand the feeling of not being good enough,
14:19of not having the right look to be right.
14:21I think in Hollywood, where looks are everything and everything is very superficial,
14:26this feeling is even more absurd.
14:30Half past twelve, November 9, 2007.
14:34Brentwood Surgery Center.
14:36After finishing Donda's liposuction,
14:39Dr. Jen Adams and her team are ready for the next procedure.
14:44I found out that Donda didn't just have liposuction,
14:47but due to the incisions made, she also had an abdominoplasty,
14:51which basically hides the curves around the waist area.
14:57They are now halfway through the surgery and Donda has been under anesthesia for 3 hours.
15:03In addition to these other procedures, Donda also underwent breast augmentation.
15:09There are many procedures performed at once.
15:11The autopsy report shows that Donda was anesthetized for 7 hours and 15 minutes,
15:18which is a long time.
15:21The risk of being anesthetized for a very long time is that it increases the likelihood of blood clots,
15:26as well as infection.
15:28It can also lead to excessive swelling and longer recovery time.
15:32At 1:10 pm, Donda's operation ended.
15:42She is taken out of the operating room, but is still unconscious.
15:48Typically, the patient becomes conscious within an hour after surgery.
15:52But at 4pm, Donda still hasn't woken up from the anesthesia.
15:58Your friend Diana Penkney is eagerly awaiting.
16:02I was in another room and every now and then I would peek into the recovery room and she would still be asleep.
16:11According to the autopsy report, at around 4:30 in the afternoon, Donda finally cut it.
16:18She was described as dazed, with no sense of people, place or time.
16:22The first thing she said was, do I look pretty?
16:28And me...
16:30I asked, are you serious?
16:33And she said, yes, do I look pretty?
16:36I said, friend, you look wonderful.
16:37She had a thin waist, she was very happy.
16:42And she smiled the biggest smile.
16:43And I said, see what you did through all that pain?
16:47She may be happy with her new look, but Donda is still at risk of complications from the anesthesia,
16:53especially blood clots and infection.
16:596 pm.
17:02It's only been 3 hours since the surgery ended.
17:05But Donda makes a surprising decision.
17:09She disconnects from the monitoring equipment and leaves the hospital to recover at home.
17:20What I find extraordinary is that Donda was able to leave the hospital 3 hours after undergoing such a complicated surgery.
17:28I would expect her to spend several days in the hospital, where her vital signs would be closely monitored.
17:35She is taken home by her nephew, Stephens Coggins, and his friend, Diana.
17:42When it was time to leave, I went in and she was lying down and I said to Donda, let's go.
17:52She said, are you ready?
17:54And I, no, are you ready?
17:56And she said, yes, I want to go home now.
17:59Despite warnings from her surgeon, Dr Diana Adams, about the dangers of not staying in hospital after an operation, she is determined to leave.
18:09They agree to release her into the care of Coggins, who is a trained nurse.
18:15He agreed to arrange all the necessary equipment to monitor Donda's recovery.
18:20It may be that Donda's decision not to stay at the clinic and not have the assistance that the doctor suggested,
18:28it was because she wanted to have privacy, go back to her house and not be exposed.
18:35She must have been a little worried that the press would find out and make it a big deal.
18:40Eight thirty at night.
18:43The group returns to Donda's house in Marina del Rey.
18:47She is weak and tired.
18:50She was in a lot of pain.
18:52And I told her once more,
18:55you will feel a lot of pain.
19:00Diana and Donda's personal assistant, Nubia, help Donda get from bed to the bathroom.
19:06She has bandages on the liposuction incisions on the front and back of her body.
19:15Nubia and I took her, held her upright and started cleaning all sides.
19:21And she felt better.
19:23But I read that Donda complained of chills, high fever, hyperventilation and tachycardia.
19:30It is possible that she had a blood infection or septicemia.
19:36Septecemia occurs when a bacterial infection enters the bloodstream.
19:44It can cause severe drops in blood pressure, called septic shock.
19:49When this happens, multiple organ failure can occur.
19:54More than half of people who suffer severe septic shock die.
