00:00I think we all had a different idea of being parents before we were parents.

00:06My wife had a different idea about me as a parent when Dean was born.

00:10I had a different idea of the dynamic in my household before I was a parent.

00:16I really thought Dallas would be the disciplinary, and he's not. It's me.

00:20See, knowing you, I don't think that's surprising, but it's interesting what you thought.

00:25Yeah, I don't know. I just always thought I'd be the fun parent.

00:27Because my dad was the disciplinary in my household growing up, so I just assumed that that would be the roles that we took.

00:35Right.

00:35I was so wrong.

00:37But I found an article, and there's a lot of tweets in this article that I think are really good,

00:45because people are sharing their parent fantasies that they gave up after having kids.

00:50Okay.

00:50Like going on vacation with your children will be fun.

00:57It'll be a family event.

00:59No.

01:00If you have ever been on vacation with your children, you know it is not a vacation for mom and dad.

01:06Wrong.

01:07Right.

01:08How about this one?

01:09We'll just let them cry it out.

01:11They'll be fine.

01:12Three minutes later and a lot of vomiting, and you're like, we're never doing this again.

01:17The parent or the child?

01:18Yeah, right.

01:19My children have cried so hard that they vomited.

01:25No, you are supposed to let them cry it out.

01:27I mean, it depends on your parenting style.

01:51I won't be vulnerable to tantrums or whiny children.

02:02The big one that I got was when Dean was born, and we would tell people we have to leave.

02:08We have to go put him to bed.

02:09Like, he's on a sleep schedule.

02:10He's on an eating schedule.

02:12And somebody told me that the kid lives your schedule.

02:14You don't live the kid's schedule.

02:15Both of those things are also on this list.

02:17And I was like, ha ha, that's cute.

02:19No, you live the kid's schedule if you want to have any, you know, life at all.

02:25Or else your kid's going to be miserable and crying the whole time.

02:28And then, finally, the last one of the parenting fantasies that people gave up when they had

02:33kids was, oh, we're going to be a no-screen-time household.

02:37Yeah, that's cute.

02:38Now everybody hands over the phone or the iPad.

02:41Yeah.

02:41I would go to restaurants before we had kids, and I'd be like, oh, that's so annoying that

02:45the kid's sitting there looking at that.

02:46Like, you can't engage the child in conversation.

02:48And, bro, they have the screens as soon as they get in there.

02:52We don't go out to eat because our kids can't handle it.

02:55My nieces.

02:57Well, hold on.

02:59Let's be fair.

03:00You know, my niece and my sister does a really good job monitoring how much screen time usage

03:05they get.

03:06How about this?

03:07She gives them deactivated dead phones.

03:12And they're good with that.

03:13But they can play games and stuff.

03:16Like, they're dead.

03:16Did they just want to hold it?

03:18They just want to hold it and look cool.

03:20I'm not kidding.

03:21I was noticed over the weekend was my niece's birthday party, and I'm like, does she have

03:25a cell phone in her back pocket?

03:28She's six years old.

03:29You know, and I'm like, she shouldn't have this.

03:30She just wants to look.

03:31She just wants to look.

03:32And so, like, my sister gives them, like, a dead phone, and they're good.

03:37That's amazing.

03:38Because my kids would never buy that.

03:39My daughter, who's going to be four in August, knows the password to get onto the iPad now.

03:45I used to have to do it for her.

03:47And then she said, Dad, can I do a little ABC mouse, a little game?

03:50And I go, yeah, you can do it.

03:51Let me get it.

03:51She goes, I got it.

03:53Now, granted, it's all ones, but still, she didn't know that.
