EU top jobs have been decided, what’s next?

With European leaders agreeing on the three names to fill the EU's top jobs, the wheels have been set in motion for the next five years in the European Union.  What comes next?

00:00They have been chosen to lead the European Union.

00:05A socialist man from the south, Antonio Costa, a centre-right woman from the west, Ursula

00:11von der Leyen, and a liberal from the east, Kaya Callas.

00:16They have support from European leaders.

00:19But von der Leyen, the incumbent presidential nominee of the executive body, needs to be

00:24confirmed by a European Parliament vote.

00:27She recognises that she cannot rely solely on the moderate three-party platform to secure

00:32the win.

00:33I will be reaching out, for example, also to MEPs from other groups than the platform.

00:41And for me it is a matter of convincing a, if possible, broad majority for a strong Europe.

00:51So this is what I'm going to be working for the next, what is it, three weeks, intensively,

00:56and then we'll see.

00:58Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Callas was appointed to be High Representative for External Policy

01:04and Security.

01:05She is well known for her hard stance against Russia and will also need European parliamentary

01:10support.

01:12This is enormous responsibility in this time of geopolitical tensions.

01:20There's war in Europe, but there's also growing instability globally that also are the main

01:27challenges for the European foreign policy.

01:31Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa will assume the mandate of President

01:36of the European Council on December 1st.

01:40He promised to promote unity among the 27 member states and to implement the strategic

01:46agenda.