19:58Eight o'clock in the morning, Saturday, November 10th, the day after the operation.
20:08After her plastic surgeries, Donda continues her recovery at home, despite the recommendation of her doctor, Dr. Jen Adams.
20:17She really should have been kept under monitoring at the hospital.
20:20Without it, the people who were supposed to be taking care of her had no way of knowing anything.
20:28Vital signs are a fundamental factor during the postoperative period.
20:32Without them, the risk and danger is much greater.
20:35But Donda insisted that she had a qualified nurse, her nephew, Stephen Scoggins.
20:41He was the one who took care of her during the night.
20:43She adored her nephew.
20:46She asked him to stay with her, to take care of her.
20:52She refused to stay in the hospital.
20:54Donda refused because she talked to Scoggins and he agreed to take care of her.
21:00He went there to do that.
21:03Scoggins promised he would get her all the equipment she needed to help her at home.
21:09But so far, nothing has been delivered.
21:11I said to him, where are the things you ordered for me?
21:17Did you ask for a bed in the hospital, a special chair to put in the shower so we could bathe her?
21:24So where is all this?
21:27The fact that she had chills and a high fever suggests that she could be suffering from a post-operative infection called septicemia.
21:34I read that the surgeon, Dr. Jen Adams, prescribed a very strong antibiotic for Donda called Keflex.
21:42This is to prevent infection.
21:45I also read that a blood culture test was performed for the autopsy.
21:50The test was negative.
21:52So we can rule out septicemia.
21:539 am, 10 hours before death.
22:00Donda feels worse than she did yesterday, right after the surgery.
22:04Her friend Diana and her assistant Nubia do what they can to help.
22:10I saw in the autopsy report that Nubia gave her Vicodin for post-operative pain.
22:15After such surgery, it is normal for patients to experience pain for several weeks.
22:21And the recovery period would be longer.
22:23It would be common to prescribe painkillers in this case.
22:289:30 in the morning.
22:30Stephen Scoggins packs his bags and tells Nubia and Diana, who have no medical experience or training, that he needs to leave.
22:38All right. You can do it. All right.
22:40He explains that they need to give Donda painkillers by 10 o'clock.
22:45I asked, are you leaving?
22:48And he said, yeah, I have a baby shower.
22:51Okay. So, what about the hospital bed when it arrives?
22:54Oh, well, it's coming today.
22:56I said, Scoggins, I need it all.
22:59I need a thermometer.
23:01I need to have everything here.
23:0510:15 in the morning.
23:07Donda receives a phone call from Kenny, who is in London, and wants to know how she is doing.
23:13Hi, hello.
23:14Hi, mom.
23:15Soon after, Nubia and Diana also check to see if she is okay.
23:22I asked her how she was feeling, and she said she had a sore throat.
23:26And I said, I hear a noise in your chest that wasn't there before.
23:31What happened?
23:32The interesting thing is that not only did she have chest pain, but her throat was sore.
23:3840% of patients intubated during surgery have a sore throat.
23:44Although throat irritation is common, it can also be a sign of a serious problem.
23:51In the 48 hours after an operation, the lungs are vulnerable to contracting pneumonia.
23:56Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs in which the alveoli are filled with pus and other fluids, making it difficult for oxygen to enter the blood.
24:16This creates extra pressure on the heart and, in extreme cases, can be fatal.
24:24Later, the coroner considered that this pneumonia was very small and was not the cause of death.
24:31But it is certainly something that could have created extra stress on Donda's body.
24:3811 am, Donda walks to the kitchen.
24:41She is weak and can barely stand.
24:44She tries to eat and drink something for breakfast with difficulty.
24:51I heard Donda ask Nubia for more Vicodin and I said, you want more Vicodin? Yikes!
24:59And she said, I want something stronger. And you know, I don't know anything stronger than Vicodin.
25:05Lunchtime approaches and the medical equipment Stephen Scoggins promised has yet to arrive.
25:12Please call me.
25:14Diana keeps calling, but he doesn't answer.
25:18Donda kept saying, call Scoggins, but nothing, it just went to voicemail.
