Who works the longest hours in Europe?

Over 7% of workers in the EU put in long hours last year.

Working long hours means doing 49 hours a week or more according to Eurostat.

Self-employed are far more likely to work long hours compared to employees.

In the EU, Greece has the highest share of people working at least 49 hours a week followed by Cyprus and France.

Turkey, however, has the highest share of all countries analysed, 27.2% followed by Iceland.

Turkey also has the longest average working week at 44.2 hours followed by Serbia.

The average for the EU is 36.1 hours.

On the other hand, the shortest working weeks are in the Netherlands, 32.2 hours, Austria, 33.6 hours and Germany, 34 hours.

The jobs with the longest weeks are predominantly manual, agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining and quarrying and construction.
