Low-wage earners: Where is it least profitable to work in Europe?
Data shows young women, with low education and fixed-term contracts are the most likely to be low-wage earners.

Who are Europe's low-wage earners and how do they make a living?

Low-wage workers earn around two-thirds or less of the median hourly pay in their respective countries.

They represent nearly 15% of the EU's workforce, 18% among women and 12.5% among men.

A quarter of them are under 30 years old.

The highest proportions of low-wage earners are found in Bulgaria, nearly 27%, followed by Romania, at almost 24%, Latvia and Greece.

While Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Italy and Slovenia are at the other end of the spectrum.

Most low-wage earners, 35%, work in hospitality and food services, while 32% are in administration and support.

The percentage is way higher among people with fixed-term contracts, rather than permanent ones, 27.2% versus 12.6%.