25:24All day long.
25:27Two o'clock in the afternoon, Donda is having trouble breathing and is in pain.
25:32She is also sweating and cold towels are pressed against her forehead.
25:38She was tired, she was sweating and that's when I brought the towel and asked, why are you sweating? What's going on?
25:47Why is she breathing like that?
25:48I saw from the autopsy report that Donda was experiencing chest pains, shortness of breath, was sweating and coughing.
25:55Although these are symptoms of pneumonia, they could also indicate something much more deadly.
26:02A pulmonary embolism due to a blood clot.
26:05Immobility during and after surgery can lead to a blood clot forming in the large veins of the legs.
26:15If this clot breaks loose, it will travel to the lungs through increasingly narrow vessels.
26:21Eventually, it will reach a vessel that is too narrow and block the flow of blood in the veins.
26:26This is a pulmonary embolism.
26:28An obstruction of blood flow from the heart to the lungs, usually causing sudden death.
26:35Having preferred to recover at home, without hospital monitoring and now without nurses,
26:44Donda is at high risk of suffering from a pulmonary embolism.
26:49Was that what killed her suddenly?
26:52It is concerning that Donda chose to leave the hospital just three hours after surgery.
26:57and therefore has not had adequate medical supervision.
27:01Her death is still a mystery that I have to solve.
27:05Two thirty in the afternoon, five hours before death.
27:10Donda is resting in bed.
27:12His nephew, Stephen Scoggins, a nurse, was responsible for his care.
27:18But he left and left Donda with only her friend, Diana, and her assistant, Nubia.
27:23We helped, took her for a walk.
27:26You can't stand still too much.
27:28Every doctor tells us to walk around so we don't stay in bed.
27:31Donda is at risk of suffering a potentially lethal pulmonary embolism
27:37due to a blood clot blocking your arteries.
27:41And without hospital monitoring, the risk is even greater.
27:46Although Donda has symptoms of pulmonary embolism and the post-operative period makes this risk greater,
27:52There is nothing in the autopsy report to indicate that an embolism occurred.
27:56She was in intense pain, something was very wrong.
27:593 pm, Donda is feeling intense pain and Nubia and Diana are becoming increasingly worried.
28:11I read that the surgeon prescribed Vicodin for her, which is a very strong painkiller and must be used with caution.
28:18Donda keeps asking for more Vicodin.
28:25Not knowing if they can give her more and without contact with Stephen Scoggins,
28:30They call Donda's plastic surgeon, Dr. Jen Adams.
28:35Dr. Adams?
28:36Dr. Adams asked Nubia and I to follow the prescription he gave us exactly.
28:43Take this at such and such a time, a Vicodin every 4 to 6 hours, along with an antibiotic.
28:51The main ingredient in Vicodin is hydrocodone.
28:57Hydrocodone is a synthetic opioid very similar to morphine.
29:01If used for a long period of time, it becomes addictive and can also cause overdose.
29:07Dr. Adams prescribed 30 pills and they were supposed to last a week.
29:12But when Nubia looked in the pot, there were only 10 left.
29:19This is not good.
29:22Apparently, on the first night after surgery, when Scoggins took care of Donda,
29:27she took more Vicodin than she should have.
29:334 pm.
29:35Donda's friend and Kenny's godmother, Glenda Lee, arrives.
29:38After eating some, Donda takes more Vicodin for her intense pain.
29:496 pm.
29:51Donda tries to rest more.
29:54Following Dr. Jan Adams' instructions, Nubia and Diana placed pillows under their knees
30:00and under Donda's head to relieve pain and facilitate circulation.
30:06I said, I'll be right back.
30:08And she said, okay, I'm fine.
30:10I said, if you need anything, call me.
30:12And she, okay, I'm fine.
30:14Very calm.
30:187:15 pm.
30:21Nubia asks Glenda to take a look at Donda, as she is too quiet.
30:28Glenda comes in to see if everything is okay.
30:31Donda?
30:31Donda?
30:35Donda, wake up, darling, wake up.
