Felger and Mazz are back with another edition of '5 Questions That Have Nothing to do With Sports'. This week Jim Murray asked questions, but with a beach theme to them.
Transcript
00:00Maz must have been in the can, coming in hot.
00:02No, he was just chatting to people.
00:03Oh, all right.
00:04A little chinwag.
00:05That's what he does.
00:06He chats.
00:06Yep.
00:07Hold on.
00:08Dennis, turn him up.
00:09Got an old friend here.
00:10Oh, very good.
00:12And as if you notice, that's the old intro, which means this segment is once again for sale.
00:17So we have some sponsorship availability with the five questions.
00:21It's a big segment.
00:21Whenever we put it at the end of the show and the simulcast cuts out and people don't get it, we get hate mail.
00:27So it's a popular in-demand segment.
00:30It is available for sponsorship just in case you won.
00:33It's huge.
00:33The people love it.
00:34And I was told to keep this somewhat beach theme.
00:36So question number one, where did your family take you on summer vacations when you were a kid?
00:43And what do you think of that place now that you're older?
00:45So this is like one of the things we talk about a lot.
00:48It's like because Nantucket is nice.
00:50I mean, I'm so lucky, blessed to have a little place to be able to come here.
00:55It's just so nice.
00:57And as a kid, we would go to a place called Lake Geneva, which is in Wisconsin, and all my father could afford was the Budgetel.
01:08So we'd sit at the Budgetel on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin and then sneak down to this nicer resort.
01:16It was called the Pioneer.
01:17I can't remember what it was called.
01:17But we'd walk down to this resort, sneak in, and hang out at this nicer resort.
01:23Beautiful.
01:24And Dan and I, my brother and I, when we were little kids, we'd be running around saying,
01:28when are we going back to the Budgetel?
01:30When are we going back to the Budgetel?
01:32And my parents would say, no, they said to us, that's pronounced boujate.
01:38We're called the bouj.
01:39So we were that family that would get in the station wagon and drive from Milwaukee to Florida with grandma in the backseat.
01:45You know, so it's like, how lucky are we that this is now our life?
01:49So that just kind of answers your question.
01:52Would we go back there now?
01:53No, no, no, sir.
01:54So ours was the Cape, mostly.
01:56In fact, not a terribly dissimilar story.
01:59We used to, my parents found a motel in Dennisport right on the beach or across the street from the beach that we used to stay in every summer.
02:06And we would go down there.
02:08And then eventually, as we got older, again, my parents were immigrants.
02:13My father was a factory worker for a long period of time.
02:15But they built their own place on the Cape, which they still have.
02:19And we started to go there after the fact.
02:22So would I go back?
02:24Do you like it?
02:25Would you go back?
02:26I'd go back to the house.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Yeah.
02:28You know, at the time, I didn't think anything of it.
02:33And it was totally fine.
02:35It was totally nice or nice enough for us at that time.
02:38But would I go there with my family now?
02:40I would say probably not.
02:41Again, you know, fortunately, life has evolved.
02:46And we'd spend more time.
02:47I think we would just go to my family house.
02:50It was North Conway, New Hampshire for me in the house my dad eventually retired in.
02:54It was my grandparents' house.
02:55And it was always hot, a million pine needles, people being pissed.
02:59And then all there was to do was to go to the outlets.
03:01Like, I still don't really love North Conway.
03:04I didn't like it as a kid.
03:05They've built it up.
03:05It's now a more vacation spot.
03:07It's great in the wintertime.
03:08But in the summer, not enough water.
03:10Hot.
03:11The air doesn't move because you're in Mount Washington Valley.
03:14Oh, I hate it.
03:15Two, one of the longstanding vacation destinations is Las Vegas.
03:19And according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, visits to Vegas down 11.3% in June of this year compared to last year.
03:28Who's to blame for this in your opinion?
03:30It's fascinating.
03:30Um, inflation, the cost of everything, maybe.
03:35I mean, I've read up on some of this, uh, foreign travel is way down.
03:39So is that the dollar?
03:42Is that inflation?
03:43Is that the cost?
03:44Is that Trump kind of being, you know, uh, Trump, just the Trump effect?
03:51Um, I don't know, but I was there last spring and you notice it.
03:55Like it is, it is less.
03:56I'm going to defer to cost.
03:58I just think everything costs too much.
04:01And so that includes Vegas.
04:03I think, uh, the world's losing its edge a little bit.
04:06If you ask me.
04:06Nice man.
04:07No, like I do.
04:08A lot of people are blaming the youth, but like young people are drinking as much.
04:11They don't party as much.
04:12I did.
04:13They just don't live as dirty a life.
04:15Interesting.
04:16And I say dirty, like, but you know what I mean?
04:18Like the vices.
04:19Yeah.
04:20I don't think they, they're into the vices as much.
04:23And I, you know, I almost was going to say Murray, uh, also gambling has been legalized
04:29in a lot of places.
04:30And so maybe you don't feel the urge to go.
04:33I think that's part of it.
04:33Like that started 25 years ago.
04:36Yeah.
04:36So to me, it's, I think it's private equity.
04:38I don't think it's politics.
04:39I don't think it's the pandemic.
04:40Cause people want to blame that.
04:41I don't think it's young people.
04:42I think it's private equity.
04:43Everything's an upcharge.
04:44Now it's like the cost.
04:45It's an expensive mall where everything's a grift.
04:48Like it drinks are $30.
04:50When we were there for the Superbowl, I was there twice in like a three month span.
04:53I couldn't believe the cost of everything.
