European telescope studying the dark universe unveils new images of distant galaxies

00:00This is the universe as seen through the lens of the Euclid telescope.

00:0526 million galaxies captured so far, 35 terabytes of images which have been put together to

00:11form a map of the cosmos.

00:15And this is just the beginning.

00:17It's only one week's work of mapping the sky.

00:20The mission, carried out by the European Space Agency, is due to last six years, over which

00:26researchers hope to map one third of the extragalactic sky with such detail.

00:32Some of these galaxies are over 10 billion light years away from us, and by scanning

00:37them multiple times, the telescope will capture them at different stages of their evolution.

00:42And this, scientists hope, will help understand how structures have formed and changed over

00:48billions of years.

00:49It's impossible to visualise all the galaxies, there will be billions of galaxies.

00:54So in many areas of astronomy, AI will be used more and more to classify and find, also

01:02to find a new object.

01:04Euclid is just starting this survey, it will keep us busy for many more years.

01:11And we are all very excited and the scientific community by the great potential.

01:17Euclid's nickname is the Dark Universe Detective.

01:20Its ultimate purpose is to shed some light on dark matter, which is believed to be what

01:24holds galaxies together, as well as on dark energy.

01:28Dark energy pulls galaxies apart by making the universe expand faster and faster over

01:34time.