30:38Diane!
30:40Nubia!
30:41Nubia!
30:42Nubia!
30:44Donda!
30:48Do something?
30:49Do what?
30:50Cardiac passage.
30:51Please do something.
30:53Nubia was left...
30:53Doctor West, Doctor West, wake up, wake up shaking her.
30:58Doctor, wake up, wake up!
31:00And I told her, give her a cardiac massage.
31:03She'll be waking up!
31:05Go, go, go, go!
31:06Emergency!
31:06Nubia tries to perform CPR while Glenda calls emergency services
31:12at 7:35 pm.
31:15Please, she's not breathing.
31:17This is the original recording.
31:19Are you doing CPR?
31:20Ma'am, isn't she breathing?
31:25Ma'am, okay, so she is...
31:26Ma'am, isn't she breathing?
31:29Send an ambulance!
31:30Cell phone reception is poor.
31:33What did he say?
31:34Making it difficult to understand the instructions.
31:37The signal in the room was horrible, so I grabbed my phone and went into the hallway.
31:47where there was a signal and I called Dr. Adams.
31:50I said, Donda is not breathing.
31:52He said, did you check the pulse?
31:54Do you know how?
31:54I said, of course I know how to check a pulse.
32:007 and 45.
32:02Paramedics arrive at the scene.
32:04Donda is inert.
32:06Donda!
32:06Nubia lost her mind and Glenda froze.
32:11She didn't even move.
32:14It was as if time stopped.
32:16He was...
32:16It was very strange.
32:19The paramedics try everything they can to revive Donda.
32:25Go!
32:26But at 8:29, she is pronounced dead.
32:42The tragedy is 8,000 kilometers away in London, where he receives the news.
32:56When Kenny found out, he must have been completely devastated.
32:59Because he didn't lose his mother, he lost his best friend.
33:03It was someone who meant everything to him.
33:06And the flight home must have been difficult.
33:09I had called Donda to see how she was doing after her surgery.
33:15And the assistant answered the phone crying.
33:17She told me and I...
33:19I...
33:20I stayed...
33:20Shocked.
33:22I don't know how to express what I felt.
33:25It was an unbearable sadness.
33:28A shock.
33:29A shock.
33:31It couldn't be true.
33:35You end up realizing how fragile life is.
33:38How uncertain the future is for all of us.
33:41And it doesn't matter how big your plans for your life are.
33:45Everything can end.
33:46Donda West's funeral was held in Oklahoma City on November 20, 2007.
33:55About a thousand friends and family attended and Kenny led the funeral procession.
34:07For Dr. Hunter, the cause of Donda's death 24 hours after surgery is still unclear.
34:13I looked at the paramedic's report and there was a note about a black substance present on her face.
34:24This could be vomited blood, which resulting from bleeding in the stomach or intestines could indicate a drug overdose.
34:32For example, Vicodin.
34:34The toxicology report shows that there was 16 milligrams of hydrocodone in her stomach and a slightly elevated amount in her blood.
34:45So, would Donda have died from an accidental overdose?
34:49This report shows that Donda had no internal bleeding and that there was a slightly elevated amount of the drug in her blood.
34:55She did not die from gastrointestinal bleeding or from the painkiller.
35:00What the paramedics saw that suggested bleeding from her stomach, the coffee-colored material, is probably just vomit that dried on her face.
35:09But the combination of symptoms like chest pain, chills and vomiting raises yet another possibility, this time supported by evidence in Donda's family tree.
35:21If I had known then what I know now, if Dr. Jen Adams had known then, I would not have operated on her.
35:32This is one of the most complicated cases I have ever seen.
35:35Donda West had several problems that, in themselves, did not cause her death, but which generated stress and a great deal of wear and tear on her body, even more so after surgery like that.
35:45By looking deeper into the autopsy report, I think I've found the clue that will explain why she died.
35:53He says there is a history of heart disease in Donda's family.
35:57Her sister had died two years earlier of a heart attack and her brother had high blood pressure.
36:03With these signs, the risk is higher that she also had heart disease and was susceptible to a heart attack.
