00:00
Let's get to the latest on the pitch in soccer.
00:02
We bring in Kyle Bohn, of course, from Sporting News,
00:04
talking soccer with us as he does weekly here on the show.
00:07
It's great to have Kyle back.
00:08
Back-to-back weeks, by the way,
00:09
some exciting stuff happening in soccer.
00:12
We'll get to the Champions League quarterfinals coming up,
00:15
some Futures bets potentially as well,
00:16
and the game between Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League.
00:19
We'll have a preview of that.
00:20
Hopefully we can get to all this, Kyle,
00:22
but let's get started with the Madrid Derby here.
00:25
Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid,
00:27
a crazy finish to a game yesterday
00:30
that some people watched, some people not.
00:32
I think probably we should describe the ending
00:36
as to what happened yesterday
00:37
and what it could mean for the future of soccer and replays.
00:40
Yeah, there's a lot to discuss here
00:42
because it was really a memorable finish.
00:44
It felt controversial at the time.
00:47
Looking back on it, maybe not so much,
00:49
but still a lot of debate about this.
00:51
So basically, the game went to, it was an awesome game,
00:54
two teams throwing haymakers.
00:55
It was one of those high on intensity, low on quality.
00:59
Only one goal scored in the first minute of the game,
01:02
25 seconds in.
01:03
Nobody scored after that,
01:04
but it was really back and forth, a fun watch.
01:07
It went to a penalty shootout
01:09
between two teams that hate each other's guts.
01:11
And Julian Alvarez slips as he goes to take his penalty,
01:15
still scores somehow, even though he slipped.
01:18
It was an absolutely awesome penalty.
01:20
He roofed it into the top corner.
01:22
Suddenly there's a video review
01:24
and they've disallowed the penalty
01:26
because the video kind of shows that his plant foot,
01:31
as it slips, barely contacts the ball
01:34
before he then kicks it into the goal.
01:37
And the penalty taker is not allowed to touch the ball twice
01:41
before another player does.
01:42
And the point of the rule is to keep the penalty taker
01:46
from deceiving the goalkeeper
01:47
with maybe one touch and then scoring,
01:50
or to keep it from like if the penalty taker hits the post
01:54
and the ball comes back out,
01:55
he is not allowed to then touch it again
01:57
and put it back into the net.
01:59
So that's the spirit of the rule.
02:01
In this case, it was completely unintentional,
02:03
but the goal is disallowed
02:05
and Atletico Madrid lose the shootout by one.
02:08
Highly controversial at the time
02:11
because it was impossible to see on video
02:14
whether Alvarez's foot actually did touch the ball.
02:17
It was very inconclusive.
02:18
Now, it comes out later that UEFA
02:21
and other leagues have technology
02:25
to detect touches on the ball,
02:28
whether it be a chip in the ball in other competitions
02:31
or in this one, they have 26 cameras that triangulate
02:34
and use AI technology to track touches on the ball
02:38
and body movements that's normally used
02:40
for offside situations.
02:42
But in this case, it detected two touches on the ball,
02:45
the penalty was disallowed.
02:47
Now, UEFA has come out this morning with a statement
02:49
that said, hey, we're gonna discuss
02:52
a potential rule change here,
02:53
which is really the debate that has ensued afterwards
02:57
because it felt really harsh.
02:59
This was not on the spirit of the rule
03:02
and to disallow the penalty entirely
03:04
and count it as a miss felt harsh for the situation.
03:08
UEFA has said we're gonna review
03:10
for instances of unintentional double touches.
03:13
You might consider they could rule
03:15
that the penalty would be retaken
03:18
rather than count it as a miss.
03:20
So that's sort of been the fallout.
03:22
It was very memorable, very controversial
03:24
and a really good game and something we'll remember
03:26
for a long time, maybe even because it could end up
03:29
in a rule change.
03:30
Yeah, and from sports veterans,
03:32
I cannot even imagine the end of that one
03:35
affecting people.
03:36
All right, quickly, let's go to the Champions League.
03:38
We've got the quarterfinals.
03:39
We'll talk some futures here.
03:41
We got a lot to cover here, Kyle,
03:43
so I don't know that we'll have time for everything,
03:44
but let's start off with Arsenal, Real Madrid
03:46
and then PSG, Aston Villa, let's start there.
