00:00The Godolphin team had an unforgettable derby weekend when they had three grade one winners
00:06at Churchill Downs, including their first ever victory in the Kentucky Oaks.
00:10The dams of each of these talented performers each had their own unique path to the Godolphin
00:15broodmare band, so we sat down with Michael Banahan to learn more.
00:20To have a domestic triple grade one weekend, I don't think we've had that before.
00:25We knew we had a lot of nice horses ready to showcase themselves on derby weekend, but
00:31it just went, it couldn't have gone any more perfect than it did.
00:36But our expectations were pretty high as well, but we know the way the game goes.
00:40You know we've been fortunate enough that we got the opportunity and given the green
00:44light to buy a couple of mares at the Fasig Tipton November sale.
00:49She was a high profile mare, pre-seed dancer.
00:52She was grade one winning two year old, tappet mare, a half to a really good runner, Lear's Princess.
01:00So our expectations were high, obviously with a very valuable mare, an expensive mare buying
01:07like that, and you never know which way they're going to work out, but by the quality of her
01:11stock on the ground, we were pretty excited about what we saw.
01:15Our pre-mischievous was our second foal, and then we have a really nice street sense on
01:21the ground as well, and she's had nothing but fillies so far, so hopefully maybe we
01:25get a colt next year and get a foal to a full brother to pre-mischievous would be pretty nice.
01:31So we bought a dance card as a two year old down in Florida, and at that time we did buy
01:37a few two year olds, not many, but we bought a few.
01:40She was a good race mare, Kier McLaughlin trained her, and she hit at the highest level
01:45in the gazelle when the gazelle was a grade one.
01:48She came up with some really nice foals in her first few foals on the ground, but Cody's
01:54wish was by far her best looking foal that she produced at that stage.
02:01It's what dreams are made of, and when we do obviously go out and try and buy these
02:06horses we have expectations of them as a race horse, and as a filly to come back into
02:12the broodmare band.
02:14Dance card has a filly by a gun runner this year, who is a nice type of foal coming in
02:20behind her.
02:21She's a really nice street sense yearling that we're high on as well.
02:25We'll hopefully have some more really nice prodigy on the racetrack down the road.
02:31Innovative Ideas is the dam of Maddarea, and she's a lovely young mare, and to me
02:37it is the family that keeps on giving to us.
02:41We bought the Grand Dam Caress years ago from John Williams.
02:46With Maddarea she's a second foal out of Innovative Idea.
02:51Innovative Idea was a really nice race mare for us as well, own hearty trainer, and won
02:57the groupie doll at Helles Park.
03:00The dam that we raced to a graded level, with a family that we have had for quite a while,
03:08with multiple stakes winners in there.
03:10We really like to cultivate that and try and get the best race horses we can out of the
03:16family as well.
03:17But to get it from a home bred as well is extra special.
03:21Innovative Idea has a foal by Curlin this year, and is being bred back again.
03:28We have high hopes for her, she's a really nice filly as well.
03:32The thing that they all have in common, be it Innovative Idea, Pretty City Dancer, and
03:38Dance Card, they're all good race mares.
03:41I think that's a quality that we love to have in any of the brood mares we have, that they've
03:47been successful on the racetrack.
03:50We've been very fortunate that we have some beautiful land, some of the best land in,
03:55we feel, in central Kentucky, and we've had really good race horses raised on our farms.
04:02And I think the personnel that we have are second to none, they do a wonderful job.
04:07So we're very fortunate at the moment, and hopefully maybe we can turn one of those mares
04:12into a blue hen.