36:10But that didn't stop Donda from having plastic surgery.
36:16In June 2007, she contacted renowned plastic surgeon Dr. André Abulian to have him operate on her.
36:24He refused unless she performed more tests to ensure her heart could handle the procedure.
36:31But she didn't do the tests and preferred to look for another plastic surgeon, Dr. Jen Adams.
36:36I think that when someone decides to do something that they think is the best way to solve a problem,
36:44and becomes dedicated to this idea, he ends up preferring not to listen to anything that indicates otherwise.
36:50The autopsy also shows that Donda had undergone an examination because of pain in her left arm and the left side of her chest,
36:57at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2007, less than six weeks before surgery with Dr. Adams.
37:03Pain on the left side of the body may indicate angina, a sign of serious heart disease.
37:09And Donda didn't mention this to her surgeon, Dr. Adams.
37:13And that is a serious omission.
37:16By hiding this information from the doctor, she ended up putting her own life at risk.
37:21Never lie to your doctor.
37:24Try to be clear.
37:25I know what plastic surgery is.
37:28Every woman wants to have plastic surgery.
37:30Every woman wants to be beautiful.
37:32But your health is more important than anything.
37:36Now, Dr. Hunter has the evidence he needs to solve the mystery of Donda West's death.
37:43First, Donda should never have left the hospital right after such a major surgery.
37:52She needed to be monitored and have her condition assessed to ensure there were no complications.
37:59And if a complication arose, she would have all the help she needed to help her right there.
38:04Secondly, Steven Scoggins promised he would be her nurse, but that wasn't the case.
38:12And she was left in the care of two friends who had no experience whatsoever in that regard.
38:20She talked to Scoggins and he agreed to take care of her.
38:24He went there to do that.
38:27And for me, he cheated on her.
38:29Left alone with her friends, in her last minutes, Donda experienced chest pains, sweating, shortness of breath and nausea.
38:39These are also clues as to what killed her.
38:44All the symptoms Donda showed indicate a heart attack.
38:47And deep inside the autopsy report is evidence of serious heart disease.
38:52She had a 50 to 70 percent narrowing in one of her coronary arteries.
38:5780% narrowing in a coronary artery is critical and the person can die suddenly and quickly.
39:05Donda was a little below that limit, but with the great stress her body suffered,
39:10with the pain resulting from the surgery, the blood loss, as well as the pneumonia that was developing,
39:16It is my opinion that she died of a massive heart attack.
39:19Wake up!
39:20She is not breathing.
39:22Dr. Adams' surgery was successful.
39:26In my opinion, it was Donda's hidden health problems,
39:29added to the stress of the surgery that caused her death.
39:34Dr. Adams took the blame for something he didn't even know about.
39:41After walking out of an interview with Larry King, Dr. Jen Adams came back to defend herself.
39:47Many things that were dictated in the presence are certainly not accurate.
39:51How badly has your practice been affected by this publicity?
39:55Horrifically.
39:56The coroner confirmed that Dr. Adams was not responsible for Donda's death.
40:02Since 2009, a new law in California, the Donda West Act,
40:06requires a patient to undergo medical examinations up to 30 days before undergoing plastic surgery.
40:12A complaint was filed against Stephen Scoggins with the Nursing Board,
40:17but after investigation it was rejected.
40:22After his mother's death, Kenny broke off his engagement to Alexis Pfeiffer.
40:29Donda West's case should serve as a warning to anyone considering similar surgery.
40:35Every plastic surgery comes with a risk attached.
40:39And that risk could cost you your life.
40:42How I wish Donda West would be remembered,
40:48I would like people to remember her as a woman full of life.
40:52Love, lots of love, words and books and knowledge.
40:58Someone who took advantage of every bit of the life she was given.
41:04And I think I would like her to be remembered as someone who had a vision for her son that manifested itself in an incredible way.
41:17Clearly, Donda's legacy is Kenny.
41:24And that's enough.
41:29Kenny rarely talks about his loss in public.
41:33But in a radio interview, he reflected on the consequences of his fame.