03:49
Yeah, there's a lot of good games here
03:51
as they usually are when you get to this stage
03:54
of the competition.
03:55
Arsenal, Real Madrid will be really, really fun.
03:57
You've got two flawed teams here.
03:59
Real Madrid do not look like they're at their best.
04:01
They were really troubled by Atletico Madrid
04:04
a number of times.
04:05
They really were locked down.
04:06
Kylian Mbappe was not very good in both legs,
04:11
but Arsenal have a ton of injuries in the attack.
04:14
They are currently playing a midfielder at striker
04:17
and have for a couple of weeks now
04:19
because they have no natural striker
04:21
and very few options up front.
04:23
So this will be a really intriguing matchup
04:25
between two teams that are very good,
04:27
but also flawed at this stage of the season.
04:30
PSG, Aston Villa, PSG are maybe the second best team
04:34
in this competition, which is not something we expected
04:37
to say, you know, maybe around Christmas time.
04:40
They didn't look at their best,
04:42
but they have really turned a corner
04:44
and have come through.
04:45
Ousmane Dembele is a low-key Ballon d'Or candidate now.
04:50
So that's gonna be, I think PSG take that pretty easily.
04:55
It's really Arsenal, Real Madrid,
04:57
the one that I'm looking at.
04:58
And then also, you know, you can look at Bayern Munich
05:02
enter as one, two on the other side of the bracket
05:06
is one that I think would be really intriguing.
05:08
Bayern Munich have been great this season.
05:10
They're usually great in the attack.
05:11
They pummel teams, enter very well-disciplined at the back.
05:16
So you've really got a clash of strengths
05:19
there in that matchup.
05:20
All right, let's get to the Premier League
05:22
and start off Sunday morning, 9.30 a.m. Eastern.
05:24
Let's take a look at the odds here.
05:26
We've got Arsenal taking on Chelsea
05:28
with Arsenal as the home favorite, minus 125.
05:31
Fairly big advantage here in terms of favorites there.
05:34
If you take Chelsea, you get plus 360.
05:37
My guess is Arsenal should win, but will they, Kyle?
05:42
Yeah, this is a tough one because, you know,
05:44
I mentioned Arsenal very, very thin in the attack.
05:47
Chelsea are the same way.
05:49
They lost Nico Jackson to injury,
05:51
and nobody's really been able to replace him.
05:52
Christopher Nkunku has been very poor in the attack,
05:55
and Enzo Mareschia has tried so many things
05:59
to get this team going.
06:00
He's played a ton of players out of position.
06:02
He's just tinkering all over the place.
06:03
I'm liking the under here.
06:05
The market kind of dumped the value
06:08
that I thought might show up on the under
06:10
because these are two teams
06:11
known for scoring goals normally,
06:13
but the market has sort of adjusted.
06:15
I still like the under in this one.
06:16
You can get it at about minus 120.
06:20
I do like the value on Chelsea here.
06:23
That's a very big disparity,
06:25
and Arsenal have not been great over the past few months.
06:28
They've just been very inconsistent,
06:30
and I could see them dropping points here.
06:32
Chelsea need this game more than Arsenal do.
06:35
All right, fair enough.
06:37
Final one, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona.
06:39
Sunday afternoon, 4 p.m. Eastern.
06:42
Barcelona, a favorite here, Kyle.
06:44
We got about a minute to go.
06:45
Who do you like?
06:45
Yeah, Barcelona's the best team in the world right now,
06:48
but you can never count Atletico Madrid out,
06:50
especially at home, just like we saw against Real Madrid.
06:53
They probably deserve to come out with that one with a win,
06:57
and so you could really see them trouble at Barcelona,
07:00
but it's hard to pick against Barcelona right now.
07:03
You could get the over three goals here.
07:06
I like the over three goals selection
07:09
just to hedge your bet a little bit.
07:10
You can get that one at about minus 120.
07:12
Atletico Madrid play to their other team,
07:15
and Barcelona score a ton of goals,
07:17
so I think that one beats over.
07:19
All right, Kyle, have a great weekend.
07:20
Thanks again for coming on.
07:21
Thanks, Craig.
