An analyst said it is too soon to count out Lim Kwan Eng, despite losing the DAP chairmanship,
00:08
suggesting that the Bagan MP could stage a comeback if the party struggles in the next
00:12
general election.
00:14
James Chin of the University of Tasmania said with Kwan Eng's father Lim Kit Siang being
00:19
a dominant force in DAP for over five decades, and Kwan Eng himself having played a key role
00:25
in the party's success, it was too early to write the latter off.
00:29
Chin also said if DAP performs poorly in the next election, members may push for a return
00:35
to the old leadership, potentially restoring Kwan Eng to a prominent role.
00:40
Former DAP strongman Ronnie Liu said if the current leadership does well, it would limit
00:45
Kwan Eng's ability to outshine Loke, but if DAP struggles within Pakatan Harapan, he
00:51
could become more relevant.
00:53
He also said Kwan Eng could have a role if dissatisfaction among DAP grassroots continues
00:58
to grow, as many field party leaders are too quiet amid rampant and unchecked extremism.
01:05
Meanwhile, former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming believes Kwan Eng's election into the party's central
01:11
executive committee signals that he still holds influence within the party.
01:16
However, Ong said it was yet to be seen whether Lim would embrace the role of statesman, similar
01:22
to the role played by Lim Kitsiang when he was part of the CEC but did not hold any positions.
01:29
Natasha Bust, FMT.