04:55The cost.
04:55Everything's an upcharge in Vegas now.
04:57So I think that's the private equity effect.
04:58I do.
04:59Yeah.
04:59Cause they've like gotten rid of comps for the regular guy.
05:01Like regular Joe's don't, don't get the comps anymore.
05:03Buffets are gone.
05:04Like regular people like that.
05:05Like all that crap's gone.
05:07Everything's a cost now.
05:08It's costs.
05:09Yeah.
05:09So three, uh, speaking of costs tax-free weekend in Massachusetts, are you planning on making a big
05:13purchase or have you taken advantage of it in the past?
05:17If you're not doing it this weekend, zero points.
05:19I didn't know it was.
05:20I've never known what it is.
05:22I guess I don't totally get it, but I, if I just thought about it for half a second,
05:26it would make sense.
05:27It's your one weekend to stick it to the man.
05:29I guess I don't do it.
05:30No, never even thought of it.
05:32Yeah.
05:32I don't think I have either.
05:33There might've been one year where it coincided with like we were buying some furniture,
05:37but I, but it was not a deliberate attempt.
05:41And you know, they said to us, Oh, it's tax-free weekend.
05:43You'll get, you know, you'll save on the, cause at the end of the day, unless you're
05:46buying something that is monstrous, you know, you'll gain some.
05:51I mean, you'll, you'll, I'm not telling you it's totally insignificant, but it's not something
05:55that we typically have planned around.
05:57Yeah.
05:58Oh, I've bought all kinds of crap in the past.
05:59Nothing planned this year, but it's the chance to be like, ah, take that government parasites.
06:03Time to buy a TV.
06:04Uh, four rank these summertime foods, hot lobster roll with butter, cold lobster roll with mayo,
06:11fried clams with the bellies, beach pizza, steamers, lobster roll butter, lobster roll
06:19mayo, steamers, clams with belly, beach pizza.
06:25Yeah.
06:26That's kind of a more regional thing.
06:27I didn't know if you'd know it.
06:28It's more Salisbury Hampton Christie's Tripoli.
06:30It's a thin slice.
06:31You buy it by the slice or a couple of slices, sweet sauce.
06:34They'll throw a slab of provolone on it too.
06:36It's a, it's a delicacy.
06:37I love it.
06:38Sounds great.
06:39But I, since I'm not familiar with it, it's, it goes fifth.
06:42Yeah.
06:42That's fifth for me too.
06:44Uh, steamers.
06:44Number one, absolutely love steamers, uh, lobster roll, butter, second lobster roll, mayo, third.
06:51Uh, what was the other one?
06:52Oh, bellies, fried clams with bellies, fourth, the pizza, fifth, uh, cold lobster roll for
06:56me.
06:57Number one, uh, no celery though.
06:58Get celery out of here.
06:59Ruins it.
07:00Fried clams with the bellies, steamers.
07:01I can eat them until I feel shame.
07:03Me too.
07:03Hot lobster roll and beach pizza, even though I love it, but I want, I want the seafood.
07:06Do you order a lobster roll without celery?
07:09Yes.
07:10You high maintenance.
07:11Celery ruins everything.
07:12Busy, natural.
07:13Oh, I hate that crunch.
07:14It's a, it overpowers the taste.
07:16So you're going to ask the guys in back to pick out the celery?
07:18No, if it's already pre-
07:19How high maintenance are you?
07:20If it's, if it's, Gary.
07:22It's so soft.
07:23If it's pre-made.
07:24Just eat the celery and don't think twice about it.
07:25And he shows up wearing his winter coat.
07:27My God.
07:27If it's pre-made, I'll pick it out.
07:29But if I can ask and say, hey, can you make me a fresh one?
07:32Just mayo, please?
07:33I'm going to ask.
07:35Finally, what's your personal feeling?
07:36It's so high maintenance.
07:37What's your personal feeling on when summer ends?
07:39Labor Day, when training camp starts, July 5th, et cetera.
07:42When do you think summer ends?
07:43Keeps moving up.
07:44It's now July 3rd.
07:46You say July 5th.
07:48I start thinking about it on the 3rd, which when, as soon as you start thinking about it,
07:51it's over.
07:52July 3rd.
07:53Labor Day.
07:54Labor Day.
07:55Because once you get past that, I sort of mentally.
07:57Don't stop it.
07:58You don't.
07:59Don't you feel right this second, like, fall's coming, school for your kid is coming?
08:04Yeah.
08:05Yeah.
08:05That means summer's over, bro.
08:06No, it's not over yet.
08:07That means it's over.
08:08No, Labor Day, I like, I actually have, like, this little shift.
08:11Like, all of a sudden, it's okay.
08:12There's a sadness that sets in.
08:13Yeah.
08:14Yeah.
08:15It's, that's in, now it's in full force.
08:18July 4th is when it first, the first inkling of it.
08:20Yeah, we get.
08:21I would say in most years.
08:23This year might be different.
08:24Yeah.
08:25So, I'm with you.
08:26It's, it's.
08:26Summer Mads is extending into October.
08:28It's a specific time.
08:29Oh, is it really?
08:30Oh, yeah.
08:31It's a specific time of Labor Day weekend.
08:33That marquee football, college football game around 4 o'clock on that Saturday.
08:37Oh, it's over.
08:37That's where it feels like.
08:39It's so over.
08:39It's so over.
08:40And there's the crispness in the air, and it's just done.
08:43That's when I think it happens.
08:44All right.
08:44So, it concludes the five questions.
