Riff TV presents Meltdown's Meltdown.
00:07
Well, the powers that be let me take Meltdown's Meltdown out on the street.
00:11
Here we are at DTE Energy Music Theater, where they're about to rename the entranceway to DTE 33 Bob Seger Drive.
00:20
Good morning. Good morning, and thank you all for taking the time to come out.
00:24
And thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for being here.
00:26
You know, I don't want to sound like the get-off-my-lawn guy, but 20 years ago, 30 years ago, it was a magical time,
00:33
playing the music of Bob Seger with the voices that were really there for all of us when we were kids.
00:38
And so it's great to see those faces behind the voices again.
00:42
So anyway, it's a special day today. We're here to honor Bob, but it's really an honor for us.
00:49
For any of us that grew up in the 60s and 70s here in Detroit, and I'm one of those,
00:53
there was no bigger star, there was no bigger God than Bob Seger in those days.
00:59
And whether you're watching Robin Seymour, you're watching Club 1270, or every sock hop,
01:05
or the dances at U of D, or whatever it might have been, Bob was everywhere.
01:09
And what was magical about him was he was ours. He was ours.
01:13
And you're rooted for his success, and you were hoping that he would break locally,
01:17
and you were hoping he'd break nationally and internationally.
01:19
And when he did, he was still ours. He was ours, going away, doing great things, and always coming back.
01:25
So the fact that he was a Detroiter, and if you're a Detroiter, you know how we feel about our own.
01:31
I mean, they are special, special people.
01:33
And Bob has never lost his roots, and Bob's never lost his love for the city and the people that are here.
01:38
And it's been an amazing two-way street.
01:42
And, you know, 33 sellouts in two weeks when we finish this run of six shows, 33 sellouts.
01:48
This place opened in 1972, and in July of 72, Bob came out and played his first show.
01:55
And that began a great streak.
01:56
In 77, he sold out eight in a row.
01:58
That was a record for this venue that stood for 38 years, and Bob probably could have broken that
02:03
whenever he sort of had the desire to just plant himself for a long, long time.
02:09
But he has been amazing.
02:12
He's been amazing for this venue.
02:14
And so we're going to honor him today with the name of the street or the mailing address for this facility.
02:22
And I can't imagine anybody that deserves it more.
02:25
Nobody has brought us better memories.
02:27
And if you ever want a magical night, come here and just watch people who have sat in traffic for, you know, 30 minutes, an hour, whatever.
02:34
Watch them walk through the door for a Bob Seger show.
02:38
Watch the smiles on their face.
02:40
See how they are excited.
02:41
I mean, they can't wait for the show.
02:43
The pre-show is as much fun as the show.
02:46
But Bob always delivered for us.
02:48
He always gave you a great show.
02:49
And everybody has Bob Seger stories.
02:52
Everybody has Bob Seger stories with their girlfriend or their boyfriend or their wife.
02:55
And his shows transport you back to a memory that you almost forgot that you had.
03:01
Every time you hear something, it's connected to a memory.
03:04
And that's what makes these shows so special.
03:06
And that's what makes Bob so special.
03:08
So we're delighted to have you here.
03:11
Delighted to see you play.
03:12
Delighted to hear you play one more time.
03:14
And I know we're going to have six amazing nights.
03:17
So I'd like to welcome Arne Tellem, who's the vice president of Palace Sports and Entertainment,
03:21
to come up and make the presentation.
03:26
Thank you, Tom.
03:27
And again, I'm going to echo what Tom said.
03:28
Thank you all for coming today.
03:31
It's really an exciting day for all of us, for our organization, for 313 Presents.
03:35
We're honoring a rock and roll legend and a hall of famer who has inspired us and brought
03:41
joy not only to this region but to people all over the world and while remaining true
03:46
to the values and spirit of this region.
03:49
I have to say, Tom talked about it.
03:52
Everyone has memories.
03:53
So in 1976, I came to Ann Arbor to go to law school.
03:59
I never had stepped a foot outside of Philadelphia.
04:01
And the first night, a group of us, and in 1976, my music was like the Rolling Stones,
04:09
the Allman Brothers, and a local guy named Bruce Springsteen, who was our religious deity.
04:14
And I didn't know, I have to convince, I didn't know much about Bob Seger.
04:19
But that night, the first night of law school, a group of us gathered in the law dorms for
04:23
pizza and beer.
04:24
And my roommate, who was from Ann Arbor, said, you've got to listen to this album and put
04:30
on Live Bullet.
04:31
And so much of my law school memories, and Night Moves came out a few months later.
04:38
And so much of my law school memories are not my classes or anything academic, but it's
04:43
pizza and beer and listening to Bob Seger.
04:46
And it really was a backdrop for my years here.
04:50
And the music has stayed with me and resonated with me ever since.
04:54
And for me, it's really an honor to be here to share this moment with you, Bob.
04:59
Two years ago, in 2017, we were honored to have Bob close the palace as the last show.
05:08
And it was really a poignant, memorable, filled night.
05:11
And I think, like Tom said, everyone who left there, I think, took away a special feeling
05:16
that it was appropriate that Bob closed and was the last show at the palace.
05:21
And we're thrilled to have you here at DTE for six sellout shows this summer.
05:26
And as Tom alluded to, in 1972, you performed here.
05:30
And what we have is a contract backstage.
05:32
So you will do your 50th anniversary of that show three years from now.
05:37
No pressure, but we do have a contract here.
05:40
Same rate.
05:41
Same rate.
05:44
Yeah.
05:48
But Bob, you've had an amazing career.
05:51
But what we admire most is that throughout the years, you are still the same.
05:57
Rock and roll never forgets.
06:00
And we will never forget you.
06:02
And it's my honor to join representing Tom Goris.
06:10
I'm representing 313 with Tom Wilson to join Independence Township
06:16
and officially renaming the address from 7774 Sachabar Road to 33 Bob Seeger Drive.
06:25
So, Bob, on behalf of Tom Goris and Tom Wilson, please join me on stage
06:30
to unveil the new address for DTE Energy Theater from this day forward.
06:35
33 Bob Seeger Drive, Clarkston, Michigan.
06:38
Thanks, buddy.
06:40
Oh, there it is.
06:47
Well, thanks, everybody, for coming.
06:50
Yeah, I've got to thank so many people.
06:53
Of course, number one, the fans.
06:55
They're always number one.
06:56
But Palace Sports and Entertainment, Tom Goris and Arn Tellem.
07:00
313% presents Tom Wilson and his team.
07:06
Live Nation, Rick Franks, Dave Clark, Jim O'Brien, all our friends at radio, Independence Township, and it's overwhelming.
07:16
I'm really happy about this, great honor, and thank you so much.
07:20
Yeah.
07:21
All right.
07:22
There you have it.
07:27
Some of the dignitaries still here kind of milling about.
07:29
