Are women overtaking men in cultural employment in the EU?

The year 2024 marks the lowest gender gap in cultural employment in the last decade. However, men still earned more than women in 26 member states.

00:00Are women overtaking men in cultural employment in the EU?
00:08Between 2015 and 2024, the EU gender gap in cultural employment dropped from 6.4 percentage points to 0.8 percentage points in 2024.
00:19This marks the lowest gender gap in cultural employment in the last decade.
00:24In 2024, the share of women in cultural employment exceeded that of men in 16 EU countries, especially in Latvia and Estonia.
00:33By contrast, in 11 EU countries, the share of cultural employment was higher for men, with the highest shares being recorded in Spain and Italy.
00:42Greece, Romania and Austria saw almost no gender gap in cultural employment.
00:46Although the gender gap in cultural employment has narrowed significantly, this balance is still not reflected in earnings.
00:52In 2022, men's gross hourly earnings in cultural employment were, on average, 13.5% above those of women in the EU.
01:03The most unbalanced sector was the printing and reproduction of recorded media, with 25.9% of women being on low wages compared with 12.4% of men.
01:14This category was followed by motion picture, video and television program production, sound recording and music publishing activities.
01:22Here, 23% of women are on low wages, while this figure was 15.1% for men.
